Wilhelm Meyerheim (1815 Danzig-Berlin 1882). Preussens Königspaa, Litho

      - Wilhelm GEORGY (1819 Magdeburg-Weimar 1887), Gotische Kirchenruine, Bleistift -- Technik: -- Bleistift mit Weißhöhung auf Papier, unten rechts signiert: "W. Georgy". -- [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Historic, Military, and Naval Anecdotes,

1819. first edition. First Edition, Earliest Issue"A Handsome Volume" (Prideaux)ORME, Edward. Historic, Military, and Naval Anecdotes, Of Personal Valour, Bravery, and particular Incidents which occurred to the Armies of Great Britian and her Allies, in the last long-contested War, terminating with the Battle of Waterloo. Under the Patronage of, and Dedicated with Permission to His Royal Highness the Commander in Chief. London: Edited and Published by, and engraved under the direction of Edward Orme, 1819. First Edition, earliest issue and complete, with the plates watermarked "Whatman 1812" and "Whatman 1816," and the text watermarked "Whatman 1812. A scarce tall copy of the first issue, lacking rules to title-page and with "1819" at title-page foot. Folio (13 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches; 343 x 267 mm.). [4], 94, [4] pp. Forty hand-colored aquatint plates, chiefly by Dubourg after Atkinson, Manskirsch, J.H. Clark, W. Heath, G. Scharf, Dubourg and Rigaud. Some light offsetting from the plates onto the text, occasional pale, mainly marginal spotting, a little heavier at the end.Contemporary full straight-grained maroon morocco with gilt decorated border and inner blind-stamped frame. Smooth spine with gilt decorated compartments and gilt rules and lettering. Decorative gilt-ruled turn-ins. All edges gilt, yellow coated endpapers. With the bookplate of Joel Spitz on the front paste-down. Lower joint very slightly cracked but firm. A near fine copy. Housed in a fleece-lined red buckram slipcase. Provenance: acquired at Parke-Bernet, 1944. In his address to the reader, Orme describes his patriotic aim as being "to see recorded and embellished by the Fine Arts, those particular exploits of personal valour -- together with their attendant dangers, difficulties, and privations, the surmounting of which has shed a lustre upon the British Name, unexampled in the history of former ages." While well-represented at auction, this appears to be the only copy to come to market within the last thirty-six years to possess the earliest recorded watermarks and in tall format."A handsome volume... nor could one desire a finer record of heroic deeds" (Prideaux)"There is another issue of the book recognizable by two rules below 'Battle of Waterloo' on the title, and without the date at the foot. According to Tooley the undated issue carries text paged to '98,' and the dated only to page '94.' This is incorrect, all 98 pages being present in complete copies, but it should be noted that pages 95 to 98 are without pagination in the dated issue."Coupled with the fact that dated copies carry early watermarks and that the undated ones do not, it would appear reasonable to assume that the early state of the book had dated title-page such as the above" (Abbey).Tooley 353. Abbey, Life 376. Prideaux. p. 224.

Letter to Viscount Sidmouth . on the Transportation Laws, the State of the Hulks, and of the Colonies in New South Wales

