The Dead Asses. A Lyrical Ballad

London: Smith and Elder, 1819. 24 pp. 8vo. Extracted from bound volume. 24 pp. 8vo. Rare Wordsworth parody. One of four lengthy parodies of Wordsworth written in 1819. "[[M]uch more likely the work of John Hamilton Reynolds than 'Benjamin the Waggoner,' often attributed to Reynolds. Although 'The Dead Asses' captures something of the arrogant tone in many of Wordsworth's critical statements (in addition to mocking his hyper-sensitivity and self-absorption), Coleridge also is a target of the parodist. Both 'Christabel' and 'To a Young Ass' furnish evidence with which the parodist satirizes Coleridge's excessive sympathy with all living things. The parodist turns Coleridge into someone asinine but, in the concluding lines, Wordsworth becomes the ass itself" (Ken and Ewen, eds, Romantic Parodies, p 203). Rare: NUC lists three copies, at Yale, Cornell, and Indiana.

        The Humourist

London: Printed and Published by J. Robins & Co., 1819. With the Very Rare First Issue of Volume I [CRUIKSHANK, George, illustrator]. The Humourist: A Collection of Entertaining Tales, Anecdoes, Repartees, Witty Sayings, Epigrams, Bon Mots, Jeu d'esprits, &c. Carefully selected. London: Printed and Published by J. Robins & Co., [n.d., 1819 (Volume I); 1819 (Volumes II-III); 1820 (Volume IV)]. First edition, with the very rare first issue of Volume I (bound from the parts, with the printed title bearing "Vol. I" but no date, and p. 44 headed "Dr Johnson"). Four small octavo volumes (6 1/8 x 3 7/8 inches; 156 x 99 mm.). 226, [2]; 230, [2]; 222, [2]; 226, [2] pp. Forty hand-colored etched plates after Cruikshank, including four frontispieces and four vignette titles. Early twentieth-century full crushed rose morocco by Rivière & Son, covers with multi gilt borders and decorative corner pieces, spines lettered and decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments, gilt board edges and turn-ins, all edges rough gilt, dark blue coated endpapers. An excellent copy. With the engraved bookplate of The Library at Carolands on each pastedown. "It had long been held that the first volume only was issued in parts, in green paper printed wrappers, with either a type ornament border or the grotesque woodcut that is found on the boards of the volume, but recently a Part 13 of Vol. 2 came into the possession of Mr. F.J. Callcott who has kindly lent it to me for reproduction. It is therefore clear that the first two volumes were certainly first issued in parts and probably all four, and Douglas was incorrect in his assumption. A complete set of even the ten parts comprising the first volume is unknown in the original wrappers. The first issue should be therefore bound from the parts, is never genuinely found in the original boards, and should have the words "Vol. 1," on the printed title, but no date. The first issue of the volume in the printed boards has the date 1819 upon the printed title, but not the words "Vol. 1." The second issue has both the date 1819 and the words "Vol. 1" on the printed title. There are ten coloured etchings, including the engraved title, to each volume, all dated and with the imprint of J. Robins & Co., except the vignette titles, plate 7 of Vol. 2, and plate 4 of Vol. 3 which do not have the date, although with the imprint; this is a "point" of the first issue as in later issues, several plates are without imprint or date. Vol. 1 was reissued in 1822, so dated on the title, the dates running 1822, 1819, 1819, 1820. There are differences in the letterpress of this reissue. Notably at p. 44, where in the first issue the tale is "Dr. Johnson," while in the 1822 reissue it is "Epitaph on a Dyer." (Cohn). The Humourist "gave Cruikshank his first sustained opportunity to devise illustrations; Blanchard Jerrold calls it 'his first remarkable separate work.' Robins issued forty six-penny parts…with a colored etching in each, during 1819 and 1820…The vignette title page for volume 4 shows a grotesque dandy holding a cocked hat, grinning at the audience from a stage whose proscenium arch is decorated with swagged curtains and comic masks. The illustrations preserve that sense of theater: each scene takes place within a frame surmounted by emblematic props aspiring to a pedimental shape and supported by a base on which the title is inscribed, along with additional scenes and props" (Patten, George Cruikshank's Life, Times, and Art, I, p. 190). The first issue of Volume I is very rare; sets nearly always appear with it from the later re-issue (title-page dated "1822"). Cohn 419.

A Statistical Historical & Political Description of The Colony of New South Wales, and its dependent Settlements in Van Diemen's Land.

