Narrative of a Voyage Round the World , in the Uranie and Physicienne Corvettes, commanded by Captain Freycinet, during the years 1817, 1818, 1819 and 1820

London: Treuttel and Wurtz, 1823. Quarto, two parts in one, with a folding map and 25 lithograph plates, slight tear to title page repaired, occasional spotting to plates; contemporary smooth calf, gilt, neatly respined to match, a good copy. The artist's account of the Freycinet voyage. The first edition in English of this informal narrative of the Freycinet voyage, the great French expedition to Australia and the Pacific commanded by Louis de Freycinet; it is also the first appearance in English of any account of the expedition. Arago was the official artist on the voyage, and the lithograph plates here are all after his own drawings. His narrative is highly readable, not least because he entirely avoids the conventional forms of the voyage narrative, ignoring the 'eternal repetition of winds, currents, longitude and lattitude'. Long portions relate to Australia, with descriptions of Sydney, the Blue Mountains, and of meetings with Governor Macquarie and John Oxley. There is also a long account (almost 100 pages) of their stay in Hawaii at a crucial period in the history of the islands. Full of wry humour, the book takes the form of a series of letters to a friend, and it has been suggested that the letters may originally have been written to Arago's brother François, the famous scientist. Certainly it is the intimacy of their personal and anecdotal tone that makes them not only so enjoyable to read today but such a fascinating source of the more minute details of life, especially in New South Wales and Hawaii. The illustrations match the text in tone: these are not the formal depictions that characterise the beautiful atlases of the full official account of the voyage, but much more informal, always charming and in some cases quite eccentric. Despite the clear evidence of the 'Directions for placing the Plates' present here, there has been some unnecessary confusion about the collation of this book. Ferguson omitted the map from his plate count, while Hill erroneously called for a map and 26 plates. This copy, with the map and 25 plates is complete.

Architectural Designs for Rustic Cottages, Picturesque Villas &c

London: for J. Taylor, 1823. Quarto, 33 engraved plates (23 sepia aquatints); endpapers spotted otherwise an excellent clean copy, partly unopened in original grey boards, with 16 pp. publisher's catalogue. An excellent unsophisticated copy of the second edition. Pocock (1779-1849) had an extensive and varied architectural practice in England, Ireland and Canada, where he built the Ball and Supper-Room for the Mansion in Montreal, c. 1820. This pattern book sets out designs for a dairy, a number of rustic cottages, as well as designs for more grander undertakings, such as castles and abbeys, in the Gothic style. The final essay explores "the Causes of the Dry Rot". Clive Lucas has suggested that this pattern book could have been the inspiration behind the design for Hobartville, William Cox's residence in Richmond (Lucas, Australian Colonial Architecture).

Elia: Essays Which Have Appeared Under That Signature in the London Magazine

London: Printed for Taylor and Hessey 1823 - First edition, first issue, published without the half-title, with the publisher's single-line Fleet Street address to the tile page, lacking publisher's terminal advertisements. Finely bound in full navy morocco, with five raised bands to the spine, decorative gilt stamping to the spine bands and compartments, spine lettered in gilt, boards ruled in gilt, all edges gilt, elaborate gilt turn-ins, maroon coated endpapers. Very good or better, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, a hint of toning to the spine, front hinge tender with some wear and rubbing to outer hinge, otherwise sturdy spine, bright and fresh pages. A clean copy of the scarce first issue in a lovely morocco binding. Elia is a collection of Lamb's popular essays, each of which was originally published in London Magazine. Specifically, it includes "The South-Sea House," "Christ's Hospital Five and Thirty Years Ago," "Dream-Children; A Reverie," and "Modern Gallantry," among others. Lamb, a long-time clerk for the British East India Company, began writing essays under the pseudonym "Elia," which he derived from a former colleague's surname. Lamb wrote in a colloquial and conversational style that made his essays beloved by his Edwardian and Victorian readers. Additionally, Lamb included many of his friends and family in his writing, loosely disguised by initials and pseudonyms. Mary Lamb, Charles' sister and co-author of the popular Tales from Shakespeare (1807), appears as "Cousin Bridget." This first collection of Lamb's essays was complemented with a second volume in 1833 entitled The Last Essays of Elia: Being a Sequel to Essays Published under that Name. Interestingly, while the American edition of the first collection, published by Carey, Lea, and Carey in Philadelphia, was preceded by this first British edition by five years, the American issue of the second collection preceded its British counterpart; less restricted by copyright laws in the United States, the American publishers were able to issue both Elia volumes simultaneously in 1828.         Godwin's Emigrant's Guide to Van Diemen's Land , more properly called Tasmania, containing a Description of its Climate, Soil and Productions; a Form of Application for Free Grants of Land? a list of the most necessary Articles to take out, and other information Useful to Emigrants?

