        [Introducing electricity through experiments].

Constantinople, 1227 AH (= 1812 AD).. 8vo (222 x 150 mm). 16 ff., mostly with 24 text lines to each page (text area 155 x 70 mm). Written in excellent Naskh script with black ink on waxed paper. Headings and highlighted words in red. Two (folded) plates on velin paper (watermark: A. Stace 1802). With carefully executed pen-and-ink drawings with notes in red (167 x 194 mm each). Contemp. red half leather. Covered with Ebru paper, with leather edges and marbled endpapers.. The original Ottoman Turkish manuscript of one of the most important texts in the history of electrical engineering and science: the complete treatise on electrical fluid, as drafted by the Turkish engineer Yahya Naci the same year. "In the early 19th century, the teaching of science at the Imperial Engineering School in Istanbul was mostly based on the material translated from textbooks compiled for the French 'grandes ecoles'. Translations and compilations were generally made by the professors of the school. Yahya Naci Efendi (d. 1824), a lecturer in French language and sciences, compiled in 1812 a treatise introducing the properties of electricity through experiments. His aim was also to show that the lightning flash and the thunderbolt were electrical phenomenons. Yahya Naci's main source was the chapter on electricity of Mathurin-Jacques Brisson's (d. 1795) 'Traite Elementaire de Physique', a popular book of physics in French colleges. This translation is important because Yahya Naci endeavoured to create Ottoman terms from Arabic regarding electricity and because it points to the initiatives in introducing experimentation in the teaching in the Imperial Engineering School" (Günergün, cf. below). The colophon states the name of the scribe as "Yahya Naqi" and the date "Zilqa'da 1227 H.", proving that the present volume contains the author's long-lost original manuscript. - In very fine condition; only a few insignificant spots. - Feza Günergün, Deneylerle elektrigi tanitan bir Türkce eser: Yahya Naci Efendi'nin Risale-i Seyyale-i Berkiyye'si. In: Osmanli Bilimi Arastirmalari IX/1-2 (2007-2008), pp. 19-50.

        Autograph letter signed.

      N. p., 30 Dec. 1812.. 4to. 3 pp. on a single bifolium.. To Colonel Fullerton, complaining of her lack of rest from caring for her daughter's illness and having just completed her narrative (chronicling the diplomatic services of herself and her late lover, Horatio Nelson). "I have been so much occupied by writing my narrative of Services that I have had not any time to write or scarcely to sleep and my Dear Horatia having the Hooping Cough I have not had rest for many weeks--my narrative is gone to the printer I only Hope He will take my Case in to his Consideration[.] A very little bond [would] make me comfortable and to finish Horatia's education[.] according to my own mind she is delightful & amiable & very clever and I spare not any pains or expense for her[.] [...] I find a pleasure in your recollection of me that I Cannot describe & shall find Double Satisfaction when I can again tell you the story in person of my poor unfortunate friend the Q[ueen] of Naples [...] I have my drawing room of a morning and many per[sons] come in. I wish you was one [...]". - At the top of the address panel, she adds an apologetic postscript: "Pray excuse this scrawl written in a hurry and not worth the postage but as my prospects brighten so shall my letters be more entertaining". - Before his death, Nelson had left instructions providing for Emma and Horatia, a request that was ignored by the British Government. The "narrative of Services" she mentions was her attempt to obtain a 20,000 grant to compensate for her diplomatic services with the Neapolitan royal family (she was a close friend of Queen of Naples, Maria Carolina). The narrative was never published, but the original manuscript is now housed at the Houghton Library at Harvard. Emma's lavish spending soon depleted the small pension left to her by her late husband, Sir William, and within six months of the present letter Emma and her daughter would land in debtor's prison. In 1814 Emma fled to France to escape her creditors where she soon turned to drink and died the following year in poverty. - Folds; seal tears with some loss to text on third page repaired with paper; mounting remnants on terminal page along center vertical fold affecting some text.

- Holzmann/Bohatta 3813. - Lipperheide Oc 35. - Loewe, Bibliographie der schlesischen Geschichte 2912.

