Paper label with the title in an old hand on the spine. Especially interesting because of the description of the petrographic formation of these mountains. Karl [Carl] August Ludwig Freiherr von Oeynhausen (1795-1865), the main author, was a wealthy German geologist and patron, who popularised the salt bath of the famous Spa now named Bad Oeynhausen.         A Voyage Towards the South Pole, Performed in the Years 1822-24.

London: for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green,, 1825. Containing an Examination of the Antarctic Sea, to the seventy-fourth Degree of Latitude: and a Visit to Tierra del Fuego, with a Particular Account of the Inhabitants. To which is added, much Useful Information on the Coasting Navigation of Cape Horn, and the Adjacent Lands, with Charts of Harbours, etc. Octavo (225 x 140 mm). Uncut in original boards, sometime rebacked retaining the original paper spine label. Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, 8 engraved charts of which 6 folding, 6 aquatint plates comprising 4 illustrations of ships and seals after Weddell and 2 folding plates of coastal profiles. Ownership inscription, "M. A. Wilson, May 1955", and recent book label of American bibliophile and noted polar collector Martin L. Greene to the front pastedown. With the errata slip and the publisher's 16-page catalogue, "sometimes removed by contemporary binders" (Rosove). A few small scuffs to boards, tips rubbed, front inner hinge superficially cracked, but firm, a few leaves faintly dog-eared, very short closed tear to stub of map facing p. 1, plate facing p. 172 offset, second plate of coastal profiles foxed, the contents otherwise with only a few trivial marks. An excellent copy. First edition. An excellent copy in the original boards, with the ownership inscription of British pilot, African treasure-hunter and Antarctic explorer Frank Bickerton, as "Capt. R. F. C. 1917", to the front pastedown. A stirring provenance: Bickerton was one of the first students to enrol on the new aeronautical engineering programme at the City and Guilds London Institute in 1906, and was recruited shortly after to the Australian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-14, becoming the first to deploy a propeller-driven sledge on the Antarctic, and participating in a famous 1,600-mile sledge journey across previously uncharted territory, later receiving the King's Polar Medal in silver and having Cape Bickerton named in his honour. The expedition was "one of the most successful to be undertaken during the whole of the Heroic Age", and its concrete achievements easily surpassed those of Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which Bickerton was set to join before the onset of war, before enlisting instead in the Royal Flying Corps, serving with distinction in 10 and later 70 Squadron (Haddesley, Born Adventurer: The Life of Frank Bickerton, Antarctic Pioneer, introduction); After demobilisation he pursued travels in Africa and North America, and volunteered for the BEF in 1939, finishing the war as wing commander; he died at Borth in 1954. Over the course of a two-year sealing voyage, Weddell and his crew reached latitude 74°15'', the southernmost then achieved, discovering what is now known as the Weddell Sea, and also visited and described the Cape Verde Islands, South Orkney (which Weddell is credited with having discovered on his 1819-21 voyage), South Shetland, and South Georgia, before wintering in the Falklands and making further landfalls at Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, and Montevideo on the return journey. "Even when sail ships were replaced by steam ships, and wooden hulls by metallic ice-cutters, his explorations were difficult to duplicate" (idem); his narrative is also "recognized as of considerable importance for its account of the voyage and its survey of the South Shetlands" (ODNB). A highly appealing copy of the book considered "the true starting point for an Antarctic collection" (Taurus).

A catalogue of the shells contained in the collection of the late Earl of Tankerville, arranged according to the Lamarckian conchological system; together with an appendix, containing descriptions of many new species...

London, E.J. Stirling for G.B. Sowerby, 1825. 8vo (223 x 140mm). pp. vii, (-viii), 92, xxxiv, (2, Proposals for publishing, by subscription... Species Conchyliorum), with 9 hand-coloured lithographed plates, a very good uncut copy in contemporary boards with new green cloth spine and label. First edition of this catalogue of shells in the Tankerville collection, numbering 2487 specimens, with Sowerby's appendix giving detailed descriptions of new species. The fine plates, which illustrate some of these new species, were lithographed by Hullmandel, presumably from Sowerby's originals as he was an accomplished artist./Charles Bennet, fourth Earl of Tankerville, 'formed a shell collection which became famous, particularly after his death when it was put up for sale. It exceeded even the Bligh collection in choice and rare shells for it included some of the best specimens from the Portland museum and a large part of the Calonne shell collection.../'The Tankerville collection contained several rare and valuable shells ... but most of them had previously belonged to other well-known collectors and, indeed, several can be traced back to the Cook voyages, the first and most productive of which had been completed over fifty years earlier. The Tankerville sale was virtually the swan song of the Cook material... ' (Dance). It was purchased by G.B. Sowerby, for an undisclosed sum between three and four thousand pounds; Sowerby then issued this catalogue as a prospectus for sale.//Dance 291.

