        D.D. Fauna Novae Hollandiae...

Uppsala: Royal Academy Press, 1822. Small quarto, pp. [ii], 8; in modern cloth. A scarce and significant academic paper, this was the first serious attempt at compiling a formal fauna of Australia, in the form of a dissertation presented by Huss before Carl Thunberg, Linnaeus's great disciple and successor.Thunberg, using the traditional method of publishing his own work through the medium of his students' dissertations, 'mapped' much of the flora and fauna of South Africa, China, Japan, and, in this instance, Australia. His prolific output included especially important work on both the botany and the zoology of South Africa and the far east, but this is his only work that deal specifically with Australia. It is interesting to note that a large proportion of the animals noted are in fact insects, as they were most seriously collected by Banks and Solander. Fine.

Paris: 1822. Engraved map, 495 x 340 mm., mounted. Attractive cartographic rarity arising from the visit of Louis and Rose de Freycinet to Sydney in 1819. This map of the Cumberland plain is an example of a little-known first state (without plate number); it was prepared for inclusion in the official voyage account of the expedition. It reflects Freycinet's innate skill as a map-maker and is filled with detail reflecting the extent to which the French commander and his officers travelled within the region (for example, three members of the expedition - Quoy, Pellion and Gaudichaud - were accompanied as far as Bathurst by William Lawson).Freycinet and his wife enjoyed warm hospitality during their time in Sydney now that Britain and France. Free from suspicion, they were permitted to inspect the settlement unhindered, in contrast to his previous visit as an officer aboard the Baudin expedition during the Napoleonic Wars. Fine condition.

12 vol. in 16, leg. coeva in mezza pelle con nervi e punte, doppio tass. al dorso con tit. e fregi in oro, sguardie in carta pettinata. Ex-libris. - Rara edizione originale.

Paris: Andrieu & Puymaurin, 1822. Silver medal, 50 mm, toned. A very good example of the rare silver medal commemorating the voyage of Louis-Isidore Duperrey to the Pacific. Duperrey was perhaps Freycinet's greatest protégé, having served as Lieutenant aboard the Uranie during the voyage around the world. Duperrey began petitioning for his own command of a similar expedition immediately on his return to France.Duperrey's own voyage was one of the greatest of the French grands voyages to the Pacific. The expedition set out from Toulon on 11 August 1822, with the intention of collecting scientific data and specimens, but also instructed to report on the possibility of establishing a penal colony in Western Australia. Duperrey had as his second-in-command Dumont d'Urville, who was to become the most experienced French commander in the Pacific. While science led the expedition, there was also an unspoken goal of discovering where France might carve out an empire in the South Pacific. His voyage was of some 73,000 miles, with major destinations including Australia, New Zealand, and New Guinea.By far the greatest contributions of the expedition were scientific, cartographic and ethnographic, and the Duperrey voyage account is a famously sumptuous production, with exquisite coloured plates.Of some rarity: a bronze version is recorded in the Rex Nan Kivell collection of the National Library of Australia. A little scuffed above the bust, but very fine.

Enumeratio Plantarum Horti Regii Botanici Berolinensis...

Berolini (Berlin): G. Reimer, 1821-, 1821-1822. Two volumes, octavo, untrimmed and largely unopened, modern marbled wrappers. Greatly revised and expanded second edition of the plants of the Berlin Botanic Garden. The work was first issued in 1809 by Willdenow, but his death in 1812, and the tremendous influx of exotic plants after 1815 meant that a revised edition was a priority. The work was prepared by Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link (1767-1851), a botanist who had been taught by the great Göttingen scientist Blumenbach, and who worked across Europe before his appointment to Berlin in 1815. Link took it upon himself to greatly expand the Berlin gardens, adding thousands of new specimens and publishing widely. A study of the book shows that Link was well-positioned to take over from Willdenow, and it is possible to map a steady and impressive influx of exotics into Berlin: the two varieties of banksias present in 1809, for example, had by the time of Link's catalogue become an impressive eleven. Some foxing, very good condition.

