        MOBILE COMMERCIAL REGISTER

Mobile, Alabama, 1822. Printed handbill, 6 1/4 x 8 1/2 in., advertising for new subscriptions and offering incentives for those who obtained ten or more new subscribers. Archival repairs on verso along old fold lines and at left margin, slightly affecting a few letters in the text. Some browning, else a nice example. The ad announces that: "Six months have elapsed since the publication of this paper commenced, during which time its patronage has considerably increased...." It intends to continue its coverage of Commerce and Agriculture, Weekly Prices Current, etc. and to avoid political discussions as much as possible. The Register produced both a country paper and a city paper, published twice a week for eight months of the year, and once a week the remaining four. The Mobile Commercial Register was founded in 1821 by Jonathan Battelle and John W. Townsend. The first issue was published Dec. 10, 1821. Battelle, a Bostonian, had also started the "Montgomery Republican" earlier that same year. According to the "City Directory and History of Montgomery Alabama," [Montgomery, AL: 1878] Battelle had had a printing press, type, cases and other fixtures delivered to Savannah in 1820 and hauled to Montgomery. We found only three earlier separately printed Mobile imprints, and one other from 1822 (besides newspapers) on OCLC or in Ellison.

[OIL PORTRAIT OF MAJOR BENJAMIN O'FALLON]

[Washington, 1822. Oil on canvas, 30 x 24 1/2 inches. In an elaborately carved gilt wood frame with some chipping at corners and outer edges, and separation at upper right corner of inner frame. Original canvas relined, but image in overall fine condition. Condition report available. A handsome, large, and striking oil portrait of Major Benjamin O'Fallon, one of the leading figures in the early Missouri fur trade, and one of the founders of the military post at Council Bluffs, later named Fort Atkinson. Executed in Washington, D.C., around 1822 by Charles Bird King, it is one of the few existing portraits of an important figure in early expansion into the trans-Mississippi West. Benjamin O'Fallon was born in 1793 in Kentucky, into a prominent Bluegrass family. He was the nephew of William Clark, leader of the Lewis and Clark expedition and later governor of the Missouri Territory. From an early age he was raised in St. Louis under the guardianship of his uncle. He therefore came naturally to the Indian trade and exploration, making his first foray into trading in 1816. In 1819 he was appointed Indian agent for the upper Missouri and given the rank of major. He accompanied Stephen H. Long on an expedition to Council Bluffs in 1819, arriving there on Sept. 19, 1819 and establishing winter quarters there. Edwin James, in his account of the Long expedition, describes an Indian Council held there by O'Fallon on Oct. 3, as well as many other events in the first winter at the post. O'Fallon remained Indian commissioner for the Upper Missouri until 1827, and Fort Atkinson remained his headquarters when he was upriver, although he probably resided in St. Louis or Missouri the majority of the time. Charles Bird King (1785-1862) was born in Newport, Rhode Island. He trained in London under Benjamin West. He eventually settled in Washington, D.C. in 1819, calculating it was a good base for one who sought to earn a living mainly by portraiture. King painted the likenesses of many key Washington figures over the course of his career, and was therefore in the right place when Commissioner of Indian Affairs Thomas L. McKenney decided to add portraits of leading Indian chiefs to the collection of artifacts he had begun when he became superintendent of Indian trade in 1816. McKenney conceived the idea of an Indian portrait gallery at the time of the visit of a large delegation of Indians from the Upper Missouri to Washington in 1821-22, and King was commissioned to execute the portraits. The present portrait of Benjamin O'Fallon was almost certainly taken at the same time, since O'Fallon in his capacity as Indian agent accompanied the delegation to Washington, and it is also surmised that O'Fallon personally arranged the sittings with the Native American leaders for King. An important portrait of a prominent western explorer and trader, by a significant American painter.

THE HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, FROM ITS FIRST SETTLEMENT TO THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE REVOLUTION