      J. Ridgway, London 1819 - Octavo, bound with the half-title, often lacking, folding table, 137pp.; a fine copy, in traditional half calf, spine gilt-lettered, the Hobill Cole copy with his bookplate and with the blind stamps of Tom Ramsay and Fred C. Eager. Scarce first edition of Bennet's scathing attack on the convict system under Governor Macquarie. This work is one of the more significant contemporary accounts of convict discipline, and is considered an essential document of the Macquarie era, not least as it prompted Macquarie's own response.Henry Bennet (1777-1836) was a British parliamentarian who began a crusade for penitentiary reform that culminated in 1816. His "efforts 'to diminish the sum of human misery' adorn the history of English criminal law. No retributory institution, prison, hulk, penal colony, or penitentiary adequately combined punishment with reformation: he and his select committees exposed them, but to little avail" (ODB). The scope of his inquiry was both broad and enlightened, and included the conflation of political prisoners with felons and the plight of insane persons. Nor surprisingly, the penal colony at New South Wales was attacked as a dumping ground. Bennet writes in his Letter to Viscount Sidmouth 'to get rid of the miserable objects of legal punishment constituted the sole occupation of these administrators of our penal law; and when the grave closed on some, and the distance of half the globe prevented the cries of the others of the victims we banished from our shores from being heard in England, these artificers of death, moral and physical, were satisfied the law had taken its course?'Bennet was manipulated and sometimes misinformed by enemies of Macquarie (including the sanctimonious and vitriolic 'flogging parson' Samuel Marsden). Nonetheless, his Letter to Viscount Sidmouth reflects deep contemporary concern with the problematic role of New South Wales as a place of both punishment and reform.A fine copy from notable Australian collections.         Original watercolour painting depicting a dolphin (Dauphin Rhinoceros)

At sea: aboard the "Uranie", 1819. In fine original condition.. Watercolour, 245 x 305 mm., framed. Fine original watercolour by Louis de Freycinet's expedition artist Jacques Arago. It is signed and dated lower right, and there is the customary Arago line border in pen; a reference to the official published work "Voyage de l'Uranie, Poissons, pl.13" appears to the left. The scientific atlases that are part of the official account of the Uranie voyage are splendid. The natural history specimens recorded and collected on this voyage were extensive and forty-five of the birds (among which were three new genera), more than thirty reptiles and perhaps one hundred and twenty fish were entirely new to science.Jacques Arago (1790-1855) joined the Freycinet expedition on the Uranie in 1817 and was not only the most accomplished of the artists who made the voyage, but was one of the most intriguing of all the early voyagers. The wonders of the long expedition from 1817-1820 stayed with him for the rest of his life, and he continued writing and drawing about the Pacific right up until he lost his sight. In 1822 he published his own well-regarded account of the voyage, "Promenade Autour du Monde" which was translated into English and published in 1823. Over the ensuing decades he wrote many more differing versions of this interesting account. The date of 1819 on this watercolour identifies that it was drawn by Jacques Arago during the passage from the Caroline Islands via the Marianas to the Sandwich Islands; the Uranie arrived in Kealakekua Bay in Hawaii on 8 August and stayed in the islands for a month before setting out for Sydney, where they arrived on 18 November, staying until Christmas. The richness of the marine discoveries made by the scientists and artists over the long voyage ensured that the atlas of these discoveries, prepared by Freycinet after the expedition's return to France, remains one of the most beautiful of all Pacific illustrated books. Provenance: until the 1960s in Freycinet family ownership, subsequently in a private collection.

