The Rht. Honble. George Pitt Lord Rivers

London: Published by M. Colnaghi, 23 Cockspur Street, 1827. Mezzotint. Printed on wove paper. In good condition with the exception of some surface soiling in the margins. Crease within center of image. Mended tear on top margin not extending into image. Mended tear on right margin. Fold along bottom margin. Image size: 15 7/8 x 13 inches. A remarkable portrait by James Agasse of his patron George Pitt, the second Baron Rivers, with his two prized greyhounds. James Laurent Agasse was a noted animal and landscape painter who worked in London at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Agasse was born in Geneva and received his first artistic training there. In 1800 he settled in London at the invitation of his patron the Hon. George Pitt, the second Baron Rivers. While in London he painted a number of fine equestrian and greyhound portraits for Pitt, including this portrait, which is noted as one of his most successful paintings. His devotion to the study of anatomy and his meticulous painting style made him a huge success in England, and he was widely recognized as one of the most adept animal painters of his day. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy between 1801 and 1845, and this distinguished portrait is a wonderful example of his skillful painting and meticulous anatomical observation. Quoted in the Dictionary of National Biography , the writer of the panegyric states, "that it was not for bread or for grain that he laboured, but that he was urged forward by the resistless force of natural genius." O'Donoghue, Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits...in the British Museum 1; Lane Sporting Aquatints and their engravers 72-73; Dictionary of National Biography.

The treatyse of fysshynge wyth an angle.

London: Printed ... for William Pickering [by Thomas White] 8vo (19 cm, 7.5"). Frontis., [2], xiii (pagination skips v–viii), [1], 41, [1] pp.; 4 plts.. 1827 First Pickering edition of the first known English work on fishing. Reprinted from the Boke of St. Albans, the famed sporting book originally published by Wynkyn de Worde in 1496, this essay on angling is generally attributed — although not certainly so — to Dame Juliana Berners (or Barnes), supposed prioress of Sopwell nunnery circa 1450. If that attribution is correct, this is not only the earliest printed English work on fishing, but also one of the earliest published English works by a female author. Regardless of its source, it seems to have served as an inspiration both to Izaak Walton and to William Pickering, who printed several editions of Walton, including a particularly lavish production in 1836. The volume is printed with the original language and spelling preserved, and is illustrated with a woodcut frontispiece of a fisherman taken from de Worde's 1518 edition that is cited as the earliest known depiction of an angler fishing with a rod, as well as with six woodcuts (provided at the back of the volume in the form of four plates) showing types of poles, hooks, etc. As the title-page proclaims, the work was printed with the types of John Baskerville, making it one of the last such printings done in England. A later hand has helpfully added pencilled marginalia clarifying archaic or obscure terms and suggesting subject headers. => This copy uncut and in original boards: Rare thus. Publisher's dun-colored light boards. Uncut copy. Light overall rubbing; spine with minor loss of paper. Old bookseller's description affixed to front free endpaper; small oval stain to corner of half-title and frontispiece, a bit of light offsetting from plates. A very nice copy in a later open-back cardboard slipcase.

A manuscript log maintained on board the American schooner, Mars, during a voyage in September and October 1827 from New London, Connecticut towards Port Santiago, Mexico. The journal abruptly concludes with the ship running aground as it attempts to reach the harbor in Mexico. The anonymous author provides much detail on the various attempts to save the ship in the midst of very harsh weather and the eventual decision to abandon the vessel, salvaging whatever was possible "to be sold on the beach for the good of the owners with all her tackle, apparel, and furniture such as could be got safe on shore." The remainder of the journal covers the ship's departure from New London until the shipwreck. Daily entries include records of the ship's course and speed, latitude readings, and wind directions. Additional remarks regarding the progress of the voyage, wind, weather, sails, rigging, and events on board are recorded each day in a section devoted to "remarks and transactions on board." The activities of the crew are usually recorded simply as "employed variously." In early October, Captain Sandforth Kidder became ill with fever. He did not recover for the rest of the voyage, being taken ashore in Mexico just prior to the ship's attempt to reach shore. A fine firsthand account of a shipwreck and the various attempts to save the vessel.

Views of the Seats of the Noblemen and Gentlemen in Suffolk.

