Melincourt. By the author of Headlong Hall ? In Three Volumes

London: For T. Hookham Jun. and Co. Old Bond Street; and Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, Paternoster Row, 1817. First edition. Half titles present, D6 a cancel. 3 vols. 12mo. Dark blue green textured cloth over boards, printed paper spine labels (minor chipping), bottom edge slightly trimmed, others uncut. Fine. Rare Peacock Satire in Early Cloth Binding "ANTHELIA MELINCOURT, at the age of twenty-one, was mistress of herself and of ten thousand a year, and of a very ancient and venerable castle in one of the wildest valleys in Westmoreland." The opening line of Melincourt is indisputably a rejoinder to Austen's celebrated gambit in Pride and Prejudice (1813), and Peacock's sharpest satire of wealth, fortune-hunting, and politics, recounts the fortunes of the heiress and her social climbing friends, as well as the bon-vivant Sir Telegraph Paxarent, his philosophical friend Mr. Forester, and the career of Sir Oran Haut-ton - a "specimen of the natural and original man" and an orang-utan of high fashion, "heightened by a pair of enormous whiskers, and the folds of a vast cravat" - who is elected as one of the MPs for the venerable rotten borough of Onevote.A rare work that is almost invariably seen in worn half leather bindings, the present copy of Melincourt is in a nicely preserved near contemporary binding of dark green cloth, with printed spine labels (the publication date is too early by a few years for this to to be publisher's cloth), a very handsome triple-decker with good provenance. A note from Esther Potter to Marilyn Butler quotes Victor Schulderer of the British Museum who called Meyerstein (1889-1952) a "poet, novelist and musician outstandingly gifted and eccentric".

By Gaetano Marchetti Tomassi. 75, [1], 34 pp. Illustrated with 6 etched folding plates. 8vo., 202 x 142 mm, bound in nineteenth-century Italian vellum. Fuglino: Feliciano Campitelli, 1817. Second Edition. Dedicated to Czar Alexander I of Russia. Count Gaetano Marchetti Tomassi (1774-1857), born in Foligno near Perugia, was an amateur mathematician who experimented with various methods of squaring the circle, the results of which are documented in this text. The first part of the book concentrates on circles, the second part contains a discussion on conic sections, and part three elucidates his research on various curves. However, the real interest and value of Tomassi's book is found in the fourth part which discusses his researches "on a mode of navigating under water." In 34 pages the author describes a crude model of a submarine that he has invented. It protected a man while navigating submerged for long periods of time. Tomassi also alludes to the military possibilities of a submarine, and he states that classical artillery could be preserved dry and functionable in his submarine. The author cites in a footnote on page 3 of Parte Quarta that a first edition of this work exists dated 1814, however, no copy of that edition is listed in OCLC, and no sources turned up a copy anywhere. No copies of either edition at auction as listed in ABPC. Cat. Weil 6, 275: "very uncommon ... seems to be very rare ...".

Contemporary quarter morocco over marbled boards, gilt spines with green morocco lettering labels. Vol. II hinges repaired. Provenance: Joyce Cary (bookplate); Shadmell Court Library (armorial bookplate). Lady Caroline Lamb's notorious and deliriously written roman à clé, to exact her revenge on Byron for her seduction and abandonment. When our protagonist Calantha encounters Ruthven Glenarvon (i.,e., Byron), her helplessness is described thus: "The eye of the rattle-snake, it has been said, once fixed upon its victim, overpowers it with terror and alarm: the bird, thus charmed, dares not attempt its escape; it sings its last sweet lay; flutters its little pinions in the air, then falls like a shot before its destroyer, unable to fly from his fascination. Calantha bowed, therefore with the rest, pierced to the heart at once by the maddening power that destroys alike the high and low; but she liked not the wily turn of his eye, the contemptuous sneer of his curling lip, the soft passionless tones of his voice ... Lithographic title, 22 pp. Illustrated with a lithographic title-page and 6 handcoloured engravings. Small folio, 310 x 210 mm, bound in contemporary light blue wrappers in a new blue cloth folding box. The other four being at Kansas, Leipzig, Strasbourg and the Bibliothèque Nationale. The painstaking detail required by the colourest for each engraving most likely led to so few ever being published. This copy is lacking the final uncoloured plates, probably as issued. Minutoli was the tutor to Prince Karl of Prussia, whose stamp is on the title-page, and whose father was the dedicatee. A proof copy dated 1815 is in the Corning Museum library which has only two plates, of which one is coloured.

