        A Discourse Delivered in Charleston, (S.C) on the 21st of Nov. 1827, Before the Reformed Society of Israelites, for Promoting True Principles of Judaism According to its Purity and Spirit, on their Third Anniversary

      Charleston: James S. Burges, 1827. First and only edition. 18, [2] blank pp. 12mo. Modern wrappers. Custom chemise and quarter morocco slipcase. Some pale foxing to title, otherwise clean. First and only edition. 18, [2] blank pp. 12mo. A rare pamphlet from the the first Jewish Reform movement in the United States--the Reformed Society of Israelites in Charleston, South Carolina-recording an address by one of the movement's leaders and a patriarch of an important southern African-American family. The Sephardic Reformed Society of Israelites formed in 1824 when it split off from the Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE) synagogue in Charleston. The Society sought to implement a number of reforms it deemed crucial to engaging the rising generation, and in the process posited a distinctly American form of practice. As described in an 1826 circular published within the Charleston Mercury, the Society's principal aims were: "First: To introduce such a change in the mode of worship, that a considerable portion of the prayers be said in the English language ... Secondly: To discontinue the observance of such ceremonies as ... owe their origin only to Rabbinical institutions ... Thirdly: To abolish the use of such portions of the Hebrew prayers as are superfluous and consist of mere repetitions ... Fourthly: To follow the portions of the Pentateuch which are to be said in the original Hebrew, with an English Discourse, in which the principles of the Jewish faith, and the force and beauty of the moral law, may be expounded to the rising generation...." These and other reforms-including the use of music during services-created a considerable rift within the Jewish community in Charleston, splitting many families along generational lines. Ultimately the stresses proved to be too much for the Society to withstand, and it ceased to be active by the mid-1830s. Its impact, however, was significant: "its mother congregation KKBE--which most of the Society's members joined again---adopted key elements of Reform in the 1830s and 1840s. By 1852, the congregation used both Hebrew and English in prayers; also added were a choir and an organ ... The Torah was read in a three-year cycle, and only one day of the New Year was celebrated. All of these were Reform elements" (Hieke, "A Discussion of the 'German' Dimension of Reform Judaism in ... Three American Southern States", in Nexus: Essays in German Jewish studies, vol 2, p 67). The present address was delivered on the third anniversary of the Society by Isaac Cardozo (1786-1855), who served as Vice-President of the group from 1828-1832. Cardozo invokes "spirit of reform in all existing institutions [which] is abroad" and reminds the group of its origin as "a society that was instituted mainly for effecting the observance of order and decorum in Hebrew worship: for adapting it to the feelings and propensities of the enlightened Israelite of the present day; and for endeavouring to bring about by argument and petition, what neither necessity nor persuasion could before accomplish," before he goes on to defend the mission from various criticisms. Apart from being a leader within Charleston's Sephardic Jewish community, Cardozo was also the patriarch of an important southern African-American family. He had six children with his common-law wife Lydia Weston, a free black woman from a prominent Charleston family--one of a number of openly mixed-race households in antebellum Charleston. One of their sons, Francis Cardozo (1836-1903), became the first African-American to hold a state-wide office in the United States, serving as Secretary of State in South Carolina from 1868 to 1872 Another son, Thomas, served as State Superintendent of Education from 1873 to 1876. RARE: OCLC reports only two instiutional copies, and A.S.W. Rosenbach, in his American Jewish Bibliography, located only one copy, in a private collection.         Flore pittoresque et médicale des Antilles, ou histoire naturelle des plantes usuelles des colonies Françaises, Anglaises, Espagnoles et Portugaises; Peinte d'après les dessins faits sur les lieux par M. J. Th. Descourtilz.

