Paris, Levrault, 1825-27. 2 volumes. Royal-8vo. pp. viii, 664, with 2 folded tables and 109 engraved plates. Recent green calf, richly gilt decorated spines, with 4 raised bands, gilt borderlines on covers. Nissen ZBI, 391. "De Blainville's definition of 'malacologie', however, was scarcely an improvement because it signified the study of all soft-bodied creatures. That he did not intend the term to encompass all aspects of the study of the molluscs is suggested by the full title of his book, 'Manuel de malacologie et de conchyliologie', and by its contents which include a chapter on the history of 'malacologie' and another on the history of 'conchyliologie' (Dance p. 199). The fine plates are after drawings by Prêtre and Turpin, the best French natural history artists of the period. A fine copy.

The Young Artists Companion or, Drawing-book of Studies

London: S&J Fuller, 1825 The Young Artist's Companion or, Drawing-book of Studies and Landscape Embellishments: Comprising a Great Variety of the Most Picturesque Objects Required in Various Compositions of Landscape Scenery Arranged as Progressive Lessons. In modern hal brown leather with marbled boards, gilt tooling, original title label with gilt lettering and tooling to front center. Spine has gilt tooling, no title. Internally, new endpapers, bookplate to fpd, coloured frontis a little chipped at edges, [3], 4-6 pp, 40 plates, 7-10 pp, 12 plates, 11-15 pp, 12 plates. Some of the plates have 4 images but mostly 1, the last 12 are all in full colour and stunning!, plates are dated between Oct. 1st. 1819 and June 1823. Some foxing and minor browning throughout, as is normal. A great book just to sit and look at. Cox, landscape painter, whose standing as a drawing-master was reinforced by the publication of a number of successful manuals, beginning with Ackermann's New Drawing Book in Light and Shadow in 1809: although not credited to Cox, its range of subjects—Birmingham, Wales, and London—strongly suggests that he supplied the images, if not the text. This was soon followed by A Series of Progressive Lessons Intended to Elucidate the Art of Painting in Water Colours, a hugely popular step-by-step drawing manual which was first published in 1811, and reached its ninth edition in 1845. A Treatise on Landscape Painting and Effect in Water Colours (1813–14, reissued 1840) cemented Cox's reputation, and was followed by The Young Artist's Companion (1819–20, revised 1825) See ODNB for a full Bio. Binding as above, edges and extremities rubbed, spine faded with paper chipped at joints, head, and foot, partially exposing binding structure, front joint cracked. Free endpapers lacking; fly-leaves with inscriptions as above. Sewing loosening, with some signatures slightly proud and others just starting to separate. A few instances of dried plant matter laid in, including three four-leaf clovers. Occasional spots of minor foxing; one small ink stain affecting two leaves but not obscuring text. Some corners bumped. => A multi-generational heirloom devotional, still lovely, and a very appealing example of such.. 8vo (17.4 cm, 6.8"). [2], [v]/vi, 417, [1] pp. [with] Bible. O.T. Psalms. German. Des Königs und Propheten Davids Psalter. Verdeutscht durch Dr. Martin Luther. Hofbuchdr, 1829]. 8vo. 56 pp.Later printing of the popular Altenburg hymnal, this copy brightly bound in peasant style, inscribed, and clearly cherished; with two related texts. The Gesangbuch (words only) was edited by theologian Demme, and is printed in double columns of small but legible Fraktur; this 1825 edition is relatively uncommon. The publication information of the two additional works was suggested by WorldCat.Provenance: Front cover gilt-stamped M.K./S.W.M./1828. Front fly-leaf with attractively inked presentation inscription in German, signed Sophie Wiedemann in Lobitz and dated 1828, above additional inscriptions dated 1879, 1886, and 1938, the latter in English; back fly-leaf with inked prayer in Wiedemann's hand, above a later inked prayer in English, dated 1984.Binding: Contemporary varnished red paper, covers framed in gilt roll, covers and spine with floral designs painted in shades of pink, green, and yellow., front cover with gilt-stamping as above. All edges gilt, and gauffered at corners and at the spine. Pastedowns of light blue and red paste-paper.The binding is highly reminiscent of a "peasant" binding, but clearly is not one as these are generally understood: It is not vellum, not embossed; but yes, it is definitely handpainted and folk-art inspired. => A variant.

