VIII-379 pp. Paris, F.G. DSB VI-554. Ward & Carozzi, n°1136. Poggendorff I, 1158.

Semelaigne I, p. 188 et suiv.

Map of the County of Surrey, from an actual Survey made in the Years 1822 & 1823, By C. & I. Greenwood.

Published by the George Pringle Jun[io]r, 70 Queens Street, Cheapside, Sept. 1st, 1823., London, - Greenwood?Äôs large-scale map of Surrey Large engraved map on four sheets, dissected and mounted on linen, original full wash hand colour, edged in green silk, housed in original tree calf pull-off slipcase, red morocco label to spine, lettered in gilt, rubbed. The maps by Christopher and John Greenwood set new standards for large-scale surveys. Although they were unsuccessful in their stated aim to map all the counties of England and Wales it is probably no coincidence that of the ones they missed, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Herefordshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Oxfordshire, all except Cambridgeshire were mapped by Andrew Bryant in a similar style and at the same period. From a technical point of view the Greenwoods?Äô productions exceeded the high standards set in the previous century though without the decoration and charming title-pieces that typified large scale maps of that period. The Greenwoods started in 1817 with Lancashire and Yorkshire and by 1831 they had covered 34 counties. Their maps were masterpieces of surveying and engraving techniques, and in view of the speed at which they were completed, their accuracy is remarkable. They mark the boundaries of the counties, hundreds and parishes, churches and chapels, castles and quarries, farmhaouses and gentlemen?Äôs seats, heaths and common land, woods, parliamentary representatives and distances between towns. The price of 3 guineas each compares with the the first edition Ordnance Survey sheets of 7s 6d, though the latter did not relate to complete counties. 1010 by 1230mm. (39.75 by 48.5 inches).

        The World on Mercator's Projection

      H. S. Tanner, Philadelphia 1823 - Copper-engraved map, with full original color, n very good condition. A World map by one of America's first great cartographers The objective of depicting a three dimensional sphere on a two dimensional sheet of paper has challenged mapmakers since Classical times. Mercator's solution was to straighten all of the longitudinal meridians, making them perpendicular to the lines of latitude. The consequence of this projection was that while lands close to the Equator assumed a relatively realistic form, lands closer to the poles attained a progressively attenuated and exaggeratedly large appearance. The map reflects the great improvements in geographical understanding in the wake of the epic sea voyages of the late eighteenth-century, most notably those by Cook, La Perouse and Vancouver.

REFLEXIONES DE UN HABANERO SOBRE LA INDEPENDENCIA DE ESTA ISLA

Habana: Oficinia de Arazoza y Soler, 1823. [4],37pp. Small quarto. Modern morocco, titled in gilt on front board and spine. Titlepage slightly dusty, else quite clean and fresh. Near fine. "Segunda edicion. Corregida y Aumentada por su Autor," preceded only by a much briefer version of Arango y Parreno's essay in the periodical, EL REVISOR POLITICO Y LITERARIO, on June 30, 1823. This is the first edition in book form, and more substantial than the earlier appearance: additional text has been added above and beyond the periodical appearance, including notes and a postscript. The conclusion of the present edition is dated September 12, 1823. Francisco de Arango y Parreno (1765-1837) was born in Cuba and educated as a lawyer. He became a prominent politician and landowner, and was a leader of reform movements on the island. A member of the Supreme Council of the Indies, he was appointed Cuban Minister of State in 1820 and Finance Minister in 1824. He argued for freer trade for Cuba, and the increased importation of slaves to enhance agricultural production. In this work he compares Cuba to the United States and argues that the situations of the two are different, and that Cuba under Spain was in a different condition than the United States on the eve of the American Revolution. Cubans were free, allowed to trade freely, represented in the Spanish parliament, and not subject to arbitrary taxation. As such, Cuba had no need for formal independence from Spain, but existed comfortably in a relationship akin to that of Canada and England. This copy comes from the Coleccion Monclau, with their bookplate on the front pastedown. OCLC locates a total of only five copies, at the Library of Congress, Harvard, the Bancroft Library, Princeton, and the British Library. Rare, and an interesting argument against Cuban independence, by a leading politician. OCLC 26838670, 559354194, 14963922. PALAU 253238. SABIN 17804.