        SCOTIA DEPICTA

Printed by J. McCreery for H. R. Young, London 1819 - The Longest Fore-Edge Painting We Have Ever Seen. 432 x 286 mm (17 x 11 1/4"). [51] leaves (lacking half-title leaf). Contemporary burgundy straight-grain morocco, covers with multiple borders intricately rolled in gilt and blind, gilt-decorated raised bands, spine panels elaborately tooled in gilt, gilt-rolled turn-ins, all edges gilt. Front joint and hinge and upper corners repaired with some (though not consummate) skill. WITH AN IMPRESSIVE FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF EDINBURGH. With engraved frontispiece, one tailpiece vignette and 48 plates etched by James Fittler from drawings by John Claude Nattes. Front pastedown with two bookplates of the important Pittsburgh insurance executive William McGill Duff (1878-1949) and a card inscribed to him from Edward A. Woods dated 22 Dec. 1925. Title signed and dated 1820 on upper margin by original owner, Hugh Booth. Avery Library, p. 339. Rear joint with five-inch crack at head (though the board still firmly attached), the binding with significant wear and soiling, variable (never severe) offsetting from images to text leaves, a few plates with light foxing to margins, other minor defects; obviously with condition issues, but the volume redeemed by its very unusual, well-preserved, and quite pleasing fore-edge painting. Even with its warts and freckles, this is a volume of particular appeal, first for its topographical content and especially for its memorably vast painting. The scene on the fore edge is a very skillfully painted view of Edinburgh looking south from Craigleith, the composition being especially remarkable because of the sweeping impression of the location that it communicates. This results, of course, because of the extraordinary width of the fore-edge space allotted to the artist: at 16 1/2 inches (430 mm.) from end to end, this is the broadest fore-edge painting we've ever seen. The painting also has considerable depth, with two herders and their cows in the right foreground, outcroppings of rock (for which Craigleith is famous) in the left foreground, and Edinburgh far in the distance, its commanding castle seeming to touch the sky many miles away. Given the colors used (copper orange in the trees, for example), the puffy treatment of the clouds, and the dabbing style with which the paint has been applied, this is almost certainly the work of the so-called "Dover Painter," who is described at length in the previous item. Our view is based upon Thomas H. Shepherd's drawing "Edinburgh from Craigleith," engraved by W. Tombleson, which originally appeared in John Britton's 1829 "Modern Athens." Initially published in 1804, Fittler's work is an illustrated celebration of Scotland's most interesting antiquities, castles, towns, and picturesque scenery, with scenes being drawn using a wide, impressionistic pen. Bryan notes that Fittler (1758-1835) "entered the schools of the Royal Academy in 1778, and was elected an Associate Engraver in 1800. He distinguished himself by numerous works after English and foreign masters, of different subjects and character; and book illustrations by him abound." Fore-edge paintings of this size and quality, however, do not. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Essay on English poetry

John Murray, London 1819 - First separate edition and one of only three copies printed, imperial octavo (28cm.), pp. [4], 271, [1]; contemporary and probably original burgundy full straight-grain morocco by Charles Murton, floriated blind- tooled borders on both covers enclosing a single gilt rule with fleurons in the corners, elaborate gilt decorated spine in six compartments, gilt- lettered direct in one, a.e.g.; slightest rubbing; near fine. This essay was prefixed to the first volume of Campbell's 7-volume edition of Specimens of the English Poets (London, 1819), which Lowndes calls "a much esteemed collection." There was no other edition in England of this essay, save these three printed on large paper, but it was reprinted in a meager octavo in Boston later the same year. Not found in NCBEL, OCLC or the British Museum Catalogue. NUC records a London octavo, 1819, at Boston Public but this is likely an error as a search of the Boston Public on- line database turns up no such record. In a new cloth clamshell box with a morocco label. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Autograph Letter Signed

Oxford, n.d. [1870s?]. Very Good. A fine unpublished two-page letter from John Ruskin to Albert Goodwin, a close friend and one of his proteges. Ruskin (1819-1900) was the most famous art critic of the Victorian era, and was himself a patron of the arts and an artist. He championed the work of many young artists, most notably the Pre-Raphaelites. Albert Goodwin (1845-1932) became a renowned landscape painter whose work was influenced by Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites. The letter was sent from Oxford at some time during Ruskin's tenure as a professor of fine art there. He writes to Mr. Goodwin: "your drawing is very beautiful and worth much more than your price - and I have little doubt I can easily sell if for you for 50 [pounds] but - and this is the reason I've not answered till now, there are faults in it which I think you know (perhaps not [?] of perspective, as this [here he sketches a small pot] instead of [another pot drawing] of the holy water pot nearly on horizontal line) such as the blundered [?] dog, [?] arabesque - and liot curls of [?] hair, which prevent my buying if for the Guild. - but this criticism being to you privatey. I can commend so much that I can perfectly ask 50 [pounds] for it on condition of an alteration or two. Will you please lend it me till the 4th Nov.? I want to have it at my lecture on Saturday week. Ever gratefully yrs J Ruskin." Written on light grey folded note paper with printed address at top. 4.5 x 7 inches. Light crease where folded. Very good condition. ALS/052115.

