18, n°1, p. 98-122. (Einaudi, 5129. Goldsmiths, 23443. Kress, C.967). Très bon exemplaire, très bien relié.         The History of England; from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688...[and] from the Revolution in 1688 to the Death of George II.

London: J.F. Dove, 1822. Octavo, 13 volumes. Bound in contemporary red straight grain morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, all edges gilt. Illustrated with numerous steel-engraved portrait plates throughout. An attractive and profusely illustrated set, of which the first eight volumes are by Hume, with Smollett contributing the final five. The History of England is David Hume's great work on the history of England, which he wrote in installments while he was librarian to the Faculty of Advocates in Edinburgh. It was published in six volumes in 1754, 1756, 1759, and 1761. The first publication of his History was greeted with outrage by all political factions, but it became a best-seller, finally giving him the financial independence he had long sought. Both the British Library and the Cambridge University Library, as well as Hume's own library, still list him as "David Hume, the historian." Hume's History spanned "from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688" and went through over 100 editions. Many considered it the standard history of England in its day.

Edition Originale. Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica.

Glasgow: Andreae et Joannis M. Duncan. 1822. 4to. 4 vols bound in 2. Contemporary full brown calf, boards with gilt double fillet panels and acanthus and shell-motif blind rolls to borders, spines with gilt panels and red morocco gilt lettering pieces, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled; [4] + [vii]-xxx+ [2] + 431 + [1], [6] + 320, [4] + xxxvi + 344, [2] + vi + 202 + [2]; spines slightly sunned, occasional mild offsetting and foxing, one leaf with lower outer corner torn, otherwise very good in a handsome binding. Provenance: both volumes with inscription of James Gallichan, St John's College, Cambridge, to front flyleaf. Gallichan became the Chaplain of the Gaol, Poor House and Hospital in Jersey and died in 1859. First Glasgow printing of the 1739 Geneva "Jesuit" edition, so-called despite the non-participation of Jesuits; the two editors were Minim monks. This was a hugely influential reprint of the third edition of 1726, with commentary by the editors and Jean-Louis Calandrini, professor of mathematics and philosophy at the University of Geneva. This edition of the Principia became the most extensively used because of the brilliance of the notes, which are almost the same length as Newton's text and employ Leibnizian calculus, and ran through two more printings in 1760 and 1822. Brunet describes the Glasgow printing as particularly "belle et soignee, avec les figures inserees dans le texte". Babson 32; Brunet IV, 49.

A Grammar of the High Dialect of the Tamil Language, termed Shen-Tamil: to which is Added an Introduction to Tamil Poetry. Translated from the original Latin, by Benjamin Guy Babington. Madras, The College Press, 1822.

1822 1822 - 4to. Pp. (ii), xii, 117 + 5 content. Wide margins. Contemporary calf, blindstamped border on the covers, spine gilt with red title label, rubbed. Library markings on front endpapers. Some leaves with small marginal wormholes (no text loss). Occasionally some light staining. Rare first printed edition, translated into English from the original Latin completed in manuscript form about 100 years earlier but not printed at that time. Beschi was born in Italy in 1680 but spent most of his life as a missionary in India. He was the founder of the Madura mission and became one of the earliest and most distinguished pioneers in the field of Tamil studies. He composed several linguistic works but is perhaps best known as a Tamil poet. He produced a grammar of Low Tamil (the common dialect) in Latin which was printed at Tranquebar in 1728. The present grammar of Shen-Tamil (the high dialect) was composed the following year but for an unknown reason never printed. This English version was based on a collation of texts, transcriptions and copies. It remains a pioneering study of an ancient and complex language by a sensitive and meticulous scholar and a talented translator. The translator Benjamin Guy Babington was an English physician and Oriental scholar who spent about ten years in India. Vater p. 240. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Medicinalium observationum exempla rara. Accessere & alia quaedam, quorum elenchum pagina post praefationem exhibet.Leiden, Christoffel Plantin, 1585. Small 8vo (16 x 10 cm). With Plantin's woodcut compasses device on the title-page. Contemporary reversed parchment (made from the lower part of a leaf from a 16th-century legal document in German, with a reference to Basel).

BMN I, p. 184; Durling 1180; Voet 1094; USTC 422345; cf. Wellcome 1822. Second edition, adding a chapter with an additional case study, and only Plantin edition of an important collection of medical case studies and other medical observations by the great botanist Rembert Dodoens. Dodoens took many from his own medical practice and also edited and annotated examples by his predecessors: Taranta (d. 1418), Benivieni (published 1507) and Cornax (1507-1564). He also added his own hierarchical overview of physiology following Galenus. While several highly regarded scholars published collections of this sort, they are aimed largely at the general public and tend to present bizarre cases that hold the reader's attention. By writing in Latin Dodoens brought his book to an international educated public. Such works also try to demonstrate the value of classical Galenic medical theories, while using new observations to correct and expand them in areas where they had proved weak. This helped defend the status of the medical academic in a world where many healers practiced without academic training, whether experienced herbalists or outright charlatans. With contemporary owner's inscriptions. A few quires slightly browned, but the book is still in very good condition. The binding shows a few stains and most of the ties are lost, but it is still good.