Southwold, "Published by the Author", 1827. - "Royal quarto" (32.2 x 25.5 cm.), original printed wrappers (spine gone; minor fraying and one short tear [2 cm.] to outer edge of front wrapper, light soiling). Light waterstains at beginning of volume affecting six plates (mostly in the blank margins); some toning and foxing, but not affecting the plates. Overall in very good condition. (1 blank l., 21 ll.), 20 engraved plates. Printed list of plates on verso of front wrapper. List of subscribers (on verso of another list of subscribers for the author's @The Architectural Antiquities of Suffolk) tipped in at beginning of volume. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. First part, all published, of a projected volume of engraved views of country houses in Suffolk, with accompanying descriptive text, planned by its author on similar lines to J.P. Neale's well-known series Views of Seats (of which publication had begun in 1818). The views themselves, engraved by J. Lambert from Davy's own drawings, are of good artistic quality and are a helpful record of the exterior appearance of a number of smaller country houses in Suffolk, some unfamiliar, others since altered or demolished. (One wonders which architect of the early or mid-eighteenth century designed Hintlesham Hall, where in 1827 there was a room "fitted up as a museum. with a collection of natural and artificial curiosities, and antiquities.") In an "address to subscribers" dated December 1826, recorded as bound into another copy of this book, the author explains that the book was to have been published by subscription, but the cost of the publication had not been properly calculated. Although it was still his intention at that date to issue forty plates in all, the present "first part", issued in four numbers of five plates each, was all that ever appeared. The copies subscribed for numbered about 180, of which some thirty-three were to have the plates in india-paper proof, and some sixty-five were to be issued in large quarto format, as the present copy (the remainder of the edition was to be octavo). Not all these copies were necessarily distributed, and the book is certainly very uncommon today. *** Not in BAL @Catalogue (although mentioned in passing by the compilers in the note to their no. 822). Copac adds Society of Antiquaries in London, Oxford University, and Victoria & Albert Libraries. Not in Fresco. Not in Iris. NUC: @Supplement: DeU. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Narrative of Don Juan Van Halen's Imprisonment in the Dungeons of the Inquisition at Madrid, and His Escape in 1817 and 1818; to Which are Added His Journey to Russia, His Campaign with the Army of the Caucasus, and His Return to Madrid in 1821

London: Henry Colburn, 1827. Hardcover. Very good. First edition in English. Two volumes, pp. xix, 380, with frontis portrait and two folding facsimiles; xv, 496. with frontis portrait, two folding panoramas, and folding sketch map of the Caucasus and Georgia. Contemporary marbled boards, rebacked with modern calf spine with gilt rules and red label. Edges and corners rubbed. Bindings sound, text with some foxing and offsetting. A Spaniard of Dutch heritage, Van Halen (1788-1864) entered the Spanish navy in 1803, sailing to Cuba and Mexico. In 1808 he became involved in the Peninsula Campaign, first fighting for the Spanish, then briefly joining the French after being taken prisoner, and finally returning to the Spanish side, boldly fooling the French into surrendering three forts by dressing as a French officer and presenting forged documents announcing a treaty. He received a promotion for this coup, but in 1817 fell victim to the Inquisition and was (according to his own account) imprisoned and tortured. Escaping to Russia, he spent 18 months as a colonel in the Caucasus Dragoon Regiment under General Yermalov in Tblisi, Georgia. Despite some likely fictional elements, this account of his adventures is generally regarded as based in truth. British traveler and scholar John Frederick Baddeley describes it as "one of the best of the early books of travel and adventure in the Caucasus" (Russian Conquest of the Caucasus, p. 123).         The treatyse of fysshynge wyth an angle.

London: William Pickering 8vo (18.1 cm, 7.2"). Later half calf and marbled paper–covered sides, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label, gilt-decorated raised bands, and gilt-stamped fishing creel devices in compartments; spine label with small edge chips and mild rubbing to paper. Pencilled annotations as above, pages and plates otherwise pleasingly clean.

The Trial of Edward Gibbon Wakefield, William Wakefield, and Fances Wakefield, indicted with one servant, and Edward Thevenot, a servant, for a conspiracy, and for the abduction of Miss Ellen Turner, the only child and heiress of William Turner, Esq

London: John Murray, 1827. Octavo, with the half-title, endpapers foxed, marbled edges; contemporary calf, (spine rubbed). An early pencilled signature on front free endpaper, contemporary newspaper cutting recounting the trial on rear endpaper. The case and subsequent imprisonment of Wakefield in Newgate for three years led him on a path to redemption. As noted by Ferguson 'during his imprisonment he pondered schemes a reform in the penal laws, and for the advancement of emigration and colonization, which in after years he promoted with such conspicuous ability'. A very good copy in an attractive contemporary binding of this scarce work and an essential foundation work for a collection on South Australia.
