(Howes K20; Wagner- Camp IV: 26b:1; Graff 2280; Pilling 2066; Streeter 1785; Field 949) First British edition.William Hypolitus (or Hippolitus, or Hypolite) Keating was an American geologist. His father, Baron John Keating, of Irish ancestry, had been an officer in the French army in the West Indies and had settled in Wilmington, Delaware. He was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, and then in France and Switzerland, where he studied mining. In 1822, he became Professor of Chemistry and Mineralogy at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the American Philosophical Society. He is perhaps best known for his work on the staff of Stephen Long's expedition to the Great Lakes in 1823, an account of which he published in 1824. In the account he first hypothesized the existence of what is now known as Lake Agassiz. Formed at the end of the last ice age during the retreat of the great North American glaciers Lake Agassiz was, at its peak, much larger than any currently existing lake. The tremendous significance of the discovery has come to be appreciated in recent decades because the draining of Lake Agassiz into the North Atlantic Ocean is now generally thought to have been responsible for sudden periods of cooling of Northern Hemisphere climate at the end of the Pleistocene. The most dramatic of these periods of cooling is known as the Younger Dryas.Condition:Minor tears at map folds, foxing to title and frontispiece, some offset darkening to title else a very good set.

Signed Manuscript Letter Regarding a Plan for Fighting Fire in Boston.

July 2, 1825., Sag Harbor, Long Island, NY: - Letter sheets (8" x 12") 3 pages plus integral address leaf. Extensive tape repairs to folds, mostly archival tape, but some regular tape too, which has caused a little browning in areas, long tear obscures writers signature, but partially visible, creased, normal aging and browning, remnant of wax seal; otherwise good or better. The letter is to Boston Mayor Josiah Quincy (1772-1864), a future head of Harvard and served eight years in Congress. It appears after becoming Boston's mayor he sent delegates to New York and Philadelphia to study fire fighting techniques in those cities. The author of this letter read about this mission, and sent Mayor Quincy a lengthy letter on the subject. The probable author is Solon Robinson (1803-1880), although his signature is partially obscured by a tear. However, on the back page, a smudged docketed note identifies him as Solon Robertson or Robinson. Robinson was a writer, and would become a well known Indiana pioneer. In any case, the author would suggest a far more modern system for fighting fires, than the existing practice of engines carrying water to fires, which would become useless when the water ran out. he proposed putting lead aqueduct pipes "laid deep underground and leading to every part of the city." While her does not use the term fire hydrants, the water would be accessed from locked iron covers that would serve that function. ABN.

Forty-six fine watercolours elegantly bound in a nineteenth-century album.

Probaly Venice: The illustrations date from 1795 to 1825. An exquisite suite of watercolours, including a beautiful series of scenes documenting a Venetian commedia dell'arte troupe, by the Italian artist Francesco Novelli. Francesco Novelli (1767-1836), one of the preeminent artists of his generation, lived in Venice where he was best known for his outstanding book illustration. He enjoyed a long and successful career that culminated in the landmark editions of Don Quixote (1819) and Gil Blas (1820). Novelli is also known for illustrating works such as the Fasti Veneziani (1794), hinting at his abiding interest in the theatre and the performing arts. In this unmatched collection of Novelli's watercolours, the greatest number are piquant images of a troupe of the commedia dell'arte, with especially fine depictions of Pierrot himself, as well as other key figures such as Columbine and Harlequin. There is a remarkable series of scenes from a play, as well as studies of individual performers, many so precisely rendered that it is almost certain Novelli is depicting a known troupe. The remaining images cover all aspects of contemporary life, including several military vignettes (perhaps scenes from the diorama) as well as charming rural scenes. Several show Novelli's work at its most sympathetic, especially in his studies of street vendors and town squares. Many of these scenes derive from a period when the troupe was on the road. Some of the liveliest paintings depict street performers, conjurors and Punch and Judy shows. Unpublished, although the compilation of the album suggests this might have been Novelli's original intention. An exceptional collection, incomparably rare, and providing a wonderful insight into Italian theatre of the Golden Age. Small oblong quarto, 185 x 275mm, a beautiful album containing 46 fine watercolours of various sizes and shapes ranging from delicate circular vignettes to larger scenes of urban and theatrical life, elegantly bound in nineteenth-century ochre morocco, ornately gilt.

