        ACCOUNT OF AN EXPEDITION FROM PITTSBURGH TO THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS, PERFORMED IN THE YEARS 1819, AND '20 &UNDER THE COMMAND OF MAJOR STEPHEN H. LONG

      Philadelphia: H.C. Carey & Lea, 1822-1823.. [4],5,[2],503; [5],442,xcviii pp. plus eight plates (one colored). Atlas: 4pp., plus two double-page maps, one double-page plate of geological cross- sections, and eight plates (one hand-coloured). Two octavo text volumes plus quarto atlas volume. Modern calf, gilt with leather label. Some light dampstaining and scattered foxing. Atlas in contemporary boards, printed paper label; rebacked in matching modern calf. Boards lightly soiled, corners repaired. Minor soiling and foxing, but atlas plates clean. Very good. First edition of a cornerstone work of Western Americana and American cartography, complete with the rare atlas. Originally named the "Yellowstone Expedition," the U.S. government expedition under Major Stephen Long was the most ambitious exploration of the trans- Mississippi West following those of Lewis and Clark and Zebulon Pike. The expedition travelled up the Missouri and then followed the River Platte to its source in the Rocky Mountains before moving south to Upper Arkansas. From there the plan was to find the source of the Red River, but when this was missed, the Canadian River was explored instead. Edwin James was the botanist, geologist, and surgeon for the expedition and "based his compilation upon his own records, the brief geological notes of Major Long, and the early journals of Thomas Say [who served as the expedition's zoologist]" (Wagner-Camp). Significantly, Long's expedition was the first official U.S. expedition to be accompanied by artists (namely Titian Peale and Samuel Seymour), and the illustrations in the atlas are therefore an important early visual record of the area. The plates depict Oto Indians, views of the Plains, buffalo, etc. Cartographically, the atlas contains the first maps to provide detail of the Central Plains. Upon returning to Washington from the expedition, Long drafted a large manuscript map of the West (now in the National Archives), and the printed maps in James' ACCOUNT closely follows. The "Western Section" map is particularly interesting, as it is here that the myth of the Great American Desert was founded by Long: a myth which endured for decades. The designation of Great American Desert appears east of the single range of the Rocky Mountains, together with a two-line note: "The Great American Desert is frequented by roving bands of Indians who have no fixed places of residence but roam from place to place in quest of game." Long's map, along with that of Lewis and Clark, "were the progenitors of an entire class of maps of the American Transmississippi West" (Wheat). James' ACCOUNT deservedly ranks alongside the narratives of Lewis and Clark and Pike as the most important early exploratory narratives of the American West. BRADFORD 2637. GRAFF 2188.         [MANUSCRIPT DESCRIPTION OF THE CITY OF MANZANILLO, CUBA, DESCRIBING THE CITY'S HISTORY, POLITICS, AND TOPOGRAPHY]

      [Manzanillo. ca. 1822].. 98pp. In Spanish. Folio. Loose sheets; old stab holes in left margin. Some light soiling and wear, some ink bleed. Very good. Significant manuscript relating to the history, politics, and economic development of the port city of Manzanillo, located in the Granma Province of eastern Cuba, on the Gulf of Guacanayabo, near the delta of the Cauto River. The document seems aimed at achieving greater municipal autonomy and authority. Mention is made of upgrading the port, building sugar refineries, improving defense, the town's natural resources and geography, and the further development of agriculture and commerce in the area. The city's proximity to Santiago and the island of Jamaica are noted and described as an advantage for further developing the town, which at that time had twelve streets, 388 houses, and a population of about 2,700 people. There is a copy of the census made by Miguel Fernandez, dated December 2, 1819, which is broken down according to race, and whether the people in question were slaves or freemen. The document also relates a tale of six enemy insurgent ships landing and attacking the townspeople, who successfully repelled them, on October 7, 1819. It is asserted that these invaders are English - possibly some of the many English filibusterers, unemployed at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, who sailed for South America to participate in the revolutions underway there at this time. The document closes with the signature of Jose Imblurgueta, Secretary, and a note dated March 5, 1822. An interesting and insightful document.

