        Eigenh. Brief m. U.

St. Petersburg, 17./29.II.1828 - 4to. 5 pp. 2 Doppelblätter. Ränder gebräunt. Winzige Falzlöcher. An den französischen Aussenminister, Pierre-Louis-Auguste Ferron, comte de La Ferronais (1777- 1842).

CONSECUTIVE RUN OF LOUISIANA LAWS FROM THE FIRST SEVENTEEN SESSIONS OF THE STATE LEGISLATURE, 1812 - 1828].

New Orleans. 1812-1828. - Seventeen volumes, publication details and pagination provided in the listing below. Uniform 20th-century buckram, gilt leather labels. Small ink library stamp to titlepages, embossed blind-stamp to most titlepages, occasional ink ownership signature, some small paper repairs, minor foxing, some leaves closely trimmed, a few small marginal tears, including the bottom corner of one titlepage, some tears with minor effect to text (individually enumerated in the detailed list below), minor occasional staining, mostly marginal or in the gutters. Overall, a good set. An superb consecutive set of the first seventeen session laws issued after Louisiana achieved statehood in 1812, comprising the laws from the first session of the first "General Assembly" or legislature to the second session of the Eighth Legislature. A wealth of interesting information on the early affairs of Louisiana, at a time when the state was at the western extreme of the United States. The first volume contains much to be expected from a first legislature: a resolution giving the legislature's assent to "an enlargement of the limits of the State of Louisiana," an act regarding the salaries of various state officials, an act establishing election methods for various public offices including the U.S. House of Representatives, an act authorizing a state loan, and an act to organize a "Corps of Militia for the Service of the State of Louisiana." Understandably, there is a voluminous amount of information regarding slavery in the state throughout the laws. During the first session of the legislature alone, two of the twenty- four acts enumerated concern reimbursement from state funds for lost slaves (one to imprisonment and one killed while trying to run away). There are also acts relative to runaway slaves, private emancipation, and more. Towards the end of the run, the eighth legislature passed an act prohibiting entry of slaves into the state for purposes of sale. Other acts contained here organize the City of New Orleans into wards, with various and numerous laws on internal improvements, civil law, and criminal law. While individual volumes come to the market on occasion, nothing like this group has ever been offered at retail; it is a collection that would be impossible to assemble today on a book-by-book basis. The imprints included here are as follows: 1) ACTS PASSED AT THE FIRST SESSION OF THE FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF LOUISIANA. New Orleans: Thierry, 1812. 91pp. JUMONVILLE 226. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 25881. 2) ACTS PASSED AT THE SECOND SESSION OF THE FIRST LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF LOUISIANA.         AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED.

Date unknown, circa 1828.16 lines handwritten in ink on half a sheet of notepaper without address, unfolded size: 320 x 205 mm, 13 x 8 inches. Addressed to Miss Sarah Lachlan for whom he had written the acrostic poem Un Solitaire: " Dear Miss Lachlan, Emma has so few days to stay with me, that it would be painful to me to part with her for one whole one. But I will bring her to tea with you on Monday, and you shall let us go before 8. I enclose your brother an autograph of Jekyll, Bencher of the Temple, and the reputed wit of the Bar for the last 50 years. Your brother is too young to have heard much about him, but he has been widely known in his profession, as a capital epigrammatist etc. and was the reigning joker of his age. With Emma's kindest love to your aunt & self. Yours truly C Lamb, Saturday evening." The letter refers to Emma Isola the adopted daughter of Charles and Mary. She was an accomplished amateur artist and did a drawing to go with the poem Un Solitaire written for Miss Lachlan. With the letter is a copy of the poem on a pale yellow leaf to which is pasted a brief note seemingly in Lamb's hand: "Mr Lamb has scribbled on a vacant leaf, which may be torn out without ceremony, if his nonsense is out of place. He will in that case beg leave to try again. Miss Isola requests him to return thanks for a sight of the album, & could wish her contribution better". There are very slight textual differences in this version of the poem from the usual printed one. Finally there is a sheet of notepaper with a poem of 3 4 - line stanzas by Mary Lamb beginning: "My sweetly modest tranquil Child / So Humble duteous pensive mild.." addressed to "My Dear Sarah with my earnest prayers for every happiness to attend Her, M L". This seems also to concern Sarah Lachlan and was written for the occasion of her birthday. The letters have been folded twice, remains of a small red seal on Charles Lamb's, address panel browned on Mary's, leaf with Un Solitaire has a greetings card pasted to reverse from when it was in an album.         Execution of William Corder, For the Murder of Mary Martin in the Red.

