A voyage to the West Indies: containing various observations made during a residence in Barbadoes, and several of the Leeward Islands, with some notices and illustrations relative to the city of Paramabo, in Surinam. With engravings

London: Richard Philips, 1820. First edition, slim 8vo, pp. [4], 106; frontispiece map, 6 aquatint plates by Neele & Son after sketches by R. Stennett; near fine, sound copy in 20th century half brown morocco by Morrell, gilt-paneled spine, t.e.g. Issued as no. six of volume II of Phillips's series of Modern Voyages and Travels. "The author was a surgeon assigned to the naval hospital in Barbados in 1807 and later to a war vessel cruising through the islands. He spent about four years in Caribbean service and became thoroughly familiar with colonial society. His book presents an interesting picture of the rushing business conducted by the slave traders in Barbados on the eve of abolition and gives accounts of encounters with the Spanish and French during the course of the Napoleonic wars. The author saw little that was attractive in West Indian life and was greatly shocked by the general prevalence of immorality" (Ragatz, Guide For The Study Of British Caribbean History 1763-1834, p. 235).         A small archive concerning Theophilus Gates' Reformer newspaper

Philadelphia, 1820-28 - Three holograph letters signed by Gates as the "Editors of the Reformer," four manuscript receipts in Gates' hand, one signed, and one printed prospectus, with Gates' manuscript note in the margin. Theophilus Ransom Gates (1787-1846) was a self-styled visionary, itinerant preacher, author, utopian and advocate for free love and birth control, who published his memoirs and collected writings by age 30. Driven by unconventional religious beliefs, Gates collaborated with Philadelphia printer Joseph Rakestraw in 1820 to establish a radical monthly newspaper called The Reformer. It was anti-organized religion as represented by Lyman Beecher and others, who Gates maintained were attempting to take over the country in the name of religion. The prospectus, dated December 1823, states "The design of this work is to expose the clerical schemes and pompous undertakings of the present day, under the pretense of promoting religion, and to show that they are irreconcilable with the spirit and principles of the Gospel." Gates believed the missionaries and theological seminaries were out for themselves and power. The Reformer "will not be made an instrument for advancing the views or interests of any, but rebuking evils wherever met with." The correspondence and receipts in this small archive are all to a Jonathan Mabbett of Troy, New York, who was a subscriber and who apparently also sold subscriptions for The Reformer. The correspondence concerns the price of subscriptions and distribution, and offers interesting insight into how Gates was managing and distributing his newspaper. We could not locate any other autograph material by Gates or about The Reformer. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

A JOURNAL OF VOYAGES AND TRAVELS IN THE INTERIOR OF NORTH AMERICA, BETWEEN THE 47TH AND 58TH DEGREES OF NORTH LATITUDE, EXTENDING FROM MONTREAL NEARLY TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN, A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 5,000 MILES, INCLUDING AN ACCOUNT OF THE PRINCIPAL OCCURRENCES, DURING A RESIDENCE OF NINETEEN YEARS, IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. TO WHICH ARE ADDED, A CONCISE DESCRIPTION OF THE FACE OF THE COUNTRY, ITS INHABITANTS, THEIR MANNERS, CUSTOMS, LAWS, RELIGION, ETC. AND CONSIDERABLE SPECIMENS OF THE TWO LANGUAGES, MOST EXTENSIVELY SPOKEN; TOGETHER WITH AN ACCOUNT OF THE PRINCIPAL ANIMALS, TO BE FOUND IN THE FORESTS AND PRAIRIES OF THIS EXTENSIVE REGION

Andover: Printed by Flagg & Gould, 1820. FIRST EDITION. This vivid account of life as a fur trader in Canada is an important source of information on the North American frontier and the Native Americans who lived there. Daniel Williams Harmon (1778-1843) was a New Englander who went to Canada in 1800 to follow the booming fur trade, and his endeavors took him westward from Montreal all the way to the Pacific. As ANB observes, it is "an intensely personal memoir of his encounters with the elements, the natives, friends, and ultimately his own inner self. The abiding appeal of these encounters derives from their extraordinary nature. The native broths of buffalo dung and cariboo dung must have shocked the 'civilized' palate of New Englanders. So too the claim that the seventy souls at Fort Alexandria (near Fort Pelly, Saskatchewan) devoured 450 pounds of meat a day." Harmon is largely approving of the native cultures he encounters, praising the generosity and hospitality they extend to him, but he is disturbed by the casual acceptance of murder and the treatment of women. He takes a native woman as a companion, originally intending to leave her with her own people when he returned to "civilization," but in an affecting passage near the end of the journal, he explains his decision to take her back the the States with him, their relationship having been "cemented by a long and mutual performance of kind offices, but, also, by a more sacred consideration." Following the journal itself are sections describing the Indian tribes on the East and West sides of the Rocky Mountains, vocaulary lists for the two most widely spoken Indian languages, and a brief discussion of the principal fauna in the region.. 210 x 125 mm. (8 1/4 x 5"). 432 pp.Edited by Daniel Haskell. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary tree sheep, smooth spine, red morocco label. In a brown cloth chemise and matching morocco-backed slipcase. With frontispiece portrait and folding map depicting the interior of North America. Rear pastedown with errata slip laid on. Howes H-205; Sabin 30404; Wagner-Camp 17; Streeter 3692; Field 656. A little worming to tail end of spine, front board with three patches of lost patina from insect activity, but the binding otherwise sound and attractive; the text somewhat foxed due to paper quality, map with one-inch split along one fold, otherwise A FINE COPY with few signs of use.         VEDUTE DI ROMA [binder's title].