The renormalization group: Critical phenomena and the Kondo problem" Reviews of Modern Physics 47 (4), 1975, pp. 773-839

Lancaster: American Physical Society, 1823 FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF WILSON'S FUNDAMENTAL PHASE TRANSITIONS RENORMALIZATION PAPER QUANTITATIVELY DESCRIBING THE KONDO EFFECT AS WELL AS ITS SOLUTION. Wilson himself thought this lengthly work the most important of his seminal renormalization papers because it is "the first example where the full renormalization program has been realized: the formal aspects of the fixed points, eigenoperators, and scaling laws will be blended with the practical aspect of numerical approximate calculations of effective interactions to give a quantitative solution to a problem that previously had seemed hopeless" (Wilson, 1975, 805). Referring to Wilson's work, the physicist Steven Weinberg wrote: "Ken Wilson was one of a very small number of physicists who changed the way we all think, not just about specific phenomena, but about a vast range of different phenomena" (New York Times Obituary). Wilson's renormalization program was essentially an ingenious development in the solution of problems. "Instead of a frontal attack, [Wilson] developed a method to divide the problem into a sequence of simpler problems, in which each part can be solved. Wilson built his theory on an essential modification of a method in theoretical physics called renormalization group theory, which was developed already during the fifties" (Nobel Prize Committee). Wilson's paper describes his innovative solution to the Kondo Problem through the use of "the numerical renormalization methods that he developed for solving the much broader problem of phase transitions in solids; for example, the transition from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism. Wilson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1982 for creating a general theory of phase transitions, a theoretical structure that predicted all aspects of the data on phase transitions that had been accumulated by physicists over many years" (Heeger, The Kondo Problem, 122). The Kondo effect describes the scattering of electrons from a localized magnetic impurity and was initiated by the work of Jun Kondo in 1964; while Kondo's work explained "most of the effect, it failed to fully explain the resistivity increase at temperatures very near to absolute zero. This remaining issue was called "the Kondo problem" (History of Physics: The Wenner Collection). The Kondo effect continues to capture the imagination of theorists and experimentalists in part because it is one of the few examples in physics where many particles collectively behave as one object (a single quantum-mechanical body). Because "the effect arises from the interactions between a single magnetic atom, such as cobalt, and the many electrons in an otherwise non-magnetic metal. Such an impurity typically has an intrinsic angular momentum or "spin" that interacts with the electrons - as a result, the mathematical description of the system is a difficult many-body problem" (Kouwenhoven & Glazman, Physics World 2001, 33). "From a historical perspective, the Kondo model therefore clearly has an iconic status…. It can be said without exaggeration that the ideas of scaling and renormalization group developed en route to solving the Kondo problem represent a cornerstone in our current understanding of correlated many-body systems, applicable to both condensed matter and high-energy physics (Nevidomskyy, The Kondo Model). CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Physical Society.(10.5 x 8 inches; 263 x 200mm). Original wraps. Very slight scuffing at the edges of the wraps. (See photo). Bright and clean.

BOUND FIRST EDITION OF FRAUNHOFER'S USE OF THE WAVE THEORY OF LIGHT"TO DERIVE, WITH SUITABLE SIMPLIFICATIONS, THE GENERAL FORMULATION OF THE GRATING EQUATION STILL IN USE TODAY" (DSB, 5, 142). Fraunhofer's paper "predated by 40 years the next serious measurements of the spectra of the stars" (Longair, The Cosmic Century, 4). The son of a glazier, Joseph Ritter von Fraunhofer was a German physicist whose "motivation for studying the solar spectrum was his realisation that accurate measurements of the refractive indices of glasses should be made using monochromatic light" (Longair). His work led to his discovery of the Fraunhofer lines, dark absorption lines in the Sun's spectrum, and, as evidenced in this paper, to the construction of far superior optical glass and achromatic telescope objectives. Following his 1821 quantitative study of diffraction phenomena, Fraunhofer revealed, in this, his next paper, "his continued investigation of diffraction gratings. He continued his study of the effect of oblique rays, developed formulations based on a wave conception, and calculated a revised set of wavelengths for the major spectral lines. Thus, his earlier observations of the dark lines in the solar spectrum enabled him to make the highly precise measurements of dispersion" (DSB, 5, 142). His new observations of the "spectra of the planets and the brightest stars anticipated by about 40 years the next serious attempts to measure the spectra of the stars (Fraunhofer, 1823), He concluded that the stars have dark lines in their spectra similar to those seen in the Sun, but that the lines present differ from star to star" (Longair, The Cosmic Century, 6). He concluded that the stars have dark lines in their spectra similar to those seen in the Sun, but that the lines present differ from star to star" (Longair, The Cosmic Century, 6).         View of Sydney] Part of the Harbour of Port Jackson, and the country between Sydney and the Blue Mountains, New South Wales. Dedicated to R. I. Wilmot Horton, Esqr. M. P. under Secretary of State for the Colonies. By Major Taylor of H. M. 48 Regr.

