        West-Oestlicher Divan

Stuttgard: in der Cottaischen Buchhandlung, 1819. First edition, second printing. Few light spots of foxing to first and last leaves, top edge a bit dusty, still a very nice, largely untrimmed copy.. 8vo, 556pp; handsome later three-quarter vellum and marbled boards. The first printin of Goethe's great cycle of Sufi-inspired verses is exceedingly scarce. The second printing, as here, is distinguished by corrected text on pages 7 and 9, doubled pagination of pages 399-400 and missed pagination on pages 495-496. A very appealing copy, including its famous engraved frontispiece evoking Persian calligraphy.

THE TRUE TRAVELS, ADVENTURES AND OBSERVATIONS OF CAPTAINE JOHN SMITH [and] THE GENERALL HISTORIE OF VIRGINIA, NEW-ENGLAND, AND THE SUMMER ILES, WITH THE NAMES OF THE ADVENTURERS, PLANTERS, AND GOVERNOURS FROM THEIR FIRST BEGINNING, AN. 1584. TO THIS PRESENT 1626. WITH THE PROCEEDINGS OF THOSE SEVERALL COLONIES AND THE ACCIDENTS THAT BEFELL THEM IN ALL THEIR JOURNYES AND DISCOVERIES. ALSO THE MAPS AND DESCRIPTIONS OF THOSE COUNTRYES, THEIR COMMODITIES, PEOPLE, GOVERNMENT, CUSTOMES, AND RELIGION YET KNOWN (2 Volumes, Complete)

Richmond, VA: Franklin Press, William W. Gray, Printer, 1819. First American Edition, from the London Edition of 1629. Full Leather. Very Good binding. Octavo. The First American Edition of Captain John Smith's important work on the early English settlement on this continent. Complete with 2 folding maps, the nine-panel folding plate, 2 frontispieces (scarce thus). It goes without saying that Smith was a seminal figure in the colonization of North America. His account of his travels was integral in helping to encourage others to make the transatlantic trek. Despite some notable exaggerations in his writing, his reporting of the possibilities of successful colonization of the New World was surprisingly evenhanded in comparison with his contemporaries who quite normally asserted that gold was in abundance. He was realistic about the dangers but optimistic about the possibilities as well. In contemporary tree calf, with morocco labels. (Sabin 82852; Shaw & Shoemaker 49438; Swem17083). Very Good binding.

London: printed for T.M'Lean . printed by J. Brettell . 1819. First edition. Abbey, J.R. Life 238. 24 hand-colored illustrations - 1819 Don Quixote de la Mancha Cervantes English Charles Jarvis Translation 4v “the most accurate translation of Don Quixote” "Small wonder if the world received Don Quixote with delight! There was nothing like unto it before: there has been nothing to eclipse it since". – Rius, D. Leopoldo. This rare early 19th-century printing of the famous Spanish novel ‘Don Quixote’ is an exact line-for-line re-issue of Charles Jervas translation from 1801. This translation is highly praised as the most accurate translation of the novel through the 18th-century. Worth noting, it is because his translation of ‘Don Quixote’ that Jervas’ name was changed to Jarvis – due to a printer’s error – and the work has become known as ‘the Jarvis translation.’ Item number: #365 Price: $1500 CERVANTES Saavedra, Miguel de The life and exploits of the ingenious gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha.         The Vampyre; A Tale.

