Laon and Cythna; or, The Revolution of the Golden City: A Vision of the Nineteenth Century. In the Stanza of Spenser

London: Sherwood, Neely & Jones and C. and J. Ollier, 1818. Octavo. xxii, 270pp. First edition, first issue. Inscribed "From the Author" in Shelley's hand. One of only twelve unexpurgated presentation copies containing the exceedingly rare half-title page (sig. d) with a quote from Pindar.& & Printed in 1817 and intended for publication in January 1818, the poem was suppressed by its publisher, Ollier, who feared a backlash against the depiction of incest in certain of Shelley's stanzas. Upon the book's printing, Shelley had instructed Ollier to quickly bind twelve copies and send them to him. Ollier complied, and it is thought that these presentation copies constitute the entire first issue of the book. Shortly after sending Shelley the copies, Ollier raised his objections about the content and refused to continue to publish the work unless revisions were made. Shelley begrudgingly acquiesced to this demand, although, according to Forman, he apparently could not bear to initiate the necessary changes himself, and instead had a committee of his friends propose revisions which he would then approve, modify, or reject, all the while complaining that his poem was being spoiled in the process. The result of these efforts was the release of a new, expurgated version of the book under the title The Revolt of Islam, a work about which Shelley had serious misgivings. In an 1817 letter to Ollier, quoted in Granniss, he wrote, "'I have the fairest chance of the public approaching my work with unbiased and unperverted feeling -- the fruit of reputation . . . is within my reach. It is for you . . . to blast all this, & to hold up my literary character in the eye of mankind as that of a proscribed & rejected outcast." Granniss goes on to comment that the dedicatory poem to Mary Shelley that precedes the main text "contains some of [Shelley's] most beautiful lines."& & This copy of Laon and Cythna is elegantly bound in full brown morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with a gilt rule border to the outer edges of both boards and turn-ins. Also with gilt lettering to spine within compartments formed by raised bands in the leather. Slight cracking to rear spine and some apparent bleaching to title page that does not affect text, else a very fine copy of a rare and controversial work, additionally inscribed by Shelley. Housed in a cloth box with leather spine label, lettered in gilt. A.e.g. (Forman, pp.72-87; Granniss 39; Wise, pp.47-48).

        Don Quixote de la Mancha

London - T. Cadell & W. Davies, 1818 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A complete set of this first Smirke illlustrated classic novel. Cervantes' magnum opus, Don Quixote, considered to be the first modern European novel, is a classic of Western literature, and is regarded amongst the best works of fiction ever written. With illustrations by Robert Smirke, an English painter and illustrator whose daughter, Mary, translated this edition from its original Spanish. Smirke's pictures were usually of small size and painted in monochrome, as being best adapted for engraving. Neat ink inscription to front free endpaper of each volume reads 'Mina, From Daddy, April 24th, 1896. 'First edition thus. Complete in four volumes. Condition: Infull morocco bindings with gilt detailing to the boards and spine. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Some wear to the extremities, most heavily to the spine.         Don Quixote de la Mancha (4 volumes)

London: T Cadell & W Davies. PUBLISHING DETAILS: First edition thus of Cervantes masterpiece, published in four volumes by T Cadell & W Davies of London in 1818. Size; 24 x 15 cms (9.5" x 6"). Weight; 4.21 kilos (10 pounds 9 ounces) N.B. additional shipping costs will apply. 1744 pages, all edges gilt. 48 plates by Robert Smirke. CONDITION: I would rate this set as very good. The full Moroccan leather covers, with gilt tooling and titles and 5 raised bands to the spines, are generally sound and clean, though with some splitting to the top fore-edges of the spines to vols 1, 3 & 4 and bruising to the corners. The bindings remain tight and secure throughout save for surface cracking to the inner hinges. The text and illustrations are generally clean and bright, with some light foxing here and there, light offsetting from the plates and slight staining to the inner bottom corners of some of the plates (not affecting the illustrations). The endpapers are lightly foxed but free from labels or inscriptions. The gilt edges to the page blocks are particularly good, with just light dusting to the top edge. All in all, this is a very handsome early edition of this cornerstone of western literature. THE NOVEL: Don Quixote has become so entranced by reading romances of chivalry that he determines to become a knight errant and pursue bold adventures, accompanied by his squire, the cunning Sancho Panza. As they roam the world together, the aging Quixote's fancy leads them wildly astray, tilting at windmills, fighting with friars, and distorting the rural Spanish landscape into a fantasy of impenetrable fortresses and wicked sorcerers. At the same time the relationship between the two men grows in fascinating subtlety. Often considered to be the first modern novel, Don Quixote is a wonderful burlesque of the popular literature its disordered protagonist is obsessed with. Miguel de Cervantes's mock-epic masterwork was voted the greatest book of all time by the Nobel Institute. The 48 plates and occasional vignettes are by the English painter and illustrator Robert Smirke (1752-1845), whose daughter, Mary, translated this edition. Smirke's pictures were usually of small size and painted in monochrome, as being best adapted for engraving. As well as Don Quixote, he provided illustrations for the Bible, 'The Picturesque Beauties of Shakespeare' (1783), Johnson's 'Rasselas' (1805), 'Gil Blas' (1809), the 'Arabian Nights' (1811), 'Adventures of Hunchback' (1814) and the British poets, especially Thomson. His works are characterised by good drawing, refinement, and quiet humour. (Source: Wikipedia) . Very Good. Leather Bound. First Thus. 1818. 24 x 15 cms (9.5" x 6").