Sherwood, Jones, London 1823 - Octavo, with a folding handcoloured map and a folding view; original boards, printed paper label; some embrowning and offsetting from the map, but a very good uncut copy in original binding, preserved in a quarter calf box. First edition: now rare. Godwin's work on Van Diemen's Land is one of the earliest books to promote free emigration to an Australian colony. Earlier publications were essentially historical or narrative accounts, and this is arguably the earliest Australian emigrant's guide. Tasmania was undergoing a period of massive expansion in the 1820s: the population rose from 5468 to 24,279 and included thousands of free immigrants, for many of whom Godwin's Guide would have been standard reading. It attempts to cover all areas of interest to the immigrant - as well as articles describing the island there are specialist chapters on sheep, land clearing, the cost of labour, cattle prices, commerce and much detail on the ordinary mechanics of living, including a short article on "a weekly Gazette published at Hobart Town by Mr A. Bent". The lithograph frontispiece ("South West View of Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land") is by A. Aglio, after G.W. Evans's view of the same name. Aglio, adopting contemporary artistic practice, has embellished Evans's original work with the addition of cows and kangaroos in the foreground. Not all copies were issued with the folding map in the superior handcoloured form, as here. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Life of the Race Horse: Watering [No. 5]; Sweating [No. 7]; Rubbing, after a sweat [No. 8]; Feeding [No. 9]

Rodwell and Martin, London 1823 - Fine, carefully observed lithographic studies of the horses as well as their grooms and trainers. The present lithographs are from the very rare series entitled 'Life of the Race Horse' by John Doyle, and not listed in Mellon, Siltzer or Abbey. Charles Lane gives some details of the series but notes that it consists of eight plates, the present plate is numbered 9, and may, therefore, indicate that more than eight images were produced. John Doyle "was born in Ireland and after studying under portrait and miniature painters and at the Dublin Society Drawing Academy, he came to England in about 1822. At first a portrait painter, he later became a caricaturist of note signing such work 'H.B.' (two conjoined JDs). He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1825 and 1835 from London addresses. Doyle painted several sporting scenes. Those of horses have a powerful impact both in the subject and his ability to use light to great advantage. Most of all, the portraits of owners and trainers are particularly fine.' (Lane). Incidentally, Doyle was also the grandfather of the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Charles Lane, British Sporting Prints 1700-1940 , pp.99-100. Lithographs, coloured by hand, by and after John Doyle, printed by Charles Hullmandel.

Portrait of Augustus Leopold Kuper as a midshipman, in the year he entered the Royal Navy at the age of fourteen

London: June, 1823. Watercolour over pencil on artist's board, 195cm x 235 mm., signed Paul Fischer, lower left, and dated; in original frame. London, June 1823. A charming portrait of Kuper as a young man in naval uniform. Kuper served as first lieutenant under Captain Bremer on the Alligator, and was an important officer in this attempt to found a new colony at Port Essington. Augustus Leopold Kuper (1809-1885) was the son of the Rev. Dr. William Küper, chaplain to Queen Adelaide. He entered the Royal Navy in 1823, the year this portrait was painted, and embarked on what was to become an illustrious naval career. In 1837 he was appointed first lieutenant of HMS Alligator which sailed from Plymouth to re-establish a settlement at Port Essington. The ships arrived in Sydney Cove in July, and spent two months revictualling and preparing for their task. Bremer, the ship's captain - also Kuper's father-in-law - was commissioned as a Commandant of the new settlement in northern Australia; Kuper was one of four officers who, with Bremer, were given power to act as Commissioners for Crown Lands. This was in fact the third attempt to establish a settlement in North Australia, the first of which in 1824 was also under the command of Bremer. After the new settlement was established, Kuper returned to Sydney, and was appointed captain of HMS Pelorus. He sailed to China with orders to return via Port Essington with a delivery of letters, supplies and official orders, arriving on 24 August 1839. Three months later a fearsome cyclone struck and the Pelorus was driven on to the beach with tremendous force, and was pushed over leaving the mast submerged and the keel exposed; Kuper's own painting of this dramatic scene is now in the Museum and Art Gallery of Northern Territory in Alice Springs. Kuper took charge of the massive operation to refloat the ship which he carried out with great expertise and ingenuity. He went on to have a long and successful career, serving particularly in Chinese and Pacific waters. This delicate portrait of the young midshipman is by the Royal Academician Paul Fischer. Although only fourteen years of age, and only just admitted into the Royal Navy, Fischer has certainly captured the young man's poise and confidence. Fischer, was an active miniaturist and portrait painter in London. He started exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1817 and was to have an extraordinary total of eighty works accepted for the annual Royal Academy exhibitions during his very successful career. His large body of work includes several commissions for the Prince Regent and for the Princess Royal. He painted a number of portraits of the Küper family, three of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy: "The Daughters of the Rev. Dr. Küper", and "William and George Küper" in 1826, and then in 1842, "Miss Küper

