A View of the Elementary Principles of Education, founded on the study of the nature of man.

      - Edinburgh, for Constable 1821. Octavo slightly later half calf (rubbed); 360pp. Scattered spots or browning. Abram Combe's copy inscribed with his name and address; the writing of his name looks like George Combe's hand. His brothers George (who revised and had published this book) and Andrew, were the most ardent disciples and prominent expositers of Spurzheim's doctrines but Abram (who seems the most interesting of them) is best known as a disciple of Robert Owen; he ruined himself building an Owenite community in Lanarkshire and died in 1827. There are probably as many phrenologists as quakers among the social reformers of the 19th century and many of them, despite modern views of phrenology, can still be regarded as progressives in the best sense. Spurzheim himself though has a mixed record. Many of his ideas of reform will now be viewed with abhorrence as the foundation of social engineering in the worst sense. And he will be considered no friend of women - here he responds sternly to Mary Wollstonecraft, points out her fundamental error in regarding herself as emblematic of women, and outlines an approach to education that accounts for both the individual and irreconcilable differences between the sexes.         Autograph letter signed ("Mor. Rugendas") to an unnamed recipient].Munich, 21 December 1852. 8vo (22 x 14 cm). In German. With: (2) [AUTOGRAPH]. REGNET, Carl Albert. [Manuscript note about Rugendas, signed ("Regnet")].Munich, 13 January 1869. In German.

      - Cf. Borba de Moraes, p. 754; Regnet, Münchener Künstlerbilder II, pp. 132-141. A 4-page letter by the widely-travelled German painter Rugendas, famous for his sumptuously illustrated book Voyage pittoresque dans le Brésil, which was the fruit of his travels in Brazil (1821-1825). Inspired by Von Humboldt, he sailed again for South America in 1831, travelling through Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. In 1846 he departed for Europe, spending his last years in Munich and Weilheim an der Teck. The King of Bavaria purchased his sketches in exchange for a life annuity of 1200 florins per year. Apparently, Rugendas was still in need of money, since he writes in the present letter that he wants to travel to Prussia to ask the King for a salary "von dem es sich's gut hier leben ließ - ungefähr wie Humboldt in Paris lebte .". He further mentions the preparation of a "Künstlerball", for which the conductor and opera director Karl Perfall had composed the music. Rugendas refers to the famous "Künsterlfeste", theme parties that took place every year during carnival. The letter may have been addressed to Rugendas's friend Carl Albert Regnet, a District Officer in Munich. This is at least suggested by the added document, which is signed by Regnet and which opens with the remark "Zum Briefe meines lieben unvergeßlichen Freundes Moritz Rugendas möchten ein Paar Zeile am Platze sein", followed by details on Rugendas's life and works. Regnet would later honour Rugendas with an extensive entry in his 2-volume biographical dictionary Münchener Künstlerbilder (1871).In very good condition.

      - For Mouchez: DSB IX, p. 551. Four letters by the Madrid-born French naval officer (later Admiral), explorer and hydrographer Amédée Ernest Mouchez (1821-1892), written to his wife in France (apparently Paris) during his hydrographic expedition to map the Brazilian coast aboard the La Motte-Piquet, dated 20 May, 31 May-13 June, 13 June, 14 June -27 August. The 61 pages of text nearly form a journal of his voyage, with detailed day by day accounts of the progress of the expedition, his own and the crew's moods, the political situation in Brazil, anecdotes about the trials and tribulations of life in Brazil, etc. He wrote the present letters toward the end of his third expedition to Brazil, which ran from 1864 to 1866. Having not seen his wife and daughters for two years he felt quite homesick and eagerly awaited his return to France. The outside pages of 3 double leaves have rusty imprints of paperclips formerly used to keep the leaves together, 1 double leaf has a small hole slightly affecting three words and a few have minor tears along the fold. In very good condition. A detailed account of events and Mouchez's personal views during his third South American expedition.

Queen Mab [unmutiliated]

