. . Thieme-B. XVII, 74 f. The Oedipus Romanus; Or, An Attempt To Prove, From The Principles Of Reasoning Adopted By The Rt. Hon. Sir William Drummond, In His Oedipus Judaicus, That The Twelve Cæars Are The Twelve Signs Of The Zodiac. Addressed To The Higher And Literary Classes Of Society [Bound With] Episcopacy Considered, with reference to the Modern Popular Societies [Two works in one volume].

Printed By A.J. Valpy Tooke's Court Chancy Lane. Sold By J. Hatched 190 Picadilly. 1818 & 1819, London - Hardcover. Octavo. 148pp (Oedipus Romanus) + 70pp (Episcopacy Considered). Full leather with gilt lettering & rules on spine & gilt borders on boards. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers.A most curious work, inspired by the "Oedipus Judaicus" of Sir William Drummond who argued "that the antient Jews, like the other nations of antiquitiy, had their esoteric, and their exoteric doctrines" and that sections of the Old Testament were actually an allegorical interpretation of the astrological / astronomical beliefs and writings of the ancients. Townsend suggests that Drummond's methods of analysis can be equally well applied elsewhere, suggesting that "the Roman historians, Tacitus, Suetonius, &c., had their esoteric and exoteric doctrines: they are enigmatical writers, and concealed certain truths from the vulgar under the disguise of a most candid, and impartial statement of facts." In particular he suggest that the twelve Caesars are actually representations of the "welve signs of the Zodiac" - a theory he explores in full in this work. In this volume "The Oedipus Romanus" is bound together with "Episcopacy Considered," a work that is anonymous save for the attribution to "A Member of the University of Cambridge." The "Episcopacy Considered, seems to be a relatively straightforward theological tract dealing with division within the Church which may well also be by Townsend. Curiously what seems to be the very same copy of this work (with both books bound together) is listed in Quaritch's catalogue No. 223 (1903) where the cataloguer suggests that the author of both volumes is "the same." Boards rubbed at edges and hinges, corners rounded, front hinge a little tender. Occasional mild foxing & spots to pages throughout, otherwise a solid, VG copy. Scarce. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Fundamenta astronomiae pro anno MDCCLV deducta ex observationibus viri incomparabilis James Bradley in specula astronomica Grenovicensi per annos 1750-1762 institutis.

Königsberg: Friedrich Nicolovius 1818 - FIRST EDITION, first gathering foxed, a few spots elsewhere, pp. xii, 325, [1], folio, contemporary half dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine (‘Bradley/Astronomiæ’), nineteenth-century engraved armorial bookplate of Robert Le Poer French, good ‘The positions of Bradley’s stars valid for 1755 were published by Bessel as Fundamenta astronomiae pro anno 1755 (1818). This work also gives the proper motions of the stars, as derived from these observations of Bradley, of Piazzi, and of Bessel himself. It constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then positions of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel’s work, Bradley’s observations were made to mark the beginning of modern astrometry. During this investigation Bessel became an admirer of the art of observation as practiced by Bradley; and because Bradley could not evaluate his own observations, Bessel followed and also taught the principle that immediately after an observation, the reduction had to be done by the observer himself. Further, he realized that the accurate determination of the motions of the planets and the stars required continuous observations of their positions until such motions could be used to predict the positions of the stars for all times with sufficient accuracy’ (DSB). The name Robert Le Poer French is not found in the list of subscribers (which arranged by town: Oxford tops the list with 21 takers). Many copies went directly to libraries, and the book is quite scarce in commerce. (Norman 226)

From the arrangements which have been made, it is expected that the work will answer every purpose of information not only to gentlemen of the Navy, but to those who feel an interest in the naval events of the last fourteen yeas; while the correctness of the drawings, the superior style of the engravings, and the neatness of execution, will render it worthy of the attention of every lover of the fine arts.         Journal of a Visit to South Africa, in 1815, and 1816