Prijs: ?3.950,-.

Ohio and Indiana . Improved to 1825

      H. S. Tanner, Philadelphia 1825 - Copper-engraving with full period color. An important early mapping of Ohio and Indiana: the significant second issue, reflecting new boundaries in northern Indiana created by Indian treaties. Henry Tanner's A New American Atlas , was the most distinguished atlas published in America during the nineteenth century. The maps were carefully constructed from the best and most recent surveys. They were finely engraved on a large-scale, printed on high quality paper, and carefully hand colored. Because of the great expense involved in the production and publication, the atlas was published in five parts between 1819 and 1823. The map of Ohio and Indiana originally appeared in the second part of the atlas, published in 1819. Tanner drew upon a number of important surveys, including those of Bourne, Ellicott, Volney, Darby, Kilbourn, and others. The first issue of the map is noted as being one of the earliest maps of Indiana as a state (1816). This second revised edition of the map from 1823, however, reflects the enormous changes in the region. Besides the addition of numerous counties in western Ohio, the mapping of northern Indiana changed completely following a series of Indian treaties in 1818 and 1819, including the important October 1818 Treaty of St. Mary's with the Miami. Virtually all of Indiana north of the Wabash is shown as the land of the Miami. The Delawares, who had ceded their Indiana lands in October 1818, are no longer mentioned. Several counties now appear in the state north of the 40th parallel. Other changes include the additions of many new roads, including a lengthy trail extending from Fort Wayne to Fort Dearborn. Phillips, Atlases, 3669-12 ;cf. Ristow, American Maps and Mapmakers , pps. 191-198; Rumsey 2755.012; cf. Sabin 94323.

(Howes K20; Wagner- Camp IV: 26b:1; Graff 2280; Pilling 2066; Streeter 1785; Field 949) First British edition.William Hypolitus (or Hippolitus, or Hypolite) Keating was an American geologist. His father, Baron John Keating, of Irish ancestry, had been an officer in the French army in the West Indies and had settled in Wilmington, Delaware. He was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, and then in France and Switzerland, where he studied mining. In 1822, he became Professor of Chemistry and Mineralogy at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the American Philosophical Society. He is perhaps best known for his work on the staff of Stephen Long's expedition to the Great Lakes in 1823, an account of which he published in 1824. In the account he first hypothesized the existence of what is now known as Lake Agassiz. Formed at the end of the last ice age during the retreat of the great North American glaciers Lake Agassiz was, at its peak, much larger than any currently existing lake. The tremendous significance of the discovery has come to be appreciated in recent decades because the draining of Lake Agassiz into the North Atlantic Ocean is now generally thought to have been responsible for sudden periods of cooling of Northern Hemisphere climate at the end of the Pleistocene. The most dramatic of these periods of cooling is known as the Younger Dryas.Condition:Minor tears at map folds, foxing to title and frontispiece, some offset darkening to title else a very good set.

William Hypolitus (or Hippolitus, or Hypolite) Keating was an American geologist. The most dramatic of these periods of cooling is known as the Younger Dryas. Condition: Minor tears at map folds, foxing to title and frontispiece, some offset darkening to title else a very good set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Signed Manuscript Letter Regarding a Plan for Fighting Fire in Boston.

