Famiglie Celebri Italiane [Famous Italian Families] Count Pompeo Litta (1781 - 1852). Dispensa 159. Malatesta di Rimini, Parte I. Luigi Passerini. 1869 Dispensa 161. Malatesta di Rimini, Parte II. Luigi Passerini. 1869 Dispensa 162. Malatesta di Rimini, Parte III Ed Ultima. Luigi Passerini. 1870

Famiglie Celebri Italiane covers 150 families and runs to a total of 184 Dispensas which appeared from 1819 to 1883. Only the most notable of noble houses in Italy, those who were especially "famous", or distinguished in some way, were worthy of Litta's notice. His legacy is a fascinating insight into the military, political and ecclesiastical dynasties of Italy. At the time of Litta's death in 1852, only 113 Dispensa had been published. Luigi Passerini Orsini de 'Rilli, Federico Odorici and Federico Stefani collaborated to complete the series, with contributions by Francesco di Mauro of Polvica and Costantino Coda (although errors, such as the reversal of colours in coats of arms, occasionally occurred). In 1862, the rights and documents were transferred to Luciano Basadonna, who republished the whole work. Each genealogy (Tavola) is printed on double-leaf letterpress plates, versos blank (unless otherwise stated) and is inset with brief biographies of the most prominent characters of each of the family, together with other items of interest, such as famous portraits (some with tissue guards) and drawings of coins or medals. Some Dispensas include maps of territory owned or governed by the families. In some fascicles, there are also drawings of castles and other buildings, such as family monuments and tombs, many of which had already been destroyed at the time of publication; thus, these documents are also an important art historical record. The Malatesta family rose to prominence in the fourteenth century, when Malatesta da Verrucchio (died 1312) made himself master of Rimini by slaughtering his rivals. The family's lands were extended, sometimes by fair means (papal investitures) and sometimes by foul. Many of the family were notorious for their crimes and cruelty. One, Giovanni Malatesta, is known today for the murder, in 1285, of his wife, Francesca da Polenta, and her lover, his own brother Paolo: the crime being recorded in Dante's "Inferno". However, two of them were men of virtue: Carlo (died 1429), a staunch supporter of the Church, represented Gregory XII at the Council of Constance, whilst Galeotto Roberto (died 1432), became a Franciscan. Dispensa 159. Malatesta di Rimini, Parte I. Luigi Passerini. 1869. Contents: Tavola I - VII; Monumento e Quadri Malatestiani x 2 (black and white drawings of monuments; one with a tissue-guarded coloured image of a man and a woman). Dispensa 161. Malatesta di Rimini, Parte II. Luigi Passerini. 1869. Contents: Tavola VIII - XVI; Frammento di un Monumento e Ritratti Malatestiano (black and white drawings of tombs, with two tissue-guarded coloured portraits); Medaglie e Monete Malatestiane Dispensa 162. Malatesta di Rimini, Parte III Ed Ultima. Luigi Passerini. 1870. Contents: Tavola XVII - XXIV; Monumenti Malatestiani x 2 (black and white drawings of tombs, with a tissue-guarded coloured portrait). 49 cms tall x 35 cms (70 cms opened).

Two autograph letters signed, to William Tooke.

New Lanark & London: , 1819. 2 letters, quarto (leaf size: 227 x 185 mm). 5 pp. total. The first folded once, first page crosshatched, with integral address leaf. Loss to edge of second leaf of first letter from seal as usual, small traces of mount to address leaf of one and to verso of the other, both in excellent condition. Correspondence from Welsh social reformer Robert Owen to the politician and soon-to-be President of the Royal Society William Tooke. In the first, dated 14 November 1819, Owen speaks of the growing need for reform within the country and of his prior failure to act in full accordance with his beliefs: "to attain any great good I must act in complete unison with the principles which I have patiently advocated, which I [hold] to be true and which, if carried fairly into execution, cannot fail to give immediate and permanent relief to the working classes without injury to the higher ranks". He then explains that he has sent copies of a recently written address to the current Prime Minister, Lord Liverpool, several members of parliament and the Lord Chairman of the Committee in the hopes that it might be submitted to the government for serious consideration. In the second, he apologises for his late response to Tooke's previous letter: "my whole time from early to late has been slowly occupied with members of parliament and the House of Com. [sic] respecting two measures in which I feel a deep interest or your two kind and obliging notes should not have been so long unanswered". This may refer to the Cotton Mills and Factories Act of 1819, which Owen had originally drafted in 1815. The legislation placed restrictions on the working hours of children and ruled that no children under the age of nine were to be employed. At the close of his letter Owen reaffirms his plans to join Tooke later that day at his brother's house, the economist Thomas Tooke. One year later Owen would compose his most important work, the Report to the County of Lanark, in which he advocated that hours of work become "a superior form of exchange medium. Here Owen first proclaimed at length his belief that labour was the foundation of all value, a principle of immense importance to later socialist thought. The Report also offered a novel account of the relationship between money and the expansion and contraction of the market" (ODNB).

