A nineteenth century album containing forty six fine watercolours.

Probably Venice: variously dated from 1795 to 1825. Oblong small quarto album, 185 x 275mm, containing forty-six watercolours of various sizes and shapes ranging from delicate circular vignettes to larger scenes of urban and theatrical life, elegantly bound in nineteenth-century ochre morocco with ornate gilt decoration. A beautiful suite of watercolours, including a superb series of scenes of a contemporary Venetian commedia dell'arte troupe, by the Venetian painter and engraver Novelli. Featuring images from both the stage and street-performance, each of the 46 deftly drawn images is of considerable quality: this is a rare and exceptional collection that provides a wonderful insight into Italian theatre in its golden age. Francesco Novelli (1767-1836) lived his whole life in Venice where he was best known for his vivid and imaginative book illustration. He worked on Algarotti's Opere (1791-94) with his father, beginning a long and successful career culminating in his beautiful editions of Don Quixote (1819) and Gil Blas (1820). He is also known for illustrating works such as the Fasti Veneziani (1794), hinting at his abiding interest in the theatre and the performing arts. One of his most important teachers was the French artist Vivant Denon, who visited Venice in the 1790s. Denon seems to have had a formative influence on Novelli's career, not least because he introduced his pupil to the engravings of Rembrandt, noticeably influencing his style. This album includes an incomparable collection of Novelli's watercolours, with the greatest number being piquant images of a Venetian troupe of the commedia dell'arte, with especially fine depictions of Pierrot himself, as well as other key figures such as Columbine and Harlequin. It includes a remarkable series of scenes from a stage play, as well as studies of the individual performers. Indeed, many of these images are so precisely rendered that it is almost certain that Novelli depicts a well-known troupe, perhaps one with which he was personally connected. The remaining images cover all aspects of contemporary life, including several military vignettes (perhaps scenes from the diorama) as well as charming rural scenes. Several show Novelli's work at its most sympathetic, especially in his animated studies of street vendors and town squares. It is also likely that many of these scenes derive from a period when the troupe was on the road, especially as some of the liveliest show street performers, conjurors and Punch and Judy shows. These scenes reveal Novelli at the height of his powers, especially his skill in capturing the energy and fascination of the crowds that gathered to watch the impromptu performances.Unpublished, although the compilation of the album suggests that publication might originally have been Novelli's intention. This is a superb collection of images by one of the pre-eminent artists of his generation, providing an insight into Novelli's involvement with the Venetian theatre, as well as giving a unique opportunity to study the daily life of a travelling group of European artists and musicians at the turn of the nineteenth century.Early and beautifully illustrated account of New South Wales purporting to have been the work of the infamous gentleman pickpocket George Barrington. The charming hand-coloured plates are an important series of "views" of the voyage out and the early settlement. They appear for the first time in this printing, which is greatly expanded from the numerous editions of a much briefer work under approximately this title which had appeared over Barrington's name from 1795. Barrington, as is now well-attested, was most certainly not the author of this or any of the other books published in his name, but was co-opted by the London press to be the apparent author of works which were actually plagiarised from the expensive First Fleet quartos. In fact, the original source for much of Barrington's Voyage was John Hunter's Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island (1793). In turn, Barrington's Voyage, first published in 1795, was expanded into this much improved edition after "incorporating a great deal of additional material plagiarised from the first volume of David Collins' Account of the English Colony in New South Wales (1798)" (Garvey). Amongst much of interest, this edition adds a letter said to have been written by Barrington in Parramatta in 1802.Transported to New South Wales on the Third Fleet of 1791, Barrington was already a legendary hero in England. The English public's continuing interest in New South Wales and the fate of the transported convicts encouraged the publishers' appetite: they compiled information from various sources, including both official and semi-official publications as well as the popular press, to make these cheaper and thus more widely read accounts. It is quite reasonable to suggest that the little most people in Great Britain knew about New South Wales derived chiefly from one or another of the Barrington books. The book was issued by the same publisher and near the same time as the History of New South Wales, and collectors have often bound the two works to style, as here. This copy has the simple ownership stamp of the bibliographer and collector Sidney Spence.Make-up of the album:-• three portraits of peasants:•a fishmonger with his left sleeve hanging loose• a peasant women with a cob of corn• a profile of a woman in an elaborate scarf• a uniformed cuirassier rejects the entreaty of a woman• a lively scene at the market, with a grenadier, a Pierrot, and a harlequin• a crowd gathers around a conjuror in the town square• children animatedly watch a Punch and Judy show• a street performer shows a dancing bear while an urchin shows a monkey• two small round scenes:• the first of a cavalry charge• the second a peaceful domestic scene around the hearth• an infantry charge (perhaps a real scene or a diorama)• three generations of women, interior• a lively outdoors scene of the stables• two women work inside a darkened barn• four liveried horses with a cart full of hay• two small round scenes:• a scene in the yard of a hostelry• cooking in a well-provisioned kitchen• two small square scenes:• infants and burghers at a Punch and Judy show• small children crowd around an itinerant projectionist• two small square scenes:• dancing a lively jig• the children of the house at lessons• two small square scenes:• a muzzled bear is made to dance• masked members of a commedia dell'arte troupe enjoy a repast• two small square scenes:• a corpulent gent mounts his horse• a befrocked gentleman loses his hat in an impromptu swing• two small square scenes:• a mother with swaddled child and infant greets some friends• a game of cards• two small square scenes:• Pierrot chased by a 'dog'• Pierrot discovers Harlequin and Columbine (with stylized cartouche but no caption)• three medium square scenes:• the 'dog' seems to have caught Pierrot• Pierrot greets Columbine• Pierrot astride the 'dog'• two small square scenes:• a strongman lifts four children on a table by his teeth• Columbine's lover hides by pretending to be a sofa• two small square scenes:• Pierrot performs a balancing act• Pierrot discovers Harelquin and Columbine asleep• two small square scenes:• Pierrot accosted by a Satyr• Pierrot offers his hat to the 'dog'• two small square scenes:• an acrobat assumes a pose• a different acrobat stands on his hands• two small square scenes:• a female contortionist performs a trick with four glasses and a hoop• a female acrobat balances on the low-wire• two small square scenes:• one of the troupe strikes a pose• Pierrot discovers a skeleton in his closet• two small square scenes:• the skeleton torments Pierrot at table• Pierrot poses.         [BALLAD] Van Dieman's (sic) Land

