Amsterdam, Kalverstraat, Munt - naar Cornelis de Kruyf, 1825.

DE KALVERSTRAAT, HET ELYSIUM VAN ONZE FLANEURS EN ONZE GRISETTES ?Vue D?Amsterdam no 22. Prijs: ?650,-.

American ornithology; or, the natural history of birds inhabiting the United States, not given by Wilson

Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Carey, 1825. FIRST EDITION. With 27 hand-coloured engraved plates, from drawings by Titian Ramsay Peale, A. Rider, and one partially by Audubon (pl. 10). Half-red morocco and marbled boards, decorated in gilt, expertly re-backed and re-cornered; some faint offsetting from plates (mainly to tissue-guards), some browning to Volumes II and III, scattered foxing to last three volumes (heavy at times in vol. III). A beautiful uncut copy with fresh, bright plates, from the library of Gardiner Greene and Esther Lathrop Hammond, with their engraved bookplate. First edition, complete with all four volumes. Over forty-five North American birds are described, with engravings by Alexander Lawson after the original illustrations of Rider and Peale, the appointed naturalist to the Philadelphia Museum who collected for Bonaparte between 1824-25. Lawson, who also provided the plates for Wilson's work, engraved these plates "with the birds always before him," the colours dictated by Rider. The first two volumes are principally devoted to the description of land birds of western and extreme southern territories, drawing on expedition accounts into the Rockies, and introduces at least sixteen new species. The third volume contains both land and water birds, the descriptions based largely on Peale's gleanings in Florida. Of particular interest is the fine description of the indigenous Wild Turkey (meleagris oculata), complete with translations in 26 American Indian languages.Bonaparte (1803-57), Prince of Canino and Musignano and nephew of Napoleon, is notable as both a revolutionary republican politician and a keen ornithologist. He moved from Europe after his marriage, and did his most important studies of avifauna while in Philadelphia, deciding to continue Wilson's monumental work only after he had discerned that nobody else would be willing to undertake such an enormous task. Wilson's Ornithology (9 volumes, 1808-14) was the first American work to use coloured plates to convey scientific information. Following a tumultuous political life in exile while back in Europe, Bonaparte returned to his zoological studies and in 1854 was appointed Director of the Jardin des Plantes of Paris.

Porto, Imprensa do Gandra, 1825. - 4°, contemporary rear marbled wrapper (faded, front wrapper gone). Elaborate woodcut on title page: see below. Second leaf (dedication to D. João VI) is set in elaborate gothic type. Typographical mustaches on p. 5. Text in fine condition. 16 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this oration celebrating D. João VI's acceptance of the title of Emperor of Brazil. D. João VI ruled as prince regent for D. Maria I, 1799-1816, as king of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarve 1816-1822, and king of Portugal and de jure emperor of Brazil, 1822-25. Macedo contrasts the bloody rebellions in Latin America,"desde o Isthmo de Panamá, até ao Cabo de Horne, "with events in Brazil, where D. João's prudence and moderation have tempered events: "A prudente expectativa, e moderação de El-Rei com o Brazil acalma insensivelmente o brutal, e desmoralisado furor, que grassava nas Provincias do Norte." "A ephémera Republica do Equador" is mentioned (pp. 12-16).The elaborate woodcut on the title page shows a castle with two tall towers, between which are the Madonna and Child. At their feet, above an arch, are the words "Civitas Virginis." On the left-hand tower are the imperial arms of Brazil; a mailed arm rises above them, waving a flag with the Brazilian arms. On the right-hand tower are the royal arms of Portugal; a mailed arm rises above them, brandishing a sword twined with laurels.Ignacio José de Macedo (1774-1834), a native of Porto, moved to Brazil at age 8 and lived there for the next 40 years. For many years he was a magistrate in Bahia (examinador synodal and censor regio); he also published a periodical, A Idade de Ouro. According to the title page, he was pregador da Imperial Capella do Carmo in Rio de Janeiro and professor de Filosofia Racional e Moral in Bahia. In 1823, after Bahia proclaimed its independence, Macedo returned to Portugal. There he became well known as the editor of O Velho Liberal do Douro, which supported the new Constitution and liberal principles. In 1829 he was imprisoned. From the Duque de Bragança's return until Macedo's death, he again published O Velho Liberal. He published several funeral orations, including two for D. João VI, and several more general works such as Influencia da religião sobre a politica do Estado, Lisbon, 1826, and Considerações sobre as causas da elevação e decadencia da Monarchia Portugueza, Lisbon, 1834.*** Innocêncio X, 53; on the author, see also III, 209-10. Moraes Rocha de Almeida, Dicionário de autores no Brasil colonial (2010), pp. 317-21. Not in Borba de Moraes (1983); for Macedo's funeral oration on D. João VI, see II, 504. Not in Biblioteca Pública de Braga, Catálogo do Fundo Barca-Oliveira, which cites four other works by the author. Porbase locates two copies, both at Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. It does exist. The twenty or so partial, single page and double page images, a few using color blocks, are quite well printed. The condition overall is very good. Double stars, essentially discovered by William Herschel were of great interest throughout the nineteenth century - new ones being found and postition measurements made more precise with each improvement in telescope construction. South, working with John Herschel during the years 1821-1823, re-observed the double stars charted originally by William Herschel, mainly for the purpose of detecting position changes. Their observations helped verify the newly recognized orbital motion of these neighboring stars. Their resulting catalog of 380 double stars, presented to the Royal Society in 1834, earned them the gold medal of the Astronomical Society and the grand prize of the Institute France.         Wanderings in South America, the North-West of the United States and the Antilles, in the Years 1812, 1816, 1820, and 1824. With Original Instructions for the Perfect Preservation of Birds, &c., for Cabinets of Natural History

