Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Ihr Verehrer und alter Freund Göckingk").

Salzbrunn, 27. Juli 1822.. 4 SS. 8vo. Dicht beschrieben.. An Henriette Kohlrausch.

London: printed for F. C. & J. Rivington,, 1822. or, Rules for the Gentlemen of England. Octavo (180 × 105 mm). Bound by S. Corey of Ballyclare in contemporary half calf, spine gilt in compartments with title direct, marbled sides and edges. With the half title and vignette-engraved title page. Contemporary ownership inscription of John Owens, Worcester College, Oxford, to title page. Spine, sides and corners rubbed, front joint and the head of rear joint starting, very slight spotting to a few end leaves, a very good copy. First edition of the rare original production of this chivalric primer by antiquarian writer Kenelm Henry Digby (1797-1880), which would find broad popularity expanded into four separately published parts Morus (1826), Tancredus (1828), Orlandus (1829) and Godefridus (1829), and again collectively republished in the 1840s and 1870s. Though now almost unknown, Digby's Broad Stone of Honour is interesting both as an evocation of an eccentric personal fascination (Digby took his title from his favourite castle, Ehrenbreistein) recalcitrantly at odds with the utilitarian industrial age in which it was composed, and in its significant contemporary influence on ideas of honour and gentlemanly conduct. It was partially through Digby's enthusiastic attempt to revive, from out of medieval romances such as Malory's Morte D'Arthure (recently in 1816 reprinted for the first time since 1634) and others more obscure, the spirit of chivalry (in particular the evaluation of the honour over intellect, and the disdain for making money) that the Victorian concept of a proper gentleman was formed. Digby's preface gives a fair flavour of the text: "Wherefore I have enterprized, under the favour and correction of all noble gentlemen and gentlewomen, to frame and imprint a book of ensamples and doctrines, which I call The Broad Stone of Honour; seeing that it will be a fortress, like that rock upon the Rhine, where coward or traitor never stood, which bears this proud title, and is impregnable; where all may stand who love honour, and true nobility may look down upon their enemies, who are vainly plotting in the plain below; where they may enjoy a purity of feeling, which, like "the liberal air," that surrounds that lofty summit, is free from the infection of a base world." The origins of the Boy Scout movement have also been traced back to Digby's Broad Stone of Honour. Though reasonably well represented institutionally (OCLC listing 18 copies worldwide), this true first edition is rare in commerce, with only two copies ever recorded at auction, the last in 1951.

        Reed Warbler

London: J.H. Bohte, 1822. Handcoloured engraving, 289 x210mm, framed. The Reed Warbler is an interesting bird, found down Eastern Australia to Victoria and Tasmania, but coming and going mysteriously in the southern parts of its habitat. Besides being a migrant, the Reed Warbler, as its name indicates, is a merry and cheerful songster, not only by day but by night, its song being quite canary-like. The bird's habitat is the sedgy sides of rivers and reeds and rushes of swamps, you cannot always see the birds in such secluded areas, but their presence or arrival can always be ascertained by hearing their loud merry warbles.John Lewin was Australia's first professional artist, he arrived in the colony in 1800 and established himself as the first natural history artist. He is best remembered through the superb books he published on Australian ornithology and entomology. As the catalogue of the Wettenhall Library pointed out, "The bibliographical and historical importance of Lewin has been emphasised in recent years, but Lewin the naturalist has been somewhat neglected. Although his illustrations are in the style of the eighteenth century and predate the draughtsmanship, finesse and varied palette developed by the great nineteenth-century illustrators such as Lear, Wolf and Keulemans, they are highly competent and show the mind of an excellent observer. Lewin's birds are correct; the feather detail, legs, particularly the positioning of the toes, posture of the bird, the understanding of male and female plumage, the interactions between male and female (in four plates the male is singing and displaying to the female) are accurate and show a keen observer at work. The other important detail in Lewin's illustrations are the plants: they demonstrate an observer who is familiar with his subject's habitat and life-history."After Lewin's death in 1819, his widow Anna returned to England, where she set about producing a new edition of her husband's beautiful book, adding an extra eight plates for the new edition, this plate being plate XVIII from Lewin's A Natural History of the Birds of New South Wales published in 1822.

[AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT, SIGNED WITH INITIALS, IN WHICH JOHN TRUMBULL AGREES TO USE HIS PAINTING OF THE Declaration of Independence AS COLLATERAL FOR A LOAN]

[New York]. March 10, 1822.. [1]p. Docketed on verso. Quarto sheet. Old fold lines. Bottom third separated at fold. Minor wear. Good plus. A remarkable document written by American artist John Trumbull, utilizing his original painting of "The Declaration of Independence" as collateral to secure a loan from the Bank of New York. This document, addressed to Charles Wilkes as the cashier of the Bank of New York, reads in part: "Now therefore, being desirous to Secure him as far as is in my power against loss by the uncertainty of Life & prosperity, I do hereby hypothecate & pledge to him the sd. Charles Wilkes the Senate painting of the declaration of Independence now in the hands of Mr. [Asher Brown] Durand the Engraver and also the Copper plate which He is engraving from the Same as collateral Security for any Sum which he may hazard by any accident befalling me. And this pledge shall remain in full force until all and every Note or Notes which He may have endorsed for me shall be paid & Cancelled." Trumbull is referring to his original painting of this famous event, which was begun in Paris at the suggestion of Thomas Jefferson. Trumbull was later commissioned by the Congress to paint a 12 by 18-foot version based on this original. This larger painting was sold to Congress in 1819, so it is almost certainly the original smaller version that remained in his possession (now at Yale University Art Gallery) that was being used as collateral for a loan. Hailed as the official painter of the Revolution, Trumbull studied painting and art in England and France. The youngest son of the governor of Connecticut, the elder John Trumbull very much wanted his son to go into law. Trumbull did study the law, but gladly joined the fight against the British when the Revolution broke out. He eventually served as Washington's second aide-de-camp, having been brought to the General's attention through some very accurate drawings he had made of British gun emplacements. He rose to the rank of colonel as a deputy adjutant-general, but resigned the commission he finally received because it was dated three months late, a slight his honor could not tolerate. He refused to return to the law, finding it distasteful, and chose instead to pursue his true passion, art, against his family's wishes. Though he was never wealthy in this pursuit, he did achieve a certain amount of success in his own lifetime. Among his most famous works are those commissioned in 1817 by Congress to adorn the Capitol building: "The Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga," "The Surrender of General Cornwallis at Yorktown," "The Declaration of Independence," and "The Resignation of General Washington." Charles Wilkes (1764-1833) was promoted to president of the Bank of New York in 1825, a position he held until his retirement in 1832. Engraver Asher B. Durand (1796- 1886) made his name with his 1823 engraving of Trumbull's Declaration. He turned to painting in the 1830s and helped to found the Hudson River School movement. The original "Declaration of Independence," redeemed from loan, was later part of of Trumbull's founding gift to the Yale University Art Gallery.

[Scrapbook]: A Collection of Newspaper Clippings & Hand-Colored Wood and Steel engravings (circa 1822-1830)

[Massachusetts]. (1822-1830). Folio scrapbook. 166pp. Contemporary dark red half morocco, marbled papercovered boards. Front board is detached, spine a little loose and a few detached leaves, else very good. A neatly assembled scrapbook collection of newspaper articles, poems, songs, and miscellaneous extracts on various topics relating to fashion, morals, and current events, spanning the years 1822-1830. All neatly tipped-in on the versos and rectos of 83 unnumbered leaves in three columns; with a variety of custom cut and painted divisional borders, and numerous hand-colored wood and steel engraved vignettes of various sizes tipped-in between the clippings. The album also contains embossed color and gilt vignettes, half-page and full-page portrait and landscape wood and steel engravings, and one early American satirical lithograph by W.I. Stone. Most of the clippings are from local newspapers published in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. Two large wood-engravings (of the Berkshire Medical Institution in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on the front pastedown, and the Town of Sherburne, Nantucket on the rear pastedown) indicate the album's geographical focus in Massachusetts. Most clippings reflect the morality, humor, and wit of an educated New England lady with decidedly liberal leanings and a special interest in Lord Byron and steamboats. The tipped-in vignettes and engravings are especially fine and varied in subject manner, the cutting and hand-coloring is accomplished, and the entire album was clearly made with considerable care, thus preserving a graphically vivid picture of the period. .
