Zinne-beelden, oft Adams appel. ... Mitsgaders syne oude ende nieuwe ongemeene bruydt-lofs ende zege-zangen.Amsterdam, Everhard Cloppenburgh, 1642. 4to. With emblematic engraving on title-page and 50 engraved emblems in text, all by Salomon Savry. Gold- and blind-tooled red, grained sheepskin (1817/18) for George Spencer-Churchill, 5th Duke of Marlborough, each board with the Duke's crest in gold as centrepiece.

Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 842; Praz, pp. 522-523; Triphook, Catalogue of old books, London, June 1818, item 3307 (this copy in this binding). First edition of a popular emblem and song book written by the Dutch pharmacist and poet Jan van Veen. It includes 50 engraved emblems by the skilled artist Salomon Savry, or Saverij (1594-1678), each with a two-line motto in Dutch above and in French below. Each is followed by three Dutch verses, the last often of devout character with marginal references to Bible verses. The emblems, beautifully etched and engraved, show common people engaged in a wide variety of professions and activities, many real and mythical animals, allegorical figures, etc. The last 250 pages present songs Van Veen wrote to be sung at weddings. The present first edition, besides showing the engravings at their freshest, is the only one with French motto, and the only one in quarto. Although the crest on the binding, of George Spencer-Churchill (1766-1840), is very similar to that on the bookplate of the Althorp Library on the paste-down, they represent different libraries. Spencer-Churchill had to sell much of his library in 1818, including this volume with his ducal crest, which was apparently purchased by his father's second cousin, John George, who owned the Althorp Library.Emblem IX was first accidentally repeated in the place of emblem XIV, but a cancel slip with the correct emblem has been pasted over it (as usual). With a small hole slightly affecting emblem VI, occasional minor and mostly marginal spots, smudges and faint stains, but otherwise in very good condition and with generous margins. Slightly worn at the hinges and extremities, spine slightly faded, but binding otherwise very good. First edition of a Dutch emblem book with 51 excellent plates, charmingly bound for the new Duke of Marlborough in 1817/18.

The Revolt of Islam; a poem, in twelve cantos.

London: for C. and J. Ollier; by B. McMillan, 1818 - Octavo (225 × 137 mm). Original boards, title label to spine (priced 10s 6d), untrimmed. Housed in a blue cloth folding case. Very discreet repair to joints, extremities rubbed, some light marks and spots, hinges superficially cracked but holding fine, title page a little toned otherwise remarkably fresh within, front free endpaper with tiny section of loss to top fore-corner and small closed tear repaired at outer margin. An excellent copy. No half-title called for; with fly-title quoting Chapman, and errata leaf. First edition thus, in lovely condition uncut in the boards. The Revolt of Islam is the expurgated reissue of Laon & Cythna (1817) with a new title and 26 cancelled leaves. In 1817 the Olliers agreed to publish Shelley's long poem, Laon and Cythna. Shelley's new father in law, William Godwin, recommended a master printer for the job, Buchanan Millan, who made minor alterations to the text without consulting the poet. Shelley wrote to the Olliers complaining about these liberties, whereupon the Olliers read the work for the first time and realised what they had agreed to publish. In the original version the titular lovers were brother and sister. London was alive with gossip about Shelley living with both Mary Godwin and her half-sister Claire Clairmont, and in contemporary usage, such a ménage was termed incest (St. Clair, The Godwins and the Shelleys, p. 432.) Shelley was forced to make alterations, removing any hint of incest, and gave it the new title The Revolt of Islam. The book is made up from original sheets of Laon and Cythna, with 26 cancelled leaves and a new title leaf. A few copies were issued with the title misdated 1817; this is the second issue as usual, with the correct date. Copies in boards are scarce (due in part to the predilection of late 19th-century collectors for lavish rebindings), and this is a lovely example, with the bookplates of two notable bibliophiles, Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919 - he was also a pre-Raphaelite painter), and Willis Vickery (1857-1932, an American Judge).         Histoire naturelle des mammifères, avec les figures originales, coloriées, dessinées d'après des animaux vivans. Écureuils - Squirrels - Hörnchen.

