- Vgl. Engelmann 107; Wegehaupt 877. - Die meisten Bände gering, einige stärker stockfleckig. Band 14 mehrfach gestempelt, Karte feuchtfleckig u. mit größeren Einrissen. Karte in Band 15 fehlt, die meisten Bände ohne Einzeltitel, einige ohne Reihentitel. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Flora of North America, illustrated by coloured figures drawn from nature

Vol. I: M. Carey & Sons; Vol. II & III: H.C. Carey & I. Lea, Philadelphia 1824 - (10 13/16 x 8 3/8 inches). 106 uncoloured engraved plates (1 folding), from drawings by the author, by Cornelius Tiebout (29), G.B. Ellis (32), F. Kearney (23), J. Boyd (7), J. Drayton (6), C. Goodman (6), Jacob J. Plocher (2), and J.L. Frederick (1). (Plate 80 in vol.II with contemporary replacement of inner margin. Contemporary red half morocco over green/blue paper-covered boards, the flat spines divided into five compartments by double gilt fillets, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth compartments. Provenance: Owen Mason (?of Rhode Island, 1796-1873, ownership inscriptions dated 1841 noting a purchase price of $8.00) Very rare uncoloured issue of an important American flora, "magnificently illustrated" (DAB) with "Plates [that] are clear, soft and lovely" (Bennett). The work includes the first successful use of stipple-engraving in the United States. This set includes the rare 'To Subscribers' leaf in Volume II. In addition to its significance as a botanical work, Barton's Flora. is also one of the most important early colour plate books entirely produced in the United States. "The plates were made by [among others] Cornelius Tiebout, the first really skilled engraver born in the United States, although he trained in London for two years in the 1790's to perfect his technique" (Reese). This uncoloured issue is particularly interesting as Barton states in the advertisement to the first volume that some of the "plates are printed in colour" - none of the plates in the present volume show any signs of colour and are therefore a variant issue of those used in the coloured version, and not merely plates that were not hand-coloured in this country. These may constitute early experimental issues of the plates - produced before the combination of colour-printing and hand-colouring was arrived at. The text gives details of each species, its Latin binomial, common name, and class and order according to the Linnaean system, followed by interesting information about the history of the discovery of the species and details about its geographical range. The present set is particularly desirable as it includes the rare "To Subscribers" leaf occasionally found in the second volume, it is here bound between pp. 42 and 43. It was issued as a pair to pp. 41/42 but is not included in the pagination and was designed to be discarded. Like many other works of its day, Barton's book was originally issued in parts, with the first parts appearing in 1820 and the final ones in 1824, hence the dates given above. Barton, the nephew of Benjamin Smith Barton, was appointed a naval surgeon in 1809 and remained on the Navy's list throughout his life (he was buried with full military honours in Philadelphia in 1856). "In 1815 Barton was chosen professor of botany at the University of Pennsylvania, charming many with his light-hearted herborizing trips along the Schuykill and his lectures which were, contrary to bookish times, demonstrated in his well-stocked conservatory" (DAB). His botanical publications, which appeared over a relatively short span of nine years, began with his Flora Philadelphicae prodromus (1815) and culminated with the present work (1820-24) and his Vegetable materia medica of the United States (1817-19). BM(NH) I, p.105; Bennett p. 9 (incorrect plate count); Dunthorne 26; Nissen BBI 84; MacPhail Benjamin Smith Barton and William Crillon Barton 19; Meisel III, p.385; Pritzel 446; Reese Stamped with a National Character 11; Sabin 3858; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 236.

N.p., n.pr., (1824). - Folio (28.8 x 18.8 cm.), disbound. Caption title. Overall in good to very good condition. Early manuscript foliation in ink. Broadside. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Imposes penalties for smuggling tobacco, foreign liquors, tea, and playing cards. Diego Portales (1793-1837), born into a prominent merchant family in Santiago, established Portales Céa y Compañía in 1821, with branches in Valparaiso and Lima. The company was granted a monopoly (@estanco) on trade in tobacco, tea, liquor, and playing cards, in return for which they serviced Chile's foreign debt. Unfortunately the government was unable effectively to control such trade, and the company went bankrupt. Its memory lingered in the name of Portales's conservative followers, known as @estanqueros.In the 1830s, Portales, as leader of the conservatives and a proponent of a strong central government, was the power behind the president. Since he was largely responsible for the Chilean Constitution of 1833, his political beliefs remained influential for another century.*** Not located in Briseño. Not located in CCPBE.         IN CONGRESS JULY 4th, 1776. THE UNANIMOUS DECLARATION OF THE THIRTEEN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

