Cachets ex-libris anciens. Dos passé. Mouillure intérieure aux premiers feuillets, rousseurs aux planches.         The life and adventures of an eccentric traveller. With engravings.

York: printed for the author, by M. W. Carrall, 1818. 8vo, (4) + iv + 105 + (1)pp, two whole-page woodcut plates and six smaller woodcuts in the text, original boards, rebacked, entirely uncut. A very good copy. First edition. A charming curiosity, with numerous eccentric but at times delightful vignettes of high and low life. Thus he writes of 'gold': 'In all countries, gold seems to be a traveller, a certain and undeniable talisman, that opens all the avenues which lead either to pleasure or information, and is more sure in its operation, than patience itself. Money will most infallibly extract sincerity from a Frenchman, open the door of hospitality from a Dutchman, and even make a Spanish Don familiar and obliging; this score it behoves everyone who has a penchant for travelling, to line his pocket well with this necessary evil.' And of a gang of gypsies: 'Asses, mules, dogs, tinkers' tools, and potcrates, formed the chief assemblage of this noisy set, amongst which also appeared ragged women, and climbing boys with brushes in their hands, emblems of their trade ...'. The woodcut frontispiece is a delightful view of The Travellers' Embarkation for the Continent>, showing a relevant dockside scene. The identity of the author is vague. He tells us that he was born in York in June 1756, his father being 'an eminent professional gentleman ..... who supported a numerous family by his medical abilities'. Educated by Jesuits in Flanders, Charles returned home in 1777 and eventually became a country apothecary. Of course, the whole thing may actually be fiction.

HAYTIAN PAPERS. A COLLECTION OF THE VERY INTERESTING PROCLAMATIONS AND OTHER OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS, TOGETHER WITH SOME ACCOUNT OF THE RISE, PROGRESS, AND PRESENT STATE OF THE KINGDOM OF HAYTI

Boston, 1818. Original orange printed boards. Spine partially perished, boards lightly warped and soiled. Light foxing and toning. Contemporary inscription on fly leaf. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth box, spine gilt. The first American edition, after the first London edition of 1816, of this work by an African-American author. Prince Saunders (1775-1839) attended Dartmouth and later taught for four years at Boston's African School. In 1816 he became adviser to Haitian Emperor Henri Christophe, where he set up schools and promoted emigration to Haiti for American Blacks. After Christophe was overthrown (and committed suicide) in 1821, Saunders returned to America, but he later emigrated back to Haiti to escape racial persecution. At the time of his death, Saunders was serving as attorney general of Haiti. The fly leaf bears a presentation inscription from John James to Robert Moore, M.D., dated 1818. James was a Quaker merchant, long involved with the abolitionist movements. In the autumn of 1818, while Saunders was in Philadelphia, James introduced him to Spanish ambassador Don Luis Onìs. Both James and Moore, also a fellow Quaker, were party to the 1783 Quaker Anti-Slavery Petition, which was submitted to the Continental Congress in the form of an Address from the Friend's Yearly Meeting. Dr. Moore's wife was also elected the first president of the Female Anti-Slavery Society when it was formed in 1833. Relatively scarce on the market. ABPC shows only two copies of this edition at auction, both appearing over thirty years ago. This copy is truly lovely, in the original boards and with an interesting and important association.

Notes on a Journey in America, from the Coast of Virginia to the Territory of Illinois

156+[4 ads] pages. Folding frontispiece map outlined in contemporary color. Royal Octavo (9 1/4" x 6"). Contemporary paper boards, paper label. (Howes: B468) 4th edition.Morris Birkbeck left his large farm in Surrey, England in order to emigrate to America in the spring of 1817, at age fifty-three. Together with his associate George Flower, he hoped to establish an agricultural settlement providing members of the English working class with new opportunities in America. The men searched Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois for a suitable site. Anti-slavery sentiments ruled out the southern United States, and an aversion to harsh winters led them away from more northerly climates. Finally, they selected the prairie between Bon Pas Creek and the Little Wabash River in Illinois as the site of their settlement. While Birkbeck bought 26,400 acres of land in what is now southeastern Illinois with their pooled funds, Flower returned to England, where he recruited many prospective colonists and sent them to the United States. In March 1818 Flower returned to America with agricultural implements, seeds, and animals for breeding, as well as about fifty new immigrants. Birkbeck and Flower named their settlement Albion, an ancient term synonymous with England. It included what was probably the earliest library in the Illinois Territory. In 1817 and 1818 Morris Birkbeck wrote two books, Letters from Illinois, and Notes on a Journey from the Coast of Virginia to the Territory Illinois, which helped to bring public attention to the Albion settlement and attract new immigrants. Each book described the bountiful opportunities available in the American West, and became popular in the United States and Europe. In 1819 Morris Birkbeck organized the Agricultural Society of Illinois. Albion's colonists practiced scientific agriculture, improving livestock through selective breeding and writing tracts to inform settlers of ways to improve crop yields. In about 1819 Birkbeck and Flower experienced a falling out, and subsequently transacted all business through intermediaries. Morris Birkbeck drowned on June 4, 1825, while attempting to swim his horse across the flooded Fox River. Condition:Spine and corners professionally repaired, spine label faded and chipped, previous owner's name on front paste down, some soiling. Some pencil underlining. Map complete with a tear with no loss, else a very good copy.

