NARRATIVE OF A JOURNEY TO THE SHORES OF THE POLAR SEA, IN THE YEARS 1819, 20, 21, AND 22...WITH AN APPENDIX ON VARIOUS SUBJECTS RELATING TO SCIENCE AND NATURAL HISTORY

London: John Murray, 1823.. London: John Murray, 1823.. iii-xvi,768pp., plus thirty plates (eleven in color) and four folding maps. Quarto. Mid-19th-century three-quarter morocco and marbled boards. Corners scuffed, joints rubbed. Bookplate of Henry Marquand on the front free endpaper. Scattered foxing, occasional offsetting. Text and maps are clean and bright. Overall a very good, attractive copy. With the errata slip not found with all copies. The plates in this copy are bound as detailed on the list of illustrations, entirely in the text, with no plate as a frontispiece. The narrative of Franklin's first expedition of 1819- 22. Franklin, along with naturalist Dr. John Richardson, was appointed to lead an expedition overland from Hudson Bay to east of the mouth of the Copper-Mine River for the purposes of establishing the latitudes and longitudes of the northern coast of America, developing a correct geographical description of the country, and searching for a northwest passage. Franklin's narrative includes a great deal of detail regarding the country, native Indians, the murder of Robert Hood, and the disappointment in failing to find a passage. Sabin calls the appendix "valuable" in its contribution to the knowledge of natural history in the area. The handsome plates include illustrations of the native Indians and Eskimos (many of them attractively colored), artifacts, types of fish, and ships at sea. "'The views of Arctic scenery with which these volumes are both illustrated and embellished, are of extreme beauty.' - QUARTERLY REVIEW" - Sabin. Two issues were published of this first volume, both in 1823. The present issue is the first, since it contains an errata slip listing changes which were incorporated into the second issue. The second issue consists of xv,[2],783,[1] pages and appears to contain the same plates, although several bibliographers call for four additional plates in the second issue (see Streeter and Sabin). The second issue contains a longer introduction, with an additional note about the moral condition of the Indians. The main text appears to be extremely similar (though not identical) up to page 730, in the midst of John Richardson's "Botanical Appendix," and thereafter a number of changes are incorporated into the second issue. The third edition of Wagner-Camp lists the second issue, and the fourth edition of Wagner-Camp lists the first issue. One of the maps called for in the list of plates and maps, "[Route] From Slave Lake to the Arctic Sea," is not present, and "An Outline to Shew the Connected discoveries of Capts. Ross, Parry & Franklin in the years 1818, 19, 20 and 21" is in its place. Apparently this was the map that was issued with the book, since it is contained in Streeter's copy and that of the Bancroft Library, which are also copies of this first issue (although evidently Wagner's copy contained the "correct" map). The error in the list of maps printed in the book is not corrected in the second issue, and the "Outline..." map is present in that volume as well. WAGNER-CAMP 23:1. FIELD 560. HILL 635. GRAFF 1406.         Wirtsstube in Tegernsee.

. Bleistiftzeichnung, unten rechts in Bleistift bezeichnet. Quadriert, um 1823, 18,5 x 28,5 cm.. Vgl. J. M. Elford’s Marine Telegraph; or, Universal Signal Book

Charleston, SC: , 1823. Charleston, SC, 1823. Handcolored plate and handcolored ill. on front pastedown. (5), x-xii, (2), vii, (1) xiii-xvi, (1), 18-75, (3), 81, 8 pp. “So composed as to enable vessels at sea, provided with only two sets of the six telegraphic flags, described in the plate, to make 7569 signals ... and to act as telegraphs to each other ... Being also the key to the patent telegraph, invented by the author, capable of making 9330 progressive changes, by using the figures from 1 to 6 only.” This is quite an early American signal book. Truxtun and Porter had previously developed systems for naval use, but as far as I know this is the earliest American merchant system. Winterthur has a manuscript copy of Elford’s Signal system dated 1818. It was followed in 1832 by Parker’s signal book and then, in 1847, by Rogers’ system. Elford’s marine visual system depended on six uniquely patterned flags, and on a “conversation flag.” These are illustrated in this book, along with a glossary of words and sentences, and their numerical equivalents, which would be signaled by means of the flags. A sheet of testimonials has been pasted on the inside of the front board. At the bottom of this sheet is a tipped in paper listing “Agents.” Lemuel Moody of Portland is the first name. It would be interesting to know if he used Elford’s system to signal from his observatory. The front blank is inscribed, “Ship Marengo of New Orleans.” On the following blank is a hand colored illustration with manuscript showing the four flags that would signal Marengo’s identifying number. I have had this book twice before. Both of those copies ended at page 75, followed by a three page “Supplement.” In this copy the “Supplement is four pages long. It is followed by an 8 page dictionary listing ships and their identifying number. Rare. Worldcat shows only six libraries holding copies, none of which conform to this issue in terms of pagination. Bound in marbled boards with old linen over calf backstrip. Inner hinges cracked. sewing tight. Handcolored plate and illustrations are clean.