[Np, but Hartford, Ct.]: Eleazer Huntington, [ca. 1820-1824]. - Engraved broadside, 24 x 19 1/2 inches, printed on paper. A near fine copy. The Declaration of Independence, the foundation document of the United States, has been printed myriad times since its original publication in 1776. At first as broadsides, then as an essential addition to any volume of laws, it was from the beginning a basic work in the American canon. The present document is one of the earliest broadside reproductions of the Declaration, done within a few years of the first broadside republications. In the period following the War of 1812, Americans began to look back, for the first time with historical perspective, on the era of the founding of the country. The republic was now forty years old, and the generation of the American Revolution, including the signers of the Declaration, was dropping away. With nostalgia and curiosity, many Americans began to examine the details of the nation's founding. Among other things, such documents as the debates of the Constitutional Convention were published for the first time. It seems extraordinary that the Declaration of Independence, as created, was unknown to Americans, when the text was so central to the national ego. Several entrepreneurs set out to bridge this gap by printing reproductions of the document. The first to do so was a writing master named Benjamin Owen Tyler, who created a calligraphic version of the Declaration and published it in 1818, recreating exactly the signatures of the signers as they appeared on the original. Three other broadside printings of the Declaration were issued in 1818 and 1819, each containing ornamental borders or illustrations. These were followed in the early 1820s by the present printing by Hartford engraver and penmanship author Eleazer Huntington. Huntington followed Tyler's example by creating a calligraphic facsimile of the Declaration, but stripped out the ornaments and illustrations that had been added by previous publishers, returning the document to the simple title and text of the original, and providing the signatures of the signers in exact facsimile. According to John Bidwell's list, this is the sixth broadside reproduction of the Declaration of Independence. Bidwell locates only three copies of the Huntington printing of the Declaration, at the Huntington Library, Massachusetts Historical Society, and American Antiquarian Society. Rare, attractive, and important. John Bidwell, "American History in Image and Text" in PROCEEDINGS OF THE AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY, 1988, Vol. 98, pp.247-302 (also issued as a separate pamphlet by AAS), item 6.

Archive of material related to Daniel Dunscomb Bradford, of New York, New York, Consul at Paris, France, and a great-grandson of William Bradford, Pennsylvania's first printer, 1824-1838

