Hindoo Excavations in the Mountain of Ellora, near Arungabad, in the Decan, in Twenty-Four Views. From the Drawings of James Wales, under the direction of Thomas Daniell.

Printed for Thomas and William Daniell, London 1816 - Oblong folio, pp. [42] + additional engraved title-page, 24 aquatint plates, and 8 engraved plans. Original dark grey-brown paper boards. Plates a little spotted and with marginal dampstains appearing from plate XVII on, only just touching the platemark towards the end, letterpress leaves toned, some soiling throughout. Board edges worn and in one place consolidated with glue, the volume rebacked with matching brown cloth, hinges neatly relined. The second edition of these illustrations of the ancient cliff-side cave temples at Ellora - reduced versions of the much larger, hand-coloured plates which had formed the first edition of 1803. This is sometimes considered the sixth part of a larger project by Thomas and his nephew William Daniell, titled Oriental Scenery, though the other parts all have that general title on their title-pages. This is sometimes called a 'quarto edition', being much smaller than the first (in which the leaves are over 50 x 70 cm), though it is closer in size to a demy folio, with leaves around 36 x 27cm. The illustrations in this volume, again unlike the other volumes of Oriental Scenery, which are entirely the Daniells' work, are based on the work of James Wales, 'a Scottish artist based at Bombay and Poona, who with his assistants Robert Mabon and Gangaram Tambat had been producing and commissioning sketches and plans of the temple at Ellora. After Wales's death in 1795 the Daniells adapted his sketches (then in the possession of Wales's patron Sir Charles Malet) for the sixth volume of Oriental Scenery' (ODNB). Abbey Travel II 432.         Cambria Depicta

1816 - (WALES) [PUGH, Edward]. Cambria Depicta: a Tour through North Wales, Illustrated with Picturesque Views. London: E. Williams, 1816. Folio (9-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches), 20th-century three-quarter red straight-grain morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $6200.First edition of this wonderfully illustrated tour of North Wales, written in "a lively and entertaining style," with 71 fine hand-colored aquatints. This copy richly extra-illustrated with the inclusion of 23 hand-colored aquatints from Compton's Northern Cambrian Mountains of 1820, for a total of 94 hand-colored aquatint plates. A handsomely bound copy."The best of all the books on Wales is the Cambria Depicta of Edward Pugh, the drawings for which took ten years to complete. In the preface the author speaks of the multiplication of illustrations of the same scenes owing to the fact that most travellers, being ignorant of the language of the country, never left the frequented routes, and he claims all his drawings are new to the public" (Prideaux). "By 1793, Edward Pugh (1763-1813), miniature painter and topographer, was exhibiting miniatures at the Royal Academy where he continued to show both portraits and landscapes until 1808. "It was Pugh's association with John Boydell, the publisher of prints, which led him in 1804 to commence his most important work, Cambria Depicta. Over the next nine years Pugh travelled extensively on foot through north Wales, and both wrote the substantial text and provided the original drawings for aquatints. Although the biographical details of Pugh's life are sketchy, a great deal can be said of his character, since Cambria Depicta was written in the first person and in a lively and entertaining style. It presents Wales from the perspective of a native Welsh-speaker, rather than of an English traveler, on which grounds the author particularly commended the work to his audience for the insights it offered. Pugh regaled his readers with interesting incidents, gossip, and his idiosyncratic opinions on aesthetics and the general state of the world. His was a fresh and democratic voice, expressing ambitions for the improvement of contemporary Welsh culture, as well as relating its history and myths. Pugh did not see his masterpiece in printed form; it was published by Evan Williams in London three years later. Examples of his work are in the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, the National Museum and Gallery of Wales, Cardiff, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London" (ODNB). "Breddyn Mountains from Powis Castle Grounds" bound slightly out of order, but present. Abbey, Scenery 521. Prideaux, 348. (See Abbey, Scenery 523 for Compton's Northern Cambrian Mountains.). Only occasional minor spot of foxing. Plates generally quite clean and vivid. Binding fine and handsome. An excellent extra-illustrated copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Alastor; or, the Spirit of Solitude: and Other Poems

