James Madison and James Monroe Appoint a Head of Military Procurement and Distribution During the War of 1812

James Madison and James Monroe Appoint a Head of Military Procurement and Distribution During the War of 1812.& The highest ranking wartime appointment we have seen& & When the War of 1812 broke out, getting supplies and munitions to the armed forces became a matter of great urgency. The system in place soon proved to be a great failure, as official reports from Gen. Henry Dearborn and other commanders of troops on the Canadian frontier showed that as early as November and December, 1812, they were in dire extremities on account of deficiency of rations, arising from failure of contractors to make deliveries according to their contracts. President Madison and Congress determined to integrate the acquisitions and distribution schemes and to name a single director to manage the entire effort. On the 3d of March, 1813, an act was passed with the significant title of "An Act better to provide for the supplies of the Army of the United States, and for the accountability of persons intrusted with the same." One section of this act provided that there should be a "superintendent-general of military supplies," whose functions were to keep proper accounts of all the military stores and supplies purchased for, and distributed to, the U.S. Army; to prescribe the forms of all returns and accounts of stores and supplies; and to perform all other duties respecting the general superintendence, purchase, transportation, and safe-keeping of military stores and supplies, and the accountability therefor as might be prescribed by the Secretary of War.& & Congressman Richard Cutts of the Maine District of Massachusetts married Anna Payne, sister of Dolley Madison, and was thus President Madison's brother-in-law. Cutts was defeated for reelection in 1812 and his last day in that office was March 3, 1813. Madison named him to fill this important office in this very document.& & Document Signed, Washington, March 29, 1813, stating "That in pursuance of the Act of Congress entitled 'An Act better to provide for the supplies of the army of the United States and for the accountability of persons entrusted with the same...,'" it appoints Richard Cutts of Massachusetts as Superintendant General of Military Supplies. The document is signed by President Madison (the signature is light though legible), and also by James Monroe as Secretary of War (his signature is much stronger). This is the highest ranking appointment during the War of 1812 that we have seen, nor does a search of auction records reveal any others.

A Practical Treatise on the Law of Nations, Relative to the Legal

1812. Joseph Chitty on the Law of Nations Chitty, Joseph [1776-1841]. A Practical Treatise on the Law of Nations, Relative to the Legal Effect of War on the Commerce of Belligerents and Neutrals; And Orders in Council and Licences. London: Printed for W. Clarke and Sons, 1812. xii, 296 pp. Octavo (8-1/2"x 5-1/2"). Original publisher boards, rebacked retaining original spine and printed paper title label, untrimmed edges. Some rubbing and faint stains to boards, some abraded and somewhat darkened. Toning, occasional browning and foxing to text, internally clean. * Only edition. Chitty was one of the most wide-ranging and prolific legal writers of the nineteenth-century. This treatise and an edition of Beawes's Lex Mercatoria (1813) were his two contributions to international law. Marvin's Legal Bibliography (1847), though critical of the Practical Treatise, finds merit in its digest of Sir William Scott's judgments in prize cases (190). It is also interesting because it summarizes the British view of wartime commerce at the outbreak of the War of 1812, a point Chitty makes in the Preface. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 2:63.

Cfr. Graesse,IV,58 e Brunet,VI,28241 / 28242 per la I e la II ediz. Solo qualche lieve fiorit. altrim. esempl. ben conservato.

Junius: Including Letters by the Same Writer, Under Other Signatures (now first collected) to Which are Added his Confidential Correspondence with Mr. Wilkes, and his Private Letters Addressed to Mr. H. S. Woodfall. In three volumes

nbsp;London - F.C. and J. Rivington et al, 1812 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Agorgeous set of thiscollection ofcontroversial political lettersfrom the mysterious 'Junius', published in the Public Advertiser between 1769 and 1772. Features frontispieces in every volume and numerous further plates, some folding, including examples of Junius's handwriting and portraits of eighteenth-century political figures. Junius (fl. 17681773), political writer, was the pseudonym adopted by the author (or possibly authors) of a series of letters which appeared once or twice monthly (sometimes more often) in the Public Advertiser, a leading London newspaper owned by Henry Sampson Woodfall, between 21 January 1769 and 21 January 1772. In this series Juniusnamed after the popular republican hero Lucius Junius Brutusopposed the policies of George III and the administrations of the serving prime ministers, the duke of Grafton and Lord North. Now a classic of English political commentary, the correspondence owes its influence to three interrelated factors: the high whig philosophy espoused to attack tory policies and celebrated political personalities; the literary power of the letters, one of the most effective uses of slanderous polemic ever employed in English political controversy; and, finally, the uncertainty surrounding their authorship. DNBCondition: In half morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally, extremely attractive and in excellent condition with very little shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Lovely and bright and clean throughout, with just the odd lightly spottedpage, particularly the facsimile handwriting plates,or instance of slight offsetting from the plates. Overall: NEAR FINE..

        The Pontic Rhododendron

Robert James Thornton, 1812. Aquatint printed in color and finished by hand. Image measures 10 1/2" x 7 1/4". Sheet measures 14 5/8" x 12". This lovely print depicts a lavender-colored rhododendron with a small, yellow butterfly to its right. Drawn by Peter Charles Henderson and engraved by John Roffe (c.1769-1850), the print appeared in Robert James Thornton's 1812 edition of "The Temple of Flora." This book featured smaller-scale re-engravings of the floral images from Thornton's original 1802 edition. "The Temple of Flora" is one of the most admired illustrated botanical set ever published in Britain. This copy of the print is in good condition, with slight browning on the edges of the margins not affecting the image and very light off-setting throughout. Dr. Robert John Thornton (1768-1837) was an English physician and botanical writer. A specialist in medical botany, Thornton dedicated the later part of his life to publishing collections of floral plates. "The Temple of Flora" was the final and most ambitious volume of "A New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Von Linnæus," which Thornton commissioned and compiled between 1797 and 1807. This print is a lovely example of his work.

String-bound, fukuro-toji, original printed paper title labels, b+w woodblock depictions of the "Famous Mountains of Japan." A work justly famed for its accurate representation of the mountains in question. According to Mitchell, this is the third printing, done in Bunka 9 [1812], some eight years after the original edition, but still retaining the freshness and vigor of line for which the book is known. Volumes 1 and 2 are clean. The final volume has spotted covers and a faint tide line at the bottom edge, below the illustrations throughout most of the volume, that rises near the end, and some slight marginal worming. Philadelphia: Moses Thomas, 1812.. 324,242,[17]pp. plus engraved titlepage and six plates. Contemporary red morocco, gilt. Ownership stamping on cover, somewhat defaced, reading "E. Gerry." Minor foxing and soiling. Very good. Illustrated Book of Common Prayer for the Episcopal Church. This copy is notable for the ownership stamping on the cover: E. Gerry. Since, unfortunately, there is no inscription in the book, it is not possible to say definitively if this E. Gerry is Elbridge Gerry, the Founding Father; however, Elbridge Gerry was an Episcopalian and the time frame is correct (he died in 1814). As a man of stature, he surely would have owned a lovely copy of the prayer book, such as this. If this was indeed Elbridge Gerry's copy, it would have been used by him during his term as Vice President. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 24856, 26534. GRIFFITHS 1812/23.