Published Messr. Colnaghi & Co., Augt. 1823., London, - Rare views of Sydney Engraving with acquatint, tear to upper right portion of print skilfully repaired, watermark of J.Whatman. James Taylor, of the 48th Regiment, made the original drawings for his aquatints in c. 1820, claiming he hoped the prints would be by 'of service to the Colony' (Taylor to Alexander Berry, 28 Feb 1820). From the vantage point of Observatory Hill, the plates offered 'the magnificent Harbour of Port Jackson - its rocky and picturesque Shores - its numerous Islands and inlets - the Town of Sydney - the beautiful and Romantic Scenery of the Vicinity.'."By 1820, Sydney was a town of 12,000 inhabitants, about a third of whom were convicts. It had grown dramatically during the administration of Lachlan Macquarie who was appointed governor of New South Wales in 1810. Unlike previous governors, Macquarie was not content merely to oversee a penal colony. His vigorous building programme changed forever the appearance of Sydney, while his policy of accepting emancipated convicts as respected citizens demonstrated a social attitude strangely out of step with the times. Both these policies earned him criticism. In 1819, alarmed by Macquarie's extravagant public works, the British Government commissioned a lawyer and civil servant, J.T.Bigge, to investigate. The attacks by his critics were met head on by Macquarrie's supporters in New South Wales. Books, pamphlets and paintings luded the governor's undoubted achievements. Almost certainly Major Taylor's drawings were used in, if not commissioned for, this cause. The engraved views of the Panorama present a flattering image of the Australian seat of government and, by extension, of Macquarie's term there.Taylor arranged the engraving and printing of the of the three sheet Panorama. upon his return to England in July 1822.Havell appears to have worked from [Taylor's]. large watercolours, but amended them with additional details. and decorative elements. It is most fortuitous that the copper plates.have survived. There is no other example of such a case for 19th century Australian engravings." 450 by 620mm (17.75 by 24.5 inches). State Library of New South Wales, V1 / ca. 1821 / 6

Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22. With an Appendix on Various Subjects Relating to Science and Natural History

xvi+768+[6 index] pages with 31 plates of which 11 are in color (9 in aquatint) and with four plates of plants (1 in color) preceding four large folding maps all dated March 1823, with an appendix which Sabin calls "valuable" in its contribution to the knowledge of the natural history of the area and errata slip tipped in. Quarto (10 3/4" x 8 1/2") bound in original contemporary tree calf with spine in gilt lettering. The plates were engraved by Finden, from drawings by Lieutenants Hood and Back. (Hill 635. Abbey Travel 635; Arctic Bibliography 5194; Books on Ice 3.1; Lande 1181) First edition first issue with the errata slip mounted to page 768.This expedition also known as the Coppermine Expedition of 1819–1822 had as its goal the exploration of the northern coast of Canada, which was accessed by way of the Coppermine River. The British expedition was organized by the Royal Navy as part of its attempt to discover and map the Northwest Passage. It was the first of three Arctic expeditions to be led by John Franklin, and also included George Back and John Richardson, both of whom would become significant Arctic explorers in their own right. The expedition was plagued by poor planning, bad luck and unreliable allies. The expected assistance from the local fur trading companies and native peoples was less forthcoming than expected, and the dysfunctional supply line, coupled with unusually harsh weather and the resulting absence of game, meant that the explorers were never far from starvation. Eventually the Arctic coast was reached, but barely 500 miles had been explored before the exhaustion of the party's supplies and the onset of winter forced them to turn back. The expedition made a desperate retreat across uncharted territory in a state of starvation, often with nothing more than lichen to eat. Eleven of the twenty strong party died amid accusations of murder and cannibalism before the survivors were rescued by native people of the Yellowknife tribe. In the aftermath of the expedition, John Franklin was much criticized by local fur traders for his haphazard planning and failure to adapt to the circumstances he faced, but in Britain he was received as a hero, fêted for the courage he had shown in extreme adversity. The expedition captured the public imagination, and in reference to a desperate measure he took while starving, he became known as "the man who ate his boots".Condition:Second contents leaf bound at end of preliminaries; lacks the half-title, rebacked, spine scuffed, rear board splitting along fore edge, endpapers renewed; infrequent minor foxing, occasional light offsetting from plates else about a very good copy.

The Art of Valuing Rents and Tillages; wherein is explained the Manner of Valuing the Tenant's Right on entering and quitting Farms, in Yorkshire and the adjoining Counties. The Whole is adapted for the Use of Landlords, Land Agents, Appraisers, Farmers, and Tenants

Engraved frontis. (partially handcolored). 3 p.l., 187, [1] pp. 8vo, orig. grey paper-backed blue boards (corners a little rounded, minor foxing), orig. printed paper label on spine, uncut. London: Longman et al., 1823. First edition and scarce. This the first of two popular works on land valuation by Bayldon, a professional land agent and appraiser; the present text reached a sixth edition by 1844. The engraved frontispiece depicts an idealized plan of a farm of 242 acres which cultivated wheat, clover, and grass. We learn from page 2: "When it is considered that works have been written on almost every subject connected with Agriculture…it appears rather singular that the various customs of valuing Rents and Tillages have scarcely been noticed in any of them. It is humbly presumed that this is the first work published expressly upon valuing Rents and Tillages." A very good copy.
