        A Catalogue of Books, in the Various Branches of Literature, which Lately formed the Library of a Distinguished Collector;

      and were Sold by Auction by Mr. Jeffery, of Pall Mall: with their Prices, and Purchasers' Names. 2 p.l., 384 pp. Tall 8vo, cont. marbled boards (carefully rebacked & recornered in sheep), flat spine gilt, uncut. London: P. Martin, 1811. The interest aroused by the Heath sale, which took place in April and May of 1810, appears to have been so widespread that the publishers felt justified in republishing the sale catalogue later in 1810, together with the prices realized and the buyers names. They added twenty-two lots, Nos. 4787-4809, which had not appeared in the original catalogue, but were obviously offered at the end of the sale. According to Fletcher, perhaps only 250 copies of the republished catalogue were printed. Due to continued great demand, a new edition of the enlarged second catalogue was prepared in 1811, with a different printer and publisher. Our copy of this new edition is a fine uncut copy, printed on special fine paper, with the printed names of the buyers and prices and the additional lots. It is rare. Benjamin Heath (1704-66), classical scholar and book collector, "was a collector of rare books from the age of thirteen, and in his lifetime distributed his library between two of his sons, but still left a large collection. There was printed in 1810 a 'Catalogue'. Heath was the principal collector of this library, but it was augmented by his son, the Rev. Benjamin Heath."-D.N.B., IX, pp. 339-40. The sale, which provoked Dibdin to paroxysms of enthusiasm (see his Bibliomania, 1811), realized 8,899 pounds. But its contents no longer belonged to Heath: he had sold it for 3,000 pounds to two booksellers, Cuthell and Martin, who then, at a huge profit, had them auctioned by Jeffrey. Heber was the chief buyer at this sale. Fine and handsome copy from the library of A.R.A. Hobson with bookplate. .

        Afbeeldingen van de Kleeding, Zeden en Gewoonten in Holland, met den aanvang der negentiende eeu: Tableaux Des Habillements, des Moeurs et des Costumes en Hollande au Commencement du Dix-Neuvième Siècle.

      4to. Finely and handsomely bound in half tan Regency calf over marbled boards, the spine with 5 raised bands exquisitely and extravagantly decorated in gilt in compartments with a repeating scroll-tool design, lettered direct in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges, housed within a custom-made beige cloth-covered fall-down-back box with green cloth label lettered in gilt; pp. [58]; with fine stipple-engraved, and hand-coloured, allegorical frontispiece of the Muse of Drawing by Louis Portman after Jacques Kuyper, together with 20 other fine, and exquisite, engraved plates with detailed and expert hand-colouring throughout; a wonderfully pleasing copy; externally fine; recently expertly, and invisibly, rejointed at upper board by Charles Gledhill, internally also preserved in exceptionally crisp state with occasional very light, and inoffensive, browning and spotting (almost exclusively confined to text pages) and some of the unavoidable offsetting from plates to blank guards, with a neat contemporary inscription, dated 1817, to front blank. Early, revised, edition, complete with an additional 4 plates, with extensive explanatory text in both Dutch and French. This work originally appeared in 5 instalments from 1803 to 1807, with a total of 16 plates. All images carry the imprint of Evert Maaskamp and Colnaghi & Co., apart from plate 1, which only mentions the Dutch printer. It is a historically, ethnologically, and culturally, important volume of prints of costumes of the various Batavian provinces, designed to underline their antique origin, and their "absolute Dutchness". The venture was also, in part, a propaganda exercise, designed to reinforce Dutch national identity following a period of political unrest. Similar works had appeared in France, England, Germany and Switzerland in response to the growing intellectual interest in the study of popular culture. This also stimulated artistic, and commercial, competition between nations. The beautiful and animated backgrounds which were drawn from nature, the beautifully observed and documented details of costume (which were drawn from life), and the extensive anecdotal text, provide a social, cultural, and historical context for the dress (Eveline Koolhaas-Grosfeld. "Une nouvelle image des Pays-Bas: l'identité nationale par l'estampe").

        Conchology or the Natural History of Shells.

