Tome premier. 799 Seiten. First printing of his most important 1814 work on complex-variable function theory. Between 1814 and 1831, the great french mathematician Augustin Louis Cauchy created practically single-handedly a new branch of pure mathematics. Complex function theory was and remains of central mportance, and ist creation marked the start of one of the most exciting periods in the development of mathematics. A first memoir was written in 1814 and published in 1827 (here) and a second memoir with same title was published in 1824 (Paris: de Bure). Lit.: Smithis, in: Landmark Writings in Western mathematica 1640-1940, edited by I. Grattan-Guiness, Roger Cooke, pp. 377 ff. "In 1814 he submitted to the French Academy the treatise on definite integrals that was to become the basis of the theory of complex functions. In 1816 he won a prize contest of the French Academy on the propagation of waves at the surface of a liquid; his results are now classics in hydrodynamics." (DSB). Flora Australasica; or a selection of handsome or curious plants, natives of New Holland, and the South Sea Islands..

London: James Ridgway, 1827. A few scattered age spots otherwise very good.. Royal octavo, with 56 engraved plates in fine contemporary handcolouring; a fine, large copy, bound in handsome quarter green morroco, marbled boards, top edge gilt. First edition; one of the most attractive of all Australian botanical books and the first with illustrations taken from live specimens rather than dried plants or field sketches - the species depicted having been grown from seeds in London nurseries. This experimentation directly resulted from Joseph Banks's methods and indicates how widely his influence had spread. This was the third illustrated work devoted to the botany of Australia (the first was James Edward Smith's of 1793, and the second Bauer's exceptionally rare Illustrationes Floræ Novæ Hollandiæ of 1813). Sweet's book represents a departure from its two predecessors. As a horticulturist, rather than a scientific botanist or botanical artist, he was more interested in the cultivation than the classification of exotic plants. During the last ten years of his life he published a number of botanical works which catered for the educated English public in the same way as Paxton's and Curtis's botanical magazines. No fewer than nine plants are distinctly noted as having been collected in western Australia, chiefly from the vicinity of King George's Sound (modern Albany). A further 16 are noted as from the "south coast of New Holland", with the majority of the rest coming from around Port Jackson and Tasmania. Sweet includes, where possible, field notes on the plants, and it is interesting to see that a large number were collected in Australia personally by the little-known William Baxter, gardener to one Francis Henchman Esq. of Clapton Nursery. Baxter had been sent out by Henchman with the express view of collecting plants in remote regions. This is a fine and fresh copy of the book, with bright handcolouring to the plates, which were drawn by one of the finest botanical artists of the day - Edwin Dalton Smith of Chelsea, for many years attached to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. In style it bridges a gap between late-eighteenth-century botanical art, generally of a most "refined" nature, and the nineteenth-century variations, which led to the often less exquisite lithograph.

Kyoto 1827 - Small quarto. 2, 31, 4ff. Illustrated with thirty color wood-block prints by ukiyo-e artist Kawamura Kiho. Kiho, who was also known as Shun, Goitsu, and Chikurikwan, was the adopted son and acknowledged disciple of artist Kawamura Bumpo. Both Bumpo and Kiho are stylistically similar to the the Shijo school, which preferred gray and black lines highlighted with pale blushes of color over the more vivid ukiyo-e style popular at the end of the eighteenth century. These light colors are perfectly suited to this sensitive collection, most of which illustrate simple and quiet scenes from everyday life. Farmers and fisherman are interspersed with portraits of plants and animals. Of especial interest are three prints of people reading-a farmer bundling rice while reading a book laid open on the ground, a bearded man huddling beneath a lamp, and man lounging beneath a full moon. The images are preceded by a four-page preface and one page of calligraphy, and followed by a closing note, eight pages of advertisements, and a colophon. In the original blue covers patterned with waves of mica, with a title label to the upper cover. Overall light soiling and wear to covers, with minor worming to inside covers and last two leaves; red stamp to lower right and small loss to fore-edge of front cover; unobtrusive ink inscription to inside front cover; re-sewn with new thread and housed in new chitsu. A beautiful book by an under-appreciated artist. (Ryerson, p. 388; Brown, p. 105; Mitchell, pp. 360-361, Example A; Franklin, pp. 75 & 79).