Published at the Request of the Family. 72pp. London: printed by James Powell, at the Manufactory for the Employment of the Deaf and Dumb, Fort Place, Bermondsey [1819]. 3. BOGUE (David). The Removal of an Eminently Wise and Good Man Lamented and Improved. A Sermon, Occasioned by the Death of Joseph Hardcastle, Esq. Treasurer of the London Missionary Society; Who Departed this Life on the third Day of March, 1819, in the Sixty-seventh Year of his Age. Preached at Surrey Chapel, Eighteenth of March, Before the Directors and other Friends on the Institution. Published at the Request of the Directors. 28pp. London: by J. Dennett, [1819] 4. PURKIS (Isaac). The Prospects of the Dying Christian: A Sermon Occasioned by the Death of Joseph Hardcastle, Esq. of Hatcham House, Near New Cross, Late Treasurer to the Missionary society; Preached at New Cross Chapel, March 14, 1819. 43, [1] pp. London: by John Hill for W. Whittemore, 1819 8vo. [215 x 133 x 16 mm]. Bound together in contemporary straight-grained blue goatskin, the covers with a border composed of a gilt triple fillet and a gilt and a blind roll, with an inner panel of two gilt fillets with a blind roll in between and gilt foliate and floral tools at the outer corners, enclosing a lozenge-shaped centre built up with foliate and floral tools. The spine divided into five panels, with gilt tooled bands, the upper panel tooled with the Hardcastle crest, the others with various foliate tools, the corners of the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt roll, blue silk endleaves and doublures with a border composed of a repeated gilt foliate tool and a blind roll, gilt edges. (Expertly refurbished where rubbed). The fourth item has a number of manuscript corrections. They are all in good condition and the binding is most attractive, especially with the silk inside. The crest on the spine indicates that it is a family copy, probably belonging to one of Hardcastle's nine children (four daughters and three sons survived into adulthood). Joseph Hardcastle (1752-1819) was a merchant and evangelical activist with an entry in DNB. In 1791 the Sierra Leone Company was established to protect native Africans from slave dealers and Hardcastle was appointed a director, along with William Wilberforce. He corresponded over several years with Wilberforce on matters relating to slavery and put on a display of the instruments of cruelty used on the slave ships at his house at Hatcham. In 1795 he helped to found the London Missionary Society and was elected its first treasurer, and in 1804 he became a member of the first committee of the British and Foreign Bible Society. He is said to have supported seventeen evangelical and philanthropic organisations, and was a generous benefactor to numerous deserving causes. [Attributes: First Edition]

Dispensa 157. Mocenigo di Venezia. Cavaliere Federigo Stefani. Parte I. 1868. Contents: Tavola I - V, with coloured coat of arms on Tavola I; Nota, by Federico Odorici; Monete, Oselle, Bolle e Medaglie Mocenigo x 3 (black and white images of coins and medals; the third sheet has a tissue guard over three coloured portraits of family members).         Le Antichità Romane, ossia raccolta delle piu interessanti vedute di Roma antica [WITH] Le Antichita dei contorni di Roma.

