Ending with Psalms [CXIX], remaining fourth volume absent. Three volume set only (missing Hagiography and New Testament; also without prolegomena from Samuel Lee) . The most inclusive of the great Polyglots since the London, or Walton's, Polyglot of 1657, it was printed by Samuel Bagster of Paternoster Row: The first issue [our set] of the â??Biblia Sacra Polyglotta Bagsterianaâ?? appeared between 1817 and 1828, four volumes in foolscap octavo and quarto form, containing, besides the prolegomena of Dr. Samuel Lee, the Hebrew Old Testament with points, the Samaritan Pentateuch, the Septuagint Greek version of the Old Testament, the Latin Vulgate, the authorised English version, the Greek Textus Receptus of the New Testament, and the Peshito or ancient Syriac version. However, due to a fire at the printers in March 1822, very few of these sets were actually distributed; In particular, Lowndes states only twenty-three copies of the New Testament portion [the one volume missing in our set] were preserved. A folio edition of the polyglot was published in 1828, repeated in 1831, and subsequently, presenting eight languages at the opening of the volume, and including all the ancient and modern versions above mentioned. Copies of the different texts and translations were brought out separately, and in various combinations. The two volume folio edition (1828; printed many times thereafter) , encompassing the complete old and new testament in eight languages, is more commonly found. The third fascicle in the set has a pasted in advertisement on verso of board, announcing that the polylglott bible will soon be issued in a two part series. Subjects: Polyglot Bible â?? 1827-1828. Biblia sacra polyglotta Bagsteriana. Not a single set of the first issue listed on OCLC. A single listing exists for a single volume, which survives at a library in Scottland. Original printed Boards worn and rubbed at edges, outer edges of leaves lightly bumped, spine rebacked, otherwise fresh and clean. Very good condition. (SPEC-39-20)

[ Edition originale ]

Fine copy of the two very scarce original offprints by Silvestre de Sacy (OCLC records only two copies of the first one in the USA - Cornell and Standford according to OCLC, two copies in Cambridge and Manchester on COPAC - , no copy of the second one located in the USA, only one copy at Manchester University according to COPAC ).

(Francesco Mazzoni in Enciclopedia Dantesca, 1970). Octavo. Original blue paper wrappers printed in black. Italian bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Spine strengthened at foot with tape, slight foxing throughout; an excellent copy. First edition. De la peine de mort was the Belgian journalist and prison reformer's first book, written when he was twenty-three years old. He argued that the alternative to capital punishment was a prison system centred on the improvement of the prisoner.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

[Stuttgart, 22.1.1827]. - 1 S., verso Adresse (Faltbrief). 4to. Beiliegend Stahlstichportrait. - Verso in roter Tinte Empfängervermerk: "Dr. Spuren alter Montage in Registraturband. Nicht bei: Hauff, Werke II (Hg. H. Engelhard, Stuttgart 1962); Hauff; Werke II (Hg. B. Zeller, Frankfurt 1969). Vgl. S.         Publicity album produced by the society.