46 - London- John Murray, 1818 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Twenty-six volumes of the literary andpolitical periodical, theQuarterly Review. The Quarterly Review was a literary and political periodical founded in March 1809 by the well known London publishing house John Murray. It ceased publication in 1967. Under its third editor, John Gibson Lockhart, the Quarterly became less consistent in its political philosophy. While Croker continued to represent the Canningites and Peelites, the party's liberal wing, it also found a place for the more extremely conservative views of Lords Eldon and Wellington.       [England],: 1 September, 1818.. Sheet of laid paper, 153 x 196 mm., printed to both sides and completed in secretarial hand, signed Brisbane; very good. Attractive printed payslip boldly signed by Brisbane while serving in France as part of the occupying army.Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane (1773-1860) purchased his commission in 1789 and saw service in Ireland (where he served with a young Wellington), Flanders, the West Indies and Jamaica, India, and the Peninsula War. In 1812 he was promoted Brigadier-General at Wellington's express wish, and in 1815 was knighted. For the following three years he served in the army of occupation in France, and it was during his service there that he signed this slip at his new rank of Major General. As early as 1815 he had applied to become Governor of New South Wales, and it was not until November 1820, again on Wellington's advice, that that appointment was made and he took over from Macquarie in December the following year. The slip confirms that for the two month period between 25 June and 24 August 1818 Brisbane received the sum o9f £144.12.5 as pay for a "Major General with an Aide de Camp". The printed slip was issued on behalf of William Purdue Smith, Deputy-Paymaster General to the Forces on the Continent, under orders from Wellington.Manuscript material relating to Brisbane, particularly relating to his career before the governorship, is quite rare on the market.

CAREY';S GENERAL ATLAS, IMPROVED AND ENLARGED: BEING A COLLECTION OF MAPS OF THE WORLD AND QUARTERS, THEIR PRINCIPAL EMPIRES, KINGDOMS, &c

Philadelphia: M. Carey & Son, 1818. Third Edition Improved. Quarter Leather. Very Good binding. Folio. The third, improved and enlarged, edition of Carey';s important General Atlas of 1796, the first atlas printed in America. Complete with 58 engraved maps (50 of which are double-page) with boundaries hand-colored. This copy has the signature of Benjamin Huger, and was his at West Point where he apparently gave it to his best friend and roommate "S. B. W. O';Brian" according to the faintly penciled inscription. Huger was a career ordnance officer and in the Mexican American War was on the staff of Maj. General Winfield Scott. He later served as a Confederate General officer during the American Civil War. Wheat, in Mapping of the Transmississippi West, refers to the New and Accurate Map of North America as"[a]n atavistic map of the first order" (1814 Carey 1) and notes the influence of Lewis and Clark on the "beautiful map of the ';Missouri Territory';." (1814 Carey 2). Many, if not most, of the maps have discreet archival repair to the backs of the folds; a few have some additional mending to the margins; occasional soiling and foxing with very occasional contemporary marginalia, largely in pencil (though in whose hand was can not say); preliminaries are a softened by creasing; backed in original leather with paper over boards; loss to the head of the spine has been mended with morocco; tail has been reinforced; front board has been discreetly reattached; digital images can be made available upon request. (Sabin 10858; Streeter 82 (1814 printing); Wheat, Mapping, 315 (1814 printing)). Very Good binding.

Second edition, enlarged and approved. An early American distilling manual, originally published in 1813 by John Bioren. This work predates the printed appearance of what we recognize as bourbon whiskey by about one decade, the first reference to "bourbon whiskey" is 1821, and the first printed recipe 1823. But the book contains a serious examination of the charring of white oak barrels with burning straw, which is one of the main factors that makes bourbon what it is. This new edition is substantially more detailed, with seven more illustrations than the original. Some light foxing throughout, corners a bit bumped, otherwise very good, in full tree calf, with spine rebacked and original spine and gilt-stamped label laid down.&

        IL CONCILIATORE. Foglio scientifico-Letterario.

Cosi' Diz. Treccani,III, p. 415.
