An account of the kingdom of Caubul, and its dependencies in Persia, Tartary, and India; comprising a view of the Afghaun nation, and a history of the Dooraunee monarchy.

London Longman 1815 - First edition. 4to., xxvii, 675pp., 2 maps (1 large folding), 13 hand-coloured aquatint costume plates and 1 uncoloured aquatint view, occasional light foxing and offsetting, contemporary half calf, rebacked, marbled sides and edges, an excellent copy. Scarce work with fine colour plates. As the global struggle between Britain and Napoleonic France came to a climax, the Indian authorities under the governor-general, Lord Minto, became increasingly concerned that a hostile alliance of Persia, Afghanistan, and the newly powerful Punjab, under the Sikh ruler Ranjit Singh, might coalesce on the northern frontiers of British India. A French embassy was already in the Persian capital, and so in 1808 Elphinstone (1779–1859), an administrator who had originally gone to India to take up an appointment with the East India Company, was sent to treat with Afghan ruler Shah Shuja, and Charles Metcalfe was dispatched to make a defensive alliance with Ranjit Singh. Elphinstone's mission to Kabul was formally a failure. Suspicious of the British, the Afghan court refused to allow the embassy to proceed beyond the border town of Peshawar. The present work, however, continued to inform British policy on the north-western frontier until the 1840s. (ODNB). Abbey Travel 504; Colas 960; Lipperheide 1483.1 [Attributes: First Edition]

The Works [together with] Don Juan.

London: John Murray; John Hunt,, 1815-24. 14 volumes in seven, octavo (164 x 100 mm). Mid-19th-century green morocco, spines in compartments with gilt titles, marbled sides, endpapers and edges. Bound without the half-titles or advertisements leaves. Spines sunned, extremities lightly rubbed, ink mark to headcap of vol. iii, all sound and internally very fresh, generally excellent condition. First collected edition of Byron's works, complete as published sequentially by John Murray 1815-1820, bound as a handsome near-contemporary library set with the complete first edition sequence of Don Juan in the foolscap octavo issue, published by John Hunt from 1821 to 1824, the year of Byron's death. The first four volumes of Murray's collected edition were printed together in 1815 with "In Four Volumes" to their title pages in 1815, the fifth volume in 1817 with the title page amended "In Five Volumes", the sixth in 1818, the seventh in 1819, and the eighth in 1820 completing Childe Harold. In this set these first eight volumes have been reordered and renumbered by hand in order to reunite the four cantos of Childe Harold. The collected works contain, in order of publication: Childe Harold's Pilgrimage: Cantos 1 and 2; The Giaour, The Bride of Abydos; The Corsair, Lara; Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte, Poems (including "Lines inscribed upon a cup formed from a skull"), Hebrew Melodies (including "She walks in beauty" and "The destruction of Semnacherib"); The Siege of Corinth, Parisina, Poems (including "Stanzas for Music"); The Prisoner of Chillon, Manfred, The Lament of Tasso; and Childe Harold's pilgrimage: Cantos 3 and 4; Beppo, and Mazeppa. The final six volumes constitute the complete first edition of Byron's magnum opus Don Juan, cantos I to XXVI, in the foolscap octavo issue. The first volume, cantos I and II, had been originally printed in quarto format. The whole set thus presents an uncommon opportunity to obtain Byron's major lifetime works together in early uniform bindings and in satisfying editions.

        James Madison

1815;1817;1822. A bound set of four Manuscript Documents Signed and accomplished by a secretary, one page each, 8.25" x 13.5", Washington, [no date], with faint embossed seals at bottom left over seal drawings. Each document is a period clerical copy of a presidential appointment of various dates. Folds, some rough margins. <br /><br />The set includes two appointments of Texas revolutionary John T. Mason (1787- 1850) as United States Marshal for Kentucky by James Monroe, December 16, 1817 and January 9,1822; as well as Monroe's appointment of William H. Crawford (1772 - 1834) as Secretary of the Treasury, March 5,1817. The set also includes James Madison's appointment of Joseph Anderson (1757 - 1837) as Comptroller of the Treasury February 28,1815. Bound together at left with a yellow ribbon. Usual folds, some marginal wear including minor tears and chips.<br /><br />Only docketed <I>"A"</I> on the verso, the intended purpose of the documents are at present a mystery. The docket would suggest that perhaps these papers were prepared for a trial. The only commonalities in these undated copies are that James Monroe signed each document (three as President and one as Secretary of State) and all three appointees were prominent southern Democratic-Republicans. Of the three appointees named in the documents, John T. Mason is perhaps the most colorful being not only a Marshall in Kentucky, he served as Secretary of the Michigan Territory and in 1830 became a Texas land speculator and important figure in the Texas Revolution. William H. Crawford not only served Secretary of the Treasury but also as Madison's Secretary of War and Ambassador to France. Before Madison appointed Joseph I. Anderson Comptroller of the Treasury, the Tennessean had served in the Senate from 1797 to 1815. Anderson remained in office at the Treasury until 1836. <br /><br />An unusual collection certainly worthy of further research. <br />

Habitans de la ville de Lyon.

