        Arabia. London, 1813.

1813. Hand-coloured engraved map (775 x 554 mm). Stunning large format map of Saudi Arabia, the Persian Gulf, Red Sea and vicinity. The map is dominated by the Great Desert and Province of Neged. Marvelous detail of the mountains, rivers etc. Highly detailed regional map, one of the best regional maps of the area to appear in an English Atlas during the period. Pinkerton's now rare elephant folio atlas is one of the best engraved works of the period. While lesser known than the more common atlases by Cary & Thomson, it is a superior work, especially in the detail of the maps. Not in Tibbets, Al-Qasimi and Al Ankary.

Essay on the Cause of Chemical Proportions, and on some Circumstances Relating to them: together with a short and easy way of expressing them" in Annals of Philosophy, or Magazine of Chemistry, Mineralogy, Mechanics, Natural History, Agriculture and the Arts 3 (III), pp. 443-454, 1813 and 3 pp. 51-62, 93-106, 244-255, 353-364, 1814 WITH "Experiments on the Nature of Azote, of Hydrogen, and of Ammonia, and upon the Degrees of Oxidation of which Azote is susceptible" in Annals of Philosophy, or Magazine of Chemistry, Mineralogy, Mechanics, Natural History, Agriculture and the Arts 2 (II), pp. 276-284 and 357-368, 1813

HANDSOMELY BOUND FIRST EDITIONS OF BERZELIUS'S DEVELOPMENT OF A SYSTEM OF SYMBOLS THAT FORMED THE BASIS OF THE MODERN LANGUAGE OF CHEMISTRY. Beginning in 1813 and with the paper "Essay on the Cause of Chemical Proportions", Berzelius published his first essay on the proportions of elements in compounds. "The essay commenced with a general description, introduced his new symbolism, examined all the known elements, included a table of specific weights and finished with a selection of compounds written in his new formalisation" (Wikipedia). "Following the precedent set by Linneaus, who assigned a definitive Latin name to every plant and animal, Berzelius adopted - or invented - Latin terms for the elements whenever possible. He took the first letter of this name (capitalised) as its atomic symbol, adding a distinguishing second letter (in lower case) for elements with the 'Berzelius adopted- or invented - Latin terms for the elements' Dalton's list of atomic and molecular symbols same initial. To iron he gave the symbol Fe, from ferrum - the metal's name in Latin. The Romans never knew metallic sodium, but they called common soda (sodium carbonate) natron, and from this Berzelius coined the name natrium for the element, giving its atom the symbol Na. Having organised the elements, he then tried to create a notation for compounds which revealed their chemical nature, as well as their constituent elements. "This task proved more difficult, and Berzelius (and others) went on adjusting the system for years. At first he indicated the numbers of atoms with superscripts, so that sulfur dioxide was written SO2. Later, he tried denoting oxygen atoms by dots over the symbol of the oxidised element, representing sulfur dioxide as - though eventually, the numerical subscript version (SO2) became the standard form. At first, many chemists were not impressed by the Berzelian symbols - Dalton himself hated them. For some years even Berzelius did not use the symbols extensively in his publications, but by the mid-century they were generally accepted. Today, they still provide us with the tools for representing elements and compounds unknown to Berzelius and his contemporaries. "Outside the laboratory, Berzelius' life was relatively uneventful. He travelled widely in his later years, was honoured by foreign universities and learned societies, and continued to take an interest in research after his retirement in 1832. In 1835 he married Elizabeth Poppius (an old friend's daughter), and received the title of Baron from the Swedish monarchy. He died in 1848, four decades after being elected to Sweden's Royal Academy of Science in the eventful year of 1808" (Sutton, Chemistry World, Nov. 2008). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: C. Baldwin. 4to. Volume II: [vii], 480 pages, [4]. 7 plates. Volume III: [viii], 480 pages, [4]. 5 plates. Both volumes very handsomely rebound in three-quarter calf over marbled paper boards (purposefully rubbed a bit by the conservator for aging). Five raised bands at the spine; elaborate gilt-tooling in the compartments; gilt lettered at the spine. New endpapers. Bright and exceptionally clean throughout. Near fine condition.

Printed naval patent signed ("Np"). Le palais des Tuileries [Paris], 25. III. 1813.

