      - Paris, Audot, 1821. 3 volumes bound in one (305 x 235mm). 4to. pp. (4), 95, (1); (4), 176, (2); (4), with 90 beautifully hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary half green calf, richly gilt decorated spines with gilt lettering. A beautifully bound and large copy of the scarce first edition, which was followed by a much smaller edition in 8vo in 1833-1839. "Louis Noisette was the son of a gardener and followed the same occupation in 1795, after his military service, when he took charge of the gardens and greenhouses of the Val de Grâce hospital in Paris. Three years later he was renting land for his own nursery garden in Faubourg Saint-Jaques. Once his garden was established he travelled to Hungary with Prince Esterhazy, furnishing the Prince's new plantations there. As Noisette's reputation and his nursery's stock both grew, he started a larger garden for trees and fruit at Fontenay-les-Roses, before moving to Montrouge in 1836. The Noisette nursery is credited with the introduction to France of many new North American plants, a speciality that must have been helped by Louis's brother Philippe, who was for some years a nurserymen in Charleston, South Carolina. The original Noisette rose, first raised in Charleston, was one of these introductions, in 1814, and the 'Fraisier de Caroline' in the 'Jardin fruitier' is another reminder of the association." (S. Raphael. An Oak Spring Pomona, p. 114 & 117). There are mostly several fruits on each plate.Nissen BBI, 1450; Dunthorne. Flower and Fruit Prints, 217. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Untersuchungen über die Formen der leblosen Natur. Erster Band (alles Erschienene).

Göttingen Vandenhoeck und Ruprecht 1821 - (25 x 21 cm). VIII, 677 S. Mit 16 gefalteten Kupfertafeln.

- Stellenweise leicht stockfleckig. - DSB 5, 142; Darmstaedter 342 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph letter signed "Malibran" to "Monsieur [?Carlo] Severini."