North American Sylva; or A Description of The Forest Trees of The United States, Canada and Nova Scotia, not described in the Work of F. Andrew Michaux. Three volumes. xii, 136; [2], 123, [1]; [2], 148, [4] pp. Illustrated with 121 hand-coloured lithographic plates. Royal 8vo., 246 x 160 mm, bound in matching publisher's brown boards with gilt-stamped illustration of flowering sweet pea on front board, gilt lettered spines, yellow grazed endpapers. Preserved in a green slipcases and case. Philadelphia: Smith & Wistar, 1849. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition in English, of Michaux's Sylva together with an Early Edition of Nuttall's Sylva in matching publisher's bindings. A spectacular set of the most important work on American trees prior to the twentieth century. "It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind, and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty" (Sabin). Michaux's portion of the work was originally printed in Paris in 1817-19. In 1825, the 156 copperplates were purchased by the geologist William Maclure who brought them to the United States. A first American edition (including Nuttall's additional volumes) was eventually published between 1841 and 1852. François André Michaux (1770-1855) based his Sylva on extensive travels in the eastern half of America, and those of his father, from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures, who aided them in their work and travels. His book was first published with a Philadelphia imprint in 1817-19, although actually printed in Paris, where the stipple plates were engraved as well. These plates were executed by the great French flower painters, Pierre-Joseph Redouté and his associate, Pancrace Bessa. Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859), one of the most intrepid American naturalists of his day, travelled extensively in the Mississippi Valley and the far west in the 1820s and 1830s gathering botanical specimens. His work, designed to supplement that of Michaux, covers eastern species missed by the Frenchman and new species that Nuttall encountered in the Midwest and Rocky Mountains. Nuttall's Sylva first appeared in Philadelphia in 1842-49 and contains 121 plates, same as in the issue offered herewith. Spotting to text as in nearly all copies, fragile heads to spines chipped. Very scarce, especially in this condition in uniform American publisher's bindings. Raphael, An Oak Spring Sylva, No. 20. Bennett 76. Stafleu, Taxonomic Literature 842, 929. Sabin 48695 & 56351.

Medal for the Voyage of the Uranie

Paris: Puymaurin & Andrieu, 1817. Bronze medal, 41 mm, fine. Obverse: profile portrait of Louis XVIII. Reverse: "Hémisphère Austral. Physique Astronomie. La Corvette l'Uranie Mr. Ls. de Freycinet Commandt... S.A.R.M. Le Duc d'Angoulême, Amiral de France...." Medal for the departure of Freycinet on the Uranie. An excellent bronze example of the medal struck to commemorate the sailing of the Uranie for Australia and the Pacific in 1817 under Freycinet. The Uranie landed at Shark Bay on the West Coast of Australia, on 12 September 1818, where an observatory was set up. After visiting Timor and the Sandwich Islands they reached Port Jackson in November 1818. They left on Boxing Day that year on a course for Cape Horn but on 13 February 1820 the ship was wrecked off the Falkland Islands. However all the crew and most of the records of the voyage and natural history specimens were saved and the voyage was completed on the Physicienne. The voyage was organised by the French government to make observations on geography, magnetism and meteorology, and became noteworthy for its natural history discoveries. This scientific bent is reflected in the detailed lettering on the obverse, which has the main caption 'Hemisphere Austral. Physique Astronomie', and also notes that Freycinet's voyage was commissioned by the two most important French naval figures of his day, Louis-Antoine d'Artois de Bourbon, Duc d'Angoulême, then serving as Amiral de France, and the Vicomte du Bouchage, Ministre de la Marine. The design for this side of the medal is signed Puymaurin. The reverse of the medal shows the bust of Louis XVIII, designed by F. Andrieu.

Pompeiana: The Topography, Edifices, and Ornaments of Pompeii.

By Sir William Gell, F.R.S. F.S.A &c. and John P. Gandy, Architect. London, Rodwell and Martin, 1817-19. 8vo. Engr. front,+ xxxi,+ (1),+ 273,+ (3) pp.+ 79 engr. plates, of which one hand coloured, one in red and two double page [i.e. 77 numbered plates on 75 leaves, plus four unnumbered plates]. Foxing. Near contemporary red morocco binding, richly gilt spine with raised bands, richly blind stamped boards with gilt frames, inner gilt bordures and edges gilt (Dawson & Lewis). Book plate with the initials "A. E. H". and owners's signature of A. E. Hope. Garcia 5824. Furchheim p. 37. Vinet 1724. A very fine copy of the first edition of Gell's important work on Pompeii, written together with John Peter Gandy. Here with the extra plate of Vesuvius, not called for in the list of plates, but counted by Garcia and Furchheim. The plates are mostly after drawings by Gell, but three are after Charles Robert Cockerell, who initially planned to write about Pompeii with Gell. The traveller and archaeologist William Gell (1777-1836) started his travelling life with a diplomatic mission to Greece in 1801. In 1807 he was elected a member of the Society of Dilettanti and undertook explorations in Greece and Asia Minor for them. He travelled much in Italy and settled in Naples, were he showed Pompeii to among others Walter Scott. He died in Naples. John Peter Gandy (1771-1832), later John Peter Deering, accompanied Gell on his tours for the Society of Dilletanti. He became a neo-classical architect. This highly popular work, with its exact drawings, introduced the ruins of Pompeii to the English public in the early period of the excavation of the city. More regular excavations had by now begun and the pace of discoveries was so high that Gell was able to fill two more volumes in 1832 with the results of the excavations conducted since 1819