Paris: Leblanc, no date, but after 1822. Two volumes, octavo, and small folio atlas; the atlas with separate title, map and 25 lithographic plates; text in mid-nineteenth century quarter green roan trade binding with gilt ornament, atlas in more recent quarter green roan to match. First edition: variant issue. A very good set of this significant narrative of the Freycinet expedition, one of the most important of all voyages to the Pacific. This wonderful, informal account of the voyage is written in the form of letters to a friend by the voyage's official artist Jacques Arago, and has a fine series of lithographs by him. The images, which would reappear in different forms in the many subsequent versions of Arago's narrative, are well known for their vivid even eccentric character, lively and arresting images of the people Arago encountered, with a distinct preference for the unusual or the grotesque. This set is a variant issue of the first edition, with undated cancel title pages for the two text volumes; its reissue may well indicate a failure of the first edition to sell out, quite at odds with the apparently endless popularity of Arago's subsequent versions of his voyage memoir. The text and plates of the atlas are identical to the first edition with the title-page dated 1822.Although a lavish publication in its own right, Arago's "unofficial" account appeared years before the much grander official account of Freycinet himself even began publication, and was so popular that it would have been the source of much of what was known about the voyage. Arago, by all accounts a mercurial and innovative fellow, broke away from the well-established 'canon' of voyage literature in preparing this narrative. As he boasts, much of the cumbersome detail such as wind, tides and navigational information has been omitted, resulting in a lighter, and more readable book. 'These entertaining letters, written in a lively and witty literary style, provide vivid descriptions of the topography and the inhabitants of the Pacific islands' (Hill). The Uranie, with a crew of 125 under the command of Captain Louis de Freycinet, entered the Pacific from the west to make scientific observations on geography, magnetism, and meteorology. Arago was the artist of the expedition, which visited Western Australia, Timor, Hawaii, and New South Wales. The text is peppered with Arago's personal and insightful comments on the places they visited, with long sections devoted to Western Australia and especially to New South Wales, where Arago gives an interesting account of colonial society at the close of the Macquarie era. There are good descriptions of Sydney, and the explorers' visits to Camden and the Blue Mountains. The French were entertained handsomely by the governor and other members of the local aristocracy, with expeditions to the country estates of the Macarthurs, the Oxleys and the Kings the order of the day.Forbes notes two variants of this issue (see 538), without establishing any precedence. Some foxing (mostly moderate and almost entirely confined to tissue-guards in atlas), previous owner's name to title page of the atlas in an old cursive hand, some quaint children's drawings in graphite to reverse of a few of the plates.

Ontdekkingsreis in de Zuid-zee en naar de Berings-Straat, in de jaren 1815, 1816, 1817, en 1818...

Amsterdam: Johannes van der Hey, 1822. Three volumes, each with engraved title-page (the last hand-coloured), four hand-coloured plates and three folding plates, five folding maps, an excellent set in early twentieth-century vellum, decorated gilt and blind. Fine set in vellum of the uncommon Dutch edition of the Kotzebue voyage to the Pacific, the second Russian scientific expedition. Kotzebue's voyage is one of the great Pacific exploration accounts. This famous voyage narrative is particularly important for its descriptions of Alaska, California (including the first scientific account of the state flower, the Golden Poppy), Hawaii and Micronesia; Lada-Mocarski describes the account of Alaska as 'rich in early original source material.''A Dutch edition of the first Kotzebue voyage, translated by P.G. Witsen Geysbeek, with prefaces by the translator in volume I and II and footnotes throughout. The three hand-coloured portraits in volume II are "Tameamea, Konig der Sandwich-Eilanden" (p. 28), a version of the "red vest" portrait by Choris; "Rarick" (p. 130); and "Kadu" (p. 230). A folding plate in volume II... depicts the heiau and Kamehameha's residence at Kailua, Kona. The hand-coloured vignette on the volume III title is of the butterfly named for Kamehameha' (Forbes). A fourth hand-coloured plate in the first volume depicts "Inwoners van Kotzebue-Sond."The expedition rounded Cape Horn and visited Chile, Easter Island, the Marshall Islands, Hawaii and the North American coast, making an unsuccessful search for a Northwest passage. The Rurik sailed along the California coast, stopping at San Francisco; Kotzebue describes the missions, and the work is considered one of the most important early accounts of the state. Kotzebue made a stop in Hawaii in November-December 1816, revisiting again in September-October 1817, anchoring off Hawaii and Oahu. The Hawaiian portion is extensive with important observations on life and customs during the reign of Kamehameha I, whose famous "red vest" portrait by Choris is one of the illustrations. Some of the spare spine labels noted by Forbes removed; some toning but an excellent set in early twentieth-century vellum, decorated in gilt and blind, spines darkened.

