It was this book that induced Fellowes, Spratt, Forbes and Charles Newton, to go to Asia Minor. ? (Dawson, Memoirs of Hydrography., 1885).

Miller, Printer, Noble Street, Cheapside." and with errata leaf in two states. ix, [iv], 207, [1], [4, ads date 1 May 1818]. 8vo. Uncut in original publisher's boards, printed paper title label to spine. Light wear to covers, some sporadic foxing and toning to text. Bookplate. In a custom brown cloth clamshell box. First edition, second issue with imprint on verso of half-title reading "T. Miller, Printer, Noble Street, Cheapside." and with errata leaf in two states. ix, [iv], 207, [1], [4, ads date 1 May 1818]. 8vo. First edition, second issue, a superb copy in original boards of the second of only three lifetime publications by Keats, comprising his longest single sustained poem, famous for its opening line: "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever." So savage and malevolent were the reviews of this poem by Blackwoods and the Quarterly--"Lockhart found it exquisitely funny that an apothecary, a fellow who confessedly knew no Greek, who had to read Homer in a translation, should venture on a classic theme" (MacGillivray)--that Keats' supporters thereafter blamed the reviewers for Keats' early death. This copy has the second issue imprint to the verso of the half-title "T. Miller, Printer, Noble Street, Cheapside" and includes both states of the errata leaf (pp. xi-xii) with 5-line errata and 1-line erratum. MacGillivray A2; Ashley III:13; Tinker 1419; Hayward 232

The Cottage in the Wood; or, The Art of Becoming Rich and Happy. 2nd edn. 18mo.

Bradford: T. Inkersley. 1818 - Engr. front. after F. James, sculpted by E. Stather; sl. offsetting on titlepage. Later 19th century full crimson crushed morocco, triple ruled gilt borders, raised bands, gilt compartments & dentelles, green & brown morocco labels. Bookplate of George John Armytage. v.g. 69pp. Brontë's tale emphasises the virtues of Christian conviction and restraint, and shows that a happy and loving relationship can only be achieved when the teachings of God have been truly accepted. Mary, the heroine, steadfastly rebuts the constant approaches of the dashing Mr Bower, as she cannot reconcile her absolute faith with his religious indifference. Only when he has accepted the Gospel can their lives be shared and true happiness be attained. Mr Bower, despite losing his fortune, becomes 'rich' through spiritual enlightenment, and the familial comforts that follow. In his preamble, Brontë emphasises his commitment to presenting the truth of human existence, and advises the reader against the artifice and deception apparent in the literature of the day. He is in no doubt as to the damaging nature of the current literary trends: 'The sensual novelist and his admirer, are beings of depraved appetites and sickly imaginations, who have learnt the art of self-tormenting, are diligently and zealously employed in creating an imaginary world, which they can never inhabit . The romantic author, overstepping the bounds of probability, will freely indulge in the miraculous . transforming beggars into kings and queens, and kings and queens into beggars . extracting the most unqualified approbation, and the tenderest sympathy from the pusilanimous reader, who has never yet been wise enough to admire the language of truth .' This remains one of the Brontë family's most difficult titles: two copies are recorded on COPAC, at the BL and Leeds, and there are no records of the title at auction. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Narrative of an expedition to explore the River Zaire, usually called the Congo, in South Africa, in 1816, under the direction of Captain J.K. Tuckey, R.N. To which is added the journal of Professor Smith; some general observations on the country and its inhabitants; and an appendix: containing the natural history of that part of the kingdom of Congo through which Zaire flows.

