Monument élevé à la mémoire de la Pérouse

Paris 1826 - Lithograph, 190 x 280 mm.; very good, mounted. The Sydney La Perouse monument. A fine view of the La Pérouse monument, built in Sydney to honour the great French explorer during the visit of the Thétis under Hyacinthe de Bougainville in 1825. The building of the monument showed a suitable piety from the French explorers nearly forty years after La Pérouse's disappearance, and especially from Hyacinthe de Bougainville himself, heir to a great French naval tradition as the grandson of Louis de Bougainville, the first French circumnavigator. Edmond de la Touanne, who prepared this fine lithograph view of the monument, was a friend and protégé of Bougainville and sailed on the expedition as lieutenant de vaisseau. Because of the haste with which the expedition was manned, no official artist was sent; as Bougainville remarks, no pictorial record of the expedition would have survived but for de la Touanne's sketches, which were published as lithographs in the official record of the expedition and in de la Touanne's own album. La Pérouse had sailed towards Australia at the beginning of 1788; his expedition had been at sea exploring the central Pacific, but his main instructions were to make for Australian waters to check on English activity in the region. Australia was a prize, and the French were as keen as the English to claim it. On 24 January they reached Botany Bay to find the ships of the First Fleet at anchor in the harbour. The French ships spent over six weeks in Botany Bay, and thus witnessed the English move to Port Jackson and the beginnings of the fledgling settlement there. In fact the last white people to see the French expedition before it vanished in the Pacific were the first Australian settlers. France lost its most important explorer of the eighteenth century, and the nation mourned this loss for over forty years.

Scenery of the Rhine, Belgium and Holland from Drawings by Captain Batty of the Grenadier Guards, F.R.S

London: Robert Jennings,, 1826. Quarto (269 × 180 mm). Contemporary dark green half straight-grain morocco on drab boards, title gilt direct, low bands with double gilt fillet, attractive floral lozenge to the compartments, single gilt rule to spine and corner edges, top edge gilt, drab endpapers. High quality steel-engraved title page with vignette view, and 61 similar plates, town crests to text, original tissue-guards, half-title bound in. Text in English and French. A little rubbed, some foxing and browning throughout, occasional off-setting from the plates, minor hygroscopic damping at the head of the gutter, quite heavy in the last plate, but remains very good, and attractive. First edition. Attractive series of views on the Rhine, Maine and Neckar, and on a tour through the Low Countries. Batty served with his regiment in the latter stages of the Peninsular War - blockade of Bayonne - and in Wellington's campaign in the Netherlands - Quatre Bras, and at Waterloo, La Haye Sainte and the advance on the Imperial Guard - subsequently he was in Paris during the occupation. He seems to have spent little time with the Guards after their return from France, and as "a talented amateur artist" (Bryan) produced a series of illustrated topographical books, he also illustrated his father-in-law John Barrow's A Family Tour through South Holland, up the Rhine and across the Netherlands (1831), which tour was likely the source for the drawings for these plates. Attractive circular presentation label to the front pastedown recording the gift of the book to Augusta Thornton from Mrs. Eliza Ford of Clifton in 1848.

The English Portion of the Library of the Ven. Francis Wrangham, M.A. F.R.S. Archdeacon of Cleveland

1826. Malton, printed by R. Smithson, Jun. bookseller and stationer, in Yorkersgate, 1826. x,645pp. Uncut & unopened. Orbds. (rebacked & bds. dustsoiled). (some light foxing throughout). Francis Wrangham (1769-1842) assembled a library that contained over 14000 volumes. An exceptional library because he preferred an obscure book, which for one reason or another was (and must always remain) very hard to find, to a notorious high-spot which - though also of great rarity - could be relied upon to head the bill in any auction or catalogue. He was the sort of bibliophile who loved to choose his own quarry and hunt it; and he measured the value of his library, not by the total of its current prices or by its place in competition with those of his book-collecting contemporaries, but by the number of ingenious discoveries and lucky captures which he himself knew that it contained. This catalogue was printed in 1826 in 70 copies but no fewer than 51 copies were still in folded sheets when Wrangham's library was sold by Mr. Leigh Sotheby in two ten-day sales in July and November-December 1843. The first sale comprised 2,669 lots and the second 3,089. Most descriptions in this catalogue have extensive notes and the preface written by Wranham is on his collection. (cf. M. Sadleir, Archdeacon Francis Wrangham 1769-1842. Oxford Bibl. Soc., 1937).

