        XII ????????, ???? ???????????? ? ????? ????????? ??????? ???? ?????? ?????????. [The Tale of Igor's Campaign].

      I. Baikov Skt. Peterburg 1813 - Octavo (19.5 x 11.8 cm). Title, 37 pp. Modern red sheep, date in gilt to upper cover, original wrappers bound in. Very rare and early poetic interpretation of this great piece of Ancient Rus literature; an excellent copy with original wrappers preserved. The manuscript text of the Tale of Igor's Campaign was first discovered in the library of a Yaroslavl monastery by Alexey Musin-Pushkin in 1795. This historical manuscript, with claims suggesting it dated to the 12th century, created a stir in Russian literary circles, as the tale represented the earliest Slavonic language writing, without any element of Church Slavonic. Musin-Pushkin made a transcription of the manuscript for the empress Catherine the Great in 1795 or '96 and published the text in 1800 with the help of Alexey Malinovskiy and Nikolai Bantysh-Kamenskiy. The original manuscript is thought to have burned in the great Moscow fire of 1812 during the Napoleonic occupation, together with Musin-Pushkin's entire library. Absence of the original source of the text created many disputes around its authenticity and accuracy of the Musin-Pushkin's printed version. The first attempt to interpret the Tale into the modern Russian language using verse was made in 1803, but it was this Levitskiy's version that was later chosen by N. Blanchard to serve the basis for the first French translation of the epic (Moscow, 1823). Alexander Pushkin also held a copy of this 1813 edition in his library. Very rare: we could locate only one copy at public holdings outside Russia - at the National library of Slovenia. Sopikov 8723; Modzalevskiy, Biblioteka A.S. Pushkina 210; not in SK XIX.         Autograph Letter

      - Autograph letter from the French harpist and composer to the members of the Comité du Théâtre Feydeau, asking for access to the theater in order to be able to complete his own opera. August 12, 1813. Translated from the French, in part: "Mr. Sewrin has asked me to compose the music for a poem in three acts which you received some time ago. I am working on it with great zeal, but to succeed [.] I feel that I need to study the great masters who have illustrated the scene, so I ask for the the favor to have access [to the theater] from now on, although rehearsals for my opera will not begin for several weeks." He signs, "M. Ch. Bochsa, premier Harpiste de la musique de S. m." The opera mentioned is Bochsa's first work for the Opéra-Comique, L'héritier de Paimpol, with text by the playwright Sewrin, which premiered at the Théâtre Feydeau in December 1813. 1 p. of a bifolium, addressed on the verso. Folding creases and light toning; overall in fine condition. 7.25 x 9.5 inches (18.4 x 24 cm).Together with an autograph document announcing the new biweekly publication, L'Indicateur musical, français et étranger, edited by a M. César and available at the music shop of Bochsa's father, Charles Bochsa (d. 1821). "It announces regularly, and without requiring the submission of publications, all the musical news. This journal, so necessary to amateurs who wish to be up to date with the publication of airs, romances, overtures, etc., will be of great use, because it also contains news of each new reproduction and where it may be obtained." N.d. [June 1819]. The publication appeared twice a week from July to September 1819. 1 p. Folding creases, light toning; overall fine. 7 x 4.75 inches (18 x 12 cm).A colorful character, Nicholas-Charles Bochsa was appointed harpist to the Imperial Orchestra and began writing operas for the Opéra-Comique in 1813. However, in 1817 he became entangled in counterfeiting, fraud, and forgery, and fled to London to avoid prosecution. He was convicted in absentia, and sentenced to twelve years hard labour and a fine of 4,000 francs. Safe from French law in London, he helped found the Royal Academy of Music in 1821, and became its secretary, but when his criminal conviction was revealed in 1826 he was forced to resign, and became Musical Director of the Kings Theatre in London. In 1839 he became involved in another scandal when he ran off with the opera singer Anna Bishop, wife of the composer Henry Bishop. They performed together in North America and throughout Europe (except France). Bochsa arrived with Anna Bishop in Sydney, Australia, at the time of the gold rush in December 1855, but they gave only one concert together before Bochsa died. Bishop and Bochsa were said to have been the inspiration for Trilby and Svengali in George du Maurier's 1894 novel Trilby.

Thoughts on Instinctive Impulses . . . [Bound with:] Second Thoughts on Instinctive Impulses.

Philadelphia: Printed by Jane Aitken, 1810. [And:] Philadelphia: Printed for the Author, 1813. First edition of each title.. Some evidence of toning and a large tide mark throughout; somewhat worn; free endpapers excised; a good, sound copy.. 2 vols bound in 1, contemporary leather over which has been glued completely (at likely an early date) rough paper as a sort of crude repair or protective jacket, 90, [2], 143 pages. The first title is an uncommon Jane Aitken imprint, and the two titles together mark an interesting early work of American psychology from the English-born American eccentric and financial reformer Thomas Law (1756-1834). Law implemented important reforms in India during his service with the East India Company, then came to the United States in 1793. He was an early and enthusiastic promoter of Washington, D. C. and brief married into the Custis family in 1796. (See the DNB.)

