Constitución política del estado de Chile, promulgada en 29 de diciembre de 1823.

Imprenta Nacional, 1823. Sixth Chilean constitution, the first having been the Reglamento para el arreglo de la Autoridad Ejecutiva Provisoria de Chile 1811. The author here was Mariano Egaña (1793-1846), "one of the two or three best-read Creole intellectuals of the time. . . . [but] The constitution was far too complex to be applied to Chile (or anywhere else)" (Collier & Sater, History of Chile, pp. 48-49). This constitution and its 277 articles were replaced by the Ensayo Federal de 1826.

ACCREDITED GHOST STORIES. Collected by T. M. Jarvis, Esq. ..

London: Printed for J. Andrews, New Bond Street, 1823.. 12mo, pp. [i-v] vi [vii-viii] [1] 2-235 [236: blank], rebound in nineteenth-century three-quarter brown leather and marbled boards, spine panel ruled in gold, black leather title label. First edition. A collection of credulous ghost stories based on UK legends and folklore, an early forerunner of similar compilations of "true" ghost stories by Catherine Crowe and Elliott O'Donnell. "When Horace Walpole used all the apparatus of Gothic fantasy in THE CASTLE OF OTRANTO (1765) he created a literary vehicle for ghosts without establishing the ghost story; the spectres were merely a stage effect. But they now became the stock-in-trade of the Gothic school of writing. In these novels a haunted edifice was an inevitable centerpiece. In most cases the hauntings were contrived by human agency or the ghost had a walk-on part in order to provoke the action; in much fewer cases were the ghost genuinely supernatural, with a more significant role. Most of these books were formulaic and repetitive, but a few are worthy of note ... Although the better Gothics also utilized ghosts, these were usually rationalized. The use of sheeted spectres, wailing phantoms, rattling chains and gibbering skeletons reduced the supernatural element to burlesque, and the Gothic ghost story was soon parodied in such works as NIGHTMARE ABBEY (1818) by Thomas Love Peacock and NORTHANGER ABBEY (1818) by Jane Austen. Rudolph Ackermann published GHOST-STORIES; COLLECTED WITH A PARTICULAR VIEW TO COUNTERACT THE VULGAR BELIEF IN GHOSTS AND APPARITIONS ... (1823) in an effort to counter the excesses of the Gothic story ... In the UK the ghost story was as much influenced by folk tales and legend as by the Gothic romance. A number of ghost stories were collected in the same manner as the Grimm Brothers compiled their folk tales, and presented in narrative form. The main folklorists reporting these tales included James Hogg in WINTER EVENING TALES (1820) and THE SHEPHERD'S CALENDAR (1828), the brothers John and Michael Banim in REVELATIONS OF THE DEAD-ALIVE (1824) [this is future history, not a collection of folklore - LWC] and T. Crofton Croker in FAIRY LEGENDS AND TRADITIONS OF THE SOUTH OF IRELAND (1825). Their stories take the form of reportage of folk legends, but became increasingly humanized. The best-remembered collector of ghost stories was Catherine Crowe, with her highly influential THE NIGHT SIDE OF NATURE (1848), LIGHT AND DARKNESS (1850) and GHOSTS AND FAMILY LEGENDS (1858). These set the trend for 'real' ghost stories related in fictional narrative form, an approach that became very popular in the 1890s ..." - Clute and Grant, eds., The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 403. Private owner's bookplate affixed to front paste-down. Bound without the half title leaf and the final advertising leaf, light rubbing to leather al spine ends and corner tips and along outer joints, a very good copy. (#151810)

Whittaker, Ave-Maria-Lane, London, 1823.. 12mo, three volumes: pp. [1-4] [1] 2-312; [1-4] [1] 2-318 [319: printer's imprint] [320: blank]; [1-4] [1] 2-315 [316: printer's imprint], half title leaves present in each volume, early full calf, single gold rule border on front and rear panels, spine panels richly tooled in gold, black leather title pieces, red leather number pieces. As the 'forerunner of the realistic movement in Scottish fiction,' he has an acknowledged place in literary history." - Kunitz and Haycraft (eds), British Authors of the Nineteenth Century, p. 239.         MECHANICS' MAGAZINE, [Museum, Register, Journal and Gazette] Volume 1 (-Volume 20) [edited by Joseph Clinton Robertson]