London: L.B. Seeley and R. Ackermann,, 1818. With some Accounts of the Missionary Settlements of the United Brethren, near the Cape of Good Hope. Quarto (263 × 204 mm) Contemporary mid-blue calf, black morocco label to the spine, narrow flattened bands, compartments with gilt saltire formed of lyre tools with a central lozenge containing an octofoil, palmette tools deeply in blind to the interstices, boards elaborately concentrically panelled in gilt and blind, beaded gilt edge-roll, edges and endpapers marbled, gilt laurel wreath and lozenge roll to the turn-ins. Folding engraved map as frontispiece, routes marked in red and blue, 12 hand-coloured aquatint plates, and 4 uncoloured engravings. A little rubbed, and mottled on the boards, upper joint started towards the tail, but holding, second blank coming loose, some off-setting from and to the plates, one of the uncoloured plates rather browned, light browning overall, remains a highly attractive copy. First edition. Latrobe was sent out to South Africa in response to the request of Moravian missionaries at Genadendal and Groenekloof for a minister to visit them. "The Governor of the Cape had expressed a wish that a third station should be opened, and in order to choose a site the author travelled through a large part of the country right up to the Fish River. There is a full description of the district of Groenekloof, and of the missionary settlements, about thirty miles north of Cape Town … also an account of the church and village of Caledon" (Mendelssohn). Latrobe's account - characteristic of the man, "devout, but most companionable, and energetic in mind and body" - is much enhanced by the superbly coloured plates after sketches by the author himself and John Melville, Government Surveyor of the Cape, who accompanied him. Also included is a visit to St. Helena, and "the first description of the fledgling colony" of Ascension Island (Howgego).

Narrative of an Expedition to Explore the River Zaire Usually Called The Congo, In South Africa, in 1816, under the Direction of Captain J.K. Tuckey, R.N. To Which is Added the Journal of Professor Smith; Some General Observations on the Country and its Inhabitants

Albemarle Street, London: John Murray, 1818. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. James Kingston Tuckey (1776-1816), an Irish-born English naval officer, was captured by the French on a voyage from St. Helena in 1805 and suffered an imprisonment of nearly nine years. Promoted to the rank of commander in 1814, he was later assigned to lead an expedition to explore the Congo River in 1816 to learn if there was a connection between the Congo and Niger basins. He explored the river up to 480 km from the sea. Most of the officers and crew died of fever and Tuckey himself died on 14 October 1816, aged 40, in Moanda, on the coast of today's Democratic Republic of the Congo. The expedition was a failure but raised interest in the exploration of Africa. This book is an account of the expedition, with thirteen plates, one colored by hand, and a large fold-out frontispiece map. This is a very good copy, rebacked and retaining the original quarter leather and marbled paper-covered boards. The boards show light wear to surfaces, heavier at the edges, with the binding tight and square. The contents are bright with moderate spotting confined mostly to plates and prelims. All plates and the foldout map are present and intact.

ARCTIC WALRUSES, MET WITH OFF SPITZBERGEN BY H.M.S.'S DOROTHEA & TRENT. JUNE 1818 [manuscript title]

[Off Spitzbergen, high Arctic]. 1818.. Watercolor, 9 1/2 x 13 inches; matted to 13 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches. Small closed tear at top of sheet, not affecting image. Lightly toned, pinholes in corners of sheet, some light wear. Very good. A charming watercolor of a close-encounter with large walruses in the Arctic, painted by naval officer and artist Frederick W. Beechey. In 1818, then 24, Beechey sailed with the Arctic exploring expedition attempting to locate a northern passage to the Pacific via a Northeast Passage.. He later served as second in command and chief draughtsman aboard the Trent under Sir John Franklin. Some years later, in 1843, he compiled his narrative of the voyage with several sketches, entitled A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY TOWARDS THE NORTH POLE, in which six reproductions of sketches he had done while in the Arctic were printed. While the printed work does contain two engravings of walruses - including one of the boat being attacked by them - this particular image is not among them. The piece shows the longboat of sailors on the left side approaching an ice flow on which four enormous walruses perch - the walruses take up fully half the page. A sailor in a red cap stands in the bow of the boat holding a pole, or perhaps it is a harpoon, while the remainder of the men pull at the oars, their backs to the artist. A handsome depiction from this important voyage. Beechey is best remembered for his later voyage to the Pacific and the Bering Strait, where he attempted to enter the Northwest Passage from the west to meet up with his old commander, Franklin. He ultimately retired as a rear admiral.