IN: The everlasting songster, containing a great variety of sentimental, comic and other songs, for the present year. Lincoln : Printed by and for R.E. Leary, Silver-Street [c.1825]. Small octavo, title leaf with woodcut vignette, [22] pp, closely trimmed, but crisp and clean; an unrecorded ballad pamphlet. [BOUND WITH] The Royal Visit, containing a full and circumstantial account of every thing connected with the King's visit to Ireland ... Dublin : Printed by C. Crookes, for P. Byrne, 1821; [AND] Wright, G.M. An historical guide to the city of Dublin ... London : Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1825; firmly bound in gilt lettered, slightly later nineteenth century blue cloth (boards stained). An anonymous ballad comprised of eight 4-line verses which tells the story of three men from Nottingham who are convicted of poaching and transported to Van Diemen's Land for 14 years. "... The cottages we lived in, were built of Clods and Clay, and rotten straw for bedding but we dare not say, nay; Our cots we fenced with fire, & slumber when we can, To drive wolves and tigers upon Van Dieman's Land ... There was a girl from Birmingham, S.W. was her name, For 14 years transported - we all well knew the same, Our planter bought her freedom, and married her; off hand she gave us good usage, upon Van Dieman's Land ...." For a discussion of the balladVan Dieman's Land, see Atkinson and Roud,Street Ballads in Nineteenth-Century Britain, Ireland, and North America (pp 55-6). Atkinson and Roud suggest that this popular ballad was published as a reaction to the Night Poaching Act of 1828, and note "a high degree of textual conformity" between versions printed in Preston, Manchester, London, Portsea, Birmingham, Necastle-upon-Tyne, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Other examples of this ballad are held in Australian collections. A variant, printed on a broadside with the ballad Sweet Home, published in Newcastle-on-Tyne by Fordyce around 1830, is held in the collection of the National Library of Australia (Ferguson, 1402c). The State Library of New South Wales holds another separately issued broadside with the balladsVan Dieman's Landand Pretty Caroline, published in London by Such around 1825. The present version is a previously unrecorded variant of Roud, 519.