A Letter on the Government of the Cape of Good Hope,

1827 - and on certain events which have occured there of late years, under the administration of Lord Charles Somerset. First edition. 8vo. Modern half morocco. 147pp. London, Carpenter and Son, ?The pamphlet throws considerable light on the disputes arising out of the settlement at Albany, and strongly criticises Lord Charles Somerset's methods of government, and mismanagement of the revenues of the Cape Colony? (Mendelssohn). This work forms part of the feud between Donkin and Somerset. Lord Charles Somerset left Cape Town in January 1820 and Donkin was appointed Acting Governor in his absence. During this period, he reversed Somerset's frontier policy and quarrelled with his predecessor, Captain Henry Somerset. However when Somerset returned he was incensed by what he found and Donkin returned to England in 1821, where he set about publicising his feelings on the Cape's government. Mendelssohn, pp477-8.         Autograph letter signed ("H. Beyle").

[Paris], "a Mercredi matin [21 March 1827]. - 8vo. 4 pp. on bifolium. Important letter in French, to Sophie Duvaucel, about Manzoni's "Promessi Sposi" ("The Betrothed"). Stendhal is to receive the third volume of the novel from General La Fayette: "There is a problem, it does not exist, or at least M. Manzoni only published the first half of this third volume. He thinks his novel is boring and it is said that he will not finish it. [ ] Mr. Ugoni from Brescia is the man in Paris who could most probably purchase the first half of the third volume for you. Mr. Fauriel, the only scholar in Paris who is not pedadantic, the old friend of Mme de Condorcet, is a close friend of Mr. Mazoni and has 'Gli Sposi' translated for a Mr. Trognon. This Mr. Trognon is the brother of the tutor of Monseigneur the Count of Beaujoulais or the Prince of Joinville, or it is the tutor himself. The princes live at the royal palace. Mr. Fauriel visits Mlle Clarke, where Mme Alexander could speak to him [ ]" (transl.). Though Stendhal made references to Manzoni's novel in Rome, Naples and Florence, its success probably displeased him. In his "Mélanges de littérature", Stendhal characterizes Manzoni as "excessively devout" and writes that "The Betrothed" are "overly praised", although he recognizes the book shows the existence of "Bravi" during the Spanish Government. - Sophie Duvaucel (1789-1867), daughter-in-law of Georges Cuvier, was one of the most endearing figures of the group of the "Jardin des Plantes". She assisted the naturalist in his works.

A Voyage towards the South Pole, performed in the years 1822-24. Containing an examination of the Antarctic Sea, to the seventy-fourth degree of latitude: and a visit to Tierra del Fuego, with a particular account of the inhabitants. To which is added, much useful information on the coasting navigation of Cape Horn, and the adjacent lands. With charts of harbours, &c.

London Longman 1827 - First edition. 8vo., pp. iv, 276, hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece (offsetting from title), 4 engraved plates, 9 maps and charts, 7 folding (hemisphere maps with captions cropped at top as often), 2 folding lithographic panoramas and errata slip, occasional light foxing and offsetting, contemporary diced calf, red and black morocco labels, neat repairs to joints, an excellent example. Weddell (1787-1834), a Royal Navy officer, following the Napoleonic Wars found himself in need of an income. To this end he went on three sealing expeditions between 18221 and 1824The first of these was to the South Shetlands; the second to the South Orkneys; and the third, in 1823, to a new "Farthest South", exceeding Cook's 1774 record by almost three degrees. "With the immense benefit of benign weather, Weddell managed to sail further south than any man before him, and was rewarded by his discovery of the entire Weddell Sea. Even when sail ships were replaced by steam ships, and wooden hulls by metallic ice-cutters, his explorations were difficult to duplicate. It will be argued by many enthusiasts that the first edition is the true starting point for an Antarctic collection" (Taurus). Taurus 5; Rosove 345.A1; Books on Ice 6.1; Conrad p31; Spence 1248.