Petersburg, Va, 1822. Four volumes. Folding table in third volume. Late 19th-century three-quarter morocco and marbled boards; rebacked in calf, spines gilt. Some light wear to extremities. Light scattered foxing and soiling, even toning. Very good. Untrimmed. The scarce second issue of Burk's important history of Virginia, comprised of the original sheets issued with new titlepages, here present with the very rare fourth volume. The latter volume, issued years after the rest of the set, was largely destroyed by fire and only a few copies have survived. The author, well known as a dramatist, was an Irish emigrant and enthusiastic Jeffersonian. After his death in a duel in 1808, the fourth volume was written by Skelton Jones and Louis Girardin, supposedly with the aid of Thomas Jefferson, to whom it is dedicated. That volume covers 1775 to 1781. Jefferson also assisted Burk in the research for the second and third volumes by lending him manuscripts, newspapers, and other materials, and Burk quotes Jefferson's NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA... throughout his HISTORY... (see Sowerby for details). "The lengthy appendices are of the highest historical importance" - Eberstadt. This second issue is not noted by Howes or Sabin, and fewer than twenty copies are located in OCLC. SHOEMAKER 8217. HAYNES 2498. PRELIMINARY CHECKLIST FOR PETERSBURG 137. HOWES B971 (1st ed).         CELESTIAL NAVIGATION FOR MARINERS: Sternkarte nebst Anweisung zur Kenntni§ der vornehmsten Fixsterne, nach ihrem wechselseitigen Stande. Insonderheit zum Gebrauch fŸr Seefahrende. Herausgegeben vom kšniglichen DŠnischen Seekartenarchive.

Copenhagen: Kšnigliches DŠnisches Seekartenarchiv, . 1822 - Small Oblong Folio (32 x 40.3 cm / 12.5 x 16 inches): Collation Complete Ð 5 (letterpress text, with 2 coloured woodcut vignettes on p. 2), [1 (letterpress ephemeris table)], 1 engraved celestial map; bound in original light blue-grey paper covers with decorative printed pastedown label to front cover (Very Good, internally clean and crisp; covers with marginal fraying and wear to spine). A very rare and excellent treatise on celestial navigation for mariners, anchored by a custom-made chart of the Northern Celestial Hemisphere, by the esteemed Danish astronomer and hydrographer Poul de Lovenorn. This fine treatise is a guide to celestial navigation for mariners, written by Poul de Lovenorn, one of the eraÕs most important hydrographers and practical astronomers. Published in only this single edition, in April 1822, in Copenhagen, by the Kšnigliches DŠnisches Seekartenarchiv (the Danish Hydrographic Office), it was written in the German language in an effort to reach a wider audience. Here Lovenorn builds upon his 55 years of maritime experience to give an excellent and practically useful guide to celestial navigation on the high seas by the stars of the Northern Hemisphere. Unlike many other such guides, this work is scientifically accurate, yet employs a brilliant economy of expression, allowing the reader to quickly master the necessary concepts in a short matter of time. Fittingly, the title translates to read: ÔMap of the stars and instructions for the knowledge of the most distinguished fixed stars, according to their position on the exchange. Especially for use for sailors. Published by the Royal Danish Sea Chart Archives.Õ Lovenorn notes that most stars appear to move from east to west in the night sky, although, in actuality, it is the earth that is moving, rotating upon its Axis, while the stars are immovable objects (at least on a day-to-day basis). That being said, some stars, notably the Polar, or, North Star, are constants, and appear to remain stationary in the sky, regardless of the observerÕs day-to-day positioning and, as such, all other stars appear to be rotating around this seminal point (as the North Star is located almost directly above the North Pole). In this well-written text, Lovenorn provides a guide for navigating by using imagined lines drawn between the permanent (immovable) starts, which he describes as a Òdeclaration of the accompanying representation of the reciprocal state of the stars and the proof of the principal fixed stars by linesÓ. The text is meant to be read while consulting the Ephemeris Table (which notes the scientific positioning of various key stars) and the chart of the Northern Celestial Hemisphere (centred on the North Star), which features LovenornÕs navigation lines between the various permanent stars. Poul de Lovenorn: Leading Danish Astronomer and Cartographer - Poul the Lovenorn [often known by the German version: Lšwenšrn] (1751 - 1826) was one of the most important figures in the development of astronomy and scientific cartography in Scandinavia, as well as being a senior diplomat and administrator. Lovenorn was born to a good family and entered the Danish naval academy in 1767. He was a stellar student, graduating as a second lieutenant in 1770. He proved to be a virtuoso navigator and astronomer, and this led him to be seconded to serve in the French Navy, which was allied to the Danish crown. While in French service, he became acquainted with several of leading lights of that nationÕs scientific community, notably the great astronomer JŽr™me Lalande. Lovenorn returned to Denmark in 1781, where he was promoted to lieutenant commander. In 1782, he was appointed to lead an important test mission to asses the accuracy of the ne J.A. Armand chronometer, SEE OUR WEB PAGE FOR LONGER DESCRIPTION.