A Brief Sketch of the Life of Horace Carter, Who Was Executed.

1825 - Worcester, 1825. The Value of Education [Trial]. Carter, Horace [d.1825], Defendant. A Brief Sketch of the Life of Horace Carter, Who Was Executed in Worcester, Dec. 7, 1825, For the Crime of Rape. Together with Remarks on Early Education. Worcester: S.n., 1825. 16 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/4"). Stitched pamphlet. Light soiling to title page and final leaf, minor tears and chipping to some leaves, including title page, light browning and foxing throughout. Early owner annotations to title page, inkspots to a few leaves. A scarce title. $850. * Only edition. Carter, a thief and petty criminal, was executed for the rape of an elderly woman resident of the public almshouse in Worcester. Carter confessed to the crime, and offered drunkenness and his lack of moral instruction as excuses. A sociological text, the Brief Sketch says almost nothing about Carter's crime and trial. In the form of six lessons, it outlines the steps that led him to the gallows. It argues, overall, that a childhood education would have transformed him into a law-abiding, productive adult. OCLC locates 9 copies, none in law libraries. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 13781.

Journal of a Residence and Travels in Colombia, During the Years 1823 and 1824.

      - London: Printed for Henry Colburn, 1825. 2 vols., 8vo, xvi, 524; viii, 515 pp. Two hand-colored frontispieces, one engraved, the second an aquatint; two large folding maps (duplicates). Contemporary full green polished calf, backstrips gilt with red morocco labels, covers decoratively bordered in gilt and blind, board edges and turn-ins gilt-rolled, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, green silk page-markers. Gift inscription dated 1836 on flyleaf. The errata slip mentioned in Abbey is not present. Bindings lightly rubbed along joints, with a few dings to the backstrips; light offsetting from frontispieces on to title-pages; a handsome set, more than complete with the extra map. First Edition. Captain Cochrane, born into a distinguished (and notorious) Royal Navy clan, took a two-year leave from the Navy to advise the Colombian pearl fishery how to protect its divers from sharks, to travel around the country, and to study possibilities for copper mining. The breadth of his curiosity was apparently limitless and he records his adventures in absorbing detail, from observations of fandango dancers and muleteers, to a very early description of the indigenous method for extracting dart poison from frogs (probably the Golden Poison Frog). The two frontispieces, showing "The Author in the Travelling Costume of the Country" and a "Precipitous Descent of a Cordillera of the Andes in the Province of Choco," are outstanding. One wonders how the second copy of the very good map, compiled and engraved by the remarkable Sidney Hall, was acquired. Abbey, Travel, 718. Sabin 14072. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Îles Sandwich: Maisons de Kraïmokou, Premier Ministre du Roi. Fabrication des étoffes.

Paris: c. 1825. Proof before numbering, 290 x 420 mm., a fine rich impression on wove paper, "86" added in manuscript to upper right. A beautiful engraved view, prepared for the official account of Freycinet's voyage in the Uranie, of the house of the Hawaiian King Kamehameha's Chief Minister Kalanimoku (whose name is transcribed here as Kraïmokou; his name was sometimes written as Karaimoku, or variations on Crymoku, but he was widely known as William Pitt, having adopted the name in honour of the British Prime Minister, and sometimes addressed as Billy Bitt). Kalanimoku was an important liaison with the French during their 1819 visit to the islands, widely respected for his reliability and trustworthiness -- for which he was often referred to as the "Iron Cable of Hawaii". He featured heavily in the published account of the voyage for this reason, but also because he expressly requested that he be baptised by the French cleric on the voyage (the scene of his baptism aboard the French ship is one of the most famous images of this period of Hawaiian history). Kalanimoku is seen here standing in the doorway of one of his houses behind his wife Likelike, who is making tapa cloth. In the foreground is an Olo board, the largest of the Hawaiian wooden surfboards, which were reserved for royalty. The image later appeared in the huge official publication of the voyage but this is an example of a proof stage of the engraving, before it has been numbered for inclusion in the series of engravings. This proof represents the last stage in the printing process, before the Historique album itself was printed, and is known to have come from the Freycinet family archive: its presence there is no surprise, given how closely Freycinet is known to have supervised the production of the official account of the voyage, and the close watch he kept on all details of the publication, and particularly on the illustrations. Provenance: Louis de Freycinet, commander of the Uranie; subsequently in Freycinet family archives, dispersed in the twentieth century. Very good condition, with wide margins.