London: J. Mawman, 1825. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Original boards; 4to; pp. vii, [1], 326, plus engraved frontispiece. Uncut, with wide margins. Boards rubbed, and scuffed along the edges; joitns scuffed, with mull exposed. Discreet markings (ownership signatures, bookplate) on front endpapers; some light foxing; but overall internally nice and clean. Sabin 102094. The frontispiece shows Waterton's "Nondescript Man," a hirsute creature composed of various features of man and beast. Wateron was an expert in taxidermy, and perhaps a bit eccentric -- rumored to have an entire human being preserved in his home, which nearly caused a local riot. This work provides an early description of tropical plants and animals from personal observation, species hitherto known to a small number of people in academics and museums. Travelling up the Hudson River, Waterton observed that he'd come to the wrong country to looks for "bugs, bears, brutes, and buffalo," but looked upon the Americans nonetheless favorably: Wherever you meet them, they appear to be quite at home. The immense number of highly polished females who go in the stages to visit the different places of amusement, and see the stupendous natural curiosities of this extensive county, incontestably proves that safety and convenience are assured to them, and that the most distant attempt at rudeness would, by common consent, be immediately put down." This, after visiting New York!

D. M. Editio Nova, Recognita, Et Emendata, A Judah D'Allemand." Dr. Thomas Bray was one of the founders of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in 1698 and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in 1701. He was appointed to preside over ministers sent to Maryland, his acceptance being based upon the proposition that parochial libraries be provided for ministers sent overseas. Bray understood that the lack of available books would be a serious hindrance to ministers too poor to build up their own libraries. Dr. Bray provided 16 libraries for Maryland, including Annapolis, the first lending library in America, which consisted of about 1000 volumes and cost £400. He also founded libraries in Carolina, Rhode Island, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, the Bermudas, the Bahamas, etc. Bray himself donated £500 to these American libraries, the other subscriptions received having fallen short of the amount needed. His efforts to obtain subscriptions for these libraries occasionally met with the remark that "Charity begins at home." Recognizing the justice of this criticism, he began a programme for providing libraries for the home clergy with lending libraries formed throughout England. One of his proposals was that booksellers would provide books for foreign libraries free of charge in return for the purchase of books for local lending libraries. Bray proposed also that the lending libraries should be movable and travel abroad. Because of the possibility of loss, the books would be marked according to what Deanery they belonged. In 1701 he published "Several Circular Letters" that said "I do therefore conclude it equally necessary to have in each parish a Collection of plain practical Books, for the use of the Laity that the Defects of publick Teaching may be supplied this way." George Smith wrote in the Library Association Record: "To initiate so large a design would seem to demand a colossal fortune, to require its proposer to be of the highest rank and influence, and to need the assistance of the State; but it was commenced, and to a great extent carried out, not by any of these means, but by the unselfish sacrifice, the inspiring enthusiasm, and the practical common sense of its originator".

A Sketch of the Life, Condemnation, and Death of the Three Thayers...

1825. A Murderous Trio of Brothers in Buffalo, New York [Broadside]. [Execution]. [New York State]. A Sketch of the Life, Condemnation, and Death of the Three Thayers, Who Were Hanged at Buffalo, on the 17th of June, 1825, for the Murder of John Love. [Buffalo, NY; S.n.], 1825. 18" x 11 1/2" broadside. Text in two columns, woodcut illustrations of three caskets. Light browning and foxing, vertical and horizontal fold lines, moderate edgewear, two small holes with negligible loss to text, a few early repairs to verso along fold lines. * Nelson, Israel and Isaac Thayer were brothers. Nelson and Israel, farmers who appear to have been lazy, owed a considerable amount of money to John Love, a wealthy bachelor who boarded with Nelson. Unable to clear their debts, the two older brothers enlisted their younger brother, Isaac, to murder Love. The broadside account concludes: "There is probably a parallel case to this in the history of man. It was truly afflicting to see three young men, brothers, thus brought to an ignominious death for a crime committed to gratify a love for idleness and a lust for money. May all others take warning by their example." OCLC locates 3 copies (New-York Historical Society, American Antiquarian Society, University of Michigan, Clements Library).
