Nachricht über das Kollegium von St. Katharina in Parma.

Bellinzona 1828. - 4° (25.3 x 18 cm). 3 ungeheftete Faltbogen (=12 SS.) Bütten-Schreibpapier, davon 9 1/2 Seiten hs.

        Autograph letter (fragment).

      N. p., Presumably 1828. - 4 pp. on double leaf. 4to. Beginning of a letter to an undetermined receiver: "Dear Sir / I am truly grieved that my request should have weighed upon your mind in any way, and I most lament having made it at all if it is inductive of pain to you - so, however much I may regret losing the really valuable transcripts of your unsophisticated mind I would rather forgo that pleasure than cause you to be forced back upon scenes and feelings which are too much for your strength. You cannot think how really refreshing it is to read any thing which is perfectly natural, which bears no marks of what is called composition about it - but is the genuine portrait (if I may be allowed to expression) of feelings and thoughts [.] I am very much occupied - almost too much so - but I believe one must not look back or forwards but do diligently every hour what we are called upon to do, and if we act thus under the eye of God by the grace of Jesus Christ, the past and the future will take care of themselves. 'But who is sufficient for these things?' No one does what they ought; we can all preach but who is there that practises? Not I God knows, I am perhaps just beginning to be a good child as I am going on into second childhood. - You will be sorry to hear that Mr Bury has had but indifferent health and it is a constant source of anxiety to me [.] My work 'Flirtation' has a great many enemies - but I think it tends to good, and good only, so I care not - one must make up one's mind to being shot at when one sets up a target - everybody who runs a literary career will meet with these rebuffs. They are fearful at first, but secure of one's motive they become merely gnats, in a summer's eve. - I have begun a very great book - I do not trust in my own strength to bring it to good issue but in that of Him who inspired me with the idea to undertake it [.]". - Traces of folds with slight tears.

Manuscript on paper, in English. "Album.

[U.K. 8vo (18.9 cm, 7.45"). [143] ff.; illus.. 1828–33] This remarkably substantial collection opens with a neatly hand-inked Burns quotation: "O may the powers the giftie gie me, [/] To see mysel as others see me," followed by two mounted engravings giving the text of the Lord's Prayer and Psalm 100 in extremely "micro" form. From there the volume offers a wide variety of early 19th-century poems, quotations, plates, and original illustrations, preserved on both plain white and on pink, green, yellow, dark blue, and turquoise pages. The => original illustrations include pencil sketches of ships in a stormy sea and of stately country homes, a hand-colored moth (one of two) excised and affixed to a watercolored branch of flowers, a pretty spray of colorful blooms signed by Fanny Simpson of Doncaster, and an oil-painted scene of cows in a misty pastoral setting; among the images taken from printed sources are steel-engraved views of Cliffords Tower and Laythorp Postern, "Feramorz relating the story of the Peri," and a portrait of Sir Walter Scott. The many poems include "Forget-me-not," Thomas Campbell's lines on Hope, "Lines Written in the First Leaf of a Friend's Album" (slightly mistitled here, originally written by Bernard Barton), a meditation on the letter E, and an imitation of "Oh no! we never mention her" that closes with "I never can forget"; some entries, e.g., Jessy Steele's "On Leaving Home," seem to be original/occasional. Also present is => an original poem signed by John Roby, folklorist and author of Traditions of Lancashire, with the version as inscribed here in Roby's hand (titled "The hush'd Tempest" and dated Rochdale, 1828) differing slightly from "The Storm," the published form which appeared in The Investigator in 1820. There is one page offering a puzzle; another offers one verse in French; and a third presents us with => a particularly fine version of "The Map of Matrimony," beautifully rendered and with a verse from Cowper underneath. It is possible that more extended sleuthing than we can indulge in might locate this book within a particular family and circle. Fanny Simpson, signing one of her several charming artistic contributions at full length, gives us a Doncaster connection. An "M. Simpson" / "M.S." appears more than once; was the "Isabella" / "Isabella S" who signed her contribution from Byron intimately, with her given name only, a sister? There are Bayne, Newall, and Stockdale connections; at least TWO Steeles made entries, the Jessy above and also Thomas, who contributed a number of entries penned in calligraphic mode — one or two of these signed in full and many others signed "T.S." Was John Roby a family friend?? Half black sheep in imitation of morocco over marbled paper–covered sides, leather edges (including corners) with gilt roll, spine gilt extra; binding rubbed and scuffed overall, but still dignified. All edges gilt. Pages slightly age-toned, with occasional small spots; a few instances of offsetting from or uneven fading to colored paper. Some plates foxed. A rich and warmly evocative early 19th-century commonplace book, one emanating both Sense and Sensibility as well cultivated in Accomplishments.