Spanish mezzo-soprano Maria Malibran was the daughter of tenor and composer Manuel Garcia the Elder, and sister of the famed singers Pauline Viardot (1821-1910) and Manuel Garcia the Younger (1805-1906). She made her London début at the King';s Theatre in June 1825 as Rosina (Il barbiere), and "her Paris début at the Théâtre Italien in Semiramide in 1828, where she also created the title role in Halévy';s Clari (1828). She reappeared at the King';s Theatre in 1829 in Otello, and then sang alternately in Paris and London until 1832, when she went to Italy... She also created the title role in Donizetti';s Maria Stuarda on 30 December 1835, causing a famous scandal by ignoring some changes that the Milanese censors had insisted upon. Bellini adapted the role of Elvira in I puritani (1835, Paris) for her to sing in Naples, but the opera was turned down by the management and she never sang it. Her first marriage having eventually been annulled, she married the violinist Charles de Bériot [1802-1870] in March 1836, and at Drury Lane in May of that year created the title role in Balfe';s The Maid of Artois, which he had written for her. A riding accident when she was pregnant resulted in her death during the Manchester Festival. To judge from the parts adapted for her by both Donizetti and Bellini, the compass (g to e ), power and flexibility of Malibran';s voice were extraordinary. Her early death turned her into something of a legendary figure with writers and poets during the later 19th century." Elizabeth Forbes in Grove Music Online. The recipient of this letter was most likely Carlo Severini, co-director of the Théâtre Italien in Paris from 1825 until 1838. "[His] tenure was one of the high points in the history of the Théâtre Italien, a period that featured the Parisian premières of works such as Anna Bolena and La sonnambula, the world première of I puritani and regular appearances by such great singers as Grisi, Rubini, Tamburini and Lablache. In [1838] Severini met a premature death in a fire at the theatre, apparently in an attempt to save administrative papers." Steven Huebner in Grove Music Online. Louis Véron (1798-1867) was director of the Paris Opéra from 1831-1835. "He was the first director to be permitted to operate the institution as a private enterprise, albeit with a large state subsidy and surveillance by a government commission. With the financial backing of the Spanish banker Alexandre Aguado and new business strategies that included increasing the number of long-term subscribers, Véron amassed a considerable fortune during his four-year directorship. He steered the Opéra to a position of renewed prominence in Parisian society by creating a meeting ground for the aristocracy and upper castes of the bourgeoisie." Steven Huebner in Grove Music Online. Carlo Zucchelli (1793-1879) was a noted Italian bass. Between 1823 and 1835 he "divided his time between the King's Theatre in London and the Théâtre Italien in Paris. Thereafter he sang at Bologna, Rome, Livorno and elsewhere in Italy, finally retiring from the stage in 1842." Grove Music Online. This letter was most likely written between 1829 and 1832, during which time Malibran sang frequently in Paris, and at the Théâtre Italien in particular. The watermark, dated 1828, serves as a terminus post quem, and Severini's death, in 1838, as a terminus ante quem. Considering the initial acquaintance of Bériot and Malibran, which did not take place until 1829, and Malibran's departure for Italy in 1832, however, this letter was more likely written between these dates. In any case, it is certainly unlikely that Malibran wrote it after 1835, when Louis Véron left the Paris Opéra and Zucchelli returned to Italy.. 2 pp. of a bifolium with integral address panel. Quarto. N.d. [ca. 1829-1832]. In black ink. On stationery with watermark "Gaudin Fils 1828." In French (with translation). Although Malibran is once again confined to bed due to poor health, she will sing in several upcoming performances. "My health is about the same, given that yesterday I got out of bed for the first time and was obliged to return home very quickly. I am once again confined to bed. Nevertheless I expect to keep my word and take a chance Wednesday in the role of Zerlina [in Mozart's Don Giovanni] for our good [Carlo] Zucchelli. Saturday I will play Rosina [in Rossini's La Barbiere di Siviglia] if you do not object to this opera, which is the least tiring of all my roles and which will put me at least risk of a relapse. Please therefore put in all the newspapers that my perfomance will take place Sunday, because if you don't plan to announce it until Wednesday evening there will not be enough time to inform the public about it. Mr. [Charles] de Bériot is kindly taking charge of the letter I have addressed to Mr. [Louis] Véron. You will have the reply as soon as it is written to me." Slightly worn; creased at folds; small edge tears; occasional light smudging, not affecting legibility; lacking portion of central fold and right edge of first leaf, with loss of several words; remnants of wax seal and some offsetting and bleeding to blank third page. Together with: A carte de visite photographic reproduction of a bust-length lithograph of Malibran published by Pierre Petit in Paris. Ca. 102 x 59 mm. Slightly worn, soiled, and foxed; trimmed and laid down to mount.

(Whyld Ravillous 1821:4) 1st edition. Jacob Henry Sarratt was a London schoolmaster who learned his chess from Verdoni and established himself as "Professor of Chess". He was the leading English chess master from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. He was a frequenter of the London Chess Club which met at Tom’s Coffee House in Cornhill. His fee was a guinea a lesson. Under his influence stalemate was accepted as a draw. He was the first great English author on chess. His reputation was high and a revelation to English players. His works were of a pioneering character as to chess and the English language. His first excellent books were A treatise on the Game of Chess Vol 1 and Vol 2 1808. There is a prefix listing books on chess from Damiano onwards and some friendly criticism of Philidor. Vol 1 contains "Different Methods of Opening the Games" then follows 75 Critical Variations. Vol 2 is "Teaching the Player who does not have the move how to frustrate his adversary’s attack". Then there are instructions how to checkmate and a section on endings with pawns only. His next book introduced in translation the works of Damiano, Lopez and Salvio. Published in London in 1813 it deals with those "old" authors extensively. His next book was Vol 1 Gianutio, Vol 2 Selenus with a preface giving some details of the authors. In 1821 was published A New Treatise on the Game of Chess. It is a more exhaustive work than the 1808 publication. He was assisted in this work by his pupil W Lewis. Sarratt died in 1821. His widow then went to Paris and taught chess. In 1844 following an article in Le Palamede, describing her as aged 85 and destitute an appeal was launched which enabled her to live in comfort for the rest of her life".         Singalesisk Skriftlære.

