        Tour through Paris

1822. First Edition . (SAMS, William). A Tour through Paris. London: William Sams, [1825]. Tall folio (11 by 15 inches), modern full brown calf, raised bands. $5800.Second edition of this vividly illustrated tour of the streets and inhabitants of early 19th-century Paris, with 21 finely hand-colored folio aquatint plates. The vibrant plates feature ""Street Characters""—scenes of everyday city life rather than stately monuments, such as jugglers, vendors, dancers, porters, stilt-walkers, itinerants, fishmongers, flower sellers, soldiers, water-carriers, and the wealthy on promenade. Plates watermarked ""J. Whatman/ Turkey Mill/ 1825."" First published in 1824 in an oblong format under the title A Tour of Paris, beginning in 1822 with four parts with a total of 16 plates; the fifth part with the remaining five plates was issued in 1824. The present edition was issued shortly thereafter, with a new title and letterpress text reset to conform with an upright layout rather than oblong. ""This edition is often cited as 1822-24, but, apart from a study of watermarks in a large number of copies, there seems to be no way of dating itÂ… watermarks as late as 1833 are known"" (Abbey). Abbey, Travel 114. Tooley 443, 444. One plate with a neatly repaired closed marginal tear. Plates generally fine, hand-coloring vivid. A near-fine copy of this lovely illustrated volume.

Journal of a Cruise made to the Pacific Ocean, by Captain David Porter,

New York: Wiley & Halsted, , 1822. in the United States Frigate Essex, in the Years 1812, 1813, and 1814. Second Edition. To which is now added, the Transactions at Valparaíso Â… the Fate of the Party left at Madison's Island Â… and an Introduction, in which the charges contained in the Quarterly Review, of the First Edition of this Journal are examined Â… 2 volumes octavo (218 × 132 mm). contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked to style and relined, red and green morocco labels, flat spine, compartments formed by double rules, gilt foliate devices within. Portrait frontispiece and 7 other plates, folding map - bound in inverted - folding table. A little rubbed, browned as usual, but a very good copy. Second edition, first published, and suppressed, in 1815. This is "the only complete edition, generally regarded as the best one" (Hill). Porter played a key role in American attacks on British commerce during the War of 1812, the only American commander to sail against the British in the Pacific during the conflict. Having failed to rendezvous with Bainbridge and the Constitution at the Cape Verde Islands, Porter rounded the Horn without authority, and began to prey on the British whaling fleet in Pacific waters. Between March and September 1813 the Essex captured or destroyed fourteen vessels and totally disrupted British whaling on the West coast of South America, "doing damage Â… to the extent of half a million pounds." One of the captured vessels he fitted out as a naval ship, calling her the Essex Junior. However, these successes led to the dispatch of Phoebe and Cherub to suppress his predations. On 28 March 1814, after a lengthy blockade, the four ships engaged in a heavy storm off Valparaíso. Porter was completely outgunned, but fought on against the odds for two and a half hours, only surrendering when he lost his main topmast to the wind, and 155 out of his 225 crew were dead. On his return to America he received a hero's welcome as the man who had made the longest voyage on an American warship in the War of 1812. From 1815-22 he served on the Board of Navy Commissioners, giving this up to command an expedition to suppress slavery in the West Indies. On his return in 1826 he resigned his commission and became commander-in-chief of the Mexican navy, 1826-9, he died in 1843 whilst US minister in Turkey.

THE TRAVELLERS TOUR THROUGH THE UNITED STATES.

New York: F. & R. Lockwood, 1822. What is offered is the map portion only of the first American board game. Engraved map, hand-colored; measures 28.2x38.2 cm (approximately 11x15"). The map has been backed on board, the entirety is lightly to moderately browned and faded, there are several tears at the edge without loss, and there are two stains. This map is a whole sheet, which is unlike the three copies found on Worldcat/OCLC, which are instead cut into sections and backed in linen for storage in the slipcase. The map contains 139 numbered unnamed stops, to which according to the teetotum a player would advance, name the numbered city, state the population of the city or be penalized. Not present is the teetotum (a spinning top marked with numbers), game tokens called "traveller's" tokens, the letterpress text sheet, and the slipcase. This is a rare map, and shows two numbered stops in Michigan Territory, the North West Territory and Arkansas Territory but there is no number for Chicago! Map only.. First Edition. Unbound. Good+ condition. Folio.

- 4°, mid-twentieth-century sheep, flat spine with fillets in blind, covers with borders tooled in blind, title in gilt on front cover, marbled endleaves. Very good condition. Old ink signature on title page of A.I.J. [?] de Moraes. 106 pp., (1 l. errata). *** FIRST EDITION. There is a facsimile reprint of Rio de Janeiro, 1973. According to Borba de Moraes, "It is a well-written book on the question of how best to maintain the union between Portugal and Brazil. The author proposes that the king should live alternately in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro, and in the absence of the king each capital should have a regency. He states that although some people predict the separation of the two kingdoms, he refuses to believe this abominable prophecy".There are at least two known copies, one which belonged to J.F. de Almeida Prado (cited by Borba de Moraes) and another which had belonged to J. Silveira Castro, now in the John Carter Brown Library, with manuscript annotations by José Vicente Gomes de Moura asserting that he was the author, and that he had sent the manuscript of the work to Joaquim José Pedro Lopes, editor of the Gazeta universal, who had published it at his cost.*** Borba de Moraes (1983), II, 703-4.

