The large and fine library formed by Paignon-Dijonval (1708-92), was inherited by his grandson, Morel-Vindé, who made important additions to it. Morel-Vindé (1759-1842), the author of the Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme et du Citoyen (1790), was active as an agronomist. He served as a member of Parlement and became Pair de France in 1815; Louis XVIII created him baron and vicomte. This library of 3216 lots contained books and manuscripts of the highest quality. The most expensive item of the sale was lot 71, a 15th-century Breviary from the La Vallière sale with 41 miniatures, some in grisaille (1600 francs to Crozet). The library was quite rich in the sciences, including, quite predictably, agriculture. Fine copy. Pages 455-85 contain an extremely useful author index and, even better, an index of anonymous works. ? Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, col. 498-"Collection fort importante."       Bleistiftzeichnung, unten rechts in Bleistift bezeichnet. Quadriert, um 1823, 18,5 x 28,5 cm. Vgl. - Vgl.         Primrose and Foal

London: Published by Rudolph Ackermann and Rodwell & Martin and printed by Charles Hullmandell, 1823. Lithograph. State iii/iii. In good condition with the exception of some skillfully rendered repairs in the margins. A striking print of the Duke of Grafton's horse Primrose, by the celebrated animal painter James Ward. This is a marvelous print of the Duke of Grafton's horse Primrose with her foal, from a series of 14 throughbred horses executed by Ward. James Ward was one of the most noted artists of his day, his individual style and superior skill distinguished him from his contemporaries, and his outstanding work influenced the development of British art. Considered to be one of the most important animal painters of his generation, Ward also produced portraits, landscapes, genre and history paintings. He began his career as an engraver, studying under his brother William, who later went on to engrave many of his paintings. The images produced from the pairing of William and James Ward epitomize the best of English art; their fine technical skill and inspired artistic imagination combine to create enduring pictures that speak of the taste and beauty of the age. The work of James Ward is worthy of history's praise; it influenced the art of Delacroix and Géricault, and changed the face of British painting.C.R.

        Armenian girl.

Second half of XIX c. - Charcoal and colored pencils on paper (29.5 x 19.8 cm), signed in left lower corner, laid on thicker contemporary paper, mounted, stamp "Coll. SB" to mount Good condition. A fine portrait of a young Armenian girl by the famed Russian artist. Féodor Petrovich Tchoumakoff (1823 - 1911) was born in St. Petersburg and was trained first at the St. Petersburg Theatre Arts Academy, and later at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. The works he did during his studies earned high recognition from Karl Brüllov. After successfully graduating from the academy, he received a chance to take a study trip to Italy. In 1852 he was given an honorary academic title. Starting in 1857, Tchoumakoff lived and worked primarily in Paris. He exhibited at salon shows in Paris, while also sending his works to exhibitions at the St. Petersburg Academy of the Arts. Tchoumakoff was a fairly popular artist in the aristocratic circles of France and Russia. His works were purchased by, for example, the government of France and Czar Aleksander II. In 1866 the czar bestowed the Order of St. Anna III class on Tchoumakoff for the painting "The Saviour and the Rich Man", which he had purchased. Tchoumakoff worked in different techniques and genres: historical, genre scenes from life, portraits. Beginning in 1870 the artist primarily painted "little heads" ("golovki"), which bought Tchoumakoff fame as the "Russian Greuze" (French artist J.-B. Greuze, 1725-1805). Tchoumakoff's works can be found in the State Russian Museum, Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery, and in many other Russian and European museums as well as private collections. The drawing comes from a private collection of Sarkis Boghossian and was published in his monumental work "Armenian Iconography" that gathers ____ prints and drawings on the subject. Boghossian's biography resembles a plot of a thriller. Having been born in 1921 in a small Armenian village in today's Turkey, he was taken to Marseille at the age of six by his family that fled famine and oppression. Passionate about art, poetry and Armenian culture, Boghossian chose a career of bookseller. In 1967 he opened a rare bookshop in Paris, "Le XIXe siècle", specialising in rare books and engravings related to Armenia. In 1998 the French booksellers' community was shocked waking up to the news that Boghossian was found dead in his Parisian flat, tortured and murdered, with a number of valuable books missing from his apartment. Police quickly traced the murdered, who, however, hardly resembled the idea one may have of an assassin. He was a French bookseller of Turkish origin and a renowned scholar with a PhD from Sorbonne specialising in Ottoman and Armenian history. He was apparently in dispute with Boghossian over a number of rare books that the latter kept as a guarantee against a cash loan. The bookseller was arrested and subsequently sentenced to 19 years in prison just when he was due to give a lecture at a conference in Nice titled "The Armenian merchants in the Mediterranean in the eighteenth century". Sarkis Boghossian "Armenian Iconography I" reproduces No. 563 p.404 - Paris, 1987. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

498-"Collection fort importante." N.B.G., Vol. 36, cols. 528-29.