Birmingham: Printed by B. Hudson,, 1827. Quarto (259 x 204 mm). Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, raised bands, titles to compartment and decorations to bands gilt, decorations to compartments in blind, edges speckled red, marbled endpapers. With 5 engravings printed by the society, as well as 19 sketches, 10 in pencil and 9 in water colour. Birmingham Bookbinder's ticket to front pastedown. Joints skilfully repaired, extremities slightly bumped, boards lightly rubbed, occasional spotting to text block. A very good copy. A rare publicity album produced by the Female Society for the Relief of British Negro Slaves in Birmingham for fund raising and an early example of shock publicity tactics. Active between 1825 and 1919, the Society sought to "waken attention, circulate information, and introduce to the notice of the affluent and influential classes? acknowledge of the real state of suffering and humiliation under which British Slaves yet groan" (Annual Report 1825). Subscriptions were collected from members of the Society as well as donations from other interested parties, and the monies then forwarded to anti-slavery groups in Britain or overseas. The monies received by the society were also responsible for funding specific projects, two of which included black American Booker Taliaferro Washington (1856-1915 who was responsible for founding the Tuskegee Institute, Alabama and Amanda Smith (1837-1915). Produced to promote their ideas, albums such as this consist of a mixture of anti-slavery items especially printed for the society. This album includes: - "An Extract from Colonel Arthur's Letter." This leaf describes the state of "the slave Kitty at the post of a bed, with chain was bound round so close that she could not stand or move. I saw a cut upon her left ear, and many stripes upon her back: her face bore visible marks of whipping ? ." - The Second Report of the Female Society for Birmingham, West Bromwich, Wednesbury, Walsall, and their respective neighbourhoods, for the relief of British Negro Slaves. Established 1825. (Birmingham: Printed by B. Hudson, Bull Street. [1826]). - Extracts from the Royal Jamaica Gazette, Volume XLVIII, No. 40. From Saturday, September 30, to Saturday, October 7, 1826 (Jamaica: Alex. Aikman, 1826). - CLARKSON, Thomas. Negro Slavery: Argument, That the Colonial Slaves are better off than the British Peasantry, Answered, from the Royal Jamaica Gazette (1824). - In the Jamaica Gazette of July 3, 1824 is contained the following Advertisement? Here we have a negro man, claimed as a slave by no one, accused of no crime, but who is seized as a runaway, put in jail, and at last sold for the payment of his jail fees? - Ladies Society for the Relief of Negro Slaves. Card Explanatory of the Contents of the Society's Work Bags and Albums (Birmingham, c. 1826). - Twenty-Six Points of Comparison between Hebrew Slavery, under the Mosaic Dispensation?; fifteen centuries anterior to the light of Christianity, and British Colonial & American Slavery, under the Christian Dispensation, in the early part* of the Nineteenth Century after Christ ? ([Bristol] J. Taylor, Printer, Bristol MirrorOffice, Small-street. [1823]). - Case of the Vigilante, a Ship Employed in the Slave-Trade with Some Reflections on That Traffic (London: Harvey Darton, 1826) - The Worn-Out Negro Slave. Also included are 5 engravings depicting slaves, as well as 19 pencil and water colour sketches by a previous owner depicting Cornish countryside. OCLC lists only three other copies of such albums, two at Princeton and one in Birmingham; most likely many of the albums have been broken up for their contents. The contents in this album are consistent with the copies held at Princeton.

A Voyage to the Moon: with some Account of the Manners and Customs, Science and Philosophy, of the people of Morosofia, and other Lunarians.

New York: Elam Bliss,, 1827. Octavo (190 x 106 mm). Contemporary tree sheep, red morocco label. Ownership inscription "J. Beatty Jenning" to the front free endpaper in pencil. Joints cracking and corners lightly worn, intermittent foxing, more severe in places, but a very fine copy in unrestored condition. First edition of a scarce lunar imaginary voyage, "regarded by many as the first genuine work of science fiction to emanate from an American author" (Howgego), written by George Tucker, an American lawyer born in Bermuda, appointed by Thomas Jefferson in 1825 as professor of moral philosophy at the University of Virginia. In A Voyage to the Moon, "the hero and pseudonymous author Joseph Atterley, a native of Long Island, takes a voyage to the Orient in one of his father's ships. The ship founders off the Burmese coast and Atterley is captured and taken inland. While under a sort of house arrest, he meets Gurameer, a Brahmin who has been to the moon. With the help of some natives they construct an air-tight vessel made partly of lunarium (a metal that repels the earth and is attracted to the moon), and after a three-day voyage the two travellers land in the lunar region of Morosofia. The moon, together with its Mongoloid population and its flora and fauna, is a dislocated fragment of the earth. The progress of the two men through the lunar society, and their meeting with the excessively foolish Glonglins, becomes a vehicle for satire, prediction and social comment, many familiar personalitites being represented by anagrams and puns (e.g. Vindar is Darwin; Lozzi Pozzi is Pestalozzi; and Wighurd is William Godwin). The travellers eventually return to earth, landing in South America where the Brahmin travels the Andes to confirm certain theories about the moon's origin and Atterley returns by ship to New York." (Howgego).