        Pencil drawing of Wat Tyler

1819. BLAKE, William.Pencil drawing of Wat Tyler, with inscription in the hand of John Varley: "Wat Tyler By Wm Blake, from his Spectre, as in the act of striking the Tax Gatherer on the head, drawn Octr 30, 1819, 1h AM." (London, October 30, 1819).An extraordinary original pencil drawing by William Blake from his famous "Visionary Heads" series, depicting Wat Tyler, leader of the 1381 Peasants?' Revolt. The drawing is inscribed by John Varley, Blake's close friend and companion, identifying the subject and date of composition, October 30, 1819, at 1 a.m. This is one of the earliest of Blake?'s dated ?"Visionary Heads?" drawings. During the final years of his life, Blake gathered around him a circle of friends and disciples which included John Varley, a landscape painter and astrologer. Varley was Blake's constant companion from their meeting in 1819 until the poet's death in 1827. It was for Varley that Blake undertook one of his most unusual series of drawings, the "Visionary Heads." Varley, "who gave a very materialistic interpretation to Blake's visionary power, would sit by [Blake] far into the night and say 'Draw me Moses' or 'Julius Caesar,' straining his own eyes in the hope of seeing what Blake saw, who would answer 'There he is,' and draw with alacrity, looking up from time to time as if he had a flesh-and-blood sitter before him, sometimes suddenly leaving off and remarking, 'I can't go on, it is gone,' or 'it has moved, the mouth is gone.' Thus were produced the famous 'Visionary Heads,' or 'Spiritual Portraits'—some forty or fifty slight pencil sketches, all original, many full of character and power… The original drawings all passed into the hands of Mr. Linnell [Blake's friend and patron during his last years]. Blake was wont to say to his friends respecting these 'visions,' 'You can see what I do if you choose. Work up imagination to the state of vision, and the thing is done'" (DNB II, 645). Of the series, the "Ghost of a Flea" is perhaps the most famous, and Varley's account of its creation is illustrative of the process by which the sketches were produced: "I felt convinced by [Blake's] mode of proceeding, that he had a real image before him, for he left off, and began on another part of the paper, to make a separate drawing of the mouth of the Flea, which the spirit having opened, he was prevented from proceeding with the first sketch, till he had closed it. During the time occupied in completing the drawing, the Flea told him that all fleas were inhabited by the souls of such men, as were by nature blood-thirsty to excess" (Butlin 503). Most of the drawings were done in 1819 and 1820 at Varley's house in the evenings, but at least one was done in Blake's front room at Fountain Court. The Wat Tyler drawing here offered (Butlin 737) is most likely the original version of this composition, as Butlin notes, "heavily gone over in the process of making the replica." Varley and Linnell made replicas and counterproofs of this and other "Visionary Heads," but this is presumed to be Blake's original drawing. It is one of the earliest dated "Visionary Heads," one of only five dated October 1819 (the earliest is October 14th, this is October 30th). This portrait of Wat Tyler is "powerful and expressive… Tyler is clear-eyed and focused, his mouth in articulate anger, his brows elegant, his neck strong, his hair curling like flames" (Linebaugh, p. 178). "At these singular nocturnal sittings Blake thus executed for Varley, in the latter's presence, some forty or fifty slight pencil sketches, of small size, of historical, nay, fabulous and even typical personages, summoned from the vast deep of time, and 'seen in vision by Mr. Blake.' Varley, who accepted all Blake said of them, added in writing the names, and in a few instances the day and hour they were seen [as with Wat Tyler]… Remarkable performances these slight pencil drawings are, intrinsically, as well as for the circumstances of their production: truly original and often sublime. All are marked by a decisive, portrait-like character, and are in fact, evidently, literal portraits of what Blake's imaginative eye beheld" (Gilchrist I, 301). Wat Tyler was the most famous leader of the 1381 Peasants' Revolt against Richard II's poll tax, England's first great popular rebellion. "Tyler is popularly supposed to have given the signal for the rising by killing a collector of the poll tax who indecently assaulted his daughter" (Oxford DNB Online). Tyler and his rebels entered London, and on June 15, 1381 the mayor summoned Tyler to speak with the king. Tyler "dismounted, and halfbending, shook the king's hand heartily, saying 'Brother, be of good comfort and joyful…' Tyler then outlined his demands: no law except the 'law of Winchester'; no outlawry;… the abolition of villeinage and serfdom. Richard said that he would grant all he could fairly grant… Exactly what happened next is uncertain. It seems as if there was a deliberate attempt to pick a fight with Tyler." Tyler was attacked and publicly executed, and the king revoked his promises and suppressed the revolt. Tyler became a popular subject for artists and writers in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, such as Thomas Paine, Edmund Burke, and poet Robert Southey. "During the French Revolution… Tyler became a reference point for both defenders and opponents of radicalism" (Vanden Bossche, p. 37). Gilchrist I, 252. Rossetti, 244. Blake Collection of George C. Smith, 1927 No. 47. Bentley Blake Records, 264. Butlin, The Paintings and Drawings of William Blake 737. Seven mounting tags on recto, at one time matted with some light browning and spotting along edges, else fine. Handsomely framed. A rare and wonderful piece; Blake drawings rarely appear on the market, and this item, relatively large and in exceptionally fine condition, is quite extraordinary.