        The History of Modern Europe. In seven volumes

      sp;- London - F. C. and J. Rivington et al, 1822 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A lovely set of the scarce 1822 London edition of Russell'sunusual historical work, writtenin epistolary form. A new edition, with a continuation, terminating at the establishment of the Austrian power in Italy, in 1821. 'With an account of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire; and a view of the progress of society, from the rise of the modern Kingdoms to the peace of Paris in 1763; in a series of letters from a nobleman to his son'. The epistolary form was chosen 'for uniting the accuracy of the chronologer with the entertrainment of the memorialist: and the character of a nobleman and a father was assumed, in order to give greater weight to the moral and political maxims, and to entitle the writer to offer, without seeming to dictate to the world, such reflections on life and manners, as are supposed more immediately to belong to the higher orders of society'. Complete in seven volumes. William Russell, (17461793). Russell achieved his chief reputation as a historian. The first of his works to meet with any success was The History of America, from the First Discovery by Columbus to the Conclusion of the Late War, which was completed in 1779. In the same year he issued, anonymously, the first two volumes of his History of Modern Europe, in a Series of Letters from a Nobleman to his Son. Three further volumes, with the author's name, appeared in 1784, and the whole work was published in five volumes in 1786. His History of Ancient Europe, with a View of the Revolutions in Asia and Africa (1793) was a fragment, and had indifferent success. DNBCondition: In decorative full calf bindings. Externally generally sound althougha trifle rubbed, two joints just starting, backstrip of volume VII coming away slightly at the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean, just a few scattered spots, heavier spotting to first and last few pages of each volume including titles. Ink signatures to front blanks. Overall: VERY GOOD.

        Travels in Nubia;

      London: John Murray,, 1822. by the Late … Published by the Association for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior Parts of Africa. Quarto (268 × 211 mm) Contemporary half calf on marbled boards,tan morocco label, flat bands, gilt milled, edges sprinkled blue, dark blue silk page-marker present and intact. Etched portrait frontispiece by Angelica Clarke after Slater, 3 engraved maps, one full-page and 2 folding. Slightly rubbed, mild damping at the tail of the spine, front inner hinge cracked to the cords but tight, quadrant of damp-staining at the lower inner margins, text barely affected but the plates showing a slight tidemark, images barely touched, light browning to the text, a very good copy. Second edition, first published in 1819. Burckhardt's travels were made under the aegis of the Association for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior Parts of Africa. He arrived in London in 1806, and after failing to obtain a diplomatic posting he approached Sir Joseph Banks, one of the chief supporters of the Association, with a letter of introduction from the natural historian Joseph Friedrich Blumenbach, under whom he had studied at Göttingen. He proposed, and was soon accepted to undertake exploration on their behalf, "particularly the search for the course of the Niger" (ODNB). Most of his journeys were made in the guise of Ibrahim ibn Abdallah, an Indian merchant and pilgrim to the holy places, under which name he was to be buried in the Muslim cemetery at Cairo in 1817. "Burckhardt possessed the best qualifications for a traveller. He prepared meticulously for his voyages, obeying his maxim 'Eile mit Weile' - 'more haste less speed' - even when this made it seem to contemporaries that he was slow and hesitant. Daring and yet prudent, a close and accurate observer with an intimate knowledge of the manners and language of the people among whom he travelled, he was able to accomplish feats of exploration which to others would have been impossible …" This part of his explorations were made "in 1813 and 1814. Burckhardt left Aleppo in 1812 and made his way to Cairo; he then carried out two journeys: one along the upper Nile and the other through the Nubian desert. These travels were edited from Burckhardt's journals by Leake; he also wrote the biographical memoir which is prefaced to the travels. This was the first of Burckhardt's works to be published … " (Blackmer). Armorial bookplate of William Ramsay, professor of Humanity (Latin) at the University of Glasgow 1831-63, one of the foremost British classical scholars of the era.

        Journal of a Voyage to Greenland, in the year 1821. With graphic illustrations

      London: printed for G. and W.B. Whittaker, 1822. Quarto. (11 x 8 3/4 inches). One folding hand-coloured lithographic map, 20 uncoloured lithographic plates (1 folding), numerous wood-engraved illustrations. Expertly bound to style in half dark blue straight grain morocco over contemporary marbled paper covered boards, flat spine in six compartments, lettered in the second compartment, repeat decoration in gilt in the others. First edition of this increasingly rare classic of both Polar and whaling literature. This work is a lively and well-written account of a whaling expedition which the author undertook with William Scoresby, Jr. (1789-1857) on the Greenland ship the Baffin in the summer of 1821. The author's stated primary aim was to test his newly-invented harpoon guns. The Baffin sailed first to Spitzbergen, then along the east coast of Greenland, to Iceland and then home. The work contains a lithographed map of the polar region from Baffin's Bay to Nova Zembla with Iceland in the center and some very fine lithographed whaling scenes by James Duffield Harding (1797-1863) printed by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850). These images in addition to being an important record of whaling at the start of the 19th century are also early examples of lithography in England. A second edition of Manby's journal was published in 1823. The 1822 first edition has become increasingly scarce, with only the Frank Streeter and Barbara Johnson copies appearing at auction in the last two decades.         Description of the Abbeys of Melrose, and Old Melrose, with Their Traditions [Fantastic Sir Walter Scott and Thomas Moore Association Copy]

