South and John Herschel jointly produced a catalogue of 380 double stars in 1824, reobserving many of the double stars that had been discovered by William Herschel. South then continued and observed another 458 double stars over the following year and it is this massive catalogue that is here presented. He won the Copley Medal in 1826 and the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in that same year. He was knighted in 1831. Craters on Mars and the Moon are named in his honour. Starting around 1826, James South made plans for a new, larger telescope, an equatorially mounted achromatic refractor (a telescope with a lens) in a new observatory. He bought a 12-inch aperture lens from Cauchoix in Paris for about £1000, large enough to be the biggest achromatic object lens in the world at the time.

4°. XI S., 260 S. Mit 2 (1 gefalteten) Karten, 1 gefalteten Aquatinta-Ansicht als Frontispiz, 11 Aquatinta-Tafeln und 1 Holzstich-Tafel. Marmorierter Kalblederband der Zeit mit rotem goldgeprägtem Rückenschild, Deckelfiletierung mit Blättermotiven, Rücken- und Stehkantenvergoldung. Borba de Moraes I:139. - Sabin 100816. - Hill 231. - Erste Ausgabe. - First edition. Account of an expedition compiled by Maria Graham, later called Maria Callcott, from Byron's logbooks, the chaplain Rowland Bloxham's descriptions and the scientific documents of Andrew Bloxham. The reason of this expedition was the tragic deaths of the Hawaiian King Kamehameha II and of his wife Kamamal, who fell ill with mumps during an official stay in London and died shortly after. At the behest of the English government, the remains of both were to be taken back to Hawaii. At the same time, the government commissioned a scientific report of the archipelago James Cook called Sandwich Islands and which had little been described since James Cook's discovery and death in 1779. Maria Graham, an already well-known writer of travels, was mandated by John Murray. Maria Graham wrote a short history of the Hawaiian Islands, described the tragic event in London and depicted, in the most important part of her book, the different islands, their population as well as their geological and vulcanologic particularities. The fold out frontispiece shows the crater of the great volcano of Peli, and the plates show different places in Hawaii. Title-page with effaced stamp. Immaculate copy with large margins with nice contemporary binding. [7 Warenabbildungen bei]

Cases illustrative of the remedial effects of acupuncturation

Philadelphia, 1826. One of the First American Scientific Efforts to Alleviate Pain: the First American Study of Acupuncture, Together with First English Translation of Ten Rhyne's "De acupunctura"(1) Bache, Franklin (1792-1864). Cases illustrative of the remedial effects of acupucturation. In North American Medical and Surgical Journal 1 (1826): 311-321. (2) [Ten Rhyne, Wilhelm (1648-1700).] Wilhelmi Ten Rhyne M.D. Transisalano. . . In ibid.: 198-204. (3) Hewson, Thomas. Case of ecthyma cachecticum, with observations. In ibid.: 89-94; 2 hand-colored plates. Whole volume, 8vo. viii, [2], 495, [3, incl. adverts.]pp. 3 plates. 212 x 133 mm. 19th century half calf, marbled boards, leather spine label. Minor foxing and toning, but very good. From the Svenska Läkaresällskapets Bibliotek, with the library's 19th century stamp on the title and front cover and library label inside front cover.(1) First Edition of the first original study of acupuncture published in North America, and one of the earliest American publications on the alleviation of pain. Franklin Bache, great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin, was the first American to perform original research on acupuncture. In 1825 Bache had issued his translation of J. Morand's Mémoire sur l'acupuncture (1825) under the title Memoir on Acupuncturation; this was the first book on acupuncture to be published in America (see Garrison-Morton 6374.15). The same year, Bache conducted his own experimental study of acupuncture, which he recorded in the present paper."As assistant physician at the state penitentiary in Philadelphia, Bache determined in 1825 to test acupuncture on the prisoners whom he was called upon to serve. With the aid of a colleague, he used the needles to treat 12 different prisoners who were suffering from highly painful afflictions: three with muscular rheumatism, four with 'chronic pains,' three with neuralgia, and two with ophthalmia. He also used acupuncture among the prisoners in relieving several lesser pains, including a headache accompanying bilious fever, the head pain of an epileptic, an elastic tumor near the elbow joint, and a dull pain caused by pulmonic inflammation."Bache reported varying successes. In summarizing 17 subsequent cases, some of which were not among the prisoners, he noted that seven "were completely cured, seven considerably relieved, and in the remaining three cases, the remedy produced no effect." "Over all, Bache was convinced that the measure offered great promise for "removing and mitigating pain." He concluded that it could well be 'a proper remedy in almost all diseases, whose prominent symptom is pain'" (Cassedy, pp. 894-895).Bache was one of the very few American physicians in the early nineteenth century to adopt acupuncture as a method of pain relief, despite the fact that the practice was enjoying a considerable vogue in Europe at the time. This volume of the North American Medical and Surgical Journal includes several brief abstracts from European journals on the uses of acupuncture; see pp. 225-227 and 448-449.(2) First English Translation of Ten Rhyne's aphorisms on acupuncture, originally included in his Dissertatio de arthritide (1683; see Garrison-Morton 6374.10). Ten Rhyne's "De acupuntura" represents the first detailed description of acupuncture published in the West. The anonymous translators added a brief historical introduction and a copy of Ten Rhyne's illustration of an acupuncture needle and hammer.(3) Hewson's article on ecthyma (a skin infection similar to impetigo) is remarkable for its hand-colored plates, which are among the earliest to appear in an American medical periodical. Volume 1 of the North American Medical and Surgical Journal is very rare on the market. This is the first copy we have handled in 40 years of trading. Nor have we ever heard of an offprint of Bache's paper. Cassedy, "Early uses of acupuncture in the United States, with an addendum (1826) by Franklin Bache, M.D.," Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine 50 (1974): 892-906. The Reports of Sir Edward Coke, Knt. In Thirteen Parts. A New