Hardcover. Very Good. The archive includes: 16 letters, 45 manuscript pages, dated 1824-1838, with 11 manuscript pages of documents and papers, dated 1827-1836, plus 162 manuscript page genealogy book of the Bradford family, dated 1825; and a 76 page manuscript "Friendship Book" of Mary Ann Rodgers Bradford, c. 1828-1838. Daniel Dunscomb Bradford (1808-1837) Daniel Dunscomb Bradford was born on 14 May 1808, the son of Jacob Bradford (1771-1816) and Elisa Dunscomb, of New York City. He was baptized at Trinity Church, New York City. Daniel was the second great grandson of William Bradford (1658-1752), the first printer in Pennsylvania, and also the printer of the first book and newspaper in New York City. Daniel's father was first cousin to William Bradford (1755-1795), the second Attorney General of the United States (1794-1795). His grandfather Cornelius Bradford was the brother of the Revolutionary War printer William Bradford (1791-1791), the printer for the first Continental Congress. Daniel was one of five children, the other four being: Margaret D., Cornelius (died young), Cornelius (second of this name), and David Dickson. At the age of 19, Daniel, or "Dunscomb" as he was called, commenced studying law and was admitted to the practice of law in 1831. He sailed for Europe after visiting England and proceeded to France, where he was appointed the American Vice-Consul at Paris, which office he held until his death, in Paris, on 5 December 1837 at the age of thirty years old. While in Paris as Consul, Dunscomb was one of two non-family members present during the burial of General Lafayette in 1834. Bradford was also appointed the secretary of a committee of Americans in Paris who organized an appropriate expression of sorrow by the American people for Lafayette's death. David Dickson Bradford (1806-?), brother of Daniel Dunscomb, married Mary Ann Rogers, daughter of Dr. George Rogers of New York City, by whom he had at least three children: Margaret Gage, George Rogers, and Mary Elizabeth. David Dickson Bradford became a seaman, and eventually captain of his own vessel. Correspondence: 11 letters (34 pp.) of Daniel Dunscomb Bradford, written to his brother, sea captain David Dickson Bradford, and his sister-in-law Mary Ann Bradford, dated New York and Paris, 29 October 1828 - 6 April 1836. One of the letters is incomplete, and two others are torn, with loss of text, with general browning, and wear. These letters mainly concern family matters, though bigger issues do intrude. In one letter (2 Jan. 1830), Dunscomb breaks the news of Cornelius Bradford's death in Jerusalem, a later letter congratulates Dickson on his forthcoming marriage, another discusses the welfare of their mother, another writes of the family fortune, or rather the lack thereof, and their careers and aspirations such as sea-captain employment possibilities for Dickson, etc. Dunscomb Bradford enjoyed writing on such subjects as how to behave as a gentleman and how to be happy in love and marriage. Dunscomb Bradford took his brother Cornelius Bradford's place as Consul in Paris on the latter's death in August 1830. Dunscomb too died young, on 5 December 1837, and was buried in Pére Lachaise. 5 miscellaneous letters (11 pp.) include: 1 letter of Capt. E.M. Donaldson to David Dickson Bradford, dated Philadelphia 22 May 1824, discussing travel plans for "Mrs. Hall" and "the children." 1 letter copy of David Dickson Bradford to his brother Dunscomb Bradford, dated New York 24 February 1833; 1 letter of David Dickson Bradford to his wife Mary dated 5 March 1834. 2 letters of Robert Dumont to David Dickson Bradford, dated New York 3 Sept. 1836 and 16 Jan. 1838, the latter written at the request of Bradford's mother, informing Dickson of the death of his brother Dunscomb in Paris. The correspondence generally soiled, browned, and worn. Some sheets torn at wax seals, etc. But it is in generally good legible con

Compilate...dell'Avvocato Filippo Maria Renazzi. Finely engraved frontis. port. of Zabaglia (margins a little foxed), engraved vignettes on Italian & Latin titles, a large engraved headpiece, & 62 fine engraved plates (ten are folding). 4 p.l., xxix, [1], 46, [4], 48 pp. Text in both Italian and Latin. Large folio (505 x 375 mm.), fine Roman green sheep maroquiné with covers richly gilt in a panel design (a few scuff marks & defects), flat spine richly gilt (ends of spine a little worn), probably bound by the "Pope Gregory XVI binder." Rome: C. Puccinelli, 1824. Second edition, with important additions, of this finely illustrated engineering book. The first edition appeared in 1743. Zabaglia (1664-1750), "master mason of the Fabric of St. Peter's," was one of the foremost engineers and mechanics of his time. He was responsible for the maintenance of St. Peter's in Rome and designed the scaffolding and other devices used for its decoration and repair. The scaffolds -- both ground and suspension -- were extraordinary temporary structures designed to support, at the great heights of the basilica, the workers, equipment, materials, and machines necessary for restoration works, mosaic and painting decorations, the installation of statues, as well as for placing the iron hoops in the dome to stabilize cracks. Zabaglia made important advances in the technique used to graft and join wooden beams to assemble very large scaffolds and machines. He also founded a "School of Practical Mechanics." The handsome plates in this work depict Zabaglia's inventions including hoists, lifting machines, various kinds of scaffolds, machinery, tools, mosaics, artists at work, men working in a quarry, the transportation of marble and stone, the transportation and lifting of the Vatican obelisk by Fontana in the late 16th century, Zabaglia's transportation of the great obelisk of Augustus, etc. Our edition is enriched by eight new plates depicting the scaffolds made by Zabaglia's most skillful pupils, including Pietro Albertini and Angelo Paraccini. Added is a biography of Zabaglia with a detailed account of his other engineering achievements. A most handsome copy, finely bound. ❧ Dibner, Moving the Obelisks (1991). For the binder , see Cat. della Mostra Legature papali da Eugenio IV a Paolo VI (Rome: 1977), no. 284, tav. 204. .

