Binding tight; boards clean; plates with moderate foxing; aquatints fresh; fold-out edges lightly ragged not affecting image; see additional images provided. Quoting Borba 544: "Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied travelled through Brazil from 1815 to 1817, accompanied by the naturalists Georg Freyreiss and Friedrich Sellow. From Rio they journeyed to Cabo Frio, along the coast of Ilheus, and from there they sailed up the Jequitinhonha to the borders of Minas Geraes, finally reaching Bahia. From a scientific point of view this expedition was one of the most profitable of the nineteenth century. The enormous zoological collections which were assembled are today in the American Museum of Natural History of New York, acquired by them in 1870. When the work first appeared copies were sold for one thousand francs, an extravagant sum at that time. This English translation is of only the first volume of the [2 vol.] original edition. Quoting the text, p. 91: "There are several houses scattered about in this place, the inhabitants of which are very fond of music and dancing; one played the (violas) guittar, and the young people danced the Baduca, in which the body undergoes various contorsions, beating the time with their hands, and snapping two fingers of each hand alternately, in the manner of the Spanish castanets. Although the taste for dancing and music is general throughout these parts, yet they evince no disposition for the pleasures of the table, at least in most places. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Afm. 19,5 x 29,5 cm.In deze charmante tekening zien we wijnboeren in een heuvelig landschap bij de oogst. De tijd is rijp, we zien een wijngaard in een zomers namiddaglicht. Druiven worden geplukt, een met paard bespannen wagen wordt geladen, een met druivenbladeren omhulde fluitspeler maakt muziek en er wordt gedanst. De zon heeft zich bijna achter de heuvels tussen de bomen verscholen en werpt een zachte gloed over de wijnranken. Er hangt een geur van zoete bloesem en heerlijke kruiden. Krekels krieken en lijsters zingen. In de verte hoor je het blaten van de schaapskudde die terug wordt gebracht naar de veilige schaapskooi.En dan aan het einde van deze zwoele zomerdag met een heerlijke koele bries door het haar genieten van een mooi glas...Prijs: ?1.250,- (incl. lijst).

Moderate toning to text, some edgewear to title page. A very good copy of a rare pamphlet. $500. * Only edition. A paper on the increase in crime in Warwickshire, relative to the size of population, its causes and possible remedies. The author suggests that young offenders must be punished as much as older offenders. The paper was in response to Eardley-Wilmot's A Letter to the Magistrates of England on the Increase of Crime: And an Efficient Remedy Suggested for Their Consideration, first published in 1820, which suggesting that severe punishment of juvenile offenders often led them to a lifetime of criminal activity. He also argued for better prison conditions as an aid to rehabilitation of offenders, a claim refuted in Observations. Original full diced polished calf with four raised bands, gilt titles to spine, gilt foliate decoration to compartments, Greek key border to boards. Marbled edges and endpapers. Edges a little rubbed with very minor loss to gilding. Two bookplates to front pastedown, one the armorial Garter plate of Prince Henry Of Gloucester; ownership inscription to first blank of S G Dunlop. Scattered minor foxing otherwise a clean copy in Near Fine condition. Companion volume to Fables of Aesop, produced by Emerson Charnley from blocks he purchased from Thomas Wilson of York with no input from the engraver. "Mr Bewick has no concern or interest whatever in the work submitted by the public" and though he accepted a copy for his own library, the work was far from satisfactory to Bewick himself. This is a particularly handsome example of the work, with the added provenance of being from the library of Prince Henry of Gloucester. Prince Henry (1900-1974) was the third son of King George V and Queen Mary, and the younger brother of Kings Edward VIII and George VI. Tattersfield, pp 622-5.