      Printed for the Author by J. Orphoot, Edinburgh - 1822, 2nd Improved Edition. () Very good. [i-iii],iv,[5],6-125pp. Octavo. Finely bound in polished green calf. Heavily gilt and blind panel design stamped to front and rear boards with gilt fleurons. Spine in 5 compartments, one compartment with title and remaining 4 stamped in gilt. Raised bands. Gilt dentelles to edges and insides of front and back boards. Some rubbing to spine and shelf wear to board edges. Corners slightly bumped. A.e.g. Internally clean with only occasional age toning . Folding frontis of Melrose Abbey. With the engraved bookplate of Sir Thomas Moore and the red morocco variant bookplate of Harold Murdock. **A fantastic association copy.** This copy not only belonged to the book's dedicatee, Sir Walter Scott, but it was presented by Scott in his hand to his contemporary and public "rival" Thomas Moore: "Thomas Moore from his affectionate friend, Walter Scott, Melrose Abbey, 31 October 1825" with Moore's signature. At the time of this inscription, Moore and Scott were both working on books, Scott his monumental 9 volume work on Napoleon and Moore his thin volume, Epicurean. By chance, both books were scheduled to be released on the same day in 1827. Worried that Epicurean would be lost in the publicity of Scott's Napoleon (which Moore had criticized), Moore published his book one day before Scott's (British Museum Satires 15440). This public "feud" was immortalized in an engraved cartoon, offered with this book, presenting both Moore and Scott, with their respective works, balanced on the scale of public opinion. Moore triumphantly displays the thin Epicurean to Scott, who although weighed down by his 9 volumes of Napoleon, has been bested by Moore in the "Balance of Public Favor". The book offered here was signed and presented to Moore by Scott at an important time in the relationship between the two authors, interestingly, at Melrose Abbey, the subject of this book and subject of Scott's poem, "The Lay of the Last Minstrel, Canto Second.". Signed by Sir Walter Scott and Thomas Moore. Fantastic Association Between Thomas Moore and Sir Walter Scott [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Gold Regions of South Eastern Africa

      Â Thomas Baines (1822 –1875) was an English artist and explorer of British colonial southern Africa and Australia.  Today, Baines is best known for his detailed paintings and sketches which give a unique insight into colonial life in southern Africa and Australia. Many of his pictures are held by the National Library of Australia, National Archives of Zimbabwe, National Maritime Museum, Brenthurst Library and the Royal Geographical Society.  In 1870 Baines was granted a concession to explore for gold between the Gweru and Hunyani rivers by Lobengula, leader of the Matabele nation.  "Mr. Baines was one of the earliest pioneers in that part of Africa now known as Rhodesia [now Zimbabwe]. Unfortunately his backers in Europe failed to procure the necessary working capital for the exploitation of the venture, so the author missed making a large fortune.  The volume is a most important work, and contains full information of every description upon the subject of the gold discoveries in Matabeleland and Mashonaland, with much curious knowledge of the inhabitants.  The book also contains an account of the gold discoveries in the Transvaal [and] gives details of no less than nineteen routes from the various places in South Africa to the newly discovered goldfields. " (See Mendelsshon, Volume I, p.71).  This work was published posthumously.  This volume is very good in the original green pictorial cloth, featuring gilt illustrations on the spine and front cover. It contains a two-page folding facsimile letter from Livingstone to Baines, 4 mounted photographic plates, including one of the author and the balance of Baines' paintings, other wood-engraved illustrations in the text, and a folding map in the rear cover pocket.  All illustrations, the facsimile letter, and the map are intact and in excellent condition.  Also included are a biographical sketch of the author, detailed Tables of Distances and Routes, and 51 pages of advertisements bound in at the rear.  The contents are clean and bright with no spotting, as are the text block edges.  There is a split at the title page, but the binding cords are holding solidly.  There is an inked previous owner's note on the title page and the front pastedown bears a pasted image of a memorial tablet for Thomas Baines, below which is inked the words "The above Tablet was placed in the parish Church, Durham Hotel."  The green cloth covers and decorative gilt are bright and unfaded with excellent spine presentation.  There is some mottling at the front cover fore edge and light wear to the corners and spine ends.

