[2], 281?385, 15 pp., fold. plts. numbered xxxix ?lxviii.. 1813] At the base of the title-page of this infantry manual is printed "Reimpreso por disposicion del . . => That is, Lt. Gen. Charles William Doyle (1770?1842) ordered this work to be printed. Doyle was an Irish-born British lieutenant-colonel who in 1808 was ordered to Portugal to help fight Napoleon in the Peninsular Campaign. He very successfully aided the Spanish army in instilling discipline and organizing light infantry and was made a lieutenant general in the Spanish army. In 1811 Britain ordered him home, but when he reached Cadiz, Sir Henry Wellesley convinced him to command a camp at which a new army was being organized for action in the south of Spain. Again he was highly successful in his military instruction of new troops, and as a result was promoted to full colonel in the British army; he remained in Spain till the end of the war in 1814. The present work, extracted from the larger one of the same title printed at Madrid by the Imprenta Real in 1808, was clearly printed for the instruction of Doyle's southern army. At the rear of the volume are => 30 folding plates setting forth various dispositions and movements of infantry troops; clear, careful, verbal explanations of these precede them. Searches of NUC, WorldCat, and the CCPBE locate => only three copies worldwide (all in Spain). Provenance: Contemporary signature of "Velez" on title-page. Dark brown speckled calf, black gilt-lettered title-label (a little chipped) to gilt-ruled spine, marbled endpapers; binding lightly rubbed. Age-toning and general light soiling, occasionally a dog-ear or a spot, all plates clean, well-attached, and whole at folds. => A very sound, very good copy.

        Pianta di Verona.

Revelation xxii. 16, 17, ?I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. ? Here is the call to the Jews, to answer, how they will expect the branch, without the root, whom they cut off, and set at nought? 1814; ?The fourth book of wonders: being the answer of the Lord to the Hebrews?, 1814; ?The fifth book of wonders: announcing the event having taken place, which was promised in the fourth book should be in May: with a further explanation of the four former books ; also an answer to the address of the Rev. James Hearn, Curate of Brixham, Devon; and to the mockery of others?, 1814; and four pamphlets: ?Copies of letters sent to the clergy of Exeter, from 1796 to 1800, with communications and prophecies put in the newspapers in 1813?; ?Wisdom excelleth the weapons of war: and herein is shewn that judgments are the strange works of the Lord, but mercy His darling attribute?, 1814; ?A communication sent in a letter to the Reverend Mr. P. In 1797, with an explanation thereon now given?, 1814; ?Prophecies announcing the birth of the Prince of Peace?, 1814. All publications ?Printed by W. Marchant, Ingram Court?, and end on this note "The above taken from Joanna Southcott's mouth, by me, Ann Underwood. " Nine publications by Joanna Southcott (1750-1814) , prophet and writer, who started the Southcottian movement with her phrophecies, gaining many adherents from Richard Brothers after his arrest: ?One of the most significant of her London converts was Jane Townley, who not only invited Southcott, in April 1804, to become part of her household, but also did all she could to promote Southcott's writings and cause, including providing her maidservant, Ann Underwood, to act as Southcott's accomplished and devoted amanuensis. With the steadfast assistance of Foley, Sharp, and others, the three women became the nerve centre for the Southcottian movement, which generated an astonishing degree of interest, correspondence, and debate regarding Southcott's prophetic claims. Between 1801 and 1814, Southcott published some sixty-five pamphlets, totalling almost 5000 pages; moreover, her unpublished manuscripts amount to twice the number of pages in print. By one conservative estimate, a total of 108, 000 copies of her various works were published and circulated from 1801 to 1816, making her one of the most popular writers of her time (Hopkins, 84) . One reason for the immediate appeal of her texts is their unique mix of apocalyptic optimism with down-to-earth narratives about everyday life, which she converts to spiritual account. ? In 1814 Southcott carried the claim to a new level when she announced that she was about to become the mother of Shiloh, the name given to the expected divine incarnation. The revelation was made explicit in The Third Book of Wonders, Announcing the Coming of Shiloh (1814) , and Prophecies Announcing the Birth of the Prince of Peace (1814) , which collected extractions from earlier writings that seemed to anticipate this new revelation. ? After Southcott's death the movement splintered and prophets of Shiloh proliferated, among which John Ward's Shilohites and John Wroe's Christian Israelites were the most prominent. A core of her inner circle kept the faith quietly, remaining loyal to Southcott's work, as signified by their protection of the ?great box?, which contained the sealed prophecies that were to be opened some time in the unspecified future by the bishops. ? (Oxford National Biography, 2004) . Bound in half calf with marbled boards, with gilt title on spine. Subjects: Prophecies. Southcott Movement ? Prior to 1815. OCLC lists less than 23 copies per each of these publications included in this bound collection. Light wear to leather. Light foxing and light soiling to a few pages throughout, overall, fresh and clean. Very good + condition. (KH-1-46)

Gustavus Vasa, and Other Poems. Second edition. London, Longman, Hurst. Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1813. 8:o. xxvii,+ (blank),+ 230,+ (34) s. The Swede I sing, by Heaven ordain'd to save/ His country's glories from a Danish grave,/ Restore her laws, her Papal rites efface,/ And fix her freedom on a lasting base."