        Decamerone

London - William Pickering, 1825 Book. Fair. Hardcover. First edition.. A set of The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. Collated: Complete in three volumes with the 10 Stothard Plates. First edition thus with teh Foscolo introduciton. Scarce. Giovanni Boccacciowas an Italian author and poet, a friend, student, and correspondent of Petrarch, an important Renaissance humanist and the author of a number of notable works including The Decameron, On Famous Women, and his poetry in the Italian vernacular. Boccaccio is particularly notable for his dialogue, of which it has been said that it surpasses in verisimilitude that of virtually all of his contemporaries, since they were medieval writers and often followed formulaic models for character and plot. The Decameron, with the subtitle of Prince Galehaut is a 14th-century medieval allegory by Giovanni Boccaccio, told as a frame story encompassing 100 tales by ten young people. Boccaccio probably began composing the work in 1350, and finished it in 1351 or 1353. The various tales of love in The Decameron range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit, practical jokes, and life lessons contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary import, it documents life in 14th-century Italy. Condition: In original publisher's cloth bindings with paper labels to the spines. Externally, rather worn. Corners are bumped on all three volumes and boards are stained. Spines are chipped and the back strips are lifting. Front joint is very weak on volume I and likely to detach. Front hinge failed to volume III. Internally, binding is loosening in places. Pages 273-4 and 277-84 are loose in volume I. Pages are generally bright and clean with some scattered foxing. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown in volume III. Overall: FAIR..

Narrative of a Voyage Round the World, Performed in her Majesty's Ship Sulphur, During the Years 1836-1842, Including Details of the Naval Operations in China, from Dec 1840 to Nov 1841