        Dizionario universale ragionato della giurisprudenza mercantile del Sig. Senatore D. D. A. Azuni primo giudice legale del supremo magistrato del Consolato e del mare sedente in Cagliari... Tomo I (-IV)

      Dai torchi di G. Masi 1822-23 4 voll. leg. in 2, in 4°, pp. XXX + 366; 292; 296; 210 + 110 con 1 ritr. inc. all'acquaf. posto al 2° vol. M. pl. coeva con tasselli e fr. oro al d. Piccole mancanze al d. del 2° vol. e alcuni segni d'uso ai piatti e ai tagli. Seconda edizione, dopo quella 1786-88, di quest'opera di diritto mercantile e marittimo di grande fortuna, realizzata sulle basi dell'esperienza acquisita in particolare nel ruolo di giudice del tribunale del commercio marittimo di Nizza. Durante il periodo napoleonico, Azuni ebbe l'incarico di partecipare alla stesura del codice marittimo e commerciale francese. Dopo la restaurazione, caduto in sfortuna, si ritirò a Genova e poi a Cagliari. Quest'opera, che per certi versi richiama il Dictionnaire universel de commerce del Savary, risulta a causa di una concezione troppo enciclopedica e omnicomprensiva densa di una eccessiva mole di notizie a scapito dell'approfondimento giuridico. Mansutti, 104 (solo i primi 2 tomi). ITA

      Veduta incisa all?aquaforte su lastra di rame, inserite nella monumentale opera Description de l?Egypte, II° edizione dal 1820-29 voluta da Luigi XVIII, importante risultato culturale dell?occupazione francese in Egitto per il periodo che va dal 1798 al 1801. Bonaparte decise di invadere queste terre per controllare le vie commerciali verso l?india ed assestare in questo modo un duro colpo all?economia britannica. Durante questa operazione, il Nostro favorì l?attività di numerosi artisti, ingegneri, matematici e naturalisti per registrare e catalogare con estrema precisione le costruzioni e i monumenti egiziani nonché la flora e la fauna.         Traité de mineralogie. Seconde édition, revue, corrigée, et considérablement augmentée par l'auteur.

      Paris, Bachelier, 1822-1823. 4 text volumes & atlas. Royal-8vo & Oblong-4to (atlas). pp. xlviii, 594; 613; 592; 604, (6); (2), 54, with 120 engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, spines with richly gilt ornaments and lettering (a few hinges a bit weak). A fine copy of the second edition. The atlas has been enlarged by 14 plates. The first edition was published in 1801. Abbé René Just Haüy (1743-1821) is the founder of mathematical crystallography and raised mineralogy to the rank of a science. 'This is the man who truly founded and developed the science of crystallography and as Adams says, was a simple, modest, a lover of learning, whose attention was directed to the study of mineralogy almost by chance. In handling a group of calcite crystals at the home of a friend, Haüy accidentally dropped them. When he reexamined the broken prism he noticed a new form, bounded by faces as smooth and shining as the original. A new light broke upon the subject' (Hoover 391). Hoover 391 (1 edition); Wilson, Mineral Books p. 58.

Eugène Scribe". Etat très satisfaisant (accroc à 2 ff. sans mq., rel. frottée en dos et coins, bon état par ailleurs). Français

        Observations Minéralogiques sur les environs de Vienne.

      Vienne, Leopold Grund, 1822. 4to. pp. iv, 58, (2), with 10 handcoloured plates. Contemporary printed boards (spine rebacked). This beautifully produced monograph deals to a large extend with fossils found in the surroundings of the Austrian capital Vienna. However mineralogical matters are also discussed widely. The attractive plates, some engraved and others lithographed show fossils and minerals. "Count Razumovsky (1759-1837) was a Russian nobleman and geologist. He built a collection of about 6,000 Russian mineral specimens, and also others from Germany and Switzerland, 'at great expense and over many years'. He later lived in Paris and Lausanne, and sold his collection to Georg Gibbs ca. 1800" (Wilson. The History of Mineral Collecting, p. 189). B.M.(Nat. Hist.)IV, 1657.
