He adopted the middle name "Buonarotti" in around 1815.John Summerson described Papworth as "one of the most versatile architects and decorative artists of the period". He contributed designs to Ackermann's Repository of the Arts for almost 20 years, and published some of his designs for houses as Designs for Rural Residences in 1818. In London he designed shop fronts (one, for a tea merchant in Ludgate Hill, was in a "Chinese" style) and warehouses, and built or remodelled many villas for middle-class clients in the countryside. At Cheltenham he laid out the Montpellier Estate, and extended the Montpellier Pump Room (1825–26), with a domed rotunda inspired by the Pantheon.In 1827 William Bullock commissioned Papworth to plan the layout and design various classes of building for a new city to be called "Hygeia" in the United States, on land he had bought stretching about two-and-a-half miles along the Ohio River, opposite Cincinnati. Bullock published the plans, hoping to attract purchasers for the plots, but the scheme came to nothing.He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1816 and 1841. His address is given as Bath Place, New Road, London, until 1816, and 10 Caroline Street, Bedford Square, from 1823. In the latter year he is described as "Architect to the King of Wirtemberg", and exhibited a design for a "Palace at Canstadt for the King of Wirtemberg".In 1838 he became director of the newly established Government School of Design. His archive of drawings is in the Royal Institute of British Architects Drawings and Archives Collections. He had two sons, John Woody Papworth, and Wyatt Papworth.[10] His brother George Papworth acted as his clerk of works until 1804 and then practised as an architect in Ireland.         Endymion: A Poetic Romance.

      London: for Taylor and Hessey, 1818 - Octavo (225 x 140 mm). Early 20th-century olive green crushed morocco by Riviere & Son, richly gilt spine, sides elaborately gilt tooled and with red morocco onlays, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, gilt turn-ins Pencilled ownership initials (on front free endpaper) of the American music patron and philanthropist John Whipple Frothingham (1878–1935). Spine and head of front board lightly sunned, single bloom of foxing on title page. A very good, tall copy, in a very eye-catching binding. With the half title. First edition of the second of only three lifetime publications by Keats, with its famous opening line: "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever". This copy, as often, has the five-line errata, the second state, though it is known that copies with both states of the errata leaf were prepared before publication date and there is therefore no precedence of issue; with the later issue half-title (the verso bearing the imprint of "T. Miller, Printer, Noble street, Cheapside" – as opposed to the first issue "Printed by T. Miller, Noble street, Cheapside"). The Riviere binding is indeed a thing of beauty, and the book within is clean and notably untrimmed. Ashley III:13; Hayward 232; MacGillivray A2; Tinker 1419. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Endymion

      London: Taylor and Hessey, 1818. First edition. Bound in contemporary full red straight-grained morocco, stamped in blind and gilt on the panels, spines and edges; all edges gilt. Nearly invisible repairs to the leather hinges. Bound without the half-title or ads, but offset on the title page is the correct first issue slug: "Printed by, T. Miller, Noble Street, Cheapside." This copy with five line errata tipped in before book one. A lovely copy internally with a few spots of foxing and a slight ripple in the upper margin of the leaves, but generally unmarked and fresh. "A thing of beauty is a joy forever: Its loveliness increases, it will never pass into nothingness." With one of the most famous opening lines in English verse, Keats' Endymion is an ode to the timelessness of beauty. In retelling the mythical tale of the shepherd Endymion's love for the moon goddess Cynthia, Keats also explores the tension between man's mortality and the immortality of his muse; in doing so, he comments allegorically on the fact that while a poet himself may ultimately die, the beauty of his work will live on. "The song of Endymion throbs throughout with a noble poet's sense of all that his art means for him." (Morley).

        Laon & Cythna;

      London: printed for Sherwood, Neely & Jones; and C. and J. Ollier, by B. McMillan, 1818. or, the Revolution of the Golden City: A Vision of the Nineteenth Century. In the stanza of Spenser. Octavo (208 x 130 mm). Finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe c.1920 blue crushed morocco, spine elaborately gilt-tooled with gilt titles direct and red morocco onlay, both boards elaborately panelled with intricate gilt tooling, the front board additionally adorned coloured morocco onlay,turn-ins gilt tooled with black morocco onlay border, red silk endpaper, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a blue cloth slipcase. Light rubbing to extremities, joints starting at the ends, internally clean and untrimmed, an excellent copy. Pencil annotation to binder's blank attributing the provenance: "Kern copy". Jerome Kern was a collector in the 1920s; his preferred binder was Sangorski. True first edition, a superb untrimmed copy preserving the rare first and final blank as well as the errata leaf. This copy, as in all but 12 known copies, is in the second state without the rare flyleaf quoting Pindar. Laon & Cythna is the original iteration of Shelley's longest poem, most commonly met with as The Revolt of Islam. The errata slip gives the clue to its transformation from one to the other, with Shelley's notice that "the author deems it right to state that the following Errata are not attributable to the printer", in a catty allusion to printer Buchanan McMillan's numerous unsolicited corrections. It was Shelley's complaint as to this liberty taken by the printer that led the publishers C. and J. Ollier to read, for the first time, quite what they had agreed to publish, noting not only the incendiary political and philosophical content, but more urgently the fact that an incestuous relationship between brother and sister was central to the story. London was alive with gossip about Shelley living with both Mary Godwin and her half-sister Claire Clairmont, and in contemporary usage, such a ménage was termed incest (St. Clair, The Godwins and the Shelleys, p. 432.) At the publishers' request, Shelley then made alterations to those copies which had not already been issued, removing any hint of incest, and gave it the new title The Revolt of Islam, issuing the original sheets with 26 cancelled leaves and a new title leaf (some of which were misdated 1817). This however is the rare true first edition, entirely unexpurgated. Shelley has, in the final paragraph of his characteristically defiant preface to the present text, given an explanation (cancelled in the expurgated edition) for the incestuous plot that points less towards his domestic ménage and more towards his demotic mission: "In the personal conduct of my Hero and Heroine, there is one circumstance which was intended to startle the reader from the trance of ordinary life. It was my object to break through the crust of those outworn opinions on which established institutions depend. I have appealed therefore to the most universal of all feelings, and have endeavoured to strengthen the moral sense, by forbidding it to waste its energies in seeking to avoid actions which are only crimes of convention. It is because there is so great a multitude of artificial vices, that there are so few real virtues". This is a splendidly bound copy of the true first edition of Shelley's longest poem, through which he truly began to work out his own vision for the world (Queen Mab had essentially been a versification of Godwin's Political Justice, and Alastor more of a personal introspection), and in which the poet, as he writes in the dedicatory lines to Mary, "from that secret store, / wrought linkéd armour for my soul before / it might walk forth to war among mankind".

