        Picturesque Tour Along the Rhine

1820. First Edition . (ACKERMANN, Rudolph) GERNING, Baron Johann Isaac von. A Picturesque Tour Along the Rhine, from Mentz to Cologne. London: R. Ackermann, 1820. Folio (11-1/2 by 13-1/2 inches), 20th-century full tan polished calf, raised bands, red morocco spine label. $11,000.First edition, first issue, of one of Ackermann’s wonderful Picturesque Tours, beautifully illustrated with 24 hand-colored folio aquatints and large folding map. A lovely copy.In the history of book production ""there is no more attractive figure than that of Rudolph Ackermann, through whose extraordinary enterprise and spirit of adventure, aquatint was successfully applied to the illustration of books"" (Prideaux, 120-23). One of Ackermann's most lucrative projects was his remarkable Picturesque Tours, a series of seven books produced between 1820-28. This is his Tour Along the Rhine, with beautifully hand-colored aquatints by Daniel Havell and Thomas Sutherland after paintings by Christian Georg Schutz, depicting views of Mentz, the Castle of Furstenberg, the Church of Johannes, Pfalz Castle and the town of Kaub, the salmon fishery at Lurley, Coblentz, Bornhofen, Cologne and other sites along the river. The plates were pulled and hand-colored in the Ackermann studio, whose reputation for producing splendid illustrated publications and disseminating fine aquatint prints spanned over two centuries. The folding map shows the course of the Rhine from Mentz to Cologne. With accompanying text by Baron von Gerning describing the history and culture of the area (first published in German in 1819, without illustrations). First issue, without plate numbers in the top right corners. Tooley notes that plates 2 and 3 have variants dated either September or October; Abbey argues persuasively that to call either state an issue ""must remain doubtful,"" particularly given that large-paper copies have also been seen with the two plates dated October. At any rate, the quality of plates in either state are the same high standard; Abbey notes that ""there are definitely some later issues of the book, and these can be recognized by having plate numbers at the top right-hand corner. The impressions in these plates are poor and the coloring less good"" (Abbey 217). This copy has plates 2 and 3 dated October, but most importantly none of the plates bear numbers in the upper right. Text watermarked 1817 and 1818; plates watermarked 1818 and 1819. Abbey, Travel 217. Prideaux, 337. Tooley 234. Title page neatly rehinged, plates fine and fresh, hand-coloring vivid; a few minor scuffs to binding. An excellent, attractive copy of this beautifully illustrated work.

VEDUTE DI ROMA [binder's (spine) title]

Unknown place: Agapito Franzetti, 1820. 130 engravings on 65 sheets. Each sheet (page) meausures 113mm x 140mm. No title page (if issued). No date of publication is listed, circa 1820. Original 3/4 leather binding with moderate shelfwear, spine worn with minor loss to extremities, but intact and attractive. Mottled decorative paper sheets cover the boards, and the pastedowns are marbled. Many of the plates are loose, and several pages are lightly to moderately stained. The engravings are strong and clean impressions, showing views of buildings of ancient and modern construction. Most of the engravings are signed in the plate either "A. Franzetti" or "A. F." Many of the plates are titled and show similar views to many by Piranesi, though they are not identical. If this is a pocket version of Piranesi's "Vedute de Roma" it is either lacking 5 images, or it was issued with 130 images instead of 135. Bibliographic information on this publication is elusive. Included is a circa 1950 French protective slipcase, decorated with marbled paper. From the library of Paul Mac Alister. Plates include Basilica de S. Pietro in Vaticano, Monte Cavallo, Piazza del Popolo, Basilica di S. Sebastiano fuori le mura, Basilica di S. Lorenzo fuori le mura, Porto di Ripagrande, Ponte Molle, Chiesa de S.         Verzeichniss der Gemälde-Sammlung von Dr. Friedrich Gotthelf Baumgärtner.

Leipzig, ohne Druck- oder Verlagsadresse, (1820). - 4to (26 : 21 cm). VIII, 100 S., 26 Kupfertafeln in Umrißmanier.

