Original pen and ink sketch, captioned "L'Intérieur d'un ménage, à Coupang" and dated at the top "Timor 1818".

[Timor]: 1818. [Timor]: 1818. Fine pen and ink sketch, the image 19.8 x 26.5 cm., on laid paper; pencil note "Mr. Arago" in Freycinet's later hand at bottom left; framed. Fine sketch of a scene in Timor, drawn by Jacques Arago during the visit of the Freycinet expedition in late 1818. Arago's observations on Timor were acute, and he is known to have toured and made sketches both in the wealthy Chinese and Malay quarters (commenting that the latter "consists of hovels"). A series of his Timor scenes were later included in the official Freycinet voyage account, but this scene was not made into an engraving and is in fact otherwise unrecorded.Jacques Etienne Arago (1790-1855) was the official artist on Freycinet's voyage, and is known for the witty and caustic account he later wrote as much as for his fine sketches. Arago was the third of four brothers who excelled in diverse professions, the most notable being his eldest brother François, a scientist and politician. Arago's undoubted artistic ability attracted the attention of the naval authorities who chose him for the demanding role of draughtsman for the Freycinet expedition. By all accounts a charming, gregarious and eccentric man, these attributes stood him in good stead during the voyage, and are reflected in the sketches he made.As with many other Arago sketches relating to the voyage, this sketch was evidently given to Freycinet, as it is his handwriting that signs the picture "Mr. Arago" at bottom left. No doubt as an official artist, Arago was required to surrender all of his pictures to the voyage commander. It is also interesting to note that Arago's famous scene of Rose going ashore at Timor, sold by us in our Baudin & Flinders catalogue (2010, no. 69), has almost identical borders and annotations, as did his sketch of a man of Timor (no. 81). Well preserved in an attractive frame.

Catalogue of the Trustees, Instructors, and Students of Amherst Academy November, 1818

Greenfield, Mass: Denio and Phelps, Printers, 1818. Printed broadside with type ornament border. Folio (16-1/4 x 13-1/4 in.). Small loss at edges, creased from prior folding, backed and mounted on board. Printed broadside with type ornament border. Folio (16-1/4 x 13-1/4 in.). Rare broadside printing of the trustees and male and female students in the 1818 class of Amherst Academy. Founded in 1814 by a group of town leaders that included Noah Webster and Samuel Fowler Dickinson, Amherst Academy quickly rose to prominence as an elite private secondary school. In 1818, the year of this broadside, the trustees of the Academy approved a plan to establish a free school for the teaching of "indigent young men of promising talents and hopeful piety, who shall manifest a desire to obtain a liberal education with a sole view to the Christian ministry." Amherst College opened in 1821. Founder and trustee Samuel Fowler Dickinson - whose name, along with Noah Webster and others appears on this broadside - was the grandfather of the poet Emily Dickinson. It was in his Main Street house that Emily spent most of her life, and she attended the Academy from 1840-7. The broadside lists eight Dickinson girls and five Dickinson boys enrolled as students, including Emily's father Edward. One Edwards Dickinson is listed as Assistant Preceptor. Of particular interest to this bookseller is the student James Comins, Jr. Amherst Academy continued to print catalogues of its trustees and students into the 1850s.

Die Verfolgung von Drechsels Erfindung / Entnomen und zum Nutzen u: Fromen der Zeit und Nachwelt ans Licht gezogen.- Leipzig und Frankfurth im Jahre 1818.

      - Kreide- und Federlithographie. 46,5:37,6 cm.

The Fables of Aesop, and others, with designs on wood by Thomas Bewick

Newcastle: printed by E. Walker, for T. Bewick and Son, 1818. Extra-illustrated with engravings from the Stockdale Aesop by Thomas Bewick's great friend the Rev. William Turner of Newcastle. 323 wood engravings by Thomas Bewick. First edition, one of 500 large copies on Imperial thick wove paper watermarked 1806, there were also 1500 copies in Royal and Demy sizes.. Pp. xxiv, Imperial 8vo, contemporary full calf decorated in gilt and blind, marbled edges, marbled endpapers, rebacked with gilt decorated spine, a strong, good-looking copy. Extra-illustrated by its first owner in 1820 with 56 copper plates from Stockdale's Aesop which are pasted in at the top or bottom of the page with the relevant fable. Armorial bookplate and signature of the Rev. William Turner who has inscribed the book dating his pasting in of the extra engravings as 1820 on the title page. The Rev. William Turner was a Unitarian minister in Newcastle and an intimate friend of Bewick. Turner established two Sunday schools and was a founding member of the Literary and Philosophical Society in Newcastle where he was Lecturer on Natural and Experimental Philosophy and Secretary. The signature in the book matches one reproduced in Jenny Uglow's book on Bewick which has a picture of William Turner reproducing his signature beneath it. There was a so-called 'Thumb-Mark' receipt with many copies which was a leaf with printed Bewick thumb-mark and the facsimiles of signatures and seaweed stamped on it which were run off the press separately designed originally of being given only to subscribers. Tattershall quotes this about the receipts - "We at first sent the Books without them, but as soon as it became known to the public this would not do...it has given us a great deal of unlooked-for-trouble..." as people didn't feel their books were complete without them. This copy does not have the thumb-mark receipt. Perhaps this could be explained by it being given to Turner as one of Bewick's close friends or that Turner saw no reason to keep it.