Kolombo (Colombo, Sri Lanka), 1821. 8vo. Original blank blue wrappers. Some brownspotting (due to the paper quality). (2),16 pp.. First (and only) edition of the first Singalese grammar in a Western language, Rask's highly importent work, in which he "identified Sinhalese as a speech belonging to the same class as Sanskrit and added that Tamil belonged to quite a different class. Since then the subject has been studied and discusses by various scholars, and it is established beyond doubt that Sinhalese is an Indo-Aryan language."Rasmus Rask is one of the absolutely most prominent and famous Danish philologers and is very well esteemed worldwide. He was the first to systematically study the ancient Nordic languages and is the discoverer of the relations between the consonants in the Indo-European languages. This discovery served as the foundation of the rules Jacob Grimm later formulated, underlying the Germanic and High-German soundshifts. In PMM, Rask is identified as "one of the founders of the modern science of language." (PMM 266)

The world in miniature; ... Japan, ...London, printed for R. Ackerman, [1825]. 12mo. With 20 hand-coloured engraved plates, including the frontispiece. Contemporary gold-tooled green morocco, gilt edges.

Abbey, Travel 6 (complete series), esp. pp. 12-13; Colas 2730; Pages 486. A charming illustrated book describing Japan, from the 43 volume series 'The world in miniature', published in 1821-1827. Each of these volumes was illustrated with coloured stipple engravings and in the present book they mostly portray the costumes and dress of various professions and classes in Japan. As Japan was an almost completely isolated country until 1853, the book is based on many earlier sources and probably for a large part on an earlier French publication from 1818 published by Nepveu in Paris. Although not all sources consulted were equally reliable, the description in the book are steeped in the empiricism of the 19th century. For instance, after mentioning "amphibious animals, which have a body like a fish, four of five feet long, covered with scales, and a head furnished with hair resembling that of a man", it is concluded that "this account has the air of a fable; but it is probable that some animal unknown to Europeans may have furnished the subject of it".With the bookplate of Kessler Brunner. With offsetting from the plates on the facing pages and the binding slightly rubbed near the edges. Otherwise a very good copy.

Investigation At Ilchester Gaol, In The County Of Somerset.

1821 - Torture, Bribery And Licentious Conduct at Ilchester Gaol Hunt, Henry [1773-1835]. Investigation At Ilchester Gaol, In The County Of Somerset, Into The Conduct Of William Bridle, The Gaoler, Before The Commissioners Appointed By The Crown. The Evidence Given By H.B. Shillibear. Dedicated, With An Address To His Majesty, King George The Fourth. London: Thomas Dolby, 1821. viii, 7, [1], 271, [5], 8 pp. Main text in parallel columns. Etched portrait frontispiece of Bridle, by George Cruikshank, holding the tools of his trade (leg irons, manacles and a hangman's noose), five etched plates, probably by Robert Cruikshank, woodcut text illustration on p. 261. Complete, including the two supplementary addresses found in some copies. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5"). Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards. Moderate rubbing with some wear to spine ends, joints and corners, crack in text block between title page and following leaf. Moderate toning, light foxing in a few places. Later inscription in pencil to front pastedown, interior otherwise clean. * First edition in book form. This was originally issued in six parts, "price one shilling" each, in blue paper printed wrappers. Henry Hunt, the radical politician, had presided over the Smithfield reform meeting on 21 July 1819, and at the meeting in St. Peter's Fields, Manchester, on 16 August, which was broken up by the yeomanry, and became known as the Peterloo Massacre. Hunt was tried at the York Assizes, in March 1 820, for his part in the protest, and was convicted. He spent his two-year term at Ilchester Gaol. The report of the Commission of Inquiry into Ilchester Gaol, instigated because of Hunt's complaints, provides a vivid portrait of the corruption, health hazards and horrifying regimes in place in local prisons in the early years of the nineteenth century. Hunt leveled 21 charges against Bridle, the gaoler. These included gross neglect of duty, drunkenness, gambling, cruelty, torture, bribery, embezzlement, false accounting, "licentious conduct towards female convicts (Bridle was suspected of fathering children with two of them), not feeding inmates properly, and for "making boys sleep with a man convicted of beastiality". It was Hunt himself who examined the witnesses and principals involved. The plates by Robert Cruikshank are mock portraits of: "The Revd. T.G.D. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Zapiski o Nekotorykh Narodakh i Zemliakh Srednei Chasti Azii Filippa Nazarova, Otdel'nogo Sibirskogo Korpusa Perevodchika, Posylannogo v Kokant v 1813 i 1814 Godakh.

St. Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences,, 1821. [Notes on the People and Lands in the Central Part of Asia by Filipp Nazarov, a Translator of the Special Siberian Corps who was sent to Kokand in 1813 and 1814] Octavo (210 × 122 mm) Contemporary maroon quarter sheep, marbled boards. Contemporary book-label of H. J. Melin on the bottom margin of p.17, small ink-stamp to the tail of the last page. A little rubbed, particularly on the joints and corners, some skilful restoration, endpapers browned and with some tan-burn at the corners, text lightly toned, overall a very good copy. First edition. Extremely uncommon, just six copies on OCLC. One of the earliest accounts of Russian relations with the Khanate of Kokand, containing a detailed description of an expedition across Central Asia, into areas very little known at the time; "I publish the result of my observations with the hope of throwing some light on these interesting countries, the birthplace of the tribes which were long the scourge of the Russian Empire" (translation from the London Magazine review of Klaproth's "Magasin Asiatique", April, 1826). The author, Filipp Nazarov, was an interpreter with the Special Siberian Corps of the Russian army, who in 1813, was sent on a special mission to the khanate in order to "repair relations" (Starr, Ferghana Valley: The Heart of Central Asia, p.44) following the death of two members of a Kokandian deputation on their return from a embassy to the court at St. Petersburg in 1812. Accompanied by a 100-camel caravan of Russian merchants seeking to establish trade relations with Kokand, and laden with imperial gifts for the khan, Nazarov departed from Omsk in May 1813. What follows is a finely-observed geographical travelogue encompassing topography and ethnography, largely pragmatic, but inevitably tinged with the Orientalism of its time, and nonetheless revealing for that. His route took him via Petropavlovsk, across the Kazakh-Kirghiz steppe, where he was warned to guard against plunder by the marauding Kirghiz hordes - "slaves to their word, but violent, vindictive, thieves by nature, and ungoverned in their passions Â… the right of the strongest prevails amongst them in the fullest sense of the term". He visits Tchimket - modern-day Shymkent in Kazakhstan - where the governor offers them two hundred soldiers as an escort on their way to Tashkent, where "The city is full of life; the streets are crowded; the people dance before the doors of the houses, others have music in their gardens; one imagines oneself in a continuous fête", but where the governor impounds the caravan and the Kokoandians' gifts from the Tsar. Once at Kokand - "very large and populous; there are not less than four hundred mosques" - Nazarov secures his audience with the khan, a man "of about five-and-twenty Â… dressed in a shawl decorated with golden fringes and acorns" - and presents the Tsar's letter and gifts. Having declined to hand over what remains of the merchants' goods or turn renegade as restitution for the death of the envoys, and having declared himself willing to face execution in the knowledge of the vengeance that the Tsar would visit upon his murderers; Nazarov's Cossack guard is dismissed and he finds himself under house arrest. The khan then proposes that he accompany him on a hunting trip to Marghilan with the intention of moving him further from any possible assistance. Nazarov spends some months travelling the Ferghana valley, visiting amongst other places Andijan, where the khan kept a game preserve, and Namanghan, notable as a centre for handcrafts, and horticulture; "Throughout this sandy steppe we saw very populous villages; the inhabitants appeared to be extremely well off, and to want nothing that can make their existence happy; their countenances have an expression of the most perfect contentment". The party then returns to Kokand, where Nazarov receives the reply to the Tsar's letter and is sent on his way with a small escort. He makes his circuitous return via the recently conquered town of Urutupa, Khujand, a thriving city now in Tajikistan, and revisits Tashkent, before again braving the Kirghiz and reaching Petropavlovsk on 15 October 1814. Thus ended Nazarov's perilous mission to Central Asia, one of the few such accounts to be published, the edition being underwritten by Nikolai Petrovich Rumyantsev (1754-1826), Russian Foreign Minister and Imperial Chancellor, who was a prominent patron of arts, a collector and bibliophile, and a supporter of Russian exploration, who sponsored Krusenstern and Lisianski's first Russian circumnavigation of 1803-6.