vi, [2], 101 pp., one blank leaf. 8vo, orig. grey boards (spine with a small defect), orig. printed paper label on spine, edition binder's embossed stamp on inside front cover "J:Syrett," uncut. London: Printed for Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, et al., 1816. First edition, and a splendid copy in original boards, of Shelley's first major achievement; this copy bears on the free front endpaper the ownership signature - "Tighe" - of what is almost certainly George William Tighe (1776-1837), the common-law husband of Margaret King, Lady Mount Cashell. The Shelleys moved to Pisa at the suggestion of Lady Mount Cashell (at that time living with Tighe as "Mrs. Mason"), a former pupil of Mary Wollstonecraft. Tighe and "Mrs. Mason" had settled in Pisa where she studied medicine with Andrea Vaccá Berlinghieri at the city's university. Tighe was an agriculturalist and provided Shelley with information on chemistry, biology, and statistics. In 1821, Tighe became involved in the attempts of Claire Clairmont, Mary Shelley's step-sister, to remove her daughter by Byron from a convent in Ravenna. Tighe made a secret trip to Ravenna and Bagnacavallo to find out what he could about the convent and Allegra's treatment there. Claire Clairmont wrote in her journal on 21 April 1821 that she had dreamt that G.W. Tighe had fetched Allegra back from Bagnacavallo; years later - sometime between 1869 and her death in 1879 - she told E.J. Trelawny that Tighe had gone to fetch Allegra but as McAleer says, "Tatty's visit may have grown entirely out of the dream Claire had on April 21 - his passport records no such trip."-Mc Aleer, Sensitive Plant, p. 162. Certainly Claire Clairmont later thought of G.W. Tighe as a protector and brave and courteous gentleman. This copy comes from the family library descending from Lady Mount Cashell, which has close Shelley connections. On page 97, line 2, the first word "And" has been crossed out in ink. There is a modern slip of paper laid-in there with a note "Shelley." We believe the person who inserted the note was someone in the position to know. Fine condition. Preserved in a box.

Slim octavo, contemporary full straight-grain red morocco gilt, gilt armorial coat of arms of La Duchesse du Berry on both boards, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, silk endpapers, all edges gilt. $5500.First edition of the popular French play L'Anniversaire, from the library of La Duchesse de Berry, with her gilt armorial coat of arms on both boards. This first edition of the French dramatic comedy, L'Anniversaire, is from the library of Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Sicile, La Duchesse de Berry, daughter of Francis I of the Two Sicilies, and it contains her gilt coat of arms on both boards (Olivier 2554). La Duchesse de Berry is well remembered for staging a brief rebellion against "King Louis-Philippe, in a vain attempt to gain the crown for her son, Henri Dieudonné, comte de Chambord. Her husband, the Duc de Berry, a son of Charles X of France, had been assassinated in 1820. When Charles was overthrown in 1830, she tried to secure the succession for her son but was forced into exile. In 1832, disguised as a peasant, she crossed the French border from Italy and made her way to the Vendée, where she succeeded in instigating a brief but abortive insurrection (June 1832). She was arrested in Nantes". but was freed in July 1833 with the discovery of her recent marriage to an obscure Italian nobleman, Count Ettore Lucchesi-Palli, an act that exempted her from the French throne. She lived in Austria and Italy until her death" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). This one-act play in verse by dramatists de Rancé and Théaulon premiered at Théâtre-Français on November 16, 1816. Text in French. Quérard, 450. With gilt morocco bookplate of bibliophile Pierre Guerquin, a director of Musées Nationaux de France. Bookplate of collector N.A.C. Embiricos.         Tuberose/Polianthahes Tuberosa, Plate 147

