Adams assistette cos? a molte operazioni oftalmiche e dopo qualche anno divenne chirurgo a Exeter. ? ITA

Letter to Viscount Sidmouth ... on the Transportation Laws, the State of the Hulks, and of the Colonies in New South Wales

London: J. Ridgway, 1819. Octavo, bound with the half-title, often lacking, folding table, 137pp.; a fine copy, in traditional half calf, spine gilt-lettered, the Hobill Cole copy with his bookplate and with the blind stamps of Tom Ramsay and Fred C. Eager. Scarce first edition of Bennet's scathing attack on the convict system under Governor Macquarie. This work is one of the more significant contemporary accounts of convict discipline, and is considered an essential document of the Macquarie era, not least as it prompted Macquarie's own response.Henry Bennet (1777-1836) was a British parliamentarian who began a crusade for penitentiary reform that culminated in 1816. His "efforts 'to diminish the sum of human misery' adorn the history of English criminal law. No retributory institution, prison, hulk, penal colony, or penitentiary adequately combined punishment with reformation: he and his select committees exposed them, but to little avail" (ODB). The scope of his inquiry was both broad and enlightened, and included the conflation of political prisoners with felons and the plight of insane persons. Nor surprisingly, the penal colony at New South Wales was attacked as a dumping ground. Bennet writes in his Letter to Viscount Sidmouth 'to get rid of the miserable objects of legal punishment constituted the sole occupation of these administrators of our penal law; and when the grave closed on some, and the distance of half the globe prevented the cries of the others of the victims we banished from our shores from being heard in England, these artificers of death, moral and physical, were satisfied the law had taken its course...'Bennet was manipulated and sometimes misinformed by enemies of Macquarie (including the sanctimonious and vitriolic 'flogging parson' Samuel Marsden). Nonetheless, his Letter to Viscount Sidmouth reflects deep contemporary concern with the problematic role of New South Wales as a place of both punishment and reform.A fine copy from notable Australian collections. Ferguson, 731; Australian Rare Books, 42.

New-York: for the Author, by Kirk & Mercein, 1819. 8vo, original blue boards, rebacked, with original backstrip label laid down. 228, i-[lx], [10], lxi-lxiii pp. Three folding maps, one colored in outline, inevitable foxing, but a very good, untrimmed copy. First Edition. A complicated book, as the maps may number one or three and be colored or uncolored; and there may or may not be an errata slip. This copy lacks the latter, although pp. 7-8, "To the Reader, " contains numerous corrections of errata. In this copy the index is bound between "Addenda no. III" and "Addenda no. IV." As the book's very long title makes clear, Darby -- a surveyor and geographer -- was obsessive about including every detail that pertained to his travels. This copy bears on the title-page the stamp of " J. S. Skinner. / 1832, " surely referring to the eminent sporting and agricultural writer John Stuart Skinner (for whom see DAB). Bradford 1193.         LE LANGAGE DES FLEURS.

Audot: Paris:, n.d. ca.1819. Paris: Audot n.d. ca.1819. First edition. Louise Cortambert's LE LANGAGE DES FLEURS is popularly regarded as the first Western book on the language of flowers. Although there were, in fact, earlier works on floral symbolism and flower-based languages, Cortambert's was by far the most popular and became the source for many, if not most, of the numerous later works on the same subject. It was published in 1819 under the pseudonym of Charlotte de Latour, and its true authorship remained unsettled for many years. "The illustrations to Le Langage des Fleurs constitute one of the chief sources of its charm. The original drawings were prepared by a floral artist of considerable renown, Pancrace Bessa," (Lucia Tomasi, AN OAK SPRING FLORA, pg. 366). Bessa was a student of Redouté and achieved a reputation as the foremost painter of miniature botanical illustrations in his day. These hand-colored plates - a frontispiece and one plate for each month of the year - depict from one to three individual flowers above engraved captions giving their name and associated sentiment or virtue. The text is arranged by seasons. Sections for each month of the year are further divided into chapters devoted to the appropriate flowers, their lore and meaning.

[5] ff., 55, [1 (blank)] pp.. 1819 Juan Bautista Muñoz (1745–99, with death by apoplexy) was Charles III's official chronicler of New World. . . ", Memorias de la Real Academia de la Historia, V (1817), 204–24 — Muñoz => denied the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe, calling it merely the illusion of a "mere Indian." The cult of the Virgin of Guadalupe was so important to Mexicans of all classes and political persuasions that a spirited defense was assured; and Gómez Marín, a distinguished poet, naturalist, and religious writer, provides one here. Removed from a nonce volume. Title-leaf soiled and slightly foxed; upper inner corner of all leaves rodent gnawed with small loss of paper, not touching text. Two small pin-type wormholes penetrating from back toward front of volume, stopping on p. 13; some bug-spotting on last blank leaf. One leaf unaccountably browned. Not a fine copy, certainly; definitely, one priced for its faults.