Cf. Laffont Bompiani, II, p. 347. Cf. Anna Maria Rubino, Alla ricerca di Astolphe de Custine, p. 116. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Journals of Two Expeditions into the Interior of New South Wales, Undertaken by Order of the British Government in the Years 1817-18

London: John Murray 1820 - London: John Murray, 1820. First Edition. Quarto - 27.8cm., [xv], (1 - Errata), 408pp. including Appendix, Index. with three folding engraved and publisher’s linen backed maps or charts, two folding tables, a folding engraved plate and five aquatints, two with original hand-colouring; a most attractive copy bound in modern gilt ruled polished 3/4 calf and linen boards, spine with full gilt-decoration and marbled end leaves, top page edges gilt. Some light intermittent foxing as usual, otherwise a Fine and most desirable copy. Scarce. A very important Australian book, being the only inland exploration work published in quarto, and reputedly only 500 copies produced. John Oxley held a significant place in the early history of the Colony contributing to the exploration of the New England districts of New South Wales, as well as the discovery of the Brisbane River. Oxley’s first journey was made beyond the Blue Mountains, up and around the Lachlan River. Vast swamps compelled him to return when less than two days’ journey from the Murrumbidgee River. In his second journey, made the following year, Oxley led a party down the Marquarie River. He found the land very swampy, the party took a detour and discovered the Castlereagh River. The party then struck N.E. and East across the Warrumbungle Ranges and the Liverpool Plains, crossed the Dividing Range and reached the coast at Port Macquarie. The finely-drawn maps and aquatints include views drawn by Major James Taylor from sketches by Evans, second in command and the deputy surveyor, and the striking portrait "A Native Chief of Bathurst", prepared after a drawing by John Lewin, and one of very few known Aboriginal subjects by Australia's first professional artist. WITH: Loosely inserted are 2 original hand-written letters fully signed “J. Oxley” to his wife Emma, written at Sydney Town to Kirkham, Oxley’s farm at the Cowpastures, dated 26 February (1824). The second letter is not dated but of a similar period. The letters are interesting and refer to W. Marsden and Mr. Cordeaux (Governor Macquarie’s land commissioner). Oxley had married Emma Norton in 1821 at St. Phillip’s Church, but died in 1828 aged only 42. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Brockhaus: Allgemeine deutsche Real-Encyclopädie für die gebildeten Stände (Conversations-Lexicon). In zehn (10) Bänden. Fünfte Original-Auflage (5. Auflage), 10 Bände, Halbleder-Ausgabe (1820).

Leipzig, F. A. Brockhaus, 1820 Völlig umgearbeitete Auflage in 10 Bänden im Umfang von ca. 10.000 Seiten. Vollständiges Grundwerk in 10 Bänden. An Exact Representation of the Coronation . at Westminster' and of 'The Coronation Dinner in Westminster Hall', (1738-1820, King of Great Britain) and his Queen CHARLOTTE (1744-1818, née Princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz)]

1820 - 2 hand-coloured woodcuts, copied from the illustrations in The Universal Magazine for October and November 1761, the first, taken as the Archbishop of Canterbury places the Crown on the King's head, is lettered with explanations of the crowded scene, including at (h) 'The Dukes of Normandie and Acquitain and other great officers', the second, similarly explained, shows the King's Champion, flanked by the Earl Marshal and Lord High Constable, riding up the centre between the long tables, watched by the diners and the others present in the galleries, printed within a 'Greek Key' border, both referring to 22nd September 1761, laid down on two separate album leaves 10" x 7¾", with other items on the versos, the two prints no date, circa edges worn and border trimmed in places without loss to text or image The original articles of 1761 explain the role at the Dinner of the King's Champion, who challenged any one to assert that George III was not their lawful sovereign, and the 'Dukes of Normandy and Aquitaine' at the Coronation. The French King had anciently a council of twelve great Peers, 6 lay and 6 ecclesiastic. Long after the council ceased to function the ecclesiastics attended at Reims, but the lay peerages had became vested in the crown. So the King appointed people to represent his lay peerages. Henry II liked this idea, which was last used in 1761, given that in 1801 Great Britain renounced all claims to France and the use of the lilies on her coat of arms. On the versos are (1) a pleasing engraving of Bouverie Hall, Chart next Sutton Valence, Kent, and (2) a number of cuttings including temperance verses and the monument to Captain Charles Colby, of the 98th Dragoons, killed by a tiger at 'Rawal Pinde', 27th March 1852.         Suite du mémoire sur les intégrales définies.