Apicius Redivivus. The Cook's Oracle: containing Practical Receipts for Roasting, Boiling, Frying, Boiling, Vegetables, Fish, Hashes, Made Dishes, &c&c On the most Economical Plan for Private Families; also, the art of composing the most simple and most highly finished broths, gravies, soups, sauces, and flavouring essences...the humblest novice may work with the same certainty as the experienced cook. The result of actual experiments made in the Kitchen of a Physician, for the purpose of composing A Culinary Code for the Rational Epicure

London: John Hatchard, 1818. A good copy with original boards and spine label. Second ediition, carefully revised. Engraved marketing table as frontispiece and, new to this edition, 8 pages of music at the end entitled "Anacreontic Song". Pp. 592 plus 8 pages of music. 8vo., original boards, rebacked in original-style paper preserving the original endpapers and with the original spine label laid down, frontispiece browned and a few other areas of mild browning, otherwise a very good, uncut copy. Probably unwittingly funny, this book brought a new spice to cookery books, giving health advice as well as dishes that were actually possible to cook by anyone - or so Kitchiner advertised. Ther first edition had appeared in the previous year and the book went into several editions but after this it appeared as simply 'The Cook's Oracle'. Each edition carried the doctor's famous maxim "Masticate, Denticate, Chump, Grind and Swallow!". Dr. William Kitchiner (1775-1827) was an eccentric who gave lavish banquets in his London home. He published various scientific discourses but his main fame was for his workApicius Redevivus, or The Cook's Oracle1817. Kitchiner revealed to the reading public his experimental recipes, which he developed in his own kitchen, promoting their health-giving as well as pleasure-giving properties. His catch phrase was "Masticate, Denticate, Chump, Grind and Swallow". He invented a piquant sauce rather futuristically named 'Zest' which was the first of its kind and was to be used to spice things up in the way that we use Worcestershire Sauce today. Contemporary ownership inscription on black side of frontispiece. Only 7 copies are noted on WorldCat, 4 in the US, 2 in the UK and 1 in Germany. Oxford p.146 in note, Bitting p.262, Cagle 798, Bridges & Cooper English: Dr. William Kitchiner, Regenecy Eccentric, Southover Press, 1992, QuayleOld Cook Books, p. 149ff.

British Natural History Books. ** "William Kirby (19 September 1759 ?- 4 July 1850) was an English entomologist, an original member of the Linnean Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society, as well as a country priest, making him an eminent parson-naturalist. He is considered the "founder of entomology"... Kirby began planning his Introduction to Entomology, a celebrated title, in 1808. This was the practical result of a friendship formed in 1805 with William Spence, of Hull, and appeared in four volumes between 1815 and 1826. Much of the work fell to Kirby owing to Spence's ill health. The book was illustrated by John Curtis. It reached its seventh edition in 1856... In 1815, Kirby took his MA with the intention of applying for the Professorship of Botany at the University of Cambridge when it should become vacant. A dispute arose as to whether this appointment lay in the grant of the Senate or the Crown. Kirby's Tory political complexion proved a stumbling-block, and in the event John Stevens Henslow was appointed. In 1827, Kirby assisted Henry Denny in arranging the natural history specimens at Norwich Museum. In 1832, he helped to establish an early museum in Ipswich under the aegis of the town's Literary Institute, and presented a herbarium and a group of fossils. With Spence, he helped to found the Entomological Society of London in 1833, with John Westwood as Secretary, and became its Honorary President for life. On that occasion, he presented his own cabinet of insects, collected over more than 40 years, which contained many of the specimens figured in his papers. Kirby was the original President of the Ipswich Museum, 1847?-50, fulfilling a project which he had advocated since 1791, and appeared with William Buckland and others at the opening ceremony...." - See Wikipedia .

On y lit cependant : p. 53, "M. 1 vol. 8vo. Contemporary half sheep. 1 hand-colored frontispiece-portrait, 1 plan. Second edition of this account of the Meduse’s shipwreck. Scarce copy with important manuscript annotations contemporary made, presumably by the hand of one of the survivor as they are written at the first person, giving more details about the story. An amazing copy of the most famous publication about a shipwreck. Polak, 8679.

The Federalist, On the New Constitution; Written in 1788.

1818 - Appealing Early Edition of The Federalist Hamilton, Alexander [1755-1804]. James Madison [1751-1836]. John Jay [1745-1829]. The Federalist, On the New Constitution; Written in 1788. A New Edition, With the Names and Portraits of the Several Writers. Philadelphia: Published by Benjamin Warner, 1818. vi, [7]-504 pp. Lithographed portrait frontispiece of Hamilton, two other plates with portraits of Madison and Jay, both with tissue overlays. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind rules to boards, lettering piece and gilt fillets to spine. Moderate toning, occasional light foxing, faint dampstaining to some leaves, chip to margin of a leaf with no loss to text. Early markings to margins of a few leaves, interior otherwise clean. Ex-library. Small inkstamps to verso of title page and foot of final page. A nice copy in an attractive binding. * Second single-volume edition, a reissue of the first with plates. With the text of the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution. Of the eighty-five essays, John Jay wrote numbers 1-5 and 54, Madison wrote numbers 10, 14, and 37-48. Numbers 18-20 were written by all three. The remaining 50 were written by Hamilton. (The author's name is listed at the end of each essay in this edition.) The essays aimed to encourage ratification of the proposed constitution by New York State, but were immediately recognized as the most compelling commentary on the most radical form of government the world had yet seen. Most of these essays appeared under the collective pseudonym "Publius" in New York newspapers and journals from October 27, 1787 to early June 1788. The M'Lean brothers published the first edition of The Federalist (along with the text of the Constitution) in 1788 as a two-volume set. The present edition follows the text of the 1802 Hopkins edition, which was the first to include corrections by Jay and Hamilton. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 2818.