London: William Sams, 1823. First edition. Quarto (10 1/2 x 7 5/8 in; 268 x 195 mm). [8, incl. half-title], 150, [2, adv.] pp. Eighteen hand-colored untitled aquatint engravings. Original pictorially lithographed boards, rebacked. Joints starting yet firm, boards a little rubbed and marked, still an excellent copy. Chemised in a red cloth jacket within a full red morocco pull-off case. One of the better imitations of The Military Adventures of Johnny Newcome (1815). "Watercolourist and caricaturist William Heath (1795-1840)…worked mostly under the pseudonym of Paul Pry. He called himself 'Portrait and Military painter' and was reputed to be an 'ex-captain of dragoons' but is not recorded in the Army List. Heath began life as a draughtsman and his main claim to fame rests on his having produced the first caricature magazine in Europe, The Glasgow later Northern Looking-Glass, 1825-1826. Although this was a provincial work and without much text, it does pre-date Charles Philipon's similar publication. The height of his popularity fell between the years 1809-34, after which his humour was displaced by that of Robert Seymour and John Doyle" (Houfe, p. 338).Abbey, Life 361. Tooley 257.         Humorous Designs

, 1823. 1823. Scarce First British Appearance of Boilly's GrimacesBOILLY, Louis-Léopold. Boilly's Humorous Designs. Seven Plates, Coloured After the Original Drawings. Price One Guinea. London: E. & C. M'Lean, 1823. First UK publication of a selection of Boilly's initial plates from his Recueil de Grimaces (1823). Folio (14 1/2 x 11 in; 375 x 275 mm). Seven hand-colored lithographed plates after Boilly with original tissue guards. Original printed buff wrappers. An excellent copy, housed in a later black cloth portfolio, lettered in gilt on front cover and with the bookplate of Alfred N. Beadleston. Exceedingly scarce, with only one copy in institutional holdings worldwide, at Harvard's Houghton Library  "Address to the Public. On or before November the 1st, will be Published by E. and C. M'Lean, a Second Series of Boilly's Designs, executed in the same superior and elegant form. October 1, 1823" (inside front wrapper). The first plate is unnumbered and the only one with title, Reading the Will ("La lecture du testament," Les Grimaces 10 in the French original). The remaining six plates are identified only as Grimaces Pl. 1 through Grimaces Pl. 6. Grimaces Pl. 1 is Les Grimaces 1 in the French original; Grimaces Pl. 2 is Les Grimaces 6; Grimaces Pl. 3 is Les Grimaces 3; Grimaces Pl. 4 is Les Grimaces 7; Grimaces Pl. 6 is Les Grimaces 34, "Les Fumeurs et les Priseurs. We've yet to identify the French original of Grimaces Pl. 5 but it is likely within the first ten plates of Recueil de Grimaces."Today, at least outside France, Boilly is best known for his lithographs. Although credited with having drawn the first lithograph in France in 1802, he did not return to the medium until 1822, when he more or less abondoned oil painting. The caricatural aspects of his lithographic work go back to the English caricaturists Cruikshank, Gillray, and Rowlandson and the earlier innovations of Hogarth. His most popular series of lithographs, Recueil de Grimaces, was published between 1823 and 1828... The vignetted subjects of these prints appear to be cut out and applied to a plain background, a format also used by Pigal during the Restoration. The series was so popular that Philipon's printer Aubert re-published it in 1837 under the new title Groupes physionomiques... "The series Recueil de Grimaces, published over the course of five years, included ninety-six lithographs... Boilly's popularity during the Restoration was largely due to this series. The interest in expressive heads had precedent in France... During the late eighteenth century, physiognomy, the art of reading inner character by means of facial expressions, was popularized by engravings illustrating Lavater's well-known Essays on Physiognomy, which may well have influenced the format of Boilly's Recueil de Grimaces' (The Charged Image: French Lithographic Caricature). The son of a wood-carver, Louis-Léopold Boilly lived in Douai until he was seventeen years of age, when he went to Arras to receive instruction in trompe-l'oeil painting at Domenica Doncre before moving to Paris in 1785. Between 1789 and 1791 he executed eight small scenes on moralizing and amorous subjects for the Avignon collector Esprit-Claude-François Calvet (1728–1810), including The Visit (1789; Saint-Omer, Musée Hôtel Sandelin). He exhibited at the Salon between 1791 and 1824 and received a gold medal at the Salon in 1804. These paintings thoroughly observed and reflected all aspects of urban life, its costumes and its habits, between the revolutionary period and the Restoration. In 1823, Boilly produced a series of humorous lithographies entitled Grimaces. In 1833, at a time when his popularity was declining, he was admitted to the Légion d’honneur and the Institut de France. His three sons, Julien Léopold (1796-1874), Édouard (1799-1854) and Alphonse Léopold (1801-1867), were also painters. The Art of Louis-Léopold Boilly, p. 122-123.Alfred Nash Beadleston, Sr. (1848–1915), partner in the Beadleston & Woerz Empire brewery of New York City, made headlines when, in 1909, the 60 year old Beadleston married 21 year old Helen F. Hazard (1888–1937), daughter of Edward Clarke Hazard of the grocery firm E. C. Hazard and Company, thus uniting stale old beer and ripe fresh groceries in one cart down the supermarket aisle.