2 volumes. xxxvii+[2]+387+[8 ad] pages with frontispiece, woodcuts in text and 7 steel-engraved plates; vi+[2]+474 pages with frontispiece, woodcuts in texts and 10 steel-engraved plates. Royal octavo (9¼x5½") in publisher's original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt covers decorative blind stamped. First Edition. In 1825, Edward Belcher accompanied Frederick William Beechey's expedition to the Pacific and Bering Strait as a surveyor. In 1836. he commanded a surveying ship on the north and west coasts of Africa and in the British seas. Belcher took up the work which Beechey had left unfinished on the Pacific coast of South America. He was on board the bomb vessel HMS Sulphur, which was ordered to return to England in 1839 by the Trans-Pacific route. Belcher made various observations at a number of islands which he visited, having been delayed by being dispatched to take part in the war in China in 1840. On 26 January 1841, the then Commander Belcher landed on Possession Point at the north shore Hong Kong Island and made the first British survey of Hong Kong harbor. After the war's end in 1842 he reached home and for his services was made a Knight Bachelor in the following year. He was then engaged in HMS Samarang, in surveying work in the East Indies, the Philippines, Geomun-do (Port Hamilton) and other places, until 1847. In 1852 Belcher led the last and largest Admiralty expedition to rescue Sir John Franklin. He was also to look for his former surveying officer in Hong Kong, Richard Collinson, and Robert McClure, whose ships had not been seen after entering the Bering Strait. He did a great deal of sledge exploration, rescued McClure and abandoned four of his five ships in the ice. He had five ships: Assistance (Belcher), Resolute (Henry Kellett, second mate George Nares), the steam tenders Pioneer(Sherard Osborn) and Intrepid (Leopold McClintock) and the depot ship North Star (William Pullen). Belcher and one tender were to enter Wellington Channel, where Franklin was thought to be, while Kellett was to go west to Melville Island and look for Collinson and McClure. North Star was to stay at Beechey Island as a supply base. He left the Nore in April 1850. By early winter Assistanceand Pioneer were frozen in at Northumberland Sound to the north of Wellington Channel while Resolute and Intrepid were frozen in off Melville Island (Arctic)?the first ships this far west since William Edward Parry in 1819. A great deal of exploration was done by man-hauled sledges. In April 1853 Leopold McClintock and others left the Resolute on sledges and returned 105 days later, having covered 1,400 miles and discovered Prince Patrick Island. Another party went west and discovered Robert McClure, whose ship was frozen in at Mercy Bay. Belcher went north by sledge and found a channel at the northern tip of Devon Island, hinting that Franklin might have used it to escape to Baffin Bay. When the ice broke up that summer, he pushed his ships up Wellington Channel and became trapped again. By February 1854 Belcher was becoming increasingly worried about the safety of his ships and men. In April he ordered Kellett to abandon his ships and return by sledge to North Star. Belcher abandoned his two ships in late July. Aided by two ships that showed up at Beechey Island (Phoenix and Breadalbane), the whole party returned to England. Belcher went through a court martial, which was automatic for any captain who had lost a ship. He was exonerated, but his sword was returned to him 'without observation'. He never again received an active command. Curiously Resolute broke free of the ice and drifted all the way to Davis Strait, where it was picked up by an American whaler.Condition:Some staining and wear to covers, spines a bit faded, ends chipped and worn, rear joint of Vol. I with chipping and loss; hinges repaired at endpapers, some light foxing and occasional mostly marginal damp staining within, the three folding maps which should be loose in a pocket not present; overall good, uncommon in the original cloth.

The part of Armando was written for the castrato Giovanni Battista Velluti, which makes the work noteworthy as the last major opera with a role for that voice type. Following its Venetian première, Il crociato took other houses by storm: within a little over a year productions were mounted in Florence, Trieste, Padua, Parma and London. The work then served as Meyerbeer's entrée to Paris, where it was first performed at the Théâtre Italien on 25 September 1825 with the soprano Giuditta Pasta in the role of Armando and Nicholas Levasseur as Aladino."         A Voyage Towards the South Pole, Performed in the Years 1822-24.

London: for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green,, 1825. Containing an Examination of the Antarctic Sea, to the seventy-fourth Degree of Latitude: and a Visit to Tierra del Fuego, with a Particular Account of the Inhabitants. To which is added, much Useful Information on the Coasting Navigation of Cape Horn, and the Adjacent Lands, with Charts of Harbours, etc. Octavo (225 x 140 mm). Uncut in original boards, sometime rebacked retaining the original paper spine label. Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, 8 engraved charts of which 6 folding, 6 aquatint plates comprising 4 illustrations of ships and seals after Weddell and 2 folding plates of coastal profiles. Ownership inscription, "M. A. Wilson, May 1955", and recent book label of American bibliophile and noted polar collector Martin L. Greene to the front pastedown. With the errata slip and the publisher's 16-page catalogue, "sometimes removed by contemporary binders" (Rosove). A few small scuffs to boards, tips rubbed, front inner hinge superficially cracked, but firm, a few leaves faintly dog-eared, very short closed tear to stub of map facing p. 1, plate facing p. 172 offset, second plate of coastal profiles foxed, the contents otherwise with only a few trivial marks. An excellent copy. First edition. An excellent copy in the original boards, with the ownership inscription of British pilot, African treasure-hunter and Antarctic explorer Frank Bickerton, as "Capt. R. F. C. 1917", to the front pastedown. A stirring provenance: Bickerton was one of the first students to enrol on the new aeronautical engineering programme at the City and Guilds London Institute in 1906, and was recruited shortly after to the Australian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-14, becoming the first to deploy a propeller-driven sledge on the Antarctic, and participating in a famous 1,600-mile sledge journey across previously uncharted territory, later receiving the King's Polar Medal in silver and having Cape Bickerton named in his honour. The expedition was "one of the most successful to be undertaken during the whole of the Heroic Age", and its concrete achievements easily surpassed those of Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which Bickerton was set to join before the onset of war, before enlisting instead in the Royal Flying Corps, serving with distinction in 10 and later 70 Squadron (Haddesley, Born Adventurer: The Life of Frank Bickerton, Antarctic Pioneer, introduction); After demobilisation he pursued travels in Africa and North America, and volunteered for the BEF in 1939, finishing the war as wing commander; he died at Borth in 1954. Over the course of a two-year sealing voyage, Weddell and his crew reached latitude 74°15'', the southernmost then achieved, discovering what is now known as the Weddell Sea, and also visited and described the Cape Verde Islands, South Orkney (which Weddell is credited with having discovered on his 1819-21 voyage), South Shetland, and South Georgia, before wintering in the Falklands and making further landfalls at Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, and Montevideo on the return journey. "Even when sail ships were replaced by steam ships, and wooden hulls by metallic ice-cutters, his explorations were difficult to duplicate" (idem); his narrative is also "recognized as of considerable importance for its account of the voyage and its survey of the South Shetlands" (ODNB). A highly appealing copy of the book considered "the true starting point for an Antarctic collection" (Taurus).