Asseerghur. A contemporary manuscript account of the capture Asseerghur comprising 52pp of folio reports on events, orders, etc dated between 17th March and 8th April 1819, the final page signed by Brig Gen Sir John Malcom "John Malcolm, B.L."

Asseerghur, India 1819 - Assighur. A contemporary manuscript account of the capture Assighur comprising 52pp of folio reports on events, orders, etc dated between 17th March and 8th April 1819, the final page signed by Brig Gen Sir John Malcom "John Malcolm, B.L." The account begins on Wednesday 17th March 1819 "All attempts towards an amicable adjustment having ceased this day at 1o'clock P.M. orders to the following effect were issued by Brig General Doveton". The left margin of this first page has a list of the troops to be involved divided into Column of Attack [5 Comps Royal Scots, Flank Comps of 30th, 37th, & Ms Eu Regt, 5 Comps of 1st Bn 12th Foot, Corps of Sappers & Miners] and Column of Reserve [larger number of infantry and 1 Sqn 7th Cavalry, 2 Brigades H Arty, Detachment 2nd Cav.]. The first 10 pages are numbered but from 25th March 1819 the pages are not numbered but written in the dame secretarial hand. As an example of the degree of detail recorded that day, a Friday, begins "During the day fired 131 Shells into the upper fort with good effect, and two 18prs , seventeen 12 & fifty one 6pr shots at the defences. The Pioneers and Publick followers employed in collecting materials for erecting a new battery to the Southward and an 18pr & 12pr to make a second breach in the lower fort and fire at its defences. The 2nd Bn 6th M.N.I. ordered to march to a Position in the Batteekainee Nullah for the Protection of the new batteries to the southwards and 3 Troops of the 3rd M.L. Cavalry tomorrow morning at two o'clock the whole under Lieut. Col. Russell". Further lists of troops involved appear in the left margin [as is the general practice in military orders throughout the Company period]. There are some copies of Malcolm's letters to Brig Gen Doveton these marked "(signed John Malcolm B. Gl." This very interesting and readable account of the proceedings have all the appeal of immediate reporting and the signature of John Malcom himself at the conclusion gives them the authenticity which copied documents sometimes lack. The pages have all been folded and in places there are tears without loss but the paper watermarked Golding & Snelgrove 1816 or 1817 and KG 1816] is in sound condition. A good general account of this action will be found in "The Summary of the Mahratta and Pindaree Campaign, during 1817, 1818, and 1819" [National Army Museum, ISBN 1-845747-36-4] Size: Folio