1828 - "Young Lovers All I Pray Attend, While I Relate a Deed, The Bare Recital of the Same, Will Make Your Hearts to Bleed." [Broadside]. [Execution]. [Suffolk, England]. Execution of William Corder, For the Murder of Mary Martin in the Red Barn. [London]: Printed by J. Catnach, 2 Monmouth-Court, 7 Dials, [1828]. 15" x 20" broadside. Text in five columns separated by black rules, five large woodcut vignettes, three at top of text, two below, depicting moments in the history of the crime. All but the hanging scene have captions. Account concludes with a long verse poem. Moderate toning, horizontal and vertical fold-lines, some edgewear and a few chips and minor tears along fold-lines, otherwise fine. * "The Red Barn Murder was a notorious homicide committed in Polstead, Suffolk, England in 1827. A young woman, Maria Marten, was shot dead by her lover, William Corder. The two had arranged to meet at the Red Barn, a local landmark, before eloping to Ipswitch. Maria was never heard from again. Corder fled the scene and, although he sent Martin's family letters claiming she was in good health, her body was later discovered buried in the barn after her stepmother spoke of having dreamed about the murder. Corder was tracked down in London, where he had married and started a new life. He was brought back to Suffolk, and after a well-publicized trial, found guilty of murder. He was hanged at Bury St. Edmonds in 1828; a huge crowd witnessed Corder's execution. The story provoked numerous articles in newspapers, and songs and plays. The village where the crime had taken place had become a tourist attraction and the barn was stripped by souvenir hunters.": Wikipedia.

THE MUMMY! A TALE OF THE TWENTY-SECOND CENTURY . Second Edition.

London: Henry Colburn, 1828 - 12mo, three volumes: [i-iii] iv-viii [1] 2-309 [310: blank]; [i-ii] [1] 2- 331 [332: blank]; [i-ii] [1-2] 3-311 [312: printer's imprint], rebound in eighteenth-century style three-quarter leather and marbled boards with gold stamping and red leather spine labels. Second edition, revised. The text of second edition, also published anonymously, differs substantially from that of the 1827 first edition (see Locke, Spectrum II, p. 131). THE MUMMY is one of the three most important British science fiction novels published during the early nineteenth century, the others being Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN and THE LAST MAN, and, according to Alkon, the novel is "one of the two most noteworthy English efforts between FRANKENSTEIN and the scientific romances of H. G. Wells" (Science Fiction Before 1900, p. 38). An "exuberant Gothic romance. which. described the technological wonders of the twenty-second century; steam mowing apparatus, balloons that rise to a height of seventeen miles and mobile houses that move from place to place on railway lines. Her prophecy of the new Egypt makes her the first sibyl in the history of modern technology." - Clarke, The Pattern of Expectation: 1644-2001, pp. 55-56. "One of the children of FRANKENSTEIN, interesting in its curious medley of themes from current events, literature, and social theory. It contains snippets of almost every popular fictional form of its period and the immediate past, and also anticipates future developments. It offer utopian thought, Gothicism, anti-intellectualism, Egyptological discoveries, fantastic inventions, memories of Napoleon, Byronism, a dynastic theory of history, and much else. The sf element is strong, with many inventions and many projections of history; the supernatural element enters in the background, in the ultimate anti-intellectual theme, when the mummy reveals that it was not really revived by electricity, but by God as a warning against scientific prying." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1205. The "novel focuses primarily on the Byzantine political intrigues in an England under a female monarchial succession. In this advanced world of the future, where weather control is possible and people travel in high- speed balloons, a man named Edric journeys to Egypt -- now totally industrialized -- with a Frankensteinian plan for reanimating the mummy of Cheops. The attempt appears successful, but afterwards Edric passes out and the mummy escapes, taking Edric's balloon to England and entering into the plotting and counter-plotting there. Thereafter, the romance reads more like something out of Sir Walter Scott. In the final scene [in] the Cheops' tomb, the mummy, who has for the most part been presented as a diabolic figure, reveals to Edric that supernatural rather than natural forces caused him to come to life again temporarily to 'assist the good and punish the malevolent' as penitence for his misdeeds as pharaoh." - Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 1-24. "Webb's novel, despite the originality of a future setting which deserves very high praise, remains a comic fable without either tragic force, mythic power, or the sustained cognitive and emotional interest that may be achieved by scientifically plausible marvels of the kind Felix Bodin was soon to associate with futuristic fiction. Webb's achievement nevertheless commands respect and deserves far more recognition than it has received precisely because THE MUMMY does come remarkable close to meeting Bodin's standards. It best illustrates the incomplete evolution of futuristic fiction up to the 1830s. It also best illustrates how far an effort to sustain metafictional self- consciousness in a tale shaped by the dictates of fantasy rather than realism could serve as encouragement for creating a futuristic fiction. Writing neither as a prophet nor a utopian but in an explicit effort to invent a new kind of hero in a new kind of fiction, Jane Webb almost achieved the ideal novel of the future as Bodin was to [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SOME ACCOUNT OF SOME OF THE BLOODY DEEDS OF GENERAL JACKSON / [followed by a row of six coffins, each 2 x 3/4 inches, each bearing the name of one of the six militia men executed for mutiny at Fort Jackson, on the Tallapoosa River in Alabama, in 1814, dense text printed in five columns, another row of coffins representing more atrocities committed by Jackson, a cut of General Jackson assaulting Samuel Jackson on the streets of Nashville, and a report from Thomas Hart Benton reporting on an altercation between the general and himself in Nashville]

