Bjowulfs Drape. Et Gothisk Helte=Digt fra forrige Aar=Tusinde af Angel = Saxisk paa danske Riim ved Nik. Fred. Sev. Grundtvig.

Kjøbenhavn, Andreas Seidelin, 1820. 8vo. Contemporary half calf with some wear. Tear to upper capital and hinges worn. Internally occassional light brownspotting. LXXIV, 325 pp.. The highly important first translation into any modern language - and overall the second edition to appear - of the seminal Gothic tale that is Beowulf. This monumental work appeared merely five years after the first printing of the text (in Latin, 1815) and 13 years before the first English edition of Beowulf. With this edition, Grundtvig founded the study of Beowulf. "In the British Library there is a manuscript, its edges scorched and brittle, of "Beowulf", one of the very earliest poems in English and its first great literary masterpiece. It exists only in this one vellum codex and has survived for a thousand years, telling of an even earlier time, when the heroic age still was remembered by a Christian audience....In 1786, an Icelandic scholar, came to the [British] Museum, looking for documents relating to Denmark, where the first part of "Beowulf" takes place. He made two complete copies of the manuscript, the first time this had been done, one by a professional copyist and the other, himself, and returned to Copenhagen to study them. But then calamity. Denmark was occupied during the Napoleonic Wars and, in 1807, the English bombarded Copenhagen... [The] manuscript for an edition of "Beowulf", which just had been completed, was destroyed." The two transcripts were saved, however, work on them was begun again, and in 1815 the first printed edition of "Beowulf" appeared, in Latin, printed in Copenhagen. In 1820 the first translation of the seminal poem appeared, in Danish, translated by the great Danish author Grundtvig, sparking the interest in Beowulf that persists until this day. In 1833, the first English edition of Beowulf appeared

Principles of Political Economy, Considered with a View to their Practical Application

John Murray, London 1820 - First edition. vi, 601 pp. 1 vols. 8vo (219 x 132 mm.). First edition of this important classic of economic theory. "There can be no doubt that [Malthus'] importance for economists today rests mainly on his Principles of Political Economy. It was because of this latter work that J. M. Keynes (1933) reinstated Malthus as a major figure in modern economic thought" (New Palgrave). "One of the founders of modern economics," Malthus was credited by Keynes with framing the theory "that a lack of effective demand can cause economic crises" (PMM 251). "In his Principles of Political Economy, Malthus was proposing investment in public works and private luxury as a means of increasing effective demand, and hence as a palliative to economic distress. The nation, he thought, must balance the power to produce and the will to consume" (DSB IX:70). Goldsmith 22767; Lowndes, 1459; Kress C577 Bound in later half cloth and marbled boards, paper label.       Paris, 1820. Two columns of fifteen coupons each printed on either side of the prospectus, the whole enclosed by an ornamental border. Blanks in both coupons and prospectus completed with "3824." Signed in manuscript by American consul in France and by "De Redern et Cie." in Paris, "30 Juin 1820"; blindstamped with seals of the U.S. Consulate in Paris and the Compagnie de Colonisation Américaine. Signed in manuscript on verso by "Le Comte de Redern" and "A. Boudon[?]." Trimmed close, with some loss to border, particularly at foot of document. Early folds with minor closed tears at edges of horizontal fold and small hole at intersections of folds, one-eighth of an inch in diameter. A very good copy. Matted. A combination broadside prospectus and stock certificate for 100 acres of land, part of a 1,849,000-acre property in Virginia and Kentucky owned by the Compagnie de Colonisation Américaine, founded by Jean Sigismond Ehrenreich, Comte de Redern. The company's American agent was John Swan, an adventurer long active in Franco- American commercial affairs. The text describes the division of land sales between individual colonists and speculators, the different classes of shares, financial organizations, commercial potential, future improvements, etc. This is one of 12,000 shares constituting Series B, numbered 3824 and dated June 30, 1820. The Comte de Redern (1761-1841) was a Prussian diplomat, intellectual, eccentric, and entrepreneur. During the time he was serving as Prussian Minister at the Court of London in the early 1790s, Redern developed a friendship with Henri Saint-Simon, with whom he shared utopian visions and a progressive humanist philosophy. The two developed a financial partnership and jointly purchased French national lands during the 1790s, an enterprise imbued with idealism, but which dissolved into personal conflict that dragged on for decades. During the early 1800s, Redern invested heavily in both industry and land. In 1820, the time this certificate was issued, "his vast enterprises crashed around him. To escape his creditors, he fled to Brussels, and from there to Holland, where he was imprisoned. He took to practicing hypnotism, underwent a religious conversion...after many years he was allowed to return to France, where he resumed his philosophical studies" (Manuel, p.107). Redern wrote several books, including works on politics, psychology, and the nature of man. A rare document. OCLC locates three copies, at Filson Historical Society, Library of Virginia, and University of Virginia.

Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St. Agnes, and other poems.

London: Printed for Taylor and Hessey,, 1820. Duodecimo (165 × 99 mm). Bound by the Doves Bindery after Cobden-Sanderson's design (signed in gilt at the foot of the rear turn-in and dated 1908) in crushed red morocco, raised bands, titles and floral decorations to compartments gilt, panelling and floral decorations to boards gilt, all edges gilt. Housed in a black morocco solander box. With the half-title and publisher's advert leaf. Bookplate by Arthur Vernon to front pastedown. Slight offsetting from turn-ins, occasional mild spotting to margins of text block. An excellent copy. First edition of Keats's third book, beautifully bound by the Doves Bindery. The last book to be published in his lifetime, Keats and about which the author had "low hopes, though not spirits... this shall be my last trial; not succeeding, I shall try what I can do in the apothecary line". Though Keats did not live to see his fame confirmed, this last collection is his greatest single volume, containing the magnificent series of odes on which his reputation now rests, as well as his longer narrative poems - two medieval romances: the chilling Isabella or the Pot of Basil and the gothic romance The Eve of St Agnes; and two mythological fantasies: the weird Lamia and the ambitious, Miltonic fragment "Hyperion".

PROCLAMA A LOS HABITANTES DEL ESTADO DE CHILE. COMPATRIOTAS: AL FIN SE ACERCA EL DIA TAN SUSPIRADO POR VOSOTROS, COMO POR NUESTROS HERMANOS DEL PERÚ...[caption title]

[Santiago, 1820. Early folds. Ownership ink stamp between third and fourth lines of text, small numerical ink inscription in upper right corner. A few small holes, affecting only a few characters of text; chipping in upper right and lower left corners, with loss to six characters of text in the latter. White paper affixed to verso reinforcing two folds and areas of loss. Very light staining. A good copy. A stirring proclamation by South American liberator José de San Martín to the people of Chile shortly before his departure from that country for Peru. In 1820, two years after Chile declared and effectively won its independence from Spain, San Martín assembled a Pacific fleet to sail from Chile to Peru and aid in the struggle for independence there. The Chilean Navy's fleet of eight warships and sixteen transport ships set sail from Valparaíso on Aug. 20 and at Paracas, Peru on Sept. 7. San Martín's forces immediately attacked and seized the city of Pisco, beginning a long campaign of battle and diplomacy that helped lead to Peru's full liberation in 1824. The present broadside is signed in print by San Martín in Santiago, June 17, 1820. As he prepares for the journey to Peru, he calls on Chileans to keep peace and order during his absence and encourages patience with the young government. He concludes with a powerful declaration of the importance of the final stage of South America's fight for independence: "Compatriots! I am going to open the most memorable campaign of our revolution: on it hangs the consolidation of our destinies, the hopes of this vast continent, the fate of our families, the fortune of our friends, in short the sacred thing that is our honor. Entrusted in the justice of our cause, and under the protection of the Supreme Being, I promise you victory, and I do not doubt that she will crown...the perseverance of the brave ones who accompany me." A rare and powerful document. OCLC locates only one copy, at the John Carter Brown Library.