1825 - 2 vol. de I. Carte, (4), XI, Paris, Arthus-Bertrand, 1825, in-8, 2 vol. de I. Carte, (4), XI, CLVI, 210pp, 2pl. - II. An account of an Embassy of the Kingdom of Ava.", Londres, 1800). , 1825. 1825. UNITED STATES. WAR DEPT. Military Laws of the United States; to which is Prefixed the Constitution of the United States. By Trueman Cross. Washington: Edward De Krafft, 1825. xxxi, [1], 279 p. Contemporary sheep. Foxed, binding scuffed but very tight and solid. William G. McNeill's copy, signed and dated 1827 on the title page and with his name neatly lettered in ink on the front cover. In a portfolio and fine morocco-backed slipcase. First edition of the first attempt to fully codify the military laws of the United States. Preceded by the Constitution, the work contains the texts of all laws pertaining to the military in the United States, beginning in 1776 and continuing through 1824, including a comprehensive 17-page index. The book was compiled by Trueman Cross under the authority of the War Department. Cross was a career military officer and is often considered the first important fatality of the Mexican War, having been killed by Mexican banditti on the Rio Grande near Fort Texas in April 1846. This copy belonged to William G. McNeill, an army topographical engineer who left the service in the late 1820s to become a railroad engineer. He supervised the surveying and construction of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and eventually became one of the foremost railroad engineers in the country. Cross's book, though owned by several libraries, is very rare in trade. No copy appears in the auction records from the mid- 1970s onward, and it is unlisted in Shoemaker's American Imprints. This is a lovely copy, in the original binding, with a fine provenance.

Signed Manuscript Letter Regarding a Plan for Fighting Fire in Boston.

Sag Harbor, Long Island, NY: , July 2, 1825. Letter sheets (8" x 12") 3 pages plus integral address leaf. ABN.

Condition: Very Good. Complete, solid, impressive condition (as reflected in photos) with a very minimum of bumped corners and only a single endpaper(s) page (last one in book) with a 1" of top strip gone (see photo)."View of the Hebrews is an 1823 [note: this item is the 1825 edition] book written by Ethan Smith, a United States Congregationalist minister, who argued that Native Americans were descended from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. This was a relatively common view during the early nineteenth century, as most Europeans and Americans had a view of history as biblical.[1] Numerous commentators on Mormon history, from LDS Church general authority B. H. Roberts to Fawn M. Brodie, biographer of Joseph Smith, have noted similarities in the content of View of the Hebrews and the Book of Mormon, which was first published in 1830, seven years after Ethan Smith's book". Rebound to style in half sheep, marbled boards, plain spine, 5 compartments formed by triple gilt fillet, red morocco label in the second. Each has prefatory material in Latin and the first two parts also have an extensive Arabic–Latin glossary. The three parts are: "Institutiones juris Mohammedani circa bellum contra eos qui ab islamo sunt alieni. E duobus al-Codurii codicibus", which presents a selection from the Mukhtasar of al-Quduri, a legal epitome of composed 973–1037 by a leading Sunni fakih, jurist, of the Hanafi school, extracts discussing the legal ramifications of Islamic war against infidels; "Zohairi Carmen al-moallakah appellatum. Cum scholiis Zuzenii integris et Nachasi selectis e codicibus manuscriptis" offers a translation with scholia of the Moallaka of Ka'b ibn Zuhair, pre-Islamic poet; and "Syria descripta a Scherifo el-Edrisio et Khalil ben-Schahin Dhaheri. E codicibus Bodleianis" an extract from al-Idrisi's universal geography of those parts discussing Syria. Rosenmüller (1768–1835), the son of an evangelical theologian, became a professor at the University of Leipzig, firstly in Arabic, 1796, and subsequently in oriental languages from 1813. A pioneering effort to make the texts of important Arabic manuscripts available to scholars and to open them to a wider readership with Latin translations and scholarly notes.         LIONEL LINCOLN; or, The Leaguer of Boston

