The complete Angler, or The Contemplative Man's Recreation. Two Parts, The First by Izaak Walton (The complete Angler, or The Contemplative Man's Recreation), The Second by Charles Cotton (The Complete Angler, being Instructions how to angle for a trout or grayling in a clear stream)

The first performance took place on October 3, 1822, with Beethoven leading the orchestra from the piano. & & "That Beethoven should have conceived music so solemn and so little popular for the opening ceremony of a theatre is yet another proof of how deeply ingrained in him were the principles of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment. The very use of the word 'Weihe' - consecration - suggests that for him the theatre was not so much a place of entertainment as an institution for the moral education of the public. We do not meet this attitude again until Wagner's Bühnenweihfestpiel, Parsifal." Cooper: Beethoven The Last Decade 1817-1827, p. 348.

Lake Patterson, near Pattersons Plain Hunters River. New South Wales

London,: Circa, 1825.. Hand-coloured aquatint, 170 x 265 mm. Framed. Letterpress verso. Lycett arrived in Sydney as a convict in 1814, by 1821 he had won a full pardon and in 1822 left for England where he began work on his celebrated Views in Australia or New South Wales, & Van Dieman's Land ... When published the views met with immediate success. Lycett was a very significant artist of this period in Australia and his Views in Australia was an important early visualization of Macquarie's Australia and also of the Aboriginal people of New South Wales. The views are of remarkable importance as they provide one of the first glimpses of the colony that can be recognised as obviously Australian.Lycett's style tended to be romantic with the depiction of park-like landscapes which gives the appearance of rural harmony. Lycett's work would have contributed to the new interest in the colony for trade and emigration.

The Temple of Jupiter Olympus and the Acropolis of Athens "Le Temple de Jupiter Olympien et l'Acropolis d'Athens

Greece: Paris "Imprimerie de Dondey-Dupré, Rue St Louis, No 46, Au Marais." 1825-37. Coloured lithograph of the Olympieion with the Acropolis from Louis Dupré's " Voyage â Athènes et â Constantinople...". Original hand colour; verso blank; blind stamp of Dupré as issued. The view shows the Temple of Olympian Zeus, with the Acropolis in the background; from this angle it is possible to see part of the town , the Plaka district, on the Acropolis slopes. Interestingly Dupré illustrates a gathering of Turks beside the temple seemingly being addressed by an Imam, suggesting that the space was used as an open air mosque. Bright & clean; slight crease causing lightening of the colour of the sky in the middle of the view. Louis Dupré [1789-1837]. A pupil of Jacques-Louis David in Paris, Louis Dupré became resident in Rome and was appointed official painter to the prince Jerome Bonaparte, in 1811. In 1819 he traveled to Greece. He was received by the French consul Fauvel in Athens and introduced into Greek society allowing him to make his paintings of important personalities of the time, both in Athens and in Joannina where he portayed Ali Pascha, his family and attendants. He continued to Thessaly and from there he sailed to Constantinople, where he made the acquaintance of Prince Michael Soutzo of Moldavia with whom he returned to Italy via Romania. His work " Voyage â Athènes et â Constantinople" was published in 10 livraisons, in Paris in 1825 through to 1837, consisting of 40 lithographs: portraits, costumes and views of Athenian antiquities. [Colnaghi of London pirated 2 of the portraits of Ali Pascha and published them before Dupré.] The work became synonymous with the Greek War of Independence. The image of Mitropolos, holding the Greek standard symbolises the Greek victory. To which is added, The life of our Blessed Saviour, and the Holy Evangelists. Illustrated with nearly Four Hundred Engravings on Wood

London: Published by All the Booksellers. Printed and Sold by William Dean, Market-Street, Manchester, [no date], [1825 - 1849]. 12mo (in 12s and 6s), 144 x 80 mms., pp. vi, [7] - 132, woodcut frontispiece, 388 woodcut vignettes in text, recent green quarter sheepskin, contemporary marbled boards (slightly rubbed); a very good copy, with the 19th century autograph of "Ch. A. Bodenham" on the recto of the front free end-paper. "The mode of instruction by Hierogliphics originated with the ancient Egyptian priests and philosophers; but their motive for using it was widely different from ours; not to diffuse instruction, but to confine it to a select few, was their objects: ours, on the contrary, is to engage the attention, by striking the eye, and to make the lesson delightful as well as profitable." From the Preface. This edition seems to be almost identical to that published in Manchester by S. Johnson and Son in 1839 and reprinted several times after that. Other contributors listed in the entry at Trinity College Library Dublin include ÒThomas Kelly; William Clowes; Abraham Wivell; Robert Cooper; Herbert Ward; Charles Henry Sanford; and Walker & CockerellÓ. DNB notes that it first appeared in 1734: ÒA list of Wilford's publications may be found in the Daily Courant (7 January 1734). From 1731 to 1741 he published a number of titles in parts by subscription, of which the most interesting are two duodecimo volumes of Select Trials É at the Sessions-House in the Old Bailey (1734), covering some Ôhair-raising varieties of crimeÕ (Wiles, 207). This is the first Newgate Calendar and reprints or condenses not only the usual sessions paper and ordinary's account, but also some scarce ephemera. The emphasis is on the sensational and bizarre, but the facts are reliably reported; a reprint with two more volumes (not by Wilford) of a continuation appeared in 1742.Ó