London: W. Clark, 1821. Paper-Covered Boards. Fine. First published edition of Shelley's first lengthy poem, with the full unexpurgated text. 8vo: [2, title page],3-89[text],[2,fly-title Notes with publisher's statement on verso],93-182 [notes in French, Latin and Greek]pp. Without the very rare poetical dedication to Shelley?s first wife and the final publisher?s advertisements (identical in both respects to the Tinker copy, which is also unmutilated and printed on Whatman paper). Original drab paper-covered boards sympathetically rebacked, later paper spine label. Printed on fine thick Whatman paper, probably one of the ?elegantly printed? copies referred to by the publisher in some early advertisements (See Forman 23: "the ordinary ones are not of a high quality . . ."). A splendid copy in original boards, text clean, binding tight and secure with faint marks to back cover. Forman 22-23. Granniss 19. Tinker 1888. NCBEL III, 314. Ashley Library V p.150; Hayward 225; Wise, A Shelley Library p.92 Preceded by an edition of some 250 copies privately printed in 1813, but ?unknown until [this] piratical reproduction of it in 1821 (which Shelley vainly tried to suppress by an injunction) excited attention, and [the poem] obtained a celebrity long denied to his maturer and more truly poetical writings.? (DNB v. 52, p. 33) The dedication to his former wife was particularly embarrassing to Shelley, since his marriage to Harriet ended in 1814, and she committed suicide in 1816. Forman notes regarding this edition that ?some copies contain the whole text and notes intact, while others have a few of the most aggressive passages mutilated by omission of words and even verses [mutilations, when present, occur on pp. 36, 54, 55, 65, 77, 82, 146-48, and 171, with various assertions in the notes replaced by printed sequences of dashes]. Queen Mab's literary text consists of nine cantos and seventeen notes. Six of these notes comprise extended prose meditations on free love, on how Necessity functions in the spiritual and physical universe, on atheism (which reiterates Shelley's views in The Necessity of Atheism), on the relationship between Christ and the dogma of Christianity, and on vegetarianism." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.

Paris, J.B. O'Dowd & Philipp ont écrit que "Mrs Lachapelle wrote a splendid Practice of obstetrics published in Paris in 1825". Références bibliographiques : Garrison & Morton, 6170 : "Mme La Chapelle was a famous midwife and a colleague of Baudelocque. She supervised 5,000 deliveries and her vast experience enabled her to write her book. She reduced the 94 theoretical presentations suggested by Baudelocque to 22. The above, posthumously edited by her nephew, represents her life work." ; Cutter IS & Viets HR : Short history of midwifery, p. 94 et 199 : "Madame Lachapelles 'three volumes contain much valuable material and supplement in an important way Baudelocque's own tretises." ; O'Dowd MJ & Philipp EE : The history of obstetrics & gynaecology, p. 173 : "Mrs Lachapelle wrote a splendid Practice of obstetrics published in Paris in 1825" ; Owen H : Simulation in obstetrics, gynecology and midwifery, In: Simulation in Healthcare Education: An Extensive History, pp. 201-202 : "Mme Lachapelle, Chief midwife at the Hospice de la Maternité, was an innovative educator who facilitated small group learning on simulators early in the 19th century and introduced simulation-based debriefing after difficult cases. The format of the lessons given by Mme Lachapelle was described in this book." ; Ogilvie M & Harvey J : The Biographical Dictionary of Women in Science: Pioneering Lives From Ancient Times to the Mid-20th Century, p. 731. © S.A.S.

[Four autograph letters, signed, to his wife, Carlo]. Pernambuco, Cayenne, 20 May-27 August 1866. 8vo (21 x 13.5 cm). In French, in brown ink on paper.

For Mouchez: DSB IX, p.

Faustus: From the German of Goethe.

Boosey and Rodwell & Martin, London. 1821 - First edition. pp.viii, 86, 1 List of Plates. 28 plates, engraved by [Henry] Moses, from the original copper etchings which [Moritz] Ret[z]sch made for the German edition. Quarto. Original cloth-backed pictorial paper boards. Coleridge insisted that he "had never put pen to paper as a translator of Faust" which does not quite accord with what Goethe wrote in a letter to his son, in 1820, saying that Coleridge was already well under way with the translation. There are various theories as to why Coleridge did not wish his name put to the translation the most plausible of which, according to Frederick Burwick and James C. McKusick, editors of the 2007 Oxford University Press edition of Faustus, was that when he first undertook to do the translation, in 1814, he did not wish to be associated with Goethe's unorthodox religious views, which is ironic given that he seemed to be making Faustian pacts of his own, not least in his increasing use of opium. A more prosaic reason is that he had already received an advance of £100 for the translation from John Murray, a figure which he considered "humiliatingly low". Only about a quarter of the play was translated into verse, in a style recognisably Coleridge's, and the rest was summarised in prose passages. The fragile paper boards are rubbed at the edges and there is some sporadic spotting throughout, otherwise a very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany. By the Rev. Tho. Frognall Dibdin.

London, Printed for the author by W. Bulmer and W. Nicol, 1821. - Trois volumes grand in-8, [4]-XXV-[6]-462-LXXIX-[1] +[4]-555 + [4]-662-LXII pages. Brunet II, 682-683. « Ouvrage magnifique » : Graesse II, 383. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