1825. [unopened, in original boards] In Two Volumes. By the Author of The Pioneers, Pilot, &c. New-York: Published by Charles Wiley | D. Fanshaw, Printer, 1825 [1824 in Vol II]. Original drab paper-covered boards with printed spine labels. First Edition of this "Legend of the Thirteen Republics" (per the fly-titles). This was Cooper's fifth book, following PRECAUTION (1820), THE SPY (1821), THE PIONEERS (1823) and THE PILOT (1824). After this Cooper decided that he would launch a series of thirteen novels of historical fiction, one for each of the original colonies -- beginning here with Massachusetts. Set during the Revolutionary War, Lionel Lincoln was a Boston-born member of a British noble family -- who accordingly faced conflicts and split loyalties during the War. Neither Cooper nor the public thought much of this novel, so he abandoned the project -- and with his next novel, would hit a home run (get it? -- Cooperstown?) with THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS (1826).~LIONEL LINCOLN first came out in two volumes in New York, as here, on February 5, 1825; later in February it was published in three volumes by John Miller in London. As Blanck points out, it is curious how significantly the two title pages differ from each other: first and foremost, Vol I is dated 1825 and Vol II is dated 1824; but also, "In Two Volumes" appears in Vol I only, there is no "The" before "Pioneers" in Vol II, and "Vol I" and "Vol II" are in very different fonts.~As with all copies, page 96 in Vol II is mispaginated "56"; at the bottom of page 121 of the same volume, "opinion" and the signature mark "11" are here properly printed (indicating that this was one of the earlier copies in the print run, but meaning nothing as to which copies actually reached the public first).~This set is still, remarkably, in the publisher's original boards-and-label binding -- a fragile binding that was meant to be temporary, until the buyer arranged something more permanent (half-leather) with a bookbinder. The leaves in these particular volumes not only are uncut but are still unopened. Condition is very good-plus -- both volumes have a little wear at the spine ends, and Vol II has some string-indents in the edges of its front board. This condition is about as advantageous as is possible for this pair of volumes in original binding. Blanck 3832; Spiller & Blackburn 6.

DE KALVERSTRAAT, HET ELYSIUM VAN ONZE FLANEURS EN ONZE GRISETTES ?Vue D?Amsterdam no 22. Prijs: ?650,-.

Wieland Sammtliche Werke 1825 beautiful green 52 vol book set leather 50+ plates

1825 - Sammtliche Werke Complete 52-volume set. By Christoph Martin Wieland Issued Leipzig, 1825 by Georg Joachim Goschen. Each volume c. 250-300 pp. All with 1 engraved frontis= 52 plates throughout. Full contemporary green boards, smooth spines with gilt decoration, devices & black gilt leather labels, owner's name stamped in gilt on red oval morocco labels to front boards, boards outlined in gilt patterns, wonderful engraved frontispieces throughout. The 50+ engraved near miniature frontispieces are often charming, well executed, richly printed, and are all signed in the plate by the engraver. Attractive, rare, monumental huge set of charming, early-19th century bindings which are utterly unique in shelf appearance. Set shows clear signs of usage, rubbing, small scuffing, light soiling and age, but as the pictures show, still a noble and very handsome looking old set of leather bound books. Textblocks square, tight, clean-moderately toned with some light scattered foxing throughout, which is most often heaviest on the engraved plates. Worthy of any library shelf or museum. One of the primary virtues of this set is that it's unique. A one of a kind set of antique bindings, this is the only set which survives today which looks like this, exhibiting this particular patina of time. The set casts off a visual aura utterly unlike books made today and no other set which survives today looks like this one. If you put this set in a bookcase in an old house, it will look like it's been sitting there for a long time. Sets like this display character. Slight wear to an old object gives it a modern appeal which we believe exceeds the same item in untouched almost perfect condition. Each volume measures c. 4" W x 5" H. Measures c. 52" W across shelf. (4' 4")[A6681] A picture is worth a thousand words. Please examine pictures closely, as what you see pictured is what we will send you. [note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.] Set is priced at $20 a volume. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