2011. Coke, Sir Edward. The Reports of Sir Edward Coke, Knt. In Thirteen Parts. A New Edition, with Additional Notes and References, and with Abstracts of the Principal Points: The First Three Parts and the Fourth to Fol. 38a. by John Henry Thomas, Esq. The Rest of the Fourth and the Remaining Nine Parts by John Farquhar Fraser, Esq. Originally published: London: Joseph Butterworth and Son, 1826. 6 Vols. xxi, xxxiii, [iv], 669; xlvii, 578, 391-394; lxxviii, 414; xvi, 484; xliv, 512; xvi, 495 pp. With a new introduction by Steve Sheppard, William Enfield Professor of Law, University of Arkansas School of Law. Reprinted 2002, 2011 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584772392; ISBN-10: 1584772395. Hardcover. New. * "The best and last [edition], which has superseded all older ones, is in English; the whole thirteen Parts in 6 vols. 8vo. London, 1826." Wallace 194-195. This edition is also noteworthy for the inclusion of Coke's complete prefaces. Sir Edward Coke [1552-1643] was considered to be the greatest legal practitioner of his day. Written between 1572 and 1616, The Reports are not reports in the conventional sense but highly detailed anthologies of precedents organized according to the cases they consider. In each instance Coke assembled a large body of cases, outlined their arguments, and explained the reasons for the judgment, using it as a basis for a statement of general principles. They are, in effect, a series of treatises on the points of law adjudged, and not merely notes for citation. Taken together, The Reports form the most extensive and detailed treatment of Common Law pleading that had yet appeared. A work of immense authority, it was often cited as The Reports, there being no need to mention the author's name. His accounts, especially of pleadings, were applauded for both their clarity and usefulness as stylistic models for students. And his selection of cases, cited frequently in subsequent years, has served as the starting point for numerous decisions. He also attracted some powerful enemies, however, principally James I, who was angered by some of his opinions concerning royal prerogative. Coke's refusal to retract them and apologize to the King cost him his seat on the Bench. See Marvi

Malton: Printed by R. Smitherson ... in Yorkersgate, 1826. . 8vo in 4s, (222x140mm), [10],646p. 2 wood-engravings in the text (attributed by Hugo to Thomas Bewick). A handsome, untrimmed and partly unopened copy with some very slight spotting; a later engraving of Hunmanby Church laid down on the verso of the front free endleaf. Bound in 20th century canvas retaining the earlier leather lettering piece on the backstrip and the earlier marbled paper endleaves. A pencilled note on the front free verso states 'Original boards, recovered.' (Sadleir 63) Extremely rare. 'Wrangham was not a rich man. Yet he contrived to indulge his passion for books, to secure what he wanted, and to revel in its possession. This he did by going after his own taste, and only following the taste of the day when it happened to coincide with his own. The result was that he rescued hundreds of interesting books from oblivion - many at very low cost - and, by studying and cataloguing them, registered their interest for always. No greater service than this can be rendered by a collector to his age and to posterity ... Wrangham's collecting-methods may have seemed trivial and whimsical at the time, but the spirit of the future was in him.' (Michael Sadleir, Archdeacon Francis Wrangham p49) The catalogue is more than a mere listing of his collection. It is extensively annotated by him with what are often quite lengthy comments on the contents of his books, their value as works of scholarship, and other points of interest to, and opinions of, Wrangham. It is indeed an insight into the man, the breadth of his learning, and his opinions.

On a Method of Expressing by Signs the Action of Machinery.London: W. Nicol, 1826. First edition.

The very rare pre-publication offprint issue of "Babbage's first publication of his system of mechanical notation that enabled him to describe the logic and operation of his machines on paper as they would be fabricated in metal." (Norman).

"Babbage later stated that 'Without the aid of this language I could not have invented the Analytical Engine; nor do I believe that any machinery of equal complexity can ever be contrived without the assistance of that or some other equivalent language. The Difference Engine No. 2 ... is entirely described by its aid' (Babbage, Passages from the Life of a Philosopher, p.104)

"Babbage considered his mechanical notation system to be one of his finest inventions, and thought it should be widely implemented. It was a source of frustration to him that no other machine designer adopted it (probably because no other engineer during Babbage's time attempted to build machines as logically and mechanically complex as Babbage's). More than one hundred years later, in the 1930s, when developments in logic were applied to switching systems in the earliest efforts to develop electromechanical calculators, Claude Shannon demonstrated that Boolean algebra could be applied to the same types of problems for which Babbage had designed his mechanical notation system." (Norman).

