A JOURNAL OF A TOUR AROUND HAWAII, THE LARGEST OF THE SANDWICH ISLANDS. BY A DEPUTATION FROM THE MISSION ON THOSE ISLANDS

Boston. 1825.. 264pp. plus four plates and folding map. Engraved portrait frontispiece. Original plain boards. Spine bit chipped, contemporary presentation inscription on front free endpaper. Overall a very good, crisp copy in original state, untrimmed. In a blue cloth slipcase. An important early account of Hawaii by a visiting group of London missionaries in company with Rev. William Ellis. Ellis, a British missionary, established the first printing press in the South Seas, and while on Hawaii, he and Hiram Bingham printed the first book there in 1823, a hymnal. "Rev. Ellis and three of the American missionaries, Asa Thurston, Artemas Bishop and Joseph Goodrich, were dispatched for the purpose [to learn more of the Hawaiian people with a view to establishing mission stations in Hawaii] in June, 1823, landing at Kailua and spending two months in making the circuit of the island. They were the first white men to visit the volcano of Kilauea. Upon the return of the party to Honolulu, a joint JOURNAL of the expedition and observations was prepared by Ellis. Copies of this, together with a report by the American missionaries, were printed in Boston in 1825..." - Hill. The handsome engraved plates depict Kuakini, governor of Hawaii; a missionary preaching to natives; the great crater at Kilauea; the burial house of Keave; and Makoa a guide to the deputation of missionaries. The map of Hawaii is improved from that of Vancouver. The appendix contains biographical information about persons mentioned in the text, geographical data, names of the former gods of Hawaii, and an alphabet and vocabulary of the Hawaiian language. Ellis later rewrote portions of this work, adding further observations, which were published collectively the following year in London as NARRATIVE OF A TOUR THROUGH HAWAII. A beautiful copy of this missionary account of the island of Hawaii, one of the earliest and probably the best of such accounts. STREETER SALE 3751. HILL 545 (ref).

Esquisse de la Ville de Sydney, Capitale des Colonies anglaises, à la Nouvelle-Hollande

Paris: Pillet Aine, 1825. Engraved map measuring 320 x 237 mm. (plate size), a very good copy, framed. Detailed and finely engraved map of the budding settlement at Sydney Cove, from the official published account of the Uranie voyage of 1817-1820 to Australia and the Pacific commanded by Louis de Freycinet. This map depicts Sydney in 1819, when Freycinet and his party spent several very pleasant weeks anchored in the harbour, Louis and Rose became close friends of the Governor, Lachlan Macquarie and his family. Freycinet was astounded by the growth of the settlement and the quality of the architecture he encountered, having previously visited Sydney Cove as an officer on the Baudin voyage of 1800-1804.The detail of this map reflects the curiosity of the French visitors who enjoyed the warm hospitality now that Britain and France were at peace and they could inspect the settlement unhindered. The map details a number of landmarks that remain familiar to this day, including Hyde Park, Woolloomooloo and the Botanical Gardens. Indeed, the street plan engraved here remains largely unchanged as the central business district of Sydney today. The map is a remarkable visual record of Sydney.

Memorial on the Upward Forces of Fluids

1825. |~||~||~|FIRST AMERICAN WORK ON AVIATION GENET, Edmond Charles. Memorial on the Upward Forces of Fluids. 112 pp. With 5 engraved plates, 1 folding table, plus one illustration in the text. 8vo., 227 x 140 mm, bound in original printed boards as issued, preserved in a new half blue morocco protective box. Albany: Packard & Van Benthuysen, 1825. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition. "From a scientific viewpoint this is the most important American publication in the field of aviation, for it is the first printed suggestion of the correct theory of the heavier than air machine" (Honeyman 1475). In this uncommon work, Genet contemplates steam being applied to aeronautics and the plates include a depiction of an Aerostatic Vessel. It is further described in the Streeter sale as: "extremely rare and important, the first book printed in the United States on practical aeronautics and on the first patent for an aeronautical invention, by the then-naturalized former Ambassador from France and key figure in the Genet Affair" (Streeter 3974). Some foxing throughout on account of the paper stock, minor staining or soiling to boards; overall in superb condition. Howes G100. See: Brockett 356 for later reprint only. Honeyman Catalogue 1475.