Unknown place: Agapito Franzetti, 1820. 130 engravings on 65 sheets. Each sheet (page) meausures 113mm x 140mm. No title page (if issued). No date of publication is listed, circa 1820. Original 3/4 leather binding with moderate shelfwear, spine worn with minor loss to extremities, but intact and attractive. Mottled decorative paper sheets cover the boards, and the pastedowns are marbled. Many of the plates are loose, and several pages are lightly to moderately stained. The engravings are strong and clean impressions, showing views of buildings of ancient and modern construction. Most of the engravings are signed in the plate either "A. Franzetti" or "A. F." Many of the plates are titled and show similar views to many by Piranesi, though they are not identical. If this is a pocket version of Piranesi's "Vedute de Roma" it is either lacking 5 images, or it was issued with 130 images instead of 135. Bibliographic information on this publication is elusive. Included is a circa 1950 French protective slipcase, decorated with marbled paper. From the library of Paul Mac Alister. Plates include Basilica de S. Pietro in Vaticano, Monte Cavallo, Piazza del Popolo, Basilica di S. Sebastiano fuori le mura, Basilica di S. Lorenzo fuori le mura, Porto di Ripagrande, Ponte Molle, Chiesa de S. Celso e Giuliano, Chiesa e Casa di S. Ma. Maddalena, Palazzo della Cancelleria Aposta, Palazzo di Venezia verso la Ripresa, Chiesa e Vonvento di S. Marcello, Chiese e Casa di S.         Original hand-written and illustrated book of naval signalling.

England: c. 1800-1820. Octavo, quarter morocco, 117 pp manuscript with hand colouring to 14 pages, original boards with modern rebacking, preserved in book form box. A fine example of a rare type of naval manuscript: an officer's personally-prepared guide to the naval flag signals in use at the turn of the 18th century. The success of the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) lay in the vastly increased number of ships-of-the-line (with a capacity from 74 to 120 guns) and frigates that had not only significant gun power but also the speed to evade enemy ships. The British fleet had increased from 500 ships in 1793 to 950 by 1805. For commanders to employ the larger squadrons effectively they needed individual captains to acknowledge and obey instructions promptly. In 1799 Royal Navy captain (later rear admiral) Sir Home Riggs Popham (1762-1820) had developed a system of telegraphic signals using numbered and eventually lettered flags which could create up to 30,000 words as well as set phrases. The Telegraphic Signals or Marine Vocabulary was published in several editions between 1801 and 1812 and although the Admiralty did not formally adopt the system until 1816 it was used extensively by commanders during the Napoleonic War. The "vocabulary" used a system of three or four flag hoists which referenced words or phrases in the Signal Book. A starting flag preceded the message hoist with a finishing flag indicating the message was complete. The standardised signal messages were passed from ship to ship ensuring swift actionAlthough every officer needed a familiarity with the signalling system and its vocabulary, very few copies of the printed guides were issued for reasons of security. Some officers compiled their own vocabularies, clandestine guides usually in pocket-sized books that could be quickly hidden from either friend or foe. This example, written in the extremely neat hand of an officer, indicates the skills required of an officer during the era of British Naval triumphs. The thumb-indexed book contains 390 signal messages, hand coloured pendant signals, a general index to signals, an Index to signals from Private ships and a list of some 1100 ships-of-the-line including their gun power. Some entries appear in a later heavier (or perhaps older?) hand. The first pages show pennant positions on the masts and the nine flags of Popham's system. On following pages are the identifying pennants and vanes of ships, all coloured by hand. Although there is no specific indication of which naval officer may have compiled this volume, there may be an indication of its likely date since one of the tables, "Distinguishing Vanes", identifies each of the British ships at the 1801 Battle of Copenhagen (the vanes were important for not only the identification of the ship, but also the wind direction). It was of course at this battle that Nelson put a telescope to his blind eye in order to disregard Admiral Hyde Parker's signal to disengage. Unfortunately, Edward Riou did obey and met his end. Another captain, William Bligh of HMS Glatton survived. It is intriguing to speculate further: there were close personnel links between the sea battles of the Napoleonic Wars and the first decades of settlement in Australia. Provenance: Private collection (Sydney). In appropriate original condition, with spine renewed in modern times.

