Bound in the original publisher's boards. First Edition. Scarce. This is a collection of the 26 issues of The Literary Examiner. It was set up chiefly as a vehicle for Hunt's The Indicator. A speech impediment, later cured, prevented his going to university. His poems were published in 1801 under the title of Juvenilia, and introduced him into literary and theatrical society. In 1808 he left the War Office, where he had been working as a clerk, to become editor of the Examiner. Hunt later was imprisoned for an attack on the Prince Regent in the Examiner.

(Saint-René Taillandier, in Revue des Deux Mondes, 1877).         Autographed Manuscript Signed

Geneva, NY, 1823. Geneva, NY, 1823. unbound. Original detailed autographed manuscript signed, folio, 10 pages (front and back), 13 x 8 inches, Geneva, New York, May 20, 1823 -- an extensive draft describing an invention that was called "a machine for hulking and cleaning clover seed," a device that was granted a patent by the United States Government on March 18, 1824. Burrall explains in detail that his innovation is unique because previous models wasted much of the seed, worked slowly, and ran at a great expense because they required immense power to propel them. "The machine that I am about to describe is free from all the above. It is cheap, simple and durable - may be propelled to advantage, either by hand by horse or water power - it feeds regularly & equally - the seed is beaten or whipped out lightly and briskly, all the light chaff containing no seed is thrown off before it reaches the working part of the mechanism." Much more exceptional content. This manuscript has heavy natural folds, but is still in very good condition. Pioneer, settler, and inventor who owned extensive land in the City of Geneva, Ontario County, New York. Despite holding patents for such successful inventions as the thrashing machine, the corn planter, cooking stove, and corn sheller, it was his association with Joseph Smith that would bring him notoriety. Historians speculate that Smith, the Mormon prophet, acquired use of some of Burrall's lands by the Seneca/Ontario border and on September 22, 1823 found the "certain plates of gold which recorded the true history of the Church of the American continent," the result becoming the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith's use of clover seed is well documented in John Heinerman's acclaimed books "Joseph Smith and Herbal Medicine" and "Joseph Smith and Natural Foods.

THE NATURAL AND ABORIGINAL HISTORY OF TENNESSEE, UP TO THE FIRST SETTLEMENTS THEREIN BY THE WHITE PEOPLE, IN THE YEAR 1768.

Nashville: Printed by George Wilson, 1823. - viii,390,liv pp. Contemporary calf, spine gilt with leather labels. Corners worn, joints cracked. Modern bookplate on each pastedown. Contemporary ownership inscription on front flyleaf and titlepage. Light foxing and toning. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase and chemise. First edition of Haywood's substantial account of the natural and aboriginal history of Tennessee. A judge in Davidson County and one of the pioneering historians of Tennessee, Haywood wrote the companion volume entitled THE CIVIL AND POLITICAL HISTORY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, FROM ITS EARLIEST SETTLEMENT UP TO THE YEAR 1796, also published in 1823. In addition to providing much information about the Indians of Tennessee, the author attempts to demonstrate the relationship of Native Americans to the Caucasian race. He also includes details regarding Mexicans, Hindus, Persians, Peruvians, Cherokees, Chickasaws, and Natchez Indians. "In this book, now exceedingly rare and highly prized, the author has brought together a very large number of curious facts, relating to the origin and character of the natives of his State, prior to the settlement by the whites. He does not favor the hypothesis of great antiquity in the Indian nations of America, and believes in their common origin with the Caucasian race. He describes with great minuteness and care the relics of the race which once inhabited the territory, its utensils, skeletons, crania, and fortifications, most of which he appears to have personally inspected" - Field.         High-ways and By-Ways; Or Tales of the Roadside, Picked up in the French Province

London - G. and W. B. Whittaker, 1823. London - G. and W. B. Whittaker, 1823 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce early edition ofHigh-ways and By-Ways; Or Tales of the Roadside, Picked up in the French Province by 'A Walking Gentleman' orThomas Colley Grattan. Dedicated to Washington Irving. Thomas Colley Grattan (1792 - 1864), was an Irish miscellaneous writer. He wrote a few novels, including The Heiress of Bruges (1830); but his best work was Highways and Byways, a description of his Continental wanderings, of which he published three series. In a short time he moved to Paris, where he made the acquaintance of Moore, Washington Irving, Thiers, Branger, Lamartine, and other distinguished literary men, and became a constant contributor to the Westminster Review, Edinburgh Review, The New Monthly Magazine, and other periodicals. He also commenced a serial of his own, which he called The Paris Monthly Review of British and Continental Literature, by a Society of English Gentlemen. No. 1 came out in January 1822, and No. 15 (April 1823) appears to have been the last issue of this magazine. By Washington Irving's advice he reduced to order the memoranda of some of his tours, and submitted the manuscript to four publishing houses of eminence in succession, who all rejected it. This work was Highways and Byways, or Tales of the Roadside, which, on its appearance in 1823, dedicated to Washington Irving, made its author's name widely known both in England and on the continent, and was several times reprinted. The second series of these tales came out in 1825, and the third in 1827. Previous owner's ink inscription to front free endpaper. Condition: Rebacked in quarter calf with original paper covered boards. Externally, sound but withsome wear to extremities and marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound.