A practical treatise on rail-roads and carriages

London: J. Taylor, 1825. Tredgold, Thomas (1788-1829). A practical treatise on rail-roads and carriages, shewing the principles of estimating their strength, proportions, expense, and annual produce. . . . xi, [1, errata], 184pp. Undated 16-page publisherâ??s catalogue bound in front. 4 engraved plates, including folding frontispiece. London: Josiah Taylor, 1825. 228 x 142 mm. (uncut). Original boards, rebacked in cloth, corners repaired, 19th century booksellerâ??s label on front cover. Minor foxing and dust-soiling, some offsetting from plates, library stamps, shelf-mark and small circular bookplate on front pastedown and first page of publisherâ??s catalogue, but very good. First Edition. Along with Nicholas Woodâ??s Practical Treatise on Rail-Roads (1825), Tredgoldâ??s work represents the first comprehensive work on railway engineering. â??In the above, the structural features of roadbed, rails, engines and rolling stock are analyzed, and the evolution of railroads from man-powered and animal-powered to steam-powered locomotion is given. Clear and detailed engravings illustrate Stephenson's pre-Rocket engines, and others with primitive transmission of power from engine to railâ? (Dibner, Heralds of Science, no. 182). A conservative in railway matters, Tredgold believed it was â??extremely improbableâ? that trains carrying passengers would travel faster than ten miles per hour. Norman 2092..

To which is added, A Correct Account of the Late Piracies Committed in the West-Indies; and the Expedition of Commodore Porter

Haverhill: Thomas Carey, 1825. Second Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Second American edition. Boards rubbed with loss of paper along fore-edge, ink name (A. Wallace) on front flyleaf, a few pages faintly foxed, mild transfer throughout. 1825 Half-Leather. 276 pp. 12mo. Black morocco spine with gilt titles & rules over marbled boards. Contemporary full calf, gilt rules. Originally published in London in 1724, and first published in the United States in 1814. A pseudonymous work attributed to Daniel Defoe based on scholarly comparison to his other writings. This edition removes the description of Magadoxa in Ethiopia, and adds a section treating piracy in the West Indies from 24 January 1821 to 16 May 1825, as well as an engraved frontispiece depicting pirates commandeering a ship (oddly, one is armed with a hammer, the other with an axe). Sabin 32197, Howes C-144. Neither Sabin nor Howes attribute this publication to 'Capt. Charles Johnson' as is stated in the 1814 edition - Howes actually credits the publisher as the compiler and cautiously references '[a]n earlier edition [which] may have appeared at Norwich 1814. We have compared the text of the 1814 and 1825 editions and find the volumes to be identical with the exception of the changes mentioned above.         De La Perouse: or, The Desolate Island [et al, including "Guy Mannering"]

Theatre Royal, Drury Lane: Tabby Printer, 1825. Folio playbill on wove paper, 330 x 195 mm., in fine condition. La Perouse on the English stage. Rare playbill for the performance of the popular South Seas utopian melodrama based on the wreck of La Pérouse, in London on Saturday 19 November 1825. Peter Dillon did not confirm the wreck of La Pérouse's two ships on Vanikoro until 1827, but as this playbill confirms, interest in the French explorer was undiminished: the show 'will be repeated every Evening till further notice.'European fascination with the whereabouts of the lost French Pacific explorer - and the often fantastic, utopian explanations of his disappearance - continued well into the nineteenth century and even persisted after discovery of the expedition's fate. In the best pantomime traditions, the dramatis personae includes Theodore, son of La Perouse played by Miss Lane, and a surely compelling performance by Master Wieland as 'Chimpanzee, an Animal of the Desolate Island'. Any number of important hints about the production can be gleaned from the playbill, notably that the overtures and music were by Davy and Moorhead, the dresses by Mr. Banks and the Misses Smith, and the "Machinery and Properties" by Nall and Kelly. A note also says that the "new scenery" is by Marinari, Roberts and Stanfield; interestingly, the list of eight major scenes including "Storm and Shipwreck" and "Perouse's Hut and Drawbridge" notes the name of the principal artist in each case. Some idea of the spectacle may be gleaned from a few surviving graphic sources. Ferguson records a copy of an 1808 prospectus for the pantomime (see Ferguson 464b). McLaren notes a few examples of similar playbills including another Drury Lane announcement for December of the same year (340).

Views in Australia or New South Wales, & Van Diemen's Land Delineated, in Fifty Views, with descriptive Letter Press

