An historical account of the Colony of New South Wales and its dependent settlements; in illustration of twelve views, engraved by W. Preston, a convict; from drawings taken on the spot by Captain Wallis, of the Forty-Sixth Regiment. To which is subjoined an accurate map of Port Macquarie, and the newly discovered River Hastings, by J. Oxley, Esq. Surveyor General to the Territory.

One of Australia's finest early plate books, coloured by a skilled hand to striking effect. London : R. Ackermann, 1821. Folio, half crushed morocco over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, lacking the half-title, pp [iv] (with the "Extract from the Sidney Gazette"); 42, followed by 12 engraved plates of views (six are double page) and a final plate of Oxley's map of Port Macquarie; text leaves very good, marginal damp stains to most plate leaves (as usual), all the engravings with fine hand-colouring in period style. The second issue, with the additional leaf quoting Macquarie's praise of Wallis, a feature not present in the earlier issue. 'Wallis's book has a most important position in a collection of Australian plate books. It is the first book of general landscape views of early New South Wales, representing the first great celebration of the progress of the colony made under the civilising rule of Governor Macquarie and, indeed, of Wallis himself. It is also the first plate book, properly so called, to consist entirely of plates engraved in the colony by a colonial engraver ... Wallis's book of views should be in every serious collection of Australian plate books' (Wantrup). The Mitchell Library's well-publicised purchase of the original Wallis album of watercolours in 2011 has solved the riddle of artistic authorship of the original drawings from which the engravings were made. Contrary to the claim Wallis made on the title page - that the drawings were his - the inscriptions in the Wallis album of watercolours prove that the original artworks were created by Australia's most famous convict artist, Joseph Lycett. Ferguson, 842; Wantrup, 217b; Butler, Printed Images, pp 50-59.

        2 Running Horses

Printed in the lithographic studio of Delpech, Paris 1821 - This mid 19th century black and white lithograph after a drawing by Carle Vernet depicts 2 running horses. Printed by Delpech, from Divers Croquis de Chevaux. Measures approximately 16" x 22 1/2". Antoine Charles Vernet, also known as Carle, was the son and pupil of the marine painter, Claude Joseph Vernet. From an early age he showed a tremendous aptitude for drawing and in 1782 was successful in winning the coveted Prix de Rome. Under the Empire, Vernet was awarded the Legion of Honor for his drawings of the Italian campaign. However, he is most noted as a painter and lithographer of horses, a subject to which he was devoted during the years of the Restoration. His work was so admired that Louis XVIII conferred the order of St. Michael upon him. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, horses were an invaluable aspect of everyday life. They provided transportation and sporting entertainment and thus, their breeding was of great importance. Artists celebrated the beauty and agility of the thoroughbred horse, as can be seen in Vernet¿s accomplished lithographs. Indeed, his equestrian passion was such that he himself was an avid horseman and just days before his death, at the age of seventy-eight, was seen racing as if he was a spry young man.

Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-Ship Essex, of Nantucket ?

Published by W.B. Gilley ? J. Seymour, Printer, New York 1821 - First edition. 128 pp. 8vo. A wonderful association copy belonging to the Macy and Coffin families. This is the first edition of Owen Chase's first-hand account of the wreck of the whaleship Essex and the ensuing tale of survival and cannibalism on the open seas.On November 20, 1820, the Nantucket whaleship Essex, under the command of Captain George Pollard, was 1,200 miles east of the Marquesas when it was attacked and sunk by a large sperm whale. The whale rammed the Essex twice, and by Chase's account did so deliberately; the second attack crushed the ship's bow and she quickly sank. Twenty men escaped on three whaleboats rigged with makeshift masts. Their ensuing struggle to survive at sea with little water or food is one of the most extraordinary and harrowing shipwreck accounts.Three of the men chose to remain on uninhabited Henderson Island (100 miles north east of Pitcairn Island) and were later rescued. Fear of cannibals lead the other men to avoid the Marquesas and instead set course for the western coast of South America, some 2,000 miles away. With insufficient supplies for the crossing and men beginning to suffer and die from dehydration and starvation, the survivors resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. The men on Pollard's boat were forced to draw straws to chose who among them would be sacrificed to feed the rest. In perhaps the story's most gruesome detail, it was the 17-year-old Owen Coffin, who was sailing under the care of his cousin Captain Pollard, who drew the black spot. After more than 90 days at sea, the survivors were rescued off the coast of South America. In all a total of seven men were cannibalized and eight survived - the three left on Henderson Island and five men, including Owen Chase and Captain Pollard, on two whaleboats.Owen Chase, first mate of the Essex, began his account of the ordeal shortly after his return to Nantucket. It was finished 4 months later with the help of ghostwriter, William Coffin, Jr., a fellow 20-something Nantucketer who had attended Harvard. Coffin was later the ghostwriter of Obed Macy's history ofNantucket, and may have ghostwritten an account of the Globe mutiny. "His published literary career appears to have begun, however, with the narrative of the Essex disaster" (Philbrick, In the Heart of the Sea, p. 203). Chase's Narrative remained the only known first-hand account of the shipwreck until the discovery in 1960 of a notebook by cabin boy Thomas Nickerson, containing his recollections of the events written years later in 1876.Herman Melville read the Narrative in the 1840s, having acquired his copy in quite extraordinary circumstances. While whaling on the Acushnet he gammed with the Nantucket whaleshipLima; on board was Owen Chase's son, who gave Melville a copy of the Narrative. Melville wrote in his copy: "The reading of this wondrous story upon the landless sea, & close to the very latitude of the shipwreck had a surprising effect on me.'' One effect, of course, was to use the example of a seemingly deranged or vindictive whale attacking a whaleship as inspiration for Moby-Dick. Melville would later base a character in his long poem Clarel on Captain Pollard. His copy of the Narrative contains many interesting annotations, including his opinion that the men could have quite easily survived had they sailed directly to Tahiti, and that the Narrative was certainly written with help: "There seems no reason to suppose that Owen himself wrote the Narrative. It bears obvious tokens of having been written for him, but at the same time, its whole air plainly evinces that it was carefully and conscientiously written to Owen's dictation of the facts."This copy of the Narrative in contemporary American sheep and with the early ownership signature of William Macy and the bookplate of Samuel Barlow Coffin. Both the Macys and Coffins were among the first English families to settle in Nantucket in the early 17th century, and both families were heavily involved in the islan [Attributes: First Edition]