Paris: Chez L'auteur De L'imprimerie de Didot Jeune, 1802-1816 - A fine stipple engraving with original hand color and full margins "Tuberose/Polianthahes Tuberosa, Plate 147," from the folio edition of "Les Liliacées" by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759 - 1840) 21 x 14 inches sheet. Fine stipple-engraved plate in colors. L’imprimerie de Didot Jeune. Paris, 1802 - 1816. Annotation with names in French on lower half; legend below identifying P.J. Redouté as painter and Langlois as engraver (tiny tears along right and lower left edge, toning consistent with age). The present stipple engraving comes with full margins, a rare sight in existing Redoute works today. This engraving provides a true-to-life portraiture of the Tuberose, a plant beloved for the intensely rich and sultry fragrance of its flowers. The origin of this night-blooming plant can be traced to a few corners of the world. Most believe it is from Mexico, and arose from its wild form, Polianthes gracilis. Scholar Brian Mathew proposes that this flower may have been introduced by the Spanish into Mexico during their early explorations of the region. Other accounts indicate that the Tuberose may have been imported into Europe from the East, where it had been grown for centuries for its alluring scent (Mathew, 114). The present composition shows a single-form tuberose floating elegantly in space, without background or setting. The regal simplicity of the composition allows the viewer to focus without distraction on the delicate complexity of the plant itself. The gorgeous details of this plant are meticulously rendered. The main life-size illustration is accompanied by Redouté’s small anatomical drawing placed below, which shows the flower’s pistil as well as the flower opened out to show stamens. These small drawings enable the flower to be identified with precision and cultivated to perfection. The unequalled botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté occupies a central position in the development of European flower painting. Dubbed the "Raphael of flowers," he produced over 2,100 published plates depicting more than 1,800 flower species over the course of his career, many of which had never been represented before. Redouté had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, from Marie-Antoinette to Empress Josephine and her successor, Marie Louise. Despite many changes of regime in a turbulent epoch, he managed to work without interruption, a testament to his enduring appeal as an artist. His work represents a uniquely harmonious blend of scientific precision and supremely delicate rendering that has never been surpassed. The eight-volumed "Les Liliacées" is perhaps Redouté’s most celebrated work, which he issued while under the patronage of the Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon. This collection of 486 plates records the plants of the Lily family, and related flowers, that Josephine collected and cultivated in her magnificent gardens at Malmaison. Likely no more than 220 copies were produced (Brian Mathew, 8). The luminosity of stipple engraving, a technique perfected by Redouté, is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. The edges of the leaves and petals were dotted as well so as to achieve softness of form. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complex printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redouté provided. Reference: Brian Mathew, "P.J. Redouté: Lilies and Related Flowers," (London: 1981). Catalogued by Xueli Wang, Columbia University, BA; Courtauld Institute of Art, MA.         Dwarf Iris/Iris Lutescens, Plate 263

Paris: Chez L'auteur De L'imprimerie de Didot Jeune, 1802-1816 - A fine stipple engraving with original hand color and full margins showing full printed surface From the folio edition of "Les Liliacées" by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759 - 1840) 21 x 14 inches sheet. Fine stipple-engraved plate in colors. L’imprimerie de Didot Jeune. Paris, 1802 - 1816. Annotation with names in Latin and French on lower half; legend below identifying Redouté as painter and de Gouy as engraver (tiny tears along right edge, toning consistent with age). The present stipple engraving comes with full margins showing the page number in the upper right corner, a rare sight that is often cut out of existing Redoute works today. This engraving provides a true-to-life portraiture of the Dwarf Iris or Dwarf Bearded Iris, and so named because it resembles a miniature iris. This plant can be easily identified by its graceful alternation between large spreading or pendent fall petals and smaller, standard petals. It flourishes in temperate climates, blooming yellow or violet flowers in the spring and becoming dormant in the summer. It is frequently cultivated by gardeners as an ornamental flower. The Dwarf Iris in the present composition floats elegantly in space, without background or setting. The regal simplicity of the composition allows the viewer to focus without distraction on the beauty and delicate complexity of the plant itself. The dynamic structure of the flower is meticulously rendered, with its finely detailed yellow flowers, "bearded" pendent petals, fresh roots, and erect and lustrous leaves. The main life-size illustration is accompanied by Redouté’s small drawing of the flower’s pistil placed below, which records the flower’s individual anatomical feature and allows for it to be identified with precision and cultivated to perfection.         Flabby Leaved Canna/Canna Flaccida, Plate 107