Rome For the Author and Vincenzo Poggioli -1823 but 1829 and 1824-6 1819 - Two volumes. Landscape folio (54 by 74cm). I. 101 plates by and after Rossini, without letterpress title; II. letterpress title, preface, table of contents, 73 engraved plates; plates bright and clean. Uniform contemporary half vellum gilt, blue marbled boards, spine in six compartments with raised bands, morocco lettering piece, gilt. A fine set. An excellent set of this outstanding collection of views of Roman antiquities by the famous engraver Luigi Rossini. "The mantle of Piranesi fell on Luigi Rossini. His plates have strength, especially in dealing with masses of dark masonry" (A.M. Hind, A History of Engraving & Etching, p.232). Rossini (1790-1857) trained as an architect in Bologna but after moving to Rome in 1814, his financial situation deteriorated and he was forced to change career and become a professional artist and etcher. His depictions of the monumental aspect of the architecture of Rome, its bridges, pillars, arches and vaults, often overgrown, show echoes of his illustrious predecessor Piranesi. Le Antichità Romane was produced in collaboration with Bartolomeo Pinelli, who supplied the costumed figures which enliven Rossini's architectonic and archaeological views, and seems to have been first issued in 1823 as titled below the frontispiece ("Frontespizio delle Antichita Romane. Divise in cento Tavole"). It was reprinted in 1829 as Le Antichità Romane, ossia raccolta delle piu interessanti vedute di Roma Antica, but letterpress title-pages appear elusive for both editions. This copy is uniformly bound with the first edition of Rossini's volume on the Roman countryside. Millard, Italian, 116; Berlin Cat. 1917; RIBA, Early printed books, 2847 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Zweite Auflage. Richard Haehl.         A Voyage of discovery, made under the orders of the Admiralty, in His Majesty's Ships Isabella and Alexander, for the purpose of exploring Baffin's Bay and inquiring into the probability of a North-West Passage.

John Murray London 1819 - First edition. 4to., xl, 252, cxliv pp., 7 maps and charts (6 folding), and 25 aquatint or engraved plates and coastal profiles (15 coloured and 7 folding), period calf-backed marbled boards, raised bands, gilt spines, marbled endpapers. Several plates foxed, a few creases from misfolds, some offsetting to folding plates and to title, bindings rubbed, edgewear. First edition of Ross's famous first voyage. Ross, along with William Parry, James Clark Ross, and Edward Sabine (who would all become famous explorers in their own right) attempted on their journey to proceed westward through Lancaster Sound. Deceived, quite possibly by a mirage, Ross described the passage as barred by a mountain range that he named the Croker Mountains. He then returned to England, losing his only possibility of penetrating the Northwest passage. His observations were initially accepted as conclusive, and he was promoted to post rank on 7 December 1818. Controversy would soon follow, as Sir John Barrow, furious that the attempt to find the open polar sea had failed, vented his anger in person to Ross, and the Admiralty, having learned that there were some doubts as to the existence of the Croker Mountains, dispatched another expedition under the command of Parry. Edward Sabine, in his account of the voyage, claimed that Ross was the only person to have seen the Croker Mountains and that he had misrepresented some scientific results of the voyage. Parry's return in 1820 brought further proof that Ross's assertions had been incorrect, and, despite his willingness to make another voyage, Ross was not given another opportunity to lead an Arctic expedition until 1829.         MEMOIRES POUR SERVIR A LA VIE D UN HOMME CELEBRE Complet 1819 NAPOLEON Rare

Description of a new or improved method of constructing wheel-carriages; to which are prefixed, some observations on wheel carriages in general.

Liverpool: printed by G.F. Harris's widow and brothers. 1819. 8vo., double-page engraved folding plate with 9 figures, 41 + (1)pp., with an author's advertisement slip tipped in before the text and with an errata leaf tipped in at the end, well bound in modern half calf, spine lettered in gilt. A fine copy. First, and apparently only, edition. The author seems to have been a Liverpool businessman who also published essays on gold bullion and banknotes. He describes himself as 'an obscure individual, neither a mechanic by profession, nor immediately connected with any of the various branches of agriculture, commerce, or communication wherein these vehicles [i.e. wheel carriages] are employed.' The essay is in fact a detailed specification, with engraved drawings, of Koster's patented designs for his 'New or Improved Method' which essentially involved shifting the weight of the body of the vehicle from between the wheels to the extremities of the axle-tree outside the wheels. In his advertisement slip, Koster announced that he was 'willing to treat with coach-makers, wheelwrights, builders of carts, waggons, &c. for the patent-right of constructing carriages according to his plan, in any particular county or district; or he will grant licences for building one or more carriages, to noblemen, gentlemen, farmers, coach-proprietors, carriers, &c. on very moderate terms, at his house in Liverpool, or by letters'.