Select Poems of Margaret Cavendish Duchess of Newcastle

Lee Priory , UK: Lee Priory Press, 1813. First edtion. Published at the Press of Lee Priory. Most Lee Priory publications were all limited editions, with most editions having a press run of less than 100 copies. This book was published in a press run of 25 copies. I could find only 2 copies worldwide - one in the British Museum and one in the Library of Scotland. This is an ex library book and has the usual library notations , stamps and a card pouch. There is a small tear at the top of the spine and a tear along the middle of the spine. This would be a nice book to have professionally rebound. With the exception of the listed defects the book is in good to very good condition. The actual book pages are bright , notation and defect free (with the exceptions listed) There is a decorative image on one of the front end sheets which shows light foxing and there is light foxing after this image. This book has the bookplate of Belgian politician Sylvain Van De Weyer inside the front cover. This is a very collectible book. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

London und Paris (Complete in 24 Vols ) + Paris, Wien und London and Paris und Wien (Complete in 5 Vols )

Weimar, Germany: Halle und Rudolstadt, 1813. Hardcover. Very Good. James Gillray et al.. A very scarce example of this complete set, an exhaustive study of late 18th/early 19th century London, Paris --and, finally, Vienna. Published in Weimar, Germany, the text thruout is supplemented by an astounding array of fold-out plates (most of which were created and hand-colored by the leading caricaturists and illustrators of the day, such as Britain's James Gillray). The first 24 volumes (comprising all of "London und Paris", 1798-1810) consist of 268 copper plates (228 of which are fold-outs) and of those, 143 are hand-colored. In the remaining 5 volumes ("Paris, Wien und London" and "Paris und Wien", 1811-1813), there are 42 copper plates (25 of which are fold-outs) and of these, 10 are hand-colored. The set appears in its original bindings (unprinted gray boards) and every volume has its original decorative title-label at the spine. In each case, the spine labels have held up nicely and boast bright gilt-lettering. There is some minor water-staining to a number of the volumes. A little more than half of the 29 volumes show anywhere from minute (in most cases) to moderate staining along the spines. Very few of the front or rear covers are affected (only 3 of the volumes show staining here) and only several of the volumes have noticeable staining to the text (with only a very small handful of plates affected at all). Even with the staining, the set merits a solid VG (with no writing or markings to speak of, beyond light, forgiveable foxing) and remains very impressive and imposing. Uniform 12 mos, one of the great records of social and cultural machinations at the dawn of 19th century London, Paris and Vienna. (Kirchner 1770, Die Schwester 1279a, Hayn-Gotendorf IV, 246). This set is included in the permanent collections at the Library of the British Museum and the Austrian National Library.

Havana, 1813. [1]p. plus integral blank. Folio. Old fold lines. Moderately chipped and worn at edges. Evenly tonned. Contemporary manuscript notations. Good. A rare Havana imprint. As Spanish power in the New World was waning, its grip on Cuba was threatened by domestic and foreign intruders. This decree, issued by Fernando VII on June 17, 1813 and printed on September 20, orders the annulment of all criminal cases. This amnesty policy, extended to other areas of New Spain as well, sought to placate opposition forces. It calls on all levels of government to announce and enforce the decree. It is endorsed in manuscript.

[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM JOHN TRUMBULL TO LORD SIDMOUTH, ACCOMPANIED BY TRUMBULL'S NOTES ON THEIR RESULTING CONVERSATION ON THE WAR OF 1812]

[London], 1813. [3]pp. Both sheets held together with period wax and a seal tamp. Quarto. Very faint old fold lines. Fine. Letter sent by Trumbull to Sidmouth requesting "the honour of a few minutes conversation at any hour which his Lordship shall please to name." The second sheet bears Sidmouth's cordial response, naming the time and place. It does not appear that Trumbull was acting in a kind of official capacity but was, perhaps, merely paying an informal social visit on an influential friend. On the verso of Sidmouth's response, Trumbull has made notes on their conversation. His notes read, in part: "Conversation turned on the destruction of small towns on the Chesapeake. I expressed my high satisfaction that the officers & troops in Canada, instead of retaliating the threats held out in Gen'l Hull's proclamation, of giving no quarters & the conduct of the commanding officer of Fort Niagara, in firing hot balls upon the Village of Newark - had conducted the war with humanity & restrained the savages in a great degree from their usual habits of indiscriminate destruction & burning....His [Lordship] made many professions of gen'l good will to the U.S. - regretted the war which had been forced upon [Great Britain] by the unreasonable pretensions of the [American Government], etc." Trumbull served as John Jay's secretary during the peace negotiations with Britain that followed the American Revolution. Sidmouth had served as a Speaker in the House of Commons during Trumbull's time as Jay's secretary, and the two may have become friendly at that time. Likewise, Trumbull spent significant time in London for his painting career. When Trumbull called on Sidmouth in 1813, Sidmouth was in the beginning of his lengthy term as Britain's Home Secretary. An interesting piece for those interested in both Trumbull and the War of 1812.

[2], 281–385, 15 pp., fold. plts. numbered xxxix –lxviii.. 1813] At the base of the title-page of this infantry manual is printed "Reimpreso por disposicion del . . => That is, Lt. Gen. Charles William Doyle (1770–1842) ordered this work to be printed.

Versand D: 5,00 EUR
