Monandrian plants ... chiefly drawn from living specimens in the Botanic Garden at Liverpool.

Liverpool, George Smith, [1824-] 1828. Folio (550 x 425mm). With 112 hand-coloured lithographed plates. Contemporary full dark green morocco, large floral gilt device on front- and back cover, blind tooled borders, gilt lettered spine in 7 compartments (some repair to spine). First edition of this beautiful work, one of 150 copies printed. It is devoted to plants of the Monandrian class of Linnaeus, and contains Roscoe's proposal of a new taxonomic arrangement of these plants. The plates were probably lithographed by Hullmandel, from drawings by Thomas Allport and others; according to the preface, which lists all the artists involved, they were 'engraved [sic] and coloured under the supervision of George Graves jr'. Roscoe was a wealthy Liverpool banker and the founder of the Botanic Garden there. "Roscoe's 'magnum opus' was prepared late in his life, when he had suffered from several strokes, and is the book by which he is most widely known among botanists. It is remarkable for several reasons. First, it provided illustrations of 112 different species and varieties, never before assembled in a single work. Secondly, it used lithography, a new method for reproducing the illustrations that was just starting to be adopted in Britain. Thirdly, it was an early attempt to impose a 'natural system' of classification on a group that had traditionally been regarded as an artificial assemblage defined by a single Linnaean character: the flower's solitary anther" (J. Edmondson, William Roscoe and Liverpool's first Botanical Garden p. 11). An unusually clean copy without foxing, one plate with a marginal repair. Dunthorne 267; Nissen BBI, 1677; Great Flower Books p. 74; Johnston 948; Stafleu and Cowan 9505.

The Dangerous Voyage Performed By Captain Bligh, with a part of the crew of His Majesty's Ship Bounty, in an open boat, Over Twelve Hundred Leagues of the Ocean; in the year 1789. To Which is added, an Account of the Sufferings and Fate of the Remainder of the Crew of said Ship

      R. Napper 140 Capel St. Dublin:: R. Napper, 140 Capel-St.,. 1824.. An anonymous chapbook account of the mutiny on the Bounty and in particular, Bligh's historic open boat voyage from the Pacific to Batavia via the Torres Strait. The work is uncommon, although it was 1st published in 1817, it is rare in any edition, this one in Dublin. According to the Kroepelien catalogue, this is a new and revised edition, not only because the entire appendix is omitted, but also because the 'compilation dealing with Bligh's voyage has been considerably extended'. Ferguson records only four copies in Australian collections. Ferguson, 936; Kroepelien, 103; Spence, 'Bligh', p. 6; Hill, 138 (1822 edition). 12mo, 175pp, woodcut frontispiece of the Bounty launch in high seas, a trifle thumbed at the beginning, text block in very good condition. Original full calf somewhat rubbed, hinges starting but secure.A pleasant period copy of a hard-to-find Bligh gem

Journal of a Second Voyage for the Discovery of a North-West Passage From the Atlantic to the Pacific Performed in the Years 1821-22-23

