Flabby Leaved Canna/Canna Flaccida, Plate 107

Paris: Chez L'auteur, De l'imprimerie de Didot Jeune, 1802 - 1816 - "Flabby Leaved Canna/ Canna Flaccida, Plate 107" from the folio edition of "Les Liliacées" by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759 - 1840) 21 x 14 inches sheet, 31 x 24 inches framed. Fine stipple-engraved plate in colors. L’imprimerie de Didot Jeune. Paris, 1802 - 1816. Annotation with names in French on lower half; legend below identifying P.J. Redouté as painter and Phillippeaux as engraver (tiny tears along bottom edge, toning consistent with age). The unequalled botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté occupies a central position in the development of European flower painting. Dubbed the "Raphael of flowers," he produced over 2,100 published plates depicting more than 1,800 flower species over the course of his career, many of which had never been represented before. Redouté had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, from Marie-Antoinette to Empress Josephine and her successor, Marie Louise. Despite many changes of regime in a turbulent epoch, he managed to work without interruption, a testament to his enduring appeal as an artist. His work represents a uniquely harmonious blend of scientific precision and supremely delicate rendering that has never been surpassed. "Les Liliacées" is perhaps Redouté’s most celebrated volume, which he issued while under the patronage of the Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon. This volume records the plants of the Lily family, and related flowers, that Josephine collected and cultivated in her magnificent gardens at Malmaison. The luminosity of stipple engraving, a technique perfected by Redouté, is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. The edges of the leaves and petals were dotted as well so as to achieve softness of form. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complex printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redouté provided. The present stipple engraving provides a true-to-life portraiture of a Flabby Leaved Canna flower or Balisier Flasque. Its other names include Golden Canna and Bandana of the Everglades. This blooming, showy, native aquatic plant originates from the South-eastern and South-central wetlands of America, from Texas to South Carolina. It flourishes at the edges of marshes, ponds, and lakes, and is easily identifiable by its clusters of elegant, silky yellow flowers. This plant was first described by the early American explorer William Bertram, who found these flowers growing along the coast of Georgia. The seeds were carried along the currents of the rivers and became easily rooted along shorelines. They were then introduced to England in 1788 and today can be found in diverse parts of the world, from India and the Philippines to Mexico, Panama, and Brazil. In this composition, the Golden Canna floats gracefully in space, without background or setting. The regal simplicity of the composition allows the viewer to focus without distraction on the beauty and delicate complexity of the plant itself. The various parts of the flower are on full display, including the soft and supple petals, tender stem, and succulent, oblong leaves. The main life-size illustration is accompanied by Redouté’s small drawing placed below, which record the flower’s individual anatomical features. These small drawings enables the flower to be identified with precision and cultivated to perfection. Catalogued by Xueli Wang, Columbia University, BA; Courtauld Institute of Art, MA. You are warmly invited to visit our gallery at 1016 Madison Avenue in New York City to view this work whenever it might be convenient.

Christabel: Kubla Khan, A Vision; The Pains of Sleep.

London: printed for John Murray, by William Bulmer and Co.,, 1816. Octavo (222 × 139 mm). Later 19th-century polished tan calf by Tout (ink-stamp to front free endpaper verso), skilfully rebacked with the original spine laid down, raised bands, compartments richly gilt with floral sprays, twin red and green morocco letterpieces, date gilt to foot on similar red label, French fillet border and thistle corpernieces gilt to covers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, broad turn-ins with dotted, single fillet and floral rolls in gilt, marbled endpapers. Complete with the half-titles and 8 pages of publisher's advertisements dated March 1816 to the rear. Engraved bookplate of collector John Waugh dated 1896 to the front pastedown. Extremities minimally rubbed, effaced ownership inscription and a few small spots to title-page, advertisements toned (different paper stock), binder's blanks foxed. An excellent, wide-margined copy, the contents clean and well-preserved in a handsome binding. First edition, with the half-title and advertisements, notably untrimmed in a signed later 19th-century binding. This publication prints for the first time three of Coleridge's very best poems, the gothic Christabel (which was written 1797-1800 but excluded from the 1800 edition of Lyrical Ballads on Wordsworth's advice and left unpublished until here), the lysergic Kubla Khan (accompanied by Coleridge's notorious recount of its composition one night after an opium influenced dream having read a work describing Xanadu, the summer palace of the Mongol ruler and Emperor of China), and The Pains of Sleep (considered a description of opium withdrawal symptoms). The publisher's advertisements evince a good year for literature, with Murray publishing Byron's Siege of Corinth, Walter Scott's Field of Waterloo, Jane Austen's Emma, Leigh Hunt's Rimini, as well as John Malcolm's classic History of Persia.