Specimen geographico-historicum, exhibens dissertationem de Ibn Haukalo geographo, nec non descriptionem Iracae Persicae [.].

Leiden, S. & J. Luchtmans, 1822. - Large 4to (221 x 266 mm). 3 parts in one vol. XX, 83, (1), 84, 131, (1) pp. Contemporary full calf, covers ruled in gilt, spine gilt with red label. All edges gilt. Red marbled endpapers. First edition of this important dissertation about Ibn Hawqal and the geography of Iraq, with an edition of the text. Prepared by the Dutch scholar Pieter Johannes Uylenbroek (1797-1844) under the auspices of his professor H. A. Hamaker (1789-1835, cf. Fück 181). The study was re-issued under the title "Iracae persicae descriptio" in the same year. Abu al-Qasim b. Ali Ibn Hawqal al-Nasibi is famous for his mediaeval geography "Surat al-'Ard" ("The face of the Earth"). Clearly more than a mere editor, Ibn Hawqal was a traveller who spent much of his time writing about the areas and things he had seen. He spent the last thirty years of his life traveling to remote parts of Asia and Africa. One of his journeys brought him 20 degrees south of the equator along the East African coast, where he noticed that there were large numbers of people living in areas which the Greeks had said to be uninhabitable. His accurate descriptions were very helpful to travellers. - An excellent, appealingly bound copy. Wilson 104. Brunet III, 27 & VI, 19600. OCLC 15239787. Cf. Macro 1251 (2nd ed.).         Rapids Above Hadley's Falls. No. 4 of the Hudson River Port Folio

Henry Megarey, New York 1822 - Aquatint, coloured by hand, by John Hill, after W.G. Wall Sight size: 16 3/4 x 22 1/2 inches. Framed in wood and gold frame with French mat, framed size: 26 1/4 x 32 1/8 inches. The commentary notes that: "This view of the Rapids was taken from a favourable point between the Falls and Jessup's Landing, where the Hudson sweeps round an elbow of stupendous rocks, just before it takes its leap over the precipice which gives the name to the great falls. The bed of the river is here sunk between two magnificent walls of perpendicular cliffs, which rise to the height of 70 to 80 feet. Towering and massive rocks are, perhaps, the most striking images of solitude and sublimity. The picture before us exhibits images of this character, in their fullest perfection; and, in combination with another feature of the grand and impressive order conveys to the mind a most effective idea of romantic loneliness. The excellence of Mr. Wall's water scenery has been before alluded to." In the summer of 1820 the Irish-born and trained landscape artist William Guy Wall (1792-after 1864) went on an extended sketching tour of the Hudson River Valley and its environs. A selection of Wall's watercolors recording sights on his tour was engraved by the master printmaker John Hill (1770-1850) in The Hudson River Portfolio, published in New York City by Henry J. Megarey between 1821 and 1825. Long considered a cornerstone in the development of American printmaking and landscape painting, its twenty topographical views cover roughly 212 miles of the 315-mile course of the Hudson River. This undertaking paved the way for a wider public appreciation of landscape in the United States. The first series of prints to make Americans aware of the beauty and sublimity of their own scenery, the seminal Portfolio helped to stimulate national pride and cultural identity Deak 320; New York Historical Society notes to an exhibition on the Hudson River School.

Trial of Lieutenant Joel Abbot by the General Naval Court Martial, Holden on Board the U.S. Ship Independence, at the Navy Yard, Charlestown, Massachusetts, on Allegations Made Against Him by Capt. David Porter, Navy Commissioner…

Russell & Gardner,, Boston: 1822 - 8vo, old pebbled cloth with leather corners, spine lettered in gilt with modern morocco, 164, 72, [1] pp. Corners scuffed, some light foxing, removed library plate, top hinge starting, but still firm, pencil note on title, old number on back of title; else very good. In this significant American legal case, Lt. Joel Abbot, stationed at the Charlestown Navy Yard, accused Capt. Isaac Hull (1773-1843), who commanded the U.S.S. Constitution during the War of 1812, of fraud against the U.S. government. Captain David Porter (1780-1843) investigated the charges, realized that Hull was innocent, and in April 1822 turned around and charged Abbot with libel. Specifically, he was accused of "attempting to take from his superior officer, Capt. Isaac Hull, his good name." Abbot was found guilty and removed from service for two years, and then resumed a somewhat successful naval career, rising to the rank of captain. This work contains a good deal of legal correspondence and questioning. Interestingly, in coverage of Capt. Porter and Capt. Hull in the ANB there does not appear to be any mention of this case in their write-ups. Sabin 96807. ANB. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

¶ "very valuable Treatise.... (Ampère) discovered the ponderomotive action of one electric current on another, and, by a series of well-chosen experiments, he established the elementary laws of electro-dynamic action... By his beautiful theory of molecular currents, he gave a theoretical explanation of that connection between electricity and magnetism which had been the dream of previous investigators " Mottelay, Biblio.         Plan du Comté de Cumberland à la Nouvelle-Galles du Sud, (Nouvelle-Hollande) comprenant la division de ce Comté en Districts. Rédigé par Louis de Freycinet.