Draft of a Letter to the Catholic Association in Bentham's Hand.

1824. Draft of an Unsent Letter by Jeremy Bentham [Bentham, Jeremy (1748-1832)]. [Draft of a Letter to the Catholic Association in Bentham's Hand]. [London]: December 9, 1824. 12-1/2" x 8" leaf removed from ledger (or notebook), ruled in red, more than 60 lines of text in ink with extensive editing, cross-outs and amendments. Autograph note by John Bowring at head of leaf reading: "JB to the Catholic Association Not sent", 9 December 1824. Fold lines, light toning. * The text begins, as amended: "For the Catholic Rents. After the example set by The Examiner. Five pound from Jeremy Bentham in the humble and cordial wish that his oppressed brethren of the Catholic persuasion will neither retaliate persecution by persecution, nor attempt redress by insurrection, but unite with the liberal among Protestants for the attainment of security for all, against depredation and oppression in every shape, by the only practicable means - Parliamentary reform, in the radical and solely efficient mode .....". This is followed by a long section, amounting to more than half the text, that is crossed out (but legible). The note by Bowring isn't entirely accurate. This letter was sent, but it did not contain the deleted text in the present manuscript draft. In his edition of Bentham's correspondence, Bowring noted at the end of his transcription that he had persuaded Bentham to suppress the text deleted. However, Bowring retained a copy of it and it is printed in full in The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham (2006) 12:73. The Catholic Association, formed by Daniel O'Connell (himself a close friend of Bentham), collected money, known as the Catholic Rent, to defray the costs of publishing and petitioning for the removal of the political disabilities imposed on Roman Catholics. Bentham's contribution of ?5 was noted in the issue of The Examiner for 26 December 1824. The Examiner was a weekly newspaper found by Leigh and John Hunt in 1808 and for some years was a leading intellectual journal promoting radical principles. Bowring [1792-1872] was Bentham's executor and editor. Also a notable political economist and linguist, he was the fourth Governor of Hong Kong.

Bell'esemplare a pieni margini (29,3 x 22 cm), minime fioriture. Einaudi 1562. Kress, Italian, 865. Fornari M. 674 - 683 e 689 - 703. In 1831 the plates for the atlas were sold to S. Augustus Mitchell, who revised the maps and brought out a new edition that year. Mitchell continued to issue the maps separately in pocket form until about 1850. Not in Phillips. RUMSEY 2587.

Letters From North America Written During a Tour In the United States And Canada

London: Hurst, Robinson, & Co.and A. Constable & Co., 1824. First Edition. Both volumes of this two volume set are in very good+ condition in 3/4 leather (calf) and marbled paper covered boards with gilt text and rules on the spines. Both volumes are octavos measuring 8 1/2" by 5 1/8" with rubbing and light wear to the leather around the tips of the boards, at the head and heel of the spines and at the joints. Volume I contains a preface followed by 405 pages which includes an errata on page 405. It is illustrated with a frontispiece map. Volume II contains a fold-out, frontispiece map, 459 pages followed by a tipped-in errata and is illustrated with the aforementioned frontispiece and several engravings of Native American implements and ornaments on pages 442 and 443. With the exception of offsetting from the frontispieces and engravings there is no foxing or tanning present within these two volumes. This is the more complete and revised edition of Hodgson's letters. The earlier version was printed in New York in 1823 and strips much from its content. The author spent eight months traveling through out the eastern states of the US. In the process he wrote 44 letters which are published in these volumes. He arrived in New York City and traveled to Washington DC, Richmond, Norfolk, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Lumberton, Charleston, Savannah, Augusta, Mobile, New Orleans, Natchez, Greenville, Huntsville, Lookout Mountain, Knoxville, visited Jefferson at Monticello, Baltimore, parts of New England and Philadelphia. His main areas of interest were slavery, which he abhorred, and Indian culture, where he had a great interest. Howes considers this set as "quite scarce" and provides "Unbiased observations."         Rosa Damascena Variegata. Rosier d'York et de Lancastre

