Suite de Gravures Coloriées Avec Leurs Explications par J. B. B. Eyriès. Paris: Librarie de Gide, n.d. [c. 1821]. First edition. Quarto (10 1/4 x 6 1/2 in; 259 x 164 mm). [56] pp. Twenty-four hand-colored aquatint plates. Vignette to title-page.Contemporary quarter crimson straight-grained morocco over red roan boards with blind-stamped border. Smooth spine with gilt rules and lettering. Corners and board edges a little rubbed. An excellent copy.OCLC/KVK record only three copies in institutional holdings worldwide, at BNF, N'tl Library of Scotland, and N'tl Museum of Wales."First edition of a scarce illustrated book. As a French view of their island neighbours it presents an interesting selection of characters: a baker, sailor, shrimp-seller, newsboy, dustman, May Day reveller, an artillery officer, judge, beefeater, alderman and the Lord Mayor of London. Clearly the notion of Angleterre stretches to the wider Britannic nation with the inclusion of a Welsh peasant, a Scots soldier and a highlander. The approximate date of publication may be deduced from a reference on p. 9 to British census of 1821. Eyriès produced similar volumes on the costumes of Austria, China, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey. Though each was issued separately over the course of several years, they were evidently sometimes combined to form the series Costumes" (COPAC).Colas 1013. Brunet II, col. 1142.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Fouque").

Nennhausen, "am Gründonnerstag [d. i. 24. III.] 1821.. 1 S. 4to..

(Paris, Delaunay, 1821).. circa 29,5 x 37,5 cm. Lithographs: title, folding map and 56 views, some in one colour Contemporary cardboard with printed original label to spine ("Atlas du voyage..."). Sabin 50230; Clark II, 47. The rare atlas only, without the 2 volumes of text and here with a total of 58 plates, instead of 59 (bibliographies seem to disagree but there are copies with a total of 59 - so here the plate 59, most likely a view of Egypt, is missing). The charming, sometimes a little naive lithographic plates were made after the author's own drawings. There is a folding map of the East coast of the United States, including the Missouri and Northwest territories and the Caribbean, among the views there are: New York harbor, a mastodon skeleton at the Philadelphia museum, "Encounter with a Rattle Snake" near the Ohio River, the port of St. Domingo, Niagara Falls, a view of St. Thomas, the Philadelphia hospital, Quaker costumes, "Costume des Negresses de St. Thomas," a country estate in Kingston (Jamaica), a church in New Orleans, "Sauvages du Mississippi" etc. Other plates show views from Italy (Livorno, Rome, Vesuvius, Aetna, Sicily etc.), two views of Malta and Gozzo and North Africa. The author is considered to have been one of the first passengers on a steamboat on the Mississippi. - Nice crisp copy, very clean and fresh, only very minor spotting. Binding rubbed, spine reinforced with paper. Plates of America complete, the last plate 59 must be of Egypt.

Life In London or, the Day and Night scenes of Jerry Hawthorne Esq. and His Elegant Friend Corinthian Tom, accompanied by Bob Logic, the Oxonian, in their Rambles and Sprees through the Metropolis...Embellished with Thirty-six Scenes from Real Life, Designed and Etches by I.R. & G. Cruikshank; and enriched also with numerous designs on wood by the same artists. London: Printed for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1821. First edition, first issue (part I priced 2s.6d and without footnote on p. 9) in the original parts, with three artists' proofs. Twelve tall octavo parts (10 x 6 3/8 in; 254 x 162 mm). 376, [4, catalog], [1, half-title], [1, blank], [title,], [1, blank], xvi pp. Thirty-six hand-colored aquatint engravings including frontispiece with tissue guards, numerous woodcuts, six-page engraved musical notation on three folding sheets (misbound in part 4 rather than in parts 8,9, and 10 as called for). With all called-for advertisements save the 2-page Author in Distress, and advertising leaf in part 2. With three artist's proofs of plates 6. 9. and 12 (prior to aquatinting or letters, with gray wash by artist to indicate tinting) and an additional proof before letters of plate 28, all loosely laid in.Original salmon printed wrappers, completely untouched. A bit soiled and stained, upper wrapper to part 2 present but detached, spines in varying states of distress. Otherwise an excellent copy. Chemised and housed within a later quarter morocco slipcase."By finding the right men [the Cruikshanks] for his work [Egan] made Life In London one the great successes of the day, comparable to that other triumphant alliance of humour and art in the pages of Dr Syntax" (Prideaux)."A journalist, and a well-known character in his day, [Pierce Egan] wrote nothing so popular as this Life in London. Indeed, the taste for it amounted to a craze. For his illustrations, Egan went to two brothers, Isaac Robert and George Cruikshank…the success of the work was so great that the artists could not colour the engravings fast enough for the demand. It suited the taste of the time, when a ‘fast’ life had become a sophisticated and conscious aim. Life in London is a guide to a fast life.…Part of the success enjoyed by [Pierce Egan’s Life in London] was due, no doubt, to its readers’ belief that they could name the originals of the fictitious characters. Imitations came swift and frequent…" (The Cambridge History of English and American Literature ).Cohn 262. Abbey, Life 281. Prideaux p. 307, 310, 335. Tooley 196.