London: G. and W.B. Whittaker, 1819. Octavo, early manuscript ownership to the title-page, slight preliminary foxing yet a most attractive copy in mid nineteenth-century half calf with gilt spine lettering and ornament. First edition of the first original work published by an Australian-born author, an important work providing invaluable insights into the rapidly expanding colony. This copy has the three printing errors noted by Wantrup in their uncorrected state indicating it is the first impression of the work.Written to encourage emigration to Australia, the book also demanded free institutions in the colony. "It is the beginning of the whole genre of books written to urge intending migrants to choose Australia over the alternatives, which were mostly cheaper to get to, and which include some of the first manifestoes of Australian patriotism ... " (People, Print and Paper).Wentworth, now famous for his role in the exploration of the Blue Mountains, wrote this account of New South Wales while studying law in England. It is a personal account of the colony rather than an objective history, and as such gives valuable insights into a privileged colonial life under Governor Macquarie. His book forms a valuable source of information relating to the state of the colony in the very early years of free settlement. The role of transported convicts is a central issue to the future of the colony, and a chapter of 44 pages describes the system of government during Macquarie's rule. The rehabilitation of convicts was subject of special interest to Wentworth, especially their role in colonial society upon completion of their sentences.

Narrative of a Voyage in the Indian Seas, in the Nisus Frigate... During the years 1810 and 1811.

London: Richard Phillips, circa, 1819. Octavo, folding frontispiece map and three other plans and plates; recent half calf with gilt spine lettering, Uncommon: a rather interesting voyage to India via the Indian Ocean and Java by James Prior, an officer aboard the Nisus. Prior's book is one of the rare pre-1829 accounts to record a visit to the northwest coast of Australia, as is illustrated by the important folding map with the track of the voyage. The book is also particularly interesting for Prior's account of the fall of Mauritius in late 1810, just months after Flinders was finally released from his imprisonment by General DeCaen (Flinders had sailed for England on 14 June 1810, a matter of months before the invasion here described). Prior's work is one of only a handful of contemporary books on the island, and includes an excellent chart of the harbour at Port Louis. The Isle de France was a strategically important French outpost in the Indian Ocean, and a good eight pages of Prior's narrative concerns the British armed landing on 29 November 1810. There is also a detailed sounding chart of Port Louis to the eastward of Cannoner's point and a table of engraved text titled "Plan of the Landing of the British Army in Mapou Bay, Isle de France", with details of the numbers of men per vessel, their regiment, and deployment upon landing.Prior's book is also significant for his passing references to the West Australian coast, which remained as enigmatic and impenetrable to English mariners in the early nineteenth-century as it had to the Dutch almost two centuries before. Prior writes 'approaching New Holland on the 6th of August, in the morning, land was discovered in the vicinity of the north-west Cape, the most prominent part of the coast. As we neared it the eye anxiously ranged over the widely-extended surface, in order to fix on some inviting spot where might be traced the habitations of men; but nothing of this kind could be distinguished'. He concludes that this land 'in its present unknown state, may safely retain the old appellation of Terra Incognita'. The handsomely engraved folding frontispiece map includes the New Holland coastline (although Prior's account is not listed in Perry and Prescott's A Guide to Maps of Australia in Books Published 1780-1830). Fine.

The Works of Laurence Sterne in Four Volumes. With a life of the author, written by himself.

London: Cadell and Davies, 1819. Four volumes, octavo, contemporary full polished blue calf, gilt decorated spine and boards. Early collected edition, including the texts of his two of Sterns better known works, Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy. Sir Walter Scott deemed Sterne 'one of the most original geniuses that England has produced'. Incomplete at his death, A Sentimental Journey was the result of the four years travelling on the Continent. Always of quite frail health, he left England in 1762, and began composing this work on his return whilst dying of tuberculosis. Inventive, abrasive, and exuberant, it is a timeless classic. Sterne himself commented that 'I have laid a plan for something new, quite out of the beaten track'.

Contemporary half calf with spine gilt, decor. and red and green label (vol. 2 with small defect at top spine). A LANDMARK WORK IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF DISEASES OF THE LUNGS AND HEART, ANNOUNCING THE INVENTION OF THE STETHOSCOPE. As head physican at the Necker Hospital in Paris, Laennec's investigations of emphysema, tuberculosis, and other chest diseases inspired him to improvise a technological innovation that would revolutionize physical diagnosis. Although auscultation had been known since the days of Hippocrates, and diagnostic percussion of the chest had most recently been advocated by Auenbruegger, these methods were often inconvenient and were subject to frequent misinterpretation. Experimentation with a rolled paper cylinder led Laennec to invent a more reliable diagnostic instrument, a foot-long tube of cedar wood, which amplified the sounds of his patients' hearts and lungs. Even more impressive than his invention of this brilliantly simple instrument, however, were the uses Laennec made of it: through methodical observation he taught himself the significance of the various sounds produced by the movements of the heart and lungs and drew up a clear and detailed classification system correlating. Fine.