Jones

      P. J. De Mat,, Brussels 1816 - A very rare French translation of Lancaster's The British System of Education (1810). In French it is apparently preceded only by Système anglais dinstruction (1815) a translation by the duc de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, also rare. Lancaster's 'monitorial system', in which huge groups of 100 pupils were educated in factory-inspired classes was widely adopted in Britain and the United State; with Dickens its most effective detractor via the Coketown schoolrooms of Hard Times. The plates of this Brussels edition reproduce those of the English editions, with plans of the schoolroom workstations and plate illustrating group reading from a board (saving the purchase of books).Born in London in 1778 the Quaker Joseph Lancaster founded several schools there, before introducing the system to North and South America. He died in New York in 1838 afer being run over by a carriage. 8vo (192 × 115 mm), pp. vi, [2], 110, including half-title, plus engraved frontispiece and 5 plates (one folding), verso of half-title signed by the publisher (against counterfeits). Uncut in original blue publisher's boards with printed spine label. Rubbed, foot of spine rather worn, label chipped, but an excellent copy.         Autograph book order signed. Brighton

1816. 1 p. on bifolium. 8vo. "Lady Noel Byron requests Mr Hailes to send Nos. 1 & 2 of the Library of Entertaining Knowledge & Dr Brown's work on the 'Nervous Disease of the Spine" to Mrs Noel, Bullock's Hotel, Windsor, to be placed to Lady Noel Byron's account." With Byron's poem "Fare thee well!" (in letterpress) pasted to the second leaf; traces of mounting on reverse. - A highly educated and strictly religious woman, Anna Isabella seemed an unlikely match for the amoral and agnostic poet Byron. Indeed, the marriage lasted but a year, as Byron was given to fits of anger and maintained an incestuous relationship with his older half-sister Augusta Leigh. The couple separated in March 1816. Their only child, Augusta Ada Byron (Countess of Lovelace), was a gifted mathematician and is credited with creating the first computer program.

Panorama prise au Sommet du Mont Rigi. Zurich, Keller & Füssli, (1816).

1816. 8vo. Fan-folded, hand-coloured aquatint (with 9 folding double leaves, c. 195 x 1980 mm) in contemp. blindstamped blue boards with floral design and mounted border. In slipcase with mounted title. The finest and rarest of Keller's panoramas in contemporary colour, depicting the view from Mount Rigi from Risch on Lake Zug to Kuessnacht on Lake Lucerne. Not to be confused with Keller's much more common like-titled panoramas of merely half size, published from 1820 onwards (cf. Harteveld Cat. 206, no. 123: their copy described as "splendidly coloured copy, then sold for the fourfold price of copies in simple colour"). In 1823 Keller was to publish yet another large-format panorama as part of a book with the same title, again not identical with this present view. - The title label bears the publisher note as quoted above; the view itself is captioned: "Gezeichnet auf dem Rigi-Kulm, 1814, von H. Keller, Vermehrt u. Berichtigt 1816 / gestochen von J. J. Scheurmann 1815". Two flaps (measuring 70 x 160 mm) can be folded out at the bottom, through with the view includes Arth on Lake Zug. Similarly, Mount Rossberg is also inserted as a flap, behind which the viewer may uncover Lake Aegeri and Eccehomo. Mounted on the back pastedown is a coloured engraving: "Le Mont Righi, dessiné près de Zoug" (175 x 107 mm; B. Bullinger del., F. Hegi sc.). - Minute paper defect on the horizon at far left, otherwise in perfect condition. Binding with occasional insignificant staining; altogether very clean. Insignificant bumping to edges of slipcase. Ms. ownership note by the Austrian actor Joseph Koberwein (1774-1857). The son of the important travelling actor Simon Friedrich Koberwein made his debut in 1796 at the Vienna Court Theatre and remained as a member of the ensemble until 1846. His principal roles were Ferdinand, Leicester, and Wallenstein. - Very rare; library and collection catalogues (OCLC, British Library, etc.) list only the later editions. Cf. Lonchamp 1672 (note). Barth 193787ff. (book edition only).