[CONSECUTIVE RUN OF EARLY ALABAMA STATE LAWS, 1820 - 1831]

Cahawba & Tuscaloosa. 1820-1831.. Twelve volumes, publication details and pagination provided in the listing below. Antique half calf and marbled boards. Ink ownership inscriptions to most titlepages, minor to occasionally heavy foxing, some toning. Overall, a very good set. A remarkable run of the earliest Alabama state laws and imprints, starting soon after statehood was granted on Dec. 14, 1819. Included here is a consecutive run of laws from the second session to the twelfth, as well as the acts passed at a special session in 1821. The composition of the laws follows other early American state laws, with acts establishing courts, banks, militia, elections, counties, and much more. Also as with other states at the time, Alabama immediately claims jurisdiction over Indian lands in the first volume of session laws included here, specifically "all that tract of country lying west of Willstown valley and belonging to the Cherokee nation of Indians." In addition, the second session includes an act tasking each county Sheriff with the duty to "sell all land and slaves taken into execution by him...." Several other acts deal with slavery, including an act amending an earlier act on the trials of slaves, an act granting Circuit Courts with jurisdiction in the trials of slaves for capital offenses, an act granting the governor authority to give instructions for the sale of slaves "condemned in the district court of the Unites States for this district," an act criminalizing trade with the slave population, an act "to prohibit the importation of slaves into this state for sale or hire," then an act repealing said law two years later, and acts specifying punishments for slaves convicted of manslaughter and rape. Each volume is rare, with OCLC recording between one and five copies of each imprint (eight of the imprints reporting three or fewer copies), with no Alabama institution recording any of them. A fascinating look at the legal framework in the early years of Alabama statehood. ^A complete listing of the imprints is as follows: ^1) ACTS PASSED AT THE SECOND SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ALABAMA.

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

THE CITY OF NEW YORK IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK, NORTH AMERICA

Springland, near Bristol, Pa.: Arch Street, [Philadelphia], 1820. Sheet size: 21 7/8 x 28 5/8 inches. Expertly repaired tears and restoration to blank margin, else very good. A fine example of the third state of "the Birch View with the Picnic Party." "This rendering of New York from across the East River is a companion to William Birch's view of Philadelphia...and was issued by the artist to arouse interest in a projected series of views of New York, which never appeared. Birch explains in his unpublished autobiography...that he visited New York frequently in his endeavor to prepare an iconography of the city...'I took many turns to New York where I met with friendly reception and politeness. I had nearly completed a set of drawings of that city which I meant to publish as a companion Volume to the Philadelphia; but found profits of the undertaking was not equal to the expense of travelling and the support of my family.'" "The Drawing of New-York," wrote Birch in the promotional literature for the view, "is from the opposite shore of the Sound, as it appears from a great eminence, forming a chaste and grand subject, very similar to the choice of subject made use of by the celebrated Salvator Rosa; the Bay is seen, and the opposite bank of the North River over the busy town at sunset, contrasting in the foreground with the quiet grazing of a horse under the wreck of an ancient tree, upon a sequestered lawn on Long-Island." The description was included in a prospectus for the first edition of Birch's Philadelphia views. "In the second state of the engraving, a picnic party was substituted for the white horse, and other changes were made...[The present example is from the third state], similar to the second, but with the imprint of William H. Morgan...in this form the plate was reissued about 1820" - Deák. The view shows a family enjoying a picnic on Brooklyn Heights at a place that gives a nice panoramic view of Manhattan from the southeast and which shows all the major buildings of the City in 1802, the date depicted, beginning with the south end of the Battery on the left. Visible through the masts of the ship on the river is the steeple of Trinity Church (at the west end of Wall Street). Farther to the right are St. Paul's, St. George's, the Dutch Reformed Church, and numerous other prominent features.