Not bound, as issued.l A magnificent publication with fine large plates of mammals (some described in this work for the first time) from all over the world. The authors, Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844) and Fréderic Cuvier (1769-1832) were the leading authorities in mammalogy in the first half of the 19th century, and the "Histoire naturelle des mammifères" is widely regarded as their magnum opus. This is the section containing the squirrels, or Sciuridae, at least the long-tailed arboreal species, and perhaps a few long-bushy-tailed species that are squirrel look-alikes. The following are included: Sciurus erythropus (fosseyeur); S. hudsonius (écureuil de Hudson); S. hudsonius variété albino; S. niger; S. aureogaster (é. de la Californie); S. capistratus (capistrate or coqualin); S. macroura? All as issued, without stamps, annotations or other markings. All text leaves and all plates uncut and untrimmed, resulting in very large margins. Due to these large margins some edges a bit frayed or with minor tears. The plates are not spotted, but several text leaves are, a few more extensively. Several plates are very lightly age-toned, a few are more so, but generally the plates are in good to very good condition. Brunet II, p. 1,536; Nissen ZBI, 1525; Wood, p. 354.

Original pen and ink sketch, captioned "L'Intérieur d'un ménage, à Coupang" and dated at the top "Timor 1818".

Timor: during the expedition of the Uranie, 1818. Fine pen and ink sketch, the image 198 x 265 mm., on laid paper; pencil note "Mr. Arago" in Freycinet's later hand at bottom left; framed. Fine sketch of a scene in Timor, drawn by Jacques Arago during the visit of the Freycinet expedition in late 1818. Arago's observations on Timor were acute, and he is known to have toured and made sketches in both the wealthy Chinese and Malay quarters (commenting that the latter "consists of hovels"). A series of his Timor scenes were later included in the official Freycinet voyage account, but this scene was not made into an engraving and is in fact otherwise unrecorded.Jacques Etienne Arago (1790-1855) was the official artist on Freycinet's voyage, and is known for the witty and caustic account he later wrote as much as for his fine sketches. Arago was the third of four brothers who excelled in diverse professions, the most notable being his eldest brother François, a scientist and politician. Arago's undoubted artistic ability attracted the attention of the naval authorities who chose him for the demanding role of draughtsman for the Freycinet expedition. By all accounts a charming, gregarious and eccentric man, these attributes stood him in good stead during the voyage, and are reflected in the sketches he made.As with many other Arago drawings relating to the voyage, this was evidently given to Freycinet, as it is his handwriting that signs the picture "Mr. Arago" at bottom left. Freycinet is known to have retained a large number of voyage images by both Arago and his colleague Pellion, which would have been surrendered to him as both commander and official chronicler of the voyage. It is interesting to note that Arago's famous scene of Rose going ashore at Timor, sold by us in our Baudin & Flinders catalogue (2010, no. 69), has almost identical borders and annotations, as did his sketch of a man of Timor (no. 81). Provenance: Originally owned by Louis de Freycinet, commander of the Uranie. Well preserved in an attractive frame.

Two finely illustrated scrolls with 35 scenes in ink and color entitled "Ezo shima kikan" or "Ezo to kikan" ("Strange sights in the island of Ezo"), by Okumaru Hata. Two scrolls, 300 x 9110 mm. & 300 x 9540 mm. [Japan: ca. 1818-43]