      London, William Miller. (1811). - Tall folio (10.5 x 16.5 ins, 270 x 420mm) FINELY BOUND IN CONTEMPORARY DARK GREEN MOROCCO, TOOLED IN BLIND AND GILT, RAISED BANDS, ALL EDGES GILT, stitching partly split at one gathering . Complete with 60 superb hand-coloured aquatint plates. Occasional very light offset onto the text but the plates themselves FREE FROM THE USUAL OFFSET FROM THE TEXT. In my experience, the colouring can vary considerably from copy to copy, even becoming a uniform sludgy brown. The colouring here, and the images themselves, are exceptionally crisp, bright and varied. All in all a Superb Example. At the time of publication Perry was castigated for the fanciful nature of the shells he illustrated, being accused of inventing both the forms and colours of his specimens. However time has proved him to be correct and his detractors merely jealous cynics. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      Havana: Don Esteban Joseph Boloña, 1811. [6],28pp. Quarto. Half modern polished calf and linen-covered boards, spine gilt. Minor instances of light foxing at edges of first and last printed leaves. Lower corner of rear fly leaf torn. A very good copy. An extremely rare early 19th-century Havana imprint defending the monarchy and Spanish sovereignty on the Peninsula and in the New World against Napoleon and the negative influences of other contemporary philosophies. Issued during the Peninsular War, Figuera de Vargas' pamphlet was intended to promote the continued union of the Spanish realm in both hemispheres and to serve as a warning against the "seductive" elements of the French invasion and other pernicious influences. Due to a combination of climate and often poor paper quality, colonial-era Cuban imprints are rare. Not recorded in OCLC or Palau.

Original text blocks clean and lovely and free of foxing; modern bindings likewise tasteful and handsome, although head of spine of Volume II bears an unfortunate 3/4" gash at the head of the spine (archivally mended, but visible) and a couple of other small discreet punctures; circular blind-embossed ownership stamp impressed on inner front flyleaf of each volume. Despite these minor issues, this is a superb and quite handsome set of this important edition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Sense and Sensibility: A Novel in Three Volumes By a Lady.

      London T. Egerton 1811 - First edition, 3 volumes, 12mo., complete with all half-titles, with blanks N8 in volume 2 and blank O8 in volume 3, some light spotting, more so to a few gatherings, bound to style in modern calf-backed blue boards, vellum tips, handsomely presented in a fine morocco-backed solander box, a very good set. A rare opportunity to obtain a copy with all the half-titles. Most examples which come to market nowadays are defective on this account. This copy with additional interest as each volume bears the signature of a contemporary female reader. The print run of Sense is unknown, however, it was certainly small: "Probably it consisted of only 1000 copies or even less, and this would account for the fact that Sense and Sensibility is so much the rarest of the novels at the present day." (Keynes). It is now commonly accepted that only 750 copies were printed. Originally a sketch written in 1795 in the form of letters and titled Elinor and Marianne (representing "sense" and "sensibility"), the novel was revised in 1797 and 1798 at Steventon and again in 1809 and 1810, the first year of Jane Austen's residence at Chawton. Thomas Egerton undertook publication on a commission basis, and Jane Austen "'actually made a reserve from her very moderate income to meet the expected loss". The price of the new novel was 15 shillings in boards, and advertisements first appeared for it on 30 October 1811. When it sold out in less than two years, Jane wrote delightedly to her brother Francis (3 July 1813): "You will be glad to hear that every copy of Sense and Sensibility is sold and that it has brought me £140 beside the copyright, if that should ever be of any value."         [Paper Doll Book]: Ellen, or The Naughty Girl Reclaimed, A Story, Exemplified in a Series of Figures

      London: Printed for S. and J. Fuller, at the Temple of Fancy, Rathbone Place. 1811. Third edition, in a printed slipcase dated 1824. Stitched gray printed paperwrappers. With all nine cut-out costumed handcolored figures, the moveable head, and three hats (of five) laid in. Text in verse. Advertisements for other publications on rear wrap and slipcase. Corner of page 5 missing with no loss of text. Inscribed from an aunt to a niece on blank front endpaper. Slipcase neatly repaired along two sides with old hand-stitching; the moveable head shows some wear at the neck; the cut-outs are fresh and brightly colored. Very good. The story of an ill-tempered child who falls in with gypsies, but finally returns to her family.According to Andrew White Tuer in his book Pages and Pictures from Forgotten Children Books (London: 1898-9), this book was a favorite of Queen Victoria when she was a child. It "formed one of a series of a dozen or more under different titles. The prettily tinted cut-out illustrations were on cardboard, separate from the text. A moveable head, which, through much handling soon shewed signs of wear, fitted into a groove behind the neck, and completed one of the pictures at a time. These little book-toys, which ran into many editions and were copied by German and French publishers..." Although incomplete, much nicer and more complete than usually found. .