Paris: l'Imprimerie Royal, 1820. An important contribution to the foundation of complex function theory. In this paper Possion was the first to carry out integration along a path in the complex plane. "Poisson noted in 1815 and discussed in [this paper] the use of integrals of complex functions taken over paths in the complex plane. As an example he gives ?dx/x from -1 to 1. Here he sets x=ei?, where ? runs from (2n+1)? to 0, and obtaines, by treating the integral as a limit of a sum, the value -(2n+1)?i. Then he notes that the value of an integral need not be the same when taken over an imaginary path as when over a real path. He gives the example ?(cos ax)/(b2+ x2) dx from -? to ?, where a and b are positive constants. He lets x = t ik, where k is constant and positive, and obtaines the value & Five memoires in: Journal de l'École Royale Polytechnique, vol. 11. pp. 1-188; 295-341; 342-410; 411-416; 417-489.         Histoire Naturelle générale et particulière des Mollusques Terrestres et Fluviatiles ...

Paris, J.B. Baillière, 1820-1851. 4 volumes. Folio. With 247 engraved plates, almost all printed in colours and finished by hand. Recent red half morocco, spines with 4 raised bands, gilt ornaments and lettering. Large Paper copy of one of the rarest and most beautiful conchological works. Some moderate foxing to text as well as plates. "Posterity is grateful to Férussac for some of the most beautiful and accurate coloured figures of non-marine molluscs ever published" (Dance p. 91). It is also the last and one of the finest examples of French colour-printing by Langlois, the printer responsible for some of Redouté's finest work./The work had a long and complicated publishing history with the result that few copies are found complete. The first 28 parts, by Férussac, appeared between 1820 and 1832, containing 162 plates and 128 pages of text. In 1838 another six instalments were issued by Deshayes. The death of the publisher and departure of Deshayes to Algeria again brought the work to a halt. In 1848 Baillière acquired the stock and plates and convinced Deshayes that a work of such beauty and scientific importance could not remain unfinished. Eight more instalments were published. Deshayes is responsible for the greatest part of the text and 85 plates./The colour-printing and handcolouring were executed under supervision of Langlois and after his death by his pupil and successor, Geny-Gros, the plates were drawn by the finest natural history artists in France at the time: Bessa, Huet, Prêtre, and Riocreux. Baillière in his "Avertissement de l'éditeur' tells how as a consequence of the 1848 Revolution the most outstanding natural history artists could not find employment, apart from his work.//B.M.(N.H.)         Système analytique des connaissances positives de l'homme: restreintes à celles qui proviennent directement ou indirectement de l'observation.

Paris: L'auteur & A. Belin, February 1820. First edition, very rare, of Lamarck's last book, important for containing his final thoughts on evolution. In this work Lamarck renounces the linear progression theory of species change propounded in his Philosophie Zoologique (1809) in favour of a branching tree theory much closer to that associated with Darwin some four decades later. "Unwilling to endorse the idea that fossils represented species that had all become extinct as the result of a global catastrophe, he concluded that the forms had changed over time. Having once concluded that species are mutable, he then called upon the familiar idea of the inheritance of acquired characters to explain the close relation between habits and forms that, especially in the case of birds, had been a staple of naturalists' commentaries for decades ... He invoked what he called the "power of life" or "the cause which tends to make organization increasingly complex" to account for the general, linear series that in his view best represented how the different animal classes were related to each other ... [Stephen Jay] Gould describes how Lamarck's decision to make separate classes of the annelid and parasitic worms led him over time to give up his original commitment to a linear arrangement of the different animal classes and to adopt a truly branching scheme instead. Gould indicates that in the very last of his publications [the offered work] Lamarck reversed his decades-long belief that the "power of life" was greater than the influence of environmental circumstances, admitting to the contrary that the force of circumstances was ultimately stronger than nature herself ... Giving up his linear arrangement of living things for a strongly branching view of life's development, and acknowledging that the influence of the environment had had a greater role in evolution than the "cause which makes organization increasingly complex," Lamarck showed his willingness to let the evidence of natural history be the final arbiter in determining the complex path nature had traced, over time, in bringing all the different forms of life into existence" (Burkhardt in DSB). KVK lists only nine copies (three each in France, Germany and UK). "Following his last and greatest treatise on the anatomy of invertebrate organisms, Lamarck published only one other major work

[Souimanga de Kuhl, mâle & femelle & Souimanga à ventre écarlate, mâle (= plate 376/388 from Temminck's Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux ... )]. [France], 1825. Watercolour of 3 birds on unwatermarked wove paper (ca. 48 x 35 cm), all standing on a branch, the upper branch signed: "JG Prêtre 1825". With the birds numbered in pencil, the plate number and bird names in pencil in the lower left corner, and the upper bird encircled and with added correct plate number.