---- 1 Abb. in Ausst. Kat.

Paris: Leblanc,, 1822. 2 volumes text in octavo (206 × 123 mm) and small folio atlas (320 × 235 mm). Attractive recent scarlet straight-grained morocco to style, marbled boards. Text volumes housed in matching cloth slip-case. Atlas with 25 lithographed plates of views and "types", and an engraved track-chart. The text volumes lightly browned and with a scatter of variable foxing, the plates just a touch, largely marginally, browned. First edition. Engaging, and slightly flamboyant epistolary record of Freycinet's circumnavigation by the expedition's official artist. "The Uranie, with a crew of 125 men under the command of Captain Louis de Freycinet, entered the Pacific from the West to make scientific observations on geography, magnetism, and meteorology. Arago was the artist of the expedition, which visited Western Australia, Timor, Hawaii, and New South Wales. The original ship was wrecked off the Falkland Islands. Two months later the expedition continued aboard the Physicienne, which stopped for a time at Rio de Janeiro. Captain Freycinet's wife, Rose Pinon, was smuggled on board at the advent of the voyage and made the complete journey, causing some discord among the crew. Freycinet named an island he discovered after her - Rose Island among the Samoa islands. These entertaining letters, written in a lively and witty literary style, provide vivid descriptions of the topography and the inhabitants of the Pacific Islands. The book achieved great success" (Hill). "The Hawaiian portion of the text, contained on more than 150 pages, records impressions of the artist's stops on Hawaii, Maui, and Oahu. Extensive portions of the text also record the Arago impressions of Australia, Guam, and the Marianas Islands. The artist's main interest (as reflected by the plate subjects) are of peoples encountered. Several of the plates record somewhat gruesome aspects of Hawaiian culture" (Forbes). Many of Arago's images were reworked for use in the official account, but here appear closer to their looser and more Romanitc original form. The atlas enhanced by a tipped-in album leaf with a charming holograph lover's quatrain, signed, by Arago, and entriely characteritic of what we know of the man; "À Zilia. A well-presented and appealing set.

This beautifully produced monograph deals to a large extend with fossils found in the surroundings of the Austrian capital Vienna. However mineralogical matters are also discussed widely. He later lived in Paris and Lausanne, and sold his collection to Georg Gibbs ca. 1800" (Wilson. The History of Mineral Collecting, p. 189). //B.M.(Nat. Hist.)IV, 1657.

        ABÉCÉDAIRE DES PETITS GOURMANDS.

26 original circular watercolour designs by Jean-Charles Develly, executed in sepia & black & white, of which 3 are preliminary watercolour sketches (for 'K' and 'Z' and another for 'etcetera') for this important children's alphabet; all contained in a small drawing book, the title-page reading 'Alphabet des Petits Gourmands. K. 31 Mars 1822.' The cover reading, 'Croquis des petits Gourmands 1822.' The watercolours are circular, measuring seven centimetres in diameter. Though unsigned, we are completely satisfied that they are the work of this important artist, best known for his designs for porcelain decoration at the Sevres factory. As well as being a water-colourist Develly was also an engraver and a lithographer. In the published book, each of the illustrations, which are all printed by lithography, is enclosed within a floral border embellished with kitchen utensils.

Piega editoriale

Hortus Anglicus; or, the Modern English Garden... with Remarks on the Properties of the More Valuable Species...

London: Rivington, 1822. Two volumes, octavo; the original boards, early green cloth spines, original spine labels retained. One of the early works seeking to take the study of exotic botany out of the realm of the professional horticulturalist and make it accessible to the gardeners of Britain. The preface comments that it is based in large part on the second edition of the Hortus Kewensis, but here is adapted and made accessible for students, in part by comparison with the work of Willdenow.Because the work is intended not only to introduce readers "to a knowledge of exotic botany" but also to refer to plants which grow readily in Britain, it is telling to see which Australian plants are excluded: no banksia, for example, but also no bottlebrushes (although a hardy Australian acacia is included). Very good.

A fine copy. ----Brown, Astronomical Atlases p. 65; DSB VI, p. 112. - First edition of Harding's important atlas, the "well-executed and carefully thought out work of a capable observer" (Brown). Harding's career as an astronomer began in 1796 when he became a private tutor in the household of A. H. Schröter, who had a private observatory at Lilienthal, near Bremen. The best observations of great planets during that time were made at Lilienthal, mostly by Harding; and the Vereinigte Astronomische Gesellschaft was founded there. Its primary aim was to make star charts. This aim was realized only by Harding, who drew up a celestial atlas containing about 60,000 stars. While working on the chart, Harding discovered (1804) the third asteroid and named it Juno Georgia in honor of George III. He also discovered three comets. Fine.

¶ "very valuable Treatise.... (Ampère) discovered the ponderomotive action of one electric current on another, and, by a series of well-chosen experiments, he established the elementary laws of electro-dynamic action... By his beautiful theory of molecular currents, he gave a theoretical explanation of that connection between electricity and magnetism which had been the dream of previous investigators " Mottelay, Biblio.