A catalogue of the shells contained in the collection of the late Earl of Tankerville, arranged according to the Lamarckian conchological system; together with an appendix, containing descriptions of many new species...

London, E.J. Stirling for G.B. Sowerby, 1825. 8vo (223 x 140mm). pp. vii, (-viii), 92, xxxiv, (2, Proposals for publishing, by subscription... Species Conchyliorum), with 9 hand-coloured lithographed plates, a very good uncut copy in contemporary boards with new green cloth spine and label. First edition of this catalogue of shells in the Tankerville collection, numbering 2487 specimens, with Sowerby's appendix giving detailed descriptions of new species. The fine plates, which illustrate some of these new species, were lithographed by Hullmandel, presumably from Sowerby's originals as he was an accomplished artist./Charles Bennet, fourth Earl of Tankerville, 'formed a shell collection which became famous, particularly after his death when it was put up for sale. It exceeded even the Bligh collection in choice and rare shells for it included some of the best specimens from the Portland museum and a large part of the Calonne shell collection.../'The Tankerville collection contained several rare and valuable shells ... but most of them had previously belonged to other well-known collectors and, indeed, several can be traced back to the Cook voyages, the first and most productive of which had been completed over fifty years earlier. The Tankerville sale was virtually the swan song of the Cook material... ' (Dance). It was purchased by G.B. Sowerby, for an undisclosed sum between three and four thousand pounds; Sowerby then issued this catalogue as a prospectus for sale.//Dance 291.

The catalog is preserved as made, sewn in the yamatotoji style with red silk ribbon with a hand painted cover design in five colors, showing a weathered pair of gorinto on a pedestal bordered by grasses. Designs were done freehand in sumi-e on thirty eight folded leaves of hoshi shi paper sprinkled with mica: twenty three pages of special designs were also done in gray. Many designs were intended to be further customized and were designed for a particular style of Japanese garden. Most designs have identifying captions and nineteen show separate details or customizing options including for, lantern platforms, or fireboxes and pot bases, or pedestals. SIZE: 266 x 190 mm. PAGES: 76 pages + 2 blank pages. CONDITION: Near Good. Pages: worming, principally small, doesn't detract, generally two small holes in the gutter, some pages with worm tracks in the bottom margin.

Prijs: ?3.950,-.

To which is added, much Useful Information on the Coasting Navigation of Cape Horn, and the Adjacent Lands, with Charts of Harbours, etc.

London: for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, 1825 - Octavo (225 x 140 mm). Uncut in original boards, sometime rebacked retaining the original paper spine label. Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, 8 engraved charts of which 6 folding, 6 aquatint plates comprising 4 illustrations of ships and seals after Weddell and 2 folding plates of coastal profiles. Hill 1843; NMM I 1082 for the second edition; Rosove 345.A1; Taurus 4.
