        Gottfried August Bürger's Ehestands-Geschichte. Titel, 258 S. Schlichte Kartonage d. Z. (Kanten berieben).

Berlin und Leipzig, Ferdinand Schulz u. Comp. (d. i. Hamburg, Vollmer), 1812. - Sehr seltene erste Ausgabe. Exlibris. – Goed. IV l, 991, 11. Hayn-G. I 498 f. Borst 1149. Nicht bei Jestädt, Vollmer. [Attributes: First Edition]

HISTORY OF ENGLAND, From the Earliest Times to the Death of George the Second... With a Continuation to the Treaty of Amiens by Charles Coote

London: For F. C. and J. Rivington; et al, 1812. 4 volumes. A very early edition of Goldsmith's history, corrected, and only the second edition to include Coote's continuation up to 1802. Tall 8vos, in handsome contemporary mottled calf, the boards with gilt chain framework, the spines with elegant central gilt devices in compartments between extensively decorated flat bands, two compartments with contrasting red and black morocco labels gilt lettered and tooled, board edges hatched in blind, page edges speckled. viii, 422; 447; 431; 567 pp. A beautiful, gentlemanly and pristine set, the text appearing essentially as mint, very fresh and crisp, the bindings strong and sturdy and handsome. A VERY HANDSOME SET IN FULL CONTEMPORARY STATE OF GOLDSMITH'S IMPORTANT POLITICAL HISTORY OF ENGLAND. Though best remembered now for his novels, Goldsmith's "History" was a staple of 19th century upper education, thus is rarely found in such fine condition. It is recognized for its balanced and unbiased delivery, its largest criticisms were for being too concise. Goldsmith's own work begins with the pre-Roman Britons and ends with George II. Coote's very excellent continuation provides us with an entire volume on the age of George III, whose Reign was longer than any other British monarch before him. Events in this extraordinary period of time included the Seven Years War, the American Revolution, the French Revolution and the early Napoleonic years.

        Tales of Fashionable Life

London: Printed for J. Johnson, 1812. Complete set of Anglo-Irish educator and novelist Maria Edgeworth's Tales of Fashionable Life: the second edition of Volumes I-III, and the first edition of Volumes IV-VI. Known as "the Great Maria," Edgeworth was widely acclaimed in her day: her emphasis on practical, hands-on education for children was influential on both sides of the Atlantic, and bestsellers like Castle Rackrent and Belinda inspired a generation of English novelists. Tales of Fashionable Life includes a series of short works, most notably The Absentee, which traces the exploitation of the Irish land and people at the hands of absentee landowners: "a great part of your timber, the growth of a century -- swallowed in the entertainments of one winter in London!" Informed by Edgeworth's firsthand knowledge of Anglo-Irish manners and politics, The Absentee's regional realism impressed writers as diverse as Walter Scott, Ivan Turgenev, and John Ruskin. This set was part of the library at Ashley Combe in Somerset, built in 1799 and improved in 1835 for the benefit of Ada Byron, daughter of poet Lord Byron and young bride of Ashley Combe's owner, William King, later the First Earl of Lovelace. A gifted polymath, Ada Lovelace would work with mathematician Charles Babbage on his Difference Engine and Analytical Engine, and her notes on the latter, which contain an algorithm for generating Bernoulli numbers, are often cited as the first computer program. In 1886, decades after Ada's death, the Earl purchased the Ben Damph Forest in Scotland, and built Ben Damph House, where these books eventually settled. A near-fine set of literary classics, with a connection to two pioneering nineteenth-century Englishwomen. Six twelvemo volumes, contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled paper boards, spines ruled and numbered in gilt, red morocco spine labels lettered in gilt and tooled with a floral gilt border. All half-titles present. Contemporary stamp of Ashley Combe to front pastedowns, later stamp of Ben Damph Forest Library to front free endpapers. Shelfwear to paper boards and corners.

1812. 2¾ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Hrn. Rösch den Friedrichsd'or dafür an mich mitgeben. Canandaigua [NY]: J.D. Bemis, 1812. First Edition. 12mo, 215x pp, in original full leather with gilt spine label. A sound, very good copy with edges rubbed, some chipping and toning to endpapers, previous owner's name ink-stamped on top edge of text block.         1812 Manuscript Walford Herefordshire

This is a fascinating and historically important original manuscript document concerning the South Herefordshire village of Walford, near Ross-On-Wye, being a survey carried out on the inhabitants of the area in order to make a new Poor Rate. The "Poor Rate" was a Poor Law Tax levied in each parish to provide poor relief; the survey was carried out by a S. J.Harris of Hereford, the initials may not be read correctly by me, but his name is given on the title page, the book runs to over eighty used manuscript pages in which all the parishes inhabitants and addresses have been recorded, along with the calculated rates of tax to be paid for each household, some of the properties mentioned are Wallford Court, Lower Mill, Old Hill, Lower Whitehall, Coughton Mill, Cowberry, "Labour in Vain", Bishop's Wood, Howl Hill, Lays Hill, &c, . One hundred and twenty six homes and families recorded. The details have been entered in an old leather bound notebook measuring 7.5 inches by 5 inches approx., the author has also recorded the dates of some of Napoleon's movements in 1814-1815 on the inside of the front page, AN HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT ON THE VILLAGE OF WALFORD IN SOUTH HEREFORDSHIRE

[Introducing electricity through experiments]. Constantinople, 1227 AH (= 1812 AD).

1812. 8vo (222 x 150 mm). 16 ff., mostly with 24 text lines to each page (text area 155 x 70 mm). Written in excellent Naskh script with black ink on waxed paper. Headings and highlighted words in red. Two (folded) plates on velin paper (watermark: A. Stace 1802). With carefully executed pen-and-ink drawings with notes in red (167 x 194 mm each). Contemp. red half leather. Covered with Ebru paper, with leather edges and marbled endpapers. The original Ottoman Turkish manuscript of one of the most important texts in the history of electrical engineering and science: the complete treatise on electrical fluid, as drafted by the Turkish engineer Yahya Naci the same year. "In the early 19th century, the teaching of science at the Imperial Engineering School in Istanbul was mostly based on the material translated from textbooks compiled for the French 'grandes écoles'. Translations and compilations were generally made by the professors of the school. Yahya Naci Efendi (d. 1824), a lecturer in French language and sciences, compiled in 1812 a treatise introducing the properties of electricity through experiments. His aim was also to show that the lightning flash and the thunderbolt were electrical phenomenons. Yahya Naci's main source was the chapter on electricity of Mathurin-Jacques Brisson's (d. 1795) 'Traité Elémentaire de Physique', a popular book of physics in French colleges. This translation is important because Yahya Naci endeavoured to create Ottoman terms from Arabic regarding electricity and because it points to the initiatives in introducing experimentation in the teaching in the Imperial Engineering School" (Günergün). The colophon states the name of the scribe as "Yahya Naqi" and the date "Zilqa'da 1227 H.", proving that the present volume constitutes the author's long-lost original manuscript. - In very fine condition; only a few insignificant spots.