A Narrative of the Briton's Voyage to Pitcairn's Island. By Lieut. J. Shillibeer, R.N

Taunton: printed for the Author by J.W. Marriott, 1817. Octavo, with a frontispiece and 15 illustrations on 11 etched plates, two of which are folding, all by the author; the view of Juan Fernandez printed in ochre; small water-stain in lower corners of a few plates; a very good copy, complete with the initial advertisement leaf, uncut in the original grey boards; spine worn and front cover detached but in excellent unsophisticated condition, in a quarter morocco case. Early visit to Pitcairn. The surprisingly rare first edition; second and third editions which followed shortly afterwards are more often seen, and the obscure provincial imprint of Taunton (in Devon) as well as the fact that the work was privately issued ("Printed for the Author") help to explain its scarcity.Shillibeer's book, as well as being one of the more elusive pieces of Pacificana, manages at the same time to be one of the more delightful. His account of his adventures is full of interest and always idiosyncratic in style, as also are the etched plates, which were his own work and which have an appealing naïveté, as well as a certain home-made charm; the view of Juan Fernandez is printed by him in ochre because it is 'the native colour of the earth of this Island'.The Narrative of the Briton's Voyage is highly important for Pacific history, and particularly for the material that it contains relating to the mutiny on the Bounty. Shillibeer was one of the first to piece together the later history of the mutineers, largely as a result of his meeting and interview with John Adams, the last survivor of the mutiny. The visit to Pitcairn itself is described at length, and the Narrative also describes visits to Chile and Peru, as well as the Galapagos Islands, and the search for the predatory American frigate Essex. The plates include a portrait of Fletcher Christian's son Friday Fletcher October Christian.

Voyages and travels in various parts of the world, during the years 1803, 1804, 1805, 1806, and 1807.

Printed by George Philips, Carlisle 1817 - Two parts in one. 8vo in-4. xvi, [ii], [19]-617, [18] pp. Lacking the frontispiece, but with half-titles to each part present. Later quarter calf and marbled boards with red morocco spine label; interior browning with the occasional stain, marginal loss to upper corners of leaves M3, M4, and Z4, and a light damp stain affecting the last few signatures. First American edition (a reprint of the first English translation published in London, 1813-14). In 1803, Adam Johann Ritter von Krusenstern set out from Kronstadt, Russia on what would become the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe. Langsdorff accompanied the expedition as a naturalist and physician, but parted ways with the crew in 1805 upon reaching Kamchatka - a peninsula in far eastern Russia - continuing on to explore the Aleutian Islands and Alaska. In 1806 he sailed from Sitka to the Spanish presidio at San Francisco. He provides detailed descriptions of the region (the original German edition of 1812 actually included a plate that is the first published view of San Francisco) and of his meeting with commandant José Argüello. The visit resulted in the famed romance between Count Nikolay Rezanov of the Russian-American Company, who had traveled with Langsdorff, and Concepción de Argüello, the Spanish commander’s daughter, immortalized in literature by Bret Harte, Gertrude Atherton, and others throughout the years. In addition to his descriptions of these places, Langsdorff also includes accounts of Brazil, Japan, Hawaii and Alaska. "Langsdorff’s account is rich in descriptions of the peoples and cultures visited, and his descriptions of the Marquesans is particularly important and has become something of a classic" (Hill). The section on the vocabulary of various Ainu tribes is also of great interest.Langsdorff (1774-1852) was a German-Russian naturalist who trained in both medicine and natural history in Germany. Langsdorff was responsible for the eventual founding of Fort Ross by the Russian-American Company in 1812. Langsdorff and Rezanov, successful in obtaining supplies, returned to Sitka and then proceeded to Siberia and then overland to St. Petersburg. Langsdorff was thereafter made consul general of Russia in Rio de Janeiro and later led an expedition on the Amazon with a team of scientists. Though he was unable to complete the journey due to a serious illness, the team managed to collect a vast array of specimens and gather a wealth of information about the various tribes that they encountered. Their findings remain at the Academy of Sciences at St. Petersburg today.