NP: np, 1828. Printed broadside, 18 3/4 x 12 3/8 inches, employing bold type for the two-line head, the entire text enclosed within a wide bold rule and other sections of the broadside marked off with thinner bold rules. The broadside prints "A Brief Account of the Execution of the Six Militia Men," a 16-quatrian poem "Mournful Tragedy," a report on Jackson's massacre of 1000 Indians ?"at the bend of the Tallapousie river?" in 1814, two other reports of Jackson atrocities during the southern Indian wars, and Benton's long report on his disagreements with the general. There are at least 27 different versions of this broadside, according to notes for the William Cook papers housed at the Historic New Orleans Collection; this version appears to differ somewhat from all others for which we have found descriptions. Small printing flaws resulting in two small holes in the Jackson vignette, affecting his profile and jacket, creased and a bit rumpled from folding, but a very good example of a rare issue of this Jackson "coffin" broadside. Folded, pinholes in each corner, with tears, from contemporary mounting. (#6210) This broadside, and others similar to it, became part of the heated Presidential election campaign of 1828 between Jackson and John Quincy Adams. During the Creek war of 1814, six men were court martialed and executed for mutiny (i.e., thinking their enlistments up, they were ready to go home); Jackson reviewed the case, but declined to alter the sentences. The sympathy portrayed for the six militia men in this broadside was intended to cast an unflattering light on Jackson's character and decision-making abilities. An editor in Philadelphia, John Binns, published an account of the executions in the Democratic Press newspaper and the information was used to produce political broadsides and pamphlets during the campaign

        Eigenh. Brief (Fragment).

      O. O., [wohl 1828].. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to.. Beginn eines längeren Briefes an einen nicht ermittelten Empfänger: "Dear Sir / I am truly grieved that my request should have weighed upon your mind in any way, and I most lament having made it at all if it is inductive of pain to you - so, however much I may regret losing the really valuable transcripts of your unsophisticated mind I would rather forgo that pleasure than cause you to be forced back upon scenes and feelings which are too much for your strength. You cannot think how really refreshing it is to read any thing which is perfectly natural, which bears no marks of what is called composition about it - but is the genuine portrait (if I may be allowed to expression) of feelings and thoughts [...] I am very much occupied - almost too much so - but I believe one must not look back or forwards but do diligently every hour what we are called upon to do, and if we act thus under the eye of God by the grace of Jesus Christ, the past and the future will take care of themselves. 'But who is sufficient for these things?' No one does what they ought; we can all preach but who is there that practises? Not I God knows, I am perhaps just beginning to be a good child as I am going on into second childhood. - You will be sorry to hear that Mr Bury has had but indifferent health and it is a constant source of anxiety to me [...] My work 'Flirtation' has a great many enemies - but I think it tends to good, and good only, so I care not - one must make up one's mind to being shot at when one sets up a target - everybody who runs a literary career will meet with these rebuffs. They are fearful at first, but secure of one's motive they become merely gnats, in a summer's eve. - I have begun a very great book - I do not trust in my own strength to bring it to good issue but in that of Him who inspired me with the idea to undertake it [...]". - Faltspuren mit kl. Einrissen.