Many important contributions were made at this time by such luminaries as Bentham, Lieber, Livingston and Tocqueville. Roscoe's work was equally important. Believing that retribution should play no part in criminal jurisprudence, he advocated milder punishments, believing they would reform the criminal. He outlined these ideas in Observations on Penal Jurisprudence, And the Reformation of Criminals (1819). He elaborated them, and responded to critics, in two later volumes: Further Observations on Penal Reform (1823) and Observations on Penal Jurisprudence...Part III (1825). Verplanck [1786-1870] was a prominent member of the New York Bar and an important reformer. He served four terms in the U.S. Congress, where he was chairman of the Ways and Means committee. OCLC locates 3 individual copies and 9 copies bound with Roscoe's other volumes. Not in Sweet & Maxwell. British Museum Catalogue (Compact Edition) 21:1106.

THE WORKS OF SAMUEL JOHNSON, LL.D. [with] BOSWELL, JAMES. LIFE OF JOHNSON

Oxford: Printed for William Pickering, London; and Talboys and Wheeler, Oxford, 1825. Hardcover. In Extraordinarily Handsome Ornate Morocco, andUnusual with Both Johnson's Works and Boswell's Life. 251 x 152 mm (9 7/8 x 6"). 15 volumes. Edited by Francis Pearson Walesby. VERY HANDSOME MID-19TH CENTURY MAROON PEBBLE-GRAIN MOROCCO, LAVISHLY GILT, covers with an intricate frame comprised of three blind and six gilt fillets, the latter flanking an elegant string of gilt floral sprays, mandorlas, coils, and rosette cornerpieces, the large central panel further defined by ornmental cornerpieces connected by a gilt rule; spines lavishly gilt in compartments with central floral bouquet surrounded by swirling vines, leaves, and many small tools, turn-ins with triple gilt fillet, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With frontispiece portraits of Johnson and Boswell and three folding facsimiles of Johnson's writing. A Large Paper Copy. "Works": Courtney & Smith, pp. 166-67; Fleeman 87.3W/22a (vols. I-IX) and 87.3W/1.2/1a (vols. X-XI); Keynes, p. 62; Brunet III, 551; Graesse III, 471; Lowndes II, 1217-18. "Life": Keynes, p. 43; Pottle 90. Just a hint of rubbing to extremities, but the remarkably pleasing bindings essentially unworn and extremely lustrous. Two leaves with small closed tears, perhaps half a dozen pages per volume with a pinpoint fox mark in the margin, one page with a small stain, but a beautiful copy internally, unusually clean, fresh, and smooth, and with expansive margins. AN ESPECIALLY ATTRACTIVE SET. Although William Pickering began his legendary publishing career in 1820, it wasn't until 1825, after a move to larger premises, that he began to produce substantial numbers of high quality editions. In the latter year, Pickering began his association with the Oxford firm of Talboys and Wheeler, and with this association began the series of books known collectively as the Oxford English Classics. According to Keynes, "these handsome volumes were produced at the printing offices of the Oxford partners, but their general design shows clear signs of Pickering's predominating influence. The books are large octavos, well printed on ribbed paper with a fine Oxford device on the title pages." Keynes says that our 11-volume edition of Johnson and the four-volume Boswell's Johnson issued in 1826 "are the most valuable of the series," and singles out this edition of the "Life" for "special merit." Brunet calls the collection of Johnson's works "one of the best, and the most complete to this time." Our Large Paper Copy has stately margins that complement the luxurious bindings, pleasing to the eye and to the touch. The editor, Francis Pearson Walesby (1798-1858), was an Oxford professor. Although the title page of the first volume announces that the set will consist of nine volumes, a 10th and 11th were added, of "Parliamentary Debates." These are Parliamentary reports which Johnson began to make at the age of 32 for the "Gentleman's Magazine.".

Gerhard Fleischer Leipzig: Gerhard Fleischer, 1825. Weber, Ernst Heinrich (1795-1878) & Weber, Wilhelm Eduard (1804-1891). Wellenlehre auf Experimente gegrundet. . . . 8vo. xxviii, 574, [2]pp. 2 printed folding tables, 18 folding engraved plates. Leipzig: Gerhard Fleischer, 1825. 209 x 130 mm. Half speckled sheep, marbled boards c. 1825, rebacked. Light foxing & browning, otherwise very good. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 766. The Weber brothers' Wellenlehre, containing experimental investigations of water and sound waves, was the first work to apply hydrodynamics to the circulation of the blood. In 1827 Ernst Weber, assisted again by his brother Wilhelm, described how the arteries' elasticity transforms the pulsing motion of the blood in the large vessels to a smooth motion in the smaller ones. In 1834, with his brother Eduard (1806-1871), Ernst became the first to measure the velocity of the pulse wave, which he showed to be much faster than the flow of the blood. Ernst Weber's work laid the base for the exact analysis of fluid motion in elastic tubes. DSB. Norman 2190.