The Black Book; or, Corruption Unmasked! Being an account of places, pensions, and sinecures, the revenues of the clergy and landed aristocracy...the Civil List...the robbery of charitable foundations...the whole forming a complete exposition of the cost, influence, patronage, and corruption of the Borough Government

London: John Fairburn, 1820. First Edition. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary boards, black stained edges, rebacked and with new corners, some internal foxing, else a nice, crisp copy. First Edition. 1 vols. 8vo. "The Bible of the Reformers". The first edition of a book which led the battle for electoral reform in 19th Century England, being a compilation of the financial, political, ecclesiastical, and nepotistic abuses which were sustained under the institution of rotten and pocket boroughs, and which brought about the passage of the Reform bill of 1832. The Bill redistributed 143 parliamentary seats to industrial areas, providing more proportional representation, reducing the traditional powers of the large landowners and the aristocracy, and strengthening the British system of parliamentary democracy. Wade's fascinating exposé went into numerous editions, in which he named names, listed unearned compensations, pointed out abuses of patronage, the milking of foundations, political log-rolling, influence peddling and other conduct, all of which has a curiously modern ring. "Religion a trade, justice a trade, government a trade--all for money; nothing for the public good." A fierce and fascinating book. PMM 296; Kress C.638

XVIII, including title, 340pp., with a large folding map of the Russian Empire and 10 maps of regions with outlines in contemporary colour. Contemporary red half morocco over marbled boards, gilt lettering to spine; joints in upper margin slightly split. Detailed and systematic description of mineral springs of the Russian Empire along with bibliography of Russian and foreign publications on the subject. The text is accompanied by a folding map of the Russian Empire and maps of regions, including governorates of St. Petersburg, Moscow, Irkutsk, Kharkow, Orenburg and Taurida, showing mineral springs sources. Uncommon work by the Russia's eminent chemist. Alexander Nicolaus Scherer (1771 – 1824) was a Saint Petersburg-born German chemist and pharmacologist. After graduating from a University in Germany, Scherer returned to Russia to teach chemistry and pharmacy at the medico-surgical academy. He revolutionised chemistry education in Russia, replacing outdated books, largely old translations of foreign sources, with his works based on latest researches of the eminent chemists of the time - Lavoisier, Fourcroy and Tromsdorff. Scherer also introduced a much more practical approach to teaching, aiming to educate his students about different ways a theory could be put into practice. In 1815 he became a full member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Scherer was also instrumental in the creation of the Pharmaceutical Society of St. Petersburg.

      - Paris, A. Nepveu, 1820. 8vo (19.3 x 12.0 cm). xxviii, 302 pp., one hand-coloured folded frontispiece, one engraved folded table, five hand-coloured folded plates. Contemporary full tree calf. Spine rich gilt including empire vignettes and a red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Edges speckled.l Isaac Titsingh (1745-1812) was a Dutch surgeon, scholar, merchant and ambassador. During a long career in East Asia, Titsingh was a senior official of the Dutch East India Company. Between 1779 and 1784 he was head of a factory in Deshima, then the only "eye" between Japan and the rest of the world. 18th and early 19th century Japan was much of a mystery to foreigners. This work unveils some its secrets. However, it does not only deal with the Japanese and their customs, but also reports on the geology of the country and in particular on the active volcanos. Two of the large, hand-coloured folded plates depict eruptions; of the Asama-Yama, and of a volcano in the Simahara district. The first of these plates, as well as a view of the island of Deshima with the Dutch factory were used again in Titsingh's "Byzonderheden over Japan", volume II (1825), see Landwehr. This edition is the first one published. The French sinologist Jean Pierre Abel Rémusat (1788-1832) edited the work after Titsingh's death in Paris. An English translation was published in 1822 and formed the basis of a translation (back?) into Dutch. Boards slightly rubbed, caption of one plate shaved with some small loss of text. Inner front hinge reinforced, otherwise a fine copy of this very rare work. Brunet V, 28316; Landwehr 456 (not this work, but "Byzonderheden over Japan", see above). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

TRAVELS IN BRAZIL IN 1815, 1816, AND 1817: Translated from the German and Illustrated with Engravings.

Sir Richard Phillips,, London: 1820 - 112 pp. Second British edition; text in English; later, full speckled calf; black morocco label affixed to spine gilt stamped across; beige endpapers; illustrations complete with seven plates, one folding-out; and two fold-out aquatints. Binding tight; boards clean; plates with moderate foxing; aquatints fresh; fold-out edges lightly ragged not affecting image; see additional images provided. Quoting Borba 544: "Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied travelled through Brazil from 1815 to 1817, accompanied by the naturalists Georg Freyreiss and Friedrich Sellow. From Rio they journeyed to Cabo Frio, along the coast of Ilheus, and from there they sailed up the Jequitinhonha to the borders of Minas Geraes, finally reaching Bahia. From a scientific point of view this expedition was one of the most profitable of the nineteenth century. The enormous zoological collections which were assembled are today in the American Museum of Natural History of New York, acquired by them in 1870. When the work first appeared copies were sold for one thousand francs, an extravagant sum at that time. This English translation is of only the first volume of the [2 vol.] original edition. Quoting the text, p. 91: "There are several houses scattered about in this place, the inhabitants of which are very fond of music and dancing; one played the (violas) guittar, and the young people danced the Baduca, in which the body undergoes various contorsions, beating the time with their hands, and snapping two fingers of each hand alternately, in the manner of the Spanish castanets. Although the taste for dancing and music is general throughout these parts, yet they evince no disposition for the pleasures of the table, at least in most places. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