[A series of 12 British Acts of Parliament concerning whaling, mostly in Greenland and the Davis Strait]

London: John Baskett [and others], printers, 1818. 12 works, folio. (12 1/2 x 8 inches, and smaller). Disbound or stitched A fascinating series spanning the whole of the period when whaling was carried out on a successful commercial basis in the waters off Greenland. After an abortive start by the South Sea Company between 1724 and 1732, the British whaling fleet operated off Greenland and the Davis Strait throughout the remainder of the 18th century, with increasing success due to a large degree to the succession of bounties granted to ship owners by the British Government. The present selection of acts of parliament includes a number concerning the bounty: the first, dated 16th January 1732 makes law "that a Bounty [will] be paid on the Return of every Ship [of 200 tons and over] imployed by His Majesty's Subjects in the Whale Fishery". For the bounty to be paid, certain stringent criteria had to be met; these increased as the century progressed. By the time of the last Act in the present group (March 1818) the Greenland whalers were reporting declining catches and were already beginning to turn their attention to other whaling grounds, i.e. largely in the Pacific and Antarctic. This group offers and interesting series of snapshots of the industry during its most productive century. The acts comprise: 1. An Act for encouraging the Greenland Fishery. 1732. Stitched, later wrappers. Exemption from duty extended for a nine year period. 2. An Act for the further Encouragment of the Whale Fishery carried on by His Majesty's British Subjects. 1733. Stitched, later wrappers. The introduction of a bounty for ships over 200 tons. 3. An Act for continuing the several Laws therein mentioned ... [including] granting a further Bounty for all Ships employed in the Whale Fishery during the present War; for exempting Harponers and others ... from being impressed... [No date but circa 1750]. Spine reinforced. The bounty raised by a third, other measures to help the trade. 4. An Act for granting a additional Bounty on Ships employed in the Greenland and Whale Fishery, for a limited time. [No adte but circa 1761]. Disbound. The increased bounty confirmed for another five years. 5.An Act for further continuing several Acts ... for the Encouragement of the Whale Fishery.. 1768. Stitched. 6. An Act for the better Support and Establishment of the Greenland and Whale Fishery. 1771. Stitched. The rules about the amount of bounty to be paid has changed, with additional laws concerning vessels of American origin, exemption from duty extended to include the Gulf of St. Lawrence, certain members of a whaler's crew to be exempt from being pressed into service in the Royal Navy, etc. 7.An Act to explain and amend Two Acts made ... with respect to the Limits of the Greenland Seas and Davis's Streights ... and to enlarge the Time for the Return of the Vessels employed in the Whale Fisheries. 1780. Stitched. 8. An Act for granting an additional Bounty on Ships employed in the Greenland and Whale Fishery, for a limited Time. 1782. Disbound. The bounty retained for a further five years. 9. An Act for allowing Vessels employed in the Greenland Whale Fishery, to complete their full Number of Men at certain Ports, for the Present Season. 1805. Spine strengthened. Whaling ships permitted to call in to ports in Scotland, the Orkneys and the Shetland Islands to find men to complete their crews. 10. An Act for allowing, until the Signature of Preliminary Articles of Peace, Vessels ... to complete their full Number of Men at certain ports. 1806. Spine strenghtened. An extension of the previous act. 11. An Act to revive and continue [for five years] several Laws... 1815. Strengthened spine. Several prvious acts re-confirmed. 12. An Act to amend an Act ... so far as it relates to the Oaths thereby required... 1818. Unbound. Concerns the oaths required from owners/captains before the bounty due would be released to them.

[A Series of Picturesque Views of the River Thames. From the drawings of Wm. Havell. Dedicated to the commissioners of Thames navigation, by ... Robt. Havell]