Tooley 413. Grolier Rowlandson 48. Martin Hardie, 174-75. Very Good"The last of the genuine or 'authorized' Syntax books" (Abbey), first issued in eight monthly parts. As early as 1809, the publisher Ackermann had hired Combe to write the letterpress to accompany many of Rowlandson's most successful illustrations, including those for the final volume of the "Microcosm of London" and perhaps especially for the illustrations that resulted in the series of comic poetry for which Combe is still most famous, and which earned him his best-known nickname, Doctor Syntax: The Tour of Doctor Syntax, in Search of the Picturesque and its two sequels (1812, 1820, 1821), The English Dance of Death (1815, 1816), The Dance of Life (1817), and finally The History of Johnny Quae Genus, the Little Foundling of the Late Doctor Syntax (1822). "Combining light-hearted satire of William Gilpin's theory of the picturesque in art with a central character modelled on Cervantes' Don Quixote and Henry Fielding's Parson Adams, Combe created a lovable eccentric whose misadventures on the road structure the Tour. For over a century the many editions and numerous imitations of the Tour attested to the popularity of Combe's humorous hero."         Théorie Analytique de la Chaleur.

Paris: Firmin Didot, 1822. First edition of the first mathematical study of heat diffusion, the first major mathematization of a branch of physics outside mechanics. "This work marks an epoch in the history of both pure and applied mathematics. It is the source of all modern methods in mathematical physics ... The gem of Fourier's great book is 'Fourier series'" (Cajori, A History of Mathematics, p. 270). "In this groundbreaking study, arguing that previous theories of mechanics advanced by such outstanding scientists as Archimedes, Galileo, Newton and their successors did not explain the laws of heat, Fourier set out to study the mathematical laws governing heat diffusion and proposed that an infinite mathematical series may be used to analyse the conduction of heat in solids: this is now known as the 'Fourier Series'. His work paved the way for modern mathematical physics" (Introduction to the 2009 reprint by Cambridge University Press). ?Dibner 154; Evans 37; Sparrow 68; Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 26; Norman 824; En Français dans le Texte 232. "There is no doubt that today this book stands as one of the most daring, innovative, and influential works of the nineteenth century on mathematical physics. The methods that Fourier used to deal with heat problems were those of a true pioneer because he had to work with concepts that were not yet properly formulated. He worked with discontinuous functions when others dealt with continuous ones, used integral as an area when integral as an anti-derivative was popular, and talked about the convergence of a series of functions before there was a definition of convergence ... such methods were to prove fruitful in other disciplines such as electromagnetism, acoustics and hydrodynamics. It was the success of Fourier's work in applications that made necessary a redefinition of the concept of function, the introduction of a definition of convergence, a reexamination of the concept of integral, and the ideas of uniform continuity and uniform convergence. It also provided motivation for the discovery of the theory of sets, was in the background of ideas leading to measure theory, and contained the germ of the theory of distributions" (González-Velasco, p. 428). "There had been a long 18th-century debate about trigonometric series in connection with solutions to the wave equation and the shape of a vibrating string. On the one hand it seemed reasonable that a string could have any continuous initial shape -- that was Euler's view -- on the other hand the equation could only be solved by functions to which the calculus applied ... Fourier proposed to reopen the debate by boldly asserting that any solution to the heat equation, which he was the first to derive, could be written as an infinite sum of sines and cosines for the simple reason that any function could be written that way. This is a dramatic claim, and it was still more so in his day, because the consensus was that however broadly a function might be defined all the functions that arise in practice are finite sums of familiar ones: polynomials, sines, cosines, exponentials and logarithms, nth roots, and the like. They could also be infinite power series, and indeed infinite trigonometric series, but nonetheless they had the usual sorts of properties, such as smoothly varying graphs. No-one said so in so many words, but it is clear that the expectation was there, and Fourier in particular simply assumed that every function is continuous, as is clear from his