1813. 490 x 350 mm. Blank form. Naval patent for an unidentified American boat, counter-signed by trade secretary Jean-Baptiste Henry Collin (1776-1837), state secretary Pierre Antoine Noël Bruno comte Daru (1767-1829), naval secretary Denis Decrès (1761-1820), and the director general of customs. Fine document from the age of the Napoleonic Wars, when the English army had occupied the Iberian Peninsula, fighting against Napoléon's troops, and field marshal Wellington was about to commence his final (and ultimately successful) attack. The present letter patent was issued by the French consul in Charlestown, New York, Boston or Baltimore and permitted American ships to move more or less freely toward France. The British warships were blocking the U.S. ports and obstructing American trade with France - one of the causes for the War of 1812, not resolved until December 1814. - Large reinforced tears to folds; slight edge damage, otherwise in good condition. Left edge trimmed, touching the printed text of the counter-leaf.

1813Paris.

        The Life of Nelson.

London: John Murray, Bookseller to the Admiralty and to the Board of Longitude,, 1813. 2 volumes, octavo, (182 x 106 mm). Contemporary russia, decorative gilt and blind tooled spines, sides with concentric gilt and blind tooled panels (including interlocking "drawer-handle" tools), gilt roll-tool turn-ins, marbled edges and endpapers. Engraved portrait frontispiece to volume I, frontispiece of volume II with five facsimile signatures. Eton "leaving gift" inscription on a preliminary blank in volume I: "From Ld Marsham to J. Farquharson Jun[io]r on his leaving Eton, July 26th 1824": Charles Marsham (1777-1845), second Earl of Romney. Joints partially spilt but firm, touch of foxing to frontispieces. A very good copy, with the half-titles. First edition, large paper copy, of which there were only 500 sets published. Elegantly written and surprisingly even-handed on the issue of the Neapolitan Jacobins, "Southey constructed an early-nineteenth century hero as a model for the young - in his words, a 'patriotic manual.' He told a friend that he would write 'such a life of Nelson as shall be put into the hands of every youth destined for the Navy'" (Roger Knight, The Pursuit of Victory,2006, p.542); as it most assuredly was, and many more besides, coming to dominate the Nelson biography market and perpetually in print. A very pretty set.

Letterpress title, advertisement leaves in English and French with fifty-three copper engraved plates, (as called for), with English and French descriptions. Contemporary, full, straight-grain green morocco, wide flat bands, spine in five panels, title in gilt to second panel, remaining panels with volute corner pieces which join making up a frame, covers with wide Greek key style border, gilt roll to inner edges, a.e.g. Some rubbing to extremities, a few scrapes and dinks to covers, corners bumped. Internally some light browning and foxing throughout, some offsetting, though many plates are very clean and bright. Seemingly first issued in parts in the late eighteenth century, Oxford has a copy described as , presumably with six plates in each part, giving a total of forty-eight, this edition with an extra five plates, all of which were published in 1813. Usually found bound in landscape format, this copy bound in portrait, lacks the half-title found in some copies. Samuel Middiman (1750-1831) "was apprenticed in 1767 to William Byrne (1743-1805), an engraver who had studied with Aliamet and Wille in Paris, and who worked for Boydell in the later 1760s. Middiman is also said to have worked with Woollett and Bartolozzi. He exhibited at the Free Society of Artists in 1771 and showed drawings and prints with the Society of Artists from 1772 to 1777, giving addresses in St James's Square and then Wells Street, Oxford Road. In 1780-82 and 1795-7 he exhibited drawings and stained drawings at the academy, giving addresses in Margaret Street, Winchester Row, and Warren Place. On 5 April 1788 he married Martha Woodyer at St Pancras. Middiman produced three large plates and one smaller illustration for the Shakspeare Gallery. As a specialist landscape etcher his skills were much in demand, and he is said to have worked on many plates issued under the sole name of other engravers, for instance John Pye. He produced the fifty-three plates for Select Views in Great Britain (1814) and sixteen plates for Picturesque Castles and Abbeys in England and Wales (1807-11). About 1812 he gave up engraving and appears to have turned to landscape painting, exhibiting pictures at the British Institution in 1810-11 and again in 1824. He died on 20 December 1831 at Cirencester Place, Westbourne Park" (Oxford DNB)