London: J. Souter, 1825. Oblong folio, handcoloured lithographed title and 48 fine handcoloured aquatint views after drawings by Joseph Lycett, with descriptive text (final leaf neatly laid-down), two folding maps; some offsetting, modern half morocco with spine gilt lettered and decorated in compartments, edges fully gilt. A pivotal work in Australian landscape art. First edition of the great Australian plate book. This is a fine copy of the most important work on antipodean landscapes.A landmark in the development of Australian illustrated books: this is a most attractive copy. Lycett's charming, highly-coloured views of New South Wales and Tasmania are justly famous today, and the book as a whole provides a remarkable visual record of Macquarie's Australia. Not only does it provide an historical snapshot of New South Wales and Tasmania in the early decades of settlement, but especially from the point of view of colonial architecture, it is a collection of remarkable importance. Lycett's incomparable plates record some of the colony's most important houses and country seats, and provide an invaluable contextual record of many lesser-known buildings and indeed building types.Lycett had arrived in New South Wales as a convict in 1814. Trained as a portrait and miniature painter in Staffordshire, his services as a professional artist were much in demand and he was soon working for the publisher Absalom West. He was appointed artist to Major-General Macquarie, the governor of New South Wales. Impressed with Lycett's talents, Macquarie sent three of his drawings to Earl Bathurst, Secretary of the Colonies (the dedicatee of the Views) who, it is supposed in payment, granted a pardon to the artist.Little is known of Lycett after the publication of the Views, which - with Wallis' Historical Account - marks the end of an era in the publication of Australian illustrated books. Macquarie's departure and the deaths of both Lewin and Lycett meant that the illustrated books to follow would be on a rather less ambitious scale. 'As far as we know Lycett produced no more work after the completion of his Views in 1825. In the Advertisement to the complete work, issued with the first part in July 1824, Lycett announced that... he intended to publish 'in the same size and manner, the Natural History of Australia'. It is not known what became of this project. In 1825 Lycett was in his early fifties and still, no doubt, the incurable alcoholic Commissioner Bigge reported him to be a few years before; it is probable that he did not live long enough to complete the project... The death, or at any rate, the silence of Lycett after 1825 marked the end of an era in Australian plate books. The lavish productions of Wallis and Lycett celebrated the expansiveness and the buoyancy of the Macquarie age. With Macquarie gone, Lewin dead and Lycett departed, artistic life in the colony was less robust in the 1820s. Australian plate books were still being published, but they were in most cases more humble productions than those of the preceding decade' (Australian Rare Books).

[INTRIGUING ADVERTISING BROADSIDE FOR A WAX MUSEUM EXHIBITION, FEATURING STATUES OF WASHINGTON, JACKSON, LAFAYETTE, AND OTHERS, ca 1825]

[N.p., likely Medford, N.Y. ca. 1825].. Broadside, 15 x 19 inches. Some foxing, edge wear, and wrinkling. A couple long closed tears and small holes, costing a small amount of text. Good. A striking and fascinating advertising broadside for a traveling wax figure exhibition featuring statues of Gen. George Washington, Gen. Lafayette, Gen. Andrew Jackson, three famous early American commodores (William Bainbridge, Isaac Hull, and David Porter, all commanders at one point in time of the USS Constitution), "An Elegant Figure, Representing the Goddess of Liberty," and Emperor Agustin de Iturbide, the late emperor of Mexico and his wife, both in elaborate dress. A manuscript addition identifies the time and location of the exhibit as the "Charles Stearnes Hotel in Medfard [Medford?] on Tuesday the 30 day of August 1825." Based on the date, and the military nature of the wax figures, this seems to be anticipating the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence the following year. Possibly a unique copy, with no record found in OCLC.

The History of the Pirates, Containing the Lives of Those Noted Pirate Captains, Misson, Bowen, Kidd, Tew, Halsey, White, Condent, Bellamy, Fly, Howard, Lewis, Cornelius, Williams, Burgess, North, and Their Several Crews Also, an Account of the Piracies and Cruelties of John Augur, William Cunningham, Dennis Mackarthy, William Dowling, William Lewis, Thomas Morris, George Bendall, and William Ling, who were tried, condemned and executed at Nassau, New-Providence, on Friday, the 12th of October, 1718 To which is added, A Correct Account of the Late Piracies Committed in the West-Indies; and the Expedition of Commodore Porter

The type was reset and new plates were made, which makes the arrangement and pagination slightly different

A scarce work, describing and illustrating a Regency excursion to the Low Countries. Egerton begins his tour at Ostend where he was stuck for a day as it was a Sunday. Here he examined the Market Pavilion of the Prince of Orange before traveling on the the next leg of the journey which takes the artist once more to Ghent where he describes and illustrates the Exchange. Egerton then returns to Brussels to view the Palace of Schoonenberg; and then on to the main reason for his excursion: a trip to Waterloo taking in all the main sites of the battle including graves and monuments. Michael Egerton(also known as Omnium Gatherum flourished between 1821 and 1828 and produced a number of caricatures mainly of social comedy sporting scenes and jokes on the weather; almost all his work was engraved by George Hunt.         Tete Humaine enchâssée dans une Idole que les Papous conservent dans l'interieur de leurs maisons