The Christian Advocate by a Tennesseean [sic]

Nashville, (TN): Printed and sold by Thomas G. Bradford, 1819. 8vo. vi, [5]-357 pp. Folding plate (separated at fold, as usual, with the loss of a few letters along the separation). Original calf-backed boards (rubbed); except for the defect mentioned, a quite pleasing untrimmed copy of a very rare frontier book. First edition. Howes H-357: "Largely devoted to Indian antiquities; supports a Caucasian origin of our aborigines." American Imprints 48197. Allen Tennessee Imprints 393. Allen Some Tennessee Rarities 23: "Rarest of Haywood's three well-known historical works. This book is often called the first edition of his Natural and Aboriginal History of Tennessee; much of the material which appears in the later work was contained in the earlier Christian Advocate, and must be considered therefore as the earliest work printed within the state relative to the aboriginal history of the area. Copies of the Christian Advocate are virtually never offered for sale, and when they infrequently appear the price is justifiably considerable to this Tennessee rarity." Horn Twenty Tennessee Books 3: "Judge Haywood attempts to show that the aboriginal inhabitants of American emigrated from Asia, and this theory he supports with a variety of facts and statements gleaned from early inhabitants of Tennessee regarding the Indians and their traditions as to those who lived here before them … this is an excessively rare book, and seldom offered for sale." McMurtrie Early Printing in Tennessee 166. Siebert sale 364: "Devoted largely to a study of Indian antiquities … the rarest of Haywood's books, not in Field or Sabin." RARE. We are unaware of copies other that of Siebert appearing on the market in recent years; like this copy and two others that we have examined, the plate in the Siebert copy was separated along the crease, apparently as the fold extended slightly beyond the edges of the other leaves, thus being prone to wear. OCLC records 14 copies, including six in Tennessee institutions; McMurtrie, Allen, and American Imprints add three more locations.

Autograph letter signed, concerning the lunar method for calculating longitude

N.P. [?Paris], 1819. Manuscript letter, 231 x 186 mm., on a bifolium sheet, letter comprising first page with three blank pages, dated and signed by Rossel, slightly chipped but fine. D'Entrecasteaux's successor on longitude. Rossel, astronomer of the expedition in search of La Pérouse, writes to Louis Marie Bajot, inspector-general of the library of the Ministry of the Marine and editor of the Annales Maritimes et Coloniales, who had asked Rossel to review some articles on the lunar method. Rossel reports that the method was unsatisfactory and should be abandoned since the difficulty of accurately measuring the height of the moon is too great and liable to "grandes erreurs".Rossel joined the Recherche at the age of 26, one of the vessels under the command of Bruni d'Entrecasteaux dispatched in 1791 to solve the mystery of La Pérouse. The d'Entrecasteaux expedition was remarkable for its talented scientific members, including the naturalist Jacques Labillardière, hydrographer Charles-François Beautemps-Beaupré and astronomer Ambroise Pierson. Although differences in social origin and political allegiance proved a source of ongoing tension amongst the officers, overall the scientists worked co-operatively. The practical application of astronomy to navigation was an important one for these men, and during their stay in Tasmania Rossel constructed a temporary observatory for this purpose. Some years later, Rossel took on the editing of the official voyage account which was published in 1808, eight years after Labillardiere's account. In the official account the subject of longitude is treated in detail, forming a valuable explanatory text on the limitations of astronomical and lunar methods: "Rossel devoted the whole of the second volume of the official Voyage to an exposition of the methods used by himself and others in taking and correcting astronomical observations made during the voyage, together with detailed tables setting out the resulting calculations of latitude and longitude. By this means, he hoped, readers would be able to judge for themselves the probable accuracy of these estimates, especially those of longitude. Like Beautemps-Beaupré's appendix to the first volume, this became a kind of instructional treatise on the subject" (Horner, Looking for La Pérouse, p.41).Furthermore, in preparing material for the press Rossel cross-referenced the results with observations taken at Greenwich and supplied by the Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne. The intention was to produce longitude bearings more accurate than those of Captain Cook, which had remained the benchmark of navigational accuracy. This letter reflects Rossel's experience reconciling the sciences of astronomy and navigation, and the high regard accorded by his peers. By this stage the use of marine chronometers was gaining widespread acceptance for longitude calculation as the lunar method became obsolete.

The Works of Lord Byron [ Fore-edge paintings ]

London: John Murray 1819. Three volumes. An early collected edition in original full straight grained morocco bindings, gilt and blind decorated with leather turned over on to the front pastedowns, also with gilt and blind decoration. All edges are gilt, endpapers are silk and there is a silk inlay on pastdowns creating 'panels'. Each volume has a beautiful early fore-edge painting of a different Italian scene. They look to have been applied after the gilding. A wonderful example in a fine binding that is just a little rubbed and creased. Very good. . Very Good. Full Morocco. 1819. 8vo..