Murray London 1818 - First edition. BECKFORD COPY WITH NOTES. 4to., lxxxii, 496pp., 2 pages ads at end, folding map, 13 engraved plates, one coloured, light toning and foxing to plates as usual, original pink boards, morocco label, light wear, an excellent copy. William Beckford's copy with 2 pages of pencil notes in manuscript at beginning, consisting of 43 lines. The first scientific expedition to the River Congo. An Irish naval officer and hydrographer, Tuckey (1776-1816) was appointed by John Barrow, then second secretary to the Admiralty, to take an expedition to the mouth of the River Congo (Zaire) to see whether it represented the outflow of the Niger into the Atlantic, and more fancifully might provide a route to the riches of the highlands of east Africa. Tuckey sailed form Deptford at the end of February 1816 aboard the Congo. The ship reached Embomma (Boma), the chief port for the river, at the beginning of August. Tuckey continued up river until he reached the cataract of Yellala at which point he had to leave the ship and travel overland with a small party of seamen, scientists, and local porters. One by one the expedition fell prey to Yellow Fever, and after a strike by the porters Tuckey was forced to retreat. The porters fled, supplies were stolen, and when Tuckey got back to the Congo he found that Yellow Fever has decimated the crew. Tuckey himself succumbed to illness and died at the beginning of October, aboard the Dorothy, the sister ship to the Congo. Of the fifty-four passengers and crew who set out, only nineteen survived - altogether a disastrous expedition. The Congo would remain unexplored until the expeditions of Stanley some sixty years later. Gay 3059. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Friend: A Series of Essays

London: Printed for Rest Fenner, 1818. Second edition. ix, [i], [ii, errata], 356 pp. 8vo. Original muslin boards, black morocco spine label. Rebacked, preserving spine. bookplate. Second edition. ix, [i], [ii, errata], 356 pp. 8vo. Presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title: "To Robert Jameson, in testimony of sincere and affectionate respect from S.T. Coleridge. August, 1821, Highgate." Jameson was a close childhood friend of Coleridge's eldest son, Hartly. Derwent Coleridge describes Jameson in his memoirs of his brother: "One friend he [Hartley] had, a resident in the town, though not a schoolfellow, Robert Jameson, to whom he afterwards addressed a series of beautiful sonnets; but with this exception he had, strictly speaking, no mates, and formed no friendships." At the time of this inscription, Hartley was staying with Jameson, now a lawyer, and he wrote three sonnets to his friend, his first attempts in the form. He prefaced the sonnets "To a Friend," which were published in his 1833 Poems, with a note identifying Jameson as "the favorite companion of my boyhood, the active friend and sincere counselor of my youth." In 1828 Jameson, with James Gillman, edited the 3-volume 1828 Pickering edition of Coleridge's Poems. Wise, Coleridge 22. Provenance: Robert Jameson (presentation from the author)