        The Vampyre; A Tale.

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS, earliest issue with the preface unaltered and set in 24 lines rather than 23 and containing the commentary suggesting improprieties regarding "two sisters as the partakers of his revels", half-title present, pp.xxv+[i](blank)+[27]-84, 8vo., bound in the original gray paper wrappers, entirely uncut as issued.Polidori, Lord Byron's personal physician, accompanied him into exile and was present at the Chateau near Geneva on the evening in 1816 when, after recounting German ghost stories, Byron suggested that each of those present should compose a supernatural tale. This was the occasion that gave rise to Mary Shelley's supernatural classic, Frankenstein, and to Polidori's The Vampyre - a much inferior work, but still celebrated as the first vampire-gothic work in English, and extremely popular in its time (partly, no doubt, because it first appeared as the work of Byron).

Pavia: Reale Tipografia della Guerra, 1819. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to (270x210 mm). [8], 60, [1] pp., 6 engraved folding plates, mild browning, foxing to plates and text pages. Contemporary half green morocco, red spine label, marbled boards (very slight wear, spine ends a little rubbed); slipcase. Good copy, complete. ----Waller 8665, see Garrison-Morton 5738; Zeis 548; Gnudi-Webster p.320. - First Italian Edition of von Graefe's classic Rhinoplastik, the first important work after Tagliacozzi and Carpue on plastic surgery published the year before. The edition is a summary version prepared by Schönberg, the chief physician of the Austrian Army hospital in Naples. In his treatise, Schönberg uses both von Graefe's text and plates but also cites Carpue's 'Account of Two Successful Operations for Restoring a Lost Nose' (1816; Garrison-Morton 5737), together with its German translation and with preface by von Graefe. Schönberg's summary is apparently the earliest general account of modern plastic surgery in Italian. As rare as the original German edition of Rhinoplastik, only 3 copies are listed in OCLC. Very Good.

Instructions de Daprès sur la Navigation des Indes Orientales.

Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1819. Octavo, title-page a little shorter than the body of text (which has generous margins); in a superb contemporary binding of crimson roan leather, ornately gilt, spine richly gilt with fleur-de-lys devices at centre of each compartment between bands, dark green moiré silk endpapers with complex gilt dentelle borders, sides with wide gilt borders, royal arms of Louis Philippe in gilt at centre of each side. A superb copy prepared in a royal binding, with the Bourbon arms, for the Duc d'Orléans, the future King Louis-Philippe. At the time of publication of this work he had spent four years in Paris after returning from his long exile; a member of the court and a significant political figure throughout the Bourbon Restoration from 1815 to 1830, he finally ascended to the throne himself in 1830. He ruled France - the last king to do so - from 1830 to 1848.This is the final edition of d'Après de Mannevillette's Instructions, the publication of data to explain and supplement his maps of the eastern oceans, collectively published as the Neptune Oriental. The text of the Instructions was updated several times by d'Après de Mannevillette himself while he served as cartographer for the Compagnie des Indes, though further amendments followed his death in 1780. A number of additions based on discoveries made in the early nineteenth century make this 1819 version the most comprehensive and authoritative edition. Like the Neptune Oriental itself, the Instructions draws upon a wide range of sources to provide the most accurate information possible for navigating to the east. In addition to maps and published accounts by notable explorers, d'Après de Mannevillette used logbooks from company ships, first-hand testimony from officers, anecdotal accounts from sailors and a rich correspondence with Abbé Lacaille, Alexander Dalrymple and other respected geographers of the period. The Instructions was used to provide information for the East India Pilot published in London in 1782, an indispensable navigational resource that likewise passed into many editions. A few spots.

Original drawing captioned "M le curé d'Agana en petit negligé".