He spent 15 years at sea, was then apprenticed to a stone-mason, and developed a passion for minerals, touring British mines, collecting minerals for the cabinet of the King of Spain. In 1804 he was commissioned by the Prince Regent of Portugal to go to Rio de la Plata to assess the value of the gold and diamond industries that might revitalise Brazil's ailing economy. After various setbacks and adventures including imprisonment and accompanying General Whitelocke's unsuccessful expedition against Buenos Ayres, he reached Brazil where he visited the diamond mines of Minas Geraes and other parts of the interior during 1809?10. He was given access to government archives and allowed to make copies of charts and other documents. He returned to England in 1811 and opened a shop in London selling minerals to collectors and he made a reputation for himself as practical mineralogist, writing several books on the subject. There is an advert for his commercial activities on the last page of the book. The first 3 chapters are concerned with Montevideo and Buenos Ayres, the remaining 17 are on the mining, agriculture, the cities, culture, customs etc of Brazil. The plates show views of washing for diamonds at Mandango, gold washing at Jaragua near Sao Paulo, a topaz mine at Capon, machinery, River Jigitonbonha, and a plate of crystals of diamonds, topaz and tourmaline, 1 hand coloured and heightened with gold of minerals collected by the author on his tour and 1 of shells.         CURSE OF KEHAMA

London Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown 1812 - 2 volumes. A very early printing, only two years after the original. A copy with fine provenance, being that of Anne MacKenzie Gladstone, sister of William Ewart Gladstone, four times British Prime Minister. With further family ownership inscription to the free-fly. 12mo, in lovely antique polished calf of the period, the covers decorated with a gilt ruled rolled frame in a fan and flower motif, the spines with gilt stippled raised bands gilt ruled, the compartments with elaborate gilt tooled frames surrounding a central gilt tooled floral device, each volume with two navy morocco labels gilt lettered and rolled in blind, gilt tooled board edges and turn-ins, page edges marbled. Each volume with dated 1818 autograph signature of Anne MacKenzie Gladstone and 1852 signature of T. Gladstone (likely her brother, Thomas Gladstone) on the front blanks. xi, [2], 252; [2], 213 pp. A very fine set, in a wonderful state of preservation, the paper fresh and clean, the bindings solid, handsome and in fully original state with just a light bit of wear to the extremities and very minor chipping at the spine tips. A BEAUTIFUL SET WITH FINE PROVENANCE, OF THIS CLASSIC BY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THE LAKE COUNTRY POETS. A FINE PRINTING OF THE POEM AND WITH EXTENSIVE NOTES ON INDIAN RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY. Southey was a contemporary of Wordsworth, Shelley and Keats and a highly important poet in his own right. "Courses are like young chickens, they always come home to roost." This is an uncommonly fresh and fine set of Southey’s epic poem. ‘KEHAMA’ was based on Hindu mythology, but even more so on Southey’s own memories of his school days when he suffered terrible insomnia. It was one of his school mates, "a dark and mysterious boy", who formed the basis for one of the poem’s villains. Although the poem describes Hindu myth, it is heavily influenced by Zoroastrian theology and the ideal of a dualistic moral system. Part of Southey's focus on India stems from the recent British colonial expansion into India and rising interest by British citizens for Indian culture. Critics praised the quality of the poem's language. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Wissenschaft der subjectiven Logik oder die Lehre vom Begriff: Series TP on verso [facing] TP + [III]-VI = Vorbericht + VII-X = Inhalt + [1]-403. Octavo. All Three in First Edition. Hegel's Science of Logic in a Gorgeous Matched Contemporary SetAll Three Books bound in Two Volumes - Each in First Edition (1812, 1813 & 1816)Hegel's The Science of Logic provided a complete outline for his vision of logic; an ontology that incorporates the traditional Aristotelian syllogism not as a foundational element, but rather as a sub-component of his system. For Hegel, the most important achievement of German Idealism (starting with Kant and culminating in his own philosophy), was the demonstration that Reality is shaped through and through by mind and, when properly understood, actually is nothing other than Mind. Thus ultimately the structures of thought and reality, subject and object, are identical. This means that, for Hegel, the underlying structure of all Reality is ultimately rational so logic is not merely about reasoning or argument but rather is also the rational, structural core of all of Reality and every dimension of it. The Science of Logic thus includes (among other things) analyses of being, nothingness, becoming, existence, reality, essence, reflection, concept, and method. As developed, it includes the fullest description of his dialectic. These three books together are sometimes referred to as the Greater Logic to distinguish it from the condensed version of his thoughts on logic presented in what is called the Lesser Logic, namely the Logic section of his Encyclopedia of the Philosophical Sciences.Hegel wrote 'The Science of Logic' after he had completed his Phenomenology of Spirit and while he was in Nuremberg working at a secondary school and courting his fiancée. It was published in a number of volumes. The first, 'The Objective Logic', has two parts (the Doctrines of Being and Essence) and each part was published in 1812 and 1813 respectively. The second volume, 'The Subjective Logic' was published in 1816 the same year he became a professor of philosophy at Heidelberg. The Science of Logic was found to be too advanced for undergraduate students so Hegel wrote his Lesser Logig for the Encyclopedia which was published in 1817.Hegel considered his Logik to be one of his major works and therefore kept it up to date through constant revision. In 1826, when the book went out of stock, instead of reprinting as requested, he undertook to revise it. By 1831, Hegel had completed a greatly revised and expanded version of the 'Doctrine of Being', but had no time to revise the rest of the book. The Preface to the second edition is dated 7 November 1831, just before his death on 14 November 1831. That edition appeared in 1832, and again in 1834-5 in the posthumous Works. The only English translation has been based on this second edition. matching contemporary ¾ leather with dark green marbled boards. The spines have gilt decorations and the title in gilt on a red field. There is some light wear to the exterior (most especially to the bumped corners), but otherwise the bindings present themselves beautifully. The text is generally clean and bright which comes with a beautiful custom clamshell box with ½ leather over marbled boards and red morocco spine labels. Overall a truly exceptional copy of one of the more important works in Western Philosophy. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

