        Mazeppa

London: John Murray, 1819. First edition, first issue, with imprint on p. [70]. Half title present. 69, [3] pp. + [8] pp ads dated July, 1819. 1 vols. 8vo. Original drab gray wrappers, uncut. Some chips from spine, slightly cocked, but internally quite clean. Very good. Byron's Heroic Poem "Mazeppa" was Byron's heroic poem on the life and adventures of Ivan Stefanovitch Mazeppa. Using Voltaire's "Charles XII" as a basis, Byron has his Mazeppa describe to Charles XII of Sweden his life. He explains why after being ennobled and well-treated by Peter the Great, he chose to change sides mid-battle when Charles XII invaded Russia. The "Fragment" at the back was Byron's contribution to that famous party in Switzerland in response to his "We will each write a ghost story." The best known of these of course being Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein".

Picturesque scenery in the Holy Land and Syria, delineated during the campaigns of 1799 and 1800. Second edition.

London, B. R. Howlett for Thomas McLean, 1819. - Folio (500 x 350 mm). IV, 42 pp. With 19 aquatints by Edward Orme after sketches by Spilsbury in original hand colour. Contemp. half cloth with red boards and printed label to upper cover. Second edition of English naval surgeon Francis Spilsbury’s account of his travels in the Holy Land and Syria during the Napoleonic campaigns there, with 19 finely hand-colored folio aquatint views. Spilsbury was surgeon on board HMS Tigre during the campaigns of 1799 and 1800. The Tigre brought Sir William Sidney Smith to defend Acre against Napoleon’s siege, and led a naval force in support of Turkish armies which finally relieved Acre, and his text gives some account of the military campaigns and the Turkish dignitaries. In his reminiscences Napoleon accused Smith of making him miss his destiny, as Smith’s timely appearance thwarted Napoleon’s drive to invade Syria and forced him to retreat to Egypt. The views are mostly connected with the coastal towns of modern Lebanon and Israel, though several are from Spilsbury’s travels inland to meet the Grand Vizier in charge of the Turkish army, Jezzar Pacha, and other dignitaries. First published in folio in 1803, with a mezzotint portrait of Sir William Sidney Smith that was not included in this second edition; a third followed in 1823. - Some staining to covers; aquatints are perfectly preserved.         [Manuscript Ledger]: "Waste Book, Downpatrick" (July-December, 1819)

Downpatrick, [Northern Ireland]. 1819. Manuscript ledgers. Two small folios, spanning the months July--December, 1819. [22]pp., [20]pp. The first with one leaf removed at the rear, the second bumped at the corners, both very good. Hand ruled in ink, with three narrow right hand columns for the listing of monetary sums in pounds, shillings, and pence (L.s.d.). Both ledgers contain detailed business accounts that include inventories of merchandise received and sold (food and wine, leather goods, wool, and other sundries), client debts, cash receipts, bills, and related information. Both also have poems written on the last leaf in a different hand: the first ledger with a long two-page poetic song relating to Ireland's heroic Christian heritage; and the second with two poems on the last page, one of which is a manuscript copy of "The Frozen Brook," published in the November, 1819 issue of the Sporting Magazine, and signed "W.U." The poem warns a young maiden, Rosa, to tread carefully lest she lose her beauty, and by insinuation her virginal purity, through a single misstep. Other poems signed "W.U." were published at this time, but his identity is unknown. An intriguing set of ledgers from Downpatrick. .

