Anti-Israel.

An Account of a Female of the White Race of Mankind, Part of Whose Skin Resembles that of a Negro; With some Observations on the Causes of the Differences in Colour and Form Between the White and Negro Races of Men

London: Archibald Constable and Co, 1818. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. "The first statement of the theory of natural selection and an almost complete anticipation of Darwin's theory" - Garrison Morton   "[What was done for animals artificially] seems to be done with equal efficiency, though more slowly, by nature, in the formation of varieties of mankind, fitted for the country which they inhabit. Of the accidental varieties of man, which would occur among the first scattered inhabitants, some one would be better fitted than the others to bear the dis- eases of the country. This race would multiply while the others would decrease, and as the darkest would be the best fitted for the [African] climate, at length [they would] be- come the most prevalent, if not the only race."   Wells presented "An Account of a Female of the White Race..." to the Royal Society in 1813 but the work was not published until 1818, after his death, as a paper in this volume entitled "Two Essays." In this paper, Wells describes how the natural selection process applies to skin color in humans. lxxiii, 439 pp. 8vo. Paper covered boards with brown cloth spine, black leather patch title with gold embossed titling. Evidence at base of spine that a label was removed, no indication within the book of it being ex-library. Some scuffing and wear to boards. Clean, within, many pages uncut. Wells' paper appears at pp. 425-439 of this volume with the full title: "Two Essays: One Upon Single Vision with Two Eyes; The Other On Dew. A Letter to the Right Hon. Lloyd, Lord Kenyon and An Account of a Female of the White Race of Mankind, Part of Whose Skin Resembles that of a Negro; With some Observations on the Causes of the Differences in Colour and Form Between the White and Negro Races of Men"

Fine engraved frontis., two engraved plates, & four folding printed tables. 342 pp. 8vo, cont. fine dark blue sheep maroquiné (extremities a trifle rubbed), sides with gilt filet, flat spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, a.e.g. Prague: G. Haase, 1818. First edition; a very fine and handsome copy printed on thick paper and bound in contemporary dark blue sheep maroquiné, gilt. Reuss (1761-1830), took his medical degree in 1783 and established a practice at Prague; during the same period he also conducted mineralogical and geological investigations and went to Freiberg to hear Werner lecture at the Bergakademie. He wrote an important geological textbook which contained the most complete exposition of Werner's ideas. "In 1784 Reuss became physician to Prince Lobkowitz and moved to the northwestern Bohemian city of Bilin...Bilin was already famous as a spa, and Reuss, in addition to his medical duties, supervised the exploitation of the mineral springs and mines belonging to his patron. In this connection he continued his mineralogical and geological researches and concurrently began an investigation of the spas of northern Bohemia."-D.S.B., XI, p. 387. Reuss provides here a very full description of the mineral springs and a chemical analysis of the waters at Marienbad (now Mariánské Lázne) in today's Czech Republic. These waters are rich in sulphate of soda and carbonate of soda. The attractive frontispiece depicts the town (which consists mostly of hotels) and the other two plates show the Kreuzbrunne and Karolinenquelle. Two old library stamps of Prague religious houses on title. .

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Fouqué").

Nennhausen bei Rathenow, 24. VI. 1818. - 2¼ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to.

Two essays: one upon single vision with two eyes; the other on dew . . . Modern buckram.

London: Archibald Constable & Co., 1818. lxxiv, [2], 439pp., plus 16-page publisher's catalogue. 226 x 138 mm. Modern buckram. Very good. First collected edition. This collection includes the first printing of Wells's "Account of a female of the white race. . . ," which contains the first recognizable statement of the principle of natural selection. In this study of an albino negro woman, Wells assumed a biological evolution of the human species, drawing an analogy between man's selective breeding of domestic animal varieties and nature's selection of varieties of men best suited to various climates. Darwin was not familiar with Wells's paper when he published the first edition of the Origin, but it was later called to his attention, and Darwin paid tribute to Wells's pioneering statement in the historical introduction to the third edition of the Origin.         Voyage of His Majesty's Ship Alceste, along the Coast of Corea, to the Island of Lewchew; with an Account of her subsequent Shipwreck

London: John Murray, 1818. Octavo, with a portrait frontispiece and five coloured aquatints, early owner's name to title-page; light water-stain in lower margins, two leaves stained, yet very good overall, half calf with spine renewed retaining original papered boards. Second and best edition: the Alceste brought Lord Amherst to China to serve as ambassador, and specifically to negotiate the China trade, at the time a matter of dispute between China and Great Britain.M'Leod, who was surgeon on the ship, describes the voyage out, the various calls in the East Indies including touching at Batavia, surveying off Korea, the visit to Okinawa, another to Manila, and the shipwreck off the coast of Sumatra and subsequent rescue from Malay pirates. A brief but interesting interview with Napoleon at St. Helena is also included in the narrative. This was one of the most popular travel books of its time, portraying the Far East to a much wider audience than had been reached by earlier accounts. The idyllic descriptions of Lewchew undoubtedly appealed to the romantic sensibilities of the era. Indeed, buoyed by its success, M'Leod published another work recounting his time as a slaver, A Voyage to Africa, with some Account of the Manners and Customs of the Dahomian People.