Marbled paper over boards, half bound in leather, title tooled in gilt onto six compartment spine, all edges trimmed, leather headbands, 4to (10-1/2 x 8 inches [26.7 x 20.4 cm]) pp. xxx, 571, eratta, 4 fold-out charts and 4 numbered fold-out views "Appearances of Lands" bound at rear, 31 plates [inc. frontis], 5 of which are maps. Maps and plates not included in pagination, whereas all tables are. Collated, complete and tightly bound. Stain to spine leather, rubbing to boards, light offset and browning to some foldout maps and views, occasional foxing, discoloration and slight wave to pages. Crack in front hinge near the binders twine used to sew down front endpaper - as per book binding methods of the time where "...until the early years of the nineteenth century all endpapers, were sewn on, and never merely tipped on with paste as they sometimes are today." [Middleton, 4th edition, p. 108-111]. Sent by the Admiralty to search for a passage along the west coast of Foxe Basin, Parry sailed north of Southampton Island instead of south, the route preferred by previous navigators, and thus became the first to sail through Frozen Strait and confirmed Middleton's discovery of Repulse Bay. In late Aug. having found no passage through Repulse Bay, he explored the coast northward, sailing as far as Ross Bay. In Feb. 1822, Eskimos visited the ships' winter quarters on Winter Island and spent much of the winter in the expedition's company, enabling Parry and his men to make detailed observations on their customs and language. After leaving their winter quarters, they explored farther north equiped with Eskimo maps (ESKIMAUX CHART No 1, No 2 & No 3, facing p. 197, 198 and 252) and found the entrance to Fury and Hecla Strait. Ice prevented their passing through it, but overland journeys confirmed that it led westward to a sea. Parry returned to winter quarters and attempted to sail through Fury and Hecla Strait the following summer. Unsuccesful in this attempt, and fearing scurvy, he then returned home. Ref. Lande, 1385; Cooke/Holland, p 147; Sabin 58864.

It covers voyages from the time of King Alfred in the middle ages, to the expeditions of Cooke in the 1770s. "The distinguishing feature of this collection is that it is devoted to voyages and travels of discovery, wherein the boundaries of geographical knowledge were enlarged. It consequently contains all the early expeditions to America and the Pacific in extenso. The eighteenth volume is a history of the progress of maritime and inland discovery, with a bibliographical catalogue of voyages and travels, by William Stevenson; which is a work of great value, and being published at a later time is frequently wanted."         De l'influence des agents physiques sur la vie

Crochard Paris: Crochard, 1824. 1st edition. Pioneer Work on Animal Ecology EDWARDS, William F. (1776-1842). De líinfluence des agents physiques sur la vie. 8vo. xvi, 1 leaf, 654 pp., errata leaf. One folding lithographed plate containing multiple figures. Contemporary tree calf, gilt spine with red morocco label. Lower cover rubbed but a fine copy. Paris: Crochard, 1824.FIRST EDITION. Garrison-Morton 1991. Born in Jamaica, the son of a wealthy English planter, Edwards moved with his family to Bruges where he completed his medical training at the age of 34. He then worked with the celebrated physiologist Magendie who in his Precis Èlementaire de physiologie (1816-17) acknowledged Edwardsí constant assistance in his experiments and in the preparation of the book.Edwards became interested in the influence of environmental factors on animal life and published the results of his researches in the above book, which is a pioneer work in the history of animal ecology."His main idea was that vital processes depend on external physical and chemical forces but are not entirely controlled by them. Life is different from heat, light, or electricity, forces which, however, contribute to the production of vital phenomena. Edwards systematically examined all principal functions, mostly of vertebrate species; and by varying the external conditions, he determined the nature and degree of their modification. Among the phenomena studied were the minimum and maximum temperatures compatible with life; heat production in young and adult animals; resistance of young animals to cold and to lack of oxygen; the importance of humidity, pressure, and movement of air in the loss of heat by transpiration; the role of light in the development of batrachians; and expiration of carbon dioxide by animals deprived of oxygen. Important was his finding that some warm-blooded animals (carnivores, rodents, some birds) are born less developed and have a much smaller capacity for heat production than those not born helpless" (DSB).

