      - [Amsterdam], M. Westerman, 1818-20, 1823-34, 1837. 16 Vols.

OPINION OF THE SUPERIOR COURT OF THE STATE OF NEW-HAMPSHIRE, IN THE CASE OF THE TRUSTEES OF DARTMOUTH COLLEGE, VERSUS WILLIAM H. WOODWARD, ESQ. PRONOUNCED AT PLYMOUTH, IN THE COUNTY OF GRAFTON, AT THE NOVEMBER TERM, 1817. PRESENT, HON. WILLIAM M. RICHARDSON, CHIEF-JUSTICE. HON. SAMUEL BELL, HON. LEVI WOODBURY, JUSTICES.

Concord:: Printed by Isaac Hill,. 1818. 27, [1 blank] pp. Disbound, starting to loosen, else Very Good. The lower court opinion in the famous Dartmouth College Case, brought because the anti-Federalist legislature of New Hampshire had abolished Dartmouth's charter and turned it into a state university. Webster was not original counsel in the Superior Court, but delivered Dartmouth's summation at the close of trial. No record of his speech evidently exists, "but it was said that his emotional peroration 'left the whole courtroom in tears.'" Peterson, The Great Triumvirate 99. Nevertheless, the Court found against Dartmouth; Webster took the case to the Supreme Court for a fee. There, Webster's claim-- that the charter was a contract whose obligations the legislature could not constitutionally impair-- succeeded, but it was not original: able but losing counsel had made it in the lower court. FIRST EDITION. BEAL 11611. Sabin 18623. AI 44995 [2].

        THE WORKS OF CHARLES LAMB

London: Printed for C. and J. Ollier, 1818. This is an agreeably bound set of the letters, essays, and poetry by "the prince of English essayists." According to Day, Lamb contributed to the essay form by concentrating on feeling, rather than thought, by projecting a fuller sense of self into the work, and by imbuing his text with a poetic or lyrical quality. Lamb was also an accomplished poet, writing in both rhyming and blank verse, as well as a friend to many of the leading literary figures of the Romantic period. His correspondents include Wordsworth, Southey, and Coleridge, whom he had known since his youth and to whom this work is dedicated. Lamb's letters, by turns witty and meditative, reveal a life of intense reading and writing at a time when British literature was undergoing a radical transformation. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was educated at Christ's Hospital and at 17 joined the East India House, where he worked from 1792-1825. In 1796, Lamb's sister Mary stabbed and killed their mother with scissors in a fit of insanity. Charles took on her care as well as serving as sole support for a dying aunt and a prematurely senile father. For the two years preceding this catastrophe, Lamb himself had experienced a period of derangement in his early twenties that haunted him the rest of his life. Nonetheless, Lamb and his sister were devoted to one another and lived long and productive lives, publishing several extremely popular tales together.. 175 x 107 mm. (6 7/8 x 4 1/4"). Two volumes. Attractive navy blue crushed morocco, gilt, by Riviere & Son (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with French fillet border, raised bands, spines richly gilt in compartments with floral sprig centerpiece surrounded by a lozenge of small tools and floral cornerpieces, turn-ins with gilt filigree roll, purple glazed endpapers, top edges gilt. Front flyleaves with engraved armorial bookplate of John Whipple Frothingham. Occasional browning or minor foxing, otherwise a fine copy, clean and fresh internally, and in a lustrous, scarcely worn binding.         Voyage of His Majesty's ship Alceste, along the coast of Corea, to the island of Lewchew, with an account of her subsequent shipwreck

London: John Murray, 1818. 323 pages with a portrait frontispiece and five colored aquatints. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in attractive three quarter leather with marbled boards and gilt lettering to spine. (Hill 1168) Second and best editionThe Alceste brought Lord Amherst to China to serve as ambassador, and specifically to negotiate the China trade, at the time a matter of dispute between China and Great Britain.M'Leod, who was surgeon on the ship, describes the voyage out, the various calls in the East Indies including touching at Batavia, surveying off Korea, the visit to Okinawa, another to Manila, and the shipwreck off the coast of Sumatra and subsequent rescue from Malay pirates. A brief but interesting interview with Napoleon at St. Helena is also included in the narrative. This was one of the most popular travel books of its time, portraying the Far East to a much wider audience than had been reached by earlier accounts. The idyllic descriptions of Lewchew undoubtedly appealed to the romantic sensibilities of the era. Indeed, buoyed by its success, M'Leod published another work recounting his time as a slaver, A Voyage to Africa, with some Account of the Manners and Customs of the Dahomian People.