It was his stated intention "to exemplify the genera and species of the insects of the United States, by means of colored engravings," was hailed upon its appearance as "'the most beautiful publication of the kind' ever issued from an American press" (Weiss & Zeigler, Thomas Say, p.190.) The quality of the plates and the clarity of Say's description won him immediate fame abroad, and he was made a foreign member of the Linnean Society of London. Say named some 1,500 new species - many of his discoveries (such as the American dog tick) were crucial for the future study and control of disease in humans, livestock and crops.         Album of Grand Tour Drawings in Pencil and with Watercolor Wash of Mostly Italian Sights

1828. Quarter Calf. Paper pastedown on boards.. Very Good. Oblong, 11 by 14.5 cm. 40 numbered leaves, with drawings on most pages. Most of the drawings are finished, with mixed in some intermediary, exploratory or unfinished sketches. And by finished, we would note that the artist was meticulous in the rendering of fine detail. These are the work of either a professional or a very accomplished amateur, and that is taking into account that artistic draftsmanship was an artform far more widely cultivated back when than it is today. The paintings and drawings include ruins of temples and the like, the Vatican, Hadrian's Tomb, the Tiber (Tevere), Tivoli, the countryside, arches, harbor scenes, a view of Florence, Santa Maria della Salute in Venice, the Bridge of Sighs in Venice as well. The predominant spirit of the more finished work is in the vein of Claude Lorrain, with an occasional work that is more a stringent study in perspective. There is an assortment of other imagery besides landscapes and architectural views, including a few costume vignettes that are rendered in full color with watercoloring, and other figurative studies, some quite charming if only intermediate studies. Among the delightful vignettes are drawings of farm animals -- donkeys, a ram, etc. Many of the drawings have brief handwritten captions, although we find the cursive elusive to read. The final four pages are all writing, with inscriptions from friends or contacts filling most of the space. It is from this that we have derived the date of 1828. The drawings may be slightly earlier or later, but their style and general spirit is clearly early nineteenth century. Some foxing and scattered soiling. The binding has heavy-ish wear.

Recherches sur la force du coeur aortique. Th?se

Paris: Didot le jeune, 1828. Poiseuille, Jean Léonard Marie (1799-1869). Recherches sur la force du coeur aortique. Th?se . . . 4to. 45pp. Engraved plate. Paris: Didot le jeune, 1828. 257 x 206 mm. Modern quarter calf, marbled boards. Tiny paper flaws in 2 leaves, a few small spots, but fine. First Edition. ?Poiseuille was the first after Stephen Hales to make any important addition to the knowledge of the physiology of circulation. In his graduation thesis, above, he described a ?hemodynamometer? invented by himself and which he used to repeat some of Hales?s blood-pressure experiments. With his hemomanometer, a mercury manometer, which was a great improvement on the long tube used by Hales, Poiseuille showed that the blood-pressure rises and falls on expiration and inspiration, and measured the degree of arterial dilatation produced by each heart beat? (Garrison-Morton.com 767). The above work was Poiseuille?s doctoral thesis; he would go on to make further important contributions to the study of circulatory hydrodynamics, including ?Poiseuille?s law? regarding the resistance to blood flow in a single vessel.

Written by himself

Stockport: printed and sold by James Lomax, Advertiser-Office. 1828. 8vo., (2) + 216 + (2)pp., including the final errata leaf, title-page rather soiled and variable soiling elsewhere, contemporary, probably original, red cloth, rebacked with part of the original label retained, the covers generally soiled and worn, entirely uncut. William Radcliffe (1761?-1842), a Stockport cotton manufacturer and 'improver of cotton machinery' (ODNB), was closely involved with both the politics and technology of factory modernisation in the early years of the 19th century. Attacked by Luddite rioters in March 1812, when his machinery and furniture were destroyed and his wife injured (resulting in her early death a few weeks later), Radcliffe's business collapsed. His semi-autobiographical Origin of the new system of manufacture> is 'a rambling set of recollections' (ODNB) in which he blamed the 'Foreign Anglo Junto' centred on Manchester for all his troubles. Although not published until 1828, Radcliffe tells the reader that 'the narrative ..... was written in the years 1819 to 1822 inclusive, having been addressed in successive letters to a monthly club, the members of which were power-loom manufacturers; which club I had formed> in 1811 .....'.