The Interior of the Fives Court, with Randall and Turner Sparring. Engraved by C[harles] Turner after T. Blake

London: W. Sams Book & Printseller to the Royal family opposite St James's Palace 1825 London: W. Sams, Book & Printseller, to the Royal family opposite St James's Palace, 1825. (BOXING) Third state, the first being produced in 1818. 20 x 26 inches, matted and framed to 27 x 33 inches overall. Hand-colored aquatint with etched outline. . Snelgrove, British Sporting and Animal Prints, p. 48-9, color plate 5; Siltzer, pp. 319, 320, 325; Wilder, Sporting Prints, p. 178, color plate p. 179; Magriel, The Ring and the Glove, pp. 17-18 . A large and important depiction of an exhibition sparring match held in Fives Court, in London's Little St. Martin's Street, a tennis and fives court hired for such events, the participants, unlike a regular, bare-knuckle bout, being fitted with gloves ("mittens" or "mufflers"). The contestants shown were Ned Turner, "The Out-and-Outer", who had killed a man in the ring, serving time for manslaughter, and Jack Randall, "The Prime Irish Lad", unbeaten throughout 12 years of ring activity. The two had fought an epic fight in 1818, which Randall won to become the Lightweight champion. A large number of famous pugilists are pictured in the audience, not always accurately (Jem Belcher, the famed champion and the first real sporting celebrity in the modern sense, is shown, although he was dead), and it is a fair portrait of "The Fancy" as the mix of often raffish sporting professionals, and upscale spectators including nobility, came to be known. THE MOST FAMOUS BOXING PRINT EVER PRODUCED, AND AN IMPERISHABLE EVOCATION OF REGENCY SPORT

View of the landing at Rangoon of part of the Combined forces from Bengal and Madras, under the Orders of Sir Archd. Campbell, K.C. B. on the 11th of May 1824

London: Kingsbury & Co. and Thomas Clay, [1825]. Hand-coloured aquatint plate engraved by H. Pyall after Moore. In excellent condition. Image size: 10 x 14 5/8 inches. 13 x 16 5/8 inches. 13 7/8 x 19 inches. A beautiful plate from Moore's work "Eighteen Views taken at & Near Rangoon," an important visual record of the Burmese countryside and scenery, and of the war between the Burmese and British in 1824 to 1826. Following Burmese incursions into British held territory in 1821-1823 (including the successful invasion of Assam), the Governor-General, Lord Amherst, declared war on Burma on February 24, 1824. The British were successful in expelling the Burmese from Assam, but Bandula, the ablest of the Burmese generals, repelled a British detachment at Ramu on the Chittagong frontier. In reply, the British sent an expedition of 11,000 men under Major-General Archibald Campbell and ships under Captain Frederick Marryat to attack Rangoon by sea. The expedition resulted in the capture of Rangoon on May 11, 1824, with the Burmese forces fleeing into jungles of Pegu. Meanwhile, Bandula had been recalled and arrived in Rangoon on December 1 with 60,000 men. He was, however, defeated on December 15 and then retreated to Donabew, where, after a brave defence, he was killed in April 1825. On April 25, Campbell captured Prome, the capital of Lower Burma. The fighting continued sporadically throughout the rest of 1825 and into 1826, until a peace treaty was signed on February 24. Joseph Moore was a Lieutenant in the 89th Regiment. Frederick Marryat's involvement in the conflict began in March 1823 when he "commissioned the Larne for service in the East Indies, where he arrived in time to take an active part in the first Burmese war. From May to September 1824 he was senior naval officer at Rangoon, and was officially thanked for his able, gallant, and zealous co-operation with the troops. The very sickly state of the ship obliged him to go to Penang, but by the end of December he was back at Rangoon, and in February 1825 he had the naval command of an expedition up the Bassein River, which occupied Bassein and seized the Burmese magazines."