        Spiegazione di due rarissime medaglie cufiche della famiglia degli Ommiadi appartenenti al Museo Majnoni in Milano.

      Milan, Giulio Ferrario, 1818. - Folio (244 x 341 mm). (12) pp. With 2 engravings (one in the text, one on the title). (Bound after) II: (Schiepati, Giuseppe / Assemani, Simone). Descrizione di alcune monete cufiche del Museo di Stefano de Mainoni. Milan, Paolo Emilio Giusti, 1820. 136 pp. With 3 engraved plates. (And) III: Reinaud, [Joseph Toussaint]. Lettre à M. le baron Silvestre de Sacy sur la collection des monuments orientaux de [.] comte de Blacas. Paris, Firmin Didot, 1820. 16 pp. Original pink printed wrappers. 8vo. All three within contemporary green boards with giltstamped red spine label. Collection of three rare studies falling within "the rarely-entered territory of Muslim archaeology" (cf. Fück, p. 153), comprising the two final works of Simone Assemani and the first publication of Joseph Toussaint Reinaud. - In 1818, the orientalist Assemani, well known as an authority on Kufic coins through his "Museo Cufico Naniano" (1787) and, more recently, his treatise "Sopra le Monete Arabe effigiate" (1809), published his "Spiegazione", a discussion of two rare Cufic coins in Stefano de Majnoni's collection. Subsequently, Majnoni called on Assemani to identify several additional coins and in 1820 requested him to check a catalogue of his collection compiled by Giuseppe Schiepati. When Schiepati published the second work here included, "Descrizione di alcune monete cufiche", it was found to contain many unacknowledged contributions by Assemani, as well as extracts from his "Museo Cufico Naniano". Also, Schiepati’s historical comments relied on, and indeed summarized, C. O. Castiglioni’s "Monete Cufiche dell’ I. R. Museo di Milano" (1819). A controversy arose, in the course of which Schiepati was accused of plagiarism - a matter exacerbated by the fact that Assemani had died in early 1821, at the age of 69. - The third work in the volume is a slim octavo brochure, composed by Reinaud as a letter to his teacher Silvestre de Sacy reporting on the Islamic collection of the French antiquarian and diplomat Pierre de Blacas (1771-1839). Eight years later Reinaud would publish his famous, lavishly produced two-volume catalogue "Description des monumens musulmans du cabinet de M. le duc de Blacas", which made his name. - Occasional insignificant browning; Reinaud's work untrimmed, the folio works printed on large paper retaining very wide margins. From the library of Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Billard de Saint-Laumer (1814-92) with his collection drystamp to title page of "Descrizione"; the three plates interleaved with smaller sheets bearing numbered annotations, likely in his hand. Tab., mit 4 feinen Kupfertafeln, davon 1 als Mezzotinta - Radierung in Farbe gedruckt, in feinem Halblerdenband minimal fleckiges, feines breitrandiges Exemplar. "Ein wertvolles Seitenstück .... liefert der waagrechte (Schnitt) durch die beiden Augenmitten, den Schädel und das Gehirn, den D.W. Soemmerring in seiner Dissertation veröffentlicht hat. Er stammt von der Leiche einer wohlgebildeten 20jähringen Tirolerin, die nach kurzer Krankheit verstorben war, und wurde zuerst auf eine aufgelegte Glasplatte durchgezeichnet." -Hirschberg.First edition. A monograph on the horizontal section of the eye. This was the doctoral dissertation of D.W. Soemmering, the son of the famous anatomist. The volume is illustrated with some detailed and beautiful copperplates after the autor's drawings. An extract of this book in English translation was published at Copenhagen in 1971 (Becker 347) Hirschberg, 3 464 & 539 Goring. p. 19 Hirsch V, 331."The fascinating diversity of vertebrate ocular structure was first captured in a single work by Soemmering in 1818. Over a century and a half after their publication, Soemmering's engravings still raise a host of intriguing questions regarding how the vertebrate eye works as an optical system. Equally intriguing are the questions which are raised about the functions of the variety of eye shapes and sizes and the subsequent elucidation of general principles which may account for the diversity of eye structures."