Offak Bay or later on the voyage, 1825. Watercolour on laid paper, 482 x 310mm., large pencil sketch to the verso, some tears and nicks to the edges, small loss at lower left-hand corner not affecting either illustration; very good. Important Papuan idol. Exceptional original watercolour depicting a Papuan idol of carved timber topped by a human skull, noted in the caption as typically kept in the interior of their houses. The back of the sheet has a detailed pencil sketch of the same idol. The idol itself was acquired by the French expedition of Duperrey and is now in the Quai Branly in Paris, where it is described as a korwar sculpture and considered one of the "100 masterpieces" of their Oceania collection. The museum catalogue notes that it was acquired in Cenderawasih ("Bird of Paradise Bay") on the north coast of Papua New Guinea.Duperrey had first circumnavigated as a junior officer on the Freycinet voyage, experience which led to him being given command of La Coquille for the voyage of 1822-5. Dumont d'Urville was his second-in-command, and he in turn was later given command of two further Pacific voyages. The Duperrey voyage made many significant ports of call in the Pacific, including stays in Australia, Tahiti, and New Zealand. Under the naturalist René Lesson the voyage made many important ethnographic notes, particularly in Australia and New Zealand, and collected 'vast quantities of ethnographic and scientific data' (Hill). The Duperrey circumnavigation spent a great deal of time on the Papuan coast in 1823. The expedition reached New Ireland in August 1823, before sailing past the Duke of York group and finally reaching Offak Bay, Waigeo on 6 September. Offak Bay was the main Papuan landfall of the voyage, and after much initial reserve from the islanders, soon a great market atmosphere of trade prevailed. The term "Papua" (Papous) used in the caption was at the time chiefly associated with the western tip of the New Guinea region by the French (Quoy and Gaimard in the Freycinet account limited the area to Waigeo and neighbouring islands), so the actual trading of the idol may date from the time spent in Offak Bay.A version of this image, rather altered, was included as an engraving in the official voyage account of Duperrey, in which the idol is depicted from three angles. The printed version has the extraordinary shell-eyes in both eye-sockets, where this watercolour only has one. Was the idol damaged before the engraving was made? Or, probably more likely, was the final engraving simply "improved" based on the original sketches? The drawing was made by Masson and Carnot, probably soon after the expedition's return. (First edition. A German translation was published in Weimar in 1827-8 and in Jena in 1834. In 1821 Buckingham published Travels in Palestine which described the first part of his voyage overland from Egypt to India in 1816-17 via Palestine, Syria and Mesopotamia. The Arab Tribes describes the portion of his journey from Nazareth to Aleppo and Damascus, and it also contains an appendix refuting the charges of plagiarism which were levelled against Travels in Palestine. Buckingham had been travelling extensively in the Middle East from about 1810 as a sea captain and merchant. After he settled in India he established the Calcutta Journal a publication critical of the East India Company. In 1819, in one of the early issues of this journal, he published an account, together with correspondence, of John Lewis Burckhardt whom he had met in Cairo during the winter of 1813-14. This was reprinted in Phillips' New Voyages and Travels, vol. 2, no. 3. In 1823 he was exiled from India, returned to England, and began a long suit for damages against the Company which he eventually won in 1834. His several books were written in an attempt to cover the expenses of these trials. -V. Blackmer-). ORIENTE

Small suite of work relating to the title-page vignette from the atlas accompanying the Freycinet official account

[Paris], 1825. Group of two small drawings and two printer's proofs, full details below; very good. Designing the vignette for Freycinet's atlas. An intriguing group, including an original sketch and two working pulls relating to the vignette ultimately printed on the title-page of the Freycinet hydrographic atlas. The beautifully developed scene shows a woman next to a broken anchor and shaded by a willow, next to a marble plinth with a quotation from Esmenard's poem La Navigation, originally composed for the loss of La Pérouse, and much admired by his contemporaries:Venez, amis des arts, que le marbre fidèleGage de nos regrets dans ces paisibles lieuxRappelle La Pérouse et le rende à nos yeux,Oui sous les coups du sort, quand pour nous il succombe,De larmes et de fleurs je couvrirai sa tombe. In the background of the scene a vessel heels over to starboard, its rigging wrecked, and clearly sinking. The scene is no doubt meant to bring to mind the loss of Freycinet's ship the Uranie in the Falklands, but also makes an obvious link with La Pérouse himself, the fate of whom, at the time of publication, was still unknown in France. The four items are:1. Fragment of tracing paper showing the anchor design, 50 x 115 mm., tipped onto paper.2. Pencil and ink sketch of the main components of the design, 205 x 215 mm., on Whatman paper dated 1821.3. Proof before letters (in the technical sense, but also before adding the inscription to the plinth as well as other graphic detail) on laid paper, 200 x 235 mm.4. Finished proof printed on india paper and laid on slightly larger laid sheet, 230 x 260 mm.Several years ago Hordern House sold a small working archive relating to the typographic design of the title-page of the Baudin voyage atlas, and the present group makes a fascinating counterpoint, underscoring the care and oversight that went into producing these official accounts of the grands voyages. Indeed it seems quite likely, given Freycinet's central role in the production of both the Baudin and Freycinet voyage atlases, that this small suite sheets back to him personally.