      - [Paris].

In 1787, Limestone was incorporated as Maysville in honor of John May who owned most of the land, but the town was still called Limestone by many into the early years of the 19th century. In 1787, Boone was elected to a seat in the Virginia state assembly. He became a land speculator, buying and selling thousands of acres of frontier land in Kentucky. This led to financial difficulties because, according to John Mack Faragher in “Daniel Boone: The Life and Legend of an American Pioneer,” Daniel Boone “lacked the ruthless instincts that speculation demanded ... for him business obligations were personal matters, and doing the right thing frequently meant taking a financial loss...” By the summer of 1789, Boone had left Maysville for Point Pleasant, farther up on the Ohio River. Faragher notes, “There is little ... to suggest that Boone left Limestone in utter despair and none to suggest such impoverishment. His deepening failure in real estate, which must have been painfully obvious to him, was not yet publically evident ... By no means did he abandon his pursuit of profit, but continued for several more years to work as a small merchant, militia sutler, and shipper.” In 1798, Mason County issued a warrant for Daniel Boone’s arrest for debt.

Elements of Faith, for the use of Jewish youth, of both sexes. (Shorshei Emunah).

London E. Justins printer 1815 - First edition. 4to, (21 x 14 cm). [1-3,] 4-10, [1], 6-1 pp, [1], 2, [3] 4-56 ll. Restored marbled boards, with calf spine and gilt ornaments. Text in English and Hebrew. A fine copy. Educational handbook which aimed at protecting Jewish children from the inroads of Christian missionaries. First published in London in 1815, the book was then translated to Dutch and published in Amsterdam in 1816; Second English edition was published in 1817. The Introduction states that the book was undertaken at the behest of the Rabbi of the Aschkenazic community of London, Solomon Hirschell, together with Raphael di Meldola, Rabbi of the Sephardic community. The book had its critics among the London Jewry - in 1818 Salomon Bennett, a professional engraver and author, published a work titled 'The Present Reign of the Synagogue of Duke's Place Displayed in a Series of Critical, Theological and Rabbinical Discussions on a Hebrew Pamphlet entitled Minchath Kenauth' in which he attacks the Chief Rabbi Solomon Hirschell and the offered book, which was published under Hirschell's patronage and which Bennett regarded as being heretical. Shalom ben Jacob Cohen (1772&#150;1845) was a Hebrew writer, poet and scholar. Born in Mezhirech, Poland, he studied German and read the new Hebrew literature. His first book, Mishlei Agur (1799), was a collection of Hebrew fables in rhyme, with German translation, aimed at teaching Jewish children simple and clear Hebrew. Cohen went to Berlin in 1789 and served as a teacher as well as the editor of Ha-Me'assef (in the years 1809&#150;11), a periodical which aimed to spread the use of the Hebrew language among educated Jewish youth. In 1813 Cohen left Germany, spent a short period in Amsterdam, and moved to London where he tried unsuccessfully to establish a Jewish school, publishing the offered title along the way. He then moved to Hamburg circa 1816-1817. In 1820 Cohen was invited by Anton Schmid to serve as head proofreader in the Hebrew section of his printing press in Vienna, where he remained for 16 years. In 1821 Cohen established the annual Bikkurei ha-Ittim, three issues of which appeared under his editorship. In 1834 he published his poetic work, Nir David, a description of the life of King David, which considered one of the first romantic works in Hebrew literature. In 1836 Cohen returned to Hamburg, where he remained until his death. His last extensive work was Kore ha-Dorot, a history of the Jewish people (1838). His other works include: Matta'ei Kedem al Admat Zafon (1807), poetry; Amal ve-Tirzah (1812), an allegorical and utopian drama, a sequel to M.H. Luzzatto's La-Yesharim Tehillah; and Ketav Yosher (1820), a literary miscellany. Singerman 0364, does not appear in Goldman. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Case of a foetus found in the abdomen of a young man, at Sherborne, in Dorsetshire / by Nathaniel Highmore, Surgeon, and member of the Royal College of Surgeons in London