Guam: 1819. Original ink drawing, 310 x 245 mm., fully signed and dated, framed. Jacques Arago, artist on board the Uranie during the French circumnavigation of 1817-20, drew this intimate portrait of the priest in Agana, the capital of Guam, during the visit there of the Uranie expedition between March and June 1819. This is a charming and unusual portrait of a figure who likely expected to be taken more seriously: the cleric is shown in his "at home" attire, smoking. His relaxed stance, dressed in a vest and daringly striped leggings is further enriched by the addition of the most delicate slippers. Arago (1790-1855) was not only the most accomplished of the artists who made the voyage aboard the Uranie, but was one of the most intriguing of the early travellers. The wonders of the long expedition stayed with him for the rest of his life, and he continued writing and drawing about the Pacific right up until he lost his sight. In 1822 he published his own well-regarded account of the voyage, Promenade Autour du Monde, which was published in an English version in 1823. Over the ensuing decades he wrote many more differing versions of this interesting account. Arago was one of four famous brothers, three of whom were respected authors and artists (the fourth a general). The Freycinet expedition stayed for a long time in Agana where they were well received by the Spanish Governor Don Jose Medinilla. As several of the Uranie crew had recently died from dysentery, Louis de Freycinet took this opportunity to rest his men for several months. Here in the Marianas the Spanish missionaries were both powerful and respected and the sailors were required to attend holy week services. Arago was particularly known for his lively and arresting images of the people he encountered, with a distinct preference for the unusual or the grotesque. Whether the priest knew that Arago was drawing him at this intimate moment is not known, but as the drawing remained, unpublished, though fully signed and dated, in the archives of Captain Louis de Freycinet and his descendants it is more likely that Arago captured this image surreptitiously, and certainly the satirical tone of the caption - with its reference to the curé in his petit negligé - suggests that this delightful vision of the priest off his guard was not meant to be shared. Provenance: Until the 1960s in Freycinet family ownership, subsequently in a private collection. In fine original condition.

Kamilaroi, Dippel, and Turrubul: languages spoken by Australian Aborigines.Sydney, Thomas Richards (New South Wales government printer), 1866. 4to. With an armorial vignette printed in several colours and gold (the unofficial "Advance Australia" Australian coat of arms), 4 fine full-page wood engravings of plants and flowers. Original publisher's maroon textured cloth.

      - Ferguson 14914. First edition of grammars and vocabularies for three languages spoken by Australian Aborigines, compiled by William Ridley, professor at Sydney University and Minister of the Presbyterian Church of New South Wales. Ridley (1819-1878), an English missionary, came to Sydney in 1850. He wished to learn these languages in order to teach the Aborigines and carry out missionary work among them. Since the Aborigines had no written language, the present book forms a primary source for the languages as they existed more than 150 years ago, when they had had less contact with the Western world. He writes that he found these Aboriginal languages to posses a remarkable regularity and exactness, and that they "indicate an accuracy of thought, and a force of expression, surpassing all that is commonly supposed to be attainable by a savage race". In 1866 that was a remarkably progressive notion. He also adds some notes on Aboriginal names and customs. The book is nicely produced, with lovely wood engravings and interesting as an early example of Australian colour printing. The coat of arms is much like the earliest one known, which dates from 1821, but the third quarter shows a barrel and other goods rather than a harpoon and anchor. With library stamps (including a cancellation stamp) on the endpapers and blank parts of the title-page, and a paper label with manuscript shelf-mark on the binding. In very good condition. The spine is somewhat faded and there is minor damage to the board edges, but the binding is also very good.

[Attributes: First Edition]

Some thoughts upon liberty and the rights of Englishmen. By a lover of order.

London: sold by Butterworth and Son; and R. Hunter. 1819. 8vo., (2) + 75 + (1)pp., wanting the half-title, recently well bound in cloth, spine gilt lettered. A fine copy. First edition. Basil Montagu (1770-1851) is interesting. ODNB describes him succinctly as a 'author and legal reformer' but that hardly does him justice. The acknowledged son of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, and his mistress, Martha Ray, he led a pretty dissolute life until he was called to the bar in 1798. He thereafter seems to have taken life more seriously, became a legal expert on bankruptcy, publishing inter alia a massive Digest of Bankruptcy Laws> (1805-1807). In 1809 Samuel Romilly, William Allen and Basil Montagu formed the Society for the Diffusion of Knowledge upon the Punishment of Death and the Improvement of Prison Discipline, and in 1816 Montagu served with Allen, James Mill and David Ricardo on the committee tasked with looking into the increase in juvenile delinquency in London. The fact also that Montagu in his student years had been one of the earliest pupils of William Godwin, when he was greatly impressed by Godwin's Political Justice,> confirms his suitability to write about 'liberty and the rights of Englishmen'.