Paris: 1822. Engraved map, 495 x 340 mm., mounted. Attractive cartographic rarity arising from the visit of Louis and Rose de Freycinet to Sydney in 1819. This map of the Cumberland plain is an example of a little-known first state (without plate number); it was prepared for inclusion in the official voyage account of the expedition. It reflects Freycinet's innate skill as a map-maker and is filled with detail reflecting the extent to which the French commander and his officers travelled within the region (for example, three members of the expedition - Quoy, Pellion and Gaudichaud - were accompanied as far as Bathurst by William Lawson).Freycinet and his wife enjoyed warm hospitality during their time in Sydney now that Britain and France. Free from suspicion, they were permitted to inspect the settlement unhindered, in contrast to his previous visit as an officer aboard the Baudin expedition during the Napoleonic Wars. Fine condition.

Journal of a Cruise made to the Pacific Ocean, by Captain David Porter,

New York: Wiley & Halsted, , 1822. in the United States Frigate Essex, in the Years 1812, 1813, and 1814. Second Edition. To which is now added, the Transactions at Valparaíso Â… the Fate of the Party left at Madison's Island Â… and an Introduction, in which the charges contained in the Quarterly Review, of the First Edition of this Journal are examined Â… 2 volumes octavo (218 × 132 mm). contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked to style and relined, red and green morocco labels, flat spine, compartments formed by double rules, gilt foliate devices within. Portrait frontispiece and 7 other plates, folding map - bound in inverted - folding table. A little rubbed, browned as usual, but a very good copy. Second edition, first published, and suppressed, in 1815. This is "the only complete edition, generally regarded as the best one" (Hill). Porter played a key role in American attacks on British commerce during the War of 1812, the only American commander to sail against the British in the Pacific during the conflict. Having failed to rendezvous with Bainbridge and the Constitution at the Cape Verde Islands, Porter rounded the Horn without authority, and began to prey on the British whaling fleet in Pacific waters. Between March and September 1813 the Essex captured or destroyed fourteen vessels and totally disrupted British whaling on the West coast of South America, "doing damage Â… to the extent of half a million pounds." One of the captured vessels he fitted out as a naval ship, calling her the Essex Junior. However, these successes led to the dispatch of Phoebe and Cherub to suppress his predations. On 28 March 1814, after a lengthy blockade, the four ships engaged in a heavy storm off Valparaíso. Porter was completely outgunned, but fought on against the odds for two and a half hours, only surrendering when he lost his main topmast to the wind, and 155 out of his 225 crew were dead. On his return to America he received a hero's welcome as the man who had made the longest voyage on an American warship in the War of 1812. From 1815-22 he served on the Board of Navy Commissioners, giving this up to command an expedition to suppress slavery in the West Indies. On his return in 1826 he resigned his commission and became commander-in-chief of the Mexican navy, 1826-9, he died in 1843 whilst US minister in Turkey.

THE TRAVELLERS TOUR THROUGH THE UNITED STATES.

New York: F. & R. Lockwood, 1822. What is offered is the map portion only of the first American board game. Engraved map, hand-colored; measures 28.2x38.2 cm (approximately 11x15"). The map has been backed on board, the entirety is lightly to moderately browned and faded, there are several tears at the edge without loss, and there are two stains. This map is a whole sheet, which is unlike the three copies found on Worldcat/OCLC, which are instead cut into sections and backed in linen for storage in the slipcase. The map contains 139 numbered unnamed stops, to which according to the teetotum a player would advance, name the numbered city, state the population of the city or be penalized. Not present is the teetotum (a spinning top marked with numbers), game tokens called "traveller's" tokens, the letterpress text sheet, and the slipcase. This is a rare map, and shows two numbered stops in Michigan Territory, the North West Territory and Arkansas Territory but there is no number for Chicago! Map only.. First Edition. Unbound. Good+ condition. Folio.