Hartmann. Sold together as a collection. Charles Lallemand founded Champ d'Asile "...in a grand scheme to establish in Texas a French military colony which might aid Joseph Bonaparte to win the crown of Mexico, or at least, provide an asylum for French refugees." Webb, Handbook of Texas II, page 13. "Champ d'Asile was a settlement of Napoleonic exiles on the Trinity River near the present town of Liberty, Texas." The colonists first arrived in Galveston in January of 1818. "Obtaining boats from Jean Laffite, the company set out for its destination on the Trinity River. The men erected strong military fortifications and later built dwelling houses of logs. In defiance of Spain's decree against settlement in this region, General Lallemand issued to the world on May 11, 1818, a manifesto setting forth, 'the natural rights' of all men to seek homes in unoccupied lands. He then drew up a code of laws 'founded on justice, friendship, and disinterestedness.' All property was held in common. More occupied with military exercises and hunting than with cultivation of the soil, the group soon became short of food. When friendly Indians brought information that Spanish soldiers from San Antonio were on the march against the little fort, the group took boat back to Galveston Island, where they made camp to await General Lallemand's return from New Orleans with supplies." Webb, Handbook of Texas I, page 328. A hurricane arrived and flooded Galveston Island. Many of the French colonists were killed. The survivors sailed to New Orleans on a ship provided by Jean Laffite or went overland to Louisiana. Hartmann and Millard, Le Texas...includes the diaries of Hartmann and Millard, General Lallemand's declaration of May 11, 1818, and a list of the colonists. "(This work is)...an indispensable source and by far the best of the group." Streeter Texas 1069. Howes H-270. Raines page 109. Sabin 30706. L'Heritier, Le Champ D'Asile contains the text of General Lallemand's.

1819. TURNER, J.M.W. Views in Sussex. [24], 20 pp. Illustrated with full-page engraved map, and 5 full page steel-engraved plates cut by W. B. Cooke after original designs by Turner. Large folio, 500 x 350 mm, bound in original publisher's printed wrappers, in publisher's half green morocco chemise with etched title label pasted on, preserved in folding, felt-lined brown cloth box. London: John Murray, 1819. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition. A very rare series of views executed by W.B. Cooke after drawings made by J.M.W. Turner. The work was commissioned by Member of Parliament for Sussex, John "Mad Jack" Fuller, who wanted a record of the county. Three parts and a total of 14 engravings were planned, however, only Part 1 was published. It includes a map of The Rape of Hastings, "Battle Abbey," "Brightling Observatory," "The Vale of Asherburnham," "Pevensey Bay," and "The Vale of Heathfield." Each illustration is followed by a letterpress description. Turner also designed the etching pasted on to the boards of the portfolio, and interesting emblematic design representing the Saxon defeat at the Battle of Hastings. The portfolio only appears in four American institutions according to Worldcat and seven altogether world wide. Some wear to the chemise and minor browning, but overall a fine copy in original condition. PROVENANCE: Anthony David Estill, with his bookplate on the inside of the chemise.

All three of the most important contemporary accounts of the Champ d'Asile colony sold together

various, Paris 1819 - Charles Lallemand founded Champ d'Asile ".in a grand scheme to establish in Texas a French military colony which might aid Joseph Bonaparte to win the crown of Mexico, or at least, provide an asylum for French refugees." Webb, Handbook of Texas II, page 13. Hartmann and Millard, Le Texas.includes the diaries of Hartmann and Millard, General Lallemand's declaration of May 11, 1818, and a list of the colonists. "(This work is).an indispensable source and by far the best of the group." Streeter Texas 1069. Howes H-270. Raines page 109. Sabin 30706. L'Heritier, Le Champ D'Asile contains the text of General Lallemand's. The titles are: (1.) (L'Heritier, Louis Francois).         Driving a Bear out of Sugar Canes. Chassant un Ours des Cannes se Sucre.

Aquatint engraving with original hand-colour. Dimensions: 375 by 490mm. (14.75 by 19.25 inches). For Oriental Field Sports, "The most beautiful book on Indian sport in existence" (Schwerdt). Captain Williamson was an extremely talented amateur artist who had built up a fine collection of sketches suitable for turning in to aquatint. He teamed up with Howett - a notable sportsman as well as an industrious engraver of animals to produce this magnificent work, widely considered to contain the finest images of field sports of the Orient. By their very nature aquatint books were always very expensive, but the British public had a great curiosity about India and Williamson's work helped satisfy this desire to know more about the customs of Britain's new addition to the empire.