Little is known of the binder P. Devillers. Ramsden comments "Figures in the 1836-49 Almanachs at Augustin 55, but may have started as early as 1825". Francois Jauze studied at the l'Ecole nationale vétérinaire d'Alfort. He became the director of the blacksmithery at the College but failed to become Professor of farriery whereupon he left Alfort to create his own farrier veterinary school. Jauze's school issued diplomas to students after two years of study. This validity of his diploma was disputed and Jauze was stripped of the right to award it. His teaching and his text books were attacked in veterinary journals by authors such as Vatel or Jean Girard. (From the ENVA Website).

His Observations At Geneva Begin "The Prudery Of The Women At Geneva Is Incredible And Truly Ridiculous. I Have Observed That They Say Exactly The Same Thing To Every Stranger Presented To Them... To Repeat A Certain For Ula Taught Them By Their Nurses... I Would Fain Know Who The Traveler Is That First Asserted There Was Such A Thing As Liberty In Switzerland. At Geneva And Berne There Are Four Hundred Surveillans... If You Offend Them Only By The Manner In Which Your Cravat Is Tied, You Immediately Become An Object Of Their Persecution." Further Observations Made The Likelihood Of A Further English Translation Small Indeed: "Nothing Can Equal My Admiration Of The English Legislature, Unless It Be The Repulsion I Feel From English Society..         The Psalms of David, imitated in the language of the New-Testament, and applied to the Christian state and worship [and] Hymns and spiritual songs. In three books. I. Collected from the Scriptures. II. Composed on divine subjects. III. Prepared for the Lord's Supper

Exeter, NH: J. J. Williams, printer, 1818. Square 16mo, pp. 250 (the two titles continuously paged), 5-page "Table of Hymns," 1-page "List of Subscribers;" [bound with, as issued:] A Valuable Collection of Sacred Musick, adapted to the various metres in Watts (Exeter: J. J. Williams, 1818), oblong 32mo, pp. [2], 251, 3-page "Metrical Index;" the two together, with the Psalms and Hymns bound above the Sacred Musick, making a single 8vo volume; contemporary and probably original sheepskin, thin gilt rules on spine, light wear to extremities, the whole somewhat rubbed, and the covers slightly warped; both lyrics and music with scattered light foxing, tidemarks to pastedowns and flyleaves, and the front flyleaf of Sacred Musick detached, but overall a sturdy copy of an innovatively bound hymnbook that allows for myriad combinations of melodies and words. Watts (1674-1748), "The Father of English Hymnody," was renowned for his sensitive, poetic paraphrasing of biblical verse; his Psalms of David, which first appeared in 1719, was his most popular work. In this version, one Moses Elliot lays claim to the book's ingenious format: "The public is here offered a valuable collection of approved tunes bound with Watts' Psalms, in such a manner that any tune may be presented to the eye with any psalm or hymn. This construction, the benefit of which is secured to the inventor by patent, it is believed will be found convenient for the purposes of public worship" ("Advertisement" on verso of title-page).         Historic Slave Owner Letter: Texas Confederate Writes to Slaves with Farm Instructions, Gratitude

