Corinth, and other Poems. Dedicated (by Permission) to the Right Hon. Viscountess Anson.

Printed by Ellerton and Henderson ?, London 1821 - First edition, scarce. The three decades following the publication of Byron's narrative poem 'The Siege of Corinth' (1816) saw a profusion of dramatic and poetic reinterpretations, but this is one of the first (it predates Charlotte de Humboldt's Corinth, A Tragedy by seventeen years). It is also one of the most original, for whilst Earle touches on Byron's subject-the Ottoman massacre of the Venetian garrison at Corinth-Earle covers a much broader range of Corinthian history. She opens with an account of the 7th Century BCE tyrant Cypselus, before proceeding to outline the gradual moral decline of the city-state, before the arrival of Paul with his promise of salvation. The tone of the collection is devout, and moralising, but Earle wears her classical learning lightly and the poems are elucidated by useful contextualising notes. The other works include the charmingly-titled 'Impromptu on a Nosegay of Roses', as well as 'Epistle from Bonaparte to Maria Louisa' and 'The Maniac's Tale'. The thirteen-page List of Subscribers includes the Archbishop of York. 8vo (210 x 129 mm), pp. 111, [1]; lightly and uniformly browned, endleaves foxed; contemporary diced calf, blind and gilt borders, gilt edges, spine ornately gilt with raised bands; rebacked, preserving original spine (one section of missing); contemporary dedication inscription to endpaper: 'Charlotte Mary Cobb, as a birthday present, from her affectionate sister M. C. Cobb, 19th Decr 1821'. [COPAC records six copies, at The British Library, Bodley, Cambridge, Leeds, The National Trust and Aberdeen, to which WorldCat adds Indiana and Yale. Not in Jackson; Jackson, Women p. 113.] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(vol. 2, p. 279) "This discovery has been called the most momentous single discovery in physiology after Harvey." Norman 1418.

Sehr selten. [Attributes: First Edition]

Chronological Retrospect, or Memoirs of the Principal Events of Mahommedan History. From the Death of the Arabian Legislator, to the Accession of the Emperor Akbar, and the Establishment of the Moghul Empire in Hindustaun. From the Original Persian Authorities.

London: J. Booth; Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown; and Black, Kingsbury, Parbury, and Allen, 1821 - 3 volumes in 4, quarto (272 × 208 mm). Recent brown half sheep period-style, spines gilt tooled on raised bands, blind tooled in compartments, red and black twin labels, marbled sides and edges. An attractive set: clean and well-margined. Large folding handcoloured map of Asia (from the eastern Meditarrenean to Korea, and from Siberia to Mysore). First edition sheets with title pages dated 1821 and issued by the publishers on completion of the work, scarce. A significant work by the orientalist and army officer David Price (1762–1835), who saw action in the Third Anglo-Mysore War against Tipu Sultan, and, on retiring from the East India Company's service, settled in Wales and "devoted himself to writing long, leisurely works on Arabian, Persian, and Indian history. Of these the best-known and the most important is Chronological Retrospect This covers the period from the death of Muhammad to the accession of Akbar. The earlier volumes are based chiefly on the Persian chronicles of Mirkhand and Khandamir, and are most detailed and accurate with respect to Persian history; but in the last volume Abu'l-Fazl is largely used. It is written in the over-ornate style of Price's sources, but it is the painstaking work of a genuine scholar anxious to do full justice to his authorities. Without pretending to any striking grasp or generalization, it is nevertheless useful and was for many years almost the only English work of reference for some branches of Eastern history" (ODNB).       R Ackermann, 1821, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good Condition. One of the best topographical plate books of its kind. This large quarto volume is illustrated throughout with glorious full-page aquatints as called for there are 24 aquatint plates, one steel engraved and coloured map and an end of text aquatint illustration at the end and a coloured vignette on the title page. The colours throughout are strong and the printing is very fine. The interior is bright and clean and free from foxing. The plate facing p165 is about 1cm smaller all round than the surrounding pages though there is no clear reason for this.       dalla Tipografia Bianco, Torino 1821 - In-8° (205x130mm), pp. 157, brossura originale azzurra con titolo calligrafato al dorso. Candida copia in barbe. Prima edizione. Leghorn from the Convent of Montenero