        Broadside, begins: Sabed: que ha llegado á nuestras manos un proclama del rebelde Cura de Dolores que se titula: 'Manifiesto, que el Señor Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla::::,, [sic] haze al Pueblo.

      Mexico: no publisher/printer Folio (43.4 cm; 17.125"). [1] p.. 26 January 1811 Approximately two months prior to Father Hidalgo's capture by the Royal Forces, the Holy Office issued this decree condemning a publication of the Father of Mexican Independence as seditious, Lutheran, and anti-Catholic. Other writings circulating in manuscript are also condemned: One beginning, "Hemos llegado a la epoca" and ending, "De una Patriota de Lagos" and another beginning, "Es posible. Americanos!" and ending, "será gratificado con quinientos pesos." Copies of each were burned by the public executioner and all citizens are warned of the penalties — excommunication and fines — for owning or reading these writings, or failing to denounce those who do. Printed on two sheets precisely glued together to form a seamless whole, in double-column format and with the woodcut seal of the Inquisition in the lower right corner of the lower edge. Garritz located only the copy in the Biblioteca Nacional and WorldCat locates only seven U.S. institutions holding copies. Old folds; a few small wormholes touching or costing a very few letters and one larger hole costing five letters, but not impeding reading sense. Slight discoloration along the area where the two sheets are pasted together and at points on vertical fold.

        Autograph sketchleaf to op. 117, "König Stephan" ("Ungarns erster Wohltäter").

      [Teplitz, 1811]. - 2 pages in ink and pencil on 16-stave paper (322 x 234 mm), with two folds. Formerly sewn on the left margin, leaving three punched holes. Accompanied by two autograph letters signed from Friedrich Wilhelm Künzel in Leipzig to Fred M. Steele of Chicago, dated July 16th, 1886, discussing the acquisition and certifying the authenticity of the present leaf. A densely-used two-sided autograph sketchleaf containing music to opus 117, "König Stephan" or "Ungarns erster Wohltäter" ("Hungary's first Benefactor"), the front showing, among other motifs, the opening cello/bassoon line for the beginning of the first movement chorus, "Ruhend von seinen Thaten" (Andante maestoso e con moto, C major), and the verso with material from the end of the movement, all over with various freely written passages in ink and pencil, mostly on single staves, some with text underneath, containing many holograph corrections and instances where ink is written over pencil. - The present sketchleaf, apparently hitherto unknown to scholarship, belongs to a book of sketches that Beethoven used while writing his stage music "König Stephan" in 1811. Beethoven created his own book from various paper on hand and used it while at the spa in Teplitz from late 1810 into mid 1811. He finished "König Stephan" between 20 August and mid-September 1811. The sketches are of the first chorus (after the overture). The musical play was commissioned for the opening of the new theatre in Pest along with "The Ruins of Athens". First performed on 9 February 1812, it was published as op. 117. King Stephen I founded Hungary in 1000. Emperor Francis I of Austria commissioned the new theatre, and Beethoven was chosed as the composer to honour the occasion of the opening. The Austrian Emperor was honouring Hungary's loyalty, thus the subject matter on a text by August von Kotzebue. - The Beethoven-Haus in Bonn holds four other sketches from this sketchbook (viewable in their digital online archive, as entries HCB Bsk 2/50, 3/51, 4/52, and Mh 81), all of which share the same three holes punched on the left-side margin of the present sketch. We would like to thank Dr. Carmelo Comberiati, professor of Music History at Manhattanville College, for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. - Provenance: Friedrich Wilhelm Künzel, Leipzig, before 1886; Collection of Fred M. Steele, Chicago, purchased from the above, 1886. Offered in the "Collection of Important Autographs in the estate of Mrs. Ella P. Steele, widow of Mr. Fred M. Steele" (Philadelphia, 1918). Acquired from the purchaser's descendants, last located in Greenwich, CT. For an in-depth discussion of the pages this sketch belongs to, see Douglas Johnson, Alan Tyson and Robert Winter, "The Beethoven Sketchbooks", p. 201-206. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