      - Paris, Privately published by Descourtilz (1827-1829, 1833). In eight volumes. 8vo (20.2 x 12.8 cm). Half-titles, title pages, 2810 pp., 600 hand-coloured engraved plates. Beautiful contemporary style uniform black grained half calf with gilt ornaments and titles on spines.l The botanical magnum opus of Michel Etienne Descourtilz (1775-1835), who was a medical doctor and botanist from France. He travelled widely in the Caribbean and northern South America. In his "Voyage d'un naturaliste et ses observations faites sur les trois règnes de la nature" (1809), he collected many of his observations made in Cuba, Haiti, and Santo Domingo where he observed a slave uprising, was shortly imprisoned and subsequently joined Toussaint Louverture's army as a doctor. In his "Flore pittoresque" he accurately described many new and rare plants and added important notes on their chemistry and medical properties. The illustrator, Jean-Théodore Descourtilz, was one of the eight sons of Michel Etienne. He not only supplied the illustrations to the "Flore pittoresque", but also illustrated his own works on natural history - for instance, his "Oiseaux brillans de Brésil" (1834). All volumes with the small, inoffensive stamp of E. A. Del Camino on title pages, otherwise clean and bright, the colouring vivid. Some plates are a bit undulating. Volume 1 is from the second (1833) printing; volume 2 is not dated and may be either the first or second printing (identical to the first). Most sets offered are mixed. Old, private owner's stamp on titles. A few spots, a few plates with some offsetting, but generally clean. A very good, complete set.         Illustrations of British entomology; or a synopsis of indigenous insects: containing their generic and specific distinctions; with an account of their metamorphoses, times of appearance, localities, food, and economy, as far as practicable. Embellished with coloured figures of the rarer and more interesting species. [ENRICHED WITH] Donovan, E. "The natural history of British insects".

      London, Baldwin, Cradock [and Joy], Henry G. Bohn, 1827-1846. In 12 volumes. Large 8vo (23.8 x 15.0 cm). Text and 691 handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf and later green cloth with printed labels over marbled boards. Marbled edges. l A complete set of James Francis Stephens' magnum opus, including the often missing supplementary volume which was published 11 years later. As Stephens chose to illustrate only the "rarer and more interesting species", a former owner decided to add what might be called "the others" from the famous work on British insects (published between 1792 and 1813) by Edward Donovan, including the plate descriptions to the latter work. At the same time, many irregularities and inconsistencies in Donovan's work were corrected. Those species deemed to be rare or interesting by Stephens, are included as well, thus incorporating the whole Donovan, with 576 plates (one double, not counted) into the Stephens, with 95 plates. A direct comparison doubtlessly shows the text by Stephens to be scientifically superior to Donovan's. In turn, the latter's more artistic - yet quite accurate - illustrations are definitely more pleasing than Stephens precise but otherwise unpretentious drawings. Contemporary handwritten indexes at the end of each volume tightly combine both early 19th century works into one “Gesammtarbeit” of an at that time unsurpassed beauty and entomological completeness and correctness. In the end of the last volume, another twenty handcoloured plates and accompanying text from John Curtis's "British entomology" (1828: plates 215-234, which show insects and their host plants) are included; some with descriptions of new species not recorded by Stephens. All the text and plates are in very good condition; near spotless. A very good item. Nissen ZBI, 3994 (Stephens), 1142 (Donovan), 1000 (Curtis); Horn-Schenkling, 21375 (Stephens), 4949 (Donovan), 4184 (Curtis).

        A system of general ornithology, with coloured figures of all birds. By captain Thomas Brown, fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and of the Linnean Society; member of the Wernerian Natural History Society; and of the Kirwanian of Dublin, and phrenological societies, &c. &c. &c. No I. [All published].

      Edinburgh, Oliver and Boyd, and London, John Murray, 1827. Folio (38.5 x 28.0 cm), Six hand-coloured lithographed plates in original printed wrappers.l The only edition of what is probably one of the rarest ornithological publications ever. It is neither mentioned by Anker, Nissen (VBI, ZBI), and Zimmer, nor in the cat. BM(NH). Bradley-Martin did not have it. The Scottish author, naturalist, ornithologist and malacologist "Captain" Thomas Brown (1785-1865) wrote several books on birds, but this must have been his first. And the reason why it was never continued, or even gained recognition, is a great mystery. The publishers were great names in the field of natural history books, and the work oozes quality; the plates are of a stunning beauty, and show the colourful genera Merops (bee-eaters), Picus (woodpeckers), Trochilus (hummingbirds), Alcedo (kingfishers), Strix nyctea (the snow owl), and Mycteria australis (Australian black-necked stork). The paper is strong, as are the impressions, and the colouring is superb. The inclusion, in this first published part, of the most colourful, impressive and little known birds seems intentional. Perhaps the asking price of 12S 6D was a bit too high. Provenance: once owned by Henry Rogers Broughton, second Baron Fairhaven (1900-1973). Wrappers a bit frayed, otherwise fine. A near mint copy. Not recorded by any ornithology or natural history compiler. Only one single copy located on WorldCat, in the Bangor Univeristy, U.K.