Taken from the travel notebook of an english admiral, William Paget, who called them "Sketches in the South of France, Coast of Italy, Rome, Elba and Lombardy, Lake of Como and Maggiore in the years 1819-20-21" as can be seen from his own handwriting. These works present views of the Liguria region, parts of Tuscany (especially the island of Elba), and a large number dedicated to the lakes of Lombardy. The artistic quality is not the same for all of these water-colours and their author is more interested in the natural scenery than in representing people. It can be seen that they were created by an amateur painter and their greatest interest lies in their iconographical an decorative values. From the point of view of artistic techiniques these works were created by first making a preliminary drawing with a pencil, usually on thick laid paper (typically used in early nineteenth-century England), and then painting it with water-colours. Since these works come in different sizes, the notebooks originally might have been more than one. Dimensioni 590 205mm

Minor edgewear, light soiling to exterior, moderate toning, light foxing to a few leaves. A scarce title. * Only edition. The well-insured ships owned by M'Dougall and Menzies had a suspicious tendency to founder. This was not a problem for the firm. Indeed, insurance payments enabled it to prosper. The present case involved two ships that were built by the firm, then scuttled for insurance. The Friends of Glasgow, with a cargo of coffee for Hamburg, and the Mary, with a cargo of calico cloth for Trinidad. Providentially, and just like previous scuttlings, the captains and crews were saved. M'Dougall was indicted for insurance fraud. He successfully faked insanity at his trial and escaped with a light sentence: banishment to Botany Bay for the rest of his life.         Presentation Copy from Joseph Story: Amendments of the Constitution.

1821 - Amendments to the Massachusetts Constitution: A Presentation Copy from Joseph Story [Massachusetts]. [Constitution]. [Story, Joseph (1779-1845)]. Amendments of the Constitution of Massachusetts, Proposed by the Convention of Delegates, Assembled at Boston, On the Third Wednesday of November, A.D. Eighteen Hundred and Twenty. With their Address to the People of this Commonwealth. Boston: Published by Order of the Convention. Russell and Gardner, Printers. 1821. First Edition. [iii], 4-32 pp. Octavo (10-1/4" x 6"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in self-wrappers, untrimmed edges. Moderate toning, minor edgewear to a few leaves, light foxing and presentation inscription to title page, final leaf signed by Convention Secretary Benjamin Pollard. * First edition. Presented to the Essex Historical Society, this copy is inscribed in the third person "from Hon Judge Story." The great Supreme Court justice was member of the convention to amend to Massachusetts Constitution. Mel A. Topf in wrote about Story's importance at the Convention: "Story brought his prestige and leadership, together with his considerable political and legal skills, to what was for him and his allies at the convention the overriding mission: to save the Massachusetts frame of government from the democratizing forces (or from radicalism, the term Story used) that were threatening the Republic itself. It would be difficult to overemphasize the centrality of this mission to Story's theory of the judiciary. Story, along with Daniel Webster and others, led the conservative faction toward its goal of creating an alliance to protect the Massachusetts constitution from democratic extremes of the radicals, whose program was the convention's main agenda." An excellent association connecting Joseph Story to a critical event in his judicial career in Massachusetts.         The poetical works of Sir Walter Scott

Détails : Tome 1 : The Lay of the Last Minstrel. Tome 2 : Marmion. Tome 3 : The Lady of the Lake. Tome 4 : Rokeby. Tome 5 : The Lord of the Isles. Tome 6 : Thomas the Rhymer. Tome 7 : The Vision of Don Roderick - Halidon Hill - Ballads, and Miscellaneous Pieces. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First Parisian collective edition, printed on the presses of Didot. A portrait frontispiece. Binders half black shagreen contemporary in corners. ALMANACH LYRIQUE DES DAMES