NEW BRITAIN. A NARRATIVE OF A JOURNEY...TO A COUNTRY SO CALLED BY ITS INHABITANTS, DISCOVERED IN THE VAST PLAIN OF THE MISSOURI, IN NORTH AMERICA, AND INHABITED BY THE PEOPLE OF BRITISH ORIGIN, WHO LIVE UNDER AN EQUITABLE SYSTEM OF SOCIETY, PRODUCTIVE OF PECULIAR INDEPENDENCE AND HAPPINESS

London, 1820. Later three-quarter dark brown morocco and cloth, bound by Riviere & Son, spine gilt with raised bands, marbled endpapers, t.e.g. Very good. Uncut on two sides. An interesting Utopian narrative, probably written under a pseudonym, describing an imaginary ideal state in the American West. The author tells how he heard from an Englishman named Hebertson about a settlement of people of Scottish origin in the plains near the Missouri River. He determined to visit, and commenced his journey from New York on April 7, 1818, travelling through Illinois, across the Mississippi and southwest until he reached New Britain. There he remained for nine months before returning to write his narrative. Most of the text describes the imaginary utopian civilization of New Britain, said to be founded by refugees from the era of Henry VIII seeking religious freedom. After a difficult beginning, the colony had renounced its previous laws and founded a government based on reason. The democratic socialist society evolved into a land of villages populated by artisans and agricultural works, a sort of Jeffersonian ideal. New ideas and technology were obtained by sending spies into the outside world. The society existed without money or trade, and with universal education, controlled population growth, and minimal government. Religion was limited to communal worship of a supreme spirit. The author, deeply impressed, returned to England to spread the good news. An interesting and rare American utopia, praised by Howgego as "pleasantly readable and has much of originality to commend it." Included in both the standard Americana and Utopian references, it is quite scarce in the market.

DER LANGE VERBORGENE FREUND, ODER: GETREUER UND CHRISTLICHER UNTERRICHT FÜR JEDERMANN, ENTHALTENDL WUNDERBARE UND KÜNSTE, SOWOHL FÜR DIE MENSCHEN ALS DAS VIEH

Reading, 1820. Contemporary half calf and patterned boards. Corners heavily worn, boards worn. Light toning and foxing. Very good. A legendary work of Pennsylvania German folk magic and remedies, in its exceedingly rare first edition. This publication (probably based on earlier works of folk magic in the European tradition such as the various works attributed to Albertus Magnus), was reprinted many times and became closely associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch magic tradition known as Braucherei. Often referred to as the "pow-wow book" in translation (indeed, still in print today), it is a work of broad appeal, as so many of the spells, recipes, and remedies are universally applicable to rural concerns, especially those pertaining to both human and animal health. The supposedly occult powers of the book figure in works of fiction as well. Not surprisingly, this first edition appears rarely, for all editions saw heavy use. Three copies located in OCLC; of these, only one copy is in North America, at the American Antiquarian Society. This is the first copy we have ever handled of this book, although we have hoped to have one since we first learned of it forty years ago.

FLORA BOREALI-AMERICANA, SISTENS CARACTERES PLANTARUM QUAS IN AMERICA SEPTENTRIONALI

Paris, 1820. Half titles. Modern half calf and marbled boards, spines gilt, leather labels. Ex-lib. with unobtrusive blindstamps, contents bit tanned, else very good. Andre Michaux came to America in 1785 to collect information on American trees which might be valuable to the French government. With the help of his son, François Andre, Michaux established a nursery and travelled extensively throughout the United States until 1796. In 1801 he published a work on American oaks, followed in 1803 by the present work, the most detailed study of American trees then issued. Although the titlepage is dated 1820, this issue is identical to that of 1803 but with a cancel titlepage, and the present issue is scarcer than its predecessor. The engraved plates were executed by P.J. Redouté, while the text was largely the work of the elder Michaux, with some assistance from his son and Louis Claude Richard, whom Asa Gray credited with the "sagacious observations, and the elegant terse and highly characteristic specific phrases of this work." An important work of American natural history.