[MANUSCRIPT] A List of 18 Male Convicts (Boys) discharged from the Bellerophon Hulk at Sheerness for New South Wales by the Ship Lady East this 21st October 1824.

[Drop title]. Folio, [4] pp, manuscript in ink on laid paper watermarked Charles Wise 1822 with Britannia surmounted by crown; signed at the foot of the third page by the Bellerophon's Commander, Samuel Owen; the list of prisoner profiles, set out in tabular form, contains Commander Owen's remarks on the conduct and demeanour of each of the boys, whose ages range from 16 to 18; the fourth page is endorsed 'Bellerophon'; contrary to the report's title, these boys were transported on the Lady East not to New South Wales but to Van Diemen's Land, arriving at Hobart Town on 9 April 1825; original folds, mild foxing, otherwise clean and legible. HMS Bellerophon, a famous ship which had played a conspicuous part in both the Battle of the Nile and the Battle of the Trafalgar, was used as a prison hulk for boys between 1823 and 1825. It was moored off Sheerness, a town located at the mouth of the River Medway in Kent. The Bellerophon accomodated around 60 boys between the ages of 9 and 18. As her layout meant there was no space for workshops, it was decided at the end of 1825 to transfer the boys to the Euryalus, a hulk which had been specially fitted for such a purpose. For each of the 18 boys listed in this report, Commander Samuel Owen supplies name, age, offence, place of conviction, occupation, remarks about conduct while under his supervision, and a gaoler's report on previous behaviour. It is at the same time a fascinating and depressing document, a starkly human eyewitness record of life on a prison hulk that is also an indictment of the British penal and class systems. Reading it, we keenly feel the plight of these young men helplessly caught in the cycle of poverty and crime: John Bird (18); Thomas Gibson (17); Charles Goulding (18); Robert Bainbridge (17); Charles Lewis (16); Goodman Solomon (17); William Tobin (17); William Martin (17); William Bumbie (16); Ephraim Digby (18); Archibald Bensurilla (17); John Oram (17); John Foster (16); Edward Wise (17); Robert Grout (16); James Walker (16); Francis Hemming (17), and Edward Burton (16). The following prisoner profiles, including extracts from Commander Owen's remarks, are illustrative of the revealing and detailed content in this document: Charles Goulding, a cooper and shoemaker, was sentenced to 14 years for stealing a handkerchief; "Double ironed for very improper conduct, and flogged for breaking his irons". Charles Lewis, a tailor, was sentenced to 7 years for stealing; "This lad has been very attentive to his Trade in this Ship. But in other respects he is an exceeding badly disposed lad. He has been in confinement 7 times before". Goodman Solomon, a tailor, was sentenced to 7 years for stealing a brass crimping machine; "Gaoler's report: In custody before, a bad lad. This lad is a Jew. His general conduct in this Ship has been good, and has been attentive to his Trade". William Tobin, a shoemaker, was sentenced to 7 years for stealing sundry articles of apparel; "The general behaviour of this lad has been very indifferent in this Ship. He is idle & slothful, and has made no progress at his Trade". John Foster, a shoemaker, was sentenced to 7 years for stealing 150 yards of jean; "General behaviour at this Ship very bad. Has been flogged twice, once for prophane Swearing, and once for stealing blankets".

[Manuscript] Specimens of Miscellaneous Poetry with several Original Pieces.

London: , 1822. Octavo (175 x 105 mm). Contemporary calf, spine gilt- and blind-tooled in compartments with black title label, boards richly panelled in gilt and blind, endpapers coated green, all edges gilt. Very slight rubbing, a few trivial spots without, but a beautiful book in excellent contemporary condition. A lovely manuscript anthology of Romantic poetry, executed in 1822 and giving a valuable record of contemporary taste, with numerous poems by Lord Byron ("To Thirza", "The Destruction of Sennacherib", "Fare thee Well!", and "She walk in beauty...", to name but few), as well as others by Walter Scott, Robert Southey, Erasmus Darwin, Samuel Rogers, etc. These appear alongside many "Anonymous" poems, the vast majority of which appear to have been drawn from contemporary editions of Blackwoods Edinburgh Magazine - so many so that we must surmise the selection was made by an avid subscriber.