Théorie Analytique des Probabilités.Paris: Courcier, 1812.

First edition of "the most influential book on probability and statistics ever written." (Anders Hald). <br/><br/> "Laplace's great treatise on probability appeared in 1812, with later editions in 1814 and 1820. Its picture of probability theory was entirely different from the picture in 1750. On the philosophical side was Laplace's interpretation of probability as rational belief, with inverse probability as its underpinning. On the mathematical side was the method of generating functions, the central limit theorem, and Laplace's technique for evaluating posterior probabilities. On the applied side, games of chance were still evidence, but they were dominated by problems of data analysis and Bayesian methods for combining probabilities of judgments, which replaced the earlier non-Bayesian methods of Hooper and Bernoulli." (Grattan-Guiness: History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences, p.1301). <br/><br/> "In the Théorie Laplace gave a new level of mathematical foundation and development both to probability theory and to mathematical statistics. ... [It] emerged from a long series of slow processes and once established, loomed over the landscape for a century or more." (Stephen Stigler: Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics, p.329-30). <br/><br/> "It was the first full-scale study completely devoted to a new specialty, ... [and came] to have the same sort of relation to the later development of probability that, for example, Newton's Principia Mathematica had to the later science of mechanics." (DSB). <br/><br/> Evans, First Editions of Epochal Achievements 12; Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 24; Honeyman 1923.. 4to, fine contemporary half calf with vellum corners, pp [vi] 464, [3: errata], pages 149/150 with a crease (from before it was bound and pressed), one leaf has a closed tear in the margin (no loss), and one gathering is lightly browned and some very light spotting to a few leaves.         Histoire de Louis Mandrin, Depuis sa naissance jusqu'a sa mort; Avec un detail de ses curantes, de ses brigandages et de ses supplices.

A Avignon Chez Jean-Albet Joly. 1812 - Small 8vo, 119 x 72 mms., pp. 134 including woodcut frontispiece, original wrappers, uncut; extremities frayed, early reenforcement of spine with cloth. Mandrin (1725 - 1755) is often called the "Robin Hood of France," and there are numerous accounts of his revolt against the tax authorities and his successful career as a smuggler. After numerous escapades and brief encounters with the French militia, he was captured, tried, and put to death by having his arms and legs broken and then tied to a wheel. The first account of his life and adventures was published in the year of his death. The only copy of this edition that I have been able to trace is in the Bibliotheque Nationale.