MEMOIRES DE VIDOCQ, CHEF DE LA POLICE DE SURETE, JUSQU'EN 1827.

Tenon, Libraire-Editeur, 1828 - 1829., 1828 -1829. All four volumes are first editions. Each is 8vo. Volume One is compiled from Vidocq's notes by Emile Morice; Volumes Two, Three, and Four are by Louis Francois L'Hertier. Each is bound in 1/4 uniform red leather with maroon and red marbled boards, marbled endpapers. Gold gilt spine lettering, and ruled lines. Volumes One to Three are signed by Vidocq as called for. Engraved portrait of Vidocq as the frontispiece of Volume Four. Vidocq is regarded by Haycraft/Queen as "The Grandfather Of The Detective Story." Vidocq rose from a life of crime to Chief of the Surete and innovator of many scientific procedures to catch criminals. Vidocq (1775-1857) had a tremendous influence on contemporary and later authors of the genre: "Poe, Hugo, Balzac, Dumas, Dickens, Collins, and Doyle. The fullest and most direct fictional expression of the Vidocq influence, however, occurred in the works of his compatriot, Emile Gaboriau (1833-1873)."- Murder For Pleasure p.29 -30. Bindings a little scuffed on the edges, but bright and unfaded. The contents complete with all half titles. Spotted throughout and with a previous owner’s ink stamp on the title page of each volume. Bookplate on the pastedown of all four volumes. An attractive very good set. A hugely popular character and a very influential story. Balzac’s character Vautrin is based on the convict-policeman. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.

RAIL ROAD MARCH. FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY. DEDICATED TO THE DIRECTORS OF THE BALTIMORE & OHIO RAIL ROAD. COMPOSED & ARRANGED FOR THE PIANO FORTE

Baltimore, 1828. Quarto. Dbd. Some foxing and soiling. About very good. "Second edition," following the first of the same year. Scarce printing of the sheet music for a march composed for the groundbreaking of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, featuring one of the earliest illustrations of a railroad in the United States that we know of, showing the engine and four small cars. The engineer stands on the side of the engine, and the fireman sits on the front of the tender. The scene is surmounted by a large eagle, which holds two shields in its beak, one of which resembles the Maryland state flag. The music was composed by Christopher Meineke, a German-born composer and pianist who settled in Baltimore, composed much original music (both sacred and secular), and was for many years the organist of St. Paul's Church. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first passenger railroad in the United States, and on July 4, 1828 a huge celebration was held for the groundbreaking of the line, at the site of the present Camden Yards baseball park in Baltimore. This sheet music was written for that momentous event. Not in Wolfe's bibliography of secular music in America, though he does list many other compositions by Meineke. OCLC locates a total of six copies of this second edition.

[CONSECUTIVE RUN OF LOUISIANA LAWS FROM THE FIRST SEVENTEEN SESSIONS OF THE STATE LEGISLATURE, 1812 - 1828]

New Orleans, 1828. Uniform 20th-century buckram, gilt leather labels. Small ink library stamp to titlepages, embossed blind-stamp to most titlepages, occasional ink ownership signature, some small paper repairs, minor foxing, some leaves closely trimmed, a few small marginal tears, including the bottom corner of one titlepage, some tears with minor effect to text (individually enumerated in the detailed list below), minor occasional staining, mostly marginal or in the gutters. Overall, a good set. An superb consecutive set of the first seventeen session laws issued after Louisiana achieved statehood in 1812, comprising the laws from the first session of the first "General Assembly" or legislature to the second session of the Eighth Legislature. A wealth of interesting information on the early affairs of Louisiana, at a time when the state was at the western extreme of the United States. The first volume contains much to be expected from a first legislature: a resolution giving the legislature's assent to "an enlargement of the limits of the State of Louisiana," an act regarding the salaries of various state officials, an act establishing election methods for various public offices including the U.S. House of Representatives, an act authorizing a state loan, and an act to organize a "Corps of Militia for the Service of the State of Louisiana." Understandably, there is a voluminous amount of information regarding slavery in the state throughout the laws. During the first session of the legislature alone, two of the twenty- four acts enumerated concern reimbursement from state funds for lost slaves (one to imprisonment and one killed while trying to run away). There are also acts relative to runaway slaves, private emancipation, and more. Towards the end of the run, the eighth legislature passed an act prohibiting entry of slaves into the state for purposes of sale. Other acts contained here organize the City of New Orleans into wards, with various and numerous laws on internal improvements, civil law, and criminal law. While individual volumes come to the market on occasion, nothing like this group has ever been offered at retail; it is a collection that would be impossible to assemble today on a book-by-book basis.       - Kunst- und Gewerbebl. Bay., 24/1-52. FLORA AUSTRALASICA; OR, A SELECTION OF HANDSOME, OR CURIOUS PLANTS, NATIVES OF NEW HOLLAND, AND THE SOUTH SEA ISLANDS; CONTAINING COLOURED FIGURES AND DESCRIPTIONS OF SOME OF THE CHOICEST SPECIES