Bound in contemporary blue boards, new spine and corner tips, edges completely untrimmed, first and last leaf dust-soiled. Little known library sale catalogue of a well-known Leiden professor of anatomy who made very significant contributions to Dutch paleopathology. Sandifort (1742-1814) was trained by world-famous Bernard Seigfried Albinus, and became devoted to applied and clinical anatomy. From 1777 to 1781 he published "Observationes anatomico-pathologicae," later followed by the famous series of atlases on the contents of the Leiden Anatomical Museum ("Museum Anatomicum Lugdunuo-Batavae," 1793-1835) which was subsequently completed by his son equally famous son Gerard. "This monumental work is still valued today for its beautiful engravings and descriptions of a great variety of paleopathological conditions" (SOURCE: Global History of Paleopathology: Pioneers and Prospects, ed. Jane E. Buikstra). * Sandifort was fluent in Dutch, German, Swedish, and Italian, and his private library reflects his erudition in an unusually broad range of subjects in the aforementioned languages. The sale catalogue is arranged as follows: Theology, Botony, Law, Politics and Government, Philosophy, Mathematics, History, Geography, Literature, Archeology, Biography, Classics, and Voyages & Travels (the latter being particularly well represented). Notably absent are medical books which were presumably bequeathed to his son Gerard, who contributed a 2-page preface to the catalogue (his library sold in 1849). * PROVENANCE: contemporary inscription on title "Heer Trap" -- blind stamp of the now-defunct Theological Institute of Connecticut on 1st and 2nd leaf -- Hartford Theological Seminary (the collection of 240,000 volumes was purchased by Emory University in 1975) -- deaccessioned from Pitts Theology Library (bookplate). * Scarce: OCLC locates three copies worldwide, all in The Netherlands (Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Leiden University, and Maastricht University), to which we add Bibliotheque Royale Albert I copy, described by Blogie, Col. 50.

AN APPEAL TO THE PEOPLE OF MAINE ON THE QUESTION OF SEPARATION. "SHALL THE LEGISLATURE BE REQUESTED TO GIVE ITS CONSENT TO THE SEPARATION OF THE DISTRICT OF MAINE FROM MASSACHUSETTS PROPER AND TO THE ERECTION OF SAID DISTRICT INTO A SEPARATE STATE." MASS. RESOLVES.

Printed (By Request), April 1816, [Portland? Brunswick?]: - 21, [1 blank] pp. Disbound, lightly spotted, Good+. The author argues "that we must sooner or later be separated from Massachusetts. In extent of territory the District of Maine is larger, than the rest of New- England. Her extensive seacoast is indented with harbors, some of which are allowed to be among the finest in the world. In fine, she wants nothing but the fostering care of a legislature, devoted to her prosperity, and ready to aid the enterprize of men of public spirit and capital, to make her the most wealthy and powerful of the Northern States. And such is the high destiny, that awaits her." Massachusetts "views with a degree of jealousy our prosperity." The author makes the case for separation, demonstrating with careful arithmetic the cost savings, as well as the democratic right of Maine residents to choose their own government. FIRST EDITION.         THE NARRATIVE OF A MISSION TO NOVA SCOTIA, NEW BRUNSWICK, AND THE SOMERS ISLANDS; WITH A TOUR TO LAKE ONTARIO. TO WHICH IS ADDED, THE MISSION, AN ORIGINAL POEM, WITH COPIOUS NOTES. ALSO, A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF MISSIONARY SOCIETIES, AND MUCH INTERESTING INFORMATION ON MISSIONS IN GENERAL