Dorfmüller-Weinhold p. 233. Hoboken 2, 515. Hirsch IV, 402. This, the third of the quartets dedicated to Prince Galitzin, was composed in 1825. "It is hard to resist the conviction, dangerous as superlatives must always be, that as a masterpiece of the sonata type of construction, the opening movement of this last and most mature of the Galitzin Quartets is unrivalled and unique, not only in Beethoven but possibly in all quartet literature." Mason: The Quartets of Beethoven, p. 208. "The event that was personally important to Beethoven at this time was the first performance of his Quartet in B-flat, his "Leibquartett" as it [was] once called in the Conversation Books... The performance took place on March 21, 1826... [Matthias Artaria] had purchased the publishing rights of the Quartett and after the performance he went to Beethoven with the suggestion that he write a new finale and that the fugue be published as an independent piece... Beethoven complied, and the original finale was subsequently published as Op. 133." Thayer-Forbes: Beethoven, pp. 974-975.

Prima rappresentazione: Milano, Teatro alla Scala, 26 dicembre 1819. La tragedia di Antoine Vincent Arnault Blanche et Montcassin (1798) costituì la base per il lavoro di Felice Romani, che già aveva collaborato con Rossini per Il Turco in Italia. È interessante notare come Romani, non si sa bene se per ragioni di censura governativa austriaca o per esigenze di natura squisitamente artistico-virtuosistica, quali il voler concedere alla primadonna di brillare nello splendido finale “Teco io resto: in te rispetto”, preferì sostituire il finale lieto a quello tragico, senz’altro più teatrale; si trattava infatti dell’inserimento, abbastanza usuale per l’epoca, del fantasioso e pirotecnico rondò di Elena, che aveva permesso a Isabella Colbran di infiammare il San Carlo nel finale della Donna del lago [ ] Accolta alla Scala con buon successo di pubblico, l’opera fu replicata per ben trentanove recite consecutive, anche se parte della critica accusò Rossini di eccessivi abbellimenti nella scrittura vocale; fu poi presentata anche all’estero, pur se deturpata da numerosi tagli e inserimenti di pezzi estranei. Indubbiamente ricca di situazioni librettistiche già all’epoca abbastanza inflazionate, presenta innegabili motivi d’interesse nelle raffinate linee vocali e nell’elegante orchestrazione [Dizionario dell'Opera Baldini&Castoldi].         The Italian Confectioner;

      London: William H. Ainsworth, , 1827. Or the complete economy of desserts containing the elements of the art, according to the most modern and approved practice. Octavo. Original green paper boards, rebacked, title label to spine, new endpapers. 2 engraved fold out plates. Rubbing and some loss to corners, chip to board at front fore-edge, occasional spotting. A very good copy. First revised edition, corrected and expanded, third edition overall. Originally published in 1820. "The book sits within an English tradition of publishing recipes for food and confectionery, but it reveals more about the techniques involved, and about the character of the author, than was usual in the genre. Written when confectionery production was on the point of being industrialised through the activities of such contemporaries as Joseph Terry of York, it represented the high point of artisan skills in the craft, which Jarrin believed could not be improved upon. He devoted several chapters to his speciality of making ornaments for the dessert table using various edible and non-edible materials. Other chapters covered more standard ground including recipes for small confections, preserving fruit, and making ices, but with details which throw light on both his own skills and continental practice. He provided instructions on modelling and wood carving (one wooden confectionery mould signed by him has come to light), and evidently possessed artistic talents, for he signed the two engraved plates illustrating confectionery equipment. Proud of his ingenuity as an inventor, Jarrin described inventions and improvements he had devised for making confectionery. The Italian Confectioner was reprinted at least ten times (the last in 1861, after his death), and was updated with new material on several occasions. Earlier editions incorporated small but often telling additions: for example, observations on managing ice-wells and the introduction of new instruments such as the saccharometer" (ODNB).
