Bunny & Gold, Shoe Lane, 1820. Engraved title pages, numerous engraved plates, several folding. 3 vols. 8vo. Fine Copy of a Sporting Classic. Later brown three quarter morocco and cloth. Bookplates of Daniel Webster Evans laid in. Very good. Schwerdt I, pp. 133-4. A handsome copy of the octavo edition of this sporting classic (first published in 1801 in quarto), covering a profusion of field sports, as well as game laws. It went into many editions. Although this book is generally assumed to deal almost exclusively with hunting and shooting, and indeed is famous for its various portraits and descriptions of sporting dogs, over forty percent of it is actually devoted to angling, with 18 angling plates and extensive discussion of varieties of fish and where to take them, hooks and tackle, weather considerations, fish ponds, and other relevant subjects of angling interest. The book's exquisite engravings have ensured this work its lasting popularity.

Boston, 1820. Broadside, 15 x 9 1/2 inches. Old folds. Short closed tear in left margin along one fold, not affecting text. Docketed on verso in contemporary manuscript; contemporary autograph inscription in lower margin: "Copy attest Alden Bradford Sec[retary] of the Common[wealth]." Very good. Broadside proclamation announcing the results of a statewide vote to decide whether or not to call for delegates to change the state constitution. This was the second state constitutional convention, after the first of 1780, which resulted in nine amendments to the foundational document. Maine had been granted statehood in March 1820, a few months prior, separating it from Massachusetts. Having voted in town meetings across the state, the people of Massachusetts voted 11,756 to 6,593 in favor of amending the constitution. The governor therefore called upon all qualified citizens to assemble "on the third Monday of October next...[to] elect one or more Delegates...to meet Delegates from other Towns, in Convention at the State House, in Boston, on the third Wednesday of November next, to take into consideration the propriety and expediency of making any (and if any what) alterations or amendments in the present Constitution of Government of the Commonwealth...."

Oersted, John (Hans) Christian
Printed by C. Baldwin for Baldwin, Cradock & Joy, 1820. First Edition. Hardcover. The first edition in English of Oersted's magnum opus (pp. 273-276), preceded by a small Latin pamphlet (Experiemnta circa effectum conflictus electici in acum magneticum) also published in 1820. This work laid the foundation for the subsequent revolution in physics with the work of Michael Faraday following soon after and later Clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic radiation. Within a few months of the original Latin publication, the paper was translated into several languages. Oersted himself realized the importance of an English translation as attested to by the note at the beginning of this paper: "Translated from a printed account drawn up in Latin by the author, and transmitted by him to the Editor of the Annals of Philosophy." "...[Oersted] had predicted the existence of the electro-magnetic effect as early as 1812 ... He set out to deduce from the nature of electricity the conditions under which it was converted to magnetism, and to prove their existence by experiment ... In the winter of 1819-1820, he placed a magnetic needle parallel to a current carrying wire and saw the needle was disturbed. Resuming the experiments the summer of 1820, Oersted ascertained that a circular magnetic field surrounded current carrying wire, and that a magnetic needle brought into this field would set itself tangent to the circle. Oersted's discovery opened up a new epoch in the history of physics..." (Norman 1606). Octavo. Francesco Petrarca
Livorno, Italy: Dai Torchi Di Glauco Masi. Condition: Very Good +. Lovely 1820 edition of one of the first great modern collections of love poetry, written by the Renaissance poet viewed as the "first true reviver of learning in Medieval Europe" (Encyclopedia Britannica). The story of Petrarch's love for Laura is well-known but the spirituality and complexity of this love and the cataclysmic loss he felt at her death can be understood only by reading this cycle of his poems. Bound in a modern 1/4 red morocco over marbled boards (with matching marbled endpapers). 5 raised bands, gilt-rule and gilt-devices within the compartments. A solidly VG+ copy, with very light staining confined to the upper inner margins of the first third of Vol. I. This edition is very handsomely printed as well. Masi, the printer, boats on the title page that it is printed with types supplied by Fermin Didot, the great Parisian printer. Each volume has a lithographed frontispiece portrait accomplished on the stone by F. Wagner. The portrait of Petrarch introduces Vol. I and the portrait of Laura Vol. II. Thick octavo, Vol. I consists of 362 pgs., Vol. II 242 pgs.

Taylor, Joseph; William Carmichael Smyth, editor
London printed for the Editor, by W. Bulmer and W. Nicol, 1820. Small 4to, 25 x 16 cm; pp.[iv], viii, 865, [1, blank], [2]. Modern morocco-backed cloth boards; final leaves with a tiny amount of marginal worming, text unaffected. First English edition of Taylor's dictionary, abridged for the benefit of British students of Urdu, particularly cadets at the East India Company's colleges at Haileybury and Addiscombe. Smyth halved the length as well as the price of Taylor's original dictionary and employed only naskh characters, recognizing the demand in the market for an Urdu dictionary, as Shakespear's 1817 dictionary was by then all but unobtainable, and the Company's Court of Directors, noting that Shakepear's first edition was but Taylor's dictionary of 1808 lightly revised, had yet to authorize funds for a second edition. Smyth's dismissive approach to Shakespear's admitted reproduction of Taylor's dictionary earned Smyth several scathing contemporary reviews, particularly as his own edition of Taylor made little contribution to the original text beyond reducing its length. The preface notes that while students of Urdu in India did not want for the necessary books, those in England had much more limited access to such material. William Carmichael Smyth attended Haileybury College as a cadet of the East India Company around 1802, and later served in Bengal. By the 1830s he had retired to England, and appears in public records in connection with disputes around his pension. He died in 1861. We trace no copies at auction. [Attributes: First Edition]

Samuel Prout
1820. Samuel Prout (17 September 1783 10 February 1852) was one of the masters of British watercolour architectural painting. Prout secured the position of Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to King George IV in 1829 and afterwards to Queen Victoria. John Ruskin, whose work often emulated Prout's, wrote in 1844, "Sometimes I tire of Turner, but never of Prout". Prout is often compared to his contemporaries; Turner, Gainsborough, Constable and Ruskin, whom he taught. View in Ghent is an original unframed watercolour. The scene has market traders to the left of the Hotel de Ville. 38cm x 29cm on buff wove paper unframed. There are paint testing marks verso together with the artist's graphite signature. Prout's lithographic reproduction of this watercolour of @ 1820 appears in "Sketches by Samuel Prout, in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Switzerland"edited by Charles Holme and text by Ernest G Halton. The belfry and the Hotel de Ville feature in the graphite drawing from the Lansdowne Collection 'Hotel de Ville Ghent'.