Sketch of a System of the Philosophy of the Human Mind. Part First. Comprehending the Physiology of the Mind.

Bell & Bradfute et al., Edinburgh 1820 - Half title + TP + 1 leaf = Advertisement (see below) + [vii]-xv = Preface + [xvii]-ix =Contents + [1]-295, Octavo. First Edition.A Dramatic Overview by "the Last of the Scottish School of Metaphysicians"The Advertisement following the TP reads: "As in the present state of Dr Brown's health, it is quite impossible for him even to hope to finish his Text Book in the course of the present Session; and as he is at the time very desirous, that those who are atteding his Class should be able to avail themselves as much as possible of the part already completed; he thought fit, however awkward it may be, to publish it as a Fragment. College of Edinburgh, 5th March 1820." Brown died in April of 1820. The book was published under the care of his friend and biographer, David Welsh. "In 1819, he prepared his 'Physiology of the Mind' as a text-book for his students, and put it into the press the following winter. By the Christmas of that year he was rather unwell; in spring he removed for the benefit of his health to London, and died at Brompton in April, 1820." (McCosh, p. 324) Original brown boards with bumped corners. The spine has the original printed paper spine label, darkened but completely readable. On the front board, some student has doodled the name "Brown" (about 1" wide) in two locations. Contemporary k signature to top right corner of TP (G. Kirkpatrick). Two more, small student graffiti on the final blank leaf. Uncut. A really lovely copy of an extremely uncommon work. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Portrait miniature on ivory.

c.1820. Painted on ivory, oval (90 × 75 mm), in attractive contemporary embossed gilt window mount, framed and glazed. Late nineteenth-century MS genealogical notes mounted on the backboard, including family tree. Also note "Painted circa 1820" and a catalogue number. Ivory rippled, and with two hair-line cracks, but the colour still strong, and remains attractive. Neil Benjamin Edmonstone (1765-1841) was the youngest of the five sons of Sir Archibald Edmonstone, first baronet of Duntreath. Edmonstone was admitted to the East India Company as a writer, travelling out Calcutta in 1783. "He soon gained entry to the secretariat: he was made deputy Persian translator by Earl Cornwallis in 1789, and Persian translator by Sir John Shore in 1794, and in 1798 he was appointed by the earl of Mornington (later Marquess Wellesley) as his private secretary. In that capacity, in 1799, he accompanied the governor-general to Madras and took part in the campaign which crushed Tipu Sultan … Promoted on 1 January 1801 to the post of secretary of the government of India's secret and political department, Edmonstone was made responsible for the planning of relations with all princely states. As such, he played an important part in forming strategies which led to the subduing of the Maratha confederacy led by the peshwa. The 'Wellesley policy' of assuring company hegemony in India by means of a system of 'subsidiary alliances' can be attributed to Edmonstone, though he remained discreetly in the background" (ODNB). He remained in the post after Wellesley left in 1805, and continued to "reinforce the [imperial] system he had done so much to initiate". With the arrival of Lord Minto as governor-general in 1807 "Edmonstone's powerful influence became, if anything, even stronger. Again, as in the days of Lord Wellesley, he acted as the governor-general's private secretary, and in this capacity he soon gained as much influence over policy as he had possessed before". Late in 1809 he became Chief Secretary to the Government of India; and, in 1812, he succeeded his colleague and friend James Lumsden as member of the supreme council at Calcutta. When he retired from India at the end of his five year term "the company's 'paramountcy' over India was nearly complete. His thirty-four years of service in India were crowned, soon after his return to England, by election to the East India Company's court of directors". In Lives of Indian Officers J. W. Kaye described him as "the ubiquitous Edmonstone, one of the most valuable officials and far-seeing statesmen which the Indian civil service has ever produced".

Unbekannter Künstler. Wanderer an einer Burgruine. Federzeichnung und Aquarell a