        Antique Print-NORTH AMERICA-SOUTH-CANADA-Mannert-c. 1818

- Scarce 1796 map of north and south America by C. Mannert. Depicts the Americas shortly following the close of the American Revolutionary War in 1783. The whole is color coded according to political conventions, with British controlled territories in Red, Spanish dominions in yellow, French in green, and the fledgling United States in blue-green. Mountains and other topographical features are rendered by hachure, making Mannert's 1796 map one of the first to employ this mapping convention. Throughout, Mannert has dedicated significant attention to the naming of various American Indian nations including the Sioux, Otter, Sack, Creek (Crik), Miami, Paduca, Arkansas, and others. Cartographically Mannert references the work of Aaron Arrowsmith published in the same year, though it is far from a copy with numerous refinements and advancements in evidence. Mannert recognizes the United States east of the Mississippi, south of the Great Lakes, and north of Florida. None of the original states are identified, however the regions of Carolina, Georgia, and 'Kentuke' are noted. This map's most interesting element is most likely its treatment of the western parts of North America. At the extreme west the discoveries of Captain Cook are evident in the well-defined coastlines as far north as Alaska. Here the Bering Strait has been renamed Cook's Strasse. Drakes harbor, the mysterious location where Sir Frances Drake repaired his ships (and claimed New Albion for England) on his historic circumnavigation, is here identified with San Francisco Bay. Further inland the cartography becomes increasingly vague with places like Teguayo, Quivara, and Cenis (all remnants early ingressions into this region by the likes of Coronado and de Soto) appearing throughout. Teguayo, a semi-mythical kingdom of gold and wealth imagined by the nefarious Spanish count and governor of New Mexico Pansilo de Navarez, is attached to an embryonic Great Salt Lake - no doubt drawn and adapted from Escalante's journals. Further north, near today's U.S. - Canada border another lake appears - this one much larger and labeled 'See.' This unusual body of water is most likely a remnant of the mythical 'Sea of the West,' a speculative lake proposed by 18th century French theoretical cartographers. Further north still we can see traces of the exploratory work of MacKenzie and Hearne, both fur traders whose overland treks in northwestern Canada along the MacKenzie and Coppermine Rivers, respectively, finally ended speculation about a river passage to the Pacific via the Hudson Bay. At the opposite extreme of this map South America appears well mapped with significant inland detail throughout. Copperplate engraving / etching with contemporary outline hand colouring on hand laid paper. Made by 'Conrad Mannert' after an anonymous artist. Conrad Mannert (April 17, 1756 - September 27, 1834) was a German historian and engraver active in Nuremburg during the later part of the 18th century. Mannert studied classical history and geography in Nuremburg. In 1784 he took an academic position at the Sebaldusschule and in 1788 moved to the Ägidiusgymnasium. Later, as he became more prominent in his filed, Mannert worked as a historian at the University of Altdorf, the University of Wurzburg, and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Today Mannert is best known for his historic studies regarding the placement and naming of early Greek and Roman cities. His ten volume Geographie der Griechen und Römer, published between 1795 and 1825, remains to this day the definitive text on the subject. Cartographically, Mannert is known for his study of the Peutinger Table as well as his engraving work for the firm of Schneider and Weigel. As with his historic re

Women; or, Pour et Contre. A tale. By the author of ?Bertram?, &c.

Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne & Co., for Archibald Constable & Co., &c. 1818 - FIRST EDITION. 3 vols. Half titles. Contemp. half olive green calf, gilt spines, maroon leather labels; a little rubbed. Armorial bookplate of Samuel Raymond vol. I; neatly removed from vols II & III. A good-plus copy. Sadleir 1670; Wolff 4653. Women, was Maturin?s fourth novel, but like those that preceded it, struggled to achieve broad recognition when first published. Set in Dublin in 1813, it is in many ways a conventional love story, centring on the relationships of Charles De Courcy with two women who are rivals for his affections; Eva and Zaira. It has since been considered in a more favourable light, gaining particular praise for its insightful portrayal of Dublin society, and for its ?biting and perceptive analysis of Evangelicalism? and the ?hypocrisy it engendered?         Regeneration de la nature vegetale. Second and best edition

Didot, Paris 1818 - The Founder of French Ecological Thought Rauch, Francois Antoine (c. 1777-1837). Regeneration de la nature vegetale. . . . 2 vols. 8vo. xxxi, [5], 502; 398pp. Paris: Didot, 1818. 198 x 124 mm. Quarter sheep, gilt, c. 1818, a little rubbed. Slight dampstaining & foxing affecting a few leaves at front & back, but otherwise fine. Second & Best Edition, revised and expanded from the 1802 original, which had the title Harmonie hydro-vegetale et meteorologique. A civil engineer, Rauch's concern for the environment stemmed from his worries about deforestation, which not only affected the agriculture and 'scenery' of the countryside, but also the whole ecological balance of crops, flora and fauna, and human interaction with the ecological system. In a wide-ranging discussion, Harmonie Hydro-Végétale discussed the interrelationships between climate, terrain and vegetation, and suggested ways to establish a state of 'harmony' between the environment and man. He included topics such as the ecological balance found in mountain regions, and suggested in the final chapter, that a ministerial department "of the interior" be set up in order to monitor ecological issues and supervise relevant matters at a local level were included. Rauch espoused many ideas to achieve such a 'harmony', including plans for monumental avenues flanked by grand trees and country roads edged by fruit trees. He was also particularly concerned with cemeteries and graves, considering that the dead would rest easier in a 'natural' environment and recommending, therefore, that they be buried in places where nature still remains. During the intervening gap of sixteen years before this subsequent publication Rauch made many further observations which resulted in this considerably revised, augmented and updated work. His attention turned to the idea of 'regeneration' to create a 'harmony of the elements'. Written from a viewpoint entirely in agreement with the modern ecology movement, the work argues that it is necessary to reverse the process of human destruction of the environment, particularly the world-wide destruction of forests, in order to return the planet to a state better supportive of life. Rauch begins with a consideration of the relationship of forests to weather conditions, surveys the effects of deforestation world-wide on climate, and animal and human populations, and sets out in several chapters steps to be taken: what sorts of vegetation should be planted where, renewal of water sources, and the establishment of governmental agencies in France and all over the globe to observe the environment and take action. He urges the agencies, for example, to consider changes over short periods of time ("to what extant animals and birds are scarcer in the last thirty years" in a particular area), and to attempt regulation of factory fuel sources. In his closing argument he urges the obligation "to conserve the noble economy," and "to conserve that from which we benefit." Most histories of conservation and ecology place the actual begininng of modern ecology fifty years after Rauch, who does not appear in our ecology or even general biographical references; however, Regeneration de la nature vegetale should be considered one of the pioneering works in the field, perhaps the earliest to sound so many themes of importance today.         Seder Haggadah shel pesa%