[Paris: Firmin Didot], 1824. Stipple engraving printed in black, on ochre-tinted paper, by Bessin, after Redouté, printed by Rémond. Very good condition. A very rare uncoloured 'connoisseur's' impression on ochre-tinted paper from the first edition of 'Les Roses': Redouté's most famous work, and perhaps the most celebrated flower book of all time The present uncoloured plate was printed on ochre paper as it was realized that this gave a pleasing effect. The ochre background enhances the subtle gradations of tone achieved using the stipple engraving technique and gives a unique opportunity to appreciate the unrivalled artistry of both Pierre-Joseph Redouté himself and the master-craftsman he employed to translate his watercolour into a print of the highest quality. Redouté learned, whilst on a visit to London, that the most successful impressions of stipple engravings came from well-used plates. A number of black plates would thus be struck to take the edge off the plate before printing in colours. Redouté's printers struck black impressions - always on a paper with a distinct ochre tint - from the plates, and these early impressions were then combined with later colour-printed examples to form the de luxe issues of 'Les Roses'. Redouté's 'Les Roses' was issued in four formats: a large paper folio with coloured plates, a large paper folio with the plates in two states, folio with coloured plates, and folio with the plates in two states (the present plate comes from this final de luxe form). Gavin Bridson and Donald Wendel, in their magisterial 'Printmaking in the service of botany' catalogue (Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, 1986, item 25) noted that Redouté 'For the interest of connoisseurs' included `a set of black plates as a parallel series to the usual color-printed versions' in 'special issues' of both the present work and his earlier 'Les Liliacées'. The number of these special issues that were produced is unfortunately not recorded but to judge from auction records over the past twenty-five years they are extremely rare: only four complete sets of 'Les Roses' in this format are recorded. The present print therefore comes from an edition that was severely limited, and is certainly much rarer than its colour-printed equivalent. Cf. Cleveland Collections 807; cf. Dunthorne 232; cf. Hunt Redoutéana 19; cf. Hunt, Printmaking in the Service of Botany 25; cf. Nissen BBI 1599; cf. Pritzel 7455; cf. Ray French 89; cf. Stafleu and Cowan 8748.

Remember Me! A New Years Gift or Christmas Present, 1825.

      - London: I. Poole, [1824]. Small 8vo, xxiv, 372 pp. With an engraved frontispiece, 4 full-page engravings including one by Blake, 8 hand-colored botanical plates, 8 plates of engraved music, and a calendar with an engraved title-page and 6 plates. Publisher's de luxe original full brown polished calf, covers panelled in gilt, backstrip richly gilt-panelled with the binder's name at the foot of the spine "Purgold", slightly worn, occasional small spots on plates as usual, a very good copy of the de luxe issue. First edition of one of the rarest of all of the plates designed and engraved by Blake. The title exists in three states: dated 1825, dated 1826, and with the date on the title removed -- only one other copy thus is known. Three copies in all have been sold in the last 30 years: Sotheby's Belgravia, 3 Feb. 1976, lot 3, Sotheby's London, 6 June 1991, lot 97, and a copy sold privately by Maggs Bros. to Robert N. Essick replacing this copy from Essick purchased at the 1976 sale. The plate, titled 'The Hiding of Moses' was the last plate designed and engraved by Blake himself for a commercial publication; the original drawing 'Moses placed in the Ark of Bulrushes', which closely echoes a tempera now untraced that was executed some 25 years earlier, is in the Huntington Library. BB #490A. Easson and Essick, William Blake Book Illustrator, XI (recording the Rosenwald proof and 3 copies). Bentley (in the U of T Quarterly 2011) noted: "The gift book Remember Me! with Blake's wonderful engraving of the 'Hiding of Moses' was more remarkable for its decorations than for its literary contents. Of the twenty-four copies recorded, each differs from the others in the pattern of binding, colour of fore-edges, endpapers, and the decorated sleeve-case. Despite this varied elegance, the work had only a modest sale, and the same sheets were re-issued in 1825 for the 1826 gift-giving season. This paucity of sales may be related to the fact that the publisher John Poole had little experience of book distribution. His speciality was as a maker of Marble Paper and Fancy Pocket-Books, not in selling them." [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