London: for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones,, 1819. Octavo (223 × 140 mm). Finely bound by R. R. Donnely & Sons, Chicago, in 20th-century purple full morocco, spine gilt in compartments with titles direct, double gilt rule bordering boards, gilt rule to board edges, gilt-roll to turn-ins, grey endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a patterned cloth slipcase With half-title, the "Extract of a Letter" pp.73-84, and the final blank. The binding fine, ink mark to half-title, damp-stain to half-title and title page, discreetly repaired marginal tear to c2, c3, and c7, a few other mild damp-stains and some spotting within, but still a very good copy, untrimmed and unwashed. First edition, third issue, this handsome copy is notably untrimmed, retaining the half-title, the "Extract of a Letter Containing an Account of Lord Byron's Residence in the Island of Mitylene" pp.73-84, and the final blank. The Vampyre was conceived during the same competitive storytelling evening as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and was written by Byron's doctor, John William Polidori (1795–1821). Henry Colburn first published it on 1 April 1819 in his New Monthly Magazine, with the subtitle "A Tale by Lord Byron". They also began issuing a book edition, with Byron again given as the author, before Sherwood, Neely & Jones took over the publishing and issued the book with their imprint on the title and Byron's name removed. The Colburn first issue is unobtainably rare, and the second issue is very scarce indeed. This is the third issue, with the first gathering (the Prefatory "Extract of a Letter from Geneva") reset into 23 lines of text (removing the suggestion of improprieties regarding Mary Shelley and Claire Clairmont, "two sisters as the partakers of his revels") and "lmost" on the final line of page 36. Byron publicly disowned authorship of the text, but the subsequent success of the publication was due largely to its connections to the famous poet, and Polidori saw neither recognition nor much remuneration for his creation. He committed suicide by drinking prussic acid two years later. "Although by no means the first appearance of the vampire in European literature, Polidori's tale established the prototype later developed in Bram Stoker's Dracula" (ODNB).

Nouveau Système de Minéralogie. Traduit du Suédois.

Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1819. 8vo (200 x 124 mm). pp. (4), vi, 314, (1). Contemporary calf, gilt lettered label (somewhat rubbed). First published in Swedish in 1814. First French edition, of this famous mineralogical classic. 'In 1812 he received a gift of a large number of minerals which he later decided to classify. The methods of mineral classification existing at the time were based on appearance and physical properties. These seemed highly unsystematic to Berzelius. He concluded from his analytical experience that a logical classification could be based only on chemical composition. In his original system, first published in 1814, he arranged the minerals in terms of their basic constituents, although he later revised this and placed chief emphasis on the acid component. Like many of Berzelius' innovations, his system of mineral classification was at first received with some hostility, but this was gradually overcome. During his visit to Paris in 1818 he won the approval of Haüy, the leading mineralogist of the day, whose own system was based on physical properties' (DSB).//Ward & Carozzi 202; Hoover 122.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Bayreuth, 26. III. 1819. - 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Kl.-8vo.

Chez Mequignon - Marvis libraire, Paris 1819 - In 8, cm 13 x 21, pp. (4) + VI + 314 + (2); XVI + 190 + (2) + 120 + (2). Traders Ready Reckoner

1819. First Edition . CORNELL, Stephen. The Traders Ready Reckoner, Containing, A Marketing Table; An Interest Table; A Table for Casting WagesÂ… Hudson (New York): Printed for the Author, By Ashbel Stoddard, 1819. 12mo (4 by 7 inches), period style three quarter speckled brown calf gilt, red morocco spine label, marbled boards. $2500.First edition of this scarce 1819 manual of marketing tables, interest tables, wage calculations and more by New York mathematician and merchant Stephen Cornell, with over 150 tables and large folding “Interest Table.”This scarce first edition of CornellÂ’s Traders Ready Reckoner, containing extensive marketing and wage tables, and a large folding “Interest Table,” was a much-needed resource for educators, governmental assessors, farmers and merchants in the early 1800s, when many Americans were relatively unschooled. Popular guides such as this were invaluable at a time when “numerical tables, such as for polynomial functions, were routinely calculated by humans. They were actually called ‘computersÂ’ (meaning ‘one that computesÂ’)” (Wonderful World of Early Computing). Self-published by Cornell, this popular Reckoner contains over 150 pages of “tables shewing at one view, the amount or value of any number or quantity of goods or merchandiseÂ… in so plain or easy a manner that a person, quite unacquainted with Arithmetic may hereby ascertain the value of any number of hundreds, pounds, ounces, ells, or yards, &c. at any price whatever.” CornellÂ’s calculations were ably authenticated prior to publication by Jacob Willets, author of works such as The ScholarÂ’s Arithmetic (1817). OCLC lists 18 copies. See Shaw & Shoemaker 47731. Stephen Cornell is possibly a relative of Ezra Cornell, founder of Western Union and co-founder of Cornell University.Text and tables quite fresh. A near-fine copy.
