SMITH, William
C. Cruchley, map seller & publisher, 81 Fleet Street., [1820, but issued after 1844]. The first geological map of Essex Engraved map, fine original hand-colour, dissected and mounted on linen, Cary's imprint pasted over with Cruchley's, folding into original blue cloth covers with publisher's label. This geological map of Essex was made by William Smith as part of his series of county maps, each separately issued, which were the first detailed geological maps of specific areas. These individual maps are extremely rare on the market. In 1815, Smith had produced the first geological map of England and Wales, which contained "an amazing amount of correct detail" (DSB) and was the basis for all the geological maps that followed. In 1819 he began the publication of a geological atlas of England and Wales. Published in parts over five years, it remained unfinished, and contains 21 maps of various English counties. The map of Essex appeared in the third part (1820), and was also issued separately, as here. His county maps are based on those of John Cary, with geological data added from Smith's own surveys. They are headed 'By W. Smith, Mineral Surveyor.' and the title above appears in the upper margin; another title is given in a circular tablet in the lower left corner: "A New Map of Essex, divided into hundreds, exhibiting Its Roads, Rivers, Parks &c. By John Cary, Engraver." Smith's survey of Essex reveals the county's vast stores of clay, interspersed with chalk deposits. Some additional details are noted beside individual keys, for example, he describes the sedimentary layers … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Lido nas Cortes Geraes, E Extraordinarias, Congregadas em Cadis em 1811, Nas Sessoes em Que a Commissao da Constituicao Apresentou o Projecto Desta. Traduzido do Hespanhol por R.F.C. Influential in Spain and Portugal, this essay on the Spanish constitution of 1812 was also a profound influence in Latin America. It was first delivered in 1811 before the Cortes that brought constitutional monarchy to Spain. This translation was prepared on the occasion of the revolution at Porto on August 24, 1820 that overthrew the regency and paved the way for the parliamentary deliberations that resulted in the Portuguese constitution of 1822. It also helped to inspire the Latin American independence movements of the 1820s. The identity of "R.F.C." is unknown. Arguelles was a Spanish statesman and diplomat. Starke, Mariana
London: John Murray, 1820. First edition. Hardcover. g to vg. Octavo. xi, 545, (1) 300pp. Bound in contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled bards, rebacked with original gilt lettered spine laid down; raised bands. Marbled edges. . Mariana Starke was an Englih author who made a name for herself with her ground-breaking travel guides. When she was asked to publish a fourth edition of her "Letters from Italy" Starke decided to revisit the continent and create this new work. Starke spent two years from May 1817 to June 1819 and wrote about the changes and vast improvements on the continent from the spot, producing this extensive guide to Europe for travelers, based on her own experience revisiting the continent after the peace of 1814 that concluded the Napoleonic Wars. An advertisement at front spells out a stark warning to travelers due to "disbanded soldiers, converted into banditti, infesting the post-roads of the south of France, the Alps, Apennine, and countries bordering on those mountains; especially the confines of the Roman and Neapolitan territories situated between Terracina and Mola-di-gaeta..."Starke's guides are considered groundbreaking for the genre, including, next to the common architectural and scenic descriptions, advice on luggage, obtaining passports, the cost of food and accommodations, hence the extensive appendix, and advised a system of exclamation mark ratings !!!, a forerunner of today's stars. Contains 300 pages with extensive appendix, alphabetical list of towns, rivers, gulfs, islands, etc. and index at rear.Binding with light wear along … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Winter Evening Tales, Collected Among the Cottagers in the South of Scotland James Hogg 1820 Oliver and Boyd : Edinburgh 7" by 4" [5], 2-340; [5], 2- 335, [1pp] SUMMARY The first edition of James Hogg's collection of atmospheric short stories, evoking a winter evening around a fire in a cottage in Scotland. First Edition,Leather Binding Overall Condition: Good This book weighs 0.75 KG when packed UK Postage: £ 3.99 US Postage: £ 19.99 EU Postage: £ 15.99 European Postage: £ 16.99 Asia Postage: £ 21.99 Worldwide Postage: £ 25.99 DESCRIPTION The first edition of this work. Complete in two volumes. 'Winter Evening Tales' is a collection of short stories, all of which are set in the south of Scotland. They are rural and traditional tales, as intended by the author to be the kind of stories that would be told in a cottage sitting around the fire during a dark evening in the Scottish winter. The stories in this work include 'The Renowned Adventures of Basil Lee', 'A Peasant's Funeral', 'Story of Two Highlanders', 'The Bridal of Polmood', 'The Shepherd's Calendar', and more. This work was well received when it was published. James Hogg was a Scottish writer, who worked as a shepherd and farmhand in this youth, being mostly self-taught through reading. Whilst he became a successful writer, he continued working as a farmer. He was also a good friend of Walter Scott, and wrote an unauthorised biography on his fellow Scottish poet. ACKERMANN, Rudolph, publ.) GERNING, Johann Isaac von.
London: R. Ackermann, 1820. London: R. Ackermann,, 1820. Quarto (343 x 280 mm). Finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in dark green half morocco, green buckram boards, raised bands, titles to spine gilt, compartments and boards ruled in single gilt fillets, top edge gilt, pale green endpapers. With 24 hand-coloured aquatints and one large folding map with colour highlights. Includes the list of subscribers. Spine slightly sunned, boards a touch scuffed and rubbed, minor offsetting from plates, occasional light spotting, a couple of creases to the Bornhofen plate and a small repair to the margin on the Biebrich plate. Overall a very good copy. First illustrated edition, with plates watermarked 1816-20. By 1820, Rudolph Ackermann (1764–1834) had established himself as one of the premium publishers of colour plate books in Britain, largely thanks to a number of works on English topography starting with The Microcosm of London in 1808. A Picturesque Tour Along the Rhine was the first title in Ackermann's "Picturesque Tour" series and was issued in six monthly parts. While Gerning's text was originally published in German in 1819, the introduction makes it clear that Ackermann was already working on his illustrated edition. Abbey suggests that "that the text was commissioned by Ackermann, as were the views for the plates". Abbey Travel 217; Tooley 234.