Fiorda [i.e. Fürth]: Isaac Zirndorfer, 559, 1818 Fiorda [i.e. Fürth]: Isaac Zirndorfer, 559, 1818. . Contemporary half leather. G+. "8º, (162x100mm.); 24 h.- // Contemporary half leather bibding; coloured edges. Top of the front board joint opened. Bottom of the spine broked. A little foxed and stained.- // Prov.: Two handwritten exlibris on verso of the last page. Sam. Nath Strauss and, dated in 1830, Dispecker . Prayer book for the Séder del Pésaj, the Jewish passover meal in which, through a well-established ritual, the story of the exodus from Egypt is transmitted to descendants praising and thanking Yahweh for the liberation of the Hebrew people. Despite our efforts, there is little we can say about this imprint(1). Just we can say that was printed in Fürth -Fiorda in Hebrew, the focus of the Hebrew press in Bavaria, by Itzig (Isaac) ben David Zindorfer (1747-1826) who, as it has been happening in Europe since the sixteenth century in a sort of guild socialization for survival, was married at 1774 with the widow of other printer(2), becoming responsible of the atelier. Zirndorfer has his business at Schindelhof Street(3) where, besides the press, he had a trade of sale and purchase of second hand Hebrew books. The printer mark on title-page, a quite simple woodcut crudely carved with only the anagram of IZ lettering, lead to think the print was well before the period of Prussian domination (1796-1806), when he used a copper engraving much more elaborate, with IDZ lettering enclosed in a fringe crowned by the Prussian imperial eagle. It seems that in that previous stage he signed Itzig [Izik] Zirndorf. Nevertheless, the foot print shoa a date that we think is 559, that is 1818, or 1819. So, the printer mark would be surprisingly latest in fact. We have no ability to inform about which of the several Haggadah traditions is involved with this prayer book that we are offering, but perhaps someone interested could solve it by checking its content with Joseph Tavory, The JPS Commentary on the Haggadah: Historical Introduction, Translation, and Commentary, Jewish Publication Society, 2008 , which shows very effectively the historical development and the peculiarities of the content of the different variants. (1) We have been not able to contrast the fundamental source Isaac Yudlow: The Haggadah Thesaurus: Bibliography of Passover Haggadot From the Beginning of Hebrew Printing until 1960.- Jerusalem: The Magnes Press, The Hebrew University, 1997. (2) Hayyim ben Zevi Hirsch, dead in 1772, had begun printing in 1737. His widow managed it for two years and, in 1774, was married with Itzik David Zirndorfer, and their descendants remained presses active until 1868. (3) So is stated in a footnote at the end of some of his imprints, as in Seder seli%ot mi-kol ha-shanah, from 1787, available in the library of the Center for Judaic Studies, University of Pennsylvania."