London: Published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, Paternoster-Row. And sold by Anderton, West-Smithfield; Callow, Crown-Court, Soho; Cox, St. Thomas-Street, Borough; Highley, and Underwood, Fleet-Street, 1815. FIRST EDITION. Very good. 4to. 30, [2] pp., with 2 folded leaves of engraved plates depicting the monstrous growth (signed C. Heath, Sculp.). The long list of Subscribers consists of four pages (pp. 5-9). With the uncommon Errata leaf at end. Bound by Hering, almost certainly Charles Hering owing to the quality of the tooling and exceptional leather using in the binding. On both covers the gilt arms of Charles Stanhope, 4th Earl of Harrington, with motto "A Deo et rege." Binding rubbed along extremities (significantly so on top edge of lower cover, oddly blackened; the spine appears to have had some repair). At one time another work, subsequently excised, was contained in this volume: several stubs can be seen following the printed text, and indeed there is some faint offsetting (of a drawing?) on the final blank leaf. Four broad bands on spine, the second compartment lettered direct, others bearing a gilt impression on an Owl which is not known to have been associated with the Stanhope family. Perhaps this represents the Owl of Athena? The first and foremost description of this celebrated medical curiosity; the case of one Thomas Lane (16 years of age), whose death was apparently caused as a result of a half-formed foetus growing in his intenstines. The boy's stomach expanded enormously and, according to the present text, "exclaimed, affrightened, 'Mother! Do come to me, I have something ALIVE in my body!'" (p. 14). The author's first assumption was that Thomas Lane was no boy, but actually a girl (see Lisa Forman Cody, Birthing the Nation: Sex, Science, and the Conception of Eighteenth-Century Britons, Oxford University Press, 2005, pp. 299-300). The monstrous fetus in question is in the museum of the College of Surgeons in London. It would appear that the cyst itself was contained in a turbid whitish-coloured fluid, with balls of hair mixed with fat, in which was calcareous matter. Attached to the cyst was a mass of bone, teeth, &c. On one sige projected a small appendage resembling the hand, and below this was a long appendage like an abortive arms (or foot?) -- see Thomas Hawkes Tanner, On the Signs and Diseases of Pregnancy (1867), p. 171, note. The author, Nathaniel Highmore, a member of Jesus College, Cambridge, received his classical education at Gottingen, under Michaelis and Heyne, and studied medicine at London, Edinburgh, and Leyden. In 1789 he was ordained a deacon, but he never went into priest's orders; and, at length, resolving to become an advocate in the ecclesiastical court, he took the degree of doctor of civil law at Cambridge in 1796. It is unclear to us why Highmore would have had an interest in monstrous fetuses, as here. Equally unclear are the reasons for which the first owner of this volume had it bound by Hering, one of the foremost bookbinders in London during the Regency. PROVENANCE: Charles Stanhope, 4th Earl of Harrington (1780-1851), eldest son of Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Harrington, and Jane, daughter and coheir of Sir John Fleming, Baronet, of Brampton Park in Middlesex, was known as Viscount Petersham until he succeeded his father as 4th Earl of Harrington in 1829. A Major General in the Army and a Lord of the Bedchamber, he was a leader of fashion during the Regency and a well known eccentric. He never went out until six o' clock in the evening, his equipage was all of a certain colour of brown, he invented the Petersham overcoat and Petersham blend of snuff, made his own blacking, and had an outstanding collection of snuff boxes. He married Maria Foote, the actress, 7 April 1831. They had an only surviving daughter, and at his death the title passed to his brother, Leicester Fitzgerald Charles Stanhope. (SOURCE: British Armorial Bindings online database). Scarce in commerce: only other copy is currently available, and not only is it in a modern binding, but it is lacking one of the two plates (sic).

Handbuch der menschlichen Anatomie. 4 Bde. (all publ.).

Halle und Berlin, in der Buchhandlung des Hallischen Waisenhauses, 1815-1820, 8, X, 664 XVIII, 621 XVI, 800 XVIII, 820 pp., 4 Halbledereinbände der Zeit Rücken erneuert feines Exemplar. First Edition!"This four-volume unillustrated treatise on human anatomy is a fine example of the accuracy and scholarship which characterize all of Meckel's work."Johann Friedrich Meckel der Jüngere, "den man auch oft als den deutschen Cuvier bezeichnet hat, ist der Sohn von Philipp Friedrich Theodor M., geb. zu Halle am 17. October 1781 - 31. Nikolaus Rüdinger, ADB XXi (1885), pp. 159-162.Garrison & Morton No.407 Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1368