July 2, 1825., Sag Harbor, Long Island, NY: - Letter sheets (8" x 12") 3 pages plus integral address leaf. Extensive tape repairs to folds, mostly archival tape, but some regular tape too, which has caused a little browning in areas, long tear obscures writers signature, but partially visible, creased, normal aging and browning, remnant of wax seal; otherwise good or better. The letter is to Boston Mayor Josiah Quincy (1772-1864), a future head of Harvard and served eight years in Congress. It appears after becoming Boston's mayor he sent delegates to New York and Philadelphia to study fire fighting techniques in those cities. The author of this letter read about this mission, and sent Mayor Quincy a lengthy letter on the subject. The probable author is Solon Robinson (1803-1880), although his signature is partially obscured by a tear. However, on the back page, a smudged docketed note identifies him as Solon Robertson or Robinson. Robinson was a writer, and would become a well known Indiana pioneer. In any case, the author would suggest a far more modern system for fighting fires, than the existing practice of engines carrying water to fires, which would become useless when the water ran out. he proposed putting lead aqueduct pipes "laid deep underground and leading to every part of the city." While her does not use the term fire hydrants, the water would be accessed from locked iron covers that would serve that function. ABN.

Forty-six fine watercolours elegantly bound in a nineteenth-century album.

Probaly Venice: The illustrations date from 1795 to 1825. An exquisite suite of watercolours, including a beautiful series of scenes documenting a Venetian commedia dell'arte troupe, by the Italian artist Francesco Novelli. Francesco Novelli (1767-1836), one of the preeminent artists of his generation, lived in Venice where he was best known for his outstanding book illustration. He enjoyed a long and successful career that culminated in the landmark editions of Don Quixote (1819) and Gil Blas (1820). Novelli is also known for illustrating works such as the Fasti Veneziani (1794), hinting at his abiding interest in the theatre and the performing arts. In this unmatched collection of Novelli's watercolours, the greatest number are piquant images of a troupe of the commedia dell'arte, with especially fine depictions of Pierrot himself, as well as other key figures such as Columbine and Harlequin. There is a remarkable series of scenes from a play, as well as studies of individual performers, many so precisely rendered that it is almost certain Novelli is depicting a known troupe. The remaining images cover all aspects of contemporary life, including several military vignettes (perhaps scenes from the diorama) as well as charming rural scenes. Several show Novelli's work at its most sympathetic, especially in his studies of street vendors and town squares. Many of these scenes derive from a period when the troupe was on the road. Some of the liveliest paintings depict street performers, conjurors and Punch and Judy shows. Unpublished, although the compilation of the album suggests this might have been Novelli's original intention. An exceptional collection, incomparably rare, and providing a wonderful insight into Italian theatre of the Golden Age. Small oblong quarto, 185 x 275mm, a beautiful album containing 46 fine watercolours of various sizes and shapes ranging from delicate circular vignettes to larger scenes of urban and theatrical life, elegantly bound in nineteenth-century ochre morocco, ornately gilt.

An account of an Embassy of the Kingdom of Ava.", Londres, 1800). "Complément indispensable" du voyage de Symes, la relation de Cox livre un témoignage précieux sur la Birmanie, une "contrée tellement peu connue, que son nom semble [.] se révéler pour la première fois à l'Europe" (p. XI de l'Avertissement). Ouvrage enrichi d'un grand nombre de notes et d'un essai historique sur l'empire des Birmans, par Chaalons d'Argé (1798-1869). Quelques rousseurs, dos légèrement passé.       , 1825. 1825. UNITED STATES. WAR DEPT. Military Laws of the United States; to which is Prefixed the Constitution of the United States. By Trueman Cross. Washington: Edward De Krafft, 1825. xxxi, [1], 279 p. Contemporary sheep. Foxed, binding scuffed but very tight and solid. William G. McNeill's copy, signed and dated 1827 on the title page and with his name neatly lettered in ink on the front cover. In a portfolio and fine morocco-backed slipcase. First edition of the first attempt to fully codify the military laws of the United States. Preceded by the Constitution, the work contains the texts of all laws pertaining to the military in the United States, beginning in 1776 and continuing through 1824, including a comprehensive 17-page index. The book was compiled by Trueman Cross under the authority of the War Department. Cross was a career military officer and is often considered the first important fatality of the Mexican War, having been killed by Mexican banditti on the Rio Grande near Fort Texas in April 1846. This copy belonged to William G. McNeill, an army topographical engineer who left the service in the late 1820s to become a railroad engineer. He supervised the surveying and construction of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and eventually became one of the foremost railroad engineers in the country. Cross's book, though owned by several libraries, is very rare in trade. No copy appears in the auction records from the mid- 1970s onward, and it is unlisted in Shoemaker's American Imprints. This is a lovely copy, in the original binding, with a fine provenance.
