The Naval Achievements of Great Britain. From the Year 1793 to 1817.

London: for J. Jenkins by L. Harrison,, [after 1817]. Folio (358 × 285 mm). Twentieth-century blue crushed morocco by Birdsall, title gilt to spine, raised bands, double gilt ruled panels to the compartments, attractive concentric gilt panels to the boards with large laurel wreath corner-pieces, beaded edge-roll, top edge gilt, others uncut, wide-turn-ins with gilt rolls and laurel wreath corner-pieces, marbled endpapers. Engraved title page with hand-coloured vignette, 55 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Sutherland, Jeakes and Bailey after Whitcombe, all with wove-paper guards, 2 uncoloured etched plans of the Bombardment of Algiers and Battle of Trafalgar. Tips and board-edges lightly rubbed, a few very light markings to rear board, text-leaves slightly toned, a little pale foxing to title, a few trivial spots to text and to margins of a very small number of plates, the images spared, offsetting to guards, sig. X and leaf the containing the etched plans repaired in fore margins. An excellent copy with bright and vivid plates. First edition, early issue, of this magnificent publication, the apogee of the coloured aquatint, illustrating the high-water mark of Britain's maritime hegemony. "As a record of naval events spanning a period of over twenty years [it] has no precedent. At no time prior to 1817 had a publisher attempted such a complete volume of documentary naval prints. It is the quality of accuracy which makes Jenkins so valuable" (Roger Quarm, curator of pictures at the National Maritime Museum, quoted in the introduction to the 1998 facsimile edition). It was disappointingly slow to sell on its first issue in 1817, and Jenkins chose to issue copies as demand necessitated. The text leaves in this copy are watermarked "Whatman 1812" or "Whatman 1816", as in the first issue; the plates are undated but bear the watermark H S & S, seemingly from the 1820s. "The book was reprinted as late as 1840, copies having been seen with watermarks of the date" (Abbey). The very earliest issues can be identified by the title-page vignette remaining uncoloured; otherwise, the key consideration for collectors is the quality of the colouring, which is extremely good in the present copy.

A Geographical Present; Being Descriptions of the Principal Countries of the World; with Representations of the Various Inhabitants in Their Respective Costumes, Beautifully Colored

London: Printed for Darton, Harvey and Darton, 1817. First edition of this popular illustrated guide to the peoples of the world, written for children during the height of England's imperial ambitions. Venning compiled her text from published accounts of explorers, missionaries, and colonists, pairing geographical description with evaluations of national and ethnic character: "Parisians are active and industrious, but light and inconstant," "Copts are generally excellent accountants," the "curiosity [of the Japanese] is excessive: nothing imported by the Europeans can escape it." Sixty copper-engraved plates, each vividly hand-colored, depict the peoples of the world, beginning with a stylish London couple conversing beside the Thames, and concluding in the most remote corner of the New World, Terra del Fuego, where "the dress of both sexes . . . consists only of the skin of a sea-calf, fastened round the shoulders." A near-fine copy of a diverting book, in a handsome contemporary binding. Twelvemo, contemporary full red calf elaborately stamped in gilt and blind, raised bands, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt dentelles, red endpapers, all edges gilt. Sixty hand-colored engraved plates. Ink presentation inscription to Emily Paget (daughter of Waterloo hero Henry Paget, Marquess of Anglesey) on the verso of front free endpaper, ink signature to title page. Joints tender, light edgewear to binding, occasional light foxing to text.

The Lee Priory Press was an early private press, run by Sir Egerton Brydges from 1813-1823. Brydges (1762-1837), born at Wootton Court near Canterbury, was a genealogist (obsessed with the peerage and his vain attempts to claim an extinct barony) and literary scholar. At Lee Priory, near Ickham, Kent Brydges employed printers and compositors to print to a very high quality, early and rare works of literature, especially poetry. These were sold in very small editions of a hundred or less, at high prices. Lee Priory is considered to be the earliest press of the private press movement. KENT POETRY KENT

Barnabok, Hans Kongl. Stockholm, Olof Grahn, 1817.

1817. (2), 106, (4) pp. With 20 plates, of which 19 coloured in contemporary hand. Bound in modern full green calf with gilt titles to spine, new endpapers. "Fifth, improved edition", a charmingly hand-coloured example of this children's ABC dedicated to the young Crown Prince of Sweden himself. The first edition appeared in 1780, based on the 1772 Neues A.B.C. of Christian Felix Weisse. The work appears to be in a complete state, with handcoloured title page, dedication leaf, 14 leaves illustrating the alphabet alongside coloured vignettes of domestic life, and 3 (of 4) tables of every-day objects on which to practice one's newly-acquired skills. A double-page engraved plate of the entire alphabet bound at the rear of the work probably represents 'Tab. 3'. - Repairs to margins of several plates, alongside occasional old tape repairs to rear and the odd closed tear; a few words torn from Register. Preface dated 1816 bound in after plates but before text, with 4 leaves of what appears to be the preface to the 1780 edition bound in at the end of the work. This ed. not in Cotsen. Only complete institutional copy located in the Royal Library of Sweden. Willke, pp. 118, 122. Not in most standard children's references.

The Costume of the Hereditary States of the House of Austria, displayed in fifty coloured engravings; with descriptions, and an introduction, by . de Moleville. Translated by R.C. Dallas

printed for William Miller by William Bulmer and Co, London 1817 - (13 7/8 x 10 1/2 inches). Titles and text in French and English. 50 hand-coloured aquatint plates by William Poole (12) or William Ellis (38), some printed in bistre, others in blue. Contemporary full dark green straight grained morocco, covers bordered in gilt, spines with wide semi-raised bands in six compartments, tooled in gilt on each band, lettered in the second compartment, the others with a repeat decoration in blind, blue endpapers, gilt edges A charming, beautifully-illustrated and informative survey of the diverse array of costume to be found in Austria, Hungary, Bohemia and elsewhere. The Marquis Bertrand de Moleville, a staunch royalist born in Toulouse, served as the minister of marine for Louis XVI and tried unsuccessfully to arrange for the escape of the doomed king before fleeing to England himself in late 1792. The present work is one of a number that he contributed to during his exile. He too returned to France in 1814, but did not enjoy the confidence of the new king. The 'advertisement' for the present work notes that the beautiful aquatints are after plates in "a collection lately published in Vienna . We have to boast, however of the talents of much more skilful engravers: we have arranged our plates in a better order, and enriched the descriptions of them with many historical, geographical, topographical, and statistical remarks, not to be found in the German [sic] work, which give to this [work] a new degree of interest and utility."