[Collection of Tracts and Speeches pertaining to Queen Caroline]

London, 1821. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary half calf and paste paper boards. Rebacked preserving spine. Very good. 1 vols. 8vo. The Countess of Jersey's Copies. Collection of pamphlets from the "Queen Caroline Affair" (1820), with the ownership signatures of the Countess of Jersey, Sarah Sophia Child Villiers (1785-1867). She was a banking heiress with a colossal income; her husband, fifth Earl of Jersey, famed as a foxhunter and sportsman, was the son of Frances Villiers, a notorious coquette and royal mistress of George IV when Prince of Wales. Sarah Jersey was "one of the most prominent hostesses and social figures of her generation … her houses became centres for the whig party. … Her love of being at the centre of attention, perhaps, as much as conviction led her to take up the unfashionable cause of Queen Caroline when George IV was seeking to divorce her: she championed the queen with such frenzied fervour that her friends began to doubt her reason" (ODNB). The first three titles are exceedingly scarce; the fourth title is more widely held in institutions. Includes: 1. Substance of Lord (Thomas) Erskine's Speech in the House of Lords ... the 14th of July 1820, on moving that a list of the witnesses intended to be examined in support of the Bill of Pains and Penalties should forthwith be delivered to the Queen. London, 1820. From T. Author inscribed on title-page. and signed there "Countess Jersey /1820." [2], 23, [1, imprint] pp. OCLC: 38864669. 2. Speeches of Mr. Brougham, Mr. Denman, and Dr. Lushington, containing the defence of Her Majesty the Queen. London, 1820. 58; 90; 38 pp. Signed on title-page "Countess of Jersey/ Berkeley Square."         The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets: With Critical Observations On Their Works A New Edition, Corrected

London: Printed for F.C. and J. Rivington, et al., 1821. Early nineteenth-century edition of Johnson's Lives of the Poets, first published between 1779 and 1781. The major work of his final years, these virtuosic character sketches are now recognized as a turning point in literary biography. Led by "the honest desire of giving useful pleasure," Johnson drew on decades of reading and conversation to sum up the English poets of the previous century, including Milton, Dryden, Gay, Pope, Young, and Gray. Sharp and straightforward, Johnson invites his readers to debate, as in his pointed account of Jonathan Swift: "He pays no court to the passions; he excites neither surprise nor admiration; he always understands himself; and his reader always understands him." The characteristically effusive James Boswell calls this work "the richest, most beautiful, and indeed most perfect, production of Johnson's pen." A near-fine early edition, in a stunning contemporary binding. Two octavo volumes, contemporary full straight-grain red morocco, boards elaborately stamped in gilt and blind, spine panels lettered and decorated in gilt, brown coated endpapers, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt. Occasional light toning to text blocks, page 246 of Volume I mispaginated 426, front board of Volume II lightly scuffed. Nineteenth-century ink presentation inscription to first flyleaf of both volumes ("E dono sociorum"), later pencil inscription to first flyleaf of Volume I.

Flora Londinensis containing a history of the plants indigenous to Great Britain, illustrated by figures of the natural size. A new edition, enlarged by George Graves and William Jackson Hooker.