        Plate 54

Vienna 1819 - Vienna became a center for botanical art illustration during the early 19th century. Francis I (1768-1835) of Austria, the last monarch to rule over the Holy Roman Empire, was obsessed with flowers and promoted the study of botanicals as well as the creation of gardens in Vienna. His Imperial Gardens, where he realized his passion for flowers, remain one of Vienna's most beloved treasures. Leopold Trattinnick, a wealthy Austrian botanist, was the first curator of the Botanical Court Cabinet, founded by Francis I. A member of a prosperous family, Trattinnick had the means to publish several sumptuously produced botanical works without regards to cost. Trattinnick's publications include Auswahl Vorzuglich Schoner (1821) and Neue Arten von Pelargonien Deutchen Ursprunges (1825-43). Thesaurus Botanicus is considered his most beautiful work. Thesaurus Botanicus consists of 80 illustrated plates by the Austrian artists Strenzel, Frister, Kneisech, J. Schmid, Reinelli, Malknect and Buchberger. The majority of the plates were illustrated by Ignaz Strenzel, a professor at the Vienna Academy, and by Franz Reinelli, a flower specialist at the Royal Vienna porcelain manufacture. This hand-colored engraving, "Plate 54" measures 16.25" x 10.5" and is in excellent condition with light foxing marks around the lower edge. Expertly detailed and vibrantly colored, this engraving gives two views of this dynamic plant. The more detailed view is finely detailed from the small white flower petals with pink centers to the rich green stalk and leaves speckled with brown. The other view shows this plant with its bulb and roots and a smaller image details the closed flower. This engraving is dynamic and lush with color and detail.

Sophoclis Quae Exstant Omnia Cum Veterum Grammaticorum Scholiis

London - J. F. Dove, 1819 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce collection of the tragedies of Sophocles. In Latin and Greek. The most famous tragedies of Sophocles feature Oedipus and Antigone: they are generally known as the Theban plays, although each play was actually a part of a different tetralogy, the other members of which are now lost. Sophocles influenced the development of the drama, most importantly by adding a third actor, thereby reducing the importance of the chorus in the presentation of the plot. He also developed his characters to a greater extent than earlier playwrights such as Aeschylus. Containing seven complete plays, with the other fragments of plays attributed to Sophocles. Complete in three volumes. Condition: Rebacked in calf with original boards and backstrip preserved. Externally, sound, though with some rubbing to the extremities and some marks. Hinges are strained, though with repairs to the hinges of volume II. Internally, firmly bound, though first few pages of volume I are detached. Pages are bright, though with some scattered foxing and occasional pencilled annotations. Overall: GOOD..

Di Marco Polo e Degli Altri Viaggiatori Veneziani piu Illustri Dissertazioni

Venice: Gio. Giacomo Fuchs, 1818-, 1819. Two volumes, quarto, with four folding maps; paper patches covering ink stamps on each title-page, minor marginal stains to final few leaves and two of the maps, but a fine, uncut copy bound in period-style quarter vellum, with the original plain blue-grey wrappers bound in. The first 'modern' edition of Marco Polo. Marco Polo (1254-1324), the most famous of all travellers, was the inspiration for all explorers towards the east. His reports of his travels, whether factual or embroidered, provided Europeans not only with their first account of China, but also with a new standard in travelogue. His account was a unique compilation of history, politics and accounts of territories uncharted by the west.Polo had originally dictated the story of his travels to an acquaintance, Rusticiano, whilst he was being held prisoner in Genoa in 1299, following a naval defeat. His work was largely unknown in his lifetime, and first appeared in print in 1477 in Nuremberg, almost two hundred years after it was written.Subsequent editions of Polo's work were the source of various misprints and typographical errors, which were perpetuated for centuries, and which laid the foundation for speculation about the existence of a great continent to the south. The appearance of a promontory named "Beach" that appears on the earliest maps in the vicinity of northern Australia, stems from Polo's term "Locac", which probably describes Thailand. In Ramusio's edition of Polo, the term became "Lochac", and in the Basle edition, the term was further corrupted to "Beach". This name was then used by late-sixteenth-century and early-seventeenth-century cartographers to describe the northernmost coastline of "Terra Australis".This first edition of Zurla's version of Marco Polo's travels was appropriately published in Polo's home city of Venice. Zurla, Cardinal Vicar of Rome, was an influential writer on medieval geography: his edition of Marco Polo is noteworthy as the first "modern" edition.