        Elements of Political Economy

London: For Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy,, 1821. London: For Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy,, 1821. Octavo (221 × 135 mm). Original boards, edges uncut, rebacked to style, original printed paper spine label preserved. With the publisher's adverts. Corners lightly rubbed, occasional spotting, endpapers renewed. A very good copy. First edition of what Palgrave calls "Mill's masterpiece". In his preface Mill describes the Elements as "a school-book in political economy" – it was in fact based on the lessons he gave to his then barely teenaged son John Stuart Mill – and he disavows any claim to originality. Born and educated in Scotland, James Mill (1773–1836) moved to England, making his living as a journalist, meanwhile writing what became a three-volume History of British India (1817), which led to long-term employment in the London office of the East India Company. Mill's thinking on economics was strongly influenced by his close friendship with David Ricardo and on public policy by Jeremy Bentham. The Elements is valuable as a summary of contemporary received theories. It was translated into French in 1823 and a second, revised edition came out in 1824.

Egittologia.         Takings; Or, The Life of a Collegian

, 1821. 1821. first edition. Dedicated To The Eye Of The ConnoiseurDAGLEY, Richard (illustrator). [GASPEY, Thomas. author]. Takings; Or, The Life of a Collegian. A Poem. Illustrated by Twenty-Six Etchings, from Designs by R. Dagley. London: John Warren, 1821. First edition. Octavo. xxxix, [9], 184 pp. Twenty-six hand-colored plates. Bound by Wood of London ca. 1895, in full navy blue pebbled morocco with single fillet and gilt tulip cornerpieces, compartments decorated with gilt tulips, raised bands with gilt dots. Gilt-rolled edges, broad turn-ins with gilt cornerpieces. Top edge gilt. A fine copy.Rare, the last copy to come to auction was in 1999. The poem was anonymously written by Thomas Gaspey (1788-1871)."To the Admirers of those hasty Productions of the Pencil called Sketches, Gentlemen, In offering these subjects to your attention, I feel assured of every allowance on your part for their style of execution; and also that in your comments upon what the generality may call blots or scratches, you will lean to the favourable side, and pronounce them meaning and design. To those who are not gifted with your taste and feeling, I am aware the 'Takings' may not appear with all the advantage that I could wish; I must, therefore, request such persons to suspend their judgment till they have acquired that improved perception which finds an intentional grace, where ordinary vision sees only accident or deformity. The eye of the Connoisseur can penetrate the obscurity of redundant lines, separate their entanglements, and distinguish the latent shapes od beauty and vigour. In a scanty performance he can nevertheless discern the excellence which the artist contemplated" (Dagley, Dedication)."Richard Dagley (d. 1841), genre painter and engraver, was an orphan and was educated at Christ's Hospital, London. Having an interest in art, and being delicate, he was apprenticed to Thomas Cousens, a jeweller, watchmaker, and sometime painter of ornaments and miniatures, whose daughter Elizabeth (b. 1755) he married on 2 November 1785 at St James's, Westminster. The couple had two sons, Edward (b. 1790) and Richard (b. 1791). Dagley was a friend of Henry Bone, with whom he worked enamelling views on the backs of watches and mythological compositions on bracelets, and painting eyes for rings and brooches, as was then the fashion. He exhibited irregularly at the Royal Academy from 1785 until 1833, mostly genre pictures. His career was similarly erratic. He made several medals and took to watercolour drawing. About 1805 he was working as a drawing-master in a lady's school in Doncaster, but was back in London from 1815. "In 1818 he published A Compendium of the Theory and Practice of Drawing and Painting. Dagley reviewed books on art and, after the publication of his first book, Gems Selected from the Antique in 1804, with plates designed and engraved by him, he worked as an illustrator, most notably on Flim-Flams, a collection of anecdotes by Isaac D'Israeli, and for Takings, a humorous poem by Thomas Gaspey (1821). He also published books of his own engravings ‘illustrated’ in poetry or prose by others; his second volume on gems (1822) had poetry by Dr G. Croly and Death's Doings (1826) was a meditation on the arrival of death. Dagley's engraved work is often slight. As explained in the preface to Death's Doings: ‘I have endeavoured to show the way a certain class of writing may be embellished without incurring the expense of those laboured and highly finished engravings which make a work prohibitively expensive’. Dagley died in 1841" (Oxford DNB).Not in Tooley, Abbey, Martin Hardie or Bobins.