An Essay on the History and Theory of Music; and on the qualities, capabilities, and management of the human voice

London: Whittaker, 1823. Large quarto, including 40 leaves of engraved musical scores continuously paginated with the text; old pencil marginalia, a little foxing and neat marginal repair of three leaves; a good copy in mid-nineteenth century black half with gilt lettering, slightly rubbed. Music and poetry by Byron's old collaborator. A treatise on the art of singing and the philosophy of music by Isaac Nathan, fondly remembered as the 'father of Australian music'. By most accounts a witty and vivacious character, Nathan was a scholar of Aboriginal music, composer of the first opera written in Australia, and a prominent figure in Sydney social circles. Born in Canterbury in 1790, Nathan's father was a singer in the local synagogue and instructed his son in the lore of traditional Jewish music. Throughout his life, Nathan forged links between Jewish music and mainstream European culture. In this respect he is best remembered for his collaboration with Lord Byron on the Hebrew Melodies of 1815. Nathan composed the scores for Byron's verse (including the enduring She Walks in Beauty) and the book was a resounding success for decades to follow. Following Byron's self-imposed exile and early death, Nathan continued to work as a singing instructor and composer. Nathan struggled with gambling debts throughout the late 1830s and finally sought a fresh start in Australia in 1841. He burst upon the parochial Sydney scene and quickly established a reputation as a singing teacher, composer, and vibrant conversationalist. Nathan was the first to record and memorialize the Aboriginal music and in 1847 composed Don Juan of Austria, the first opera written and produced in Australia. An Essay on the History and Theory of Music is an example of this fruitful cultural exchange, including illuminating detail on the history of Jewish melodies. It includes a table of Hebrew accents as pronounced by both Spanish and German (i.e. Sephardic and Ashkenazy) Jews accompanied by an engraved musical score. In this book Nathan insists that poetry and music are inseparable: 'Harmony prevails throughout the works of our Creator; it is perceivable in all living things, even to the minutest fibre of the smallest field-flower, and it is their just and symmetrical proportions which delight us by throwing a pleasing harmony over the whole. In poetry, sublimity of ideas, brilliancy of imagination, and the reasoning of philosophy, would be nothing if the versification did not strike in sweet numbers on the ear.' Nathan played an important role in the advancement of Australian music as the Sydney scene became increasingly cosmopolitan following the end of convict transportation. Possessed of mercurial curiosity (evidenced in the present book by an entire chapter concerning the effect of music upon animals) he was a successful ambassador for Jewish culture in both England and Australia. This copy is from the library of the Australian bibliophile and publisher Walter Stone, with his bookplate. An original early twentieth century photograph of Isaac Nathan's engraved tombstone is pasted to the front endpaper. Nathan died tragically in 1864, the first fatality of a horse-drawn tram in Sydney. The Australian Dictionary of Biography records he was buried in Camperdown cemetery.

Éloge de la Pérouse . Ouvrage qui a obtenu l'églantine d'or, décernée par l'Académie des jeux floraux du Toulouse, au concours de 1823

Paris: Firmin Didot, 1823. Octavo, 46 pp., with some of the foxing endemic to some French books of this period; very good in recent blue paper boards with morocco label. La Perouse eulogy. Very rare eulogy to La Pérouse published some thirty-five years after the disappearance of his two vessels, and a scant three years before the wrecks of the Astrolabe and the Boussole were discovered by the sandalwood trader Peter Dillon. Vinaty (sometimes 'Vinati') prepared the work for the Académie des Jeux-Floraux of Toulouse, where the eulogy won their prize l'Eglantine d'Or. The work is not only testament to the enduring importance of La Pérouse in the French-speaking world, it is also an interesting document of its time, because Vinaty shows a willingness to skip over the years of the Revolution and the rule of Napoleon. He is at pains to re-assert a continuity with the glory of France under Louis XVI, in the process presenting La Pérouse as a truly great French hero, but also as one capable of honouring the memory and achievements of Cook (a lengthy passage, for instance, praises La Pérouse for raising a suitable memorial above the tomb of Cook's successor Captain Clerke in Kamchatka). Throughout, the tone is pure Restoration, underlined by his quoting from the great exile writer Chateaubriand. The work's rarity is borne out by Ferguson, who first located a copy in the Edward Weber Allen collection in California in time for the addenda to volume II of his bibliography; the copy in the State Library of New South Wales was added with a revised note to the full Addenda volume of 1986. The work is also noticed in McLaren's Lapérouse in the Pacific, who added a copy in the Bibliothèque Nationale. Otherwise, Vinaty's work is not noted in many standard references (it is a surprising omission from Forbes's Hawaiian National Bibliography); nor is it listed in important collections such as Kroepelien and Hill.

