The History of English Poetry from the Close of the Eleventh to the Commencement of the Eighteenth Century

Printed for Thomas Tegg, London 1824 - Four octavo volumes in the publisher's blue-grey paper-covered boards with cloth spines and paper spine lables. Complete with the engraved frontis of Thomas Warton. Staining along spine edge indicates some type of repair to the spine, but no cloth added, not rebacked, recased or otherwise muddled by restoration. Paper worn from board edges and spine cloth chipped at extremities, but internal contents are generally attractive. Warton's work on English Poetry, originally published 1774 - 1781, was quite valuable to the academic community, but Price's editorial notations in the second edition are quite phenomenal. He discusses the importance of Beowulf at length and highlights a few of the alliterative poems contained in M.S. Cott. Nero A.x. This is the first publication of any work from this manuscript, which includes: "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," "Pearl," "Cleanness," and "Patience." All works are attributed to the same author, although still anonymous, it is generally agreed that his late fourteenth century verse is some of the most important from the era.

LETTERS WRITTEN FROM COLOMBIA, DURING A JOURNEY FROM CARACAS TO BOGOTA, AND THENCE TO SANTA MARTHA, IN 1823.

London: G. Cowie, . 1824 - xvi,208pp. plus one folding map. Three-quarter calf, rebacked, leather label stamped in gilt. Map in very fine condition. Minor occasional stains in text. Very good. Published anonymously but attributed by the British Museum to John Hankshaw, while THE ECONOMIC LITERATURE OF LATIN AMERICA, Palau and OCLC assign authorship to Francis Hall. The more that rich and beautiful country becomes known, the greater will be the interest excited towards it among all Europeans. So extensive a field for the exercise of European industry and intelligence has not for ages presented itself." A travel journal composed in the form of letters, the author describes the landscape, the inhabitants, the climate and soil, natural resources, commodities, government, and the possibilities for commerce. The highly detailed map of Greater Colombia is "taken from Humboldt and various other recent authorities." ALBERICH 1336. NAYLOR 85. SABIN 14598. PALAU 112082.

(a. d. Br. v. 4. X.). - Die Daten der einzelnen Briefe: I) 4. X. - II) 25. X. - III) 17. XI. - IV) 13. XII. Alle Briefe links oben mit späterer Numerierung. - Beiliegend ein eh. Briefkonzept mit U. von P. A. Wolff (dat. 8. Rosa Gallica Pontiana

Firmin Didot], [Paris 1824 - More than with any other painter, Redouté's flowers are alive, and always shown at the ephemeral moment of their greatest beauty. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre Italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually to Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full-time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's scientific understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Roses from which this work comes. Redouté together with Claude-Antoine Thory, an ardent botanist and collector of roses, have together in Les Roses produced a work not only of great artistic merit, but also an invaluable scientific record as well. `Redouté and Thory knew, described and figured almost all the important roses known in their day. Included were many of the key ancestors of our present-day roses. The plates in Les Roses have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for the species and cultivars still surviving and for those that have disappeared' (Gisele de la Roche). The roses used as specimens for the work were taken from the collections of Thory, the Malmaison gardens, and from other collections around Paris. Many of the flowers were novelties in Redouté's time, and a number were dedicated to the memory of his friends and acquaintances, such as l'Héritier de Brutelle and Ventenat. Cf. Cleveland Collections 807; cf. Dunthorne p 232; cf. Great Flower Books (1990), p 128; cf. Nissen BBI 1599; cf. Pritzel 7455; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8748. Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, engraved by Langlois. Trimmed within platemark top and sides, not affecting image or titles.

Delectus Sententiarum Graecarum, usum tironum accommodatus.

Valpy, London 1824 - Duodecimo, owner's inscription on title-page and front free endpaper; some wear and loss, but a good copy in original plain roan binding. Early Australian schoolbook. A charming relic of early Australian education. This classical Greek textbook in its seventh edition, is in its original colonial binding and was originally owned by William Howe, member of a prominent Australian family. It is inscribed in ink "William Howe, King's School Parramatta March 15th 1852". William Howe senior arrived in New South Wales in 1816, and by 1820 was a magistrate. He had eight sons and two daughters. The King's School was founded in 1832 for the children of the colonial elite. It was customary for the young to receive a classical education that included Latin and Greek, and this text was obviously still in use almost thirty years after publication.

LI, pp. 342-347). ¿This is the best documented early account of what was probably multiple sclerosis that I have encountered.¿ (Spillane). P.