Paris: Chez L'auteur, De l'imprimerie de Didot Jeune, 1802 - 1816 - "Flabby Leaved Canna/ Canna Flaccida, Plate 107" from the folio edition of "Les Liliacées" by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759 - 1840) 21 x 14 inches sheet, 31 x 24 inches framed. Fine stipple-engraved plate in colors. L’imprimerie de Didot Jeune. Paris, 1802 - 1816. Annotation with names in French on lower half; legend below identifying P.J. Redouté as painter and Phillippeaux as engraver (tiny tears along bottom edge, toning consistent with age). "Les Liliacées" is perhaps Redouté’s most celebrated volume, which he issued while under the patronage of the Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon. This volume records the plants of the Lily family, and related flowers, that Josephine collected and cultivated in her magnificent gardens at Malmaison. The luminosity of stipple engraving, a technique perfected by Redouté, is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complex printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redouté provided. The present stipple engraving provides a true-to-life portraiture of a Flabby Leaved Canna flower or Balisier Flasque. Its other names include Golden Canna and Bandana of the Everglades. This blooming, showy, native aquatic plant originates from the South-eastern and South-central wetlands of America, from Texas to South Carolina. It flourishes at the edges of marshes, ponds, and lakes, and is easily identifiable by its clusters of elegant, silky yellow flowers. This plant was first described by the early American explorer William Bertram, who found these flowers growing along the coast of Georgia. The seeds were carried along the currents of the rivers and became easily rooted along shorelines. They were then introduced to England in 1788 and today can be found in diverse parts of the world, from India and the Philippines to Mexico, Panama, and Brazil. In this composition, the Golden Canna floats gracefully in space, without background or setting. The regal simplicity of the composition allows the viewer to focus without distraction on the beauty and delicate complexity of the plant itself. The various parts of the flower are on full display, including the soft and supple petals, tender stem, and succulent, oblong leaves. The main life-size illustration is accompanied by Redouté’s small drawing placed below, which record the flower’s individual anatomical features. These small drawings enables the flower to be identified with precision and cultivated to perfection. Catalogued by Xueli Wang, Columbia University, BA; Courtauld Institute of Art, MA. Later 19th-century polished tan calf by Tout (ink-stamp to front free endpaper verso), skilfully rebacked with the original spine laid down, raised bands, compartments richly gilt with floral sprays, twin red and green morocco letterpieces, date gilt to foot on similar red label, French fillet border and thistle corpernieces gilt to covers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, broad turn-ins with dotted, single fillet and floral rolls in gilt, marbled endpapers. Extremities minimally rubbed, effaced ownership inscription and a few small spots to title-page, advertisements toned (different paper stock), binder's blanks foxed. An excellent, wide-margined copy, the contents clean and well-preserved in a handsome binding. First edition, with the half-title and advertisements, notably untrimmed in a signed later 19th-century binding. This publication prints for the first time three of Coleridge's very best poems, the gothic Christabel (which was written 1797-1800 but excluded from the 1800 edition of Lyrical Ballads on Wordsworth's advice and left unpublished until here), the lysergic Kubla Khan (accompanied by Coleridge's notorious recount of its composition one night after an opium influenced dream having read a work describing Xanadu, the summer palace of the Mongol ruler and Emperor of China), and The Pains of Sleep (considered a description of opium withdrawal symptoms). The publisher's advertisements evince a good year for literature, with Murray publishing Byron's Siege of Corinth, Walter Scott's Field of Waterloo, Jane Austen's Emma, Leigh Hunt's Rimini, as well as John Malcolm's classic History of Persia.

Jones

      P. J. De Mat,, Brussels 1816 - A very rare French translation of Lancaster's The British System of Education (1810). In French it is apparently preceded only by Système anglais dinstruction (1815) a translation by the duc de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, also rare. Lancaster's 'monitorial system', in which huge groups of 100 pupils were educated in factory-inspired classes was widely adopted in Britain and the United State; with Dickens its most effective detractor via the Coketown schoolrooms of Hard Times. The plates of this Brussels edition reproduce those of the English editions, with plans of the schoolroom workstations and plate illustrating group reading from a board (saving the purchase of books).Born in London in 1778 the Quaker Joseph Lancaster founded several schools there, before introducing the system to North and South America. He died in New York in 1838 afer being run over by a carriage. 8vo (192 × 115 mm), pp. vi, [2], 110, including half-title, plus engraved frontispiece and 5 plates (one folding), verso of half-title signed by the publisher (against counterfeits). Uncut in original blue publisher's boards with printed spine label. Rubbed, foot of spine rather worn, label chipped, but an excellent copy.       1816. 1 p. on bifolium. 8vo. "Lady Noel Byron requests Mr Hailes to send Nos. 1 & 2 of the Library of Entertaining Knowledge & Dr Brown's work on the 'Nervous Disease of the Spine" to Mrs Noel, Bullock's Hotel, Windsor, to be placed to Lady Noel Byron's account." With Byron's poem "Fare thee well!" (in letterpress) pasted to the second leaf; traces of mounting on reverse. - A highly educated and strictly religious woman, Anna Isabella seemed an unlikely match for the amoral and agnostic poet Byron. Indeed, the marriage lasted but a year, as Byron was given to fits of anger and maintained an incestuous relationship with his older half-sister Augusta Leigh. The couple separated in March 1816. Their only child, Augusta Ada Byron (Countess of Lovelace), was a gifted mathematician and is credited with creating the first computer program.