Personal Narrative of Adventures in the Peninsula during the War in 1812-1813. By an Officer late in the Staff Corps Regiment of Cavalry.

London: John Murray, 1827 - Octavo (183 x 111 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, decorative gilt spine, green morocco label, red & brown speckled edges. Contemporary armorial bookplate of Alexander Gordon of Auchlunies, uncle to Wellington's chief ADC Sir Alexander Gordon. A crisp, clean copy in a lovely period binding. Wood engraving (at p. 239) of the main gateway at Palencia. First edition of this decidedly uncommon Peninsula War narrative; Copac locates seven copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Manchester, Scotland, Southampton); not in OCLC. Buckham served mainly with the commissary and his first-hand account is an important one, particularly in that his approach to the campaign diverged from other writers of the time: "E. W. Buckham's Personal Narrative. which commiserated the soldiers' suffering rather than celebrate military adventure, was similarly criticised by the 'Naval and Military Magazine', which doubted that the author had even truly been a 'military man'" (Neil Ramsey, The Military Memoir and Romantic Literary Culture, 1780-1835, 2011, p. 75).         Monkey-Ana or Men in Miniature

London: Moon Boys & Graves, 1827. Prints. Very Good. Landseer, Thomas. Folio. 25 etched plates including the "Satirical Title" and "Contents" leaves; originally sold in six issues, each with four captioned prints. All but the title page and two of the prints are etchings on china paper, most are approximately 7" x 8.5". They are mounted on heavy, rag paper stock, approximately 10" x 15: (the title page and contents leaves are a little shorter). The other two prints are on thick rag paper stock of a lesser grade. This famous anthropomorphic work shows exceptionally life-like monkeys portraying scenes and passages from classic plays (e.g., Dryden and Shakespeare), popular songs (e.g., Ruini), poems (e.g., Byron, Cowper, and Pope), and slang (e.g., "Hookey Walker"). Although Landseer is best known for producing engravings and etchings of paintings by his more famous younger brother, Sir Edwin Landseer, Monkey-Ana shows that he was also an artist in his own right. The etchings all have fine impressions; some are identified as proofs. The mounts have some minor edge wear and toning; it appears that they may have once been bound. Scanner size limitations preclude capturing entire leaves in the accompanying images. Each of the individual prints is suitable for framing, or, if bound as a whole this would make for a very attractive book.

        Missa Solemnis.

1827 1827 - BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van. [Missa Solemnis. Opus 123]. Text in Latin. Plate number 2346. [2], 299, [1] pp. Lithographed title, music engraved throughout. Folio, 345 x 275 mm, bound in original publisher's printed beige wrappers, backed with gray cloth. Preserved in nineteenth-century half vellum folding chemise. Paris: B. Schott, 1827. First Edition, trade issue, of the full score of a work generally considered to be one of Beethoven's supreme achievements. "Between October 1822 and February 1824 Beethoven completed three works which are in one way or another as gigantic as the Hammerklavier Sonata: the Diabelli Variations, the Mass in D (Missa solemnis) and the Ninth Symphony" (Joseph Kerman, Alan Tyson - with Scott G. Burnham, Oxford Music Online). "Unquestionably a great work, representing Beethoven at the height of his powers, it has notably failed to reach the popularity of many of the symphonies and sonatas . Compared to other works of similar stature, the Missa Solemnis is rarely performed. Its notoriously difficult choral parts make it a stumbling block for many orchestras who only have access to volunteer choirs. Limited performances of the work have made it far less known than Beethoven's other large works." With the price "19 fl. 24 kr." on front cover and no list of subscribers. With the yellow Schott & Co. of London printed ticket on front cover and their blindstamp at top of first leaf. Two copies in OCLC; Morgan Library NYC and Oxford University.       (Rom?), 1827.Lithographie (Luigi M. Valadier. Bücher it