Lasteyrie (1759-1849), agronomist, industrialist, and philanthropist, was much involved in modernizing the agricultural techniques practiced in France. He had taken an interest in lithography almost from the beginning and was, in large part, responsible for making Paris the lithographic center of the world. He established his first lithographic press in Paris in 1815 and did much commercial work for the government, printing of caricatures, vanity projects for the "high society" of the city, and, above all, the drawings of artists and amateurs. The book was conceived as a series of tracts rather than a comprehensive and systematic treatise, though Malthus published it to establish his own position against that of Ricardo, with whom he had been having an ongoing debate about the nature of labour, demand and profit. "In his 'Principles of Political Economy', Malthus was proposing investment in public work and private luxury as a means of increasing effective demand, and hence as a palliative to economic distress. The nation, he thought, must balance the power to produce and the will to consume" (DSB). "The Principles had only a limited impact at the time, and was severely criticized by J. R. McCulloch and Ricardo; the latter prepared extensive critical notes. But more recently it has received greater recognition, largely as a result of the comments by J. M. Keynes in the 1930s. Keynes argued that Malthus's theory of effective demand provided a scientific explanation of unemployment, and that the hundred-year domination of Ricardo over Malthus had been a disaster for the progress of economics. Keynes believed that if economics had followed Malthus instead of being constrained by Ricardo in an artificial groove, the world would be a much wiser and richer place" (ODNB). Pour la Carte topographique militaire des Alpes en douze feuilles publiée en 1820, il utilise la projection du Dépôt de la Guerre, (ou Flamsteed modifiée), une échelle au 1/200.000e, et un système de hachures avec éclairement oblique selon les préconisations de la Commission de 1802. La clarté du résultat lui vaudra de servir de référence pendant une partie du XIXe siècle. Le dessin des montagnes reprend celui de Bacler d?Albe (avec corrections). Il faut souligner la richesse en cols et en passages dans toutes les régions alpestres. ?La carte des Alpes de Raymond constitua pour la cartographie alpine du XIXe siécle une oeuvre importante puisque le levé topographique est fondé sur la triangulation et que les topographes sardes la considèrent comme une référence.       Roma 1820 - Rara e deliziosa veduta di piazza del Popolo, sapientemente delineata da Antonio Acquaroni, dalla parte di porta Flaminia, che abbraccia il panorama dalla nota terrazza del Pincio a via di Ripetta. La rappresentazione è dinamica, sono raffigurati diversi tipi di carrozze, ben distribuite nello spazio semicircolare; a destra, una vivace scene di folklore di balli a suon di tamburelli. Tra gli attenti spettatori adunati, anche due guardie in uniforme, rappresentati di spalle in atteggiamento di riposo. Lo spettacolo richiama l'attenzione di una delle due guardie a cavallo, rivolto di profilo verso il gruppo, mentre un venditore ambulante vende qualcosa ad uomo con una bambina. Nel resto della piazza, diverse persone passeggiano coi loro eleganti abiti, sullo sfondo di distinguono anche due chierici e, più indietro, un uomo tira faticosmente il suo asino. The former grand duchy was created in 1806 from parts of various territories (including the Palatinate) , where until then the Jews had formed no united community or shared a common history… After the grand duchy of Baden was created, the position of its Schutzjuden (‘protected Jews') improved. Die Karten und der Schuber sind spätestens um 1820 zu datieren, obwohl Abel erst 1839 Teilhaber der Firma Klinger wurde und die Firmierung C. Abel-Klinger erst ab 1850 bestand. Möglicherweise handelt es sich um einen älteren Bestand der 1785 gegründeten Firma Klinger, der nach dem Zusammenschluss zu Abel-Klinger neu aufgelegt wurde. Die Spielkarten zeigen reizende biedermeierliche Szenen zu 16 Tugenden bzw. Untugenden (Verschwendung, Zufriedenheit, Arbeitsamkeit, Friedlichkeit, Liebe, Neugierde, Wohltätigkeit, Zanksucht, Geiz, Ehrlichkeit usw.) und eine Krone, jeweils mit deutsche und französischer Bezeichnung im Unterrand. - Karten etwas berieben und angeschmutzt, Schuber oben gering, an der Vorderseite ca. 3 cm eingerissen. Rückseite des Schubers durchbrochen zum besseren Herausschieben der Karten, dort zusätzlich etwas ausgebrochen.

She was maybe the daughter, or sister it is not clear, of Camillo de Vito, a reknown painter of guaches depicting views and scenes from everyday life. She worked in Naples at the beginning of the XIX century; sometimes she is mistaken with Michele de Vito. "A refined painter, very skilled when it came to drawings, she had the characteristic to make her subejct more gentle, compared to her male collegues"; this is how De Rosa and Trastulli describe this artist. At first he supported Rosas, but later turned against him; he died in exile in Montevideo where his Memoirs were published after his death, in 1849. In this proclamation he promises to ovecome the problems and criminality of the prior government and eventually succeeds according to Zinny: "En efecto, en tan difíciles circunstancias, y apesar del melancólico cuadro que presentaba la situacion, para el delicado puesto de gobernar un pueblo sumergido en la mas espantosa anarquía que la historia argentina recuerda, el general Rodriguez cumplió al pié de la letra lo que en esta proclama prometía." Schrift" u.a. erbauliche Werke Friedrich Leopolds, die für sich allein schon fast 30 Bände ausmachen. - Obwohl diese Ausgabe gelegentlich als "wohlfeile" bezeichnet wird, ist das vorliegende Exemplar auf feines Vergé-Papier gedruckt.
