        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Graz, 15. XI. 1826.. ¾ S. 4to.. Also Guten Muthes und gekaufet [...]".

A fine and handsome copy, internally fresh and clean, plates in fine order with less then typical offsetting, folding map near and with no wear and just a bit of spotting, all very sturdy and solid, binding with restoration and other evidence of age but very handsome and proper. SCARCE AND IMPORTANT WORK. Denham and Clapperton, in the company of Dr. Walter Oudney, traveled from Benioleed, near Tripoli, almost due south to Lake Tchad, with excursions into the mountains west of Mourzuk in Fezzan. Dixon attempted to follow the circuit around Lake Tchad but was unsuccessful. In the meantime, Clapperton and Oudney journeyed west from the lake toward the Niger River, but the doctor only made it about a third of the way and died in Murmur. Clapperton continued west, but was prevented from passing beyond Sackatoo by the local Sultan. He and Denham subsequently returned to Tripoli and crossed back to England<br> This narrative is compiled primarily from Denham&#39;s journal, with a chapter by Dr. Oudney on the excursion to the mountains west of Mourzuk. A final section by Clapperton relates the westward journey from Lake Tchad to Sackatoo and includes an account of Oudney&#39;s death. Among the several appendices are translations from the Arabic of various letters and documents brought back by Denham and Clapperton, including a document relating to the death of Mungo Park; a translation from the Arabic of a geographical and historical account of the Kingdom of Tak-roor, from a larger work composed by Sultan Mohammed Bello of Hausa; vocabularies of Bornou, Begharmi, Mandara, and Timbuctoo; appendices on the zoology and botany of the regions based on samples collected by Dr. Oudney; a note on rock specimens; and a thermometrical journal kept at Kouka in Bornou.<br> The engravings, after drawings by Denham and Clapperton, are superbly engraved by Edward Finden, one of the finest steel-engravers in England at the time.

Narrative of Travels and Discoveries in Northern and central Africa in the Years 1822, 1823, and 1824. Extending across the Great Desert to the Tenth Degree of Northern Latitude, and from Kouka in Bornou, to Sackatoo, the Capital of the Fellatah Empi

John Murray, London 1826 - 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Two volumes in one. lxvii, 335; 269 pp, complete with 38 engraved plates (1 colored) and maps (1 folding), 6 wood-engraved vignettes in the text. Rebound in red buckram with leather spine label, date erroneously printed as 1836 at foot. Occasional minor foxing and offsetting, one closed tear to map.In hopes of tracing the course of the Niger River, Denham's expedition crossed the desert along the long-established Sahara trade route to the kingdom of Bornu (later Nigeria), a route littered with the skeletons of thousands of slaves abandoned there over the centuries. They sighted Lake Chad and reached the capital of Bornu, where they were welcomed by a spectacular array of some five thousand horsemen sent by the Muslim prophet who ruled Bornu in the king's name. Though delighted to meet them, he refused to let them continue their explorations, lest they meet some misadventure for which he would be blamed. Ultimately, the expedition returned to England having failed to find the Niger, but having opened much of north central Africa to European knowledge. Written in a lively style, and embellished with engravings of Denham's own sketches, this account became one of the classics of its genre (DNB). Denham was later appointed lieutenant-governor of the colony of Sierra Leone, where he died of the African fever in 1828. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

An Inquiry into the Origin of the Laws and Political Institutions of.

1826 - A "Learned" Study of the Origins of Modern Anglo-European Law Spence, George [1787-1850]. An Inquiry into the Origin of the Laws and Political Institutions of Modern Europe, Particularly Those of England. London: John Murray, 1826. xxxvi, 600 pp. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"). Recent period-style quarter calf over cloth, gilt fillets and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed, untrimmed edges. Clean tear to fore-edge of a leaf mended with archival tape. Light foxing to a few leaves, interior otherwise fresh. Ex-institutional library. Small inkstamp to title page, another to a text leaf. A handsome copy of an uncommon title. * Only edition. This book is mentioned by Holdsworth, who deems it a "learned book." According to Spence's preface, his work on the translation of the Code Napoleon led him to "look attentively into the civil law of the Romans, where he found that a great proportion of the doctrines of the common law of England, even many of those which are purely artificial, were to be found in the [Corpus Juris Civilis]. This induced him to study the civil and criminal code of the Romans with some minuteness, and to compare the political and judicial institutions of modern Europe, and of our own country in particular, with those of ancient Rome, in order to discover to what extent the former might be traced from the latter, their venerable and classical origins." (v). Spence was an English jurist and barrister of the Inner Temple. He was the author of several books, including a translation of the Code Napoleon and an important treatise on chancery law.         Narrative of travels and discoveries in Northern and Central Africa, in the years 1822, 1823, and 1824 .. extending across the great desert to the tenth degree of Northern latitude, and from Kouka in Bornou, to Sackatoo, the capital of the Fellatah