London, 1828. Contemporary embossed cloth, expertly rebacked with original gilt backstrip laid down. Light wear and sun fading to binding. Minute foxing. Plates generally quite clean. Very good. An important and rare work of Australian botany, a pioneering effort in describing plants from Australia and the South Seas which had been brought to England. Illustrated with fifty-six elegant handcolored plates, all richly colored. The letterpress descriptions are numbered 1 to 56, each occupying two pages and accompanied by a stunning handcolored engraved botanical plate. Sweet presented the plants as suitable for garden cultivation, noting that "the greater part are handsome evergreen shrubs, and many produce sweet-scented flowers...." Sweet (1783-1835) was a notable British nurseryman who wrote extensively on botanical subjects, including HORTUS SUBURBANUS LONDINENSIS (1818), HORTUS BRITANNICUS (1826- 27), BOTANICAL CULTIVATOR (1821), THE BRITISH FLOWER GARDEN (1823-29), and numerous other titles. All of the plants described here are ones Sweet cultivated in England, and thus all of the plates were drawn from live specimens. His work in this regard was based directly on the methods of Sir Joseph Banks.

Journal of a voyage to Peru: a passage across the cordillera of the Andes, in the winter of 1827, performed on foot in the snow; and a journey across the pampas. By Lieut. Chas. Brand, R.N.

Alle vier Tafeln drawn by Lieut. First edition of this interesting account by a lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Brand’s descriptions contains a great deal of information on both Chile and Argentina in addition to Peru during a time of great political changes. Brand also visited the Juan Fernandez Islands on his trip back to Buenos Aires. The British naval officer’s evocative account of a stormy winter crossing of the Andes he made by mule and on foot in 1827. Brand travelled to Peru via Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo and Buenos Aires. His journal comments on the Rio’s slave market, the botanical Gardens and social life. The book is bound by thread in a red modern full leather case with nonacid leafs between the four plates and the surrounding text. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

SAD TALES AND GLAD TALES; By Reginald Reverie [pseudonym] ...

Boston: S. G. Goodrich, 141 Washington Street,. 1828. original drab boards with purple cloth shelf back, printed paper label affixed to spine panel, all edges untrimmed.. Free endpapers removed, cloth a bit sunned, boards rubbed at edges. and lightly spotted and soiled, a very good copy. (#137510). First edition. Grenville Mellen (1799-1841), lawyer, author, born in Biddeford (now in the State of Maine), contributed poems, prose sketches and tales to the UNITED STATES LITERARY GAZETTE and to the literary annuals, THE ATLANTIC SOUVENIR and THE LEGENDARY. SAD TALES AND GLAD TALES, Mellen's first and only collection of prose sketches and stories, "is interesting chiefly as pioneer work leading up to the short story as later developed by Hawthorne and Poe. His tales show the influence of Irving, but are more diffuse, sentimental, and mystifying." - DAB. According to Locke (Voyages in Space [2011] V564), "The Meeting of the Planets" is "a literary satire in which the planets and stars are given personalities and discourse among themselves"; while "The Tale of an Aeronaut" concerns a balloonist who "ascends into space and drifts among the planets and comets listening in on their conversations, including the Moon plotting against Earth, before returning to Earth to find himself over the Battle of Waterloo." Locke, Voyages in Space (2011) V564. Foley, p. 194. Wright (I) 1859.