      G. Graves, London 1821 - 7 Bände. London, G. Graves, 1821. Gr.-Folio (51x32 cm). Mit 646 kolorierten Kupfertafeln. Grüne Halbchagrinlederbände der Zeit mit goldgepr. Rückentitel, Filetenvergoldung auf Rücken und Deckeln, Kopfgoldschnitt. (Gelenke fachgerecht restauriert). Hunt 650. - Nissen BBI 440. - Dunthorne 87. - Henrey 596. "Different copies vary in the number of plates" (Henrey 596). Aufl., S. 89 "a splendid work". Sprache: Englisch Grüne Halbchagrinlederbände der Zeit mit goldgepr. Rückentitel, Filetenvergoldung auf Rücken und Deckeln, Kopfgoldschnitt.         Archive of Autograph Manuscripts.

This clergyman graduated from the New Brunswick Theological Seminary (oldest Protestant seminary in North America) in 1821 and began serving the parish of Stone Arabia, New York, in 1822, along with churches in local small communities such as Manheim, Danube (Indian Castle), Salisbury, Columbia, Second Herkimer, Ephratah and Remsen Snyder's Bush; Ketcham was a close friend of Martin Van Buren, who as president appointed him as U.S. Indian Agent in 1839, assigned to relocate some Potawatomi Indians from Michigan and Indiana beyond the Mississippi River; he served as a hospital chaplain for a time during the Civil War, and spent his last years on a farm near St. Louis. A fascinating archive totalling perhaps 200 to 300 manuscript pages, 1820s-30s vintage, consisting of a dozen or more actual manuscripts sermons actually preached by Ketcham -- often followed by his notes indicating when and where he had preached each particular sermon. These vary in size from quite small (32mo) to 8vo, and in length from several tightly-lettered pages to a dozen or more pages. All are fairly neatly penned in Ketcham's small, sometimes miniscule hand in brown ink on moderately age toned stock with occasional foxing. In addition, also present are two small (16mo and 24mo), thick sewn pamphlets containing Ketcham's extensive and detailed Hebrew grammar notes and a small sheaf of varying-size notes on theological matters and partial sermon notes. It is most unusual to find actual working draft manuscript sermons, as delivered, showing how RCA (Reformed Church in America) clergy presented their message in early 19th century New England. A remarkable collection certainly worth further research.

Heinrich von Kleists hinterlassene Schriften, herausgegeben von L. Tieck.

Berlin: Gedruckt und verlegt bei G. Reimer 8vo (19.5 cm; 7.75"). lxxviii, 290 pp.. 1821 Posthumous publication for the first time of a selection of Kleist's plays and poetry (he committed suicide in 1811). Tieck, the editor, presents here "Prinz Friedrich von Homburg," "Die Herrmannsschlacht," "Fragment aus dem Trauerspiel Robert Guiskard," and several poems. Kleist's life was a troubled one financially, psychologically, and creatively. The Encyclopaedia Britannica (11th ed.) characterizes him as "by far the most important North German dramatist of the Romantic movement, and no other of the Romanticists approaches him in the energy with which he expresses patriotic indignation. Later 19th-century blue-green marbled paper–covered boards; foxing and browning as typical of the paper with but a few odd spots additionally, and perhaps six leaves with a stain as from a spill, extending across text but not hampering reading. Very readable in both senses; a decent, solid copy of an important work of German literature.

Following the achievement of independence from Spain in 1821, El Salvador along with the rest of Central America had a brief flirtation with being part of Mexico, but with the fall of Iturbide and the collapse of the first Mexican empire, El Salvador and the rest of Central America formed a confederation, with Guatemala being the more equal of the supposed five equals. The Confederation itself collapsed as unworkable in 1838 and following the dissolution of it, the political and social history of El Salvador was characterized by a wrenching dynamic of Liberal vs. Conservative forces each wanting to control society and the government. But added to that were the ambitions of its neighbors, especially Guatemala, and occasionally Honduras and even Nicaragua. Then there was the problem of Britain and its citizens' investments in the country and the need to protect those interests. This assemblage provides rare documents on many of the issues and the personalities of the era. Of the 26 publications, we find only 8 to be held in U.S. libraries, mostly at only one library (two being held at two). A full list available and the condition statement below is keyed to it.

Aquatint vervaardigd in 1822-23 door J.A. Lütz naar het ontwerp van H.P. Oosterhuis. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. Prijs: € 975,-.