account of the coefficients of a Fourier series ... One of the dramas introduced by Fourier's series was that they readily flout all these expectations ... at various stages in the 19th century they provided fresh, and disturbing, examples of just what functions could do. Contrary to what Fourier himself believed, if Cauchy's work began the exploration of what rigorous mathematics can do, Fourier series can indicate just what theory is up against ... "The Théorie Analytique de la Chaleur, in which Fourier presented his ideas, was written in several stages. He submitted a version to the Paris Academy of Sciences in 1807, but although Laplace, Lacroix and Monge were in favour of publishing it, Lagrange blocked publication, apparently because its treatment of trigonometric series differed markedly from the way he, Lagrange, had stipulated in the 1750s. Another chance came in 1810, when the Academy of Sciences announced a prize competition on heat diffusion. Fourier submitted a revised memoir, which won, but was criticised for a lack of rigour and generality. Fourier thought the criticism unfair, but revised it again, and the resulting book came out in 1822 (after Lagrange's death and when Fourier's standing was rising in the Academy). "Joseph Fourier was born in Auxerre, France in 1768. He was orphaned at the age of 9 and placed in the town's military school where he learned mathematics and a sense of civic responsibility. He was nearly guillotined at the height of the Terror in 1794, but the sentence was withdrawn and Fourier was able to go to the Ecole Normale. In 1795 he was appointed an assistant lecturer at the Ecole Polytechnique, working under Lagrange and Monge, and in 1798 Monge, a prominent supporter of Napoleon, selected Fourier to go on the French expedition to Egypt. After the British defeated them there, Fourier returned to France in 1801, hoping to resume his work at the Ecole Polytechnique, but Napoleon had been impressed by his organisational talents and sent him instead to be the prefect of Governor of the Department of Isere.' He was so successful here that Napoleon made him a Baron in 1808, and in1809 he finished his contribution to the Description d'Egypt, a massive account and glorification of ancient Egypt based on the surveys that French engineers had made of Egyptian pyramids and other remains. "The eventual defeat of Napoleon was the lowest point of Fourier's life, but in 1816 he obtained a position as Director of the Bureau of Statistics for the Department of the Seine, a position which left him good time for research. His political enemies now in power delayed his appointment to the reformed Academy of Sciences for a year but he eventually rose to become the permanent secretary of the Academy in 1822 and to be elected to the Académie Française in 1827. He died in 1830 as the result of complications from an illness caught in Egypt" (Gray, pp. 13-15). González-Velasco, 'Connections in mathematical analysis: the case of Fourier series,' American Mathematical Monthly 99 (1992), 427-41. Gray, The real and the complex: A history of analysis in the 19th century, 2015. 4to (258 x 202 mm), pp. [4], [i], ii-xxii, 639, [1: blank] and two engraved plates, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, paper flaw to lower right corner of first gathering, far outside the the printing area. Fourier showed that heat diffusion was subject to simple observable physical constants that could be expressed mathematically. While Galileo and Newton had revolutionized the study of nature by discerning mathematical laws in the movement of solids and fluids, this approach had not been satisfactorily applied to the study of heat before Fourier. His work had major repercussions for the development of both physics and pure mathematics: first, he extended the range of rational mechanics beyond the fields defined in Newton's Principia, establishing an essential branch of modern physics. Secondly, his invention of unprecedentedly powerful mathematical tools for the solution of equations "raised problems in mathematical analysis that motivated much of the leading work in that field for the rest of the century and beyond" (DSB). "Fourier's most celebrated work in which he succeeded in putting the science of heat on an analytical or mathematical basis" (Honeyman). "Fourier's application of new methods of mathematical analysis to the study of heat extended rational mechanics to fields outside of those defined in Newton's Principia, enabling the systematization of a wide range of phenomena. To further his study of heat, Fourier introduced the Fourier series and Fourier integrals." (Norman). "Fourier's methods find their widest application to problems of vibration such as in heat, sound and in fluid motion" (Dibner). Near Fine....