      - Large-scale colonization of Hokkaido Island ("Ezo") began in the mid-18th century. Hata (1764-1808), a Tokugawa bakufu official who served in Hokkaido from 1798-1800, wrote a self-illustrated text concerning the ethnology of the Ainu, the aboriginal inhabitants of the island. A copy of his manuscript was prepared ca. 1800 with woodblock illustrations and the only known copy was in the Hyde collection (sold Christie's NY, 7 October 1988, lot 48 for $66,000). A series of manuscript copies of Hata's original manuscript were made and circulated, each with notable variations. Our two scrolls are remarkably complete. The first scroll begins with a preface describing the long history of Japan's relations with Hokkaido (the Japanese were extremely anxious about Russia colonizing the island and were justifying their own territorial claims). Described also are the various rulers of the Matsumae fiefdom, which had been granted exclusive trading rights with the Ainu. The reason for the compilation of these texts was the official visit of the current lord Akihiro Matsumae who was making a tour of the southern part of the island which his clan controlled. Each fine brush and color illustration is prefaced with explanatory text. In the first scroll, we find a depiction of the mythological beginnings of Ezo, a tribal leader (with detailed descriptions of his clothes and language), his wife (describing her clothes and accessories), tattooed hand (how and why the Ainu do tattoos), ceremonial head wear, a necklace, a ceremonial tool, a sea otter, a group of Ainu leaders, a dance performed in front of the leaders, Ainu men and women drinking an alcoholic beverage, a native playing a long stringed instrument (with lyrics of the songs played), another drinking scene with three men clearly inebriated, a family (with extended comments on the polygamous structure of families), weapons (bows and arrows), and a scene of archery practice. The second scroll begins with a discussion of the medicinal value of the sea otter's liver. This is followed by a winter scene showing seven Ainu men preparing to launch their boats to hunt for sea otters, a government office where men are exchanging otters for rice and tobacco, an account of bear hunting with a depiction of a captured bear for the festivity of offering the bear to the gods, the sacrifice of the bear (I will not describe this but it is "special"), the scene of offering the dead bear to the gods, a banquet with Japanese visitors, Ainu houses, a religious house (exterior and interior views), religious rituals, Ainu games, "wishing a safe trip" to a group of hunters on a boat, etc. The beginning brocade endpapers of the scrolls are rather wormed but the illustrations and text are untouched. The backs of both scroll are flecked with mica.

The laws include those governing titles to lands, numerous regulations on slaves, and duties on sugar and molasses produced on the island. The American Revolutionary War caused a significant disruption in the sugar trade, and British sentiment against slavery further served to shift the economy of the island in the late-18th century. These laws were originally issued as a two volume set in 1805, though the third volume followed in 1818 and is noted as Volume III on the titlepage, covering the period 1805-18.         Essai sur la Peéparation, la Conservation, la Désinfection des Substances Alimentaires, et sur la Construction des Fourneaux Economiques...

Paris, Pichard libraire, Imprimerie de Chaignieau ainé, 1818, 8vo (cm. 11 x 19,5) legatura in mezza pelle coeva, pp. (2),VIII, 647 con 3 tavole incise in rame e ripiegate fuori testo.

A New and Accurate Map of North America from the best Authorities

Mathew Carey, Philadelphia 1818 - Map. Engraving with original outline hand coloring. Images measures 14 x 15" This 1818 map of North America was published in the third and last edition of Carey's "General Atlas". Mapping the continent prior to the explorations of Lewis and Clark, it depicts several interesting features. Hopeful traces of the Northwest passage appear in the north with the appearance of the seas identified by Mackenzie and Hearne. As we move southward, the Columbia River extends eastward to almost meet the Missouri River. The Rockies end close to the Canadian border and another small cluster of mountains are shown near the Colorado River and Rio Grande. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the appearance of the Kingdom of Quivira south of the River of the West. Quivira is one of the lands associated with the Spanish legends of the Seven Cities of Gold. Florida is shows as part of Spanish possessions. Indian tribes such as the Apacheria, Pimas and Yama are identified. The map is in good condition with some wear along the centerfold. Minor foxing at places and offsetting. Some edge wear. Raised in a family of publishers and book sellers, Mathew Carey (1760--1839) became one of the most important figures of early American cartography. Carey was based in Philadelphia, where he owned a publishing firm and oversaw a cottage system of independent artists and craftsmen. His important "Atlas" was the first American-published atlas of the United States. Furthermore, the maps his firm produced represent some of the best quality and most informative depictions of the United States in the early period after it gained independence. This map is a wonderful example of his fine work.