Plymouth-Dock, 1816. xiv,289,[1]pp., plus frontispiece portrait and two folding tables. Contemporary diced russia, spine gilt with leather label. Hinges lightly rubbed. Bookplate on front pastedown. Internally clean. Near fine. An important and relatively scarce account of missionary work among the natives of Canada and the slaves of Bermuda by missionary-poet Joshua Marsden. Marsden was remarkable in both his vocation and his avocation: he was a conscientious missionary worker, sympathetic to the plight of those he worked with in Canada and Bermuda, and he produced some interesting poetry. The anthology, AMAZING GRACE: AN ANTHOLOGY OF POEMS ABOUT SLAVERY (Yale, 2002), devotes eleven pages to his poems. Marsden went to Nova Scotia in 1800 and worked among the Micmac and Huron Indians for eight years, until he was sent to Bermuda, where he lived with a black family and frequented their meetings. The present-day Marsden Methodist Church in Smith's Parish is testament to the lasting goodwill and influence that he had in Bermuda. The text describes his work in Canada and Bermuda in detail, including his observations on the habits and customs of the natives, as well as his travels. While in New York in 1812, Marsden was temporarily detained at the outset of the War of 1812, and spent the next two years touring the American northeast and the area around Lake Ontario, including an account of American preparations to invade Canada in 1814. Following his narrative Marsden includes a thirty-four-page poem called "The Mission," and there are other poems in the text, including "A Farewell to Nova Scotia" and "A Descriptive Epistle from Bermuda."         On the Relation between the Specific Gravities of Bodies in their Gaseous State and the Weights of their Atoms" in Annals of Philosophy; or, Magazine of Chemistry, Mineralogy, Mechanics, Natural History, Agriculture and the Arts 6, July-December 1815, pp. 321-330 WITH "Correction of a Mistake in the Essay on the Relation between the Specific Gravities of Bodies in their Gaseous State and the Weights of their Atoms" in Annals of Philosophy; or, Magazine of Chemistry, Mineralogy, Mechanics, Natural History, Agriculture and the Arts 7, 1816, pp. 111-113, 1816

      C. Baldwin, London - TWO VOLUME FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST MODERN ATTEMPT TO CONSTRUCT A THEORY OF ATOMIC STRUCTURE. In the first of the two papers, "the English chemist William Prout observed that the atomic weights of the elements known at that time appeared to be whole multiples of the atomic weight of hydrogen, which has been since called the "whole number rule." This was the first rudimentary theory of the internal structure of an atom" (Wenner Collection). In the second paper, published the following year, Prout went further and proposed that the atoms of all other elements were composed of hydrogen atoms. These two assertions, the whole number rule and hydrogen as the universal atomic building block, became known as "Prout's hypothesis." Prout's whole number rule was finally proven correct more than a century later in 1919 by British physicist William Aston. In 1789, Antoine Lavoisier produced the first modern list of chemical elements, containing also the 23 elements then known. Lavoisier died in 1794 and in the years following his death, another 32 were added. "In 1815 Prout, using Avogadro's method of comparing the relative densities and weights of gases, proposed that all atoms appeared to have weights that were exact multiples of the weight of the lightest atom, hydrogen, and that the different atomic weights of elements are whole-number multiples of the atomic weight of hydrogen (Prout's hypothesis). "He took this as proof that all atoms were actually made from hydrogen atoms and the idea was adopted as atomic theory and used for later investigations of atomic weights and the classification of the elements. If all atoms are made from atoms of hydrogen, then it could be possible to transform an atom of one element into an atom of another. If atoms had been assembled from other things, then they could not themselves be the smallest things in creation" (Neilsen, Atomic Weight, A History of Science). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: C. Baldwin. 4to. Volume VI: [vii], 479 pages, [1], 4. 6 plates. Volume VII: [viii], 488 pages, [4]. 10 plates.