Bibliotheca Stanleiana. A Splendid Selection of Rare and Fine Books, from the Distinguished Library of Colonel Stanley. The Selection contains all his rare Italian and Spanish Poetry, Novels and Romances; an extraordinary Collection of Voyages and Travels,...all the old Chronicles...Splendid Books of Natural History

History…the Books will be sold by Auction by R.H. Evans…on Friday the 30th of April, and Seven Following Days. 3 p.l., 71, [1] pp. 8vo, attractive antique half-diced russia & marbled boards, spine gilt, outer & lower edges uncut. London: 1813. Thomas Stanley (1749-1818), "was a book-lover possessing more knowledge of the contents of his library than many of those who were his contemporaries and juniors. It is refreshing to read the notes in the catalogue of his sale; evidently written by himself, when one has become tired of seeing over and over again the stereotyped inanities of most auction-catalogues. Colonel Stanley lived at a time when Italian literature was in vogue; Don Bowle was an elder contemporary whose example led Mr. Croft and Colonel Stanley to make acquaintance with Castilian books. Many works in the languages of the two peninsulas gave a certain distinction to the small but choice library of Colonel Stanley."-Quaritch, Dictionary, p. 271. This was one of the fine libraries which came onto the market as a result of the bibliomania which was so evident at the Roxburghe sale in 1812. Stanley's library made the very large sum of 8232 pounds. 1136 lots, ruled in red and priced throughout with buyers' names. Heber was a major purchaser at this sale. The first edition of both volumes of Don Quixote made 42 pounds and was purchased by the Duke of Devonshire. Fine copy. ? Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, cols. 584-85.

Paris, Delespinasse, Delaunaux, Nepveu, l'Auteur, 1813.

1813. 8vo. XXIV, 93, (1 blank) pp. With frontispiece giving an overall view of a skating-rink, engraved by Ambroise Tardieu, and 7 engraved plates, each showing a skater in a different position, all in beautiful contemporary handcolouring. Contemp. wrappers. First edition of the first French manual on the art of ice-skating, charmingly illustrated with engraved plates. At the end a short dictionary of ice-skater's terminology is added. The book is dedicated to Mademoiselle Gosselin, first dancer at the Imperial Academy of Music. The author, Jean Garcin, was far ahead of his time. His book, laying special emphasis on the aesthetic side of ice-skating, remained unique and was not republished for nearly forty years, when the subject finally became interesting to the general public. The book is still a jewel, describing all the various ice-skating figures and combinations in full and giving a complete account of the most advanced stage of skating lore. It was one of the earliest separate works devoted entirely to blade-skating in any language. - Spine slightly damaged, some plates misbound. A fine copy. Foster, Bibliography of Skating, 35. Cf. Nigel Brown, Ice-Skating. A History, 1959, pp. 57-64. Lipperheide 3042w. Not in NUC.

De vegetatione et climate in Helvetia Septentrionali inter flumina Rhenum et Arolam observatis et cum summi septentrionis comparatis tentamen.

Turici Helvetorum (Zürich), Fuessli, 1813. 8vo (20.5 x 12.1 cm). xcviii, 200 pp., one folding table, three folded engraved plates. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt ornaments at head and food; red morocco label with gilt title. All edges red.= Göran "Georg" Wahlenberg (1780-1851) was a Swedish naturalist and plant geographer who promoted floristic and systematic research in Sweden. "In 1812-14 Wahlenberg travelled in Switzerland... His researches in the Swiss alps resulted in the book "De Vegetatione et Climate in Helvetia...", in which he gives an account of the plant regions and their designations, the tree limits, and the lower and upper limits of the various plants, comparing also the vegetation in northern Switzerland with that of Lapland". (Fries, Short History of Botany in Sweden, p. 69). The first plate is a nice profile of the vegetation in the Swiss Alps. Some, mainly marginal foxing. Front pastedown paper partly missing, a few pages a bit foxed, mostly marginal; title page and dedication page leaves with a restoration in upper margin, but in all a very good copy in a nice contemporary binding. Arabia. London, 1813.

1813. Hand-coloured engraved map (775 x 554 mm). Stunning large format map of Saudi Arabia, the Persian Gulf, Red Sea and vicinity. The map is dominated by the Great Desert and Province of Neged. Marvelous detail of the mountains, rivers etc. Highly detailed regional map, one of the best regional maps of the area to appear in an English Atlas during the period. Pinkerton's now rare elephant folio atlas is one of the best engraved works of the period. While lesser known than the more common atlases by Cary & Thomson, it is a superior work, especially in the detail of the maps. Not in Tibbets, Al-Qasimi and Al Ankary.