For the published work see: Anker 502; Balis, Van diverse pluimage 75; Nissen, IVB 932; Zimmer, pp. 626-628. Original watercolour of a male and female White-flanked Sunbird (Aethopyga eximia) and a male Splendid Sunbird (Cinnyris coccinigastrus) by the prolific zoological artist Jean Gabriel Prêtre, produced for Temminck's Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux... (Paris, 1820-1839). On the final published plate 376, the Splendid Sunbird was changed with a Purple-throated Sunbird and the Splendid Sunbird appeared on plate 388. Sunbirds make up a family of very small passerine birds. The White-flanked Sunbird is found in Indonesia and the Splendid Sunbird in West and central Africa. Temminck's lavishly illustrated Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux... issued in 102 parts between 1820-1839, was published as a kind of continuation to Buffon's Histoire naturelle des oiseaux (1770-1786). In total it contains ca. 600 engraved plates with about 800 figures of birds by Nicolas Huet and Prêtre, and it's considered "the most monumental work of the post-Napoleonic period" (Balis).Paper slightly browned, a few minor spots and some working notes in pencil. A beautiful watercolour of three sunbirds.

Magnalia Christi Americana: or, the Ecclesiastical History of New-England from Its First Planting in the Year 1620, Unto the Year of Our Lord, 1689

Silas Andrus, 1820. Two volumes, complete. 573 pp.; 595 pp Quarto later full brown calf, burgundy gilt lettered spine labels Cotton Mather, FRS (February 12, 1663 - February 13, 1728; A.B. 1678, Harvard College; A.M. 1681, honorary doctorate 1710, University of Glasgow) was a socially and politically influential New England Puritan minister, prolific author, and pamphleteer. Known for his vigorous support for the Salem witch trials, he also left a scientific legacy due to his hybridization experiments and his promotion of inoculation for disease prevention. He was subsequently denied the Presidency of Harvard College which his father, Increase, had held. Mather wrote more than 450 books and pamphlets, and his ubiquitous literary works made him one of the most influential religious leaders in America. Mather set the moral tone in the colonies, and sounded the call for second- and third-generation Puritans, whose parents had left England for the New England colonies of North America, to return to the theological roots of Puritanism. The most important of these, Magnalia Christi Americana (1702), comprises seven distinct books, many of which depict biographical and historical narratives. From his religious training, Mather viewed the importance of texts for elaborating meaning and for bridging different moments of history--linking, for instance, the Biblical stories of Noah and Abraham with the arrival of such eminent leaders as John Eliot, John Winthrop, and his own father, Increase. Highly influential, Mather was a force to be reckoned with in secular, as well as in spiritual, matters. After the fall of James II of England, in 1688, Mather was among the leaders of the successful revolt against James' governor of the consolidated Dominion of New England, Sir Edmund Andros. Mather was not known for writing in a neutral, unbiased perspective. Many, if not all, of his writings had bits and pieces of his own personal life in them or were written for personal reasons. In 1689, Mather published Memorable Providences, detailing the supposed afflictions of several children in the Goodwin family in Boston. Catholic washerwoman Goody Glover was convicted of witchcraft and executed in this case. Robert Calef, a contemporary critic of Mather, considered this book responsible for laying the groundwork for the Salem witch trials three years later: Mr Cotton Mather, was the most active and forward of any Minister in the Country in those matters, taking home one of the Children, and managing such Intreagues with that Child, and after printing such an account of the whole, in his Memorable Providences, as conduced much to the kindling of those Flames, that in Sir Williams time threatened the devouring of this Country. Nineteenth-century historian Charles Wentworth Upham shared the view that the afflicted in Salem were imitating the Goodwin children, but put the blame on both Cotton and his father, Increase Mather: They are answerable... more than almost any other men have been, for the opinions of their time. It was, indeed a superstitious age; but made much more so by their operations, influence, and writings, beginning with Increase Mather's movement, at the assembly of Ministers, in 1681, and ending with Cotton Mather's dealings with the Goodwin children, and the account thereof which he printed and circulated far and wide. For this reason, then in the first place, I hold those two men responsible for what is called 'Salem Witchcraft.' -wikipedia Some rubbing and scuffing of covers, browning and some foxing throughout, top of title page excised, albeit a nice copy The books were owned by Rev. Herman Landon Vail (1790-1870), each volume signed by him [Sabin 46393. Howes M391 "Most famous 18th century American book."]