, 1826. 1826. [in the original boards] A Narrative of 1757. By the Author of "The Spy," "The Pilot," "The Pioneers," &c. &c. In Three Volumes. London: John Miller, 1826. Original drab paper-covered boards with brown paper spines and printed labels. First English Edition, published in three volumes just two months after the two-volume Philadelphia edition. This is the novel for which Cooper is best known today: THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS was the second-published of the five "Leather-Stocking Tales," (the series name derived from the nickname of the hero, Natty Bumppo, so-called because of his long deerskin leggings). The first of the five to be published had been THE PIONEERS, in 1823; however, their sequence in terms of plot is THE DEERSLAYER, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, THE PATHFINDER, THE PIONEERS and THE PRAIRIE. The hero, known by the name "Hawk-eye" in this novel, "is shown as a young man approaching the zenith of his skill as a wilderness hunter and scout during the French and Indian Wars. In this best known novel of the saga, Natty as Hawk-eye develops into the epic hero of American literature." [UVa]~These volumes, remarkably, are still uncut in their original boards-and-label binding (which was meant to be temporary); at some point (apparently long ago) the outer joints were aptly restored, as is typically necessary for such fragile bindings. Otherwise the volumes show only minor edge-wear, and the labels are nearly complete. The first and third volumes are lacking the front free endpaper; the half-title is present only in the second and third volumes, because none was originally provided for the first volume. The leaves are unusually free of foxing for paper approaching its 200th year. At the top of each front cover and on the front paste-down of Vol. I is the signature of [Baron] Charles de Nagell (Peerage # 335169), probably the initial owner. See Blanck 3833 (saying that the American edition came out in January and the English in March, noting their sources); UVa (Barrett) 6 (this English edition is noted but is not listed in detail, though the American and French editions are; UVa says that the English edition came out six months after the American edition, but without noting reasons for that statement); Spiller & Blackburn p. 44.