London : Knight & Lacey 1823-28, then Mechanics' Magazine Office... 1829-34. 20 vols, 8vo, title-pages lacking in vols 10 & 11, contemporary (publisher's?) half cloth, marbled boards, printed paper labels, some rubbed, some foxing in text but a sound run.Apart from perhaps a set (unobtainable!) of 'Patent Specifications' the Mechanics Magazine is surely the richest single source for material on 19th century mechanics. A random sample of subjects from one volume include, railways, steam carriages, pile-driving, printing machinery, hydraulic bookbinder's press, Thames bridges, Russian paper-making, steam ships and an improved bee-hive. It was founded, and edited till 1851, by Joseph Clinton Robertson (1788-1852), a patent agent in Fleet Street. In 1859 with the beginning of the 'New Series' it changed both format (to 4to) and title to The Mechanics Magazine, and Journal of Engineering, Agricultural Machinery, Manufactures, and Shipbuilding, thus reflecting a change of direction from the 'amateur' mechanics of the early 19th century to the heavy engineering of the industrial revolution at its peak. It continued in this form until 1873 when it merged with Iron, a journal of the iron industry. It is this first series however which is by far the most interesting and important. In their editorial to volume 1 of the New Series, the editors, R.A. Brooman and E.J. Reed, say of the first issue - " .....it proved to be the beginning of a publication which has unquestionably exerted great influences upon modern science - has formed the model for scientific journalists throughout the world.... Nor was that first number the precursor of great literary influences alone. For in its pages Mr Robertson, its founder and editor, took the lead in the establishment of the London Mechanics' Institution and virtually of all those kindred institutions which now abound in the land."

        ICHIRO GAFU

1823. Good. [EHON] Yashima GAKUTEI, artist. ICHIRO GAFU. O^saka, Maekawa Zembei, [preface dated zodiacally as 1823]. 22.1 X 15.4 cm. Orange covers blind- patterned with a lozenge design, dark blue printed paper title label, fukuro toji binding, string-bound Japanese style. Illustrated throughout in color with many single and double page landscapes with figures. [Re: Hillier & Smith #127; Hillier Vol.2 p.854,5; Ryerson 277] An important classic which Hillier explains is a reprint, without the verse, of an earlier two volume privately printed "Kyokabon", entitled "Sansui Kikan Kyoka Shu" by Gakutei. Our copy is intermediate in ndate between the true 1823 Gasendo^ version and the Meiji version by Kajita Kansuke of Nagoya. It is bound without the double page image at sheet 10/11 which is very frequently missing. Thus there is a total of 24 single page and 7 double page images in the delicate colors of a relatively early impression (much lighter and more delicate than the Kanjita Kansuke version) The impressions are good. The covers are stained and spotted, but the interior is clean. One volume, as issued.

Kenzan iboku [Ink Traces of Kenzan]

      - Numerous fine color-printed woodcuts (several double-page). 15 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. patterned wrappers, block printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. N.p.: 1823. First edition of this beautiful book. Ogata (1663-1743), was a painter and one of the greatest ceramicists of the Tokugawa era, famous for the skill of his brush strokes. He was the younger brother of Korin Ogata (1658-1716), with whom he collaborated on many projects. Sakai (1761-1828), a prominent painter of the Rinpa school, was determined to revive and honor the style of the Ogata brothers. To that end, he published two books of woodblock prints of the brothers' work, the Korin Hyakuzu (1815) and the present work. The images here include Ogata's work in pottery (designs for incense containers for tea ceremonies), plates for sweets, hanging scrolls (including his iconic Evening Glories), illustrated poems, screens (including his plum blossom screen), fans, etc. The woodcuts have been re-interpreted by Sakai and display at the highest level the art of the wood engraver. The calligraphy displayed here as text and in the images is very finely executed. Sakai has provided an almost loving account of the work of Ogata as a preface. Fine copy.