Darstellung der Neuen Entdeckungen uber die Electricitat und den Magnetismus von Oerstedt, Arago, Ampere, H. Davy, Biot, Erman, Schweigger, de la Rive u.f.w. . aus dem Franzsischen.

      - Leipzig 1822. Octavo contemporary (or original?) marbled boards (spine quite rubbed but all perfectly solid and very acceptable); [2],118pp and two folding plates. A bit of spotting but a very good, fresh copy. First published in the same year in Paris (Expose des Nouvelles Decouvertes sur l'Electricite et le Magnetisme), this seems to be the only contemporary translation of this quite significant little book. Oerstedt made the basic discovery in the relationship between electricity and magnetism in 1820 and Ampere then 'not only evolved the complete explanation of all the electro-magnetic phenomena observed before him, but predicted many hitherto unknown' (Mottelay). Edition Originale.

¶ "very valuable Treatise.... (Ampère) discovered the ponderomotive action of one electric current on another, and, by a series of well-chosen experiments, he established the elementary laws of electro-dynamic action... By his beautiful theory of molecular currents, he gave a theoretical explanation of that connection between electricity and magnetism which had been the dream of previous investigators " Mottelay, Biblio.       Printed for G. Walker, J. Akerman, et al, London 1822 - Handsome early edition ("A New Edition") of Smith's landmark treatise, "the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM), complete in three matched, beautifully bound octavo volumes. x,499,[1]; vii,[1],518,[6]; viii,[1],465[465 misnumbered 365],[1],[50, index to whole]pp. Contemporary (probably original) full tree calf, richly gilt-tooled flat spines in five compartments, red morocco lettering pieces and black leather numbering pieces gilt, plain period end papers. Early ink signature to first blank of each volume of "T. C. Amory," likely one of a number of nineteenth-century Bostonians, perhaps businessman Thomas Coffin Amory (1796-1865) or lawyer, politician, biographer, and poet Thomas Coffin Amory (1812-1889). Bindings bright and attractive, text tightly bound and uncommonly free of foxing. A magnificent production. PMM 221. Gordon, Landmarks in English Literature, p. 16. Lowndes 2417. Goldsmiths' 23447. Grolier, English 100, 57. Kress C976. Kress (Vanderblue), p. 5. Tribe 30. According to Gordon, "No other English book of the eighteenth century has had a greater influence," to which the ODNB adds: "The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status . . ." "Basing his argument on a careful examination of facts, [Smith] found labor to be the source of national wealth and the true standard of value. He advocated an increase of capital as bringing an increase of productive labor, and freedom of industry and commerce as a means toward this end."

(SEMELAIGNE, I, p.174 et 179)

"It is a very important document for the study of events in Bahia before Independence, and was used by Varnhagen for his Historia Geral. It is a very rare work today" (Borba de Moraes I, 128).