[FOUR AUTOGRAPH LETTERS, SIGNED, BY MAJOR JOSEPH HALL, DISCUSSING THE PREPAREDNESS OF HIS BATTALION AT THE OUTSET OF THE WAR OF 1812 AND PROVIDING AN ACCOUNT OF THE BATTLE OF QUEENSTON HEIGHTS]

Phelps, N.Y., 1813. [28]pp., including two integral address leaves. Folio. Previously folded. Light wear, with a few small chips and minor worming, slightly affecting text on occasion. Wax remnants and small areas of paper loss caused by seal removal on several leaves. Light tanning and occasional foxing. Written in a neat, legible hand. Very good. A set of four autograph letters written by Major Joseph Hall, who commanded an American battalion of volunteer infantry at the outset of the War of 1812. The unit was active in upstate New York, near Buffalo and the Niagara River, and was a participant in the battle of Queenston Heights, the first major engagement of the war that took place on October 13th, 1812, as American forces attempted to cross into Canada. All four letters are addressed to Major Epaphrus Hoyt, the first three of which, dated August 1812 to March 1813, relate to Hall's desire to reprint a portion of a military manual written by Hoyt, entitled PRACTICAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR MILITARY OFFICERS and published in 1811, in order to better train his men. In the first letter, Hall seeks permission to obtain a copy of the manual for the purpose of reproducing it, "Believing it as I do to be the best published in America." In the event, Hoyt allowed him to reprint more than he had initially requested and to make his own additions, such that in the third letter, Hall writes, "Agreeable to your request I send you one copy of the extracts, your condescention in permitting me to publish more than I requested renders it much more complete & useful to the Battalion that it otherwise would have been," and promises to write again with an account of the battle of Queenston Heights. This detailed narrative makes up the bulk of the fourth, much lengthier letter, dated May 9th, 1813. In line with his requests for Hoyt's training guide, Hall bemoans the poor preparation of the American militia, the prolonged postponement of the attack on Queenston from the American camp at Lewiston across the Niagara, and the lack of intelligence regarding the numbers and position of the British army. He writes that his unit, "Arrived at Lewiston on the 1st day of October last. My Corps were all in good health & spirits but far from being suitably disciplined for action & but a small proportion of them that had rifles fit for action." Furthermore, the attack, which was delayed for days by a continual rain, was ill-conceived at any rate because it was based on the "very erroneous idea" that "there were only troops enough to form a chain of sentinels on the river from one end to the other." In his extensive account, Hall recounts the series of American mishaps that made up the battle and his own role in them. The crossing of the Niagara was botched, with three boats running afoul of each other, "So that they all three went downstream below the landing before they could reach the shore....They were all soon taken prisoners their communication being cut off from the rest." Hall's men were involved in the first engagement with British troops, once some of the remaining American forces had ascended Queenston Heights, but, "Seeing their force so far superior and no reinforcement yet arrived," Hall, "ordered a retreat, firing, & united the 2 lines in order to extend our line. At this point, according to Hall, the initial attack was joined by the rest of the American army, "And the engagement became general, which lasted above an hour." Though the Americans eventually obtained and held an advantageous position for much of the day, the arrival of British reinforcements forced them to withdraw to the river, where many were trapped and captured while awaiting transport. Of this end to the battle, Hall writes that the British, "commenced the attack with their flying artillery... which soon broke our troops to pieces so that the Infantry and the Indians had nothing to do but charge upon them and soon drove them to the river side where they were compelled to surrender or to be cut to pieces." In all, Hall estimates that 300 Americans were killed and 1000 captured in the battle, though the actual casualty numbers were nearer to 100 killed and 900 captured. A comprehensive and captivating account of the first major battle of the War of 1812, with many insightful details and sharp opinions.

(source internet)

In 1812 he was appointed secretary to the Calcutta Madrasa, and superintended various translations of English works into Persian then in progress. From 1814 until 1817 he had charge of the East India Company's press at Calcutta, and in 1818 he became secretary to the stationery committee. Owing to ill health Lumsden left India on leave in March 1820, and travelled with his cousin, Thomas Lumsden, through Persia, Georgia, and Russia to England. An account of this journey was published by Thomas Lumsden in 1822. Lumsden returned to India in 1821. In 1808 he received the degree of LLD from King's College, Aberdeen. He died at Tooting Common, Surrey, on 31 March 1835." (ODNB). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