Paris: Chez Louis Janet, [1821]. This delightful little jewel is irresistible in every way, perhaps especially as a glimpse into the world of a privileged young lady in the France of the Bourbon Restoration. The British Library holds a similar binding (shelfmark c108bb8) on an almanac also printed in 1821 by Janet with the cover title "Almanach des Demoiselles" (Almanac for Young Ladies). Unlike the pocket calendars intended for men of business, there are no dull lists of currencies, commercial laws, or government officials. Instead, the calendar here is prefaced by pages of light romantic poetry, accompanied by engravings of fashionably attired women, which the owner could have perused in moments of leisure, as a modern woman might distract herself with her smart phone. Its ephemeral nature and the fragility of the binding make this a remarkable survival--especially in such a fine state.. 103 x 61 mm. (4 x 2 1/2"). 48 pp., [12] leaves. A CHARMING "FIXÉ SOUS VERRE" BINDING, both covers with an engraving of a putto playing a harp--that on the front hand colored--"fixed" (i.e., painted) under thin plates of glass, the glass boards with a gilt frame made of heavy gilt paper embossed with a pearl pattern and incorporating floral cornerpieces, flat spine of gilt paper in a striated design, blue endpapers, all edges gilt. With six engraved plates of romantic heroines, title page of calendar section with engraved vignette, page for each month with a small vignette landscape set within a garland, engraved folding calendar for the year 1822, each month headed by a zodiac sign. A touch of rubbing to extremities, otherwise A VERY FINE SPECIMEN, the fragile binding beautifully preserved, the contents clean and fresh. Its ephemeral nature and the fragility of the binding make this a remarkable survival--especially in such a fine state.

At thebottom of page 378, vol 1 of the Plough Boy, there is a coment by LordDalhousie (in pencil) on the article entitled "Flemish Husbandry" witha comparative table of produce of Flemish and English farmers, LordDalhousie remarks as follows: It is not the bleak mountains of Scotlandthat have progressed so much beyond the Agriculture of England, but therich Lowlands south of the mountains. The editor originallylisted as Henry Homespun, Jr. was the pseudonym for Solomon Southwick(1773-1839), whose name appeared in the magazine title in Volume 1,number 34 with the added title, "The Plough Boy and Journal of the Boardof Agriculture". The periodical had been selected as the official organof the Board of Agriculture for the State of New York. A very popularperiodical, it was printed for over twenty years. Philemon Wright(1760-1839) created the first permanent settlement in the Ottawa Valleyregion in 1800 on the north side of the Ottawa River. It became aprimarily agricultural community covering what is now the city ofGatineau and Aylmer. At about 37,000 acres it became the most developedfarming area in Lower Canada. Farms included Gateno, Columbia Falls,Columbia, Britannia, Chaudiere and Dalhousie Farm. Wright shared aninterest with Lord Dalhousie in the development and improvement ofagriculture in Canada. Certainly a library of agricultural books wouldhave been of prime interest to Wright. George Ramsay, 9th Earl ofDalhousie, was recognized as having an ardent interest in agriculturalimprovement and was noted as inspiring the formation of agriculturalsocieties throughout the Colonies. He obviously had studied "The PloughBoy" and on page 381 of Volume I, as noted above. In Nova Scotia, LordDalhousie was a friend and supporter of Scottish agricultural writer,John Young, who dedicated his book, on improving Canadian agriculture,"Letters of Agricola" (Halifax, 1822) to the Governor-General. Dr. B.R.MacKay, had a long career at the Geological Survey, (1907-1953). He wasa valued member of the Ottawa Historical Society and was known forleading the campaign to save historical buidings or sites. He had so manybooks in his large house it began to sink under the weight. He donatedmany articles to the Bytown museum and claimed among his prizes thepresent set of books, a rope that Wright had used to tie his first timberraft, etc. He also had Sir John A.