Tooley 257.       Saint-Pierre [Martinique], Fleurot 1823 - In-8 de 137 pp. Broché, couverture bleue de l'époque. Première édition. Une très rare impression de la Martinique.         Plans Raisonnés de Toutes les Espèces de Jardins

Paris: Lebègue, 1823. Paris: Lebègue, 1823. Second edition, folio, half-title, [2], 56 (pages 29-32 misbound after page 36), [2, errata leaf]pp. 57 lithographed plates, orig. boards, rubbed at extremities, with a rather crude cloth reback. The second edition of these interesting and beautiful designs for landscaped gardens, by Gabriel Thouin (1747-1829), brother of the celebrated botanist André Thouin to whom the work is dedicated. Strongly influenced by contemporary English garden designs and the idea of the "picturesque", these parks are noteworthy for their elegance and ease which retains some of the great French tradition of formal gardening. There are designs for municipal and private parks and also for fruit gardens, orangeries, vegetable plantations etc. The margins of the plates, beautifully lithographed by C. Motte, show designs for buildings meant to adorn the gardens; among the more exotic there are several ruins, both classical and mediaeval, Chinese pavilions, arabic coffee houses, pagodas and a host of other small buildings and garden ornaments.         Adventures of Johnny Newcome in the Navy

, 1823. 1823. Written While the Insane Author Was Living in a Gravel Pit[WILLIAMS, Charles, illustrator]. MITFORD, John. The Adventures of Johnny Newcome in the Navy. A Poem, In Four Cantos, With Notes. The Third Edition. London: Published for the Author and sold by Sherwood, Neely and Jones [et al], 1823. Third edition in book form, originally issued 1819 in eight monthly parts. Quarto (10 3/16 x 6 3/16 in; 259 x 158 mm). vii, [1, To the Binder], 284 pp. Twenty hand-colored aquatint engravings with tissue guards. Handsomely bound (ca. 1895) by Samuel Tout of London (stamp-signed) in full deep crimson morocco with gilt-tooled corner-pieces and rolls. Gilt-rolled board edges. Gilt-ruled raised bands, gilt decorated and ornamented compartments. Broad turn-ins with gilt-tooled corner-pieces. Top edge gilt. Original paper backstrip with printed label preserved at rear. With the nautical bookplate of James Stewart Geikie, M.D. A fine copy. Not to be confused with an earlier book - also a poem in four cantos - with the same title by Alfred Burton with illustrations by Thomas Rowlandson published in 1818. It is a common mistake to presume that Alfred Burton was a pseudonym for John Mitford and that the two books are one and the same; many library records are littered with this misinformation, as is Wikipedia. Hardie declares that this Mitford was an "open imitation" of the Burton. This edition with the Williams plates appears far less frequently than the Rowlandson illustrated edition of 1818."Johnny Newcome" was British slang for a raw recruit, Army or Navy.John Mitford (1782-1831) “was a member of the elder branch of the family of Mitford of Mitford Castle in Northumberland…In April 1795…he entered the navy as midshipman of the Victory, in which he went out to the Mediterranean, and was present in the battle off Toulon on 13 July 1795. In the following year he was moved into the Zealous with Captain (afterwards Sir Samuel) Hood, and in her was present in the disastrous attack on Santa Cruz in July 1797, and at the battle of the Nile 1-2 Aug. 1798…According to his own account, after drinking freely on Christmas day 1800, he insulted his captain and left the service, that is to say, deserted; but as he was with Hood in 1801 in the