        De la Colonie de Frederiks-Oord

Gand,: J. N. Houdin,, 1821.. Gand,: J. N. Houdin,, 1821.. Octavo, uncut, quite dog-eared and generally worn paper wrappers, but a fine copy in good orginal condition. First French edition: history of the formation of an early socialist society in Europe. This is a French translation from the Dutch of a text by the reformer van den Bosch, who, along with his SocietÈ de Bienfaisance set up the colony of Frederiks-Oord in an attempt at social regeneration. In a movement similar to the kibbutzim of the twentieth century, the SocietÈ advocated reintegrating the disenfranchised and neglected by allotting them barren tracts of land which they could renew through their own labour. Within Frederiks-Oord all are given equal rights, but all must also submit to the communal impetus in the formation of 'un Ètat laborieux, mais productif, une existence honnÍte et indÈpendante.'Like so many utopian societies of the nineteenth century, an unquestioned faith in progress and innovation combines with an inherently positivistic notion that through work comes freedom and societal harmony. Throughout, there is a tension between blunt economic appraisals of the individual and idyllic portrayals of the community as a fantasy of ease and prosperity.

Untrimmed. Parts 49/50 and 55/56 with upper wrapper repairs and part numbers provided in inked facsimile. A few other minor repairs. Expected wear and soiling, otherwise an excellent, rarely seen set in its original parts. Housed in two modern green cloth drop-back clamshell boxes."From a bibliographical point of view, one of the most complicated and bewildering books ever published, rivaling Pickwick in the tangle of variant states that exist both in text and plates. The work had a tremendous success, probably out-rivaling in popularity its prototype, Egan's Life in London, and even the three Tours of Syntax. A difficult feature of the book is that two printers. printed copies, textually the same page by page, with only minor variations in the settings, and this, coupled with the fact that during the eight or nine years it was being reprinted, makes the whole vast output all 'first editions' but with innumerable states and variants that continually overlap one with the other" (Abbey)."Originally published in 56 parts, on completion the work was issued in boards. A few large paper copies were printed on royal paper hot pressed with proof impressions of the plates. Later copies were bound in publisher's cloth. A book full of contrarities and difficulties for the bibliographer, there being innumerable variations of the plates. I have examined twenty or thirty copies and noted their peculiarities and points but doubt if I have run them all to earth. The difficulties are further increased by many copies in modern bindings having been completed or made up of different issues giving combinations that are not true variations" (Tooley). An imitation of Pierce Egan’s Life in London "a work which was issued in and after July, 1821, in shilling numbers Imitations came swift and frequent Out of the sixty-five imitations of it which Egan stated that he had reckoned, the most important was Real Life in London. which was published in sixpenny numbers in 1821, with excellent illustrations by Heath, Alken, Dighton, Rowlandson and others. Real Life in London is a pleasanter book than its prototype. Some have held that Egan wrote it; but the author had a purer style, a cleaner mind and a wider knowledge of London than Egan. The book shows many more sides of London life than his; though the formal descriptions of well-known scenes or buildings, here and there inserted amid matter of a very different character, recall very forcibly Mr. Bouncer’s letters to his aunt in Verdant Green" (The Cambridge History of English and American Literature Abbey, Life 280.
