        Salix.

      - Vienna, Typis viduae Antonii Strauss, 1828. Large folio (485 x 340mm). pp. (x), 34, with 105 fine hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary marbled boards. First edition of this magnificent monograph on willows. A large uncut copy. The plates are by J. Ibmayer, who also did the illustrations for the author's work on grasses. It is one of the last great Austrian botanical books stemming from the Jacquin's 'golden age' of Imperial patronage. The plates are very much in the 'Jacquin' style, elegantly engraved and highly coloured in watercolours and bodycolours.Host (1761-1834) was Imperial physician to Franz I and Jacquin's successor as the director of the Schönbrunn Botanic Gardens, a position he held for over 40 years. A second volume of this work was planned (hence the 'Vol. I' on the title) but never published; the manuscript material for this volume is in the Porträtsammlung of the Nationalbibliothek, Vienna. "It emerges from the foreword to 'Salix' that Host had hiked through 'the provinces of Austria', had examined the willows in their natural surroundings, had cultivated them, and observed them at all seasons." (H.W. Lack, Garden Eden p. 420).The work is quite rare, and the only copy to appear at auction in recent years was the De Belder copy (Sotheby's, April 27, 1987, lot 165 Pounds 15400 and same copy Christie's, March 17, 1999, lot 44 Pounds 16.000).Provenance: Title and dedication leaf with with oval stamp 'Siebenbürgischer Verein für Nat. "Brongiart was the architect of the science of paleobotany. In his 'Histoire', he examined fossil flora of different geological eras, providing 200 illustrations, of several figures each, to demonstrate the principles of classification and distribution, the historical development of plant life, and the relation between extinct and existing forms. Brongiart identified four distinct periods in the history of plant life, and drew a picture of gradual changes within the periods, that provided a botanical confirmation of the progressive model of biological development already derived from the studies in animal life" (The Haskell F.         De la percussion médiate et des signes obtenus à l'aide de ce nouveau moyen d'exploration dans les maladies des organes thoraciques et abdominaux

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

An Historical Sketch of the Greek Revolution

White, Gallagher & White 1828 - First edition. xii, 447 pages 20 cm. An important book on the Greek War for Independence. Howe served as Surgeon in Chief for the Greek Fleet and as an active belligerent. Original boards. Rebacked. Hand colored folding map. Foxing throughout. Damp stain. Blackmer 837. Atabey 595 Droulia 1526. During the 1820s, America saw a rise in concern over the Greek fight for Independence. It was seen as a mirror to America's own revolution and spawned American philhellenes to move to Greece and join the fight. Samuel Gridley Howe, one of the noted philhellene, left Harvard in 1824 and soon joined the Greek army as a surgeon. However, his services soon became more of a military nature and his deeds and personality earned him the title "the Lafayette of the Greek Revolution." Though he had letters written to family on the crisis printed in American papers, the Greek government, on their behest, sent him back to procure funds and provisions. During this speaking tour, he wrote Historical Sketch of the Greek Revolution, to reach further audiences with the plight of the Greek people.         COSTUMI VESTITI ALLA FESTA DA BALLO DATA IN MILANO DAL NOBILISSIMO SIGNOR CONTE GIUSEPPE BATTHYANY LA SERA DEL 30 GENNAIO 1828. (Prop. del. litog. G. Elena).

(presso Gius. Conte A.G.

(...) NB.         Court Game of Astrophilogeon

London W. Davy for Charles Hodges c 1828 - 60 engraved cards (the latitude and declinations hand-coloured), together with the 72-page instructions booklet A Short Treatise on Astronomy (as issued in limp cloth, spine torn), together in publisher's blindstamped red morocco case with flap, title gilt lettered on upper cover, approximately 9.1 x 6.1 cm. A well preserved example in excellent condition. A scarce astronomical card game, with the full compliment of 60 cards (30 constellations and 30 maps), and the accompanying rule book. Charles Hodges operated as a bookseller and stationer at 27 Portman Street, Portman Square, London, from 1825-6 until 1830. Following the tradition of engraved pictorial playing cards depicting educational, scientific and other subjects, which had its heyday in England during the 17th-18th centuries, Hodges published Geographical and Astronomical packs starting in around 1827. The present pack dealing with astronomy had numeral cards carrying diagrams of constellations and their pictorial representations; the court cards represent classical deities. The aim of the game was to obtain pairs of map and constellation cards from similar parts of the terrestrial and celestial globes. Information about the locality was printed at the bottom of the cards and the latitude or declination was displayed as a corner index at the top left under a large 'N' or 'S'. The maps which were used in the Geographical cards were re-used, without any suit signs stencilled in, to complete the Astrophilogeon decks. The geographical cards include United States, China, Brazil, Arabia, Persia, the booklet providing a succinct summary of their principal qualities.         Gesammelte Schriften.

Erste Ausgabe. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