Venerable the desertion may have been only imagined..."In 1814 Mitford was discharged from the navy as insane, and he took to journalism and strong drink…He is said to have edited the ‘Scourge, or Monthly Expositor of Imposture and Folly,’ which, after running for five years, died in December 1815; but though he contributed to the last four volumes, it does not appear that he was the editor. After this he wrote ‘The Adventures of Johnny Newcome in the Navy, a Poem in four Cantos’...The publisher who employed him found that the only way to make him work was to keep him without money. He therefore limited him to a shilling a day, which Mitford expended on two pennyworth of bread and cheese and an onion, and the balance on gin. With this, and his day's supply of paper and ink, he repaired to an old gravel-pit in Battersea Fields, and there wrote and slept till it was time to take in his work and get his next shilling. For forty-three days he is said to have lived in this manner…The poem is in octosyllabic verse, reeled off with the most careless ease, but the lines scan, the rhymes are good, and the ‘yarns’ such as might have been heard any day in the midshipman's berth...His other literary work was anonymous. He is said to have written ‘a libelous life of Sir John Sylvester,’ recorder of the city of London; to have edited ‘The Bon Ton Magazine,’ and to have been kept the while by his publisher in a cellar, with a candle, a bottle of gin, and a rag of old carpet for a coverlet. In 1827 he contributed a memoir of William Mitford the historian to the ‘Literary Gazette’…But Mitford had lost the power of distinguishing truth from falsehood. Ragged and filthy in his person, he was no doubt the John Mitford described by Captain Brenton as ‘lodging over a coal-shed in some obscure street near Leicester Square’…All attempts made by his friends to reclaim him failed. He was editing a paper called the ‘Quizzical Gazette’ at the time of his death, which took place in St. Giles's workhouse on 24 Dec. 1831” (D.N.B.).Illustrator Charles Williams (b.? - 1830) was a British caricaturist, etcher and illustrator. Between 1799 and 1815 he was chief caricaturist for S.W. Fores, a prominent British publisher of prints. He worked in a style similar to James Gillray. In his earlier works, Williams used the pseudonyms Ansell or Argus; with George Cruikshank and others he illustrated The Every-Day Book by William Hone, edited 1825–26. In addition to the work under notice he illustrated Dr Syntax in Paris (1820); My Cousin In the Army (1822); and The Tour of Doctor Prosody (1822).Victorian binder Samuel Tout worked out of Nassau Street in Soho, London 1868-79. He then partnered with William Coward in a bindery in Whitechapel but from 1880-1898 continued on his own in the same location.Abbey, Life 340. Tooley 332. Prideaux, p. 304. Hardie, p. 173.

        Humorous Designs

London: E. & C. M'Lean, 1823. - Scarce First British Appearance of Boilly's GrimacesBOILLY, Louis-Léopold. His most popular series of lithographs, Recueil de Grimaces, was published between 1823 and 1828. The vignetted subjects of these prints appear to be cut out and applied to a plain background, a format also used by Pigal during the Restoration. The series was so popular that Philipon's printer Aubert re-published it in 1837 under the new title Groupes physionomiques. "The series Recueil de Grimaces, published over the course of five years, included ninety-six lithographs. Boilly's popularity during the Restoration was largely due to this series. The interest in expressive heads had precedent in France. Familienglück