Autograph letter signed to Samuel H. Christie

Paris, 1824. Ampère, André Marie (1775-1836). Autograph letter signed to [Samuel Hunter] Christie (1784-1865). Paris, 14 July 1824. 1 page. 225 x 175 mm. Light marginal staining, lacuna from ink oxidation affecting one word. From Ampère, founder of the science of electrodynamics, to British mathematician and physicist Samuel Hunter Christie, who performed important research on terrestrial and other forms of magnetism:"Depuis que vous m'avez fait l'honneur de m'envoyer votre excellent mémoire sur le sujet de physique sur lequel nous travaillons particulièrement tous deux, je désirais vivement trouver une occasion pour vous envoyer un des 3 ou 4 exemplaires qui me reste de mon ouvrage sur ce sujet dont l'édition est épuisée. . . .Je joins à mon recueil une petite brochure qui en est extraite et qui est l'exposé rapide de tous les faits découverts relativement à l'électricité dynamique."[Ever since you did me the honor of sending me your excellent memoir on the subject of physics on which we are both particularly working, I have wanted very much to find an occasion to send you one of my 3 or 4 remaining copies of my work on this subject, which is out of print. . . . I add to my work a small pamphlet extracted from it, which is a brief summary of all the discoveries relating to electrodynamics.]The "ouvrage" Ampère referred to here was his Recueil d'observations électro-dynamiques (1823), representing "the most complete single summary of his accomplishments to that date" (Hofmann, p. 321); the work included observations on terrestrial magnetism. The "petite brochure" was Ampère's Précis de la théorie des phénomènes électro-dynamiques pour servir de supplément au "Recueil d'observations électro-dynamiques" (1824). Ampère, whose scientific creativity far exceeded his powers of organization, was in the habit of issuing numerous revisions, additions and explanations to his previously published works; the Précis is an example of this practice. Ampère sent these two publications to Christie via his friend Baron Jean-Frédéric Maurice (1775-1851), a Swiss-born mathematician and astronomer.Samuel Hunter Christie, Ampère's correspondent, is best known for inventing a forerunner of the "Wheatstone bridge" method for comparing the resistances of wires of different thicknesses, published in the Philosophical Transactions in 1833. At the time of Ampère's letter Christie had published two works, Observations on Magnetic Attractions (1821) and On the Diurnal Deviations of the Horizontal Needle when under the Influence of Magnets (1823). We do not know which one of these he presented to Ampère. Hofmann, André-Marie Ampère (1995).

Sv. Nilssons Skandinaviska fauna. [=rubrik]. Lund, Berlingska boktryckeriet, 1824. 4:o. (2) s. "About 1820 the Navy Board was anxious to find the reason why copper sometimes got fouled, whilst iron was dissolving, and at other times the copper was dissolving rather too quickly. A Committee was formed with the Royal Society, of which Sir Humphry Davy was President. Davy had already in 1806 advanced the hypothesis that chemical and electrical charges may be identical, and later convinced Berzelius of this idea. Now, assisted by Michael Faraday, he began to experiment with copper and other metals, such as iron and zinc in various saline solutions, and found the electrochemical reactions he had expected. Sir Humphry Davy advocated a small quantity of zinc, or of even cheaper malleable iron, should be placed in contact with copper, and thereby prevent its corrosion. In 1825 Davy was able to move away from the laboratory tests and continue his research aboard a naval vessel. Davy found that small "protectors" of malleable iron preserved the copper by the iron gradually dissolving in a galvanic process. (Source: "On the corrosion of copper sheeting by seawater, and on methods of preventing this effect, and on their application to ships of war and other ships". Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 114 (1824), pp 151-246 and 115 (1825), pp 328-346.) Here is a detailed account of the events surrounding this important work from a recent biography written by Sir Harold Hartley: "In 1823 the Commissioners of the Navy Board consulted Davy about the rapid decay of the copper sheathing of his Majesty's ships of war. A Committee of the Royal Society was appointed to consider the problem and Davy started to investigate it experimentally. He first showed that the corrosion was independent of small impurities in the copper and then, after examining the products of corrosion, he decided that it must depend on the oxygen dissolved in the sea water. Experiments having verified this conclusion, it occurred to him, in the light of his early researches, that he might prevent the oxidation of the copper by changing its electrical condition so as to make it slightly negative. It was not possible to do this in ships with a voltaic battery but it might be done by contact with zinc, tin or iron. Laboratory experiments with zinc and iron in sea water gave perfect protection and large-scale trials gave similar results, so that the problem seemed to be solved..."

With the 2 pull out plates of the Menai & Conway bridges. There was a second edition printed in 1828,. Mentioned in Allibone 2447. An odd production!