London: John Murray, 1826 xlviii+335 pages with frontispiece, and 35 plates which include one hand colored and one a fold out map; [2]+269 pages with 8 plates and appendix. Quarto (10 1/2" x 8 3/4") in original leather with gilt vignette to edges. New spine with raised bands and gilt lettering. 1st edition. Hugh Clapperton was born in Annan, Dumfriesshire, where his father was a surgeon. He gained some knowledge of practical mathematics and navigation, and at thirteen was apprenticed on board a vessel which traded between Liverpool and North America. After having made several voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, he was impressed for the navy, in which he soon rose to the rank of midshipman. During the Napoleonic Wars he saw a good deal of active service, and at the storming of Port Louis, Mauritius, in November 1810, he was first in the breach and hauled down the French flag. In 1814 he went to Canada, was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, and to the command of a schooner on the Canadian lakes. In 1817, when the flotilla on the lakes was dismantled, he returned home on half-pay. In 1820 Clapperton removed to Edinburgh, where he made the acquaintance of Walter Oudney, who aroused in him an interest in African travel. Lieutenant G. F. Lyon, having returned from an unsuccessful attempt to reach Bornu from Tripoli, the British government determined on a second expedition to that country. Walter Oudney was appointed by Lord Bathurst, then colonial secretary, to proceed to Bornu as consul and Hugh Clapperton and Dixon Denham were added to the party. From Tripoli, early in 1822, they set out southward to Murzuk, and from this point Clapperton and Oudney visited the Ghat oasis. Kuka, of Bornu, was reached in February 17, 1823, and Lake Chad seen for the first time by Europeans. At Bornu the travellers were well received by the sultan; and after remaining in the country until December 14 they again set out for the purpose of exploring the course of the Niger. At Murmur, on the road to Kano, Oudney died (January 1824). Clapperton continued his journey alone through Kano to Sokoto, the capital of the Fula Empire, where by order of Sultan Bello he was obliged to stop, though the Niger was only five days' journey to the west. Worn out with his travel he returned by way of Zaria and Katsina to Kuka, where he again met Denham. The two travellers then set out, for Tripoli, reached on the January 26, 1825. An account of the travels was published in under the title of Narrative of Travels and Discoveries in Northern and Central Africa in the years 1822 - 1823 and 1824 (1826). Immediately after his return Clapperton was raised to the rank of commander, and sent out with another expedition to Africa, the sultan Bello of Sokoto having professed his eagerness to open up trade with the west coast. Clapperton landed at Badagry in the Bight of Benin, and started overland for the Niger on the December 7 1825, having with him his servant Richard Lemon Lander, Captain Pearce, and Dr. Morrison, navy surgeon and naturalist. Before the month was out Pearce and Morrison were dead of fever. Clapperton continued his journey, and, passing through the Yoruba country, in January 1826 he crossed the Niger at Bussa, the spot where Mungo Park had died twenty years before. In July he arrived at Kano. Thence he went to Sokoto, intending afterwards to go to Bornu. The sultan, however, detained him, and being seized with dysentery he died near Sokoto. Clapperton was the first European to make known from personal observation the Hausa states, which he visited soon after the establishment of the Sokoto Empire by the Fula. In 1829 appeared the Journal of a Second Expedition into the Interior of Africa, &c., by the late Clapperton, to which was prefaced a biographical sketch of the explorer by his uncle, Lieut.-colonel S. Clapperton. Richard Lemon Lander, who had brought back the journal of his master, also published Records of Captain Clapperton's Last Expedition to Africa . . . with the subsequent Adventures of the Author (2 volumes, London, 1830). Description: Stains to cover, some foxing to pages without tissued between plates, repair to fold out map at gutter. Internally a very good copy.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. Quarto.

Voyage autour du monde, exécuté par ordre du Roi, sur la corvette de Sa Majesté, La Coquille, pendant les années 1822, 1823, 1824 et 1825. ZOOLOGIE par Lesson et Garnot.

Paris, A. Bertrand, 1826-1830. 4 text volumes (bound in 2). Large 4to (295 x 225mm) and 1 folio atlas (492 x 315mm), with 157 (2 plain) beautifully colour-printed engraved plates, finished by hand. Contemporary half calf, gilt lettered spines (one text volume recently bound to match, the remaining volumes a bit rubbed) . The complete zoological part of Duperrey's famous circumnavigation with the "Coquille". Louis-Isidore Duperrey (1786-1865) made his first voyage around the world with L. de Freycinet in 1817-1820. Already 2 years later he set sail on the "Coquille" with J.S.C. Dumont d'Urville as second in command. On this long voyage, an impressive array of geological, botanical and zoological specimens were collected, which were housed in the "Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle" after their return in Marseille in 1825. On board the well-known French pharmacist and ornithologist R. Lesson served as naturalist and surgeon. The large collections and exhaustive zoological descriptions (especially regarding the birds) were made by him, together with P. Garnot and F.E. Guérin-Méneville. Of the beautiful 157 plates, 44 depict birds (of which many were new to science), 38 fishes, 9 mammals, 7 reptiles, 16 molluscs, 16 zoophytes, 5 crustaceans, and 22 insects. All are very finely colour-printed (many finished by hand) after drawings by J.G. Prêtre, R.P. Lesson, Bévalet, Prévost, and a few others. /"The aims of the expedition, it will be remembered, had been largely scientific and Duperrey had well carried out his instructions in this respect... The geologists thanked Lesson especially for the 300 samples of rock he had brought back. D'Urville was praised for his botanical work, and the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle received with gratitude 1,200 insects, 450 of which had not been available before, most of them collected by d'Urville. There were in addition 264 birds and quadrupeds, 63 reptiles, and 288 fishes, more than 80 of them new specimens (Dunmore II, pp. 152-153).//The work is usually found with some foxing. In our copy about one third of the plates have been more or less seriously affected. //Fine Bird Books 73; Nissen ZBI, 1210 & IVB, 280; Wood 327; B.M.(N.H.) II, 604.