His narrative is highly readable, not least because he entirely avoids the conventional forms of the voyage narrative, ignoring the "eternal repetition of winds, currents, longitude and lattitude". Full of wry humour, it takes the form of a series of letters to a friend. Long portions relate to Australia, with descriptions of Sydney, the Blue Mountains, and of meetings with Governor Macquarie and John Oxley. There is also a long account (almost 100 pages) of their stay in Hawaii at a crucial period in the history of the islands. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

German Scenery from Drawings made in 1820, by Captain Batty of the Grenadier Guards, F.R.S

London: Rodwell & Martin,, 1823. Quarto (269 × 180 mm). Contemporary dark green half straight-grain morocco on drab boards, title gilt direct, low bands with double gilt fillet, attractive floral lozenge to the compartments, single gilt rule to spine and corner edges, top edge gilt, drab endpapers. High quality steel-engraved title page with vignette view, and 60 similar plates, half-title bound in. Text in English and French. A little rubbed, some foxing to title and prelims, and occasionally to the contents, mild hygroscopic damping to the fore-margins towards the rear, last three plates more heavily affected, but remains very good, and attractive. First edition. Attractive series of views, the majority in present-day Austria, including many of Vienna and Salzburg. Batty served with his regiment in the latter stages of the Peninsular War - blockade of Bayonne - and in Wellington's campaign in the Netherlands - Quatre Bras, and at Waterloo, La Haye Sainte and the advance on the Imperial Guard - subsequently he was in Paris during the occupation. He seems to have spent little time with the Guards after their return from France, and as "a talented amateur artist" (Bryan) produced a series of illustrated topographical books, of which this was the second. He also illustrated his father-in-law John Barrow's A Family Tour through South Holland, up the Rhine and across the Netherlands (1831). The present work is dedicated to Barrow. Attractive circular presentation label to the front pastedown recording the gift of the book to Augusta Thornton from Mrs. Eliza Ford of Clifton in 1848.

        Island of Stromboli.

1823 - London: R. Bowyer, 1809-10. Coloured aquatint. 305 x 400mm. A view of the volcanic island of Stromboli, engraved by William Watts for Mayer's 'Views in the Ottoman Dominions, in Europe, in Asia, and some of the Mediterranean islands, from the original drawings taken for Sir Robert Ainslie'. Luigi Mayer (1755-1803), an Italian-German artist, travelled extensively through the Mediterranean and the Ottoman Empire between 1776 and 1794. His watercolours and drawings form one of most important records of the Middle East in the 18th century. Mayer's patron was Sir Robert Ainslie, British ambassador to Turkey 1776-92: much of Mayer's work was presented to the British Museum as part of Ainslie's bequest, including the watercolour on which this print is based, in an album dated 1788.

Éloge de la Pérouse . Ouvrage qui a obtenu l'églantine d'or, décernée par l'Académie des jeux floraux du Toulouse, au concours de 1823

Firmin Didot, Paris 1823 - Octavo, 46 pp., with some of the foxing endemic to some French books of this period; very good in recent blue paper boards with morocco label. An Essay on the History and Theory of Music; and on the qualities, capabilities, and management of the human voice

Whittaker, London 1823 - Large quarto, including 40 leaves of engraved musical scores continuously paginated with the text; old pencil marginalia, a little foxing and neat marginal repair of three leaves; a good copy in mid-nineteenth century black half with gilt lettering, slightly rubbed. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Autograph inscription signed "CMvWeber" to an unidentified male correspondent

53 x 126 mm., cut from the title page of one of Weber's works. Dated Dresden, October 22, 1823. In German (with translation). "Dedicated to the excellent master.... in great haste, in remembrance of his true admirer." Slightly worn and soiled; one vertical crease; portion of inscription abraided and thus illegible. . "A prototypical 19th-century musician-critic, [Weber] sought through his works, words and efforts as performer and conductor to promote art and shape emerging middle-class audiences to its appreciation. His contributions to song, choral music and piano music were highly esteemed by his contemporaries, his opera overtures influenced the development of the concert overture and symphonic poem, and his explorations of novel timbres and orchestrations enriched the palette of musical sonorities. With the overwhelming success of his opera Der Freischütz in 1821 he became the leading exponent of German opera in the 1820s and an international celebrity. A seminal figure of the 19th century, he influenced composers as diverse as Marschner, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Meyerbeer, Berlioz and Liszt." Philipp Spitta et al in Grove online