"While making designs for the Difference Engine, Babbage found great difficulty in ascertaining from ordinary drawings - plans and elevations - the state of rest or motion of individual parts as computation proceeded: that is to say the following in detail succeeding stages of a machine's action. This led him to develop a mechanical notation which provided a systematic method for labeling parts of a machine, classifying each part as fixed or moveable; a formal method for indicating the relative motions of the several parts which was easy to follow; and means for relating notations and drawings so that they might illustrate and explain each other. As the calculating engines developed the notation became a powerful but complex formal tool. Although its scope was much wider than logical systems, the mechanical notation was the most powerful formal method for describing switching systems until Boolean algebra was applied to the problem in the middle of the twentieth century. In its mature form the mechanical notation was to comprise three main components; a systematic method for preparing and labeling complex mechanical drawings; timing diagrams; and logic diagrams, which show the general flow of control." (Hyman).

Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace, no. 37 (ordinary journal issue, i.e., not the offprint as here); Hyman, Charles Babbage: Pioneer of the Computer, p.58.. Offprint from: Philosophical Transactions, vol. 116, pt. 3, 1826, pp. 250-65.

1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. FIRST EDITION of the experimental proof of Ohm's law, "the fundamental law of electric circuits" (Dibner 63). Ohm "made a study of the laws of galvanic currents, and while investigating the relative conductivity of metals finally discovered the relation known as 'Ohm's law,' which underlies all electrical theory and measurement. The experimental proof of this law was first published in a paper in Schweigger's Journal fur Chemie und Physik, vol. xlvi. (1826), under the title of Bestimmung des Gesetzes, nach welchem Metalle die Contactelektricität leiten" (Peck and Colby, The New International Encyclopedia)."The following year Ohm published a book, entitled Die Galvanische Kette, mathematisch bearbeitet (Berlin, 1827). It contained a theoretic deduction of Ohm's law, and became far more widely known than his article of 1826, giving the experimental deduction. In fact, his experimental paper was so little known that the impression long prevailed and still exists that he based his law on theory and never established it empirically. This misapprehension accounts, perhaps, for the unfavourable reception of Ohm's conclusions" (Cajori, A History of Physics). In: Journal für Chemie und Physik. Hrsg. v. J. S. C. Schweigger u. W. Schweigger-Seidel, vol. 46, pp. 137-166. Halle: 1826. The whole volume offered. Octavo, modern cloth. Some dampstaining throughout; occasional browning. Provenance: with library and de-accession stamps on series title from the prestigious Gmelin Institute (after 1996, part of the Max Planck Institute).

        Valda skrifter.

Samlade och å nyo utgifna af P. A. Sondén. Sthlm, H. A. Nordström, 1826. 8:o. (8),111,(1) s. Häftad i samtida ngt nött gråpappomslag med handskriven ryggtitel. Oskuren.

Letter addressed to Mrs. [Elizabeth] Fry signed by William Edward Parry

London: Sir William Edward PARRY, 1826. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good+. Autograph Letter signed, dated Admiralty, May 18th, 1826, addressed to Mrs. [Elizabeth] Fry, Newgate. 21 lines, 1 p., with conjugate address leaf, approx. 5x7 inches, hinged on the left with linen onto a larger album page, very good condition. Letter of introduction: My dear friend, Permit me to have the pleasure of introducing to you the Miss Waldegraves, sisters of Lord Radstock, very pious amiable people, and very desirous of your personal acquaintance. The tickets which I deputed to Bichenda to ask you for were for these ladies, than whom I can assure you, few individuals will more rightly appreciate the privilege you have thus given them. I am my dear friend, with truest esteem, very sincerely yours, W. Parry.", The Misses Waldegrave referred to by Parry in this letter were the sisters of George Granville Waldegrave, Second Baron Radstock, 1786- 1857, a British Naval Officer and Vice-Admiral in 1851. The recipient of the letter was almost certainly Elizabeth Fry, 1780- 1845, the famous British prison reformer, who had in 1817 formed an association for the improvement of female prisoners in Newgate, and later instituted an order of nursing sisters. The original Elizabeth Fry Society of Canada was founded in 1939 by Member of Parliament Agnes MacPhail Sir William Edward Parry [1790 - 1855] was an English rear-admiral and Arctic explorer, who in 1827 attempted one of the earliest expeditions to the North Pole. He reached 82°45 North latitude, setting the record for human exploration farthest North that stood for nearly five decades before being surpassed at 83°20 26 by Albert Hastings Markham in 1875-1876.

        Oeuvres choisies

Paris ; Bruxelles.: Roux-Dufort ; Auguste Wahlen, 1826. relié. 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in 8 (12,5x20,5cm). - Roux-Dufort ; Auguste Wahlen, Paris ; Bruxelles. _1826, 2 tomes en 2 Vol. in 8 (12,5x20,5cm), relié. - relié