[London: Robert Havell, 1818. Large folio. (22 7/8 x 17 3/4 inches). 12 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Robert Havell after William Havell, each with black ruled border at the edge of the image and a buff wash border, on thin card, all on guards. Expertly bound to style in dark green straight-grained morocco, covers with fine decorative border composed from fillets and an arabesque roll-tool of stylized foliage, spine in eight compartments with double raised bands, the bands highlighted in gilt, lettered in the second and fourth compartments, the others with repeat decoration in gilt made up from various small tools, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges A very fine copy of this important series of Thames views: a visual essay in the picturesque from one of the great watercolour landscape artists of the time, with plates by Audubon's engraver. The publication of the present work, present here in its rare second edition, marked the start of a long series of important publications by Robert Havell that were to culminate with his work on Audubon's Birds of America. The British Dictionary of National Biography describes William Havell as being "one of the best earlier painters in watercolour," an artist of the highest calibre whose images are "distinguished by pure and delicate colour." Born in 1782 in Reading, England, he traveled widely in his search for subjects: Wales, the Lake District, Europe and eight years in India and Burma. However, the present series drawn from the river that flowed through his home town is arguably his best work. The panoramic views betray the artist's intimate understanding of his subject, he ably captures both the river as a calm focus for scenes of great picturesque beauty, and the river as a vital highway for transport and trade. The plates, here bound without the title, offer the viewer a visual journey: from Oxford and the famous skyline of the Colleges, through the busy market town of Abingdon, to Wallingford (a view taken in 1810 whilst the bridge was being repaired), then two wonderful truly panoramic views of the Thames Valley, one viewed from higher ground at Streatley, and a second of Caversham Bridge near Reading. The journey continues with bucolic views near Park Place in Oxfordshire, the weir viewed from Marlow bridge and Clifden spring and woods, near Maidenhead. Taplow is next, then an interesting view of Windsor Castle before the renovations showing a skyline that is strange yet familiar. The journey ends with a fine view of Datchet Ferry near Windsor and a spectacular view of Staines church in newly emerged sunlight, whilst the rain clouds behind are lightened by a beautifully observed double rainbow.

Paris: Firmin Didot, 1818. Large folio. (28 3/4 x 21 inches). Letterpress title (verso blank), 1p. dedication to Louis XVIII (verso blank), 1p. 'avant-propos' (verso blank), 30ll. explanatory text (all but two printed recto only, one leaf preceding each plate). 30 fine uncoloured aquatint plates by and after Damame-Démartrais. (The 12th plate, a view of Notre-Dame, with a repaired tear in the outer margin). Contemporary blue/green straight-grained morocco-backed paper-covered boards, the flat spine divided into six compartments by double gilt fillets, lettered in the second compartment, old repairs to spine A beautiful and rare large-scale work of views of Paris and its environs. According to Dulau's 1828 catalogue this work was originally sold in parts. They offered the present uncoloured issue at £20 (item 12456), whilst the issue with the plates printed in colours and finished by hand (item 12457) was on sale at £40. An idea of the book's current rarity can be garnered from the fact that OCLC list only a single copy: that in the Victoria & Albert Museum's "National Art Library" in London, and even the distinguished Bobins collection contains only a fragmentary work (with 5 plates in two states). Damame-Démartrais is now best known for his Collection complete des divers jardins et points de vue des maisons de plaisance imperiales de Russie.. .. [Paris, 1811]: a result of the nine years he spent living in Moscow and St.Petersburg between 1796 and 1805. Paris born, Damame-Démartrais was apparently taught by David but is now celebrated for his drawings and aquatints. The present work, dedicated to King Louis XVIII, was prompted by the artist's wish to record the new open vistas in Paris and its environs: each of the beautiful large-scale plates is accompanied by brief text which gives relevant details of the subject. The artist also notes in the 'avant-propos' that this work fills a gap, as there were no other comparable books of views of Paris and its environs. The majority of the plates are of places in Paris, but, as the title suggests, there are also a significant minority of the views of beautiful locations outside the city. Cf. II: [2], 304, [40] pp.; 49 plts.. 1818–23 First edition, illustrated with a total of 62 engraved plates. The illustrator who portrayed many of the above, John Preston Neale, was an architectural draftsman and landscape painter "best remembered for his views of the nation's country houses, churches, and public buildings," according to the Oxford DNB.

Cachets ex-libris anciens. Dos passé. Mouillure intérieure aux premiers feuillets, rousseurs aux planches.         The Travels of Marco Polo, a Venetian, in the Thirteenth Century, Being a Description by that Early Traveller of Remarkable Places and Things in the Eastern Part of the World

London: Printed for the Author by Cox and Baylis and sold by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1818. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. First edition of this translation (from the Italian), the most complete to appear in English to date, described by Lowndes (Part VII, p. 1907) as "an elegant an faithful translation." pp lxxx, 781, [1] (Contents of the Introduction), errata leaf, with notice of author's other works on verso, folding map as frontispiece. Lacks half title. Later nineteenth century quarter leather over marbled boards; decorative stamping and gilt rules on spine. Some abrasion to outer paper on boards. Binding sound, contents very clean. Bookplate of Vice Admiral William Young (1761-1847) on front pastedown. Young was a decorated officer of the Royal Navy and friend of British royalty who served in the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Traveling with his father and uncle, Marco Polo left Venice in 1271 and spent more than two decades in the East (including the Middle East, Central Asia, China, and the coastal regions of Japan, India, and Southeast Asia), returning in 1295. The chronicle of his travels, dictated while he was imprisoned in Genoa, gave Europeans their first detailed glimpse into the life and culture of the East and inspired the travels of Christopher Columbus and other explorers. Marsdens's substantive introduction to this edition includes a life of Marco Polo as well as a detailed review of manuscript and printed editions of the work in Latin, Italian, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, English, and Dutch.         Anti-Israel.