Corby, Paris, France 1826 - small 8vo. contemporary quarter leather, marbled paper-covered boards, five false raised bands. (iv),xii,528; (iv),529-1127 pages, with one foldout. 2 Volumes. First edition (Bigmore & Wyman, II-201). Licensing, copyright, censorship, the "public order," and so on. The years following the end of the Napoleonic Wars were generally not a good time in Europe for promoting freedom of the press, and printers, booksellers and others undoubtedly had need of such books as this compilation by the jurist F.A. Pic in order to know what they could and couldn't do. In four main parts: Laws prior to 1789, newer laws pertaining to printing and bookselling, newer laws concerning the press and "other means of publication," and the texts of "dispositions législatives" for bookselling, printing and freedom of the press together with selections from legislative reports and discussions relative to the passage of nine specific laws from 1814 to 1822. Since these nine laws dealt largely with freedom of the press (or its suppression), persons interested in censorship in the 19th century will find this interesting. The texts and discussions for laws actually comprise over two-thirds of the book. The foldout is a table on laws relating to export and import of books. Covers rubbed and scuffed, mostly at edges. Light foxing scattered through text. contemporary quarter leather, marbled paper-covered boards, five false raised bands [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Chemie u. Physik 16 (1826): 137-66, plus plate figures 1-2 on plate III. Whole volume, 8vo. xvi, 496pp.2 folding printed charts, 3 folding engraved plates. Halle: In der Expedition des Vereins zur Verbreitung von Naturkenntniss, 1826. 201 x 122 mm. Half sheep c. 1826, a bit rubbed, light wear to corners & edges. Minor foxing, otherwise very good. First Edition. Ohm began publishing his electricity researches in 1825 with his "Vorlaufige Anzeige des Gesetzes, nach welchem Metalle die Contaktelektricitat leiten," a paper in which he sought to find a functional relationship between the decrease in the electromagnetic force exerted by a current-carrying wire and the length of the wire. Although this paper contained some fundamental errors, it was remarkable for its direct foundation on experiment, a characteristic of all Ohm's early papers. In February and April of the following year Ohm published two important papers dealing separately with the two major aspects of his theory of galvanic electricity, which he would later unify in his landmark Die galvanische Kette (1827). The first paper, which we are offering here, "announced a comprehensive law for electric current that brought order into the hitherto confused collection of phenomena pertaining to the closed circuit, including the solution to the problem of conductibility as he and others had conceived of it" (DSB). Ohm's second paper, "Versuch einer Theorie der durch galvanische Krafte hervorgebrachten elektroskopischen Erscheinungen" (Ann. Phys. 6 [1826]: 459-69; 7, 45-54, 117-18), "broke new ground in associating an electric tension with both open and closed galvanic circuits" (DSB), and contained the first statement of Ohm's Law. "Ohm's experimental procedure in ["Bestimmung des Gesetzes"] was analogous to that which he had used earlier but was modified in several significant ways. First, at Poggendorff's suggestion, he now used a thermoelectric pile in order to eliminate the fluctuations in current strength accompanying the voltaic pile, fluctuations that Ohm attributed to changes produced by the current in the distribution (Vertheilung) of the components in the liquid conductor. Second, he sought a direct relationship between the electromagnetic force of the current and the entire length of the connecting wire. . . . "[I]n the paper in question Ohm simply observed that the data from each of his several sets of experiments were very closely represented by the formula X = a/(b + x), where X is the strength of the electromagnetic effect-which he took as a measure of the electric current-of a conductor of length x on the magnetic needle of a Coulomb torsion balance, and where a and b are constants the exact nature of which he proposed to determine from additional series of carefully controlled experiments. The observation that b remained constant for all series of experiments, whereas a varied with temperature, led Ohm to conclude that a depended solely on the electromotive force (erregende Kraft) of the pile and b solely on the resistance (Leitungswiderstand or, more commonly, Widerstandslange) of the remaining portion of the circuit, in particular that of the pile itself. He also observed that the electromotive force of the thermoelectric pile appeared to be exactly proportional to the temperature difference at its end points. . . . " "After reconfirming the validity of his law by further series of experiments, Ohm exhibited its explanatory powers on some of the chief unsolved problems which had occupied scientists working on the pile; and he showed how it also cast light on a number of other previously reported but poorly understood experimental findings. . . . The fruitful application of Ohm's simple l [Attributes: First Edition]

London: Baldwin & Cradock. London: Baldwin & Cradock. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand outline coloring. Image measures 15.5 x 24.5". This fine town plan offers an incredibly detailed look at mid-19th century London. The river Thames snakes along the lower half of the map, and the city's streets and railroads extend out from it. Major roads are colored yellow, water is blue, and parks are rendered in green. Two insets in the upper right below the title offer views of the London Tower from London Bridge and of the city skyline from Copenhagen Fields. Below the map are views of the facades of 25 structures in the city, titled as "A comparison of the principal buildings of London." This plan, a beloved example of S.D.U.K's work, is particularly interesting because London was the home base of the house's prolific production. The map is in good condition with original folds as issued. Narrow margins as is common with these maps. Overall toning but no significant chips or creases. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, or SDUK, was formed in 1826 and published low cost maps with the goal of reaching a large market while still maintaining high quality and precision. This fine map exemplifies its work.