        German Popular Stories

      C. Baldwyn and James Robins and Co: London, 1823. 2 vols 8vo. The first English edition of both volumes of Grimm's famous collection of fairy tales, representing an important literary landmark and also featuring some of the best work of the most famous illustrator of the nineteenth century, George Cruikshank. Volume one is the correct first issue, with no umlaut above "Marchen". The books are bound in recent straight grain black morocco, with gilt lettering and tooling, marbled endpapers, al edges gilt. Very slight foxing and toning here and there with humb marks to some leaves, the illustrated pages have suffered more from browning and foxing in volume one, a couple of neat professional repairs, slight offsetting to plate facing pages in Vol. II. Volume one is lacking the half title, half title present in volume II. A smart, attractive set of a work that forms the very foundation of everything we know and expect from a folk tale; includes the usual suspects in their earliest collected forms: Hansel and Grethel, The Frog Prince, Rumplestiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel. Ruskin said of this edition: "If you ever happen to meet with the two volumes of "Grimm's German Stories" which were illustrated by him long ago, pounce on them instantly; the etchings in them are the finest things, next to Rembrandt's, that, as far as I know, have been done since etching was invented." .

        Slaves. WITH: Slave Population

1823 - (SLAVERY) (PARLIAMENT). Slaves. Papers Presented Pursuant to Address; viz. Acts of Colonial Legislatures for Registry of Slaves. Ordered, by the House of Commons, to be Printed, 27 February 1823. WITH: Slave Population. Papers and Returns, Presented Pursuant to Address, Relating to the Slave Population of Dominca, Grenada, St. Vincent, Barbadoes, Antigua, Tobago, Demerara, Berbice, St. Christopher, Trinidad, and Mauritius. Ordered, by the House of Commons, to be Printed, 4 March 1823. (London): House of Commons, 1823. Two volumes. Folio, period-style three-quarter dark blue morocco, marbled boards and endpapers, uncut. $5500.Rare 1823 Parliamentary acts and colonial reports on slavery in the British colonies of the Caribbean, two exceptional volumes of laws and papers, printed by order of the House of Commons in February and in March 1823, providing precise documentation on the taxation, commerce and legal governance of slavery, and an implicit, sometimes chilling record of its human misery."In the century and a half of the slave trade". between three and four million Africans were transported out of their homelands to the New World in British ships". it was the single largest abduction in human history." By the early 1800s, "the British Empire was, overwhelmingly, an empire of soldiers and". nearly a million Caribbean slaves" (Schama II:416, 405). Following passage of the 1807 Act for the Abolition of the British Slave Trade, most British colonies in the Caribbean established registries to monitor legally held slaves. Subsequently, abolitionists such as William Wilberforce argued in Parliament for "a bill relative to the registry and regulation of slaves," hoping to expose the planters' continuing inhumane treatment, but opposition denounced this "interference with the local legislation of the colonies" (Annual Register, 1816). After long debate, the 1819 Slave Registration Act was passed, requiring a central record of any commercial transaction or transport between islands involving slaves to be sent to the London registry. Subsequently the Colonial Secretary issued additional instructions to its governors, whose effect is seen in these two rare volumes, ordered by the House of Commons in February and March of 1823. Volume I contains "copies of all ACTS of the Colonial Legislatures, and, also, of all Orders, Proclamations, or other Regulations, for establishing the Registration of Slaves in His Majesty's Foreign Settlements," along with certain laws enacted by the Dutch (A2), including laws passed in the Bahamas, Barbados and other colonies from 1816-23. Volume II contains reports on "the number of Slaves imported under licenses, or otherwise, since the 1st of January 1808". together with the places from which they were brought" (A2), as submitted to Downing Street from Grenada, Barbados, Antigua, Trinidad and elsewhere. Included are "Papers and Returns" on the taxation and legal sale of slaves, their births, baptisms, marriages and burials, and a record of free slaves and runaways. Also noted are executions, such as that of one slave "for the murder of his mistress" and the sale of another to pay for expenses at the inquest (C3). Similar reporting continued until the abolishment of slavery in 1834. OCLC lists no copies. See Harvard Law Catalog, 300. Light dampstaining and small closed tears to gutter of title pages and some leaves, without affecting text. A very nearly fine collection central to the history of slavery, in two handsomely bound volumes. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