Decorated "Dutch gilt" paper.
[Germany, late c18 or early c19]. Broadside scene 11 1/2 x 14 on a 14 x 16 1/2 blue paste ground. There are three horizontal panels with 2 scenes in each. The story begins with troubadours (who may be singing this tale) under a tree, a fortress-like castle on a hill, and a distressed damsel appealing to clergy in a church cell. There follows severall dramatic clashes between knights. The story ends in a garlanded bower with the union of the knight and his lady. The gold is in very good condition. A bright example of this rare paper. These beautiful papers, in imitation of brocade, were created in Germany and Italy, throughout the 18th century until about 1820. The papers were printed either by wood blocks or by engraved metal rollers, which covered the paper with sizing or paste. Gold was dusted onto the size; and, when the size dried, superfluous gold was brushed off. For raised gold, the size was thickened with yellow ochre or red lead.

One of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the County of Warwick, To the Magistrates of Warwickshire. London: Published by T. & G. Underwood and Beilly and Knott, Birmingham, 1820. [iv], 23 pp. With a half-title. Recent staff marbled wrappers, printed paper title label to front cover. Moderate toning to text, some edgewear to title page. A very good copy of a rare pamphlet. * Only edition. A paper on the increase in crime in Warwickshire, relative to the size of population, its causes and possible remedies. The author suggests that young offenders must be punished as much as older offenders. The paper was in response to Eardley-Wilmot's A Letter to the Magistrates of England on the Increase of Crime: And an Efficient Remedy Suggested for Their Consideration, first published in 1820, which suggesting that severe punishment of juvenile offenders often led them to a lifetime of criminal activity. He also argued for better prison conditions as an aid to rehabilitation of offenders, a claim refuted in Observations. Complete in two volumes. 'Winter Evening Tales' is a collection of short stories, all of which are set in the south of Scotland. [POLIDORI (John William)]
Litt. I.580 & II. 149 et le cat. BNF. ¶ 1 seul ex. au cat. CCFR (BNF) - et 1 autre ex. au cat. KVK (BN Israel).

Prijs: Euro2.950,- (incl. lijst, incl. 21% BTW)

[CHINA - WATERCOLOURS].
Thirteen detailed Chinese watercolours of birds, fruits, flowers, plants and fishes, together with four portraits of Chinese people posing with a pipe, lute, flower and a handheld fan. The drawings in this album show the mixture of the Chinese and European styles that was popular in the market for export paintings in the first half of the 19th century: a combination of the Chinese approach to rendering with European aesthetics concerning light, shadow and realism. As traditional in these paintings, large areas of flat colour have been subtly shaded with very thin lines to draw the veins of the leaves, fins of the fish and feathers of the birds. The production of these export paintings began earnestly in the 1820s and reached its height in the 1830s and 1840s, especially after China's defeat in the First Opium War (1839-1842) opened the country to foreign trade. Photography was introduced in China in the 1840s and the market for export paintings declined after 1860.By the end of the 18th century Chinese painters in Hong Kong and Canton started producing paintings and drawings for European buyers. Although they were made for artistic and decorative purposes, many European naturalists began collecting drawings to study Chinese plants and species. Most of the plants and animals would simply not survive the journey to Europe whereas dried specimens did not preserve the colour or shape of the flower. Most of the export paintings were ensembles of flowers and animals placed on a background. Imagination was more important than copying nature, and the realistically painted flowers c …

- Ungedruckt. - Sehr selten.

Anon. - PA GERMAN DEVOTIONAL BROADSIDE
Lancaster, PA: H W Villee, 1820 - 1830. Unknown.. As issued.. Good; paper toned; folded at one time; two marginal tears into the printed border (no loss); two small punctures filled at some past date; tape residue on verso.. Broadside, original stencil and hand-coloring, measuring appx. 330 x 413 mm. The earliest of 6 versions that are located in the scant institutional holdings (see German Language Broadsides in North America) exhibiting the best color scheme for the print. One of the most elaborate of the PA German devotional prints. The coloring - utilizing 5 different colors - is unusual within a genre known for its spare decorative elaboration. The theme is well known. It is based on the Gospel of Matthew: "Because strait is the gate and narrow is the way, which leadth to life, and few there be that find it" (Matt. 7, 13 - 14). The fearsome pit of fire, populated with demons, is well rendered in the lower right portion of the print - prominent before the observer. Despite its blemishes a well preserved copy with excellent coloring. See Yoder, Pennsylvania German Broadside, pp. 188 - 190; Wellenreuther, Citizens in a Strange Land.