HISTORY OF THE WAR OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Translated from the Italian, by George Alexander Otis

Philadelphia: Printed for the translator, 1821. Three volumes. 448; v,[1],567; xii,503pp. Recent half morocco and cloth boards. Tanned, with foxing. A good set. First English-language edition of this important early history of the American Revolution, first published in Italian in 1809. "This work grew out of a conversation held in 1806 in which those present were asked which modern event would make the best subject. Botta interpreted the American cause as a struggle for liberty. At every opportunity he excited the nationalistic aspirations of the Italians, and suggested analogies with Italy's past and contemporary history. Botta looked upon the creation of the United States as an example and inspiration for the formation of an Italy unified and free of foreign rule" - Hough. Jefferson owned a copy of the Italian first edition. In a letter to John Adams, Jefferson wrote that Botta (despite his habit of putting unattributed words into the mouths of his speakers), produced a history of the Revolution "with more detail, precision and candor than any writer I have yet met with." "Most valuable history of the Revolution up to its date" - Howes. HOWES B636. SABIN 6820. SAMUEL HOUGH, THE ITALIANS AND THE CREATION OF AMERICA 97. LARNED 1241. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 551.       London. 1821.. Hardcover. 29x20cm, 4p. (cgc) At the time of writing of this correspondence, Dalhousie was gover-nor-in-chief of Canada (1819 to 1828). A military man, he had fought throughout the American Revolution, the Peninsular Wars and was present at the Battle of Waterloo. During his tenure in Canada he came into conflict with Louis Joseph Papineau and the French -Canadian majority in the Assembly. On leaving Canada, Dalhousie was appointed commander-in-chief in India. Very interesting pre-Confederation ephemera which leads one to suspect that good wine was a scarcity in the colonies!!         [AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM THOMAS JEFFERSON TO THOMAS SULLY, EXPRESSING THANKS AND DISCUSSING A BOOK ORDER BEING SENT TO PARIS IN 1821]

Monticello, Va, 1821. [1]p., matted and framed with a later engraved portrait of Jefferson, the whole measuring 14 3/4 x 21 1/4 inches. Previously folded. Slightly browned, but overall a fine example. A friendly letter from Thomas Jefferson to the renowned American portraitist Thomas Sully, thanking the artist for gifts recently received, and agreeing to add a special request to a forthcoming book order being sent to Paris. Sully visited Jefferson at Monticello in March 1821 for the purpose of composing a portrait commissioned by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, established by Jefferson during his presidency. The gifts mentioned at the outset of the letter are no doubt a token of thanks for the artist's two weeks residence at Jefferson's estate. Sully apparently also requested that Jefferson seek out two books on architecture for him, the RECEUIL ET PARALLÈLE DES ÉDIFICES DE TOUT GENRE by Jean- Nicolas-Louis Durand and POMPEIANA by William Gell and John P. Gandy on the ruins and ongoing excavations at Pompeii. Jefferson here agrees to add the RECEUIL... to his forthcoming order to Paris booksellers, but informs Sully that the second title should be obtainable in the United States. The letter reads as follows: "Dear Sir, I have duly received your favor of the 5th & also the half dozen cups which you have been so kind as to have forwarded to me, for which accept my thanks. Ellen will express to you herself her obligations for what was addressed to her. I am this day writing to Paris for some books and gladly place among them the Recueil of M. Durand, which I presume was published there. for the Pompeiana I shall depend on our own bookstores. accept my sincere wishes for your happiness and success in all your undertakings and the assurance of my friendly esteem & respect." A fine Jefferson letter that touches on his book collecting habits as well as the production of a famous portrait of the third President.