Illustrated natural history & gardening manuscript commonplace book

ON RESERVEAn extensive and attractively illustrated natural history commonplace book dating from the 1830s and 40s, likely compiled by an individual living in Cornwall who may have been connected with the Royal Institution of Cornwall. Much of the content relates to insects and plants, and in addition to the 131 pages of manuscript text there are 27 original pencil and ink sketches and 90 tipped-in watercolour illustrations. The book includes 12 pages of clippings, most from the proceedings of the Royal Institution of Cornwall, a scientific society that was founded in Truro in 1818 as The Cornwall Literary and Philosophical Institution, and changed its name in 1821 after receiving royal patronage. Among the subjects discussed in these clippings are a long piece on seabirds and their wanton destruction by recreational hunters and egg gatherers ("Sketches of the Sea Birds Off Flamborough Head"); flying fish; a detailed description of how to press and mount marine algae; seashells and other marine creatures; donations to the Institution's museum; growing fuchsias ("this useful plant is, I fear, seldom employed now for decorating the greenhouse and conservatory"); and a visit to Newquay with an eye to the natural environment, including geology, plants, and fossils, as well as local industry and history. The manuscript portions of this commonplace book cover a variety of subjects, with information copied from a number of sources, though they are not usually cited. The book opens with a watercolour of a passion flower and eight lines from Thomas Ragg's twelve-book poem The Deity (originally published in 1834) beginning, "Oh Nature with delight I gaze on thee!" followed by a passage on gardening and two long sections on the practice of natural history, all with a focus on the mental and moral benefits of the study of God's creation. There are philosophical musings on nature throughout, but the majority of the content is practical - advice for gardeners, information about the identification and habits of animals species, and a few receipts for food and household products. Among the sections of practical home and garden advice are: specifications for bird cages; information about repotting plants, including a table of pot sizes; instructions "to hasten the blooming of flowers"; substitutes for bell glasses; disbudding flowering plants; propagating cuttings, long passages on cultivating fuchsias, cyclamen, roses, gladiolas, lobelias, pansies and a few other plants; how to manage greenhouses; getting rid of slugs; and instructions for creating vegetable mould, potato water, and lime water for fertilising gardens, and a month-by-month guide to activities to complete in the garden. Passages on the appearance, behaviour, and habitats of animals include, insects and spiders, garden pests, frogs and toads, corals and sponges, birds, and harvest mice. The most attractive portions of the manuscript are the numerous pages of delicately illustrated natural history text. There is a four page passage on spiders with seven pencil and ink illustrations, including two garden spiders in their web, a spider's foot, silk up-close, and the unique use of silk to float by the gossamar spider. A paragraph on the harvest mouse is accompanied by a delightful sketch of a mouse next to its nest built in tall grass. A six page chapter on oak gall wasps that features eleven accomplished pencil and ink illustrations of gall wasps, galls, and parts of the oak tree. The most extensive and attractive set of text and illustrations is on butterflies and moths. It includes 45 pages of manuscript text and 95 individual tipped-in watercolour depictions of the insects, in full colour and at the same size as they appear in life. Among the most striking are the orange-tipped butterfly, fritillaries, red admiral, peacock eye, purple hair-sheath, nine different hawk moths and their caterpillars (including the death's head, poplar, eyed, madder, elephant, and hummingbird hawk moths), the herald moth, and red underwing moth. Overall a rich and wonderfully illustrated commonplace book illuminating the typical concerns of an amateur naturalist and gardener in England during the first half of the 19th-century. [Cornwall], [c. 1834 through the 1840s]. Quarto. Recently rebound to style in red half morocco and marbled boards, 5 raised bands to spine, green endpapers. 104 leaf manuscript comprising 131 full or nearly-full pages of text in a loose hand with illustrations in pencil and ink, 12 pages with tipped-in news clippings, 27 pencil and ink drawings in the text, and 90 tipped-in watercolour illustrations. A few small white marks and some light rubbing to the binding, occasional light toning and spotting to contents, some offsetting from the illustrations. Very good condition.