      - ALLEN A. CAMERON was born in North Carolina in 1818 and was a merchant in Rusk, Cherokee County, Texas in 1850. He became a farmer in the county at a later point. Cameron enlisted on April 7, 1862, in Company C of the 18th Texas Infantry, and was chosen a first lieutenant. He resigned October 3, 1863, due to ill health. Some of his letters are housed at the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies at Little Rock. In this 2 pp, 6 x 7 ¾, ALS, Cameron was reaching out to his farm back home, his family and the negroes who worked on the farm. A highly interesting letter because as Cameron was fighting for the Confederacy to maintain the institution of slavery, he was writing with kind instructions to his slaves and with specific wishes in the postscript that the letter be read to the negroes on the farm. His tone was highly unusual as Masters often addressed their slaves harshly. Cameron’s remarks come across as grateful for their efforts and champions them with the resolution to make a good crop. He describes the difficult life of a soldier and expressed desire for everyone in the home to work together towards a unified goal. He’s glad that the wife of a slave has moved back to her husband. In part, “ You must not think I have forgotten you all. I think of you all and home everyday I had much rather be there at work everyday then to be walking all day in the mud and sleeping on the cold ground every night. It snows here and is very cold. I travel all day from day light until evening and eat cold bread & meat that I carry in my sack have not slept in a house but a few times since I left home. This is a hard life but perhaps it will be better times after a while. I want to go home sometime this year & eat some pears & beans & turkies and some fat pigs and Irish potatoes It is a heap better for you to be at home than hired out. Take good care of your horses, your hogs & cows. Always be looking after them just like it was your own. If a cow gets unruly help Emeline—watch and wherever you see anything getting out of fix stop and fix it at once Keep the well cleaned out Keep the ditch cleaned out through the new ground so it will carry water Always consult Miss Ann in everything that she wishes and above all you & Nelson, I want you to be kid and obedient to your Miss Ann and work together and you will get along so much better at home [than] anywhere else. I was afraid that when your Mrs. talked of moving home that you would not be willing. But I am so glad you are all at home and set out with a resolution to make a crop. I know you can do it at that place and not work hard. I expect to live mighty when I come home. I want some butter milk & beans. “John Tyler, Gen will make almost as good a horse as any you must learn to plough. I want old Berry [to] work all the time if you have to keep him Perry can hollow enough to keep the hawks off & muse little Miss Maggie and help sweep the yards and be kind and obedient to your Miss Ann. Mind what she tells you. You and Perry must be good boys Nelson, Emiline, Tyler & Perry, by being obedient & kind to your Miss Ann and taking care of everything, making all you can, you will always have the good wishes of your Master, Allen. “As to Uncle Lims things, if you do not see fit to use them take care of them until I come home. I will dispose of them. Do not waste or throw away anything, nor give it away. It will not hurt anybody to wear another’s things “Allen A. Cameron “I wrote the above to the negroes. You can read it to them.” Expected folds with small pinhole loss to paper. Age toned with one small burn mark. Some reinforcement with archival tape.         Voyages dans le Béloutchistan et le Sindhy, suivis de la description géographique et historique de ces deux pays avec une carte.

Paris. Gide Fils. 1818. Translated. from the English by J.B.B. Eyriès. 2 volumes. Volume I: Engraved frontispiece, vi + 465 + [1] errata. Volume II: 381pp + [1] errata, folding map. Full calf worn with some loss at corners and joints, upper joint volume 1 split, marbled endpapers, light Library of Congress duplicate stamp on a preliminary leaf of each volume, some light occasional browning and soiling but generally the text is very clean and sound. The French edition was occasioned by the French interest in Persia which dated from the time of Napoleon's military (and cultural) expedition to Egypt in 1798 and his dreams of conquests further east, including British India. A French military mission to Persia led to Anglo-French rivalry at the Persian court. Pottinger's travels in eastern Persia and Scinde were an off-shoot of Sir John Malcolm's several missions from British India, which was held to be threatened by the French and Russian ambitions of the time, and more inform-ation was being sought on the territories adjacent to India. Pottinger's book was a pioneering work, and its competence reflected the future Sir Henry Pottinger's glittering career as military Commander and Chief Plenipotentiary in the second half of the First Anglo-Chinese War and as first Governor of Hong Kong.
